Send us a Text Message.A renowned musician and drummer, known for his contributions to the iconic supergroups Free and Bad Company, reminisces about his childhood in rural Wales. Following a gig with a local cover band, The Manicas, he formed his own band, Heatwave where he did both vocals and drums that was inspired by Ringo Starr after watching him on television. His life took a pivotal turn when a coin toss determined his fate, amidst a looming deadline set by his parents. Transitioning through experiences with Black Cat Bones, he ultimately teamed up with Paul Kossoff and Free, marking the recording of the smash hit "All Right Now," subsequent tours, and the eventual decline of the group. In an era where attitudes towards drug were much different, the band grappled with Paul Kossoff's addiction, which significantly impacted their trajectory. The decision to join forces with Paul Rodgers led to the inception of Bad Company, with intriguing stories surrounding the band's name.Legends suggest that during the recording sessions for the LP "Bad Company," band members were scattered throughout the house. He reflects on his favorite Bad Company track to perform, as well as his tenure with the groups Wildlife and Lonerider. Expressing disappointment over the absence of Free and Bad Company in the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame, he shares anecdotes of playing with Chuck Berry and the profound moment of drumming alongside Ringo Starr, whose influence sparked his musical journey.Beyond the band scene, he released a solo record titled "Because of You" with Chicago-based: The Empty Pockets. Recounting Bad Company's final 2019 show in Las Vegas alongside Lynyrd Skynyrd, he discusses his newfound interest in composing movie scores and the significance of contributing to numerous timeless songs. The interview concludes with insights into his life beyond music.Simon Kirke Links:Official Website: https://officialsimonkirke.com/homeListen to Lonerider: https://open.spotify.com/artist/5ZYxdswbSRegLO54dTNey6 Before the Lights Links:A Heartbeat & A Guitar: Johnny Cash & the Making of Bitter Tear Docuseries: https://www.beforethelightspod.com/docuseries/bitter-tearsHire Tommy to Speak: https://www.beforethelightspod.com/public-speakingBecome a BTL Member: https://www.beforethelightspod.com/supportBefore the Lights Website: https://www.beforethelightspod.com/Get Tommy a Glass of Vino: https://www.buymeacoffee.com/beforethelights                        Support the Show.Follow the show on Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/beforethelightspodcast/Follow the show on Face Book: https://www.facebook.com/beforethelightspodcast/Follow the show on Tik Tok: https://www.tiktok.com/@beforethelightspodcast?lang=enFollow Tommy on Face Book: https://www.facebook.com/tcanale3Rate & Review: https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/before-the-lights/id1501245041Email the host: beforethelightspod@gmail.com

Simon Kirke of Bad Company Live on Game Changers With Vicki I was Live with Simon Kirke, co-founder of Free and Bad Company, two of the greatest rock bands in history. A huge lifelong fan, it was a thrill to sit down and hear how it all went down, including how Snuffy, a guitar player kinda close to my heart, ended up playing on Free's Heartbreaker. We heard about Simon's very humble beginnings with neither running water nor electricity, talk about building character, his transistor radio, listening to big bands, pre-Beatles, making his own drumsticks, and finding his way back to London from the countryside with a time limit to make it and joining Paul Kossoff's Black Cat Bones just under the wire. How they formed Free, All Right Now, the song that made them, and perhaps, destroyed them. The unrelenting touring, and then Kosoff's unrelenting drugs. How the band evolved before imploding. Ultimately, in part, morphing into Bad Company, one of the greatest straight-up rock bands of all time with Simon co-writing its anthem. He's the only member of the band to be in every lineup since its inception, including the band's last tour. We heard about them all. Thrilling! I so love Simon's solo effort, All Because of You, written for Maria, his wife of 6 years. Reminiscent of Roger Daltry for me, it's in heavy rotation in my kitchen. He's guested on recordings by Wilson Pickett, Jim Capaldi, and Ron Wood, and has toured with Chuck Berry, Ray Charles, Bo Diddley, Jerry Lee Lewis, Eric Clapton, Keith Richards, and Ringo Starr & His All-Star Band. The best with the best. We heard great stories about Chuck, Ringo, Peter Frampton, Jack Bruce, Dave Mason, and of course, Kossoff and Rodgers. We talked at length about addiction––the drinking, the drugs, the debauchery, some great stories there, and recovery, tried more than once, and how it was too long ago for Kossoff. But, has gratefully stuck for Simon, who is doing much to give back. Simon works with Road Recovery, aiding teens to get and hopefully stay sober, is on the board of a Rehab facility, Right Turn, and is in the process of writing a Rock Opera about recovery with its CEO. Simon