There's a good chance that if you're a guitar fan, you've seen Nathaniel Murphy's gear demos—either on his Instagram account, where he goes by @zeppelinbarnatra, or on the Chicago Music Exchange page. His solo arrangements of classic tunes display his next-level technique and knack for clever arranging, and he makes our jaws drop every time he posts. When we learned that the Irish guitarist is a huge fan of U2's The Edge, we knew he had to be our expert for this episode.Together with Nathaniel, we're decoding our favorite eras of the Edge's tones—from his early Memory Man days through his expanding delay rack rig, into his 1990s Achtung Baby sounds, and all the way through to his Sphere rig. How does he get those amazing delay tones? And what are those cool picks he uses? This episode supported by Voodoo Lab: https://voodoolab.com/Follow Nick: https://www.instagram.com/nickmillevoiFollow Jason: https://www.instagram.com/jasonshadrickGet at us: 100guitarists@premierguitar.comCall/Text: 319-423-9734Podcast powered by Sweetwater. This episode starts off with Zach and Rhett catching each other up on their 4th of July festivities. Rhett's was classic: he treated some visiting European friends to fireworks off a dock, barbecue, smoked wings, more fireworks, and a bunch of beer. Zach, meanwhile, was knocking on doors to tell neighbors to knock off the mortar shelling in the middle of the night. To each their own. Then they're joined by Nathaniel Murphy, the Chicago-based guitarist who has racked up nearly 400,000 followers on Instagram with jaw-dropping videos of solo guitar work. Rhett doesn't mince words—he says Murphy is “one of the best players out there.” Murphy's videos break people's brains, they say: no one can work out how he's playing all the parts by himself at the same time. Plus, Murphy works full-time now with Chicago Music Exchange, where he brushed shoulders with Noel Gallagher and Carlos Santana within a few days of one another this summer.Murphy shares how he came to the U.S. to coach soccer for nearly a decade before being hired to do video demos for CME. He was busking downtown Chicago, too, and within a few years, CME brought him on full-time to cut videos. When it came time to join Instagram, he registered with his infamous handle, @ZeppelinBarnatra. Murphy breaks down how the moniker came to be when he entered a contest to win tickets to Led Zeppelin's 2007 reunion concert.Murphy names his favorite all-time guitar—Noel Gallagher's Gibson J-150, which Gallagher recently signed for him—before the crew reflects on how to behave when meeting your guitar heroes. That leads to a discussion of U2's The Edge, whom Rhett and Murphy defend from detractors. They also agree that Teles are the most versatile guitars out there, but Zach, ever the contrarian, dissents: “To me, there's a reason why all the dudes that played Teles back in the day switched to Les Pauls,” he shrugs. Murphy talks about his current favorite players, like Justin Derrico, Stephen Taranto, and Michael Romeo, then the trio dissect different picking techniques and go long on Blue Chip pick manufacturing processes.Rhett, who groans that he has the touch of a blacksmith when it comes to guitar playing, praises Murphy's sensitive playing. But even Murphy, with his prodigious playing, says he gets overwhelmed watching other players' styles. In guitar playing, as in life, the grass is always greener.Big thanks to StewMac for sponsoring this episode. Resonator guitars have so many myths tied to them. They have to be played differently. They're way too expensive. They are only good for one style. But is any of this actually true? On today's episode of Acoustic Tuesday, you'll get a chance to see my top 10 favorite resonator guitars. This list is made up of many different resonator guitars at different price points. Every guitar on this list is a great bang for your buck regardless. I love resonator guitars because they have some great punchy tones. Like a banjo, the decay on resonators can be really quick, but as a soon as you add a slide, the tone morphs so much. But this brings us to the first common misconception: resonators have to be played with a slide. This couldn't be farther from the truth. Resonator guitars can be played like a normal guitar. Sure, using a slide gives it a very bluesy or country sound, but in reality, they sound just as good without a slide. You don't need any different techniques really.  There's also a perception that resonator guitars are expensive. Well, I'm here to tell you that there are so many options that don't have to break the bank. Just make sure to watch the full segment to see my picks for the best affordable resonator guitars! Streaming music has a lot of benefits. But it can also have some downsides. In this video, I explain the five main disadvantages to streaming music and show you how to avoid them. Music streaming, whether it's through Spotify or Youtube, has to be one of the greatest expansions in music consumption. For a few bucks a month, you have access to millions of songs. You have seemingly infinite choices. But there are plenty of negatives to this easy consumption of music. Do you remember the days where you had to go to a music store, search for an album, purchase the album, and invest time into making that album worth it?  With streaming, you lose all of the process and ritual that made the discovery of new music magical. We've lost the cultural touchstone of sharing music through word of mouth recommendations. Instead, we're fed recommendations by an algorithm — which is incredibly helpful at times, but lacks a human touch. There are plenty of reasons to like streaming music, but there is a dark side to all the convenience that streaming music provides. This episodes seeks to address some of those issues.  In addition to talking about the dark side of music streaming, you'll get a big update from Heartbreaker Guitars  on everything from new models to supply chain explanations.  Featured in this episode... - Heartbreaker Guitars   - Furch Guitars   - Molly Tuttle   - Chicago Music Exchange   - Billy Strings

This week, Emily and Andrew talk about subscription boxes for guitarists. Do they make sense? Is it possible to do it right? Can it even recover after a certain brand took advantage of its consumers? They also talk about how Emily just turned 30 and some discount pedals she picked up. Andrew talks about his new pedalboard and cables and about his dream to visit Chicago Music Exchange. They also mention the problematic elements of Island of the Blue Dolphins and Billy Gibbons.  Special shout out to Dwarfcraft Devices and their new zine! Sponsored by...you? Can you believe we made it all the way to 20 episodes? Neither can we, but we're gonna just keep going with it! Plug in your earbuds or turn up or radio cause this one is a doozy! Ian is joined this week by co-hosts Cody Clark and Mikey Law to discuss all things the Windy City! Topics of discussion range from visiting the Chicago Music Exchange, peeing in traffic, and eating shitty deep dish pizza. No matter what their opinion on deep dish might be, all three can agree that Chicago's music scene is no joke. Speaking of music, this episode includes reviews of new releases from The Great Deceivers, DROOL, Krozer, Sonny Falls, and of course, the interviewees of the episode, Squid. They were kind enough to let us premiere a brand new single called "Big Red" off their forthcoming album Soda Pop due 5/20. Feel free to skip to the 25 minute mark to hear "Big Red" and the interview without our ramblings! Squid is a progressive, shoegaze, math/weirdo rock band who played their final show last June at Pittsburgh's own Mr. Roboto Project. Ian had the pleasure of sitting with them for a few minutes before their gig and started to talk about the beginning of the band, the future for all four of them, and all things "Watersports and Soda Pop". We hope you love this episode and if you enjoyed any of the music you heard this episode, go buy a song or like a band page. Anything helps and in this day and age its more important than ever to support our local music scenes! Tune in next Friday for more of the best music you haven't heard yet! Since launching Reverb.com in 2013, David has been working side-by-side with his growing team to make the online marketplace the best place for musicians to buy and sell new, used, vintage and handmade music gear. As the company’s evangelist and product visionary, David has grown Reverb.com into the most popular music gear website in the world. David started Reverb.com shortly after purchasing well-known musical instrument shop, Chicago Music Exchange, and growing frustrated with the process of buying and selling guitars online. The company expects to handle about $120 million in equipment sales this year, tripling last year's volume.
