Take a closer look at Queen's epic song with John and Stewart. With aggressive guitars, rich vocal harmonies, and an over-the-top premise, the track is classic Queen. Ogre Battle also marks a pivotal moment in the band's evolution, as their recordings reached a new level under the guidance of producer Roy Thomas Baker.

After a development cycle spanning almost a decade, Unicorn Overlord released in March of 2024 to the joy of Ogre Battle fans everywhere! Two of those fans, namely Bryan and Josh, picked up the game and dug right in. With Vanillaware's signature art and polish on full display Unicorn Overlord makes a stunning first impression and backs it up with an incredibly deep and complex battle system which is fitting for the titles which inspired it. It has been over 25 years since Ogre Battle 64 released for the Nintendo 64, and while Unicorn Overlord does not reach the narrative heights of Ogre Battle or Tactics Ogre, it certainly has enough going for it that folks craving a real time tactical RPG will have plenty to sink their teeth into. So pour yourself a mug of ale and sit down beside the fire with Bryan and Josh as they discuss their experience leading a revolution in Unicorn Overlord!Three Word Reviews:Bryan - Tinkering Against TyrannyJosh - Somehow Too Much

Randy's having problems with his issues, whatever the hell that means! And he still won't quite raggin' on poor Kev about the Shepherd's Pie debacle. Bastard! We're goin' deep into fantasy this week and we've already had one duster from Randy for a proggier flight of fancy from Brian, way back in Episode two (oops, spoiler alert), but will he risk incurring Kev's wrath and dust this one too??? He is a man who, by his own admission, would kill for a Nobel Peace Prize... And to think, we knew him before he became notorious, and then curiously decorated! If Randy were to title this episode, he'd probably call it "Two way mirror mountain" or possibly, "I wonder who played gong on this track..."Today's episode covers the monstrous opening to Side Black of Queen II, "Ogre Battle".NOTE: Skip forward to 31:08 if wanna get straight into the manifestations and wheel spin. Hello! And welcome to the sixth season of Retrograde Amnesia, where we're covering the original release of Final Fantasy Tactics and The War of the Lions. In the opening, information-loaded episode, we're determining who is playing which version, ignoring Tactics Advance, pronouncing “Ivalice,” buying the mobile version, leaving Quest en masse, framing Tactics as another attempt at an Ogre, adding a sense of swashbuckling heroism, valuing 60fps, calling Matsuno for help, canceling a sequel, listening to commercials, reading old game magazines, applying elite hacks, hot-seating a past playthrough, getting lost in the Epic Center, relating Ogre Battle to IVF, and spawning Chris' origin story. On this episode of Random Encounter, we're looking at two very different kinds of follow-ups to beloved games: a spiritual successor and a fan game.First up, we're talking about a long-awaited revival of Ogre Battle-style SRPGs with Vanillaware's Unicorn Overlord (the most bizarre name for a game since Triangle Strategy). Featuring a mix of real-time strategy, turn-based party combat, and overworld exploration, Unicorn Overlord really hit the sweet spot for Josh. Is it a game for everyone, though? And the overwhelming amount of fan content inspired by 2015's Undertale finally reaches its logical culmination with an incredible fan game that actually has the blessing of creator Toby Fox: Undertale Yellow. A prequel that follows the story of a previous soul who fell into the underground, Yellow delivers an experience that doesn't just live up to its inspiration but surpasses it in some ways. Aleks' feature, Undertale Yellow Feels Like a Legit Prequel, not only brings attention to this incredible labor of love, but also helped to open his eyes to the potential of fan games!Featuring: Jono Logan, Joshua Lindquist, and Aleks Franiczek; Edited by Jono LoganGet in Touch:RPGFan.comRPGFan ShopEmail us: podcast@rpgfan.comTwitter: @rpgfancomInstagram: @rpgfancomFacebook: rpgfancomTwitch: rpgfancomThis Episode's Related Links:Ogre Battle: The March of the Black Queen ReviewUnicorn Overlord ReviewUndertale Yellow Feels Like a Legit PrequelUndertale Review

On today's IGN The Fix: Games, Elden Ring players have discovered a quick and easy way to defeat Starscourge Radahn, one of the game's toughest bosses. The famed Red Lion seemingly shares the fear of most cats as drawing him towards the water in his boss arena causes Radahn to defeat himself. Nintendo has announced a free update for Metroid Dread and has added Boss Rush and other new modes. Players can take on bosses one after another in Boss Rush and, while missiles will be replenished after each battle, any damage taken will continue into the next fight. Square Enix has filed a trademark for Tactics Ogre: Reborn alluding to rumors a two-decade-old fan-loved series is set to return. Ogre Battle is a classic strategy RPG series with its first game in 1993 with Ogre Battle: The March of the Black Queen for SNES, with the most recent entry being 2010's PSP Tactics Ogre: Let Us Cling Together. Narz has it all on Today's Daily Fix!

