Educated at prestigious institutions, she has dedicated her career to identifying and addressing the complex and often overlooked presentations of ADHD, particularly in women and girls. Dr. Littman discusses her journey into the field, starting from her internships in New York, where she first noticed the underrepresentation of girls in ADHD diagnoses. Despite early dismissal of her theories, Dr. Littman, through persistence and collaboration with other pioneers like Patricia Quinn and Kathleen Nadeau, brought significant attention to gender differences in ADHD, leading to her co-authoring a groundbreaking book on the subject. The podcast explores misconceptions about ADHD, particularly in women, the challenges they face, including misdiagnosis, the impact of estrogen on symptoms, and the pervasive issue of shame. We all can benefit from a deeper understanding of ADHD and how it impacts perinatal mental health. Join us to learn more! Jacqueline Cohen is a Licensed Professional Counselor, ADHD-Certified Clinical Specialist Provider, Certified Clinical Hypnotherapist, coach, consultant, writer, and speaker. She has been in private practice for over 15 years, specializing in perinatal mental health and adult ADHD. She experienced postpartum depression and anxiety after the birth of her son in 2001 and was diagnosed with ADHD ten years later as her son was also diagnosed. In this episode, we discuss what ADHD is, what it looks like, and how it might be experienced in the perinatal period. I'm excited to explore this topic with Jacqueline! The uses and abuses of ChatGBT artificial intelligence language model have taken the collective imagination by storm. Apocalyptic predictions of the singularity, when technology becomes uncontrollable and irreversible, frighten us as we imagine a future where human intelligence is irrelevant. Prof. Michael Littman joins us to contextualize the advancement of artificial intelligence and debunk the paranoid rhetoric littering the public discourse. Michael has made groundbreaking research contributions enabling machines to learn from their experiences, assess the environment, make decisions, and improve their actions over time in real-world applications. His later work expanded into multi-agent systems, investigating how several AI entities can learn to cooperate, compete, or coexist in shared environments. Picture a team of robots in a factory, each with different tasks. The challenge here isn't just for each robot to do its job effectively but also to collaborate with the others, avoid collisions, and adapt to changes in real time. Emerging concepts of 'intelligence' in artificial intelligence aren't about building machines that can perform tasks faster and more accurately than humans; it is about building machines that can think, learn, and adapt - machines that aren't just tools but collaborative partners. If we examine our resistance to this emerging technology, we might catch glimpses of our unconscious fear of regression and dependency. Observation suggests most people fall into one of two groups, those who idealize a world where they are free of demands and another where they are enslaved by superiors. When we realize the fear or fantasy of regression is not the likely outcome of artificial intelligence, we are free to imagine the innumerable creative applications of the new technology and the machines that use it. MICHAEL L. LITTMAN, PhD Michael L. Littman is University Professor of Computer Science at Brown University, where he studies machine learning and decision-making under uncertainty. He has earned multiple university-level awards for teaching and his research has been recognized with three best-paper awards and three influential paper awards. The Founding Fathers, if they could have foreseen the terror of today, would surely have revised the Second Amendment. But here we are. This is a free preview of a paid episode. To hear more, visit public.substack.comIn March, Public published my essay, “Why Are We Sterilizing Children?” It argued that the sudden explosion of adolescent girls identifying as transgender in recent years is a “social contagion,” much like anorexia before it. Scientific support for that hypothesis comes from a 2018 study by Brown University's Lisa Littman. She found that girls suffering from gender dysphoria, or confusion about whether they were male or female, tended to have one or more peers who identified as transgender, and suffered from preexisting mental health issues. The study was hugely controversial. Trans activists attacked Littman and demanded the paper be retracted. Under pressure from the journal, Littman revised her paper, but it was little matter: Brown University, under intense pressure, severed its relationship with Littman. But in March of this year, new scientific support for Littman's hypothesis emerged in the form of a new study published by the Archives of Sexual Behaviour: “Rapid Onset Gender Dysphoria: Parent Reports on 1655 Possible Cases,” by Dr. Michael Bailey and Suzanna Diaz.

