Dr. Brooke Scheller is a Doctor of Clinical Nutrition, Certified Nutrition Specialist, and expert in nutrition for alcohol use by impacting gut and brain health. In this episode, she talks about how alcohol impacts the gut, our nutrition habits, and even the brain. Alcohol consumption is such an individualized topic and is different for everybody. However, it's fundamental to be conscious of the impacts alcohol use – for short or long periods – can cause on the body. Every organism is unique but alcohol has the power of influencing all of the other systems in the body. Sometimes alcohol needs to be eliminated for the good of all the other body functions, but most people don't know this. Vitamin and nutrient deficiency is also a victim of consuming too much alcohol, which in parallel can cause mental health issues such as anxiety and depression. Dr. Brooke also explains the connection between alcohol consumption and gut health. In your case, what triggers the act of drinking alcohol? It's important to be aware of all the moments – parties, dinners at the end of the week, moments of stress and anxiety – that might trigger the drinking. In addition, Dr. Brooke explains that nutrition habits can help with decreasing alcohol consumption. Tune in! Key Highlights How do we change the relationship with alcohol? It's important to be aware of all the moments throughout the week that triggers alcohol intake; With age, our body responds differently to alcohol. As young adults, we can get away with drinking for long hours on a Saturday night, but as we age this shifts; Alcohol is deeply connected with food intake: sometimes bad nutrition can cause an increase in drinking habits; Sometimes alcohol needs to be eliminated for the good of all the other body functions. It impacts blood sugar and gut health; Brooke explains that gut health plays a role in all systems of the body; Drinking can cause vitamins and nutrients deficiencies; Brooke shares some good practices when it comes to nutrition, highlighting that intermittent fasting is a tool but listening to the body is crucial. Kim Ross is a Certified Nutrition Specialist, Certified Dietitian Nutritionist (NY), Licensed Dietitian Nutritionist (FL) and Institute for Functional Medicine Certified Practitioner. In this interview, she highlights numerous ways in which women can improve their health naturally. Listen in to learn about: What nutrients do hormones need? How can a nutritionist help with hormone imbalance? Nutrition vs Dieting: What is the Difference? How to make incremental shifts in your eating and lifestyle to decrease toxins and increase health What are the symptoms of malnutrition? “To simplify it, women have a natural rhythm. We function on a moon cycle (a menstrual cycle) in addition to our circadian rhythm, which repeats approximately every 24 hours. When we sleep, eat and move our bodies actually does matter. We have a lot of ups and downs with our hormones throughout the month. What you eat changes that affect. What time you eat and how you eat changes that. If you eat in a good mood or bad mood, that affects things. Our organs detoxify at different times. Our cortisol hormones, in addition to other hormones, increase and decrease at certain times. Our body temperature increases and decreases at certain times. We need to listen to the female intuition as to how our bodies are functioning. I think that people could listen better to what their body needs. If you're craving something like sugar, maybe you need vitamin C or water. Listening to what you're craving tells you what nutrients your body might need. Also, respecting and paying attention to the hormonal cycle, which affects the decisions we make every day.” - Kim Ross Check out the Nutrition and Exercise Spotify Playlist and curated resources in the Fempower Health store. Today on the Gut Health Reset Podcast, we are discussing how alcohol affects your gut health in unexpected ways with Dr. Brooke Scheller! Most people are aware that drinking alcohol can have negative consequences for their health, but many are unaware of the specific ways in which it can damage their bodies. Drinking alcohol can hurt your body's microbiome, the collection of beneficial bacteria that live in your gut. This can lead to gut permeability, or "leaky gut," which allows undigested food particles and toxins to enter the bloodstream, leading to inflammation and other issues. Finally, alcohol consumption can trigger an immune response in the gut, which can worsen autoimmune symptoms. For all these reasons, it is important to be mindful of how much alcohol you consume, and why abstaining from alcohol or limiting intake to moderate levels is essential for maintaining a healthy gut microbiome. In today's episode, we will answer these questions:- Why should you cut alcohol out of your diet?- How can wine trigger acid reflux?- What happens to the microbiome when you're consuming a lot of alcohol?- How can alcohol affect autoimmune diseases?- What steps can you take to change your relationship with alcohol?- Where can you find useful, non-alcoholic drink recipes?- And more!