We also talk a bit about some new games outside the genre such as Little Nightmares 2 and Metroid Dread. Our actions per minute may be limited, but the laughs per minute are as plentiful as ever! OK maybe that was a bit cheesy. Also, if you were curious on the current state of Long John Silvers, we've got you covered - enjoy!

This week on Axe of the Blood God, Nadia, Kat, and Eric battle ogres with the help of a very special guest, Waah! Yes, our generous $100 Patron finally gets to shine on-stage, and he's picked a very cool topic: Square Enix's half-forgotten Ogre Battle series. This still-beloved string of strategy games was the precursor to Final Fantasy Tactics, and it's a darn shame it doesn't garner the acknowledgement it deserves. We'll fix that, though. Oh, we will definitely fix that. Also in this episode: Stardew Valley's creator is taking us to the Land of Chocolate, CD Projekt Red has some more delays for us, and the Mass Effect 3 ending controversy has reared its ugly, exhausting head once again.

John Bought - NES remix Wii U, Super Star Wars Empire Strikes Back SNES, Pocket Bomberman GB, Ogre Battle 64, and both Ori games on Switch Dan Played - Cyberpunk, Plok (The price is RETRO) (Crossplay)Megaman 6 Discussion Gameplay Bosses Community reactionMarty: Playing through Mega Man 6 reminds me how weird it is, almost as much of a sore thumb from the rest of the series as 1 is. Lots of new mechanics they tried (no Rush, real/fake Boss Gates, Energy Balancer, Jet Pack and Power Pack.) After 5 it's almost too easy.   Adr0ck: Mega Man 1 was quite enjoyable and just about as good as I remembered. Mega Man 6 is a mixed bag for me. I consider myself a pretty seasoned gamer, and I played and beat most of these games as a kid, but the boss battles in 6 are just way too difficult, to the point that I simply give up out of frustration and boredom instead of wanting to push to beat them. I really can't wait to go through Mega Man 2 and 3 again as those are my favorites.   SpiderShan: Not sure if I replied in time but my experience with MM 1 and MM6 is that I feel like the platforming has improved a lot over the course of the NES games. I still “died” a lot in MM6 (thank you save states!) but it didn’t feel as cheap when I did. I felt like the deaths were more my fault than a bad level design. On the other hand, I struggled more on the robot masters at the end of each stage in MM6 than MM1, even when using the “right” weapon against them. Not sure if they were just tougher or if it was just me.   Bryan:Mega Man 6: I do not like it so much. :grinning:I’ve got 4-5 bosses defeated. It just doesn’t slap like MM2 does.I’m playing on 3DS which doesn’t have rewind. It does have save states though and I save state sometimes after every successful enemy kill/encounter, or at least every cleared screen.   Roll the dice for next week   (break)   (Old News)  Nintendo Wood Carvings  https://www.etsy.com/uk/shop/Pigminted (Community Questions) Andross:   Do you prefer 2D or 3D for nintendo's other big franchises? Aka Mario, legend of Zelda, Kirby,  pokemon, donkey kong, kid icarus?   If you could revive any IP from the dead and have a next gen game made using it, what would it be? And why would you pick it?    Third Strongest Mole: Q for the show:  I haven't played hardly any sega games.  I see the various Sega classic collections go on sale from time to time, which one should I start with? (note: I don't really care for Sonic the hedgehog).   JasonLee: What % of your playtime is spent on retro games? I’d say probably 15% for me. I normally have 5-6 games in my rotation but I always make sure one of them is a retro game. Currently it’s Mario’s Super Picross. I’ve gotten so much out of the NES/SNES Switch online games. I love that service. And yeah, I wish they’d add more games to it.   (Outro) Thanks for listening to RetroLogic! The official podcast of Block Fort Retro. Ultima Final Fantasy | The Ultimate Final Fantasy Podcast

