In the wake of a “major Summit” on Ukraine which neither the Russians nor the Chinese attended, the war remains as murky and inconclusive as ever. And it's this murkiness and inconclusiveness that the San Francisco based writer Sasha Vasiljuk explores in her new novel, Your Presence is Mandatory. But Vasiljuk's semi-autobiographical, semi-fictional canvas focuses on more than just Putin's invasions of Ukraine. It's a sweeping panorama of the last seventy-five years of Ukrainian history - although there's nothing particularly sweeping or panoramic about the awkward secrets that Vasiljuk digs up in this most most morally murky of geographies.Sasha Vasilyuk is a journalist and author of the debut novel Your Presence is Mandatory (Bloomsbury) about a Ukrainian Jewish WWII soldier and his family who reckon with his lifelong secrecy. The novel will also come out in Italy, France, Germany, Finland and Brazil in Fall 2024. Sasha grew up between Ukraine and Russia before immigrating to the U.S. at the age of 13. She has a MA in Journalism from New York University and her nonfiction has appeared in The New York Times, CNN, TIME, Los Angeles Times, Harper's Bazaar, BBC Radio, USA Today, KQED, San Francisco Chronicle, The Telegraph, and Narrative. She has won several writing awards, including the Solas Award for Best Travel Writing and the NATJA award. Besides writing, she has founded a leading wedding PR company and the first coworking space in San Francisco. She also spent a year traveling alone around the world. Sasha is a graduate of Lowell High School, UC Berkeley (BA in Comparative Literature and Italian Studies), and New York University (MA in Journalism). She lives in San Francisco with her husband and two children.Named as one of the "100 most connected men" by GQ magazine, Andrew Keen is amongst the world's best known broadcasters and commentators. In 2007 Ukraine, following the death of her husband, Yefim Shulman, Nina finds a letter he wrote to the KGB confessing the secret he'd kept for over 50 years. If it came out that his unit was wiped out and he was taken as a prisoner of Germany during WWII, he would have been considered a traitor to the USSR. After surviving the Red Army, Nazi prison camps and forced labor, Yefim decides to keep the secret of his survival, and invents a story for his wife and children. In the post-war regime, the wrong lie can mean exile or death, and when years later, his presence is demanded by the KGB, he knows that it'll be easier for him and his family if he's completely honest. Your Presence Is Mandatory (Bloomsbury, 2024) is a story of Jewish survival, Russian deception, secrecy, and societal disfunction, and the struggle of Ukrainians to endure another war. The Joy of Cruising Podcast

This week on The Joy of Cruising Podcast, I am delighted to welcome Judi Cohen, known in the cruise community as Traveling Judi. I featured Traveling Judi in my second cruising book, Cruising Interrupted  amzn.to/3seFU8y in a section called “Cruisers Like You and Me... Sort Of.” Traveling Judi is a fervent world cruiser with a penchant for smaller, and even tiny ships relative to mainstream cruise ships. Judi is also a travel writer extraordinaire—in fact, I met her through my association with Quirky Cruise online magazine, for whom she is a significant contributor. Quirky was also featured in Cruising Interrupted and on the podcast. From travelingjudi.com: Judi has traveled the world in search of unique experiences and off-the-beaten-path destinations. She is also a connoisseur of small-ship cruises that pack big adventure, and local cultural and dining experiences. Judi became a full-time traveler and travel advisor in 2015 following her 35-year career in engineering and transportation, and today she writes about her experiences to inspire others to step outside their comfort zones and embrace new kinds of adventures. Judi has been to over 90 countries on six continents and enjoys sharing her stories along the way. Her training and experience as a Health Coach and as a Travel Advisor allows her to plan trips and seek out wellness destinations and experiences.  Combined with her story-telling  skills, she has become an accomplished Travel Writer accredited by SATW,  NATJA and IFWTWA, and her work has been published on travel websites such as Quirkycruise.com. She is also a Board Member on the Travel Media Association of Canada's (TMAC) National Board and Board Secretary. It was fun interviewing Judi for Cruising Interrupted. A couple of anecdotes stick in my mind. One, was from Judi's recollection of her expedition cruise to Antarctica. ‘…one of the most memorable—maybe not in a good way—was crossing the Drake Passage. It was rough, it was crazy, and my husband gets seasick in a bathtub,' Judi laughed. The other was asking Judi about her bucket list. As you know I ask all interviewees about what's on their bucket list. Judi's response was colorful and hilarious. Unfortunately, I can't repeat it on the podcast! What I can quote is ‘I liken bucket list to ‘before I die.' For me, I am much more forward-thinking than that. I want to do these things while I am healthy, while I can, and while I am still interested. I don't know, talking about what I am going to do before I die just has a negative connotation...I'm more about turning my dreams into memories every day.” Support the show

