I had the opportunity to sit down and speak with Alyssa Shapper, Digital Marketing Director at Banyan Treatment Center here in South Florida. They dropped in at FROPRO HQ to record their podcast and I jumped in to record as well. We spoke about sobriety and goal setting in early sobriety and what makes something realistic or unrealistic when setting such goals. We focused on mental health and why it's so important to have routines and consistency in the early years of getting sober. We dove into the beginnings of FROPRO, how it started and where it's heading in the years to come. I am grateful for these opportunities and all that I get to do as a sober man in the community. Thank you to everyone fo all their support and hope you enjoy the show. You can find another copy and video recording on the Banyan YouTube channel. Have a most triumphant day.
Growing up in Maryland, Tim Lodgen started skateboarding with the local up & coming pros like Brandon Novak & Bucky Lasek. He started drinking often in high school, and eventually, it went down the road of alcoholism & drug use. When Tim joined the marines, it really made the drinking worse. Tim thought he had it under control, he would drink while holding down a job, and this justified it in his mind. He was trained in MMA, karate & other martial arts. He never made it pro, but he was a local accomplished athlete that still had the respect of his peers at this time. His drinking started to take over his life though, and Tim noticed a difference. His friend Brandon Novak went over to his house one night and tried to convince him to get help and get into rehab, but Tim wasn't ready. A couple of nights later, he went to the local liquor store after drinking, crashed into something, and made it home. His wife was upset and concerned, but let it slide. The next morning, he woke up & realized the whole side of his truck was smashed, and he had no memory of what happened. The next day he went out drinking again and smashed into another car, this time damaging the front of his truck. This was the last straw for his wife, who kicked him out of their house at this point. He was homeless, sleeping in his car drinking whiskey when Brandon Novak called him. They had arranged for him to get on a plane & into the Banyan Treatment Center, and this started his road to recovery. He's taking his medication and is able to process & deal with his emotions in a much better way. He's been staying sober with the help of his daughters and his wife, who want to help him as possible to stay on the path he's been on. After 9 months of sobriety, his oldest daughter is finally talking to him again. He takes everything one day at a time and hopes to share his story here in hopes of changing a life out there that may have been going down the same road as he was. Alyssa describes getting bullied in school and falling into the bad crowd, using marijuana for the first time to fit in. This led to harder drugs, like cocaine, ecstasy & eventually heroin. Hear her story of how addiction consumed her life for 3 years, and eventually found her way out of the darkness. In the worst of her addiction, she was living in the back of her car, down to 90 pounds, stealing and committing crimes, helplessly strung out. Her first trip to rehab failed. Even a family intervention couldn’t help her, it wasn’t until she was in the lowest state in her life and fed up with the way drugs were ruling her life, that she decided to make a change & commit to rehab a second time. That 2nd time in rehab proved to be successful, now her focus is her amazing family, with her stepson & husband, working at the Banyan Treatment Center to share her stories to help other people going through the same things as she was. As well as how she came to meet and work with the hosts of Knockin' Doorz Down when they took their trip to Philadelphia to interview Bam Margera, Brandon Novak and Mike 'The Situation' Sorrentino. In the history of treatment of people with mental health challenges, the American healthcare system has done a poor job at protecting people. Policy should ask people what they need to live the lives they want and support them in getting there, and while there have been improvements, we have more work to do. Join Hope For The Day and a panel of guests as we talk about the continued fight to ensure access to treatment, to improve quality of treatment, to reduce homelessness, incarceration, and discrimination, and ultimately move our system towards what better can look like: one where people are treated with dignity and proactive prevention of mental health challenges is prioritized. Our amazing guests this week include:-Joel Frieders: Hope for the Day's Director of Public Policy and Strategic Partnerships-Katie Rosenberg: Mayor of Wausau, WI-Kenedey Ward: Assistant Director for Hope for the Day's Project R.E.D. Join us for an exploration on trans experiences and its intersection with mental health. Biological sex implies binary or “two.” The reality is we are on a spectrum of identity and orientation, yet for years, “gender identity disorder” was listed as a sexual dysfunction. Brandon rose to fame at a young age as a professional skateboarder with the renowned Powell-Peralta team. Discovered by Tony Hawk, he was the first pro skater to ever be endorsed by Gatorade, starring in commercials alongside Michael Jordan at just 15 years old. He travelled the world with Bucky Lasek