If you're a mum navigating the challenges of life with a new baby this one is for you. I'm diving deep into how I personally implemented the Neuroprotective Developmental Care (Possums) approach with my son, who's now 2.5 years old.Register for my FREE Support your Baby's Sleep without Sleep Training Workshop here. It's on Monday Dec 9th 2024 at 11pm ACDT but the recording will also be sent to everyone who registers. NDC is an evidence-based method that integrates the latest research from lactation science, neuroscience, attachment psychology, and even sleep science. It's all about supporting both you and your baby over the crucial first year of life—and beyond. For those of you familiar with Possums, which many of you might have heard of, NDC was formerly known by that name. I share a bit more about why the name change happened in the episode. In this episode, I'm focusing on the five key areas of NDC: Baby's Health, Mother's Mental Health, Feeding, Sensory Nourishment, and Sleep. I'll be sharing my personal experiences—what worked for me with Archie in those early months—and how I applied these principles to ensure his well-being and mine.I'll also talk about the importance of tailored support during this journey. Each family and baby is unique, so while I'll be sharing what worked for us, remember that what works for one may not work for another. The advice in this episode is general, but I always recommend seeking personalised guidance for your specific situation.Resources mentioned in this episode...Statement by Dr Pamela Douglas concerning the charity Possums for Mothers and Babies.Podcast Episode 78. While in the hospital, we always aim to keep mum and baby together, and your baby will routinely 'room in' with you. However, if your baby requires more extensive medical support after birth, they may need to be transferred to a Special Care Nursery/Baby Unit, or a Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU). This can understandably be a very distressing situation for a new mum and family, and it is usually quite unexpected. This is where having a plan to support your breastfeeding journey becomes crucial. In this episode I discuss:Common reasons why a mum and baby may be separated at birth and unable to breastfeed. Why nipple stimulation and frequent milk removal are key for building and maintaining supply. The importance of skin to skin with your baby.Hand expressing vs using an electric breast pump. How often to express to protect milk supply. When you book your Postnatal Midwifery Package with us you receive messaging support from your midwife between appointments, and whilst in hospital after your baby is born - this comes in super handy for navigating situations like this as you'll have your midwife cheering you on and supporting you every step of the way. In this episode of Changing Birth, I delve into the top-up trap and its impact on breastfeeding. We explore how supplementing breastfed babies with formula can inadvertently disrupt breastfeeding success and lead to challenges for new mums. I step you through the two common reasons why women find themselves in the top up trap, some of the long-term effects of early formula introduction, and we discuss strategies for navigating the top-up trap and getting off the cycle and back to exclusively breastfeeding. This is one of the most common hurdles that I work with clients to overcome, and I would so love any pregnant mamas to have a listen so you can hopefully avoid this cycle in the first place! In your journey of pregnancy and birth, having the right support team can make such difference to your experience. I often get asked what the difference is between a doula and a midwife - which is a very valid question! While both can provide incredible support during pregnancy, labour and birth, their roles, scope, and care provided differ. Let's explore these differences to help you make an informed choice about your birth support. I also share my experience having both a midwife and doula at my birth. In today's episode I have the pleasure of chatting with the lovely Christie Smith - a midwife and founder of Nurture and Mindful Motherhood. We've known each other for a few years but also had our babies only a few days apart - so have been on this motherhood journey together. In this week's podcast we are doing things a little differently and I am chatting with Lara Jezeph who openly shares her two birth stories. Hearing others birth stories is so powerful so I can't wait for you to listen to this ep! Lara honestly shares about her two birth experiences, and more specifically her first traumatic birth through her local public hospital, and then her healing birth with her second baby with a private midwife. We chatted about the care providers she explored and then decided on for her second birth. Initially Lara was hoping for a homebirth but made the decision that a hospital birth would be best for her circumstances and set about creating a positive environment in hospital. We do discuss birth trauma, coercion and lack of consent so just a content warning that if you find these topics hard to listen to you may want to skip this episode. You can connect with Lara at her instagram @larajezeph and her podcast 'Real Talk for Mums'. Hey there! I'm so excited to share our personal experience with you today. We're going to dive into a topic that so many parents can relate to: the sleep journey. Let me tell you, it's been quite the adventure! As a mum, I know firsthand the struggles that come with broken sleep and tough nights. During those challenging times, hearing from other parents about their journeys can be incredibly powerful. It's not always about seeking advice or finding a quick fix; it's about knowing that we're not alone and that this phase will pass. I hope that by sharing our story, I can provide support, solidarity, and reassurance to all you amazing parents out there. For me, I found understanding and responding to a his individual sleep needs and cues to be a better fit than adhering to rigid sleep training methods. Even the so called 'gentle sleep support' didn't sit well with me. I chat through the realities of having a baby with low sleep needs, and what I do to get through the day after a tough night. I hope this episode provides some solidarity and support to those of you who may also have a wakeful little one!Links from this episode:BASIS website on baby sleep - https://www.basisonline.org.uk/BASIS side car cots - https://www.basisonline.org.uk/side-car-cribs-bedside-cots-and-co-sleepers/Helen Ball Podcast - https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/an-interview-with-prof-helen-ball-sids-bed/id1523178579?i=1000599283001James McKenna - Safe Infant Sleep (excellent book!) In today's episode we're delving into an essential topic for women's health – pelvic floor health and perineal massageOur guest, Kath Baquie is a mum of 3 young girls, a physiotherapist for women, and she also has an online community, FitNest Mama. Inside FitNest Mama, she helps to provide pregnant and new mothers with the exercises, support & resources they need to move from the overwhelm, the physical aches & pains of pregnancy, or the weakness