On the version of Hot off the Wire posted Nov. 27 at 7:15 a.m. CT: TEL AVIV, Israel (AP) — Israel and Hamas appear open to extending a cease-fire in Gaza that has halted their deadliest and most destructive war but is set to expire after Monday. A fourth exchange of militant-held hostages for Palestinians imprisoned by Israel is planned for later in the day. Israel has said it would extend the cease-fire by one day for every 10 additional hostages released. Hamas has also said it hopes to extend the four-day truce. The cease-fire came into effect Friday after several weeks of indirect negotiations mediated by the United States, Qatar and Egypt. Police say a suspect has been arrested in the shooting of three young men of Palestinian descent who were attending a Thanksgiving holiday gathering near the University of Vermont campus. Police say the three were shot and injured Saturday night in Burlington. One of the men has suffered serious injuries and the others are in stable condition. Police Chief Jon Murad says a white man with a gun approached the trio, who were walking, and fired at least four rounds before fleeing. Murad says the shooting may have been a hate crime. Protests have been widespread and tensions have escalated in the U.S. as the death toll rises in the Israel-Hamas war. PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) — Oregon's largest school district says it has reached a tentative agreement with its teachers union and its roughly 45,000 students will be back in class on Monday after more than three weeks. The agreement must still be voted on by teachers who have been on the picket line since Nov. 1 over issues of pay, class sizes and planning time. It must also be approved by the school board. Portland Public Schools students missed 11 days of school before the district began its weeklong Thanksgiving break. As the strike dragged on, tensions rose and one school board member's rental property was vandalized. Consumers are scouring the internet for online deals as they begin to cap off the five-day post-Thanksgiving shopping bonanza with Cyber Monday. Even though e-commerce is now part and parcel of our everyday lives, Cyber Monday – a term coined back in 2005 by the National Retail Federation – continues to be the biggest online shopping day of the year. For several major retailers, the “Cyber Monday” sale is a days-long event that began over the weekend. Consumer spending for Cyber Week - the five major shopping days between Thanksgiving and Cyber Monday - provides a strong indication on how much shoppers are willing to spend during the holiday season. NEW YORK (AP) — The Walt Disney Co.'s “Wish” had been expected to rule the Thanksgiving weekend box office, but moviegoers instead feasted on leftovers, as “The Hunger Games: Songbirds and Snakes” led ticket sales for the second weekend, according to studio estimates Sunday. Neither of the weekend's top new releases — “Wish” and Ridley Scott's “Napoleon” — could keep up with Lionsgate's “Hunger Games” prequel. It led all films with $28.82 million over the weekend and $42 million over the five-day holiday frame. “Napoleon” outperformed expectations to take $32.5 million over the five-day weekend and an estimated $20.4 million Friday through Sunday. But “Wish” wobbled, coming in with $31.7 million over five days and $19.5 million Friday through Sunday. WASHINGTON (AP) — President Joe Biden will convene the first meeting of his supply chain resilience council. The Democratic president is using Monday's event to announce 30 actions to improve access to medicine and needed economic data and other programs tied to the production and shipment of goods. Biden's announcement comes after supply chain problems fueled higher inflation as the United States recovered from the coronavirus pandemic in 2021. Consumer prices are down from last year's peaks. But polling shows that inflation remains a political challenge for Biden going into the 2024 presidential election. Jalen Hurts continues his MVP push as the NFL game of the day needs overtime to decide the Eagles and Bills, Patrick Mahomes is on his game Sunday, the Pittsburgh Steelers find their offense on the road, Trevor Lawrence puts up some hefty numbers and so does Jason Tatum in the NBA. NEW YORK (AP) — Rep. George Santos says he expected to be expelled from Congress following a scathing report by the House Ethics Committee that found substantial evidence of lawbreaking by the New York Republican. The comments on Friday came during a three-hour conversation on X Spaces in which Santos lashed out at colleagues and described the committee's report as “slanderous.” House investigators say Santos used campaign funds for personal purposes and caused the campaign to file false or incomplete reports. Since the release of the report earlier this month, several members of Congress who previously voted against expelling Santos have publicly reversed themselves. On Friday, Santos said he has done the math on the votes and “it doesn't look really good.” NASHVILLE, Tenn. (AP) — Daryl Hall has sued his longtime music partner John Oates, arguing that his plan to sell off his share of a joint venture would violate a business agreement the duo had. The move quickly prompted a judge last week to temporarily block the sale during legal proceedings and arbitration. The