The future of health matters to every one of us. From biotech to the latest innovations, we are all impacted by the rapid transformations that are happening in healthcare.   Neil is the Founder & CEO of Bioverge Ventures, an investment platform democratizing access to enable individuals to diversify their portfolio with private biotech and healthcare investments for the purposes of long-term wealth creation.   Between surviving a plane crash and watching helplessly as his grandmother battled cancer, Neil realized that biotechnology was the perfect way to create more tools for more doctors to help more patients. He highlights his experience with an almost sci-fi-like cure for a genetic disease with the use of novel biotechnologies and recognizes that the future of biotech is happening today.    But what does this mean for investors? The pandemic proved that when biotech needs to move fast it is entirely capable of doing so. Neil points out that the loss ratios in biotech aren't as high as it is for software companies, making it an appealing choice for investors.   Bioverge aims to understand the science behind technologies to highlight key risks and milestones for potential investors. By investing at the seed stage, they bear the greatest risk as well as the potential for the greatest reward.   From growing human organs to creating 3D models of working lungs and growing stem cells, the future of biotech in the healthcare industry — and the benefit of investing in it — is happening today.   Interview Links: Bioverge Ventures   Resources: 20,000 Scaleups Scaling Up Summits (Select Bill Gallagher as your coach during registration for a discount.) These 2 tasks are at odds with each other because establishing a therapeutic relationship entails honesty and a sense of safety that can be compromised if young people believe that what they need and deserve (potentially blockers, hormones, or surgery) can be denied them according to the information they provide to the therapist.” This excerpt strongly suggests she doesn't believe in the traditional gatekeeping role a mental-health clinician might play in a situation like this, helping to determine if a young person will benefit from transitioning.https://jamanetwork.com/journals/jamapediatrics/article-abstract/2504256Kids — sorry, sorry — “adolescents” — getting double mastectomies at 13 or 14https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/29507933/“Suicide Attempts among Transgender and Gender Non-Conforming Adults: Findings of the Naitonal Transgender Discrimination Survey.”https://williamsinstitute.law.ucla.edu/wp-content/uploads/Trans-GNC-Suicide-Attempts-Jan-2014.pdfn.b.: “Without such probes, we were unable to determine the extent to which the 41 percent of NTDS participants who reported ever attempting suicide may overestimate the actual prevalence of attempts in the sample.” And:Finally, it should be emphasized that the NTDS, like all similar surveys, captured information about suicide attempts, not completed suicide. Lacking any information about completed suicide among transgender people (due primarily to decedents not being identified by gender identity or transgender status), it may be tempting to consider suicide attempt data to be the best available proxy measure of suicide death. Data from the U.S. population at large, however, show clear demographic differences between suicide attempters and those who die by suicide. While almost 80 percent of all suicide deaths occur among males, about 75 percent of suicide attempts are made by females. Adolescents, who overall have a relatively low suicide rate of about 7 per 100,000 people, account for a substantial proportion of suicide attempts, making perhaps 100 or more attempts for every suicide death. 13 suicides per 100,000 in a GIDS samplehttps://link.springer.com/article/10.1007/s10508-022-02287-7Insanely high rate of 2.8% in a Belgian clinical samplehttps://biblio.ugent.be/publication/8706800/file/8707586.pdfT H E G U I D E L I N E SStewart: So these, the guidelines that you wrote, because you were responsible with the endocrine board for writing guidelines of care for endocrinology.Safer: The Endocrine Society, yesStewart: The endocrine society.Yes.Stewart: And that was based on, uh, research papers, data, the things that you saw. None described anything like the months-long assessments de Vries and her colleagues adopted in their research. At most of the clinics, a team of professionals – typically a social worker, a psychologist and a doctor specializing in adolescent medicine or endocrinology – initially meets with the parents and child for two hours or more to get to know the family, their medical history and their goals for treatment. At 21, a surgeon replaced her deteriorated jaw joint. She's been diagnosed with degenerative disc disease and fibromyalgia, a chronic pain condition. Her teeth are shedding enamel and cracking. None of it made sense to her until she discovered a community of women online who describe similar symptoms and have one thing in common: All had taken a drug called Lupron. Thousands of parents chose to inject their daughters with the