Close your eyes and imagine a wilderness four times bigger than Yellowstone National Park. Imagine a landscape north of the Arctic Circle with rugged mountains, vast expanses of treeless tundra, glaciated valleys, forests and many rivers and lakes. In the winter the weather can dip below -50 degrees Fahrenheit and in the month of June the sun is out for 24 hours. This vast and expansive landscape is the home of Gates Of The Arctic National Park & Preserve, where this episode hears from its superintendent, Mark Dowdle. The sheer remoteness of Gates Of The Arctic, located in Northern Alaska, creates unique management experiences that Mark shares with us, including the mining road debate and the unique Search & Rescue setup given there are no trails or NPS sites within the park boundaries. In this episode, be enchanted by the grandeur of Alaska and learn about a national park you maybe haven't heard of.Sponsors:Go to ritualchocolate.com & use code WRTP to get 10% off any online purchase. Samantha Meyrick (Director of IPSS Search & Rescue) and Keith Muller (IPSS Search & Rescue Volunteer) join Mike Charles to give an update on the planned fundraising drive to secure a much-needed Search & Rescue police dog for Umhlali SAPS. After 10 years of service at the side for SAPS Warrant Officer Clinton Odayar, it has come time for legendary police dog K9 Dante's well-deserved retirement… K9 Dante has served the North Coast of KZN with distinction, bringing family members home safely, as well as bringing closure to many families who have lost loved ones in incidents ranging from drownings to natural disasters. As this K9 hero steps back, he leaves behind a void at Umhlali SAPS, and without a specially trained working dog such as Dante, the police service's search & rescue abilities on the KZN North Coast will be severely hampered. Luckily, a new replacement has been identified from a private K9 training facility in Pietermaritzburg, and it is hoped that K9 Zeus - Dante's planned replacement - will be joining W/O Clinton Odayar before month's end. At 2 years old, K9 is fully trained to perform the same function as K9 Dante. He will join a SAPS K9 Search & Rescue training program in February and will be an active SAPS K9 Search & Rescue member within 2 months. However, the cost of securing a trained K9 like Zeus has been set at R60 000 (an already reduced rate). As a private NPO operating in the rescue space, IPSS Search & Rescue (SAR) is hoping to galvanise community support through a crowdfunding “telethon” drive on Ballito's Radio Life & Style on Wednesday the 24th of January 2023… This is a call to our community to assist us in raising the funds to secure K9 Zeus, who will be donated to Umhali SAPS K9 Search & Rescue through IPSS SAR NPO. Any Additional funds raised during the telethon drive will be used by IPSS SAR NPO to conduct essential training to IPSS SAR volunteers as well as upskilling SAPS Search & Rescue and Durban Metro Search & Rescue members. Stay tuned to Radio Life & Style on Wednesday for details on how to donate LIVE to the telethon (and challenge other individuals and businesses), or contribute towards the cause using the banking details below: IPSS MEDICAL SAR NPC STANDARD BANK 051001 A/C: 032380798 REF: NAME EMAIL: admin@ipss.co.za Radio Life & Style on Facebook · The Morning Show Sponsor: Excellerate Security

In this episode, we chat with Ashley Smith, a dedicated member of Lakes Region Search & Rescue. While Ashley's love for hiking started as a kid, the pandemic sparked a determination to conquer the New Hampshire 48 4,000-footers, with the majority of them being finished solo. Afterwards she had a desire to assist fellow hikers in challenging situations, obtaining certifications in wilderness first aid and first responder. Motivated by her own experiences in precarious trail situations, she joined the Lakes Region Search & Rescue team, a group of over 70 volunteers collaborating with Fish and Game to respond to incidents in the region. If you're curious about the intricacies of search and rescue missions or seeking valuable safety insights for your next trail adventure, this episode's for you! Standing waist deep in the Everglades amongst bellowing alligators, mesmerized at the end of the ice road by aurora borealis and a blanket of stars, and inspired by the opportunity to work for an agency with such an outstanding mission are just a few of the experiences Bob DeGross, Superintendent of Voyageurs National Park, invites us into in this episode -- you don't want to miss learning about his experiences across the park service and his unique insight into Voyageurs National Park. Bob shares how implementing wisdom from the Voyageurs (French-Canadian Fur Traders) & Ojibwe tribe can reduce Search & Rescue incidents within the park, reminds us that preservation is much less expensive than restoration and discusses the challenges with the “accomplishment mindset” folks have today. Voyageurs National Park is located in Northern Minnesota, boasting some of the park system's most scenic campsites, acclaimed as an international dark sky park and driven by the purpose of maintaining a viewshed, a landscape reminiscent to what the voyagers would have experiencedEpisode Specific Links: Feeling inspired? James 5:19-20
Sometimes you are lost, but you don't realize it. A few weeks ago while I was hiking Mount Elbert in Colorado, I heard a story about a hiker who became lost while climbing Elbert, but didn't realize he was lost. Here's what happened. This hiker started his journey by himself, right on schedule. However, he failed to return at the time he told his friends and family he would return. Naturally, his friends and family began to worry and contacted the Leadville Search & Rescue team to find him. One of the first things the S&R team did was call this hiker's cell phone. Unfortunately, every time they tried to call him, the hiker rejected their phone call! After numerous attempts, the S&R team sent out search parties hoping to locate the lost hiker. This search and rescue process went throughout the night, turning up no evidence of the lost hiker. Surprisingly, the next day, this lost hiker shows up at his camp...almost 24 hours late! When asked by the S&R team why he didn't answer their calls, the man replied, "I didn't recognize the phone numbers, so I declined them." The next day, the Search & Rescue team released this statement: If you ever find yourself lost, and an unknown number is calling you, please answer it. Some people don't even know they are lost. They are so oblivious to the reality of their location, they literally reject God's call. Why would they respond? In their minds, they don't need help because...they aren't lost. In Luke 15, Jesus must help a group of well meaning religious people understand that they are lost. The problem is, that even though Jesus tells them they are lost, they don't believe him. He even goes into great detail describing how much God wants to help lost people come home. Unfortunately, they decline his "phone call". What about you? Are you lost? Is God calling you, trying to get your attention? To learn more give a listen to this sermon podcast, we know that you will find it to be helpful.
