What the Rabbis Know That I Never Learned in Church is an eye-opening examination of what Chris-tians can learn about God from the ones who call Him Adonai. Author Chaim Bentorah has spentforty years talking with, learning from, and studying with rabbis in order that Christians can experi-ence the Bible through a new lens. One of the key lessons he learned along the way? There are alwaysnew insights awaiting us in Scripture:“Rabbis have taught me that even though the Word of God is inspired, it has many layers of understanding. It is a miracle that humanity has a book that speaks to us all.”By unearthing historical and cultural contexts, introducing age-old concepts not often seen in mod-ern Christian sermons, and digging into the original Greek and Hebrew languages and their sub-tleties, readers will learn more about the God of the Bible and the language in it by the people whospend their lives studying it.Bentorah's book will inspire readers to break the invisible boundaries we set for ourselves and pas-sionately seek to uncover more and more of God's boundless wisdom. Chaim Bentorah Chaim Bentorah has a B.A. in Jewish Studies from the Moody Bible Institute, an M.A. in Old Testament and Hebrew from the Denver Seminary and a PhD in Biblical Archaeology. He taught Classical Hebrew and Old Testament for thirteen years at World Harvest Bible College and Modern Hebrew at the Christian Center High School. Chaim Bentorah is presently teaching Hebrew, Aramaic and Greek to lay Christian leaders and pastors in the Metro Chicago area as well as holding Saturday meetups at a local cafe in Oak Park, Illinois. He writes daily word studies on his blog at www.chaimbentorah.com. He speaks to church and para church groups about the nature and means of studying the Old Testament in the Original Hebrew. He is convinced that any Christian no matter their age, educational background or abilities can study the Word of God in the original languages using the resources that are available today online and through electronic media. He conducts classes in how to use these resources to their full advantage.WebsiteFacebook

When the young Zion, Ill., band Local H shrunk from four members to two, leader Scott Lucas decided he liked the guitar-and-drums attack and has stuck with it for more than 30 years. Local H has had its moments of popularity (the 1996 album As Good As Dead and single “Bound for the Floor”), critical triumphs that fell short commercially (1998's dazzling concept album Pack Up the Cats) and subsequent albums that showcase Lucas' smart, melodic songwriting, his formidable vocal and guitar chops, and the duo's ferocious interplay. Local H is marking the 20th anniversary of Whatever Happened to P.J. Soles?, the album that Lucas thinks best represents him, with deluxe rereleases and shows, including the tour finale Oct. 16 at Metro Chicago. The previous evening Lucas is premiering his hybrid Local H concert film Lifers at Chicago's Music Box Theatre. The ever-thoughtful Lucas has much to say about bands, labels, maintaining a vision and the meaning of success.

