Hi, My name is Carl Denne and I run and own a Hastings Kickboxing Academy, in Jan 2020, I started my own podcast channel, “Kickstart Your Confidence” after being inspired by other likeminded positive people. My aim for this podcast is to share and discuss real life topics, covering mental health, pressures and stresses of life, running and owning your own business, with other business owners and real life people who have walked the walk and lived to tell the tale, in hopes that you, yes you reading this right now, can relate and find guidance in some way.
Carl shares great advice on why you should say yes and get things done. Every day brings challenges and some people create their own barriers, they make a problem, ask yourself are you a problem solver or problem builder? If you learn to say ‘yes' you can be solution-focused and get things done Say ‘yes' and then work out how to get over or through the barrier if you want to get to your goals KEY TAKEAWAYS Things happen and you can create a problem yourself quite quickly Are you a yes person? Are you your own worst enemy? Are you the problem solver or the problem builder? It can be easier to not do something than find a solution When you have a hurdle or a problem stop and ask yourself are you the person who is looking for a solution to get it done There are hurdles and barriers every day you need to be solution-focused Say ‘yes' and then work out how to get it done If you can't do it find someone who can BEST MOMENTS ‘I see it over and over again where people don't look for a solution' ‘Stop saying ‘no', just say ‘yes' and find a way to get it done' VALUABLE RESOURCES HKA Main landing page www.hastingskickboxing.co.uk/kickstartnow YouTube https://www.youtube.com/user/Hastingskickboxing HKA Facebook page https://www.facebook.com/Hastingskickboxing carldenne@hotmail.com ABOUT THE HOST Hi, my name is Carl Denne. I was born in Hastings in 1980. Married, father of two beautiful daughters, Bethany and Leigha. My daughters, the wife, and gym ARE MY LIFE. IF I'M HONEST, I pretty much failed at school. Heavily dyslexic, I was dismissed for being a “naughty kid” that didn't want to learn. I was heavily bullied for having shit clothes and ginger afro hair. I didn't have many friends. When I say bullied I don't mean called a “poo-poo head” and being looked at in a nasty way. I mean thrown downstairs, and hit with chairs and tables. Clothes were stolen whilst in the shower. That kind of bullying… Oh, how things have changed… Martial arts, and specifically Kickboxing, have changed my life, and now I am much happier and change other people's lives for the better on a daily basis. I am a complete adrenaline freak, so In my spare time, track days, jumping out of planes, sitting on top of them, rage buggies in the desert… The higher, the faster the better for me. I'm always looking for the next thing to get my blood pumping, so if anyone has a challenge I've not found yet, please feel free to share. I do like a Saturday night movie night, Chinese, Netflix, lots of chocolate with my three little ladies. I love being around my friends and family. This is why I love the crazy HKA family so much, as this is my extended family. I left school with pretty much nothing! A few sad GCSE's C - D grade, BUT I did have a shit-ton of energy and passion to achieve and to prove all the teachers and people that looked down on me for all those years, wrong. So, after a few jobs here and there, I settled on working for Openreach (BT) as a cabler/jointer copper and fibre optic multi-skilled engineer with HGV. I left this in 2015 to chase my dream of running my own Kickboxing Academy and working with the future of today, rather than a job that just paid the bills. I've trained pretty much my whole life: Karate, boxing, Judo, from the age of 9, and of course, I've now done over 29 years of Kickboxing. I've passed many Instructors and coaches courses, attended many training courses and seminars, grading up through the syllabus. I passed my 4-hour hell-on-earth 3rd Dan black belt in July 2018 with the ICO. If I'm honest my real passion and skills have come from learning the hard way; through being in the trenches. I know how it feels to be on your arse. I know how it feels to have to pull yourself out of the pit. I've been through a divorce. I've lived through the pain and have worked with thousands of members, students, children, teachers and adults over the years, and the one thing I get told every time is how well I/we keep it very real, and that I have a complete understanding on most eventualities. Carl reflects on 24 years of driving and shares his car journey, explaining how they are at the heart of what he loves and have also been a great way of making money over the years As an entrepreneur making money on cars has been about spotting great deals and putting in the work and over the years Carl has driven some cool cars and traded cars successfully. As a die-hard petrolhead, Carl has loved nearly all his cars and this is a great listen about how cars and what you want from them, changes as you move through life. KEY TAKEAWAYS The first car I drove on the road was my Dad's BMW 528 After my Astra was written off I broke it down and sold the parts individually I didn't make money but I didn't lose money on it Rather than just saying I can't be bothered, I looked for a way to not lose money on it to make a deal The entrepreneur in me is always asking how can I help others out and where is there a deal Cars were much cheaper up north and I started looking for good car deals there I'm a petrol head and I love my cars, I went from having a Seat Leon Cupra R225 I loved to driving a Fiesta 950 popular in green There were lots of Seats, I really love them, but my biggest moneymaker was a Westfield that I fully rebuilt. It's about doing the work other people can't be bothered to do You have to put in the work if you want to get the deals If you are prepared to do what others aren't you can make money with cars Carl's Cars 1997 - Dad's BMW 528… Mine was off the road... 1997- V Astra 1.3 merit 1998 - VW Scirocco 1.6 1999 - V Belmont SRI 130 2000 - Seat Leon 2.0 8v 2002- VW golf 1.8gl D 2003- BMW 525 TDI 2004- Seat Leon Cupra 2005 - fiesta 950 popular (green) (Split up with Jen) - Peugeot 405. 2006 - Skyline r32 GTS-4 2006- Seat Leon Cupra R 225 2007 - Seat Leon 59. Carl reflects on how he is now, re-educating himself on how to have a better business, a better life and how he can be a better version of himself. Many people think their education ends when they leave school but if you want to get the best out of life for you and your family learning can be a lifelong process. Working with a good mentor means Carl is learning how to play a bigger game and grow and in this episode, he shares how this really is the game-changer. KEY TAKEAWAYS Lots of people feel their education ends when they start a job I'm constantly learning and going on courses but didn't see it as education Kickboxing for me has never been a business it's just what I love doing Learning about business has been a game-changer Being part of the Mastermind group and discussing business with other like-minded people is what has made a difference The power of being around people who are further along in their journey has really helped me play a bigger game and grow the business We've moved the business and grown in size My mentor is a life coach helping me to be a better me. He is educating me on a better life, a better me and a better business It's about having a good plan and strategy Effectively I've had to go back to education to learn how to have a better business and a better life Never stop learning and educating yourself BEST MOMENTS ‘For me and lots of others, education ended when I finished school' ‘Working smarter is definitely better than just working hard' ‘Learning can look different but can continue throughout your life' VALUABLE RESOURCES HKA Main landing page www.hastingskickboxing.co.uk/kickstartnow YouTube https://www.youtube.com/user/Hastingskickboxing HKA Facebook page https://www.facebook.com/Hastingskickboxing carldenne@hotmail.com ABOUT THE HOST Hi, my name is Carl Denne. Carl explains how fair exchange is a part of everything we do in life and why although we may have different perceptions of good value we all part of a process of exchanging value every day. When you understand more about fair exchange it's an opportunity to offer more value and when you do, value will come back to you. KEY TAKEAWAYS Fair exchange is in everything we do in life Everything we do comes down to value It can be work, relationships or training it's everywhere Everything we do has a value We all have different perceptions of good value Your work is exchanging your time for a salary If you have high-value relationships you need to be able to bring high value to the relationship People value their time in different ways It's about what you want and need, people often put more value on what they want than what they need If you want to have better experiences you need to give better value out to others It's always about achieving the right balance BEST MOMENTS ‘Everything we do in life is about fair exchange' ‘There is value and exchange in everything we do' ‘Give value in your life and it will come back to you tenfold' VALUABLE RESOURCES HKA Main landing page www.hastingskickboxing.co.uk/kickstartnow YouTube https://www.youtube.com/user/Hastingskickboxing HKA Facebook page https://www.facebook.com/Hastingskickboxing carldenne@hotmail.com ABOUT THE HOST Hi, my name is Carl Denne. Carl reflects on the importance of really living your life and making sure you are in a position to go with the opportunities in life. It can be much easier to not ask when we are fearful that the answer will be ‘no' but we all create the lives we have and if you overcome your fears and ask the answer could be ‘yes' Everyone is on a journey through life and everything you do creates your memories going forward so don't put things off until tomorrow, stop and ask yourself ‘why can't I do it today?' KEY TAKEAWAYS You should just tell someone if you like them It can be easy for the fears to come to the forefront but you need to push through them and take action Often we fear the worst but nine times out of ten it doesn't happen You have to ask the question Be