For this episode I interviewed Norah Spades and Jitterbug James of the band “The Vaudevillian”. The Vaudevillian are a two-piece band covering 1930's ragtime/blues/jug and/hokum songs, and I caught up with them at their recent performance at The Village of Riverside Glen. Today's episode features a live recording from their show and a short interview where they share their origin stories, the hustle and grind of busking life that they started in and where they're headed now. They played this year's Hillside Festival, their official Hillside set was 12:15 on Sunday July 21st at the Lake Stage, and they also led some workshops throughout the weekend (including Norah's workshop on how to play washboard). This interview was originally recorded on July 10, 2024 This is a public episode. 5 Cs of History: Complexity, #2 of 4. Josephine Baker's life story - both what we know and what we don't/can't know - is fascinating. For our purposes today, her life story is a perfect case study for complexity in historical thinking. Not only was she an icon of contradictions, but the way she lived and interacted with the world has allowed historians and feminist scholars to really tease out the complexity of her lifetime. Josephine Baker lived from 1906 until 1975. She was both a Civil Rights activist and a performer who used blackface and racialized tropes to entertain. She was both a woman who had intimate (probably sexual) relationships with other women, and exiled an adopted son when he came out to her as gay. She was both a deeply private woman and opened her home to the public like an amusement park. And for most of her life she lived in France, which was both deeply enamored with Black American culture and music and deeply racist. As Josephine Baker shows us, historical moments, like life stories, are rarely simple. There's lots of chat on this week's episode but fear not, we do eventually get to this week's song! Lots of discussion about wurlitzers, lyric sheets, Yamaha baby grands... you obviously know why! Randy also educates Kev on where bass players come from before marching his heels to the sea. Jerry Lewis was born Jerome Joseph Levitch on March 16th, 1926 in Newark, New Jersey. His father was a Vaudevillian and his mother was a pianist for WOR. By fifteen, Lewis had developed a "Record Act", miming lyrics to songs while a phonograph played offstage. To supplement his income he worked as a soda jerk at the Paramount Theater while he honed his act. In 1943, Lewis met singer Dino Paul Crocetti thanks to Frank Sinatra's mother Dolly. They became friends. Dino Crocetti was born on June 7th, 1917 in Steubenville, Ohio. He spoke only Italian until age five, got bullied for his broken English in school, and eventually dropped out in the tenth grade. By fifteen Crocetti had bootlegged liquor, worked in a steel mill, served as a croupier at a speakeasy, and was a welterweight boxer. Boxing got him, among other things, a broken nose and a scarred lip. He'd later get the nose fixed. Dino then worked as a roulette stickman in an illegal casino behind a tobacco shop, and started singing with local bands, calling himself "Dino Martini." By late 1940 he had begun singing for Cleveland bandleader Sammy Watkins, who suggested he change his name to Dean Martin. In the fall of 1943 he'd begun performing in New York, but was drafted into the military during World War II. Dean served fourteen months before being discharged due to a hernia. Although they were friends for more than a year, Dean and Jerry didn't officially team up until debuting at Atlantic City's 500 Club as Martin and Lewis on July 25th, 1946. The highlights of their act included Lewis heckling Martin while he was trying to sing, which ultimately led to them chasing each other around the stage. People loved their improvisational style. And Lewis knew that Martin was his comic equal. Martin and Lewis' success at the 500 Club led to a series of well-paying engagements along the Eastern Seaboard, culminating with a run at New York's Copacabana Club. Almost overnight, the two were the biggest smash hit in clubs across the country.