In this episode of Seeing Them Live, Charles welcomes accountant and live music enthusiast Steve Pothel, a prominent figure from Charles' book, "Ticket Stub Stories: A Memoir of Live Music." Joining them is co-host and producer Doug Florzak. Steve reminisces about his early concert experiences, correcting his memory about his first concert, which turned out to be The Cure's "Wish" tour followed by Lollapalooza ‘92 before U2's Zoo TV show. They discuss iconic venues like The World (now known by various names) and Alpine Valley, sharing stories from their concert adventures. Steve recalls a memorable moment during an Ice Cube performance at Lollapalooza involving a sod fight instigated by the rapper, creating an unforgettable atmosphere. The conversation shifts to their DJing days at a bar called the Tender Trap, where Steve and Charles spun records for an alternative night. They reminisce about attending concerts together, including a memorable encounter with L7 at Lounge Axe, arranged through Louie, who happened to be related to the drummer. Steve also recounts their experiences at House of Blues shows, including a chaotic Danzig concert where the crowd was rowdy, and a Monster Magnet show where Louie's connection secured them access to the Foundation Room. They delve into their shared love for bands like The Psychedelic Furs and their numerous concert outings together, highlighting the influence of music on their lives and relationships. Reflecting on their concert experiences, they share anecdotes of meeting band members and navigating the vibrant Chicago music scene. Throughout the episode, Steve and Charles' passion for live music shines through, offering listeners a glimpse into their memorable concert journeys.Steve also reminisces about a memorable encounter at the Foundation Room, where he found himself chatting with members of Stabbing Westward and Monster Magnet. The lively atmosphere of the venue, complete with private rooms for bands and a third-floor balcony offering prime seating, sets the stage for unexpected interactions. Steve recounts how Monster Magnet's Phil reached out to invite Lisa, his girlfriend, to their show, ultimately sending a limo to pick her up from a wedding reception. Reflecting on past concerts, Steve shares his disappointing experiences at shows by System of a Down and The Killers, citing crowd behavior and sound quality as factors. Charles joins the conversation, recalling their shared love for live music and their experiences attending concerts together, including memorable shows by the Psychedelic Furs. The discussion turns somber as they remember Mars Williams, the saxophonist for the Psychedelic Furs, who passed away after battling cancer. Despite the loss, they cherish the memories of his electrifying performances.BANDS:Adele, Alanis Morissette, Cypress Hill, Harry Styles, House of Pain, Ice Cube, Imagine Dragons, Jesus and Mary Chain, Joan Jett, Journey, Korn, L7, Led Zeppelin II, Liquid Soul, Lush, Metric, Ministry, Monster Magnet, Monster Magnet, Pearl Jam, Porno for Pyros, Psychedelic Furs, Rage Against the Machine, Red Hot Chili Peppers, REM, Smashing Pumpkins, Soundgarden, Stabbing Westward, Stabbing Westward, Stone Temple Pilots, System of a Down, Temple of the Dog, The Cult, The Cult, The Cure, The Cure, The Killers, The Psychedelic Furs, Two Ton Boa, U2, Wetleg.VENUES:Alpine Valley (East Troy, Wisconsin), Aragon Ballroom (Chicago, Illinois), Chastain Park (Atlanta, Georgia), House of Blues (Chicago, Illinois), Lounge Axe (Chicago, Illinois), The Congress (Chicago, Illinois), The Metro (Chicago, Illinois), The World Music Theatre (Tinley Park, Illinois). Are you now, or have you ever been disabled? That's not a trick question. Artist, art therapist, and disability activist Bri Beck asserts that disability exists along a complex spectrum –– visible, hidden, physical, developmental, temporary, persistent, evident at birth, resulting from trauma –– rather than a simple binary. And yet… Even with close proximity to it, so much uneasiness surrounds disability and those for whom it is a fact of life. So, what's up with our everyday ableism, especially in therapeutic spaces? "There's always a very strange weirdness, and I find, at least in my experience, that it's like, people are trying to show you, 'I'm cool with this. I'm gonna make sure you know I'm fine!'" says Bri, who lives with pseudoachondroplasia, a form of dwarfism. Bri navigates a world where well-meaning folks can quickly cross the line. "As somebody that's apparently, outwardly, disabled, I have people touch me all the time, strangers that just don't know me, and that's so much, like, boundary-crossing." Bri's experiences don't end with touching. They often include a blatant disregard for her agency. Out-maneuvering such ableism is exhausting, says Bri, and puts me in mind of the tiresome intent of "good white people." Both broadcast their opposition to -isms through actions or language so beyond what is necessary that their efforts* become caricatures of authentic human interaction. *Insert face-palm here because we can all recall a situation (or many) in which we've overcompensated for our discomfort in exactly the same cringe-worthy manner. March of 1992 was somewhat of a breakthrough for Pearl Jam. After returning from a successful tour overseas featuring memorable shows in Germany and Amsterdam, they found themselves in a major spotlight getting the call to perform on MTV's Unplugged. Although it wouldn't premiere for 2 months, the band's rise was imminent and their popularity in America had grew exponentially from the time they left. This show at The Cabaret Metro in Chicago, as documented in the Let's Play Two documentary, was important for so many reasons. Not only was it a hometown show for both Ed and The Smashing Pumpkins who acted as the opening act, it was a platform where they had to prove that they belonged up on that stage headlining these clubs shows and even bigger shows to come. The guys from U2 were there that night to scout them to be an opening act for what would be the Italian run of the Zooropa tour. Everything seemed to be falling into place at the time. This performance is classic 1992. You have some improvs, including Rockin' In The Free World played on the spot due to a drum issue, great performances of Ten songs and an encore where they shared the stage with the Pumpkins saluting them in their hometown. Mark Hammerstrom (AKA Hammer) spent the first 18 years of his life in Metro Chicago with Summer trips to Florida to spend time with his grandparents. His grandparents happened to be friends with the charismatic and longtime manager of the Los Angeles Dodgers, Tommy Lasorda. As you'll hear, Mark has fond memories of Coach Lasorda. After high school, Mark went from the Chicago area to Georgia Southern University, causing a certain degree of culture shock. After college, one of his first jobs was working for the cleverly named Bankers' Bank in Atlanta. As a massive lover of sports, Mark has always been a hockey fan. Amazingly, he started playing in his forties and loves every minute on the ice. Mark and his wife drove 8+ hours from Atlanta to hang out with Paul and his wife. During that visit, we had a chance sit down and record this conversation.
The United Way of Metro Chicago has always had a mission to help the people and the neighborhoods most in need. But as racial tensions and civil unrest hit those very neighborhoods, Sean Garrett saw the needs increase, but so did the support they received.