Spotlight: Yasumi Matsuno   Now that we’ve officially in the Tactics run of the Ivalice era, I figured that now would be a good time to shine a little light on a huge force behind the scenes of the Tactics games: Video Game Designer, Director, and Producer, one with an absolutely stellar career: Yasumi Matsuno.   Yasumi Matsuno was born October 24th, 1965 in Myoko, in the Niigata Prefecture of Japan. Growing up in a rural environment, Matsuno claims that he was very isolated as a child. Thus, nearly all of his time was spent in front of television screens, reading books, and practicing the very specific hobby of creating dioramas, especially those based on World War 2. Oddly enough, quite the indoor kid considering that he grew up in the countryside.   His had his first video game experiences as a high schooler, playing one of two arcade games at the local train station. One was PacMan, a game I’m sure we’re all familiar with, and the other was a game called “Xevius”, a vertically scrolling shooter war game where you take on the role of a combat airplane.   Matsuno wanted to become a writer for either books or movies, but he decided to do the smart thing and go to college and study Foreign Policy.  Finding his studies unfulfilling, he dropped out of school after 3 years to pursue his dreams. He did manage to get a writing gig as an economic reporter, but he wanted something more creative. A fan of the games Ultima Online, Dragon Quest, and The Legend of Zelda, he tried to land a writing job at a gaming company. Incredibly good at getting jobs, Matsuno landed a lead “Planner” position at a game developer called “Quest”.   The first game he did “planning” for was for the NES game “Conquest of the Crystal Palace”, not much is known about this game’s development, except that this was the first time Matsuno and his later partner in crime, composer Masaharu Iwata, began working together.   Moving up to a director position at Quest, Matsuno pitched a Fantasy RPG strategy game that would be put out on the new SNES. Borrowing strategy, fantasy, and Active-Time elements from the games “Nobunaga’s Ambition”, “Daisenryaku”, and “Master of Monsters”, game would come to be known as “Ogre Battle: The March of the Black Queen”. If I were to describe the gameplay to a Final Fantasy player, it would be Final Fantasy Tactics, but with a much simpler map. A couple interesting facts about the game: the North American Edition of the SNES version is considered one of the rarest games of all time since only 5000 copies were ever shipped. Another odd fact: Ogre Battle was a Queen song, and also Queen’s name is used in The “March of the Black Queen” part of the title. Basically, Matsuno is a huge fan of Queen and refers to them often in his games.   After the success of Ogre Battle, Matsuno would get to work on a sequel, changing the gameplay in drastic ways, focusing more on intimate battles, and making the world a 3D one. Behold the awkwardly titled “Tactics Ogre: Let Us Cling Together”. Now Ogre Battle was pretty much FF Tactics, but this, if you’ve seen screenshots of it, was almost exactly the same game, but with a tragic multi-branching storyline inspired by the Bosnian Genocide.   Tactics Ogre was an extremely popular game, with RPG Gamer calling it “forever [...] a masterpiece”.   Oh, and “Let Us Cling Together” is a Queen song.   Not one to stay anywhere for very long, in 1995 Yasumi Matsuno quit “Quest” to move to the big leagues. He would get a job at Square Soft, getting to work on a game very, very, very, similar to Tactics Ogre, a game called…   ...Bahamut Lagoon.   ...Which would later have the Final Fantasy name slapped on it in the form of “Final Fantasy Tactics”.   Tactics, of course, would turn out to be legendary. As in hearing people tell us to get to tactics is a legendary pain in the ass. That’s how popular the game has become.   Creating the Ivalice Universe, Matsuno would stretch his strategic and tactical game design skills in the loosely-related Vagrant Story. Inspired by architecture from France, nearly canceled due to it’s size, it released in 2000, and would be a smash hit, and earn the coveted 40/40 from Famitsu Magazine.   Next he would oversee Final Fantasy Tactics Advanced in a producer role, and also help out with the horrible PlayOnline Function on FFXI, but his next big gig would be as co-director (along with Hiroyuki Ito) of a little PS2 game called “Final Fantasy XII”.   FF12’s development history is insane and I’m not gonna get into it here, but Matsuno was one of the people deeply upset by Hironobu Sakaguchi’s messy departure from Square-Enix, and quit square officially over “illness”, which may or may not be true, we talk about that on the FF12 review I think.   Since 2006, Matsuno has been a free man, a freelance game that many companies have clamored for. He wrote the super-violent Wii game “Madworld”, as well as the 3DS game “Crimson Shroud”. He was asked to help write another Tactics Ogre Game, and even worked with Hironobu Sakaguchi on his mobile title “Terra Battle”.   Currently he’s working on two games for Mobile Platforms, “Unsung Story” and Lost Order”.   In conclusion, for those guys who think that the greatest Final Fantasy game of all time is Tactics, you know who to thank. Matsuno is one of those game Directors who truly has a unique style. Way to go, Matsuno

