Kevin Harvey - Alaska born and raised, a Firefighter in the Interior of Alaska where temperatures range from triple digit highs in the summer to the rare but always bragged about temps -40F and below. Started in the fire service at North Star Volunteer Fire Department in 1987 and have held all positions from recruit to acting Fire Chief during my tenure. I spent some time in the United States Marine Corps 1989-1994 where I was hand picked to serve as a member of the Presidential Helicopter Squadron HMX-1 as a Crew Chief on the Presidents helicopters, serving Presidents Bush Sr. and Clinton. Traveling all over the world with the President made me realize that while I loved the job, I knew that I would return to Alaska when I was finished. While in the Corps I stayed active in the fire service by volunteering in Stafford County Fire at Company 2 working my way from firefighter to Engine Officer and then moving to the Truck working my way through all positions including Tillerman and ending at the Truck Captain position upon my departure for home. Upon returning to Alaska I enrolled in college to pursue a degree in Fire Science and with the hopes of landing a job in the fire service. I accepted an internship at North Star Fire Department which turned into a full time position. I left there in 1996 and made a shift to the DOD Fire Service and went to work at Ft Wainwright Fire and Emergency Services. Trying to decide on a career in municipal or the DOD fire service, I switched teams a couple times but settling in for the long haul in the DOD remaining in the Interior of Alaska. Practicing and honing the craft by teaching at conferences throughout Alaska, attending courses both in resident and local with the National Fire Academy in Emmitsburg Maryland, as a guest instructor for the University of Alaska Fire Science Program, State of Alaska Fire Service Training and with my local F.O.O.L.S. Chapter “Farthest North Fools” to which I am proud to say, a founding member. I hold certifications in Automotive repair from ASE, Airframe and Powerplant Certificate from the FAA, FFI,FFII, Apparatus Operator, Confine Space Rescue Technician, Hazmat Technician and Incident Commander, Health and Safety Officer, Incident Safety Officer, Alaska State EMT III, Fire Officer 4, Instructor 2, Inspector 2, Public Educator Instructor and Water on Wheels instructor. Fluent in both Western Canadian and Eastern Austrailian languages and one helluva guy. Proud father of Madison and Killian Harvey and husband to my Queen, my main support staff, my rock my wife Veronnica. Together, we host a class called Married to the Fire Service where we are lucky enough to help people associated with the fire service and firefighters gain a better understanding of the family aspect of the fire service.

How safe are you as a firefighter? Do you don all your gear before you make entry, or do you take a risk, thinking you may save someone else? What about something as simple as wearing your seatbelt? I know there's a certain faction of firefighters who long for the days of riding the tailboard. These are the guys who say it's possible to be too safe. But if you want to make sure you go home, and have a longer career, safety is the one key element. That's why my guest today wrote a comprehensive book on how to be safe. It's titled “Fire Officer's Guide to Occupational Safety & Health.” It's written by Chief Ronald Kanterman of the Wilton, Connecticut fire department. Ron has 40 years of service, having been both a volunteer and career firefighter. He's worked for the FDNY, as well as a Fortune 500 company's emergency services division. Ron's written books and dozens of articles and been on staff at FDIC. Support this podcast
Kevin is back for his first episode since returning from New York City. Sully is happy to have him back and the boys have a lot to talk about. Kevin starts off by bringing up his first days at Fort Totten, the FDNY base for Fire Officer training. The first night he got there, he got a look at his new "home" for a month, and met all of the people he would be in class with. He had guys from Albany, New Rochelle, Yonkers, North Tonawanda, Auburn, Glens Falls, Cohoes, Watervaliet, Westchester and Henrietta with him. Kevin said all the guys were great people and they're really what held the class together. They encountered some different times, because they didn't have an "RA" for about a week and a half, normally there are 2 assigned to the FLSTP's (First Line Supervisors Training Program) class. They got let out of class on multiple occasions much later than they were required, and a few more things. The guys leaned on each other a bit through humor (go figure), busting balls, and just relaxing and enjoying the experience. They took a few "field trips" to the Empire State Building, World Trade Center Memorial, Citi Field (Home of the Mets), Yankee Stadium, and FDNY Marine 1, the fire boat. They had dinner as a class at Lombardi's (Pizza) in downtown Manhattan, as well as, Toni DiNapoli's (Italian) in Times Square. For a normal dinner, there was a "chow hall" on the fort where they could eat for free. Every single meal had carrots in it.... which, made them decide to cook out for themselves one night. They had some drinks, played some corn hole and got to know each other more on that fun night. All in all, Kevin said it was a memorable experience that he was fortunate to be a part of. However, when asked if he would do it again, he replied back quickly... "Oh hell no."