fears with Paul Rodgers' health issues, this is the end of Bad Company after 50 years. He's scored a few films and looks forward to a lot more of that in his future, mirroring another musician turned composer we know who's fared pretty well. They say, be careful meeting your heroes. No worries here. Simon Kirke exceeded all my very high (but sober) hopes, as a person and a rock star. What fun! Can't Get Enough! Drummer SIMON KIRKE kept the beat for two of the '70s most popular bluesy hard rockers: Free and Bad Company. Born in London, Simon developed an interest in music at a young age and joined a local band called the Maniacs to play drums and sing. He negotiated a deal with his parents after graduating high school, that if he couldn't make it as a drummer in a band within a two-year period, he would then start a college career. Just a few months before the self-imposed deadline, Kirke landed a gig with a group called the Black Cat Bones. He befriended the group's guitarist, Paul Kossoff, who convinced him to start a new band with singer Paul Rodgers and ex-John Mayall's Bluesbreakers bassist Andy Fraser. This band became Free in 1968. The group would prove to be successful particularly on the strength of their classic 1970 release Fire and Water, and its anthemic hit single "All Right Now." However drugs and infighting began to dessimate the members' relationship and they broke up in 1973. Paul Kossoff passed away just three years later. From the ashes of Free rose Bad Company. Simon and Paul Rodgers were joined by ex-King Crimson bassist Boz Burrell and ex-Mott the Hoople guitarist Mick Ralphs. The band became one of the first groups signed to Led Zeppelin's record label, Swan Song and their debut album, 1974's Bad Company, went on to become one of hard rock's all-time classics. Bad Company enjoyed several years of huge success before splitting up in 1982 (the group did reunite later in the decade without Rodgers, and again in the '90s when Rodgers rejoined). Simon Kirke has always been super busy. As well as his work with Bad Company, he guested on a long list of recordings by other artists including albums by Wilson Pickett, Jim Capaldi, Ringo Starr and Ron Wood, among countless others. He was often drumming live on tour with acts like Chuck Berry, Ray Charles, Bo Diddley, Jerry Lee Lewis, Eric Clapton, Keith Richards and Ringo Starr & His All-Star Band. In 2003, Simon went out on his very first solo tour and released his debut solo album. Since then there have been more solo albums, the latest of which is 2017's All Because of You. Simon shares his incredible stories of success as well as his multiple personal and professional challenges with us this week. Listening to Radio Luxembourg on his family's transistor as a teen in the British countryside, Simon Kirke  heard the siren song of The Beatles and was instantly hooked. Determined to make music his career, he spent two years in London before a fateful meeting with guitarist Paul Kossoff put him on a course to make his rock 'n' roll fantasy a reality. Along with Andy Fraser and Paul Rodgers, they formed the band Free which led to the mega hit/classic song All Right Now and Free becoming one of England's hottest bands. Then, in 1973, Simon, along with Free-mate Paul Rodgers, co-founded legendary hard rock supergroup Bad Company, a monster band that sold out record bins and stadiums worldwide. Their anthemic hits, Shooting Star, Feel Like Making Love, Can't Get Enough and Rock and Roll Fantasy remain among the most played songs in radio history.Simon joins us to share (mostly PG!) rock n' roll stories featuring his iconic bandmates and management and the music venues, record companies and recording studios where so much of his classic rock history played out. Simon tells us the story of Free and how All Right Now was written in desperation, to get the crowd dancing. Simon also details their legendary performance at the Isle of Wight Festival, and how Free stood up to the label that wanted to rebrand them the Heavy Metal Kids.He shares the backstage/pre-show moment when Bad Company's manager gifted them with platinum albums and we discuss the personality types drawn to each instrument. And, a quarter century sober, Simon considers whether productivity and creation may be the greatest high off all.Simon has written a possibly too spicy memoir. Paul Kossoff was the underrated and always tasteful guitarist for the 60s British blues and hard rock band Free, who are most famous for their song ‘All Right Now'. He tragically died at the age of 25 in 1976 but left us with lots of great guitar playing. Known for his immense tone and singular vibrato, this video takes a close look at his style, and one of his final recordings: the instrumental track, Time Away, which was recorded with John Martyn, and features some of Paul's best guitar playing. Guitarists from Joe Bonamassa through Dave Murray, Angus Young, Robin Trower and Paul Weller have lauded his playing – Eric Clapton even famously went to him for vibrato lessons! One of my favourite blues guitarists, and hopefully one of yours too now!

