Hello! And welcome to the Dana Gould Hour Podcast's annual Halloween spectacular. Or spooktacular! Ha ha! Get it? Not spectacular but – okay, you get it. What a show we have for you today. Mike McCarty and James Knight are brothers, even if they don't have the same last name. And they are the hosts of a new horror podcast called The Head, the Tail and the Whole Damn Thing. It's not your ordinary horror podcast as you will soon learn. I have known Mike forever. He is a special effects make-up artist who has worked on Blade Runner 2049, Mind Hunter, The Exorcist, The Orville, Stan Against Evil, if anyone remembers that show. James is an actor and educator but together, they share a love of all things creepy, and, most importantly, they are great guys and they're super funny. Mike McCarty and James Knight. Also, Rob Zabrecky, or just Zabrecky, if you are a fan of magic, is here. Rob is an actor, and an author and a musician, a Valley kid, who has since gone on to become a professional illusionist and a walking encyclopedia if all things magic. Rob runs the Houdini seance at The Magic Castle and is here today to talk about the history of Midnight Spook Shows! He's also performing one at the Mayan Theater this month here in Los Angeles, but we have him right here, right now, Rob Zabrecky. True Tales From Weirdsville takes us on a deep dive on Dracula, from Bram Stoker's book to Hamilton Dean's west end production in the 1920's all the way up to Gary Oldman's fright wig. We'll discuss which film version is closest to the book, and why, but also ask, how much does that actually matter?
In 1993, Rob Zabrecky was certain he'd seen his future and that future was as a rockstar and frontman for local LA rockers Possum Dixon, his band that had just been signed to Interscope Records for a 3 record deal. But life is complicated. Indeed they had, by all accounts, a pretty great career as an "alternative" band with big tours and big producers like Rik Ocasek of The Cars. But like many other rock stars he fell prey to drugs and all the other issues that can derail a career. So he pivoted, as one does, to auctioneering, a fascinating career path over several years that eventually allowed him the time and resources to begin practicing a secret love; comedy, magic and sleight of hand. He's a handsome man, funny with a charismatic onscreen presence, having acted in commercials, TV and several feature length films in the post rockstar years. That charisma directly aided his new career path into a one-man show made of mentalism, magic and comedy that he has honed over the past 15 years. He now travels the world and has made quite a name for himself in this new career as Zabrecky and is deeply immersed in that distinctive niche, mingling and sharing the stage with some of the biggest acts in comedy and magic.

Abstract: Inherited mutations in contractile and structural genes, which decrease cardiomyocyte tension generation, are principal drivers of dilated cardiomyopathy (DCM)- the leading cause of heart failure1,2. Progress towards developing precision therapeutics for and defining the underlying determinants of DCM has been cardiomyocyte centric with negligible attention directed towards fibroblasts despite their role in regulating the best predictor of DCM severity, cardiac fibrosis3,4. Given that failure to reverse fibrosis is a major limitation of both standard of care and first in class precision therapeutics for DCM, this study examined whether cardiac fibroblast-mediated regulation of the hearts material properties is essential for the DCM phenotype. Here we report in a mouse model of inherited DCM that prior to the onset of fibrosis and dilated myocardial remodeling both the myocardium and extracellular matrix (ECM) stiffen from switches in titin isoform expression, enhanced collagen fiber alignment, and expansion of the cardiac fibroblast population, which we blocked by genetically suppressing p38 in cardiac fibroblasts. This fibroblast-targeted intervention unexpectedly improved the primary cardiomyocyte defect in contractile function and reversed ECM and dilated myocardial remodeling. Together these findings challenge the long-standing paradigm that ECM remodeling is a secondary complication to inherited defects in cardiomyocyte contractile function and instead demonstrate cardiac fibroblasts are essential contributors to the DCM phenotype, thus suggesting DCM-specific therapeutics will require fibroblast-specific strategies. Strange Cures is a turbulent, against-all-odds memoir of self-discovery, success, failure, and reinvention, told by one of LA’s most interesting natives. With an unflinching gaze, musician/magician/actor Rob Zabrecky recounts his bizarre coming-of-age tale and his quest to find a place in the arts—and the world. The author reveals a young life filled with both physical miracles and subversive role models, including an uncle who impersonated an FBI agent and, in a drunken delusion, shot and nearly killed him. He takes readers on a roller coaster ride through the nascent days of Silver Lake’s music and art community, as seen through the lens of his critically acclaimed band, Possum Dixon. We explore the left-of-center landscape of Jabberjaw, LA’s independent coffeehouse which featured the early talents of Nirvana and Beck; Zabrecky’s own struggles with drug addiction, love, and recovery; and finally, his re-emergence as a magician venturing into the sacred world of Hollywood’s Magic Castle.