It is widely known that heart disease still remains the leading cause of death in both men and women, but did you know that up to 80 percent of heart disease is preventable? Lisa Hinton, the Executive Director of American Heart Association’s Metro Chicago joins us in this week’s episode to talk about this non-profit organization’s combat against cardiovascular diseases and stroke through public health advocacy and education. Possessing a leadership role, Lisa Hinton is a strong believer that the best leaders do not focus on the things people can do for them, but what they can do to serve the people. She also brings attention to the fact that Chicago has the largest life expectancy gap in the country, and touches on how we can decrease this gap through research based solutions and treatments. Tune in to learn more about Lisa Hinton’s distinct leadership approach, and the initiatives she takes to make a collective impact on the health of our communities. . . . . With over 14 years of non-profit fundraising and management experience, Lisa Hinton dedicates herself to oversee fundraising and community engagement activities, as the Executive Director of American Heath Association’s Metro Chicago. Receiving her Bachelors in Health and Sport Studies from Miami University (OH), and her Masters in Non-Profit Management from DePaul University, Lisa was always passionate about working towards causes that advocate for the betterment of public health. Continuing this vision, she worked with several organizations such as National Multiple Sclerosis Society, and The Leukemia and Lymphoma Society, where she supervised and managed teams and fundraising staff. Lisa believes that we should focus on improving external factors that affect health such as economic stability, access to healthcare, and the opportunity to obtain proper education.

Today's episode features double bassist Trevor Jones. It actually amazes me that this is the first time that Trevor has been on the podcast. Trevor kind of does it all: he studied classical bass with Rob Kassinger at DePaul University but got a music education degree as well He has played for years in the rock band Molehill but also maintains a full-time performing schedule as a theater musician, and he has a salaried double bass teaching job at Illinois Wesleyan University as well. About Trevor: Based in Chicago, independent artist Trevor Jones works in a variety of musical settings. He performs with regional orchestras throughout the Midwest including the Elgin Symphony and is a substitute with the Grant Park Orchestra. He has also recorded for Realize Records on Chris Bruni’s album Watch Me Burn and Kate Quinby's album Tribute To Water and has co-written and recorded two albums: Tin God and Equinox with his Chicago-based alternative rock group Molehill. Trevor is the upright and electric bassist at The Marriott Theatre in Lincolnshire, IL and his credits include Jeff®-Award Winning Musical Hero that was premiered in the Summer of 2012 and reprised in 2014 at Asolo Repertory Theatre in Sarasota, FL. For the Glory with music Tony Award® nominee Frank Wildhorn (Jekyll and Hyde, The Scarlet Pimpernel), Battlecry by Paul Bogaev (Aida, Spiderman). and the World Premiere of October Sky. While growing up in Gettysburg, PA Trevor studied double bass with Duane Botterbusch of the Harrisburg Symphony, and continued with Andrew Kohn of the Pittsburgh Opera at West Virginia University. In 2009 he completed his Master’s degree at DePaul University where he studied with Rob Kassinger of the Chicago Symphony Orchestra. While studying at DePaul, Trevor performed with the Civic Orchestra of Chicago and the DePaul Symphony Orchestra under the direction of Cliff Colnot. Trevor earned his Bachelor’s degree in Music Education at West Virginia University. Trevor performs with the Chicago-based rock act Molehill. Molehill headlines some of Chicago’s most prominent venues and tours throughout the country. Highlights include appearances at CBS Studio Chicago, Metro (Chicago), Summerfest and SXSW. Their song “The Repeating” charted in the Top 10 of the KKBB Speciality Charts in 2015. Trevor has won an ASCAP+ Award for his songwriting for Molehill. Trevor is in demand as an educator in the Chicago area and maintains a studio at Midwest Young Artists , the preeminent youth music program in the Midwest. In addition to teaching at MYA, Trevor is also the Instructor of Double Bass at Illinois Wesleyan University at DePaul University where he teaches String Pedagogy.
Tuesday, November 18, 2014 Transit-oriented development (TOD) is defined by the Regional Transportation Authority (RTA) of Northeastern Illinois as moderate to high-density, mixed-use communities generally located within a half-mile radius (10-minute walk) of a rail or bus station designed to maximize walkability and transit access. Interest in TOD is driven by its ability to reduce traffic congestion; changing demographics; and a desire to live in mixed-use, sustainable, and walkable communities accessible to transit. In this program, Heather Tabbert, AICP, and Tony Manno, both from the RTA, discuss how the Community Planning program has transformed over the years in response to the needs of communities, the results of a recent survey of TOD residents, and case studies of several diverse communities from throughout the region that have taken TOD planning from vision to reality.

p> This week as part of our anniversary calibrations we have Reverend Larry L. Greenfield (IM) executive Minister of American Baptist Churches of Metro Chicago speaking to us. Reverend Greenfield uses as the bases of his text Mark 10:17-24. Reverend Greenfield reminds us that as humans we can not alone enter the dominion of God, it is only though God can this be possible. In this reading Mark relates how Jesus showed his disciples the difficulty a man would have trying to enter the dominion of God, and what a man should do to see that God would make this possible. Thanks to everyone listening to our podcast. Please drop us a Note at fbcpreacher@fbcpreacher.com or submit your comments here on the web page about anything you might hear in this ministry. We enjoy hearing your comments about our ministry or anything you might think of to improve this ministry. Again thank you all for listening and have a blessed week from the pastoral and technical staff at First Baptist Church of Chicago.