What the Riff?!?
1976 - June: Steve Miller Band “Fly Like an Eagle”

What the Riff?!?

Play Episode Listen Later Oct 4, 2021 42:28

Believe it or not, Fly Like an Eagle is the ninth studio album by the Steve Miller Band.  Guitarist, lead singer, and founder Steve Miller got his start in Chicago playing the blues.  He formed the Steve Miller Blues Band after moving to San Francisco in 1966, and shortened it to the Steve Miller Band not long after its formation.  The band started with a psychedelic rock feel in their first albums, transitioning to a more straightforward rock sound with the 1973 album  The Joker, and continuing with their 1976 release, Fly Like an Eagle. This album was largely written by Miller who also produced it and provided vocals, guitar, and keyboards.  Additional personnel were Lonnie Turner on bass, and Gary Mallaber on percussion.  Miller was not satisfied with the recording studios where he had recorded previous albums, and built his own studio at his home in the Pacific Northwest where he would record his next album.  This also explains the multi-year break between The Joker and Fly Like an Eagle. The Steve Miller Band had experienced commercial success with the album The Joker, but Fly Like an Eagle would take that success to a new level with three hit singles.  Fly Like an Eagle would eventually be certified quadruple platinum, and Rolling Stone would declare it the best album of 1976.Both this album and the next, 1977's Book of Dreams were recorded at the same time.  However, Miller decided to release the two as separate albums rather than as a double album.  Both would be hits, and would constitute the heart of commercial success from the Steve Miller Band along with 1973's The Joker."  Take the Money and RunThe first single from the album tells the story of Billy Joe and Bobby Sue, a Bonnie-and-Clyde set of criminals, and the Texas police officer chasing them.  It is a road trip song, inspired by Miller's trips with family, listening to the radio in the car.Wild Mountain HoneyThis song is a slower and deeper cut off the album, and hearkens back to the psychedelic Steve Miller Band days.  "You run for the money but you don't even know about wild mountain honey."  Miller plays the sitar on this track.    SerenadeA serenade from the stars!  Another deep track, the song's message appears to be both local and cosmic.  The guitar has a Spanish feel that gives off a road trip - and trippy - vibe as it switches between major and minor chords.  There's also a bit of a lag between the lyrics and the musical beat which gives it an unusual style.Rock'n MeThe second single from the album hit number 1 on the Billboard Hot 100.  Miller said he was inspired by Free's "All Right Now," and it was an anthem for large concert venues.  Calling out the cities of the tour was sure to be a crowd pleaser.   ENTERTAINMENT TRACK:"Gene Gene, the Dancing Machine from the television series “The Gong Show”This show was raw comedy and a staple of syndicated afternoon reruns when we were growing up.  Gene Gene, the Dancing Machine was a technician on the show who would come out and do a dance routine toward the end of the show.  Bad, but in a good way. STAFF PICKS:Fool To Cry by the Rolling StonesBrian leads off the staff picks with a mellow number from Mick Jagger and company off the Rolling Stones Black and Blue album.  It was the only song from the album to chart.  In this ballad, Jagger is talking to his daughter at first, then his lover, and both tell him the same thing - "you're a fool to cry, and it makes me wonder why."A Trick of the Tail by GenesisBruce's staff pick features the first single from Genesis with Phil Collins taking over vocals.  The song tells about The Beast who leaves his kingdom of gold to enter the human world.  He is captured and put into a carnival freak show, but escapes by convincing his captors that he can take them to his city of gold. Nobody's Fault But Mine by Led ZeppelinWayne rocks out with the hit from Led Zeppelin's Presence album.  Blind Willie Johnson originally recorded this song in 1928.  Page and Plant took credit for writing it originally, but credited Johnson later and downgraded their credits to "arranged by" rather than claiming to have written it.Silly Love Songs by Paul McCartney and WingsRob  gets "soppy" with this upbeat number from Wings.  McCartney wrote this in response to John Lennon's critique that McCartney wrote "sentimental slush."  Paul McCartney was not afraid to write love songs, and musically asks "what's wrong with that?" here in this pop hit.   COMEDY TRACK:One Piece at a Time by Johnny Cash and Tennessee ThreeWe finish off this week's podcast with a novelty song that would be the last top 40 hit from Johnny Cash.