Rob Zabrecky, the former frontman of new wave punk band Possum Dixon, has written a memoir called "Strange Cures." It's about LA's rock 'n roll scene during the late 1980s and 1990s. Zabrecky chronicles his early days growing up in "boring Burbank," his fascination with seedy Hollywood and music on the Sunset strip, and his own Hollywood story.
Alexi talks to magician, musician, actor, and author: Rob Zabrecky! Former frontman of the band Possum Dixon, an iconic figure on the LA scene, and overall master entertainer; Rob's just come out with his memoir "Strange Cures" available on amazon. Rob and Alexi talk magic, growing up in LA - being neither rich nor privileged, warts, being shot by his FBI impersonating uncle, witchy remedies, the LA music scene (The JabberJaw, The Smell), The Magic Castle, writing, addiction, proposing to his wife, acting, and so much more! Watch Rob on Season 2 of CBS's Strange Angel. See him perform live at the Magic Castle (if you can figure out how to get IN to the exclusive, members only, legendary club!). Strange Cures combines magic and music, knowledge and innocence, humor and pathos into a singular and unique narrative. His story is a weird and worthy subject. As is he." - Jason Alexander, actor, comedian, director "Zabrecky’s memoirs are surprising, addictive, terrifying, magical. He careens through childhood, rock and roll, and popular entertainment by driving on the shoulder, passing on the right, and then playing bumper cars with the cold, hard truth. You’re in for a fantastic ride." - Jim Steinmeyer, President of the Magic Castle, author, inventor "There are some voices, some lives, some stories that so uniquely and powerfully make up the blood of Los Angeles' pulsing, and Rob Zabrecky's Strange Cures is without a doubt one of them. A breathtaking journey through music, addiction, revival and literal and metaphorical magic by one of LA's most cherished and significant pillars makes Zabrecky's trajectory a read you won't soon forget." -Amber Tamblyn, Actress, Author, Poet --------------------------------------------------------------------- Today's episode of the Love, Alexi podcast is brought to you by Sanae Intoxicants located in the Elements of Gray Building in Los Feliz California. His first underground prominence was as primary songwriter, bassist and frontman of fabled '90s rock ensemble Possum Dixon. While supporting himself as a professional auctioneer, Zabrecky embarked upon his next circle of specialized fame as a sleight-of-hand entertainer, a career that included a stint with magic cabaret act The Unholy Three. Rob's subsequent work as an unsettling character actor in commercials, films and network TV can be searched out and discussed and dissected and delighted over with a tight circle of discerning friends who have heightened appreciations of obscure talents. He lives with his wife, Tommi, and is completing a memoir that will populate the bookshelves of knowing readers throughout the land.
He is strange. And then wonderful. Puzzling. Empathetic. Engaging. Talented. And, get ready for, all of these in quick succession: mysterious, hilarious, and always unexpected. He is a three-time Magician of the Year award winner at the Magic Castle in Hollywood. There’s probably more “theatre” in the wonderfully strange Zabrecky magic act than in most Broadway shows—more surprises, musicality, and character.