felt before and after birth. And instead, she helps to replace that with the comfort & confidence they need to feel strong again inside out, so that they can get back to doing what they love, with a bubba by their side (whether or not that's running around with the kids at the park, or running the next marathon). In today's episode, Kath will guide us through the importance of being proactive about pelvic floor health, emphasizing prevention as being key. We'll also explore the benefits of exercise during pregnancy for a smoother postpartum recovery journey. We also dive into the benefits of perineal massage from a physio perspective. This episode is packed with knowledge and practical advice and I cant wait for you to listen! Click here to join my Online Hypnobirthing with Hannah Course or you can also check out my group classes here* This week's episode was sparked from a conversation that I had in my hypnobirthing course this week - can I change my care provider during pregnancy? And if so, how do I go about it? It can often feel like we are 'locked into' our care provider, but you actually can change to another provider at anytime if you're not feeling like your current midwife, obstetrician or doctor is a good fit. It's can be challenging to navigate which is why I've outlined all the steps in this episode. I also chat about some of the signs that your provider might not be that supportive of physiological birth, and when you might want to consider changing. Click here to join my Online Hypnobirthing with Hannah Course or you can also check out my group classes here* In today's episode I chat about three important ways to prepare for a physiological birth. The term physiological birth refers to a birth with no medical intervention - I use this term instead of a 'natural' birth as I feel it is a better fit. Every birth is unique and we can never guarantee exactly how our birth will go - but by preparing beforehand you can increase your chance of having a positive and empowering birth.I would love to hear your thoughts, questions, and ideas for future episodes so please get in touch on instagram - my insta is @hannahwillsmoremidwife or through my website www.hannahwillsmore.com. It's World Breastfeeding Week 2023 and this years theme, 'Enabling breastfeeding – making a difference for working parents', highlights the importance of breastfeeding-friendly environments for women who are navigating their transition back to work. This theme also considers the role of paid leave and other workplace resources in empowering breastfeeding women who want to continue their journey once they return to work. As a passionate midwife and lactation consultant, I often guide my clients through tailored 'returning to work' sessions, understanding the overwhelming nature of this phase. However, rest assured, it doesn't have to be an unachievable challenge. Just like the early days of breastfeeding, once you find your rhythm, it becomes much easier. When planning this episode, I reflected on what would have been helpful knowledge for me personally and listened to the feedback of my clients. The recurring theme that emerged was the importance of flexibility, experimentation, and finding the best approach that works for your unique family dynamics. In today's episode I share practical tips and advice around navigating this transition - including equipment needed for pumping at work, whether you even need to pump while at work, way's to give your little one expressed breast milk, how this may look at different ages and my experience returning to part time work when my little one was 5.5 months old. I know firsthand the incredible dedication and hard work that goes into being a mum. That's why, when discussing the concept of "paid work," I want to acknowledge that every mother's role is invaluable and deserving of recognition. We are all working - whether that is within the home or paid work. Whether you are preparing to return to your career or simply seeking some well-deserved time away from your little one - perhaps for a special event like a wedding or a chance for some self care with a massage - the information in this episode is applicable to all mothers. My Online Hypnobirthing with Hannah Course is now available! This week is Birth Trauma Awareness Week. One in three women will describe their birth as traumatic, and one in ten will experience postpartum PTSD following childbirth. These numbers really sadden me. I don't believe that we can guarantee all women wont experience trauma during their birth, but these numbers are far, far too high. In this episode I am shining a light on birth trauma, and aim to share options for support and healing. As I mentioned I am absolutely not an expert in birth trauma, however there are many people adn services who are and who are able to support you. Please feel free to reach out via email or instagram if you would like recommendations in your local area. The book that I recommended is How to Heal a Bad Birth: Making sense, making peace and moving on by Melissa Bruijn and Debby Gould. If this episode has brought up negative or concerning feelings surrounding your birth please get in touch with your GP or the PANDA Helpline 1300 733 606. In today's episode I have a special guest joining me to chat about all things matrescence which I am very excited about. The topic of matrescence is so fascinating, and having gone through my own matrescence journey recently becoming a mum I really wanted to delve into this more. And don't worry if you haven't heard the term matrescence before - we chat all about what exactly it means in today's episode. In this episode I interview the lovely Kirstie Maddocks - Kirstie is a Midwife, Nurse, Doula, Intuitive Motherhood Mentor & Mum herself. Her specialty & passion is supporting Mothers to transition into motherhood with intention, through a variety of supports and programs to allow a woman to feel safe & confident as she unravels and explores motherhood. I have followed Kirstie's work for years, but we connected in real life when I attended a mothers group that she facilitated when I was four months postpartum (which was honestly the best thing!). In this episode we cover exactly what matrescence is and why this transition is so important to know about, how we can prepare for matrescence during pregnancy, and Kirstie also shares her top three strategies for embracing matrescence for mamas who are currently in the thick of postpartum. You can find more about how to work with Kirstie at her website and can also check out her instagram kirstie_maddocks_mama_mentorYou can check out all the info on our Postnatal Midwifery Packages here. In today's episode I share all about the highs and lows of our breastfeeding journey over the first six weeks. As a Lactation Consultant I had an extensive knowledge base going into my own breastfeeding journey which was invaluable, but also having consistent support and advice from our private midwife meant that I could switch off my 'midwife hat' a little to focus on being a mama. In this ep I discuss the preparation I did to get our breastfeeding journey off to a good start, but also how we overcame the challenges we faced.