prepared for the answer and be prepared for the worst You might get a ‘no' but you may get a ‘yes' Everyone has the same amount of time in the day it's all about how you use it Whatever you do in the present is creating a memory You are creating your life The more you work and fully commit to what you are doing the more opportunities will open up to you Don't put off things today until tomorrow Ask yourself ‘can I get it done today?' People everywhere are struggling with motivation to find the time, the energy, the group of people they need to get going. Carl offers some great advice about how to stop procrastinating and get moving, even if it's just one step at a time. He also explains why everyone should surround themselves with the right people so that they can pull you along and lift you up. Carl discusses the ways people look at a situation finding either a negative or positive. He uses a great example from the HKA where recently a class was attended by fewer people than usual. Is this a negative or a positive? For those who were there it meant 1:1 coaching and the chance to make huge strides forward in the session. If something negative always look for a positive there will be one you just need to look at the situation with the right mindset. KEY TAKEWAYS Is your cup half full or half empty? It all depends on how you look at any situation The five people who were there got a one to one session with the coaches They went from a 6/10 to a 10/10 just in that session because of the 1:1 coaching they got and it was a positive for the coaches who got to work with a small group Any situation can be looked at from a negative or positive viewpoint If something negative happens try to always look for the positive BEST MOMENTS ‘There seem to have been quite a few negatives from people recently' ‘I've had things cancelled and I can moan about it or do what I've done and gone horse riding - getting some decompression time' VALUABLE RESOURCES HKA Main landing page www.hastingskickboxing.co.uk/kickstartnow YouTube https://www.youtube.com/user/Hastingskickboxing HKA Facebook page https://www.facebook.com/Hastingskickboxing carldenne@hotmail.com ABOUT THE HOST Hi, my name is Carl Denne. I know how it feels to be on your arse. I know how it feels to have to pull yourself out of the pit. I've been through a divorce. Following a recent invitation to be a guest speaker Carl reflects on the experience and the value in finding the time to take a step back and look at what you have achieved. It can be easy to be busy all the time and not aware of the difference you are making and the forward trajectory of movement in your life. Find the time to stop and review and like Carl you will see the bigger picture and be able to celebrate all your achievements. KEY TAKEAWAYS It was good to have an open forum It’s about the ability to develop and achieve We have pushed outside our boundaries It’s about taking a step back and looking at what we have done Lots of people talk a lot but don’t ever actually do anything Your actions speak louder than any words Saying I will do something makes me accountability It’s about having belief in yourself and your team Don’t be afraid to try great things It doesn’t matter if you fail it’s about trying and keep trying Don’t be afraid of talking about what you have done and achieved Never be afraid of the ‘what ifs’ they are what make you stronger BEST MOMENTS ‘It’s the first time I’ve talked out loud about what we’ve achieved at HKA” ‘I just feel we’ve been busy all years’ ‘Never be afraid to take the leap outside of your comfort zone’ VALUABLE RESOURCES HKA Main landing page www.hastingskickboxing.co.uk/kickstartnow YouTube https://www.youtube.com/user/Hastingskickboxing HKA Facebook page https://www.facebook.com/Hastingskickboxing carldenne@hotmail.com ABOUT THE HOST Hi, my name is Carl Denne. Carl explores the reality for most entrepreneurs – working constantly with no time for themselves. He reflects on the importance of being a little bit selfish and scheduling time for yourself and looks at the positive impact this can ultimately have across all areas of your life. If you want something to change you need to commit to it and in saying it out loud in this episode Carl wants to not only help others but also get accountable to being a little bit selfish himself and find his own time to decompress and open his mind to new ideas and thoughts. KEY TAKEAWAYS We all need to be selfish You can be too selfish or you can be at the other end of the scale and spend all your time trying to please others The key is finding a balance You need to dedicate time to spend on yourself You should schedule in time for yourself By decompressing you allow your mind to open to new ideas and thoughts Lots of entrepreneurs and business people are working constantly and the only way to escape it is to schedule activities that provide an escape If I say it out loud I’ll be accountable to others to make it happen and make the time I need Find a time in the week for yourself without any other distractions BEST MOMENTS ‘Because I was going with someone else I didn’t want to let them down’ ‘I know if I put it in the diary I’ll go and do it and engage in it’ ‘It’s nice to have a little time away to decompress’ VALUABLE RESOURCES HKA Main landing page www.hastingskickboxing.co.uk/kickstartnow YouTube https://www.youtube.com/user/Hastingskickboxing HKA Facebook page https://www.facebook.com/Hastingskickboxing carldenne@hotmail.com ABOUT THE HOST Hi, my name is Carl Denne. Carl reflects on why sometimes it's okay to be selfish sometimes, so long as find a balance between being a people-pleaser and someone who is there for themselves. KEY TAKEAWAYS It's okay to be selfish, but only a little bit selfish You can be too selfish, but you can also do nothing but please others. If you have too much work or stress, you won't work to your best ability It's about finding the balance between the two things - being there for others and there for ourselves. Make a set time for yourself regularly, and put it in the diary! Making time for yourself will make it easier to fulfil it. Carl reflects on how as humans most of us are sheep and want to follow others. Sometimes following others can be a good thing but it can also be negative when it results in people becoming drawn into others arguments and dramas. As someone who doesn’t like confrontation, Carl is always looking for a solution and if more people stood up and took this approach there would be less confrontation. Create your own destiny and be kind to others and you will be part of the solution, not the mob mentality. KEY TAKEAWAYS Often people encourage others into an argument they are having When others get drawn in it can end up with a number of people going up against a single other person. It’s so much easier to be a follower rather than stand alone If you are not part of the solution you are part of the problem Even when there is the slightest drama I’ll be looking for a solution If there were more people looking for a solution there would be fewer problems It’s about having and following your own thoughts You need to create your own destiny If you are in a group and its not nice you need to get out If you think something is wrong don’t be afraid to say so Be kind to people BEST MOMENTS ‘You shouldn’t get drawn into other people’s dramas’ ‘I don’t like confrontation so I want to find a solution’ ‘If you are around the wrong people you will get dragged into things’ VALUABLE RESOURCES HKA Main landing page www.hastingskickboxing.co.uk/kickstartnow YouTube https://www.youtube.com/user/Hastingskickboxing HKA Facebook page https://www.facebook.com/Hastingskickboxing carldenne@hotmail.com ABOUT THE HOST Hi, my name is Carl Denne. Carl has today had his seventh visit from the police in response to a complaint. Previously he has just been trying to carry on and not say anything but in this episode he talks directly to whoever is making the complaints sharing exactly what he is doing at HKA, reaching out and trying to serve as many people in the community when they really need the help and support. Whoever you are Carl would love it if you popped in to HKA and then he can share more about how HKA is supporting the vulnerable in the local community and he’ll make the tea! KEY TAKEAWAYS If you are the person who is doing this come in and say hello and I’ll happily explain what we are doing. To our members, we are open, to under 18’s we are open, to children of key workers and children who are at risk we are open. We are not a gym we are an academy, there is not shared use of equipment. We work with the council and schools to support those who need it the most. Complaining just stops us from helping and serving the people in the community who need our help. There is depression, anxiety, and self-harming happening, the lockdown has not been easy for teenagers. We are just trying to help people as many people as we can in the best way we know how to. As the schools get back into a daily routine there are lots of teenagers and parents who are struggling. You are not alone and Carl explains how you need to be a positive role model to your children, show them how to be motivated and use gentle persuasion rather than confrontation. This is a time of change and teenagers more than any others are finding it really hard so understanding and knowing how to reach out are vital. KEY TAKEAWAYS Parents you are not alone many teenagers are struggling at the moment As adults, we can work through our emotions and feelings for hormonal teenagers it’s much harder Teenagers have been stuck in on their technology so going back to seeing people and going out is really hard. They have gone from a few hundred steps a day to several thousand a day back at school The drama and stress has increased because they are back at school It can be easy to be sucked into the world of social media Get away from everything by taking a walk outside. Don’t criticise your children if you are not prepared to be a positive role model You need to show your children how to be motivated. Don’t go for confrontation with teenagers, gentle persuasion is much more effective. Get around people who are like-minded and doing positive things. The pandemic and lockdown has been tough for all business owners and the fitness industry has been no