The History of Square-Enix - Part 4: The Golden age of the 2D RPG

This week, we read part four of Joe's Epic Enjoy! History of Square-Enix - Part 4: The Golden age of the 2D RPG   Enix could have floated on Dragon Quest V mega-release for the next 10 years, but they were well on their way with publishing multiple I.P.’s for the rest of the early 90’s., although this wasn’t without a few setbacks.   Enix released “The 7th Saga” in 1992, which had both mediocre reviews, as well as middling sales, and King Arthur and the Knights of Justice was apparently a hunk of Junk.   And in 1993, Enix released E.V.O: Search for Eden (A prehistoric RPG filled with dinosaurs) to similar results as the 7th Saga.   Square, however, was on top of the world. Secret of Mana in 1992 would go on to sell 1.83 million copies worldwide. It was praised as for it’s gameplay, music, and graphics, and would later be called “one of the high points of the 16 bit era” by Edge Magazine, as well as one of the greatest games of all time by famitsu, Nintendo Power, and IGN.   Although not nearly as well regarded, Square released Romancing Saga 2 to similar commercial results.   These games would kick off the golden age of 2 Dimensional JRPG’s.   Enix, in this SNES era, released a slew of games from ‘93 to ‘95, mostly in Japan due to the middling sales of Dragon Quest.   One of these was puzzle filled action RPG called “Brain Lord”, which was well reviewed, though didn’t exactly set the world on fire.   “Robotrek” would follow: a sci-fi precursor to pokemon in a sci-fi universe, that unfortunately tanked on released.   “Terranigma”, which told the story of a boy named “Ark” trying to resurrect Earth, would later be hailed as a forgotten classic, but went nowhere near Square’s sales at 200,000 copies.   An RPG/Sim/War game called Ogre Battle (one of Enix’s most important games) was released to rave reviews, and would set the stage for it’s more famous sequel: Tactics Ogre.   Little is known about Enix’s game “Jyutei Senki”, except that it was only ever released in Japan, and that it’s a science fiction RPG game. “Mystic Ark” was another little-known RPG game put out by Enix, although it was successful enough to spawn a playstation sequel in 1999.   The biggest game of 1995 (Sorry Square) was Dragon Quest 6. It sold a whopping 3.2 Million copies, and this was only in Japan!   By this time Enix had given up on selling games outside of Japan, and before 1996’s game “Star Ocean” was released, they had closed their offices in North America. The game did alright for itself, selling about as much as “Terranigma” did before it, but as with a couple of these games it’s now looked upon as a forgotten gem in the west, Nintendo Life eventually praising it as one of the best-looking games on the Super Nintendo.   In contrast, Square was doing quite well in North America, while still doing good business in Japan. For Square, almost everything they touched turned to gold.   In 1994, Square would release one of it’s most well known RPG classics, “Breath of Fire” to good reviews and financial success.   But that was nothing compared to Final Fantasy VI, now seen as one of the greatest games of all time by most sources, eventually selling almost 4 million copies worldwide. That game is f--king awesome.   Last in ‘94, the forgotten game “Live a Live” would also be followed by another big success in early ‘95: “Front Mission” a sci-fi tacticle RPG game would sell half a million copies in the first week of release.   That same year we would see what some have called “The greatest RPG game of all time”, Chrono Trigger, a ground-breaking (I think, I haven't played it) RPG praised for it’s gameplay and non-linear story filled with optional endings that have kept people coming back to the game over and over for the last 20 years.   Square would round of 1995 with hits that included the 3rd mana game, Secret of Evermore, and Romancing Saga 3.   Square was on a role. Kazushige Nojima would direct a game called “Bahamut Lagoon” in 1996, and they’d follow that up with the famous and well-regarded Super Mario RPG.   By the end of 1996 Square was setting it’s sights on the 3rd dimension, and it’s last 2 games on the SNES: “Treasure of the Rudras” and “Treasure Hunter G”, would be overshadowed by the new consoles that were gaining some steam: Sony’s Playstation and the Nintendo 64. "Soul Nomad and the World Eaters – Hotpod Hoedown." PlayStation 2. 2007. For the past few hundred years, the world has gone to hell in a handbasket. Wars rage on, sickness and disease spread, and large, mysterious creatures called World Eaters threaten to ravage the land. Developed by the same folks as Disgaea and La Pucelle Tactics, we find that this game is more off the beaten path than other NIS titles, with a squad system reminiscent of Ogre Battle and a heavy focus on pre-battle tactical decisions. Variety is the spice of life, however, and we explain why we enjoyed this little diversion from the Item World before we move on to Disgaea D2.