Ladies n Genminminminmin (er min...) welcome BACK - for a second pass through the Good Listening To "Clearing" - this time with even better sound - the warm, wonderful and absolute comic genius that is "Tweedy The Clown" from Gifford's Circus! A special interview complete with "Keef - the Pet Rescue Iron!" for company!Ohhhhh yes! Alan Tweedy Digweed aka "Tweedy the Clown" is a true comic genuis in the Stan Laurel 'Vaudevillian' styley. Me and my extended Fam-Squad have been going along to see him in Gifford's Circus for the last 17 of their 21 years of existence. Tweedy is always at their heart as the warm & wonderful comic centrepiece that he is!A source of great joy, for me he is a living personification of Stan Laurel which is why I adore him so much!A wonderful converation indeed riffing on all things comedy,  slapstick & Vaudeville!More about Tweedy:Alan ‘Tweedy' Digweed was born to be a Clown. He was born small and hung onto his childhood a lot longer than most. He did not go through puberty until he was in his late teens, by which time he had learned to make people laugh since his early school days, as an effective coping mechanism. He was inspired by a generation of silent comics in black and white movies on TV. Legends like Laurel and Hardy, Buster Keaton and Harold Lloyd were later joined in real life by lesser known local stars like Johnny Hutch and Barry Grantham. Alan Digweed was at Art School learning animation when he realised he did not want to draw the character, he want to be the character. He decided to try his luck in show business. Panto provided Alan with his first opportunities to make members of the public laugh at his antics. Then his first clowning job was for Zippo's Circus but as a publicity clown not in the big top itself. The name ‘Weedy' was already taken so Alan took the name ‘Tweedy' acknowledging his Scottish heritage. Tweedy learned his traditional Clown-craft over 8 years at Zippo's before joining Gifford's Circus where he has been for the last 16 years developing his own unique character and style, celebrating his inner child, with the aid of an iron called Keef which he rescued from a wardrobe rubbish bin. Tweedy's strange signature hair is the result of a visual gag that went wrong! At each show Tweedy fell into a birthday cake and stayed there to keep the laughter going. On this occasion his hair caught fire without him even realising it at first. When he did, he spontaneously used the cake itself to put the fire out! Improv meets Health and Safety with a smile... Tweedy is a fascinating multi-faceted character who has been described as “the Mark Rylance of Clowns” which is praise indeed. This is a weird and wonderful episode which gets beneath the traditional facade of circus clowning and provides priceless insights into its rich history and heritage. Smile! You'll feel better for it, guaranteed".Reg StarkeyEditor - Health Triangle Magazine.Enjoy!“The Good Listening To: Your Life & Times With Me Chris Grimes!” is the Show & Podcast series that features “The Clearing” (or 'Serious Happy Place' of your choosing)The Clearing is where all good Questions come to be asked - and all good Stories come to be told…Think 'Desert Island Discs' but in a Clearing - and with Stories rather than Music! With some lovely juicy Storytelling metaphors to also enjoy along the way:The Clearing itself - a Tree - a lovely juicy Storytelling exercise called “5-4-3-2-1” - some Alchemy - some Gold - a couple of random Squirrels - a cheeky bit of Shakespeare - and a CAKE!So it's all to play for! Hurrah!(…and indeed Huzzah!)Enjoy!

This podcast is slightly shorter than most because as it turns out there is a documentary on Sam done by a relative of his. And rather than give you ALL the details of his life, I gave you a quick overview and am going to provide a link to the documentary so you can see that as well. Ladies n Genmin'  welcome to a particularly special Episode of a "GLT with me CG!"Please welcome to the "Good Listening To Clearing" a comedy hero of mine:"Tweedy the Clown" from the wonderful and magical Gifford's Circus! My entire extended family - a squad of 9 of us - have been going to Gifford's Circus for the last 17 of their 20 year history, normally during their late Summer residency at Minchinhampton Common, always as a thoroughly enjoyable and significant marker of "another year passed".Tweedy the Clown, with his pet iron "Keef" and his dispensing of lollies c/o his iconic "I've got a lo-lly!" ("You've not got one! You're such a loo-ser!")  song - along with his extraordinary repetoire of comic business has always been the absolute 'centre-piece' for us all. This year has been particularly poignant in the history of Gifford's Circus. Founder Nell Gifford sadly passed away at the very end of last year - even before the extra extra challenge of the Pandemic itself - but thankfully her legacy and the story of Gifford's looks set to continue.Tweedy is a true "Vaudevillian" and clown in the Stan Laurel style, which is why I was particularly keen and happy to talk to him!Enjoy!Tweedy's "Clearing" - reassuringly and quite right too - is the Circus arena itself, where all the magic, alchemy & gold is dispensed.Tweedy shares his story and journey of  how he came to clowning - and subsequently to Gifford's Circus itself.Plus his story of how a fire in the middle of a 'comedy cake routine' led to his iconic red tuft of hair scorching into being, as Tweedy found his "true clown".Enjoy! And thank you for listening to a "GLT with me CG!"If you'd like to find out more, then please do check out my websites www.secondcurve.uk + www.instantwit.co.uk - and there's also a dedicated "Good Listening To" Facebook Group c/o the link above.Plus if you'd be interested in the experience of being given "a damn good listening to" yourself, or you'd like to explore the idea of some Personal Impact Coaching from me CG - to help level-up your confidence, communication, and personal impact c/o my online Coaching proposition: The Second Curve "Zoom Room" - then, by all means, do get in touch via any of the usual social media channels (see above) or you can email me at chris@secondcurve.uk (The Second Curve "Zoom Room": Coaching to get you to the next level - or Clarity on how to get to "where next?")