and Bam Margera, and later went on to star in the hit MTV Shows Viva La Bam and Bam’s Unholy Union. As part of the infamous Jackass crew, Brandon appeared in the motion series box office hits with the mischievous pranksters and was catapulted to super stardom. It seemed he had it all. Brandon’s story, however, took a dark turn, leading him to the depths of despair as a result of an addiction to heroin. Once a multi-millionaire, Brandon lost everything, eventually finding himself homeless on the streets of Baltimore. He was deemed unfixable and even his mother lost hope; she had purchased a cemetery plot for Brandon, as she was sure he would die. Now with more than three years sober, Brandon has risen from the ashes and become a living example that recovery is possible. He has authored the New York Times bestselling memoir Dreamseller, as well as the first-ever addiction graphic novel The Brandon Novak Chronicles. These days Brandon travels the country speaking to government officials, community residents, at risk youth, and prisoners. His message is simple: “If I can recover, so can you. The disease of addiction is not a death sentence. Your history does not have dictate your future, and as long as you’re breathing it’s never too late.” BRANDON NOVAK CURRENT PROJECTS: Brandon recently released the first-ever addiction graphic novel, The Brandon Novak Chronicles as a follow-up to his New York Times bestselling memoir Dreamseller. He is slated to release a third book in the coming year. Brandon continues to travel the country, speaking with at risk populations regarding the dangers associated with drug addiction, and recovery resources that are available to those who are struggling. Additionally, Brandon is working with Banyan Treatment Center on the launch of their newest campaign, #BeTheLight. Eric works for Banyan Treatment Center, helping people get past their harmful addictions. As we all know the opioid epidemic in the United States is a serious problem that has affected countless families. Eric himself is in recovery, with quite a few years under his belt, and I have felt it from friends and family. Lets be honest, there may be a bit of a alcohol issue with me as well. Eric gets into some of his stories from the past, how he got clean, and information for people who are currently being affected by addiction. Great talk, important talk. Of course we start with Eric's top 5 movies.

We kicked off the event by having Sherri Gross, Community Outreach Coordinator of The Road Home Program, share on being a caretaker and the types of impact that can exasperate among all parties in a household from the perspective of caring and supporting a veteran. Our tremendous panel shared from their experience and background. Vikki Webster, founder of the Reginald and Paul Sewell Foundation, touched on the impact of losing her brothers to suicide and how that impacted herself and her brothers network of friends that were a form of family, along with touching on her ongoing journey to make peace with her brothers passing.Amanda Vitrano, founder of Learn For Lauren, approached the topic from the loss of her sister Lauren who died by suicide and shared insights into how her sister’s challenges could be hidden from the family. She also shared how her family and herself have coped and found paths to healing and finding a positive forward path.John Jonak, a principal at Westmont JH in DuPage county and military veteran, shared lessons learned on confronting silences, stigma, and challenges as a veteran and with the unfortunate loss of his 9 year old daughter Katie, and his family found to find strength and healing. We had another phenomenal round of participation from our engaged audience who asked great questions and provided for further discussion and understanding! Today on The Neil Haley Show, The Total Tutor Neil Haley will interview MTV & Jackass Movie Star Brandon Novak. The Banyan Treatment Center family is proud to have Film & Television Star, former Professional Skateboarder, and New York Times bestselling author Brandon Novak as part of our Community Outreach team. Brandon's story is truly inspirational, having recovered from more than 20 years of drug and alcohol addiction. Now with more than three years sober, Brandon works with us here at Banyan helping others who are struggling with addiction to find the help they so desperately need. Brandon rose to fame at a young age as a professional skateboarder with the renowned Powell-Peralta team. Discovered by Tony Hawk, he was the first pro skater to ever be endorsed by Gatorade, starring in commercials alongside Michael Jordan at just 15 years old. He traveled the world with Bucky Lasek and Bam Margera, and later went on to star in the hit MTV Shows Viva La Bam and Bam's Unholy Union. As part of the infamous Jackass crew, Brandon appeared in the motion series box office hits with the mischievous pranksters and was catapulted to super stardom. It seemed he had it all. Brandon's story, however, took a dark turn, leading him to the depths of despair as a result of an addiction to heroin. Once a multi-millionaire, Brandon lost everything, eventually finding himself homeless on the streets of Baltimore. He was deemed unfixable and even his mother lost hope; she had purchased a cemetery plot for Brandon, as she was sure he would die. If you or a loved one is struggling with addiction, call Brandon Novak today at 610-546-2608.