In this episode, I thank you for putting up with my podcasting learning curve. I'm used to singing into a microphone, but not talking into one. I observe the 22nd anniversary of the death of Freddie Mercury, one of my favorite musicians of all time. He was born Farrokh Bulsara, but chose the best stage name ever. Just like when JFK was assassinated, people remember where they were when they found out Freddie died. I was in Weatherford, Oklahoma, finishing up my degree with classes like bowling and tennis. I was dating a grunge girl. Freddie was one of the first celebrities to die of AIDS. I went over to my best friend, Phil's, apartment, and we listened to Queen and tried to come to terms with the bad news. Queen's Greatest Hits from about 1981 was the first Queen record I bought. It had "Bicycle Race" and "Fat Bottomed Girls" on it, and I was only ten or eleven years old, but I liked that. "Flash" was a huge hit, and I love it. I even try to sing it for you. "The Game" was the first rock record I ever bought, and it changed my life. I also bought "The Long Run" at the same time. My grandma bought them for me at KMart. I bet she thought I was going into a phase. The Eagles were good, but not as good as Queen. "The Game" was the first Queen album to use synthesizers. They always created their futuristic sound just with Brian May's guitar. "Play the Game" is an emotional hammer, followed by the funky "Dragon Attack". "Need You Loving Tonight", "Crazy Little Thing" etc. They all sang except Deacon. "Prime Jive" is sung by the drummer and it rocks! The album ends with some ballads that will knock you in the dirt. I implore you to seek out that album. The next album of theirs I got into was "The Works" with "Radio Gaga" on it. It had some other minor hits like "I Want To Break Free". "It's a Hard Life" sounds just like "Play the Game". There were lots of synths on that album, but not as many as on "Hot Space", which sounds like a sequenced album. I talk about "Life Is Real", which Freddie wrote for John Lennon. I got into "Innuendo" a lot, which was in 1991, the year Freddie died. It had a different sound. Freddie was very sick and almost couldn't sing sometimes. He had a strong will to perform, and it wasn't for money. He could play piano better than Elton John. There are some full length shows on YouTube you should watch. "The Show Must Go On" closed the album, and Freddie was really hurting when he recorded it. In 1988 I got Queen II. It's a very different album, talking about fairies and stuff, like Tolkien. "Ogre Battle" is as complex as Metallica. I bought an import CD that had a pound notes price sticker on it, which made me proud. "Sheer Heart Attack" is a rocker and has a great cover. You should check it out. It's got "Killer Queen" on it and "Now I'm Here", as well as the gay anthem of all time, "Misfire". John Deacon wrote it and played guitar. Freddie sings like an angel and there is much double entendre. Then they did a trio of albums named after Marx Brothers movies. The first two, "A Day at the Races" and "A Night at the Opera" are the finest example of layered rock music ever. I bought a gold plated CD of "Opera". Both of these albums have period pieces like vaudeville on them. British families after the war learned instruments and had family time together playing songs. They didn't watch TV. "Made In Heaven" is the final Queen album. The cover is beautiful and looking at it made me tear up. It features Freddie in front of Lake Geneva. Freddie was dying during the recording, but the song's messages are hopeful. That was Freddie, and I miss him. I speculate whether Freddie's buck teeth contributed to who he became as a performer. Samson had his hair, and Barbara has her nose, and Freddie had his teeth. I saw a picture of him as a child and his teeth were huge. That humbled him. Now kids have too much unearned self-esteem. I used to feel like I was showing off just by wearing sunglasses. Freddie faced down what stared him in the mirror and overcame it as the biggest star on Earth. Next, I observe the 45th anniversary of the Kinks "We Are the Village Green Preservation Society" album, which is a masterpiece. They are the quintessential British band. The album has lots of character studies and role playing inspired by the Beatles. The Village Green is a working class place in the post war era mentioned on multiple albums. The post war era was very influential to British bands like the Stones, the Who, and others. They were very worldly at a young age. All the Kinks albums of the period were loose concept albums. Ray Davies was lamenting the passing of old British traditions on these albums. He was part of the cultural change, but at the same time he was melancholy about it. The album came out in 1968 and was recorded at Pye Studios. Ray produced it. You wouldn't know the songs unless you like the Kinks, but all the songs are good. My website is www.PaperbackRocker.com.