Today on Let's Talk About Brand, we're talking about personal branding with Katie and Mario Marchese. Mario is better known as Mario the Maker Magician. He has been a magician for over 15 years, and he really breaks the mold!Mario has been called “the greatest children's magician in the world” by magician David Blaine, who he's also toured the world with. He has taught his own special brand of Maker Magic to Murray the Muppet on Sesame Street. He has also done a whole ton of live programming with Make Magazine. Normally, he's touring all over the place with his family and his co-adventurer, Katie Marchese. Katie, in addition to being Mario's wife and keeping their personal life going, is also his manager, his co-adventurer, road trip buddy, and they've got their kids in on the action too!Mario and Katie had been touring all over the country until March, when the pandemic abruptly canceled all performances. However, they've been able to continue their show in a different way. They've been broadcasting from their home, where they've designed a set in their very own attic! The traditional image of a children's magician would probably include a tux, top hat, and a black cape with red lining. However, Mario has created his own aesthetic, which has a punk rock, steampunk, Vaudevillian feel. In a cover piece for MUM Magazine, writer Chloe Olewitz summed Mario up perfectly as, “magic's punk rock Peter Pan philosopher.” This episode was broadcast as a livestream on September 25, 2020. With imagination at its core, the theatrical flair and intriguing nature of their songwriting has grasped the attention of music lovers from the most critical of music elitists to the average radio listener. Although performing frequently at festivals and pop culture fandom, goth/horror, & steampunk conventions, the musical menagerie is widely known for their own extravagant Vaudevillian inspired sold-out spectacles such as 'A Clockwork Wonderland: Through Aether & Mysterium' (whose live video for 'Utopian Playland' won 'Best Performance Video' at Radio KSCR's Music Video Awards),MOV has composed and licensed music for a variety of film projects & television shows such as the syndicated series 'Charmed' & Showtime Network’s hit series 'Dexter'. At the turn of the 1900’s, two years after a quiet murder involving an out-of-town stage actor and a local doctor’s daughter, an esteemed Opera House welcomes a progressive Vaudevillian troupe from the East for its first performances since the tragedy; and along with it, a veiled actress with a curious intent. With tensions still thick surrounding past events, this mysterious performer discovers she isn’t the only one seeking revenge: someone or something has been “haunting” the assailant already. When the two conspirers uncover each other’s secrets, they decide their dual efforts will be more successful in subduing their enemy. THE RIOT ACT is a multi-award winning independent film that deftly immerses audiences in a layered tale of a caste system on the brink of violence where humanity and love are expendable in the eyes of society in the early 1900’s.  Following a wildly successful festival and theatrical run, the film will be available to audiences everywhere on October 8th, 2019. The feature film directorial debut from auteur writer / director Devon Parks (Step Into: Miss Laura’s, The Help), THE RIOT ACT stars Lauren Sweetser (True Detective, Winter’s Bone), Brett Cullen (Joker, 42, Dark Knight Rises), Connor Price (Cinderella Man), Micah Hauptman (Homeland, Rust Creek), Brandon Keener (Traffic, The Purge: Anarchy) and Travis Joe Dixon (NCIS, Blackish).  Director and writer Devon Parks joins us to talk about his intriguing mystery period piece, the he orchestrates from a very talented group of actors. Come, listener friends (aka Kathleen and Kathleen only), and sit in our meadow filled with over-excitable sheep as we absolutely 100% do not bring up Toby Keith again. Or any other 90s-era country star, for that matter! OK, frankly we do--but we also discuss injuries we’ve sustained in normal and not weird ways, the logic traps/Vaudevillian-esque comedy acts of children, and get unexpectedly deep after a teensy mention of Game of Thrones. Our duel this week is FAVORITE THINGS BEGINNING WITH THE LETTER H -- and it’s a truly fantastic voyage. There is an actual winner this week, also! We didn’t even have to text Alicia *twinkly noise* to fight our battles for us! Do you think horseshoe crabs found favor with us? LISTEN TO FIND OUT. Takeaway quote: “Wouldn’t it be a humpFRONT?” Amendment: God, Kristin was so wrong. Just in time for the longest UK bank holiday weekend of the year, your intrepid explorers at Finders Keepers Records bring you an epic elongated bumper episode of our regular radiophonic rare record rundown including approximately 50% extra absolutely free! This time the tangled topic of rock operas, mutant musicals and psychedelic stage shows is discussed, dissected and defended by regular hosts Andy Votel, Pete Mitchell and Doug Shipton who will be joined by a crooked chorus line including regular Keepers cottage pop patron Jane Weaver, TV's "Toast" main maestro Matt Berry, Cambrofuturist Gruff Rhys and Twisted Nerve co-founder Badly Drawn Boy (as well as the usual musings of a certain slimy crolyn cestodaria). This show is served best with an open mind and closed captioning bringing foreign language rip-offs of West End repeaters, creep show cash-ins and holiday season sequels - not forgetting token doses of horrotica, bastardised ballet and Popera Cosmic anti-classics. Marvel as your hosts play expensive Japanese cross-dresser psych sing-alongs while discussing Chitty Chitty Bang Bang standards sung by stars of adult entertainment! Relax to the sound of Minimoog movements that soundtrack the Messiah meeting The Mafia. And celebrate the annual eggsploitation vacation while our combined edutainers mention the words "Jesus", “Christ” and "Superstar" over 76 times! For listeners who aren't too high-brow to compare the work of Jodorowsky and Lloyd-Webber and think that The Wickerman should have been a Vaudevillian blockbuster then this one is for you... and if not, "Dammit, Janet!" Anything you can do, we can do... odder?