drug, which was approved to shut down puberty in young girls but also is commonly used off-label to help short kids grow taller. The drug's pediatric version comes with few warnings about long-term side effects. It is also used in adults to fight prostate cancer or relieve uterine pain and the Food and Drug Administration has warnings on the drug's adult labels about a variety of side effects. More than 10,000 adverse event reports filed with the FDA reflect the experiences of women who've taken Lupron. The reports describe everything from brittle bones to faulty joints. In interviews and in online forums, women who took the drug as young girls or initiated a daughter's treatment described harsh side effects that have been well-documented in adults.Caroline Jemsbyhttps://www.journalismfund.eu/journalists/carolina-jemsbyGULDSPADENhttps://archive.ph/wip/GFuryClip in questionhttps://drive.google.com/file/d/1bL4WWMCs46dCKweZzz0gBj1AqE62k3oj/view?usp=sharingFull unlocked interview with JesseGLAAD is glad journalists are falling in linehttps://www.glaad.org/blog/jon-stewart-sets-record-straight-gender-affirming-carehttps://www.glaad.org/blog/john-oliver-explains-why-gender-affirming-care-is-so-importantBut sometimes nothttps://www.glaad.org/gap/jesse-singalJesse's response to the original version of his page (he hasn't yet responded to the new one, which went up after this, because life is short): The TikTok Doc yeets some teetshttps://www.nytimes.com/2022/09/26/health/top-surgery-transgender-teenagers.htmlWhoops:Dr. Gallagher of Miami said that she follows up with patients for up to a year. “I can say this honestly: I don't know of a single case of regret,” Dr. Gallagher said in May, adding that regret was much more common with cosmetic procedures. But one of her former top surgery patients, Grace Lidinsky-Smith, has been vocal about her detransition on social media and in news reports. “I slowly came to terms with the fact that it had been a mistake born out of a mental health crisis,” Ms. Lidinsky-Smith, 28, said in an interview. So basically, these clinicians are claiming top surgery has incredibly low regret rates, but they're simply not bothering to keep in touch with their patients. And one year is not very long for followup on this — if you give a kid top surgery at 15 or 16, one of the questions is whether, as their peers sexually develop and start families, they'll at some point wish they had breasts. It's a totally natural, important question, and you can't answer it if your patients are disappearing into the void just one year after you perform surgery on them.Age guidelineshttps://www.cdc.gov/hiv/policies/law/states/minors.htmlOliver: So the benefits of providing care are immense and the risks of withholding it are dire. A survey of around 28,000 trans people found that of those who wanted hormone therapy and didn't receive it 58% reported suicidal thoughts in a given year, which is why the three major professional associations of Child and Adolescent doctors, psychologists and psychiatrists have endorsed gender affirming care and condemned efforts to deny it. https://journals.plos.org/plosone/article?id=10.1371/journal.pone.0261039This study is ridiculous and doesn't even show any correlation between access to hormones and improvement on the more serious suicide measures anywayOliver: You may have seen or heard from a small subset of people who D transitioned but it is worth noting such cases are rare and highly individualized. Studies show an average of just 2% of people who transition expressed regret. Healthcare and medicine have long served as a hotbed of innovation. Perhaps the leading edge these days requires a paradigm shift – think digital therapeutics, Web3, the metaverse, CRISPR, Software as a Medical Device – this is the domain of Neil Littman, Founder & CEO of Bioverge, a highly curated impact-investment venture platform exclusively dedicated to healthcare and to democratizing access to investing in early stage companies and startups. The Bioverge platform serves as a decentralized network linking capital to potential investment opportunities. Neil also hosts, The Bioverge Podcast. Neil talked about his time at the California Institute for Regenerative Medicine and what it was like from both the scientific and business aspects. It was there that he learned that the institutional model of financing and investing could be applied to the retail sector as well. Combining those experiences and what he learned firsthand, lead to his creating the Bioverge platform. Neil discussed that the decentralized network he built provides warm referrals to Bioverge with the goal of linking capital for potential investment opportunities. But they also provide value added services beyond just capital that helps founders and portfolio companies that may need support and expertise along the way. Beyond sourcing deal flow, they conduct due diligence on the investment opportunities by leveraging their network of subject matter experts who also have deep domain expertise. Neil's work is such a great example of “doing well while doing good” by helping to save lives and change the world.

