Lots to digest after a sloppy 2-1 win in Chicago. Only 15 SOGs in a poor effort largely saved by Stuart Skinner and the continued success of the PK. Is a win a win in any circumstance or should this one be cause for concern? Goal reviews and non-reviews and how long they take also a major topic of conversation.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Welcome to Episode 13! In this episode the JobTlks team dives into the concept of being an all #hazards agency and what that means for the future of the #fire #service. The team starts off the conversation by highlighting a promotional video from San Bernadino County Fire Department which can be accessed here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Y2e3zcnzexM This promotional clip does an excellent job of both illustrating and communicating exactly being an all-hazards agency entail. From there the conversation centers around what exactly being an All Hazards Agency means, and discussing both the significant change, as well as the significant opportunities that arise from no longer “just putting out fires”. The Team unpacks the term, discussing the litany of different roles undertaken in the modern fire service such as #firefighting #hazmat #technical-rescue #dive-rescue, #EMS #rope-rescue #marine-units and much more. The conversation continues and highlights the notion that just because an agency is striving to provide an all-hazards capability, doesn't mean that the have to use all of the budget, noting that an effective all hazards approach consists not of planning for every conceivable outcome, but planning for the most likely ones given your operational reality, and have a strong base of knowledge to act through the use of SOGs & SOPs and the use of regional assets when necessary. The JobTlks team uses the all hazards episode to highlight upcoming episodes on specialty teams and topics, which have come to play a prominent role in the daily operations of most agencies. That's all for this weeks episode! As always like, subscribe, and most important get involved in the coversation! JobTlks out!
JobTlks Podcast is an emerging effort to have a positive influence on Firehouse culture and fireground tactics. In episode 8 the JobTlks crew discusses all things water supply. While not the most riveting topic, it is one of the most important and is critical to determining success or failure on the fireground. The team starts with a brief intro video to highlight the incredible broad depth of operational realities (as discussed in a previous episode) that can dictate the highly individualized approach to establishing water supply. The video can be accessed here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aiNfICuBUrI&t=7 From there the team engages in an open discussion regarding the critical nature of water supply and discusses why rapidly establishing water supply is the single most indispensable asset to successful operations on the fireground. The team's discussion centers around highlighting the immense variability in department approach to water supply considering factors such as staffing, civil infrastructure (water sources), apparatus design, geography, and even climate. The team then focuses on the idea that water supply is a tactical decision with strategic implications and unpacking the various department SOPs & SOGs that inform actions, with topics such as 1st-due companies laying in, reverse lays, securing your own water supply vs second or third due, tanker shuttles, drafting and much more. Free-flowing conversation occurs regarding these ideas and how pre-planning, teamwork, and adaptability lead to success on the fireground. The teams ends with the all-important question of the day. Who's side will you be on? This wraps up Episode 8 for the JobTlks team. The team signs off with the usual: we are user-driven and hope to positively influence the conversation on culture, tactics, and all that makes the fire service “the best job you'll ever have.”

We go onto talk about some hands on Auto X training and some upcoming Live Fire and Car Fire / Dumpster Fire training. WHO WE ARE As a group of Rural Volunteer Firefighters, our Fire Department has built our firefighter training from both old and new tactics in the fire service and adapted them to fit the realities of equipment, manpower, and costs around what our community requires. WHAT WE DO We create video, audio and written word content to share these training and tactics methods with our Brothers and Sisters in our extended fire families, and to showcase to those that may be interested in becoming firefighters the fun you can have and the amazing skills and abilities you get to learn, whilst keeping the lives of the people around you safe! WHY WE SHARE Firefighters are problem solvers whose role requires them to be on their best day whilst others are having their worst day, and while we do not claim to be perfect we are willing to put our lives on the line to try. It's during the trying that we continue to develop the mindset, tactics, and training that allow us to be effective, safe and successful where it's needed the most, and by sharing our experiences we hope that it may help other Fire Departments in creating what works for them to help bring everyone home safe. We've been talking over the past few weeks on this show about whether firefighters have become too risk-averse. But there are also some department cultures that condone overly risky behavior. It's not in the SOPs or SOGs – culture is an unwritten feeling or understanding of what firefighters expect to do. How do we balance safety with being aggressive firefighters?Scott's guest to discuss this is J. Travis Carricato. Support this podcast
Oftentimes employee training involves scenarios where workers learn how to perform to the scripted standards. On the surface, there’s nothing wrong with that. However, the employee training scenarios are often developed to ensure the outcome of the training will be success. And, as many workers know, the complexity of many work issues can often require actions that are not consistent with the Standards. In other words, workers must veer from the written standard and be resilient problem solvers. Sogs Of Christmas Part 3 by Grace Media
On this episode, I interview Firefighter Richard Marcus of the New Hartford Volunteer Fire Department in Connecticut. On May 5, 2006, Firefighter Marcus was in the officer’s seat of New Hartford Engine 1 responding to a report of a fire on the roadside. While in route, they were cancelled and a discussion in the cab caused the driver to become momentarily distracted. For the brief moment that he had his eyes off the roadway, the engine drifted of the right side of the road. While the driver attempted to correct and recover, the engine veered out of control and struck a tree on the officer’s side of the engine. As a result, Firefighter Marcus suffered multiple injuries that included a spinal fracture and bilateral knee injuries. All firefighters riding in the engine were wearing seat belts. However the engine was older and was only equipped with lap belts, not shoulder belts. Listen in as Firefighter Marcus shares this incredible story of how this incident impacted his life. Lessons learned include: 1.The adoption of commercial driver’s license (or Q-endorsements in Connecticut) for drivers. 2.The implementation of a sterile cockpit policy (adopted from the airline industry). This is a topic I speak about in the SAMatters Online Academy and during the live Fifty Ways to Kill a First Responder program. I will talk about this more in an upcoming podcast. 3.Changes the department made in vehicle safety following the incident. 4.The establishment of a driver’s training program with criteria to accomplishment. 5.Richard shares how the accident changed how he was treated in his department. 6.The challenges Richard has seen in his efforts to get his department to develop SOGs and to implement best practices.