Guest Bio:“Montana isn't just where I live,” says Satsang's Drew McManus. “It's my heart, my soul. Along with my family, it's my everything.”It's little wonder, then, that the state played such a pivotal role in inspiring ‘All Right Now,' Satsang's extraordinary new album and debut release for venerated indie label Side One Dummy. Written and recorded during an extended hiatus from the road, the record finds McManus reconnecting with his western roots and exploring a whole new palette of sounds and textures, drawing on classic country and modern Americana to forge a joyful, rustic collection all about letting go and living in the moment. McManus produced the album himself, and while the songs here are certainly honest and deeply personal, they're written in a spiritual language that taps into something far more universal, something inherent in the human condition that binds us as brothers and sisters on a shared journey to find ourselves and our place in this world. The performances and arrangements are broad and spacious to match, reflecting the wide-open fields and soaring mountains that surrounded the band during the whirlwind recording process, and the result is a lush, organic collection fueled by acoustic guitars, fiddle, and pedal steel, a warm, inviting record that hints at everything from Uncle Tupelo and The Jayhawks to Gregory Alan Isakov and The Head and the Heart as it meditates on the power—and the pull—of home.“I've been on the road for the last five or six years straight,” says McManus, “so being back in Montana for a whole year was a big change. Having that kind of uninterrupted time at home helped me fall back in love with songwriting in a whole new way.”Though McManus was born in Montana, he actually spent much of his formative years in Des Moines, IA. His childhood was troubled, to say the least, marked by physical abuse at home and a nose for trouble that surrounded him. Music offered an escape, though, and McManus found solace in the punk rock and hip-hop he discovered through his love of skateboarding. Brash and aggressive, the songs were a far cry from the country tunes his mother played on endless loop around the house.“She loved the old stuff like Buck Rogers and Hank Williams,” McManus recalls, “but she was really into that mid-to-late-nineties sound, guys like Garth Brooks and Randy Travis and Travis Tritt. I didn't get it at the time, but she always used to tell me, ‘Someday, when you're older, you'll come back to this music.'”Desperate to escape his surroundings and convinced that he'd wind up in jail like his brother if he stayed, McManus left home as a teenager and moved in with his older sister in Chicago. His first few years there played out like one long party, but as time wore on, it became apparent that the party was spiraling out of control. “It was clear to everyone else around me that I was an alcoholic and a drug addict,” McManus explains. “Eventually, my friends just sat me down and said, ‘We think you're going to die if you keep this up.'”So McManus packed his bags and headed back to Montana, where his biological father worked at a rehab clinic. The road to recovery was a long and arduous one, but McManus eventually got clean and sober, fell in love, and married the woman of his dreams. For the first time in a long time, life was good, and yet it still felt like something was missing, like some fundamental building block of his personality was being neglected. It wasn't until McManus found himself on a backpacking trek in the Himalayas that the final piece of the puzzle fell into place. “I realized on that trip that you only get one shot at life,” says McManus, “and if you've got a chance to utilize your talents and follow your dreams, then you've got to go for it. It gave me this renewed sense of purpose, and within a week of getting back home, I started playing shows and launched the band.”McManus filled notebook after notebook on that Himalayan journey, and the material would eventually go on to form the basis of Satsang's breakout 2016 debut, ‘The Story of You.' Steeped in reggae, hip-hop, and world music, the album was an uplifting affirmation that connected with fans around the world, racking up roughly 15 millions streams on Spotify alone. McManus and his bandmates returned a year later with their similarly successful sophomore effort, ‘Pyramid(s),' which hit #1 on the Billboard Reggae Chart and #2 on iTunes, and pushed their sound even further with 2019's ‘Kulture,' which incorporated a wider swath of influences from Motown to Tom Petty. Relentless road warriors, the group built a devoted following one night at a time, sharing stages with the likes of Michael Franti & Spearhead and Nahko and Medicine for the People as they worked their way up from bars and clubs to massive festivals.