exception. Listen in today as Carl is interviewed by fellow martial arts podcaster Gordon Burcham. Carl Denne shares his inspiring story of how after losing everything he was able to rebuild his martial arts business and with the support of his mentors, created a brand new studio during the pandemic. They discuss finding the strength to rebuild a business, the importance of surrounding yourself with like minded people and how they can help pull you up in times of need. KEY TAKEAWAYS You may face challenging times in business, and could even lose everything you have worked for. Losing everything you had and having to rebuild everything from the beginning again is a challenge that will make you stronger. Strengthening your business through a pandemic is a huge achievement. You have taken your business to a new level through the hardest time many entrepreneurs will have ever faced. Having people in your life who are direct and honest with you can help motivate you. You need to have people pull you up in the right direction rather than holding you back by trying to protect you from failure. When something feels right to you, you will know and you will run with it. Having people on the same level as you or slightly further ahead than you can help inspire you. Discussing your business with others in a similar industry can help you identify areas of your current model that need tweaking. Having people identify areas of your business model that are excelling can be really motivational, and give you the confidence boost you need. Surround yourself with positive and like minded people in all aspects of your life. It doesn’t matter what class or sport you partake in, you will always be surrounded by people who want to do the same thing as you. By being around people that understand your passion as a business, this will help you streamline your business and excel. BEST MOMENTS “I very quickly went through the ranks within the fight team.” “It was pain like i’ve never felt.” “This felt right.” “I probably would have had a full on meltdown in lockdown if it wasn’t for this.” ABOUT THE GUEST Carl Denne Founder and Chief Instructor of HKA, I have been teaching kickboxing for over 20 years and running HKA since 1998. At Hastings Kickboxing Academy (HKA), we have put together different programmes for children, teenagers, and adults to help with their development, general fitness, and confidence. All while increasing their strength, performance and building their self-esteem. HKA is a family run business dedicated to the community. We give our time, experience and knowledge back to our students and help them become the confident leaders of tomorrow. I was born in Hastings in 1980. Married, father of two beautiful daughters, Bethany and Leigha. My daughters, the wife, and gym ARE MY LIFE. IF I’M HONEST, I pretty much failed at school. Heavily dyslexic, I was dismissed for being a “naughty kid” that didn’t want to learn. I was heavily bullied for having shit clothes and ginger afro hair. I didn’t have many friends. When I say bullied I don’t mean called a “poo-poo head” and being looked at in a nasty way. I mean thrown downstairs, and hit with chairs and tables. Clothes were stolen whilst in the shower. That kind of bullying… Oh, how things have changed… Martial arts, and specifically Kickboxing, have changed my life, and now I am much happier and change other people’s lives for the better on a daily basis. I am a complete adrenaline freak, so In my spare time, track days, jumping out of planes, sitting on top of them, rage buggies in the desert… The higher, the faster the better for me. I’m always looking for the next thing to get my blood pumping, so if anyone has a challenge I’ve not found yet, please feel free to share. I do like a Saturday night movie night, Chinese, Netflix, lots of chocolate with my three little ladies. I love being around my friends and family. This is why I love the crazy HKA family so much, as this is my extended family. I left school with pretty much nothing! A few sad GCSE’s C - D grade, BUT I did have a shit-ton of energy and passion to achieve, and to prove all the teachers and people that looked down on me for all those years, wrong. I’ve trained pretty much my whole life: Karate, boxing, Judo, from the age of 9, and of course, I’ve now done over 29 years of Kickboxing. I’ve passed many Instructors and coaches courses, attended many training courses and seminars, grading up through the syllabus. I passed my 4-hour hell-on-earth 3rd Dan black belt in July 2018 with the ICO. If I’m honest my real passion and skills have come from learning the hard way; through being in the trenches. I know how it feels to be on your arse. I know how it feels to have to pull yourself out of the pit. I’ve been through a divorce. It can be easy to let others actions affect you and your life but it’s important to listen to those who are supportive and if you know you are in the right keep going. The actions of others are not something you can control but the way you respond is in your control so it’s important to do what you want to and not let others actions affect you. As Carl and his team work towards re-opening it’s the support that they get that keeps them going and motivated. KEY TAKEAWAYS What goes through people’s minds when they make a complaint? Competition is healthy it’s a good thing keeping you on your toes. Someone complaining just makes me strive for more. Many years ago someone complaining would have put me in a very different place. I would have thought about it and dwelled on it for weeks. You can’t control others actions, you can only control your own. Don’t let other people peoples actions control you. This very candid and honest episode looks at confidence, self-harming and what makes a difference on the pathway to recovery. The current situation has amplified the emotions of everyone but for teenagers it has been particularly difficult and as a result many are struggling. Physical activity and in particular striking workouts help to support emotional release and in this episode Carl talks with Libby about the role a supportive network, kickboxing and communication play in the journey to recovery from self-harming and the challenges along the way. KEY TAKEAWAYS The lockdown has heightened everyone’s emotions and the pressure We were being gentle when she needed it and trying to motivate her when she needed it, it’s a constant juggling act. It’s an emotional rollercoaster for us and for her. Communication is key you can’t get it right every day. Everyone is individual they are not just our children they are people in their own right. Her moods go up and down but you worry when she’s good its just about waiting for when she comes down. Love and respect is so important. The more out in the open it is the better it is. When others are involved it makes it better for everyone. Working out produces endorphins and the people at HKA genuinely care and she can feel it Striking workouts help with a release that makes you feel better. Looking after yourself so you can look after others is vital Speak to the right people to create a supportive network. You have to understand it’s a journey to recovery not a quick fix. BEST MOMENTS ‘It’s like the volume has been turned up to max on teenage angst’ ‘In the moment I just wanted to make her feel OK’ ‘From the minute I spoke with you I felt no judgement and knew you understood’ VALUABLE RESOURCES HKA Main landing page www.hastingskickboxing.co.uk/kickstartnow YouTube https://www.youtube.com/user/Hastingskickboxing HKA Facebook page https://www.facebook.com/Hastingskickboxing carldenne@hotmail.com ABOUT THE HOST Hi, my name is Carl Denne. Carl shares his own experiences and struggles with sleep and great practical advice that anyone can use to improve their sleep routine. There are a range of different things you can do but for Carl, the game changer was leaving his phone in another room. Everyone is different and you will need to find out what works for you as an individual but this episode brings together great content to get started on improving your sleep. KEY TAKEAWAYS Go to bed when you feel tired so that you are responding to your sleep cycle As part of a couple make sure you work together and deal with any issues or disagreements prior to going to bed. Your bedroom is not your office so remove anything connected with work so your bedroom is a relaxing space away from work. Don’t use your phone just prior to going to sleep If you wake up then get up and start your day. Stress and worry will affect your sleep so you need to train yourself to be able to change your mindset. Don’t eat anything 2 hours prior to going to bed. Be open to talking to others and changing your mindset Being around negative people will bring you down so get around positive and driven people. We are all different with different sleep patterns and you need to find out what works for you. Nikki Wetherell was a Personal Trainer for 12 years and is now a Somatic Sex Coach, Pelvic Floor health specialist and Holistic health practitioner. In part two of this two-part episode, Nikki discusses how after a series of traumatic experiences she was able to thrive and turn her life experience around to help and empower others and help them heal. As a Somatic Sex coach Nikki helps through inner work that really makes a difference and supports in the journey individuals take to understand more about themselves and how to achieve what they really want in life. KEY TAKEAWAYS Somatic coaching is about understanding how we feel things in our bodies. Our issues are in our tissues all of our experiences are held in our bodies in some way. You are peeling back and helping people integrate more into their lives. There are many reasons why people might not be able to achieve what they want to achieve. Doing inner work is where you see the biggest difference. Women are subject to lots of conditioning about body shape. In the tip of the clitoris, there are thousands of nerve endings. Women are under a lot of pressure about how they look and to perform. Communication both ways is vitally important you need to communicate about what you like and don’t like. If you don’t know what you want how can you expect someone else to know? A partnership takes work and how you say something makes all the difference. Sometimes it can be about laying the foundations for something new. You need to find ways to communicate in a way that doesn’t shame. Many people are feeling hopeless due to the fact that life isn't the same right now, but there are alternatives out there. All that's needed is the will and spirit to grasp these new ways of working. In this week's show, Carl tells you why there are no excuses for not trying to be a better you. KEY TAKEAWAYS Many ways of working have changed due to the restrictions on our lives, but if you embrace them, the results are almost exactly as effective. It just requires a little patience and will on your side. There's no sense in complaining about the fact that you can't get things done. Everything is achievable if you take the reins and make the change yourself. BEST MOMENTS 'It starts with you!' 