Schmunzeln und Staunen garantiert, meint Kerstin: Also alles in bester Ordnung in Folge 56. --- Send in a voice message: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/irgendwasmit5/message

Today we are lucky enough to be joined by Gary to hear all about his amazing adventures, unlikely career path, and what has kept him excited and engaged with his work for the last three decades. It is hard to know where to start with someone who has done so much and gone to so many places! Gary gives us a couple of select glimpses of some of the amazing sights he has seen and cultures he has connected with. He also gets into using photography as a way to document his travels, and why he will always put traveling ahead of taking photos. Our guest shares some of his personal opinions on accommodation options, different types of sharks, and what is most important when setting out on a journey. For Gary, travel has always been about the unique moments that you get to live in, rather than where you sleep, and what you pack in your bag. We think this is a great reminder about the essence of life on the road, and hearing it from someone so steeped in the culture of traveling really adds resonance to the idea. Join us today to hear all he has to say!Today on On Arrival: •    The first trip that Gary made for business in the 1990s and how he documented the journey. •    Gary's decision to hit the road and keep traveling around the world for a whole year!•    How Gary approached creating his travel website before Instagram.  •    The impacts of the pandemic on Gary's work and how he reacted to the shutdowns.  •    The focuses of Gary's podcast and how he tied his experience and expertise into the show. •    Gary's initial impetus to start taking photos, his first camera, and the lessons he learned early on. •    The reality of travel writing and photography in 2021; shallow content and traffic mongering. •    Reasons that Gary believes so strongly in podcasting as a powerful medium in the current climate.  •    Hostels versus luxury hotels; Gary weighs in on which he prefers! •    The things that still get Gary excited to take photos and his desire to venture into the unknown.  •    How Gary got kicked out of Kiribati and the resultant changes with regards to visa regulations.  •    Experiences of diving with sharks and Gary's feelings about whales sharks and great whites.  Check out Gary Arndt's Blog and follow him on InstagramIf you enjoyed this episode, subscribe to the show wherever you listen to podcasts. He is the author of several books including Travel Writing 2.0, A Better Life for Half the Price, and The World's Cheapest Destinations, now in its fifth edition. TIPS FOR TRAVELING ON A BUDGET Visiting a place where the cost of living is cheaper ends up being a bit cheaper if you are going to take a vacation there. If the cost of living is cheaper that means dinners, admission prices and even room costs tend to be lower than your home country or city. Just checking out smaller cities in the US rather than going to a big city like NYC or Chicago can help save you on the budget. There is still a lot to offer in smaller cities including museums, waterparks, aquariums, etc. Smaller cities are also usually easier to get around being that they are not as crowded. In other countries there are different regions that are budget friendly for families In Europe there are two great budget areas; one in Eastern Europe and one in the Balkans. The Southeast Asian countries are pretty close together and easy to get to, making this area a backpacker favorite. South America also has some great budget friendly areas to visit. Malaysia is one of these budget areas that doesn’t get thought about often, but it holds a lot to explore. The roads are easy to travel, the food is cheap and good and you don’t have to worry about the water, it is safe to drink. There are some destinations like Iceland or Canada that if you have had them on your bucket list some places are offering cheaper prices than normal and the exchange rate is really good. You should definitely look into these destinations if you have wanted to go there at all, this might be your opportunity to take that trip at a lower price that you could have before. (Just keep in mind that the Canadian border is closed until at least the end of July and, while Iceland is reopening on June 15th, you need to get tested either before you arrive or on arrival or be subject to a 14-day quarantine.) It may be tougher for families but the more you leave yourself open the options of making the trip trip cheaper increases. Travel dates are a big cost change if you are more flexible. Having kids in school makes this harder to do but it is definitely something to keep an eye on when your kids are younger and you are more capable to pull them out of school. You also want to think about high travel times for different destinations. Peak season for travel is going to be different in different countries and destinations. This will make your trip cheaper if you are able to go at a non-peak time. Other kinds of accommodations and travel options can make a big difference in your budget. FAVORITE TRAVEL GEAR Tim loves to wear either ExOffico or CragHoppers clothing. He has tried out a bunch of different brands of gear and loves how well these brands have held up over the years. He will also almost always choose something that is quick dry and he can wash it in the sink if he has to. He has recently been wearing some Prana items because he likes the comfort and how they look. If he is going anywhere that he thinks might be busy, he will wear pick-pocket proof pants to keep his items safe. As for socks, he loves his Darn Tough socks that are very durable and comfortable to wear and are made in the USA. For shoes he likes a lot of different kinds but Sanuk’s are the best for compact travel. They are comfortable and they are also easily compressed and can fit nicely in your bag for travel, no matter what kind of bag you have.