What does it take to be a fire officer? There's more to it than just giving orders, of course. In fact, being a great officer could be considered a skill … or even an art. My guest today wrote a post for the Firefighter Nation website about the art of being a fire officer. Kirk Galatas is Interim Assistant Chief at the Mukilteo Fire Department in Washington state. He began his career as a firefighter with the US Air Force right out of high school and then worked as a volunteer firefighter. Support this podcast

Engine company riding assignments are the key to a ready arrival at a scene. They eliminate confusion. But some departments don't actually specify who's doing what, and my guest on this show says that's a mistake. Chad Menard is a Captain/Paramedic for a city fire department in Alabama. He's a graduate of the National Fire Academy's Managing Officer Program. He's a USAR rescue technician with Alabama Task Force 3, and a Level II State Certified Fire Instructor and Fire Officer. Dean S. Hawkins is a highly decorated Fire Officer & Trainer based in Cairns, Far North Queensland and is the author of the highly successful book Fight Fire with Fire – How to use firefighting techniques to find your purpose, overcome all obstacles and reach your goals. What can a Fire Officer and Trainer teach Small Business Owners about making more? Fire fighting and running a small business are very similar. You need to OUTWORK your doubts, OUTWORK your hesitations and OUTWORK your fears. These three things are your barriers to success, regardless of what you’re doing. When you’re learning to be a fire fighter there’s early starts and late finishes. Does this sound familiar to owning a small business? It’s about doing what is required to be successful. Success is all about preparation. In fire fighting you mitigate what could go wrong, and you take all the necessary training and precautions. You do the same in small business. “The heavy lifting is done prior to the event”. Only after you’ve done all the hard work, can you enjoy the rewards of your efforts, not beforehand. This is what separates people with a wish list and people with a want list. You’ve got to want it. Yoda: - Do, or do not, there is no try. When people say they will TRY it’s already a sign of giving up. When people say they will ‘try and attend an event’, you already know it means they won’t be there. This applies to all areas of life. Take the first few steps If you want to do something, prepare the night before. If you want to go walking get your shoes out and your clothes ready before you go to sleep. By having them ready you’ve got more chance of you doing it. If you actually put your shoes and walking gear on, Dean dares you not to walk. This applies to business: If you say you will TRY and increase profits by 20% it won’t happen. You either will or you won’t, there is no try. Saying I WILL automatically makes you think of all the processes that must happen for this to be a reality. Belief in what you do Personal trainers, Health Practitioners, Fire Fighters, you forfeit the right to not look after yourself. It’s your responsibility. When you wear your trade you take pride in what you do, but it’s not just a visual thing, it’s also how you perform each day. Do you perform to the highest level, or cut corners? Create a Contract for Success by asking yourself: Will you get up earlier to make it happen? Will you go to bed late to make it happen? Will you connect with all the authorities in your space? Will you read as much as you can, and get all the qualifications necessary? Will you stay on that commitment for the necessary amount of time required to make it a reality? Will you pour yourself completely into it for at least 90 days? You can do anything for 90-Days It’s not sustainable to pour yourself into something with a break, but you can do anything for 90-days, which is how long it took Dean to write his book. It’s a similar principle used in the book The 12-Week Year (4 x 90 day periods). Dean admits he’s never had a natural flare for anything, but he’s done well because he can’t be outworked. Working Less is Working Smart We spoke about earning more, now lets talk about working less. It sounds like a contradiction but it’s not, it’s about being smart Stick to a formula that works, but be prepared to make adjustments along the way and be open to new ideas. The more you get in the habit of following a good structure, the easier it is to repeat and get ongoing positive results. It’s like a Standard Operating Procedure. You need to learn to focus on what’s important today. When Dean was faced with a house fire that was the most important thing at that given moment, not the next fire, or anything else, it’s the one right in front of him. In business it’s the most important task that needs to be done next. Not the most exciting or most fun, it’s the most important. Keep your mind open Learn the art of being open to the influence of others, other professions, even if they don’t have the specific answer you’re looking for. You can modify it. You can even learn from a McDonalds ad. Yes they may be selling burgers and fries, but can you use part of their message in your own sales pitch? Look at other industries…see what you can learn – LOOK FOR THE CONNECTIONS ON HOW IT CAN BE APPLIED to your circumstances. If you’re looking for answers the universe will provide them, but if you’re not looking it will also meet those requirement as well. All the answers you’ll ever need in life and business are out there; you’ve just got to put it all together. It’s like huge jigsaw puzzle for life. You’ve got all the pieces to make a picture, but it’s disorganised; however you know what the end product looks like and you know the first few steps. Start with putting the edges together, and then work on the rest. Smart People Good operators are always walking around with a notebook in their hands. They’re ready to learn. They cut things out of magazines and they always go into meetings with an open mind. You can learn something from every person you meet. You need Switch Off Days You need to take time off from your work and really recharge the batteries. Top Up Moments Take 10 – 15 minutes a few times per day to reconnect with the universe. Go for a walk, or play with the dog. You may try to listen to the bird noises amongst the car noises and barking dogs. Stop and feel the breeze on your face. This is all part of having a mental break to top up your energy. You also need to top yourself up with good food, sensible exercise. Daily Routines We’re products of our daily actions and daily thoughts. If a dog barks and you get annoyed, you must ask yourself why? These things happen, so you’ve got to accept it. We are the average of the five people we hang around with the most – Jim Rohn. Dean suggests living by this quote. If you come across an angry person and their full of negative energy, you need to phone someone you know who’s positive to help offset and balance the energy in your day. Deans Mantra: Today I’m going to be EFFECTIVE, EFFICIENT, Safe and fit For Purpose. Can you say the same?