'We need you guys to give us that energy back!' I’ve lived through the pain and have worked with thousands of members, students, children, teachers and adults over the years, and the one thing I get told every time is how well I/we keep it very real, and that I have a complete understanding on most eventualities. Thank you for reading and listening. I hope you connect with myself and the team, take away some ideas, understand you’re not alone, and that it’s good to talk, listen and help others as and when you can. Carl is with Stuart Baillie founder of ‘Hastings in Focus’ a local news website that values its place within the local community and the part it can play. He talks about the importance of self-reliance and not sitting back waiting for someone to give you what you want. Stuart shares great advice about what you need to do to make it happen yourself and how if you're trying and it's not happening what you can do to work out what changes you need to make in life. KEY TAKEAWAYS When you get the right people around you it can help to make your pathway smoother. If you want things to happen you have to be prepared to go out there and get them. Everyone has a value to them and you need to value yourself. Covid is a virus and we all react to it differently because we are all individuals. We expect everybody to react to everything in the same way but our emotional and physical responses are all different. Boxing is something I’m incredibly proud of. Victory boxing was a course that culminated with a fight in the ring in front of an audience Training for the Victory fight required focus and commitment People who train need not only to be fit physically but also have the right mental attitude. Boxing is about determination and absolute focus The mindset needed when fighting is transferable to your everyday life. You have to put the effort in if you want things to happen You have to use the lessons from the boxing ring and apply them to everyday life. You have to be prepared to go where others won’t. Everything you do contributes in some way to your journey and experiences. BEST MOMENTS ‘Sometimes it can just be that one journey has ended and another is starting’ ‘With Judo I found a sport that my body shape was suited to’ ‘Often when you are up against a problem you are so close that it can be difficult to see but you need to take a step away’ VALUABLE RESOURCES HKA Main landing page www.hastingskickboxing.co.uk/kickstartnow YouTube https://www.youtube.com/user/Hastingskickboxing HKA Facebook page https://www.facebook.com/Hastingskickboxing carldenne@hotmail.com Hastings In Focus Website ABOUT THE GUEST I started my own business in Dumfries in 1992 by 1999 we'd had some good times but overall, it wasn't going where I wanted it to so I stopped banging my head off a brick wall and made changes. Then we had a big reset and came down here because opportunities appeared better – and they were, moving, despite the huge upheaval and significant risk was the best thing we ever did. I went to work for Dog World in 2003 and led a management buyout in 2007 – I didn't know how to buy a company but wanted to do it, so found out how, got good people around me and did it, spent over a million quid. By 2017 newspaper publishing is a shit place to be and I reach the conclusion that I can't return the business to profit and take the decision to close it down and in the process, I move in to "property" because I own the building Dog World operated out of so I adapted, change course a bit and moved on to what has been a better life since 2017, reduced stress, anxiety etc. Also, stress and anxiety are part of life, they will happen to you no matter what you do so don't use them as an excuse. In short, I'm kind of tired of hearing people make excuses about how their life isn't working out but they do nothing about it and expect someone - god knows who but someone - to bail them out. When like I've done and like you've done, you take a risk, take a chance, you can only ever blame yourself for the mistakes and we've all made a few _ and I reckon you and I probably still worry about our past mistakes and don't give ourselves the credit for what we've got right and I reckon having got myself to a position where I don't need to worry too much about formal work again at the age of 55 was something of an achievement. ABOUT THE HOST Hi, my name is Carl Denne. I’ve trained pretty much my whole life: Karate, boxing, Judo, from the age of 9, and of course, I’ve now done over 29 years of Kickboxing. I’ve passed many Instructors and coaches courses, attended many training courses and seminars, grading up through the syllabus. Nikki Wetherell was a Personal Trainer for 12 years and is now a Somatic Sex Coach, Pelvic Floor health specialist and Holistic health practitioner. In part One of this two-part episode, Nikki discusses her experience of rape as a teenager and navigating her teens and early 20’s. From being too scared to say anything, and being diagnosed after a break down with PTSD, Bipolar, Anxiety & OCD. Plus, teenage pregnancy to meeting her incredible husband of 20 years. KEY TAKEAWAYS After the rape when I wasn’t believed I felt abandoned, I went into self-destruct mode. When I met my husband there was a lot of getting to know each other and moving towards a new part of our lives together. I didn’t tell him everything he just knew I was a mess. Eventually, I just felt like I was living a lie because I hadn’t told him and it caused me a huge amount of anxiety. Keeping it a secret affected every aspect of my life. I couldn’t control my emotions but found that exercise helped. I couldn’t say it but I was hoping that someone would realise that I was trying to talk about the rape. I felt like a was a massive burden to everyone. Knowing that you are not alone is hugely important. EMDR was really helpful and trauma is relative, you feel what you feel. We all need to be much more understanding of everyone around us. Carl takes a virtual tour around his brand new gym and shares how he feels about things. Moving and expanding are huge projects to undertake and Carl is set to achieve both in a very short timeframe as he and his team get ready to open the new Hastings Kickboxing Academy. It’s reassuring to hear that even Carl has times when he worries about everything getting done in time but as someone who is used to the challenges and overcoming them he explains why it’s about the self-talk, making a list and cracking the f#ck on. KEY TAKEAWAYS Most days are great but on some days when I walk around, I worry about how it will all get done in time. The ring went up at the weekend. We’ve got 2weeks over the new year to move into and get ready for opening. We are creating a community hub next door and building a charity There are so many things that need to be done. It’s 99% good but some days I’m a bit flat because there are hundreds of little jobs to do The main driver for me is reminding myself to crack on with your list If you are struggling then remember you are not alone Everyone has wobbles. Remember you have to just crack on with your list and look at what you’ve already achieved BEST MOMENTS ‘We’ve got people helping out and that’s great’ ‘I have to remind myself to shut up Carl, stop being a b#tch, pull your pants on and crack the f#ck on’ VALUABLE RESOURCES HKA Main landing page www.hastingskickboxing.co.uk/kickstartnow YouTube https://www.youtube.com/user/Hastingskickboxing HKA Facebook page https://www.facebook.com/Hastingskickboxing carldenne@hotmail.com ABOUT THE HOST Hi, my name is Carl Denne. Mark Simmonds one-liner comedian and host of the podcast ‘Jokes with Mark Simmonds’ Talks about how he got started as a comedian and what it takes to get a comedic training, build your confidence and deal with the hecklers. He also discusses developing his confidence and his experience as a martial arts fighter in this in-depth chat, providing a great insight into the world of professional comedians and how they have made it work during lockdown. KEY TAKEAWAYS I need to be able to interact with an audience, it’s the feedback I need I’ve always tried to make people laugh Every comedian has jokes that don’t work on stage and we usually talk about those on my podcast. When you start as a comedian the overnight circuit is the training ground for everything you need to learn. Everything is learning, you learn about jokes, analyse things and manage the audience You write the jokes and then go to new material nights to try them out. You take the best material to preview shows and then onto the actual shows. If you are doing one-liners you can adapt and change during the set. Knowing what you can do, is what makes you powerful. As a martial arts teacher, I’ve always gone with how it feels in the moment to make sure you are giving people what they need. You need to be prepared when you are fighting, I think that’s why I trained so hard. Heckling is something new comedians are frightened about but the reality is the adrenalin means you can come up with a comeback. Building from the ground up and grafting has been what Carl has done to get to where he is now. He talks about the journey, the setbacks, the challenges and the highs that have brought him where he is now about to open the gym of his dreams. Kickboxing saved him when he was younger, it is something that is a part of him and he has used the mindset of winning and the confidence to succeed in business. He has the ultimate belief that the new HKA will work because of