-Supplements: Sugar Cravings Support - https://drannmariebarter.com/product/sugar-cravings-support/ -About Dr. Brooke Scheller:Dr. Brooke Scheller is a Doctor of Clinical Nutrition, Certified Nutrition Specialist and expert in nutrition for alcohol use by impacting gut and brain health. Women's Health, Wisdom, and. . . WINE!  is a weekly conversation with practitioners, providers, patients, and healers about complex reproductive medicine and women's health challenges, the value of an integrative approach to these challenges, many of the women's health topics you're already thinking about but uncomfortable talking about, and my personal favorite. . . WINE!Weight loss has, and will continue to be, one of the most challenge exercises (no pun intended!) that one will ever have to undergo. There are so many "solutions" out there and most of them are designed to address the weight; however, they fail to address how the weight got there in the first place. From weight loss gurus to get slim quick gurus peddling their overnight weight loss success snake oil to starvation diets and surgical interventions, the weight loss industry is growing and probably will continue to do so for many years to come. In addition to the ever prevalent social determinants of health, the (stressful) conditions in which we live, learn, work, and play, eating patterns, physical activity levels, and sleep routines, genetics, and taking certain medications also play a role. It can be difficult to make healthy food choices and get enough physical activity if these conditions do not support health. Differences in social determinants of health affect chronic disease outcomes and risks, including obesity, among racial, ethnic, and socioeconomic groups as well as in different geographies and among people with different physical abilities. What would your life look like in 5 years if you continue on a downward health spiral? What would your life look like in  5 years if you had the health outcomes that matter most to you? What would become possible?About Dr. Hehmeyer:Dr. Jessie Heymeyer is the physician founder of Well Empowered where she practices data-driven, outcome-oriented Functional Medicine. When gut health issues, chronic illness, and disordered eating meet at a crossroads, how does someone take steps towards healing?    That's the subject we tackle today with Gianna Michalak, a Certified Nutrition Specialist and specifically gut health nutritionist. She works with women who have chronic illnesses to optimize their digestion and improve their quality of life.  If you're an Instagram person, Gianna puts out TONS of information that's both entertaining and informative on her Instagram and she has a new program out: The Gut Restore Program.  Normally, when you go to someone for this issue, the solutions you're offered are going to involve a pretty heavy dose of restriction – but Gianna understands that when somebody has a chronic illness, there's so much that has to do with your immune health and mental health, and sadly, very often, people struggling with this also struggle with eating disorders. So her goal is for you to expand your quality of life – which I love. What a breath of fresh air! I do want to add that if you're in the throes of your eating disorder and you struggle with chronic illness, it would be beneficial for you to work with a dietitian who specializes in eating disorders and gut health/chronic illness; some of Gianna's specific suggestions might not apply to you. Just take all of this with a grain of salt and see what works for you.  So, without further ado, let's jump right in!    Tweetable Quotes “The major myth in the gut health space is that you have to eliminate foods to restore your gut health – and that is simply not true.” – Gianna Michalak    “Let's say you are reactive to gluten right now. There may be a way that, a year from now, if you focus on optimizing your gut health and your digestion, you CAN have gluten a part of your diet and have peace and satisfaction.”-- Gianna Michalak   “[Mindfulness] actually allows your body to digest food better and it allows you to also restore your relationship with food because while you're consuming it, you're activating a brain mode of safety.” – Gianna Michalak  Resources:  Gianna's Instagram   Gianna's Newsletters and Gut Restore Guide   The Gut Restore Program LEAVE A REVIEW + help someone who may need this podcast by sharing this episode. In this episode of Mold Talks Docs, Michael Rubino sits down with Dr. Kenneth Bock to discuss his wealth of experience helping patients heal from chronic conditions and environmental exposures like mold.As a leader in integrative medicine, Dr. Bock has accumulated over 35 years of experience diagnosing the root cause of chronic illnesses and restoring balance to his patients' immune systems. He founded Bock Integrative Medicine in response to the increasing need for board-certified medical providers who take a unique "whole body" approach to diagnose and treat chronic illness. After graduating Summa Cum Laude from the State University of New York at Buffalo in 1973, he went on to earn his M.D. with Honor from the University of Rochester School of Medicine in 1979. He is board-certified in Family Medicine, a Certified Nutrition Specialist, and a Fellow of the American Academy of Family Practice, the American College of Nutrition, and the American College for Advancement in Medicine, of which he is a former President. Dr. Kenneth Bock is also a faculty member of the Institute for Functional Medicine (IFM).In this episode, they dive into:01:00: Dr. Kenneth Bock discusses how large of a role he believes environmental factors play in health and touches on his experiences helping clients with this. While there are many factors that influence how symptoms manifest in our bodies, environments play an important role. He also touches on how mold is a factor in this issue.6:00: Dr. Bock describes his experience with clients who are in the midst of a perfect storm of problems, and then one final push sends them over the edge. Mold is an example of the final stressor that sends someone into a downward spiral. 