Teaching the why behind the how is crucial in our business. Anyone can learn to break a window. We need our people to know why we break windows so they'll know when to do it. More importantly, they'll know when not to. The same goes for search. We HAVE to occupy the interior to conduct searches. When we understand the fire ground and why we do things; we can operate safely in unsafe environments to affect positive outcomes. When we do not understand, we equate safety with complete risk aversion... a mindset our victims can't afford for us to have. Tyler Prater is a member of ST. louis Fire department. The manufacture, transport, or use of some form of HAZMAT substance occurs in virtually every community. Not every department has the capability of having #hazmattechnicians and equipment at the ready. However, there are certain things nearly any firefighter has access to and can do when initially called for a HAZMAT incident. These are the basics of HAZMAT. In this week's episode Johnny Jobtlks brings on Chiefs Ed and Mike Carroll to discuss the 95' LODD of Stoughton Fireman Victor Melendy. Near and dear to the hearts of everyone, we discuss how Victors ultimate sacrifice became a driving force for change in the entirety of the organization, and the stark contrast from where we were then, to where we are now. In the Fire Service, it often takes a tragedy for change to come about. In preparation for this episode and looking back through the studies from this tragedy I was able to learn about the history and lineage of the Stoughton Fire Department. Fortunately for me and the men and women I have gotten hired with, we have benefitted tremendously from the hard work that has come before us, and I was happy to be able to really learn from, and about the past. “You can't really know where you are going, until you know where you have been.” Keeping this message present in my head, we hope to encourage others to look back and see all of the “Why's” of their departments, and take a proactive stance instead of a reactive one. Chief Mike Carrol adds to the JobTlks book shelf with a very good recommendation of the book “Find Your Why” by Simon Sinek. This book is not specific for Fire Fighters, but is an invaluable resource on how to restructure your own life or the culture of an organization, which is the main goal of the Jobtlks Podcast. Chief Carrol explains his take on this book and how it has shaped his philosophy and his plans for the future of Stoughton Fire Department. As always, Thank you for your continued support. For this episode, Will and Barrey sat down with Captain Lisa Hamill do discuss the operational realities of limited and combination staffing departments. Capt Hamill starts off by talking about her journey through the ranks with MFD. She then goes on to talk about the challenges of running a limited and combination staffed department. One specific challenge we discussed is having career and call firefighters work and blend as one cohesive unit and not see each other as separate entities. We go on to discuss some of the operational challenges unique to Monson. After the interview, Capt. Hamill takes us on a station and apparatus tour showing us some of the apparatus design that helps them accomplish the mission despite limited staffing. Filming this episode and talking with Capt. In this week's episode, we talk with recently retired Deputy Chief Joe Marchetti of the Brockton Fire department about his career and the importance of taking time to care about ourselves as first responders. Joe points out the importance of early detection of cancer and other diseases, and how it impacts our survivability so we can enjoy a healthy retirement. We take time to discuss how Joe is taking action against cancer, and he demonstrates what a true leader in our industry looks like by going beyond his retirement in partnership with #detectogether to continue to advocate for Firefighters across the country, truly leaving the fire service better than he found it. We dive right into his presentation about early detection, and what we can do to help ensure that we are taking the steps to take care of ourselves. Joe has an incredible story of his late friend and local legend Joey Marano, and the “Story of Two Joeys.” He also takes time to talk about his friend, senior man, and mentor Ray Roberts who left us all with a very simple message - “Get your shit checked.” #Repsonsetimematters.org is going nationwide with the help of some industry staples with the likes of #JasonPatton, a guy who is raising awareness for all things health in the Fire Industry. We talk about how Joe played a major role in building a presentation and campaign by treating our self checks like “size ups”, and using common terminology that we use everyday in the fire service to better communicate how important this mission is to all of us. We mention Jim Coghlin, founder of #detectogether and how incredible it is to find that we have people in our community who are taking their time, money, and effort to have our backs and look out for our health and wellness in return for our service to them. We mention another invaluable resource and friend to the fire service, Dr. Christine Kannler and how the passing of her brother from job related cancer motivated her to do everything in her power to advocate for us, including driving across the state of MA and doing free skin checks to aid in our early detection of Cancer. Finally Joe gives us a fantastic book recommendation for the #Jobtlks book bookshelf, Killer Show, by John Barylick, that highlights the importance of fire prevention and how we must be diligent in our efforts and continue to keep our communities safe. All 5 generations have been shaped by significant events occurring in their lives. These events give people different perspectives on life. They effect the things we find important to give and to take from our employers and careers. Not everyone fits exactly into one box or identifies with a single generation. However, we know generational gaps exist. As employees of the fire service, we work in #nofail environments. We cannot ;et these gaps divide us. From here, the JobTlks team briefly highlights the service and background of Will & Barrey, who share the common bond of being Army Paratroopers. As the team dives into the episode, many veteran-related topics are discussed, such as highlighting what makes veterans well suited for a career in the fire service, working to maintain a positive perception of military service members as “ambassadors” of military service and continuing to exhibit many of the positive attributes of military service such as exhibiting a no-fail attitude and upholding core organizational and fire service values: discipline, honor, courage. In addition to discussing these important topics, the JobTlks team wraps up the day by discussing the importance of ensuring service members set themselves up for a successful transition from military service, regardless of occupational aspiration. The team highlights the importance of understanding that while the transition from military life to the civilian sector