Josh Gamaitoni is here today. Josh is the National Director of Business Development for Banyan Treatment Center. Josh has helped so many people and is a legend in the treatment world. It wasn’t always that way, though. Josh started doing drugs when he was 10 and went on a downward spiral as he grew up. He eventually tried some treatment options, but nothing stuck until he decided that getting sober was something he was going to stick to for a year. After getting sober, he became a janitor at a church. He also realized that being sober was something that he enjoyed and made it a permanent lifestyle choice. His confidence also grew, and he became sincerely interested in talking to people and helping them. Eventually, he began working in treatment and became the legend he is today. Josh and Tom also go way back as they got sober together at the same time and the same place. Ben joins them for this inspirational conversation. Show Notes [04:23] Josh started using drugs at 10 years old and went down a rapid path of addiction. He got sober around 21 years old. This was the first real program he went into. [07:01] He used afterwards, and needed help. He was broken and really wanted to get sober and do something in his life. [08:42] He is a firm believer in getting away. Going to South Florida helped Josh. [10:15] He got into a really great program. He did 45 days and moved into a recovery home. HOP is a house of principles. [17:12] It's beneficial to get out of your own backyard when you are going into recovery. [20:15] If you surround yourself with people who you want to be like, do what they do. [21:57] Josh realized he did have a drinking problem. He had an anything that made him feel better problem. [24:01] Josh became a janitor at the church. He soon learned how to talk to people and eventually, he became the National Director of Business Development at Banyan Treatment. [28:58] Josh manages and helps people do what he does. He also goes to the clinics and shares his story. [33:06] Communication skills are so important. We need to talk to people in a way that they are able to receive that. [33:43] Trust and transparency are very important, because people need to feel safe and know that you have their best interest at heart. [37:37] It's okay to take the time and see a therapist. It's okay to not be okay and do what it takes to feel better. [40:22] Josh is a huge fan of interventions. It's planned chaos. There are different approaches. You can usually find one that works. [47:29] Sometimes people are so crazy when they are out there, that they just need to be stopped. Also people sometimes don't know what they want. [50:50] How do you know you want sobriety if you've never been sober before? [53:40] Josh spends his time today, helping people find sobriety. His wife is also a therapist. He loves what he does. [01:00:16] Josh wants more resources available and one day there will be a way to help everyone that is lost. [01:04:35] Holding the truth in his heart is one thing that has helped Josh during the trying times. Links and Resources: Banyan Treatment Center

In the third episode of the Champions Podcast, our hosts Mike Rubin and Coach Phil are joined by Luke Wollet, former Kent State and New Orleans Saints safety. Luke shares his incredible faith journey, and talks about the career-ending battle with drug addiction. We get our second segments of "Eli Wants to Know" and "Coaches Corner". Some interesting nuggets from our conversation with Luke: *"I am thankful that God transformed one of the greatest pains and darkest times into a purpose." * He talks about how one "innocent" decision to take a percocet to help with pain, turned into a full blown heroin addiction. * He talked about running to the bathroom to get high during a workout with the New Orleans Saints. * "The football mentality of handling your own problems. You got yourself into something, you get yourself out." * "The number one thing the enemy wants is for us to be isolated" * Coach Phil shared the mindset of many coaches, "We don't want to know as coaches, we want to win and if I know, then I have to do something about it." * "Winning can't be the goal, it has to be the byproduct." * Luke talks about getting to the point where he felt like the world would be better without him here and then the divine appointment of his father driving four and a half hours and showing up at his door that night. * "I didn't have the courage to ask for help, but thank God I had the courage to accept it." * Being told to read Esther 4:14 and the impact of that. * "It's relationship over religion"Bible Verses Discussed * James 4:8a - Draw near to God, and he will draw near to you. (ESV) * Romans 10:9 - because, if you confess with your mouth that Jesus is Lord and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved. (ESV) * John 10:10 - The thief comes only to steal and kill and destroy. I came that they may have life and have it abundantly.