lawsuit contends that in their roles as co-trustees, Oates and other defendants were moving to sell their part in Whole Oats Enterprises LLP to Primary Wave Music. The lawsuit says they were doing so without Hall's consent and in violation of their business agreement while arbitration hadn't been completed. A court order Wednesday released more details from the case. NEW YORK (AP) — Merriam-Webster's word of the year for 2023 is “authentic.” Editor at large Peter Sokolowski told The Associated Press ahead of Monday's announcement that lookups for the word rose to new heights on the company's website throughout the year. There are many reasons. It's an age of deepfakes and post-truth. The rise of artificial intelligence also contributed. So did talk of authentic cuisine, authentic voices and authentic selves. Sokolowski called 2023 a crisis year of authenticity. This year's pick follows “gaslighting” in 2022. Authentic marks the 20th anniversary of Merriam-Webster choosing words of the year. Among the runners-up for 2023 were deepfake, implode and kibbutz. —The Associated Press About this program Host Terry Lipshetz is a senior producer for Lee Enterprises. Andrew is the founder of LiveWell Health. He and his team are redefining aging utilizing individualized exercise to promote happier, healthier aging. His company offers in-home services for families and individuals wanting to live a greater quality of life by providing them the medicine of exercise to manage chronic conditions including, Parkinson's disease, cardiovascular disease, and various dementias. Andrew started Live Well after spending time in South Florida and noticing that the aging individual had been “written off” by healthcare professionals because they didn't meet the standards set forth by medicare. These individuals were either too functionally independent to receive maintenance care or a chronic illness disrupted typical medicare benefits. Andrew knew he could make an impact on this population. While completing his graduate degree in Gerontology from the USC he opened LiveWell Health in March of 2018. Link to bioRxiv paper: http://biorxiv.org/cgi/content/short/2023.05.05.539590v1?rss=1 Authors: Arafe, M., Bhagwat, N. P., Chatelain, Y., Dugre, M., Sokolowski, A., Wang, M., Xiao, Y., Sharp, M., Poline, J.-B., Glatard, T. Abstract: Background: The availability of reliable biomarkers of Parkinson's disease (PD)progression is critical to the understanding of the disease and development of treatment options. Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) provides a promising source of PD biomarkers, however, neuroimaging results have been shown to be markedly sensitive to analytical conditions and population sampling, which motivates investigations of their robustness. This study is part of a project to investigate the replicability of 11 structural MRI measures of PD identified in a recent review. Objective: This paper attempts to reproduce (similar data, similar analysis) and replicate (variations in data and analysis) the design of the machine learning (ML) model described in [1] to predict PD progression from T1-weighted MRIs. Methods: We used the Parkinson's Progression Markers Initiative dataset (PPMI, ppmi-info.org) used in [1] and we followed as closely as possible the original methods. We also investigated slight methodological variations in cohort selection, feature extraction, ML model design, and evaluation techniques. Results: The Area under the ROC Curve (AUC) achieved by our model closely reproducing the original study remained lower than 0.5. Across all tested models, we obtained a peak AUC of 0.685, which is better than chance performance but remained lower than the AUC value of 0.795 reported in [1]. Conclusion: We managed to train a model that predicts disease progression with a performance better than chance on a cohort extracted from the PPMI dataset, using methods adapted from [1]. However, the performance of this model remains substantially lower than the one reported in [1]. Our difficulties to reproduce or replicate the original work are likely explained by the relatively low sample size in the original study. We provide recommendations on how to improve the reproducibility of MRI-based ML models of PD in the future. Copy rights belong to original authors. FUENTE: NPR

I., Hashimoto-Torii, K., Jones, K. S., Corbin, J. G. Abstract: Olfaction is the primary sensory modality by which most vertebrate species interpret environmental cues for appropriate behavioral outputs. The olfactory system is subdivided into main (MOS) and accessory (AOS) components which process volatile and non-volatile cues. While much is known regarding the molecular diversity of neurons that comprise the MOS, less is known about the AOS. Here, focusing on the AOS which is largely comprised of the peripheral vomeronasal organ (VNO), the accessory olfactory bulb (AOB) and the medial subnucleus of the amygdala (MeA), we studied the molecular diversity and neuronal subtype connectivity of this interconnected circuit. We show that populations of neurons of the AOS can be molecularly subdivided based on their current or prior expression of the transcription factors Foxp2 or Dbx1. We show that the majority of AOB neurons that project directly to the MeA are of the Foxp2-lineage. Using single cell patch clamp