Sheryl Kurland, and her 93-year-young mother Bette Anne Leider, are celebrating International Women's Day, March 8th, with Lipstick! 8 years ago, Sheryl founded the non-profit 'Find Your Fabulosity' and has helped boost the morale of more than 108,000 domestic violence victims across the US. $2 million worth of lipsticks have made their way to women who are working to rebuild their lives. And it's been amazing to Sheryl to see what a difference this can and does make. It did begin decades ago with her mother, Bette Anne, who said to her: "Sheryl, if you want to feel better, just go put on a little lipstick." At 93, Bette Anne is still encouraging others - including the women in her retirement community - to add their touch of lipstick. Thrive Causemetics, a makeup company, introduced new Impact-FULL lipsticks in 2023 naming a berry brown shade 'Sheryl' in Sheryl Kurland's honor. Donations can be made online to this special non-profit. www.findyourfabulosity.org  Learn more about your ad choices. Visit podcastchoices.com/adchoices

SEASON 2 - EPISODE 130 - Peter Kurland - Production Sound Mixer Production sound mixer Peter Kurland (THE BALLAD OF BUSTER SCRUGGS, NO COUNTRY FOR OLD MEN, WALK THE LINE) joins us in this episode of the Team Deakins Podcast. We've worked with Peter many times over the years, and we had a wonderful time catching up with him. In the beginning of the episode, Peter shares the two versions of his origin story, both of which begin in Nashville, and we learn how he was repeatedly enlisted in roles in the sound department without any training. A former boom op, Peter also fills us in on the subtle differences between boom mics and radio mics, and we learn how Peter communicates potential sound problems to a director and to production at large. Peter also shares how he best fulfills requests from post-production, and we discuss how we try to capture what the director wants, even when they don't want to think about it. And, at the end, Peter shares his thoughts on recent changes in the film industry. - This episode is sponsored by Aputure

Bob Kurland's Slide LinksIn all protein functions, parts of the proteins bind loosely to other parts of the protein and thus form appropriate structures that are essential to their function. This is shown very nicely in this TED YouTube video, by Professor Ken Dill https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zm-3kovWpNQ Here is another nice YouTube video showing protein flexibility https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yZ2aY5lxEGE Webinar TitleThe Anthropic Principle: “Are We Special?”--Did God make our “Goldilocks Universe” for man?Abstract The universe in which we live and came to be is not ordinary, but unusual. As the Church Lady in Saturday Night Live of old would say, “Now, isn't that special!” Or is it? Some scientists would agree with Roger Penrose – that if it weren't special, we wouldn't be here to remark on it. Many other scientists and philosophers would agree with Thomas Nagel that an explanation giving only the result is not an explanation. (And, of course, if it is special, then there is the implicit conclusion that this is so because of a Creating Intelligence, which we Catholics recognize as the Trinitarian God.) In my presentation I will discuss some of the so-called “anthropic coincidences” necessary for carbon-based life. Although some examples from cosmology and particle physics will be included, I'm going to focus on the wonderful parts of chemistry and molecular biology, processes that point to the hand of a Creating Intelligence. And of course the prophets of the Old Testament and saints of the early Church knew this all along, without the benefit of science. Dr. Robert Kurland, a convert to Catholicism in 1995, is a retired physicist who has applied magnetic resonance to problems of biological interest in his research (web search: “Kurland-McGarvey Equation”). Dr. Kurland is a graduate of Caltech (BS, 1951, “with honor”) and Harvard (PhD, 1956). His scientific career at Carnegie-Mellon, SUNY/AB, Cleveland Clinic, Geisinger Medical Center, has focused on biological applications of magnetic resonance, including MRI. Since his conversion to Catholicism, he has tried to spread the message that there's no war between Catholic teaching and science.Respondent: William M. Briggs, PhD Against the Anthropic Principle Dr. William M. Briggs, the Statistician to the Stars, has a background in statistics, philosophy, meteorology, and cryptography. Born in Detroit, he left the city when it was at its peak, which some might jokingly suggest led to its decline. Briggs holds a PhD in Mathematical Sciences and an MS in Atmospheric Physics, and has served in various roles including professor, consultant, and statistician. He is known for his work in probability and statistics, as well as his cultural commentary on various social and scientific issues.

One of the most significant sources of suffering comes from our human tendency to avoid difficult emotions. We are not taught how to face these unpleasant, often daily inner experiences (mind-body energies) and so we tend to push them away, ignore them, or become unwittingly overwhelmed by them. Yet how we meet and greet these difficult emotions has everything to do with our well-being, resilience, and ability to connect with ourselves and others.Instinctually, we fight against our uncomfortable emotions; in doing so, we reinforce messages of “not good enough” or “something is wrong with me that I am feeling this way.” In You Don't Have to Change to Change Everything (Health Communications, 2024), readers learn that instead of forcing themselves to feel “happy” and pushing away what is unpleasant, or instead of getting hooked by intense emotions, another path can lead to more profound well-being. Rather than trying to change one's inner experiences, this book offers six ways to shift one's vantage point when difficult emotions arise. Being aware from each of these six vantage points allows readers to cultivate inner stability, willingness to turn toward rather than away from themselves, greater perspective, internal strengths and inner resources, self-compassion, connection with the “Whole Self” versus identification with “hole self,” and interconnection with the world around them. Beth Kurland   Dr. Beth Kurland is a clinical psychologist, TEDx and public speaker, mind-body coach and author of four books. Her newest book, You Don't Have to Change to Change Everything: Six Ways to Shift Your Vantage Point, Stop Striving for Happy, and Find True Well-Being, helps readers to discover a deep “well” of well-being within and realize they don't need to fix or change themselves to awaken the power of inner transformation. Beth is also the author of three award winning books. Her book Dancing on the Tightrope: Transcending the Habits of Your Mind and Awakening to Your Fullest Life identifies five obstacles that get in the way of our well-being, and offers five tools to transform those obstacles into lasting inner resources for peace, resilience and joy. Her book The Transformative Power of Ten Minutes: An Eight Week Guide to Reducing Stress and Cultivating Well-Being offers readers practical tools for implementing short, daily practices within the course of their day to bring about lasting change. Her book Gifts of the Rain Puddle: Poems, Meditations and Reflections for the Mindful Soul invites readers to awaken to what is most important in their lives through poems, meditations, and questions for reflection. Beth is a regular blog writer for Psychology Today and is a meditation teacher on the app Insight Timer. Inspired by her personal experiences and her work with her clients, Beth is passionate about teaching mindfulness informed practices, mind-body strategies, and practical tools to help people cultivate whole person health and well-being. Musik: Fairytale Female Vocal av Psystein, Storyblock AudioBild: Stora Rickebyhällen ligger i Boglösa socken i Trögds härad i Fjädrundaland, Enköpings kommun, Uppsala län, Uppland, Sverige.