Sponsored by Drinkmate Theme music provided by Peter Perkins Special Thank You to Lucy Piller/ARN Entertainment for providing the talent Born and raised in London, the Beatles perked a teenage Simon's interest in rock music, and he picked up the drums - leading to a gig with a local band called the Maniacs, on which Simon supplied drums and lead vocals (something quite uncommon at the time). Simon worked out a deal with his parents after graduating high school, that if he couldn't "make it" as a drummer in a band within a two-year period, that he would begin a college career. Just a few months before the deadline, Simon landed a gig with a group called the Black Cat Bones. The drummer befriended the group's talented guitarist, Paul Kossoff, who in turn convinced Simon to leave the group with him and begin a new outfit with singer Paul Rodgers. Soon ex-John Mayall's Bluesbreakers bassist Andy Fraser signed on and Free was officially formed in 1968. Mixing blues with hard rock, the group would prove to be quite influential, especially on the strength of their classic 1970 release, Fire and Water, and its strutting, anthemic hit single, "All Right Now."      When the band broke up, it didn't take Simon long to find another gig, joining Paul Rodgers in a new band, Bad Company, which was quite similar stylistically to Free. Joined by ex-King Crimson bassist Boz Burrell and ex-Mott the Hoople guitarist Mick Ralphs, Bad Company was the first group signed to Led Zeppelin's record label, Swan Song. Their debut album, 1974's Bad Company, would go on to become one of hard rock's all-time classics, as it birthed such long-standing rock radio standards as "Can't Get Enough," "Ready for Love," and the title track, written by Paul and Simon himself. The group hails as one of the all-time top rock outfits. Simon Kirke is the only member of Bad Company who's been in every lineup of the band.      In addition to his work with Free and Bad Company, Simon has guested on a long list of recordings by other artists over the years, including albums by Wilson Pickett, Faces, Gov't Mule, Jim Capaldi and Ron Wood, among countless others and he is often found drumming live on tour with acts like Chuck Berry, Ray Charles, Bo Diddley, Jerry Lee Lewis, Eric Clapton, Keith Richards and Ringo Starr & His All-Star Band. Simon recently toured with Bad Company and The Eagles' Joe Walsh, and recorded a soul-baring solo record, "All Because of You," with Chicago band, The Empty Pockets, released by The End Records/BMG (2017).   https://officialsimonkirke.com

In 1968, the members of Free came together featuring a young Paul Rodgers at the helm. The band wasn’t necessarily known for their studio albums, but instead, their non-stop touring and live shows drove their success, save for their one and only hit, the song “All Right Now.” Let’s take a deep dive into more of what made the band Free so interesting: Free drummer Simon Kirke explained: "The song 'All Right Now' was created after a bad gig in Durham, England. Our repertoire at that time was mostly slow and medium paced blues songs which was alright if you were a student sitting quietly and nodding your head to the beat. However, we finished our show in Durham and walked off the stage to the sound of our own footsteps. The applause had died before I had even left the drum riser. When we got into the dressing room, it was obvious that we needed an uptempo number, a rocker to close our shows. All of a sudden, the inspiration struck (bass player Andy) Fraser, and he started bopping around singing ALL RIGHT NOW... He sat down and wrote it right there in the dressing room. It couldn't have taken more than 10 minutes." Lead Singer Paul Rodgers began his musical