Walk up to sentimentality but don't become it. -- Larry Sultan If you like something that someone is doing, tell them! -- Todd Hido In this episode, Antonio kicks things off with a hands-on review of the Fujifilm X-M5, a compact, feature-packed mirrorless camera that's quickly become a favorite. He shares his impressions after testing it during the Lunar New Year celebrations in Chinatown, highlighting its speedy autofocus, convenient film simulation dial, and the nostalgic charm of the silver-top design. While the lack of a viewfinder presents some challenges in bright conditions, Antonio praises the camera's versatility—especially when paired with manual lenses and a fun little retro flash he recently picked up. Two thumbs up! Ward recounts a recent encounter with acclaimed photographer Todd Hido, who visited Calgary for a public talk. Ward recounts Hido's approachable, candid style and reveals some interesting behind-the-scenes tricks, like using glycerin on windshields for a rain-soaked effect. They discuss the emotional depth of Hido's work and the compelling presentation of his new book The End Sends Advance Warning, with its large-format images and translucent family-photo insert. The episode wraps with Ward's recap of his trip to Daytona for the 24-hour endurance race, where he had rare access to pit lane and behind-the-scenes action. Armed with a telephoto lens borrowed from Antonio, Ward describes the challenges of capturing high-speed cars at night, with the blur of headlights and motion adding an artistic dimension to the shots. He shares how the event's unique lighting conditions pushed his ISO settings to their limits and gave him a chance to experiment with different shutter speeds and compositions. From sleek Ferraris under the lights to candid moments in the pits, Ward reflects on the thrill of documenting a world where precision and speed are everything—both on and off the track. Chariot racing was a dangerous and violent sport at the best of times, but on 13th January, 532, a hooligan-led protest at the Hippodrome of Constantinople - known as ‘the Nika rebellion' - ultimately lead to over 30,000 deaths and the destruction of half the City. Upon hearing his wife urge him that ‘royalty is a good burial shroud', the Emperor Justinian reportedly decided to slaughter his own people to maintain his position of power. Yet, despite this, he was ultimately deemed to have earned his epithet: ‘The Great'. In this episode, Arion, Rebecca and Olly unearth the tradition of ‘curse tablets'; explain why Empress Theodora switched allegiances from the ‘greens' to the ‘blues'; and reveal how a eunuch wielding gold coins helped to stabilise the Byzantine empire… Further Reading: • ‘Overview of the Nika Revolt' (ThoughtCo, 2019): https://www.thoughtco.com/the-nika-revolt-1788557 • Deadly Moments in History - The Nika Riots (Invicta, 2018): https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Dm9mscL2qHU • ‘12 Historic Little Known Rebellions with Tragic and Bloody Ends' (History Collection, 2017): https://historycollection.com/12-historic-little-known-rebellions-tragic-bloody-ends/9/ ‘Why am I hearing a rerun?' White men have a lot to answer for. Now don't get all Jordan Peterson on me and say "NOT ALL WHITE MEN!" No, not all, but damn well enough! And certainly historically. But is it a good idea for rock stars to tackle serious subjects? And how does Brian do with this one? It's back to back Bri and this week's episode is full of Stampeders and Carneys. Kev also gives an update on the upcoming Queen World Cup!If Randy were to title this episode, he'd probably call it "Don't you see the light behing your blackened skies" or possibly "White man builds a big fire and sits far way. Native man builds a small fire and sits close"Today's episode means we've now covered half of A Day At The Races. It's time for Brian's screed against colinialism, "White Man"NOTE: Skip forward to 18:13 if wanna get straight into the manifestations and wheel spin. The song featured at the end of this week's episode is Fyah Dey, by Randy's good pal Oral Fuentes. As we close in on June 27, Primary Day in New York City, we continue our look at some of the most competitive City Council races. This week, we head to eastern Queens in District 23, where there is a highly competitive race in which the incumbent Linda Lee is facing criticism from her challengers for voting in favor of cutting the school budget last year. Up in the Bronx in District 13, Marjorie Velazquez looks to hold on to her seat, while facing some serious opposition in the general election due to issues around the controversial Bruckner rezoning. NY1 political reporter Emily Ngo has been closely covering these races. She joined Errol Louis for an in-depth look at the approaching primaries. They touched on the contests both in District 23 and District 13, including the highly competitive Republican primary in the 13th District, as well as the emergence of many Asian Americans running for office. They also discussed the debate around specialized high school testing and test prep. ANOTHER song from A Day At The Races! This time it's the mid-tempo, twelve-string, Brian May track, Long Away. There may be a little more swearing in this episode than usual because the boys had both had two or three beers before they even turned the mics on! Nonethless, they will regale you with keen insights, witty anecdotes, and the use of expensive words such as "juxtaposition" and less expensive ones, like "beer". Thanks to everyone who tuned in to the last episode and left us some comments on Twitter! We'll always try to answer any questions you have and seriously appreciate any corrections you make to anything we get wrong. And thanks so much for all your support as usual. We're loving diving into the Queen fandom a little more deeply as much as we're enjoying recording the podcasts!Huge thanks to Corey Morrissette and Mark Camire for letting us copy and paste the format from their gold-standard podcast, And the Podcast Will Rock. It's the fantastic drowse of another episode folks! Kev is back and he's not happy that Randy is trying to take over!!! The boys get another Roger track and the third song they've covered so far from 1985's titanic A Day At The Races. Randy talks about the production on this one, Kev makes a comparison with the Kinks and the boys split their vote. Also, Kev's a little bit swearier than usual because he had a couple of beers before starting to record. Thanks to everyone who tuned in to the last episode and left us some comments on Twitter!
