Do you ever wonder if there are better days and times to handle the trickier milestones in your career? The best day to apply for a job: Tuesday. SmartRecruiters, examined 270,000 job postings. Tuesday is the most popular day for companies to post those listings. If you are are in that first batch of resumes, chances are you are getting a fresh set of eyes. Best day to ask for a raise: Friday. Your boss is in a better mood, more relaxed. Make sure the meeting, though, is scheduled before 2:30pm. Best day to ask for promotion: Monday. This is more for your benefit than theirs. You need the weekend to prepare, rest, and strategize. Best day to resign: Friday. Giving two weeks notice? Put that notice in on a Friday, and two weeks later, that Friday is your last day. Best day to admit you’ve made a mistake: Wednesday. One of the toughest things to do! You’ve got to go in, and admit you screwed up. If it’s not an emergency, do it on a Wednesday. The boss is less stressed, and you still have Thursday and Friday to work together to find a solution. I’m Cheryl Casone with the FOX Business Network. The average job posting leads to 250 resumes. So yours really has to stand out from the pile. Tom Gimbel, CEO of the staffing agency LaSalle Network says one surefire way to sabotage your chances is to have a goofy-sounding email address. (Gimbel) “People are using their personal fun, cute emails. And they need to get one that’s professional. First name, last name, at a standard domain. Make it simple, make it easy.” Another common resume mistake, says Gimbel… Using abbreviations to save space. (Gimbel) “Don’t abbreviate, use real words, let’s be adults here.” Here’s what you should have on your resume… (Gimbel) “What your computer skills are, what you’ve actually accomplished, certain projects you took on, software packages that you’re a master at.” And if you’re a recent college grad, your education, put it up high. (Gimbel) “When you get over that 10 year period, you may want to put it at the bottom, but advertise it. If you have a degree, especially a masters, put it up front.” For more resume do’s and don’t’s go to casoneexchange.com. I’m Cheryl Casone with the FOX Business Network for FOX News Radio. Here’s some career advice for interns. FOX Business Network’s Cheryl Casone reports in this edition of “Hired!”: Getting you Hired! Five ways to turn that internship into a job. I’m Cheryl Casone with the FOX Business Network. Interns should request a formal appointment with their supervisor. This is the time to figure out what skills you need to work at this company, and also to talk about future career plans. Impress them now. Ask for a written recommendation that you can keep. If the internship company isn’t hiring, give them a detailed list of what you’ve done this summer, and make sure they put it on letterhead in digital or paper format. Send thank you notes. We know the younger generation doesn’t hand write notes anymore, so be unique, and send them a hand-written thank you on paper. Write a list of internship accomplishments and skills learned. Update that resume ASAP because you never know when a connection at your current company can lead to another company’s doorstep. Finally, stay in touch. Your supervisor, fellow interns, and anyone that is a decision making individual at that company. A job may not be open now, but it could open tomorrow! If you want to come across well at work — make sure you are properly interacting with others. FOX Business Network’s Cheryl Casone has some tips in this week’s “Hired”: Getting you Hired! I’m Cheryl Casone with the FOX Business Network. When it comes to body language at the office, you may be making some big mistakes that could cost you that promotion or hurt your reputation. Don’t touch your co-workers, even if it’s on the back of the arm or shoulder. Many of your colleagues are not comfortable with even innocent gestures. Be careful. Don’t avoid eye contact. Lack of it implies deception, and it can also point to insecurity or lack of confidence. Authority and confidence are traits you will communicate if you hold eye contact 50% of the time. Don’t have a bad handshake. You’re going to get instant credibility with a strong firm palm to palm handshake. Be careful of the dead fish handshake, and you don’t want to be to strong, as that comes across as a bully stance. Don’t tilt your head while listening to others. For women especially, you think you are expressing interest, but you actually come across as if you don’t understand what’s going on. Don’t forget about posture! Leaning back looks lazy, leaning forward looks aggressive. For more on all of this, go to casoneexchange.com. I’m Cheryl Casone with the FOX Business Network for FOX News Radio. If you want a new job — you’re going to need a good resume. Time to take it out and polish it up! FOX Business Network’s Cheryl Casone has some resume tips in this edition of “Hired!”: Getting you Hired! Resume Do’s and Don’ts. I’m Cheryl Casone with the FOX Business Network. Six seconds– that’s all you have. Six seconds, is the average time a potential employer spends looking at your resume. So the way your resume is laid out, makes a big difference. Advice from Tom Gimbel, CEO of the staffing agency LaSalle Network: (Gimbel) “You don’t want to do paragraph format. You want to do bullets. Crisp, sharp– it’s more appealing to the eye and it makes the key things that you accomplish stand out.” But don’t stand out too much! Gimbel says some job seekers actually put artwork on their resumes. Don’t do that. (Gimbel) “You get a lot of people who want to be creative. They want to stand out and they’ll have crazy fonts, they’ll have, it looks like stationary– like they’re writing a thank you note. You want to keep this thing professional, Cheryl.” And be professional on your social media too. Surveys indicate that 68% of employers will find you on Facebook. So get rid of those embarrassing posts and photos. For more Resume Do’s and Don’ts go to casoneexchange.com. I’m Cheryl Casone with the FOX Business Network for FOX News Radio. This week our look at the job market focuses on internships. FOX Business Network’s Cheryl Casone reports in “Hired!”: Getting you “Hired”! I’m Cheryl Casone with the FOX Business Network. There are an estimated 1.5 million internships presented each year, and at least one million undergrads will take an internship. Here are some internship do’s and don’t’s to get you eventually hired. Don’t complain! It’s okay if you don’t like the internship, but only let close family and friends know. You may get coffee and make copies all day, but you will need that reference at some point. It’s all about the resume. Don’t dress down or inappropriately. Your first impression has a lot to do with your clothes. It’s better to overdress than under-dress. Don’t say no! Hopefully at the end of the internship, you’re gonna get hired, but you have to stand out, and that means going the extra mile. Take any and all extra work opportunities. Finally, don’t forget your phone etiquette. Twenty-somethings don’t know what life was like without mobile devices and computers. Business gets done over the phone. Make sure you not only answer the phone, but get all the information needed for your boss or superior, they will appreciate your thoroughness. For more, go to casoneexchange.com.