career fronting the band Free, but his biggest success was actually fronting Bad Company, and later taking a turn in the 80s band The Firm, and the reincarnated Queen in the early 2000s For those of you that enjoy the song All Right Now, you may have first been exposed to it on your favorite radio station in the 70s. If you can believe it, the radio edit of the song is shorter by nearly one minute versus the album edit. If you spin the record at home, you’ll find a longer guitar solo Rolling Stone has referred to the band as "British hard rock pioneers". The magazine ranked Rodgers No. 55 in its list of the "100 Greatest Singers of All Time", while bandmate Paul Kossoff was ranked No. 51 in its list of the "100 Greatest Guitarists of All Time" In the early 1970s Free became one of the biggest-selling British blues rock groups; by the time they disbanded, they had sold more than 20 million albums around the world and had played more than 700 arena and festival concerts

“Led Zeppelin III” by Led Zeppelin Brian presents this CLASSIC album, “Three” — by Led Zeppelin. Giants of the rock genre and precursors to the heavy metal sound, Led Zeppelin would set the standard for decades as one of the big four (along with The Beatles, The Rolling Stones, and The Who) super groups of Rock and Roll. Powered by Jimmy Page on guitar, John Paul Jones on bass, Robert Plant on vocals, and John Bonham on percussion, Led Zeppelin was a household name in the rock world by 1970 when they released their third album, simply known as Led Zeppelin III. This album is a great one, but often underrated due to the fame of Led Zeppelin's second and fourth albums. Today we travel back to October 1970 to check out Led Zeppelin III and a number of other tunes at the turn of the decade. “That's The Way” This track has a heavy folk and acoustic influence. The album was recorded using a mobile studio, and takes a much mellower tone as a whole than many of the other Led Zeppelin albums. The song was originally called "The Boy Next Door." “Tangerine” This song was written in 1968 while Jimmy Page was still with The Yardbirds. Less acoustic than "That's The Way," but still a mellow, almost Pink Floyd feel. “Gallow's Pole” This is an updated arrangement of a folk song called "The Maid Freed from the Gallows." John Paul Jones plays mandolin, and Jimmy Page plays banjo on this song, while Plant's vocals soar. “Hey, Hey, What can I do” Originally cut as a B-side to "The Immigrant Song," this song was re-released on their Coda album. "I said I got a little woman and she won't be true!" "Gonna leave her with the guitars playing." ENTERTAINMENT TRACK: Theme from “Sesame Street” The Public Broadcasting Service (PBS) began broadcasting in 1970, ad Sesame Street was one of the first and key shows. STAFF PICKS: “Empty Pages” by Traffic Rob's pick has a funky jazz feel. Steve Winwood's distinctive vocals front this psychedelic group. From the fourth Traffic album “John Barleycorn Must Die.” “All Right Now” by Free Paul Rodgers fronted this short-lived group, which is why it sounds so similar to Bad Company. “Now don't you wait, or hesitate, let's move before they raise the parking rate!” “Green-eyed Lady” by Sugarloaf Wayne points out the iconic bass line. A “two hit wonder,” this American band had two big hits, “Don't Call Us, We'll Call You,” and this song. “Out in the Country” by Three Dog Night Brian highlights this song written by Paul Williams. There was a huge environmental movement in 1970, and this song taps into that energy. LAUGH TRACK: “A Girl Named Johnny Cash” by Jane Morgan A parody of...a parody... kind of like Inception, maybe? We finish up with Morgan's spoof of Johnny Cash's spoof entitled “A Boy Named Sue.”

