Our focus today is really about the vascularabdominal syndromes that we can see so prevalent in connective tissue disorders & complex conditions. Please get us started with a description of the anatomy of the abdomen, including the GI organs, but also the ligaments &connective tissue that holds these organs in place and the vasculature that feeds them oxygen & carries away metabolic wastes. Now, let's get into the syndromes that we wantto focus on today & we're going from the top down because that's how they might be unlocked, meaning closest to the heart to the most distant to the heart and in the pelvis, that's from chest to pelvis direction. a. MALS: median arcuate ligament syndromeb. SMAS: superior mesenteric artery syndrome(duodenal comp) (meat?)c. Nutcracker: renal vein compressiond. May Thurner: iliac vein compressione. Pelvic congestion syndromes including pelvicvenous insufficiency, vaginal/ labial varices For each we talk about: a. Symptomsb. Evaluation c. Treatment: ancillary tx? Visceral manipulation? What would a patient look for in a provider? Whois doing this care? How easy/ common are folks doing these treatments? Howoften can or do treatments go wrong? We end with discussing: where is research going with this? Looking back through the history of her medical challenges, it becomes painfully obvious that Tayler was born with the connective tissue disease EDS (Ehlers-Danlos Syndrome). Unfortunately, the lack of quality healthcare in her youth prevented this diagnosis for many years. She struggled physically throughout childhood, often being accused of laziness or being unwilling to participate, when in fact physical activity was more difficult, painful and dangerous for her than for her peers. Medical challenges often made her stand out, like her time spent in a back brace for scoliosis or her runaway heart rate in health class that led to a POTS diagnosis (postural orthostatic tachycardia syndrome) at 15 years old. Her EDS was constantly manifesting, screaming to be acknowledged, but doctor after doctor refused to take Tayler's complaints seriously. In this episode of the Major Pain podcast Tayler shares her remarkable health journey with us, eventually coalescing around her EDS diagnosis. The tumultuous road she has traveled includes many unexpected diagnostic detours, like septic arthritis, congenital muscular torticollis, visceroptosis, MALS and more, all conditions she teaches us about during this conversation. In the past year her GI issues have necessitated transitioning to an ostomy bag, and the ileostomy surgery led to unexpected complications that she will also share. Tayler found a creative outlet in crafting custom ostomy bags (found on her Etsy store). Since her ostomy bag gave her a second chance at living more fully, she likes to craft these bags out of second-hand materials found at thrift stores. Her experiences have given her a passion for helping others, working as a sign language interpreter and disability advocate. Thank you for joining us for our 2nd Cabral HouseCall of the weekend! I'm looking forward to sharing with you some of our community's questions that have come in over the past few weeks… Jenny: Hi Dr. Cabral, First, thank you to you and your amazing team for selflessly giving of your time and knowledge so we can all learn and grow on our health journeys. We can't really express this enough. I have a question about your Alkalizing Vitamin C product. You've recommended this as something to take in water upon waking, but could it also be effective when I add it to my morning smoothie or is it better to take separately? I don't enjoy the taste on its own, so I'm unlikely to drink it just in water. Any suggestions? Thanks! Kavita: Hello Dr. Cabral, First, I want to thank you for your amazing work! I listen to your podcast every day, which means I've been consistently listening for the past 3,231 days! :) I have an important question for you. I recently started taking Berberine, but a friend mentioned that it may have adverse reactions. She told me about her neighbor, who had to stop taking it because doctors wouldn't perform surgery on her while she was using Berberine. I'm unsure of the exact details, but it raised some concerns. I started taking Berberine because there's diabetes in my family, and I'm hoping to avoid getting on any medications as I move ahead in life. How do I make sure it is working for me? I hope this gets on your list soon :) Thank you, Kavita ( Pronounced - ka-vee-tha) Jenni: Hi, I've been battling Meibomian Gland Disorder for over a year. The only thing that has provided relief has been taking 50mg daily of doxycycline. I've been on this dosage for 10 months. My doctor has tried weaning me off, but the symptoms pop back up after 4-5 days. Nobody seems to understand why this issue arose suddenly, and no one can offer me help outside of antibiotics. Do you have any experience in helping patients with MGD? Could this be due to heavy metals, gut issues, systemic inflammation? I'm desperate for natural relief. Thank you, Jenni Michael: Hi Dr. Cabral. Thank you for the work you do and especially taking time to answer people's questions. My question is regarding to home oil as the main heating source. What are your thoughts on the cleanest and safest option? We currently have the standard heating oil. There is an option to change the oil to a B50 blend which consists of a 50/50 blend of standard heating oil and biodiesel. This would then convert to a B99 fuel which is 99% biodiesel. Any thoughts on this subject or know of a place I can go to research more? Thank you! Paedyn: Hi Dr Cabral, but of a hard to question. What