his willingness to graft and the great team around him and anyone who knows Carl knows he’s right. KEY TAKEAWAYS It has developed into something so much more than a gym. As someone who was bullied at school, I have always wanted to help and give back. We are known for helping those who lack confidence and have been bullied. We might look like a gym but education is woven into what we do. We tried, during the lockdown to give as much as we could through zoom classes and speaking to families individually. We have had several knock backs around planning but this is the move we really needed. The layout of the new building is much better and will mean we can do so much more. We want to provide services that will help the community such as healthy food. The ethos of HKA is about people being properly trained and ready if they are fighting competitively. We do have space during the day and want to encourage new classes to expand the range of what we do. Our members have a great ethos and attitude to training. I never forget where I’ve come from and I’m honoured about where we are but it’s about the great team around me. Everything we have built has been built from the ground up. BEST MOMENTS ‘It’s all quite surreal at the moment but I think when I take a step back I’ll realise it’s something quite special’ ‘It’s about giving children the chance to feel safe and normal’ ‘I’ve had a hundred highs and a hundred lows over the last few weeks’ VALUABLE RESOURCES HKA Main landing page www.hastingskickboxing.co.uk/kickstartnow YouTube https://www.youtube.com/user/Hastingskickboxing HKA Facebook page https://www.facebook.com/Hastingskickboxing carldenne@hotmail.com ABOUT THE HOST Hi, my name is Carl Denne. Carl shares great information about the question people are asking him ‘how has HKA been able to stay open?’ As someone who is always focused on helping others, Carl goes through the process that HKA has been through to stay open in recent months, providing detailed information and great tips on working with others and learning to evolve and adjust to meet the rules. It’s always about looking at any challenge, working out how to overcome it and making a plan. KEY TAKEAWAYS It’s the police who will arrest you and it’s the council or environmental health who will fine you. I explained everything that was in place to meet the guidelines and asked the question about staying open. There is an argument about the differences between gyms, academies and martial arts centres We are an academy and we work with local schools, the police and run courses for the local council. You have to evolve and adjust to meet the rules Look at the challenge, work out how to overcome it and make a plan The things you can control you need to fight for You have to keep pushing forward. Carl is talking with Emma B about her hugely successful career as a supermodel and the subsequent move she made to bikini and bodybuilding shows. As someone who was travelling the world and walking the fashion catwalks with Naomi C, Claudia Schiffer and Kate Moss along with campaigns and fashion shoots for Elle and Vogue, Emma knows what it’s like to experience a meteoric rise in the fashion industry. She discusses with Carl the impact of being in both positive and negative work environments and the impact of social media negativity on the person it’s directed at. Emma chose to walk away to be a full-time mum and this has brought her both confidence in her personal beliefs and positivity in her life. KEY TAKEAWAYS Travelling all the time as a model was very lonely, I spent a lot of time on my own. I was a little girl trying to have the confidence of a woman. Social media means people make comments that can affect other’s mental health. You always focus on the negative comments, they are the ones that stay with you not the positive comments. I chose to walk away it wasn’t for me anymore and I chose to be a full-time mum. Now I’m much more confident about my own personal beliefs. When I was doing fashion modelling it was beautiful and there was a lot of positivity. When I made the transition from fashion to glamour modelling social media was growing and it was then that I felt things becoming more negative. People often feel if they can pull you down it will make them feel better. When I moved into training for bodybuilding I realised I could create whatever body I wanted. To get ready for a show means 8-10 weeks of dedicated training and diet. When I’m not looking at getting ready for a show I’m less strict with my diet. I can struggle with being motivated but eating healthy is really important for me. I do a 3-mile mindful walk every time and it makes a huge difference to my mental well-being. She has taken part in catwalk shows such as Chanel, Dior, Gucci, Fendi and has shared the catwalk with Naomi C, Claudia Schiffer, Cindy Crawford, Kate Moss. Emma has done lots of high-end fashion campaigns and shoots for publications such as Elle, Vogue and Marie Claire. She left the fashion world to peruse more glamour types of modelling and did shoots for covers such as FHM, LOADED MAG, MAXIM, Esquire and FRONT mag. Emma started her fitness journey in 2012 and came 2nd in my first ever show for Hercules. Carl is in the middle of moving location and creating the ultimate HKA, so that he is able to give people the very best experience when they come to train, but with this pursuit of his dream comes fear and anxiety and in this very honest episode, he reflects on pushing through the fear to get to where you want to be. Carl explains why you should always follow your heart and your dreams, there will be bumps along the way but you can achieve your goals and get where you want to be if you keep going so take a deep breath, count down, 3-2-1, grab life by the balls and strive for what you want in life. KEY TAKEAWAYS When you stop for a moment and start thinking about it that when the fear and anxiety is phenomenal. I’m really excited about the possibilities but also really scared about what we are taking it on. I have a vision and plan in my head and just go for it, 9 times out of 10 it works out for me. Take a deep breath count down from 3 and start running. If you have a bad day look at why and change things moving forward. When you overcome an obstacle, you can take that learning with you and it makes you stronger. Start every day with the intention that it will be a productive day. Follow your heart and your dreams, there will be bumps along the way but you can achieve your goals and get where you want to be if you keep going. 3-2-1 Grab Life By the Balls and strive for what you want. There are many hurdles within life and a lot of the time we put in our own hurdles but currently, we all have restrictions, hurdles, in our way because of COVID19. The gym has had to close but instead of just doing nothing Carl and his team are overcoming their hurdles in any way they can with online classes designed to make sure everyone can take part. Everyone has a choice you can either stand still and be defeated by the hurdles that need to be overcome in life or you can try your best to get over, get under or kick the hurdles out of the way. KEY TAKEAWAYS You can either stand in front of it and be defeated saying you can’t get over it or you can try your best. Our hurdle is that the gym has had to close and we have many hurdles to get over to allow us to continue with classes online. You can give up or find ways to get over, round, under or kick the hurdles out of the way. The important thing is to try and everyone has a choice. You can choose to try and overcome the hurdle or you can let it stop you. We are doing loads of challenges to keep everyone fit and healthy. We are delivering as much as we can on training, mindset, mental and physical health. In life, you can either stop, stand still and do nothing or work hard, grind and do everything to move forward and achieve Every time a hurdle comes my way I do my best to overcome it. Carl shares the importance of hard work and grind and being able to deal with whatever challenges you face along the way in this episode about not only the journey of HKA but also the exciting news about a move to a new HKA gym in January 2021. HKA has faced many challenges along the way and each time Carl’s dream and hard work have been what’s made the difference. Hear about why you should never stop chasing your dreams and always be prepared to put in the grind. KEY TAKEAWAYS My journey started at 11 years old at Hastings Martial Arts I walked in and thought I needed to be in a dojo all the time, I fell in love with kickboxing and Kungfu. I had spent my life growing up at Hastings Martial Arts so going out on my and with a different name was really scary. We kept on growing and needed to move so I built my own gym but we had to move out and the challenge was to start again. We’ve moved eight times and each time we’ve had to start again We have kept on growing because everyone has had faith in me and now it’s time to move to somewhere of our own. in January 2021 HKA will be moving to new headquarters, a new super gym and it’s’ going to phenomenal BEST MOMENTS ‘I fell into teaching but it’s something I love’ ‘With the help of everyone, we have kept on growing and expanding’ ‘We have a contract for a new gym and I’m so excited’ VALUABLE RESOURCES HKA Main landing page www.hastingskickboxing.co.uk/kickstartnow YouTube https://www.youtube.com/user/Hastingskickboxing HKA Facebook page https://www.facebook.com/Hastingskickboxing Adult community link https://m.facebook.com/groups/274624209886110?ref=share carldenne@hotmail.com - Join Leigha every weekday for a workout for a fiver per month ABOUT THE HOST Hi, my name is Carl Denne. Carl is with Paul McCleery who combines being a personal trainer with being a lifeboat crew and ultra runs. He discusses what important in his life and why everyone should say yes to everything if they want to live every day in the best way they can. Paul shares the ethos and mindset that have helped him overcome challenges and be able to help others in the community. Life is for living and your confidence is just your ability to do something so all you need to do is say yes and get out there and do it. KEY TAKEAWAYS My job tests me because it’s a people-orientated role and I have a massive expectation of myself. With ultra runs it’s