electrophysiology, we further reveal that in addition to sex-specific differences across lineage, the relative contributions of excitatory and inhibitory inputs to MeA Foxp2-lineage neurons differ between sexes. Together, this work uncovers a novel molecular diversity of AOS neurons and lineage- and sex-differences in patterns of connectivity. Copy rights belong to original authors. The founder of LivWell Health talks about providing one-on-one fitness training in senior living communities and as a personal in-home wellness service. About Andrew Andrew has always been involved in the fitness world. His love for health and wellness led him to an undergraduate degree in Exercise Physiology at Bowling Green State University then to a graduate degree from one of the nation's top programs at the University of Southern California. The plan was to learn about the aging process and apply exercise principles to help senior populations live happier, healthier lives. LiveWell Health opened in 2018 and has grown to a team of eight, with greater expansion on the horizon. LiveWell Health creates and executes one-on-one exercise routines for those over the age of 65 from the comfort of their own homes. Many of the LiveWell members have completed therapy protocols and are looking for increased benefit. Others wish to avoid or delay some of the common issues of aging in order to remain independent. Key Takeaways The healthcare system makes it difficult to provide continuity. Spend more time with patients and our clients improves outcomes. Older adults want autonomy and purpose, to be challenged, motivated, and try new things. The biggest mistake made in senior living communities is treating residents as incapable.

We are thrilled to bring you our first episode in our spotlight series A Focus on Education with an interview with the dynamic advocate and supporter, Mary Sokolowski, Ph.D. from College Internship Program (CIP). The College Internship Program (CIP) is a private young adult transition program for individuals 18-26 with autism, ADHD, and other learning differences offering comprehensive and specialized services. Mary helps us kick off this series with a conversation about what people with learning challenges can and should have the opportunity to achieve. We talk about the article that Mary wrote a few years ago which is what prompted us to invite her to be on the show. Please join us as we head down this path of transition, college and beyond for people with disabilities. Mary gives some great takeaways and ideas for parents, families, and adults with disabilities on how to start to navigate through this period of uncertainty and change. We talk about how much learning is done outside of the classroom and how programs like CIP really “get” this about students with autism, ADHD and other learning challenges. We know that this episode is going to shine a little light on transition and bring important and compassionate information to families and self-advocates. We can't wait for you to listen! Before joining CIP in 2018, Mary worked for twenty years in the field of post-secondary education as an instructor and administrator. She served as adjunct faculty at several colleges and universities in the northeast. Mary also worked as Director of Federal Relations at SUNY-Binghamton and Director of Community and Government Relations at Salve Regina University. For the past two years, Mary has served as the Admissions Coordinator at CIP's Berkshire location. As she joins the National Team at CIP, Mary brings with her a passion for working with students with learning differences and a desire to communicate effectively with diverse individuals and groups.

Event planning can be a daunting task and knowing how to pull off a successful event can be even more difficult. What does someone need to start their own event to showcase their product or service and how do you start an event planning service? Essential questions are who are you going to target? What is going to be your startup cost? Who is going to run the operations and financials for the event? Lastly, you will need to know the marketing and resources available to get your event promoted. For many people, event planning is often left to the professionals. It takes a lot of work and can be overwhelming at times. An inexperienced planner will have all kinds of questions about the type of event, what kind of people are we targeting, and what are we going to talk about. Speakers, educators, promoters, sponsors, oh my! This can be exhausting just listing them; however, it isn't an impossible task for you. With the right planning and research, you can pull this off yourself and showcase your successful product or service. Target The Right Market Why is targeting so important? The target is important because it allows you to hone in on what might be the most prolific. You wouldn't invite techies to an event with no tech equipment. Decide whether or not it's going to be a corporate or social event. Knowing the type of event will keep people who might be interested in your product or service engaged and interested. Know Your Startup Cost Knowing your startup cost is important because it gives you some insight into how successful your event was and prepares you for some unexpected situations. Some things to consider are the venue rent, the