can be daunting, it can also be an incredible opportunity to succeed. One of the best ways to ensure a successful transition is to ensure you have a plan. The fire service offers many of the benefits that service members feel the military provided them: camaraderie, a sense of fulfillment and passion, structure, and of course, some excitement! In this week's episode, we start with a #fireservice shout-out. This shoutout is different in that it is a local shoutout to one of the mentors of the #JobTlks team. Barrey takes the time to offer thanks to a member of the Cambridge Fire Department, Division 2 Aide Rich Rycroft. Barrey highlights an incident at work in which FF Rycroft took the time to share his knowledge and invest in younger members, sharing his operational experience and insight. Seasoned firefighters such as FF Rycroft represent the best aspects of fire service culture: enthusiasm, positivity, a willingness to invest in junior members, and always striving to leave the job a better place. From here, the JobTlks team dives into the concept of #fitness in the fire service. At the beginning of the episode, Barrey opens by defining just what exactly it means to be fit for duty, noting that in many cases, it is multi-faceted: physical, mental, and emotional, and that for many members, the definition can vary. From here, the team offers their personal definitions of fitness, thoughts on the journey to maintain operational readiness and health, and discusses why maintaining a strong foundation is critical to a healthy and fulfilling career as well as retirement. As the conversation progresses, the team discusses topics such as the growing trend of functional fitness, the increasing emphasis on firefighter health and wellness, as well as the topic of mandatory physical fitness and wellness assessments. As the episode closes, the teams highlight the idea that no matter what you do, stay healthy, and get moving to ensure members not only enjoy a fulfilling career but a long and healthy retirement. The JobTlks team discusses what is means to have SCBA confidence, and that beyond being technically and tactically competent with the tool members must be mentally prepared to use SCBA's under extreme exertion. The JobTlks team highlights tools and techniques to not only master the physical but the mental game of SCBA use, such as use in confined spaces and under significant workload. The team further discusses the concept of ROAM (Rules of Air Management) and how to potential conserve air in a #mayday event. After wrapping up the discussion on SCBA confidence the team transitions to breaking down a firefighter #tactics video and provides real time analysis and feedback on a first due response. This review is not to provide critique to any agency, but to highlight the different means, tactics, and techniques used by agencies nationwide. As always, Thank you for your continued support. Welcome Back to another JobTlks Podcast. On this episode of JobTlks, the crew discusses #selfrescue and #bailout. To start off the episode we give a moment of silence for #firefighter Joshua Haynes from Linn County Fire in Kansas. FF Haynes Sustained injuries fighting a fire at a medical complex on June 20th, 2022 and dies as a result of those injuries. He was 35 years old and leaved behind a wife and 3 children. Our thoughts are with both his family and his fire family. Getting into the main content of the episode, Will plays a clip from a video where you get to see a firefighter bail out of building only seconds before the space had been in has a #flashover. You can view the full video here: https://youtu.be/kLn_XQsNXCg After the video, Will talks about #projectmayday. Project MAYDAY analyzed files from over 3,000 #fires where a #MAYDAY was called. What they found was there were 16 phrases in radio calls that preceded a MAY a majority of the time. You can view all the statistics collected by visiting www.projectmayday.net After discussing some of the data gathered by Project MAYDAY, the crew has an open discussion on self rescue and what it means to them individually. They give their thoughts and opinions on self rescue including prevention, recognition, and bailout. Once the discussion shifts to bail out, they play a video from the #FDNY “Black Sunday” fire, where Jeff Cool was interviewed. You can watch the full video and interview here: https://youtu.be/EvxtBC2gQ1g where they discuss the events from January 23rd, 2005 where 6 FDNY Firefighters were forced to make the decision to jump from a burning building. Will then discusses the bailout kit he uses made by #sterling; and why he likes his particular set-up. If you want to look at this specific kit, you can find it here: https://sterlingrope.com/store/work/kits-and-systems/fire-escape-systems/fcx-escape-systems The crew discusses some alternate techniques for getting out of tough situations in a burning building when below grade. In a slight change of pace, the crew #reacts to a #helmetcam video of a fire. The video shows an aggressive fire company go interior on a well involved #structure fire. The crew point out several things they notice during the fire after reviewing the Project MAYDAY data. Towards the end of the video a Firefighter calls a MAYDAY and has to be assisted by the crew operating near him. Welcome back to JobTlks for Episode 15! This episode is all about the LEAST controversial topic in the #firehouse: #EMS. Just kidding, we know this topic is the culprit of many a heated debate, but it doesn't have to be. As always, the JobTlks team dives into the issues we feel are relevant, important, and of conversation in the fire service from a positive lens. So why is Barrey wearing a bullet proof vest? Because were talking EMS in the Fire Service! The episode starts with the classic video known as the Engineer Gets Overtime, which can be accessed here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qTCFMwcmgOo&t=2s This servies to lighten the mood and ensure everyone knows, it's really not that serious and we can sit down and have a conversation about complex issues without it devolving into something counterproductive. While acknowledging the potential for heated debate, the JobTlks team attempts to dive into why EMS has become such a divisive issue and asks the question: what is the role of EMS in the fire service? What are some of the positive aspects of incorporating this capability in your agency? And, if implemented poorly, what are some of the potential drawbacks? The team examines the role of EMS in a changing fire service as previously highlighted in Episode 13 on All Hazards Agencies. The team dives into the root causes of tension, the importance and historical precedent of EMS in the Fire Service, and perhaps what the future entails. Discussing various system design, the team highlights the sheer variability and uniqueness that can be seen from system to system, noting that there is no perfect system, but there is one that will likely work best for each individual agency. Does Barrey make it to the end of the episode safely with his bullet proof vest intact? Tune in to find out!