about the mental aspect, being able to overcome the challenges. To compete in ultra-races, you have to believe yourself and take a gamble Get out there and do what you need to do if you want to compete. It’s important to find time for yourself. if you don’t look after yourself you can’t look after those who are important to you. You have to get your priorities right if you want to be effective. Being a lifeguard is an amazing opportunity to learn and help others, it’s about giving back to people and helping out It’s vital you live every day in the best way you can. Say yes to everything you can always say no later Look for the experiences in life that are memorable so that you can look back on your life with no regrets. If you say yes to someone you are creating accountability and are more likely to achieve If you say no to someone you can’t go back and change your mind. Confidence is just your ability to do something and to be able to achieve you need to identify what success it is that you want. I’ve lived through the pain and have worked with thousands of members, students, children, teachers and adults over the years, and the one thing I get told every time is how well I/we keep it very real, and that I have a complete understanding on most eventualities. Carl is with Barry Buchanan, successful ABA fighter and Elite OCR competitor. Barry shares his journey from boxing through to elite competitor in OCR sharing the mindset it takes to achieve in sport and why having the right coach will make all the difference. In this fascinating conversation find out why you have to be prepared to be comfortable being uncomfortable, understand that no one is going to give it to you and learn the art of compromise if you want to be successful in life. KEY TAKEAWAYS It’s about resilience and carrying on even when you want to stop. You have to have the right mindset to be able to move up in any sport. When you have a coach, they have invested in you and you have invested in them it’s about working together as a team. It makes a difference having a positive role model who can advise and help you. When you are fighting it’s all about mindset. The belief I have in myself from boxing has helped to carry me through lots of different situations. When you are in the ring there is nowhere to hide it’s just you and your opponent but having a good team supporting you outside of the ring is vital. Creating a team that can effectively support you is key if you want to succeed. Training is about moving through the pain to the next level and doing things you don’t want to do- it’s about being uncomfortable. Being time-rich has as much value as being financially rich. It’s all about finding the balance with time, training and other commitments - it’s always about the art of compromise. BEST MOMENTS ‘There is no training that makes me feel like boxing training’ ‘Having someone to help you and look up to is really important’ Sometimes I put too much pressure on myself VALUABLE RESOURCES HKA Main landing page www.hastingskickboxing.co.uk/kickstartnow YouTube https://www.youtube.com/user/Hastingskickboxing HKA Facebook page https://www.facebook.com/Hastingskickboxing Adult community link https://m.facebook.com/groups/274624209886110?ref=share carldenne@hotmail.com - Join Leigha every weekday for a workout for a fiver per month ABOUT THE HOST Hi, my name is Carl Denne. Carl issues a challenge to all those who aren’t really putting in the grind – to change and start putting in the work if they want to achieve in life. It’s always about what you are prepared to do because doing the work is what brings the results so those who do the most work consistently are those who are ultimately the most successful. Whatever you want to achieve you have to be prepared to do the work and if you look at those who are the most successful in life they are the ones who have been consistently putting in the grind on the journey to success. KEY TAKEAWAYS You have to work hard in life if you want to achieve anything As you become an adult life gets harder and you have to become resilient and work harder if you want to get on. When you work for someone else you have structure When you work for yourself it’s all about the grind and you have to be prepared to do what it takes. To be at the top of your game, whatever it is you’ve got to be prepared to put the grind in every day. Fighters have the same approach they are prepared to work and those who are the most successful are those who work the hardest. Carl is with Hasting’s running legend Ross Skelton. Ross is an elite runner who has competed in over 238 races. From death's door to competing on a world stage, against Mo Farah Ross has faced and overcome personal adversity to be on the start line alongside professionals such as Mo Farrah and shares his running journey in this fascinating interview. He discusses the importance of consistency, altitude training and having the right mindset if you want to move forward in your life and shares great tips on what it takes to be an elite runner. Whether you are a runner or not Ross’s journey will resonate and there is great advice about what it takes to be successful in whatever you have chosen to focus on. KEY TAKEAWAYS It’s important to peak at the right time and it takes discipline to achieve this. As you get into bigger races you need to adjust mentally with your focus being on the goals you have set yourself. You need to focus on working on yourself and achieving the best you can. It’s important to understand that your focus needs to only be on yourself, others are not important As a runner, each day is completely different so you can’t rely on an App to tell you what to do. High altitude training is simulating the experience of running at a high altitude. Running at high altitude above sea level will over time create more red blood cells meaning that when you compete you will be able to maintain your pace due to increased blood flow. Having the right support system in place is a vital part of running successfully. In life, you have to be prepared to be uncomfortable if you want to get things done. When you put yourself in an uncomfortable situation you will adapt and move past the challenges. If you are consistent you will see drastic improvements in the areas you are consistent in. You have to believe in yourself 100% if you want to achieve anything. This is hard to comprehend when Ross has suffered from Mals, from the age of 10 to the age of 23(that very nearly killed Ross). Median arcuate ligament syndrome (MALS) is a condition in which the median arcuate ligament presses too tightly on the celiac artery (a major branch of the aorta that delivers blood to the stomach, liver, and other organs) and the nerves in the area (celiac plexus) and very nearly killed him, Ross was told he would never be able to run. He’s completed a grueling 26.2-mile race in a time of two hours, 25 minutes, and 50 seconds despite being sick three times. Ross in the 10k I’m ranked 5th. In the Antrim coast half marathon. Took 30 seconds off his PB with an insane - 64:36 and was 10th overall against the like of Mo Farah. The importance of having a good coach/support team. Trains at Bushy park twice a week. Only really fears himself and always wants to achieve the best he can. Carl reflects on how other people often share their opinions, whether they are wanted or not. People have had an opinion about what Carl does since he first started training in martial arts and have carried on but often those who share their opinions about what others should be doing are uneducated in that area. It can easy to be affected by the opinions of others but in this episode, Carl’s message is about learning to believe in yourself and only listening to those who have truly earned the right to an opinion. KEY TAKEAWAYS Some people voiced an opinion that I was overtraining - but being so involved educated me in the sport and having that knowledge means I have been able to start my own business. It was exactly what I needed to be doing to get to where I am now. People say I’m over posting but I don’t post as much as I want to or as much as some of my competitors. If posting means people know about HKA then everyone benefits. People have an opinion about all sorts of things that other people do. People are always happy to have an opinion about someone else and what they are doing. Don’t worry about others worry about yourself. People can have an opinion but they need to keep it to themselves. People often have opinions about things they are uneducated about, things they know nothing about. As HKA re-opens Carl reflects on what you can gain from being part of the HKA family. People have dealt with the lockdown in different ways for some it’s been an opportunity to train more and for others, it has resulted in them doing less. As the world returns to a new norm many of us face working from home which can also bring challenges. The great thing is HKA can help and in this episode, Carl discusses some of the challenges they are seeing at the gym and explains how being part of a gym community can make all the difference. KEY TAKEAWAYS Improve your fitness - it’s important to remember maintaining a level of fitness is key for the many activities we undertake every day. Achieve your ideal weight - now is the time to get back on a diet and lose the excess. Increase your flexibility – if you’ve not been moving and haven’t been going to the gym then you may have become stiff. Anger management – training at the gym can help relieve stress and help with anger issues. Find your Focus – children who are struggling to focus will benefit from time at the gym away from their technology. Get control of your anxiety – there’s lots of fear and anxiety about returning to school and work and training can reduce your negative feelings. Get a daily routine – having a routine sets the pace for the day and training can be an important part of your routine. Carl goes through some of the reasons why you should do martial arts and the positive impact it can have across all areas of your life. Discipline, respect, self-worth, routine and enjoying getting fit are only some of the reasons you should get out there and start taking part in martial arts. This is a great opportunity to focus on the multitude of positives that you gain if you