7:30: Dr. Bock goes through the importance of getting out of moldy environments. It's similar to not eating as much sugar when you're hyperglycemic. 9:20: Dr. Bock discusses the role genetics plays in environmental exposure-related symptoms and the issues he's seen from doctors only focusing on this one piece. 12:15: Dr. Bock explains what he calls the "immune kettle" and the role it plays in how a person experiences environmental exposures. "Some people do get a stacked deck in terms of genetic predispositions, and they may have to do even more to stay healthy. But the people who think they're riding free… There's no such thing as a free lunch."14:10: Dr. Bock discusses the differences between acute and chronic inflammation and the importance of distinguishing the two. He also details the various health problems inflammation can trigger, both physical and mental. People think all inflammation is bad, and it's really not that way. Acute inflammation has a purpose. However, if it's overwhelming inflammation or chronic persistent inflammation, those are the problems.19:50: Dr. Kenneth Bock goes through the importance of looking at the entire picture because, "If you don't look, you won't see. If you don't listen, you won't hear."23:30: Dr. Kenneth Bock details the importance of both science and intuition while treating a patient. As he said, the medical world has lost the art of making diagnoses and treatment plans.26:00: Dr. Kenneth Bock discusses why he continues to do his job and why he's so passionate about what he does. He also details the books he's written over the years and why he wrote them in the first place.32: Dr. Kenneth Bock explains the importance of both taking nutrients and making sure you're taking the correct dosage. For those dealing with environmental exposures, this is even more important. To learn more about Dr. Kenneth Bock at:https://www.bockintegrative.com/https://www.facebook.com/kennethbockmd/https://www.amazon.com/Kenneth-Bock/e/B001IGNYJ4%3Fref=dbs_a_mng_rwt_scns_shareThe Mold Medic https://www.themoldmedic.com/https://www.homecleanse.com

In this discussion, Brian and Amy talk about solving thyroid problems, treating depression with diet, getting past weight-loss stalls, stress eating and other emotional factors that cause people to eat more, the great value of getting enough quality sleep, why it is not advisable to overemphasize diet to the detriment of mental or emotional health, finding an effective balance between restriction and liberality with your diet, discovering the root cause of your poor eating habits, and making realistic goals. Life's Best Medicine According to Amy: “I think we take for granted the importance of physical contact—not just sexual contact, but just hugging, holding hands, touching somebody on the arm. That human connection—physically and emotionally. We can't do life alone; we need other people. It is a blessing to have friends and family.” Thank you for listening. Could the precursors to diabetes cause obesity, and not the other way around? A look at how assumptions may be leading us to wage the wrong medical war. This is the TED talk from Peter Attia that Jonny Bowden refers to. 32:03 - Tim Noakes, an MD and University of Cape Town (UCT) emeritus professor, won the second of two decisive victories against his regulatory body, the Health Professions Council of South Africa (HPCSA). The HPCSA's Appeal Committee dismissed its own lawyers' objections and upheld in full its first committee's comprehensive ruling for Noakes in April 2017. That ruling exonerated him completely on all 10 aspects of a charge of unprofessional conduct. The appeal ended the HPCSA's unprecedented, multimillion trial of Noakes that it had dragged out for more than four years. Its ruling reverberates down medical, nutrition science and food- and drug-industry corridors of power globally to this day. It effectively endorsed Noakes's right to freedom of speech as a scientist and the evidence for low-carbohydrate, high-healthy fat (LCHF) therapies. It vindicated his vigorous opposition to South Africa's industry-led, high-carb, low-fat Food-Based Dietary Guidelines (FBDGs). The FBDGs closely follow the influential US guidelines that launched in the late 1970s and are currently under revision. Tim Noakes MD - The Lore of Running 36:08 - Jonny explains the benefits, the myths, and the ways you can optimize and feel the impact of intermittent fasting. 49:03 - Jonny explains the benefits of supplements, plus gives us his top 4 'must have' vitamins for any person. 1:01:27 - So when it comes to monitoring our bodies and testing ourselves, what does Jonny recommend are the best tests to give us an accurate view on our bodies. 1:04:41 - If the gut isn't healthy, nothing else is. Gut microbiota are the microorganisms, including bacteria and archaea, that live in the digestive tracts of vertebrates including humans, and of insects. Alternative terms include gut flora and gut microbiome. The gastrointestinal metagenome is the aggregate of all the genomes of gut microbiota. Jonny explains in simple terms how we can try and optimize our gut microbiome. 1:08:15 - Fixing the gut involves many different things and is a multi-factorial approach and most doctors don't address it.