In this second episode on detransition (following from EP 74), Sasha and Stella dig into several pieces of research on detransition experiences. They discuss surveys and case studies and analyze the data which is forming a picture of why detransition happens and what appropriate therapeutic care might look like for this vulnerable group. Themes emerge such as misattributing distress to the body's sex, unprocessed grief and trauma, medical complications, and dissatisfaction with medical transition. There is no clear understanding of how many people change their minds about transitioning. Gender dysphoria is different than sex dysphoria. Some are disappointed because they say the physical reality of transitioning wasn't very satisfying. We are all vain. We all care about how we look. There are medical complications with transition surgery. Does a relationship to sexual orientation keep someone in a trans-identity longer? Autistic people might be more likely to remain transitioned. In one study, 70% of respondents said they realized their gender dysphoria was related to other issues. Is human suffering, in all of its bizarre variations, something we must eradicate as soon as we have the means? Sasha says no. The number of people in de-trans Reddit is over 34,000 as of this recording. Pablo Expósito Campos started the conversation with core de-trans and non-core de-trans. There is a de-transition of the mind (letting go of gender identity theory) and the de-transition of the body. The idea that gender transition encompasses all of a person's issues has to change. Not all medical transitions result in the “promised land” for transitioners. Sasha believes the possibility exists to get everyone on board about finding the root cause

Few people have managed to document the modern history of technology as Jonathan Littman has. Jonathan is a prominent author and journalist known for the bestselling book The Art of Innovation that he collaborated on with IDEO co-founder David Kelley and his brother Tom Kelley. In this episode of Before IT Happened, we talk about Jonathan's most recent book, The Entrepreneur's Faces, the different categories of entrepreneur personalities and his experience inside the fast-growing tech hub of Lisbon, Portugal. Listen now and try to guess which entrepreneur archetype matches your personality! Before any world-changing innovation, there was a moment, an event, a realization that sparked the idea before it happened. This is a podcast about that moment — about that idea. Before IT Happened takes you on a journey with the innovators who imagined — and are still imagining — our future. Join host Donna Loughlin as her guests tell their stories of how they brought their visions to life.  JUMP STRAIGHT INTO: (01:18) - Jonathan Littman's successful career as an author and journalist - “I had a fantastic job and then suddenly saw an opportunity for my first real startup, which was a book.” (08:04) - Documenting the origin of innovation: Working with brothers Tom and David Kelly inside IDEO - “The success of Apple and Samsung are hugely dependent on this relationship. Samsung had like 20 designers live at IDEO, and that's really the reason they jumped ahead.” (14:06) - Beyond the visionary: Defining the different categories of entrepreneurs outlined in The Entrepreneur's Faces - “There are all these blanket statements: ‘It's all about the team'. But then you actually never hear the archetypes of the team… You don't really want to have four visionaries.” (21:01) - On influential leaders and companies' archetypes - “With Bezos, it was all about performance. It was all about making revenue and changing fast. He had no interest really in design, beauty or elegance.” (22:58) - The new California Dream is in Portugal: Do these archetypes have cultural or physical barriers? - “We can sell nothing right here in San Francisco, we can sell a promise… And most people from the rest of the world really struggle with that.” (27:01) - Unraveling the different phases within innovation - “The most important thing you can do as a mentor or an advisor is to help people make a shift.” (31:10) - Tough times and opportunities - “When the rules change, when habits change, when behaviors change, it's the ideal time to start.” EPISODE RESOURCES:  Connect with Jonathan on https://twitter.com/jonlittman (Twitter) and https://www.linkedin.com/in/jonathan-littman-0619325/ (LinkedIn) Read Jonathan's most recent book: https://www.theentrepreneursfaces.com/ (The Entrepreneur's Faces) Read Jonathan's LA Magazine story: https://www.lamag.com/culturefiles/the-new-california-dream-is-in-portugal/ (The New California Dream Is in Portugal ) Learn more about innovation hub https://smartup.life/ (Smartup.life) and Jonathan's http://snowballnarrative.com/ (Snowball Narrative) Watch: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TtK-XedI7hg (Jonathan Littman & Susanna Camp The Entrepreneur's Faces: How Makers Visionaries & Outsiders Succeed) Thank you for listening! Dr Lisa Littman, coined the term "Rapid Onset Gender Dysphoria" in her groundbreaking 2018 study of the phenomenon, based on parents' observations. Many trans activists and activist organizations have dismissed the concept altogether. Her most recent research focusses on transition regret (detransition). Her paper was published in October 2021. In this episode of Transparency, Aaron reflects on how Dr Littman's research fits within his own trans experiences and observations.   ROGD Study: https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/30114286/ Comment about methodology: https://www.researchgate.net/publication/338665616_The_Use_of_Methodologies_in_Littman_2018_Is_Consistent_with_the_Use_of_Methodologies_in_Other_Studies_Contributing_to_the_Field_of_Gender_Dysphoria_Research_Response_to_Restar_2019 Detrans Study: https://link.springer.com/content/pdf/10.1007/s10508-021-02163-w.pdf ============ Support our work: https://www.paypal.com/donate/?hosted_button_id=CT24DGMWKGXBU www.genderdysphoriaalliance.com