train in martial arts. – there are no negatives so it’s time to get started! KEY TAKEAWAYS People need to have discipline in their lives and it impacts positively on those around them. Having a set routine keeps everyone on track to achieve something every day. Self-defence is an important aspect of martial arts and it’s a fun way to get fit. Having control impacts across all areas of your life and the release of martial arts practice can help you to keep control in other situations. If you understand how you are driven it can help you to implement the drive to achieve what you want in life. Having goals will move you forward in a direction that means you can achieve. Understanding how to lose is vital because in life you are going to lose more than win. Employers are positive about people who have undertaken martial arts and are more likely to employ them. I know how it feels to be on your arse. I know how it feels to have to pull yourself out of the pit. I’ve been through a divorce. I’ve lived through the pain and have worked with thousands of members, students, children, teachers and adults over the years, and the one thing I get told every time is how well I/we keep it very real, and that I have a complete understanding on most eventualities. Carl is talking with Richard Canton Founder of the Canton Martial Arts based in Eastbourne. He is the current five-times world champion in a variety of combative and kata events and achieved this at the WUMA world championships. They discuss the importance of martial arts for building confidence and the right mindset and why learning about how to use goal-setting across all areas of your life is a gamechanger along with how it has been to be a martial arts business owner during a worldwide pandemic. KEY TAKEAWAYS Quality of life is vital and you have to know what’s important to you. You need to be aware of and look after your mental health. Martial arts classes provide the opportunity for release and to relax Having time off doing something completely different and away from martial arts is vital. The lockdown started off as a negative but it has enabled us to restructure and make sure the processes and system we want are in place. As martial arts instructors and business owners, we have had to invest just to keep going even though our income has gone down by a third. People want to come back to classes and training but it’s important to still offer zoom for those who are concerned about face to face classes. We have comprehensive plans in place to meet the requirements and keep members safe. Goals and goal setting are fundamentals if you want to achieve anything. Sport enables effective goal setting and it’s important to take this approach and plan for goals across all areas of your life. You need to learn to not worry about the things you can’t control. Having confidence and the right mindset is a vital part of anything you do and martial arts provides a good place to build both. BEST MOMENTS ‘Zoom has saved many martial arts clubs and the people who do martial arts’ ‘People want to get back into the gym and the dojo’ ‘In a world of uncertainty people crave routine and any certainty we can give’ VALUABLE RESOURCES HKA Main landing page www.hastingskickboxing.co.uk/kickstartnow YouTube https://www.youtube.com/user/Hastingskickboxing HKA Facebook page https://www.facebook.com/Hastingskickboxing Adult community link https://m.facebook.com/groups/274624209886110?ref=share carldenne@hotmail.com - Join Leigha every weekday for a workout for a fiver per month Canton Martial Arts The Perfect 10 Richard Canton's Lifestyle Academy ABOUT THE HOST Hi, my name is Carl Denne. Carl is with Gavin Cook and Jackson White hosts of ‘The Motivated Martial Artists‘ podcast discussing fear, routines and goal setting. Listen in to hear great advice from these 3 seasoned martial arts veterans as they discuss coping with the unknown, adapting to survive successfully and the importance of routine and goal setting for you and your martial arts community moving forwards KEY TAKEAWAYS People can become paralysed by fear and in a time of fear you have to dig down and look for the positive moments. It’s about wanting to look down from the top of the mountain when you come out the other side. Fear is about not knowing, not having the control. When you don’t have a choice there is even more fear about the unknown but you need to try and overcome the fear and move out from your comfort zone. We are now in a position to spend time thinking carefully about goals. Everything we do is very personal to our members that’s why it’s vital to create a schedule and develop a routine. If you don’t schedule things in you won’t complete them. It all about taking action in business. Set yourself tasks to complete each day and plan to achieve something in each period of the day. Building in short bursts of exercise is vital for your mental well being BEST MOMENTS ‘We boost people’s confidence in the gym every day’ ‘Everyone is paralysed because they don’t know what’s on the other side’ ‘It’s important to let your students know what your plans are and that you are going to stay motivated’ VALUABLE RESOURCES HKA Main landing page www.hastingskickboxing.co.uk/kickstartnow YouTube https://www.youtube.com/user/Hastingskickboxing HKA Facebook page https://www.facebook.com/Hastingskickboxing Adult community link https://m.facebook.com/groups/274624209886110?ref=share carldenne@hotmail.com - Join Leigha every weekday for a workout for a fiver per month The 10X Rule - Grant Cardone The Motivated Martial Artists Podcast ABOUT THE HOST Hi, my name is Carl Denne. Carl is back talking to Jimmy the Flick who is now LFA world champion He is hoping it’s The golden ticket to the UFC after finishing the fight with a tremendous finish in round 1. It’s the second-fastest win in LFC history after Jimmy finished successfully in 38 seconds in the first round He takes us through the fight and discusses with Carl training, fight preparation, nutrition, making weight, fighting without a crowd and why it’s always about being on the offensive because its either kill or be killed in any fight. This is a great opportunity to hear from an ultimate professional who knows all about exactly what it takes to be the winner on fight night. KEY TAKEAWAYS Jimmy is known as a finisher with 7 finishes in the first round of his fight history. Every time I’m in there its kill or be killed. It’s always important to finish a fight rather than let it go to the judges. You need to have the right mindset and be 100% sure you have done everything needed. It’s all about the preparation and knowing you have trained hard so you can to get the job done. Train hard, fight easy, you have to put in the grind. I know what it’s like to win, I know what it’s like to lose and now I know what it’s like to fight with no fans and still be there giving it my all. I’ve evolved as a fighter all-round that why they call me ‘Jimmy the Brick’ I’ve been in the sport for a long time and I’ve proved I’m the best at 125’ I train so much so I have muscle memory when I’m in the fight, all the drilling and training means it comes naturally It’s better to be on the offensive and all in to win. BEST MOMENTS ‘I finished someone who’s never been finished in 38 seconds’ ‘We are both grapplers, I thought it would be more of a stand-up fight’ ‘I have a very strong grip when it’s locked up and that’s when he tapped’ ‘It was phenomenal to watch’ ‘I’m ready for the UFC experience’ VALUABLE RESOURCES HKA Main landing page www.hastingskickboxing.co.uk/kickstartnow YouTube https://www.youtube.com/user/Hastingskickboxing HKA Facebook page https://www.facebook.com/Hastingskickboxing Adult community link https://m.facebook.com/groups/274624209886110?ref=share carldenne@hotmail.com - Join Leigha every weekday for a workout for a fiver per month The Queensbury Boxing League ABOUT THE HOST Hi, my name is Carl Denne. In this heartfelt episode, Carl talks about what it’ s like being dyslexic sharing his school experiences and the impact it has on his life every day. Growing up with dyslexia brought challenges and Carl is very honest about his reaction and the consequences it brought for him throughout his years at school. Now his dyslexia continues to bring challenges but also means he can truly understand the youngsters he works with at gym who are also facing a range of challenges that mean life is tough for them. As a business owner, he now helps people deal with their challenges in life and is proof that being dyslexic and written off at school doesn’t mean you can’t be successful in life and business. KEY TAKEAWAYS Much as I try to remember how to spell a word I can’t. The words just disappear out of your brain. I’m reading what I think I’ve put not what I’ve actually put. When I was told to read out loud in class getting chucked out of class and detention was easier. For me, reading is like a phobia and I’m very scared of it. Dyslexia isn’t just about reading and writing it’s about numbers, how you see things and being situations. When I look at letters on a page they move about. Writing a sentence is hell. You get behind and then you just explode. I’m writing a book and for me, it’s about proving its possible. It’s a nearly impossible task but I’m proving that I can. We help people deal with life struggles, anxiety, bullying, losing weight. I can’t explain how tough it is if you are dyslexic to do what you want to do. I am proof that being written off at school doesn’t mean you can’t be successful in your life and business. BEST MOMENTS ‘When you can’t do it, you go from 0 to 100 and no one can stop you’ ‘That’s how I deal with it I run away as fast as possible’ ‘I’m able to understand the kids out there’ VALUABLE RESOURCES HKA Main landing page www.hastingskickboxing.co.uk/kickstartnow YouTube https://www.youtube.com/user/Hastingskickboxing HKA Facebook page https://www.facebook.com/Hastingskickboxing Adult community link https://m.facebook.com/groups/274624209886110?ref=share carldenne@hotmail.com - Join Leigha every weekday for a workout for a fiver per month ABOUT THE HOST Hi, my name is Carl Denne. Ross Minter former professional welterweight boxer is the co-founder of the Queensbury Boxing League and in this episode he shares his journey on why the Queensbury League is so important and