Born and raised in London, Simon landed a gig with a group called the Black Cat Bones. Mixing blues with hard rock, the group would prove to be quite influential, especially on the strength of their classic Fire and Water, "All Right Now." When the band broke up, it didn't take Simon long to find another gig, joining Paul Rodgers in a new band, Bad Company. Simon Kirke is the only member of Bad Company who’s been in every lineup of the band.In addition to his work with Free and Bad Company, Simon has “guested” on a long list of recordings by other artists including Wilson Pickett, Faces, Gov’t Mule, Jim Capaldi and Ron Wood, among countless others and he is often found drumming live on tour with acts like Chuck Berry, Ray Charles, Bo Diddley, Jerry Lee Lewis, Eric Clapton, Keith Richards and Ringo Starr & His All-Star Band. Simon just finished his latest solo record, "All Because of You," to be released on BMG Records in 2016. Presently, he is on-the-road for 2016 with Bad Company on their 2016 world tour with, The Eagles' Joe Walsh.

HIV Radio Minute with Josh Robbins: Andy Fraser, the co-writer to the hit song, “All Right Now” and member of the rock band Free, has passed away at the age of 62, after living with HIV for years. Fraser’s song remains arguably by many as one of the defining hits of classic rock radio, according to Aol - Fraser produced the track and plays a bass solo on it as well. And it seems that you can’t visit a football stadium without hearing the tune. Stanford University and University of Southern California marching bands each play it at virtually every game. The Riverside County coroner told the dailymail, "The cause of death is under investigation, but it was known that he had been battling HIV and cancer. He was reportedly found in his car by his gardener.” His daughter called him, “a force of nature.” Co-writer of the hit song, “All Right Now” passed away.

Wes Bertrand and I continue our series based on Nathaniel Branden's book, Six Pillars of Self-Esteem. Today's show includes a discussion based on the sixth pillar, the Practice of Living With Integrity. Do your ideals, convictions, standards, beliefs and behavior line up? Do most people know what their ideals, convictions, standards and beliefs are? The root of self-esteem is not in accomplishment or output, but in our practices. However in school, we are only our output. WORDS AND BEHAVIORS MATCH “Integrity is the integration of ideals, convictions, standards, beliefs—and behavior. When our behavior is congruent with our professed values, when ideals and practice match, we have integrity. If they don't, we lose face in out own eyes." SUPERIORS AND AUTHORITY FIGURES untrustworthy because of incongruence Being an adult with an inconsistent boss was stressful enough "ONLY I WILL KNOW..." -dispel the idea that only the judgment of others counts -TRUTH: only mine counts when it comes to self-esteem LIVING WITH GUILT (original sin is anti-self esteem) 1. face and accept full reality, without disowning or avoidance 2. seek to understand why we did what we did 3. acknowledge to others the harm we've done, convey understanding of consequences 4. take restorative action 5. firmly commit to behaving differently in the future SELF ESTEEM isn't taught but IRRATIONAL STANDARDS ARE -religious teachings that damn pleasure, state, culture, society courage to challenge deepest assumptions of "good" -teaming living consciously with need for integrity to examine values we were taught -Practice of Integrity has inconsistencies in our lives explore this! why? -challenge: high personal standards while feeling like we're living in a moral sewer, the feeling of a lonely and heroic undertaking PRINCIPLE OF RECIPROCAL CAUSATION behaviors that generate SE are also expressions of SE practice of pillars genesprates a need for them, not work anymore (exercise or nutrition) THE SIX PILLARS OF SELF-ESTEEM 1. The Practice of Living Consciously 2. The Practice of Self-Acceptance 3. The Practice of Self-Responsibility 4. The Practice of Self-Assertiveness 5. The Practice of Living Purposefully 6. The Practice of Personal Integrity Questions to answer in this series: what is self-esteem? why is it important? what can we do to raise self-esteem? what role do others play in our self-esteem? The steps we'll try to follow for each pillar: -identify and define -what are the obstacles -personal stories, struggles -how to overcome them Bumper Music: The Who - "Who Are You" Donnie Iris - "Ahh Leah" Free - "All Right Now" Look Closer: Complete Liberty Podcast http://completeliberty.com/ NathanielBranden.com http://www.nathanielbranden.com/ An Introduction to Nonviolent Communication http://happinesscounseling.com/NVC_Intro.pdf Happiness Counseling Resource Page http://happinesscounseling.com/happiness-resources/ The Six Pillars of Self-Esteem (pdf) http://experiencelife.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/11/70-the-six-pillars-of-self-esteem.pdf