are some ways I can naturally treat MALS (median arcuate ligament syndrome). I woke up randomly with stomach pain in my epigastric region one day out of nowhere and Dr's are saying it's this and that the only treatment option is very major surgery which only a select handful of surgeons perform this surgery worldwide and a lot of people end up worse off after the surgery. I just want to heal my body naturally. Thank you so much! Greg Cote is a casual NASCAR fan and Mike Ryan is fired up to talk with him about the very exciting finish to the season in the NASCAR playoffs. Unsurprisingly, Greg has an idea for how to change yet another sport. Stugotz has his Top 5 Mals of all time, but there's only four. Also, Norv Turner is back?! And Dana Holgorsen?! Plus, how many people have first and last names that could be both first and last names? Dan weighs in on Jason Kelce's apology before Monday Night Football for his incident with a heckler over the weekend, then Nick Wright joins the show to discuss Jawaan Taylor's right foot, the greatness of Patrick Mahomes, his crooked face and the election. Dianna Russini has an eye on 18 players and 13 teams at the Deadline and one of them is Za'Darius Smith, who is on the move from the Browns. Also, is every team terrible? Then, Dan gives us what could be one of the most outrageous takes in show history about Bill Russell and Greg Cote has some thoughts on the Dolphins close loss to the Bills. That leads to a very intense discussion about what merits a good win, a bad win, a good loss and a good win. Greg Cote even goes so far as to even propose a new way of judging football games beyond just wins and losses. Plus, Dominique Foxworth thinks the Bills were scared to hit Tua, the Cowboys are buyers, Penn State and LSU continue to get away with it and are we still making Mals? One way to look at today's guest is that if he were a zebra, he would have extra stripes because, unfortunately, he has more than one rare condition, which is a first for a guest in our Year of the Zebra series. After struggling with various GI issues most of his life, Brian Kennedy, an Elsevier colleague, was diagnosed several years ago with exocrine pancreatic insufficiency (EPI), a rare disorder that prevents the pancreas from playing its proper role in aiding digestion. At the same time, he was told he had MALS, another rare condition, that interferes with blood flow in the abdomen. Both of these disorders can cause chronic pain in addition to a host of other difficult symptoms. While it was a relief to finally have answers, Brian says it also sparked a long period of grief. “You start to realize your life is not going to go back to the way you had it, but you just have to accept it and then you sort of think about the things I can do and focus on those and not the things that I can't do anymore,” he tells host Michael Carrese. That shift in perspective and connecting with a community of other EPI and MALS patients has helped Brian to stay as positive as possible and focus on being as healthy as he can under the circumstances. Listen-in to learn about these challenging diseases, the therapy that is helping Brian eat without subsequent debilitating pain and his advice to providers about dealing with rare disease patients. This week, Heidi McCann shares her story and her experience caring for her partner Curtis after he was diagnosed with ALS at 25. Heidi shares how she and Curtis met as teenagers in Vermont and maintained their relationship through college before Curtis began exhibiting symptoms of ALS. When he was diagnosed, Heidi left her job to care for Curtis full-time. She moved with him to his small hometown to be closer to his support system and cared for him over the next year as his condition deteriorated. Heidi and Curtis married 22 days before his passing to declare their commitment to one another. After Curtis' death, Heidi found new love and purpose, going on to write a book about her caregiving journey of living with and preparing for the death of her partner from ALS. She married again and became a mother of four children. Heidi also now cares for her own mother, who has Parkinson's disease. Throughout the episode, Heidi emphasized the importance of self-care for caregivers and making future plans for support systems. She shares lessons learned from her extensive personal experience of caring for a terminally ill partner through the challenges of ALS. About Heidi: Born in Hartford, CT, Heidi Erdmann Vance McCann graduated from the Loomis Chaffee School, where she discovered the power of words. Observing humanity from a young age, her high school years shaped her voice and leadership skills. At Middlebury College, she refined her writing and athletic prowess. After working in development and coaching tennis, she cared for her boyfriend with ALS, ultimately founding a nonprofit in his honor after his passing at age 26. Over time, Heidi remarried and earned a MALS degree with a concentration in creative writing from Dartmouth College. She returned to the development field at Loomis Chaffee, where she currently works and enjoys tutoring. Living in Simsbury, CT, with her husband, Paul, and their four children - Martha, Ava, Caroline, and James - along with their dogs, Bruin and Bauer, Heidi treasures family time. Setting aside an hour daily for physical activity, she often finds inspiration for future books during this time. Support the Show. She shares lessons learned from her extensive personal experience of caring for a terminally ill partner through the challenges of ALS.About Heidi:Born in Hartford, CT, Heidi Erdmann Vance McCann graduated from