how it supports its fighters. The stress of being a professional fighter is immense and it is important to find ways to look after your mental health which can be challenging when you are constantly training and trying to make weight. Carl and Ross discuss what they have learned and how sport can teach you all about yourself. KEY TAKEAWAYS In a fight, the winner is the winner and a loser is a loser, Queensbury is what boxing should be. The Queensbury Boxing League has given a new lease of life to fighters. Because it’s a league you are fighting against people who are comparable to you. It’s what you see at a pro-level for amateurs. The fight scene is a hard scene unless you have the right backing and support around you. You think that as a professional you will be being paid to fight but in reality it’s just a percentage of the ticket sales. If you are not properly promoted you will not get anything. In the Queensbury Boxing League, we care and are prepared to promote our fights extensively. Technique overrules a lot of other areas and if you are good technically then you can always move forward. You’d be amazed at how many people step back when a punch is thrown. You should be mindful of every moment of your life. When you are in the ring and hitting it’s the only thing you are focused on so having an opportunity to share your thoughts outside the ring is important. Training is a great way to help you to feel better mentally. In this episode, Carl shares a passionate response to someone who got in touch with him about how he is trying to make money with his new online female only kickboxing course. Carl explains why he does what he does and the work that goes on behind the scenes supporting those who need it – all of which couldn’t happen if the gym wasn’t operational and making money. There are always the things you don’t know about and Carl shares an insight into how and why HKA is firmly rooted in and serves the community every day. KEY TAKEAWAYS We are a business and yes we are trying to make money. We all have bills and commitments that we need to look after. I love what I do and that’s why I spend 2 hours a day checking in on people who are struggling. The better we do, the collectively the more we move forward. The more we can develop ourselves the better we can be for others. We make champions We build people’s confidence We turn people’s lives around We deal with low self-esteem We deal with domestic violence, anxiety and depression To enable us to do this the gym has to make money because it frees up my time to do better things for the greater good. If we get better everyone else gets better and that’s a good thing. I’ve started to re-educate myself because I want to be a better me. If I won the lottery I’d still be here because I love doing what I do. We are working hard and trying to do our best every day. I’ve lived through the pain and have worked with thousands of members, students, children, teachers and adults over the years, and the one thing I get told every time is how well I/we keep it very real, and that I have a complete understanding on most eventualities. Carl is with Dawn Willock from MAGB, UK’s leading Martial Arts Licence & Association Service. The values of Martial Arts – humility, honesty, integrity, adaptation, fluidity and kindness have never been more important as the world moves forward in a different way and Carl and Dawn discuss the importance of a voice that is heard and a positive unified message for Martial Arts. They also take a look at mental health, equality, perspective and making sure you have a purpose in this fascinating episode. KEY TAKEAWAYS Martial arts values are about honesty and humility and integrity. Adaptation, fluidity, kindness, warrior strength and inner confidence are attributes of those who are martial arts practitioners. Martial arts instructors need to understand the values and reflect them to each other and their students. Martial arts is a contact sport and a good way forward would be for there to be very specific guidelines so businesses can then open if they are able to meet the guidelines or remain closed if they are unable to. It’s really important for insurance and compliance that businesses are clear they can’t guarantee social distancing. My philosophy is either work together successfully or leave each other alone, but if you decide to come after me be sure you are better than me. I was brought up to expect equality and if I experience any resistance I assume it’s because I’m doing my job really well. Mindset is all about focus and if you focus on things that move you forward then your mindset is positive. If you are struggling to put things in perspective you should talk to someone in your trusted circle. BEST MOMENTS ‘I’d rather fail at something than not have tried doing it in the first place’ ‘Accountability and responsibility are part of my fearlessness’ ‘It’s important that martial arts has a voice’ VALUABLE RESOURCES HKA Main landing page www.hastingskickboxing.co.uk/kickstartnow YouTube https://www.youtube.com/user/Hastingskickboxing HKA Facebook page https://www.facebook.com/Hastingskickboxing Adult community link https://m.facebook.com/groups/274624209886110?ref=share carldenne@hotmail.com - Join Leigha every weekday for a workout for a fiver per month ABOUT THE HOST Hi, my name is Carl Denne. Carl is with Rob Moore, known as the disruptive entrepreneur his business has a turnover in excess of 20 million and he is the author of 15 best-selling books. They discuss where Rob gets his ideas from, the importance of failing on the journey to success and pushing outside your comfort zone. This is a great opportunity to hear about what it takes to not only achieve success but sustain it whilst continuing to add value and growth. KEY TAKEAWAYS I get my ideas when my mind is quiet and many things provide me with inspiration. You can hybridise ideas from different places. My biggest business fail was not starting earlier because I was brought up as an entrepreneur. I don’t believe in looking backwards, you can’t change the past only your perception of it so it’s about learning from it. You can’t succeed your way to success you have to go through failure on the way to success. It’s all about your attitude to both the wins and the losses, you have to honour the process. We all have our own version of upside and downside and everyone should be trying to be the best version of themselves. I love building things but contentment and fulfilment come from family and friendships. I’m pushing myself all the time to grow and get better, my desire for growth is an integral part of me. In life, many of us are trying to change other people into who we want them to be but a good relationship is based on an understanding that everyone is different. We are all just human beings working in different ways. Carl is in conversation with Dom who in 2015 set up Dom’s Food Mission. They take surplus and unwanted food items and redistribute it to those who are less fortunate. They discuss how the enterprise began, its journey to date and the generosity of people even when they are facing their own challenges. This is a great conversation that focuses on the kindness of people and how being kind is something everyone can be, it’s free and it could bring positive change to someone else’s life. KEY TAKEAWAYS We stop food going into landfill, redistributing it to those who need it because everyone deserves to eat. I started from the boot of my car and now 5 years on there is a team of around 20 people who are amazing. People are incredible and we have wonderful donations Dom’s was needed from day one more than I ever knew and in 2016 we applied to be a charity. You have to look at a charity as an end goal business because you always need funding. Being a charity is about transparency and having an open door and we make sure we target the most vulnerable. People are still helping and donating even though the lockdown has brought challenges for everyone. The Guild of food writers gold award in 2019 opened lots of new doors for us. We feed around 4,000 to 5,000 mouths per mouths. We are a surplus food charity and our core values are focused around this. You need planning and structure to run a charity effectively and achieve maximum impact We stop around 40 tonnes of food going to waste every year and I want to help more people across different towns. It’s something I’ve always wanted to do help others. BEST MOMENTS ‘We do around 850 drops per month’ ‘I want other people to see our vision’ ‘Everyone has got something inside of them and I just knew it was something I needed to do; it is my passion’ VALUABLE RESOURCES HKA Main landing page www.hastingskickboxing.co.uk/kickstartnow YouTube https://www.youtube.com/user/Hastingskickboxing HKA Facebook page https://www.facebook.com/Hastingskickboxing Adult community link https://m.facebook.com/groups/274624209886110?ref=share carldenne@hotmail.com - Join Leigha every weekday for a workout for a fiver per month Dom's Food Mission ABOUT THE HOST Hi, my name is Carl Denne. Carl is with Jimmy ‘The Brick’ Flick, MMA fighter based in the USA. They discuss what it takes to make it to the top and why it’s all about mindset, never quitting and always moving forward. Jimmy is someone who is dedicated to building his dream and looking after those he loves and as a successful pro-MMA fighter he is achieving everything he wants through hard work and dedication. KEY TAKEAWAYS My dedication comes from losing, I never want to be in that position so I train hard to make sure I can win the fights. Every fight I just try to do my best. I want to win clean and not leave it to the judges I’m known as the brick because I’m known as solid in all areas of fighting I work fulltime and train every day. I work in a variety of ways to give the best results It’s about putting in the grind every day with dedication. If you want to be at the top you have to put the work in every day. Everyone has to go through losing to understand what it takes to work through and get in a winning position. There is always an opportunity and always a chance because quitting is not an option. We are ready for the next big thing and I’m ready to take on and win in any fight with a flyweight. I don’t have to fight but I love doing it and helping others along the way.