equipment you will need, inventory of your product, licenses or taxes, communication, advertising and promotion, attorneys, and insurance. Operations Research is the best way to mitigate risk. It is important to do your homework. Consider the time you have to plan and know that the bigger the event, the more time you will need to plan. About SherrieAs a strategic event planner with 15-years of experience, I help clients realize their potential for success and create live events to grow their brand while bringing profit to their business that continues long after the event. In this time of great need, I realized I had an obligation to help as many businesses use this time wisely to strategize and plan an experience their industry will seek out first and attend. The starting point of my event planning career began with Bill Glazer and Glazer-Kennedy Insider's Circle™, as Bill's Executive Assistant, where I quickly took on the additional role of Event Manager and Planner. With the blessing of working side by side with Bill and listening to the top Marketing Experts on stage for over 7 years, I learned a lot of marketing tips, strategies, business planning and so much more. Through determination and hard work, I learned quickly what it took to run smooth, successful and profitable events to get where I am today as the owner SLS Event Planning and Consulting where I have helped over 50+ clients since 2012 create prosperous and effective live events that help grow their own businesses while building their brand.Sherrie SokolowskiSLS Event Planning and Consulting1144 Meachem DriveClarksville, TN 37042Phone and Text: 410-294-5404Skype: sherrie.sokolowski-slseventsFax: 717-641-0333www.slseventplanning.com Like us on Facebook Please Subscribe to My YouTube Channel ★ Support this podcast on Patreon ★

Peter Sokolowski, lexicographer at Merriam-Webster, fears we're currently having a crisis of meaning in our cultural understanding and use of words. How do we understand phrases like "fake news?" Does it mean news that has no relationship to reality or is it how President Trump refers to truth-based news he doesn't like? What is an "alternative fact?" How can the phrase "drug deal" be used to refer to an illegal business transaction -- or in its use by former National Security Advisor John Bolton, an illegal government transaction -- and as a smear against the Navy's former top civilian leader, Richard Spencer, for trying to uphold professional standards? How can we communicate with one another if we don't agree on the basic meaning of words? This is our full interview with Sokolowski. It's about half again as long as the version that aired in Episode 4 of Pardon Me. It has been lightly edited for clarity but not for time or content. Curator and art historian Thomas Sokolowski is no stranger to MOCRA audiences, having lectured at the museum in 1994 with a talk called "The Changing Face of AIDS" and again in 2002 with a talk called "The Last Impression: Andy Warhol's Art as Belief." In this interview, MOCRA Director Terrence Dempsey, SJ, and Sokolowski discuss issues related to art and AIDS. Topics include Sokolowski's experiences in presenting some of the earliest exhibitions of art about AIDS, and his role in the creation of the red ribbon for AIDS awareness. Also addressed are Sokolowski's role in introducing Dempsey to the late artist Adrian Kellard, and Sokolowski's significant role in making several MOCRA exhibitions possible. During the interview, several references are made to Sokolowski's 1994 talk at MOCRA. Be sure to listen to the Audio Extra, "The Changing Face of AIDS," which features excerpts from that lecture. Riding at night through streets deemed dangerous in Eastside Los Angeles, the Ovarian Psycos use their bicycles to confront the violence in their lives. At the helm of the crew is founder Xela de la X, a single mother and poet M.C. dedicated to recruiting an unapologetic, misfit crew of women of color. The film intimately chronicles Xela as she struggles to strike a balance between her activism and nine year old daughter Yoli; street artist Andi who is estranged from her family and journeys to become a leader within the crew; and bright eyed recruit Evie, who despite poverty, and the concerns of her protective Salvadoran mother, discovers a Kate and Joanna Picnewfound confidence. Co-directors Joanna Sokolowski & Kate Trumbull-LaValle stop by to talk about the boldness of Ovas’ politics, their brazen approach to feminism, and unapologetic aesthetic: a hybrid mix of Chicana, Riot Grrrl, Zapatista and militant-punk cultural markers and the individual personalities that make Ovarian Psycos such a compelling watch. This week we interviewed Julia Sokolowski. She left the game in episode 11 of Survivor Kaoh Rong. It was easy for some of us to overlook Julia in the beginning, and she benefited from an easy start by being on a winning tribe. But a short, solo trip to Brawn beach served as a wake up call, and then we were surprised and happy to see just how savvy she was at such a young age. We've never seen someone this young do so well. She set the bar very high for all future teenage castaways. Listen to this interview to hear which event devastated her the most, how her experience changed her, what she will be looking for at the final tribal council and lots more!