the Loomis Chaffee School, where she discovered the power of words. Observing humanity from a young age, her high school years shaped her voice and leadership skills. At Middlebury College, she refined her writing and athletic prowess. After working in development and coaching tennis, she cared for her boyfriend with ALS, ultimately founding a nonprofit in his honor after his passing at age 26.Over time, Heidi remarried and earned a MALS degree with a concentration in creative writing from Dartmouth College. Setting aside an hour daily for physical activity, she often finds inspiration for future books during this time.Support the Show.Confessions of a Reluctant Caregiver Sisterhood of Care, LLC Website: www.confessionsofareluctantcaregiver.com Like us on Facebook! Today's episode is one of the most touching stories we've ever told on the podcast. Today, I have the extreme privilege of sharing the full story of Easton Allred. If you're not familiar with Easton, he was one of the best high school runners of his era. He ran PRs of 4:05.67 (Mile) and 8:58 (2-Mile at altitude). As a sophomore in high school, he placed 22nd at NXN and returned his junior year to place fifth behind legends like Nico Young and Cole Hocker. He won back-to-back team UHSAA 6A Cross Country State Championships (2018-19). Easton then went on to compete for BYU while he battled his health struggles. He ran 13:45 in the 5k and 4:04 in the Mile during his short time competing there. As his running career progressed, Easton started to experience severe health issues such as extreme nausea, anxiety, and more. After seeing dozens of doctors, he was found to have an anatomical disorder known as MALS. The syndrome involves compression of vital arteries branching from the aorta. This compression damages the nerves, causing them to send scrambled signals to the brain, which are interpreted as intense nausea and anxiety. Today's episode was moving beyond words, and I get emotional just thinking about all that Easton has gone through and overcome. In this episode, Easton goes through his full story and all that he has gone through and overcome. He walks me through all the ups and downs of his life, and the meaning behind it all. I can't stress this enough: take the time to listen to today's conversation. It will move you. Lastly, please share this episode with a friend who you think will benefit from hearing Easton's story. You can listen wherever you find your podcasts by searching, "The Running Effect Podcast." Unterwegs spricht man Schweizerdeutsch, Rätoromanisch, Südtirolerisch.

HOW DO WE MAKE THE MOST OF OUR OPPORTUNITY AS PARENTS? On this episode we are joined by Nate Turner. Nate is a TED Speaker, multi time author, and the opportunity he is most grateful for, a father. On this episode we discuss: Helping your child find their purpose What you should do when you find out you will be a parent Preparing your child for whatever they desire to accomplish in life For places to listen, places to connect on social media, to be a guest, collaborate with or sponsor DTE visit: https://linktr.ee/DisruptTheEveryday Nate's website: https://www.nathanielaturner.com/ About Nate Author and TED speaker Nathaniel A. Turner, JD, MALS, is a self-described “Humanity Propulsion Engineer.” Nate is the author of several books, including the children's book series, “The Amazing World of STEM,” and his history-making book, “Raising Supaman.” Turner's appeared in many media outlets, including The Washington Post, Black Enterprise, iHeartRadio, The Good Men Project, Sirius XM, and U.S. News & World Report. Corporations, municipalities, and NGOs like Anthem, Inc., the National Collegiate Athletic Association, the City of Indianapolis, and the National Society of Black Engineers invite Nate to share his practical message for living the life we've always imagined while also serving the greater good. A modern-day Renaissance Man, as evidenced by the diversity of his education, including a bachelor in accounting, masters in history and theology, and doctor of jurisprudence combined with a wide range of personal experiences and professions, are only part of what makes his wide-ranging presentations “can't miss” events. What truly sets Nate apart from others is his unique oft times comical ability not only to see the world differently but to challenge his audiences in an edutaining way to live outside the box so that the world might be able to experience us at our very best. As a zealous advocate that every person has an opportunity to maximize their human potential, Nate regularly shares through books, courses, workshops, and conferences a backward design life process initially created to help his unborn child become a great global citizen and meet the rigorous educational requirements of the top colleges and universities without means of wealth, privilege, legacy status, fraud, bribery, cheating or Adobe Photoshop. Turner's son not only met Harvard's admission benchmarks (i.e., test scores in the top 1%, 33 college credits by his junior year, proficiency in four languages, left home after his junior year to play soccer in Brazil; and started a foundation to address teen homelessness); he eviscerated the profiled criterion by his sixteenth birthday. At present, Turner's son is a third-year Electrical and Computer Engineering Ph.D. candidate at one of the world's premier graduate engineering schools. Today, those tools, techniques, and strategies initially created to help his Gen Zer thrive in the Fourth Industrial Revolution are educational and life development staples for students and parents of all ages and organizations worldwide.
