Hear ye! Hear ye! Listen you lot! Listen you lot! We've got another episode for you - as you can tell because you're reading this. There's a bit more jibber jabber up front than usual, but it's all very information, very well thought out, and completely planned, so don't skip any of it, OK? If you skip the first twenty odd minutes you'll miss out on a secret to success that could change your life, the lives of your children, the lives of your children's children, the lives of you children's children's children, and so on and so forth, et cetera, et cetera, et cetera. And you wouldn't want that, would you?If Randy were to title this episode, he'd probably call it "Neptune of the seas" or possibly, "Is there enough time for peace?"Today's episode looks at another Freddie classic and anchor of the Sheer Heart Attack medley, "LIly of the Valley"NOTE: Skip forward to 23:45 if wanna get straight into the manifestations and wheel spin. The song at the end is on of Kev's titled, simply, "America". Seems somewhat appropriate at the moment... https://youtu.be/lmPOZ6ZE090Thanks to everyone who tuned in to the last episode and left us some comments on Facebook, Bluesky, and Discord! Chrissy is back! In celebration we dive into Queen's 1974 album *Sheer Heart Attack,* an electrifying mix of glam rock and hard-hitting guitar riffs that defined the band's signature style. We explore tracks like “Killer Queen” and “Stone Cold Crazy,” discuss the band's evolving sound, and examine how *Sheer Heart Attack* set Queen on their path to becoming rock legends. Escuchar audio
A (relatively) in-depth analysis of the 1975 album 'A Night at the Opera' by Queen in (just under) twenty minutes. In this episode I am in discussion with Dr. Andrew Webber.Queen's previous album, Sheer Heart Attack had achieved commercial success and the single Killer Queen reached number two on the UK Singles Chart. Despite this success, the band was broke at the time, essentially due to a contract they had signed which meant that they would produce albums for a production company, who would then sell the album to a record label. This meant that Queen saw almost none of the money they earned. Brian May was living in a bedsit, while Freddie Mercury lived in a flat with rising damp. The matter eventually came to a head when the recently married John Deacon was denied a cash advance of £4,000 by the band's manager for a deposit on a house. The group's increasing frustration led to Mercury writing the song Death on Two Legs, which would serve as the opening track to A Night at the Opera. Upon release, A Night at the Opera became Queen's first number-one album in the UK and produced the band's most successful single, Bohemian Rhapsody. The song has since become popular worldwide. In 2011, a digitally remastered version of the album was released.I hope you enjoy the podcast and do leave feedback if you like what you have heard.Mathew Woodall
How much Brown would a Leroy Brown if a Leroy could brown Brown? Fucked if I know and to be honest, I don't think it's overly relevant to this week's episode. There's a whole lot of Jim Croce, because Kev loves him and Kev does the edit, so Kev gets to put Jim Croce in there! Wanna argue? Double bass, tack piano, harmonized train whistles, pitch correction, and a whole hell of a lot of fun. It's all here, so come and get it! If Randy were to title this episode, he'd probably call it "Put a shotgun to his head" or possibly "Why can't we get along?"Today's episode looks at a Freddie's sizzling first foray into swing, "Bring Back That Leroy Brown" from 1974's "Sheer Heart Attack".NOTE: Skip forward to 16:48 if wanna get straight into the manifestations and wheel spin. The music at the end is "Hijack The Show" taken from "Residential Gas Leak", the second release by Randy's former band, Absofunkinlutely. These two episodes are heavy-- in more ways than one. Just how far is Kira willing to go to get a good night's sleep? And can Echoes' next Act prove to been even less useful than Act 2? [podcast covers anime episodes 23: "Sheer Heart Attack, Part 1" and 24: "Sheer Heart Attack, Part 2"]

Saltpeter and sulfur and charcoal, oh my! How many pods within a pod can you reasonably expect to get away with? The cake vs pie fiasco has now spilled over into another podcast, and Corey's not having it! This week sees Kev and Randy take on one of the titans of the Queen discography. Our intrepid pair aren't scared though, in fact, they laugh in the face of danger, they tickle the bollocks of fear, and then give terror a wedgie and tell it to go fuck itself. If Kevin were to title this episode, he'd probably call it "Triangles and tubular bells" or possibly "She's out to get you!"Today's episode covers Queen's monster breakout single from Sheer Heart Attack, the ever so dandy, "Killer Queen"NOTE: Skip forward to 31:35 if wanna get straight into the manifestations and wheel spin. Queen: the final frontier. These are the voyages of the Seaside Pod Review. Its continuing mission: to explore strange new songs; to seek out new lyrics and new musicla expressions; to boldly go where millions of people have gone before! It's all a bit moody over here at the SPR. Randy hasn't forgotten his suitcase this time and Kev's German accent is definitely on point! If Randy were to title this episode, he'd probably call it “Darth Vadar in flats” or possibly, “When I get home I'm gonna rip my wife's underwear right off, cos the waistband is killing me.”Today's song covers Brian's funereal dirge "She Makes Me (Stormtrooper in Stilettoes)" from 1974's superb "Sheer Heart Attack".The cover version of Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers' Listen to Her Heart by Cyberattack, which is clipped in the episode, can be found here: https://youtu.be/EINdLqmcYH0NOTE: Skip forward to 23:31 if wanna get straight into the manifestations and wheel spin. It's a Roger tune. It's from Sheer Heart Attack. It's a song The Cardinal does not know, so Kev gets to watch his pal hear the song for the first time. We get into the weeds about endings and medleys and solos, oh my! There's more talk about Metallica's drummer (honestly, this is the last week!) and Randy reveals why he didn't buy his wife a Christmas present this year. He also gets all emotional about a rescue. It's pathetic, to be frank. If Randy were to title this episode, he'd probably call it "Rog', just turn down the stereo!" or maybe "Mr. Randy really fucking blew it this time..."Today's episode covers Roger's solo contribution to "Sheer Heart Attack" and he's wearing purple shoes. It's time to check in with the "Tenement Funster".NOTE: If you want to skip ahead to Randy and Kev's manifestations and the wheel spin, that happens at 33:51Thanks to everyone who tuned in to the last episode and left us some comments on Twitter, Facebook, and BlueSky! "Hey guys, the bass player wrote a song and he wants to play it for us". "HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA! Oh, wait, what? You're serious? Oh OK then, yeh let's hear the bass player's 'song'..." That's usually the way it goes in bands but John's first contribution made it onto side two of 1974's adventurous masterpiece, Sheer Heart Attack. Randy knows this song, Kev knows this song and the boys get into a discussion about whether Roger Taylor is swinging the beat. Kev insists he is, Randy is not convinced! The first song that Queen ever played live and a mainstay of the set from 1970 to 1978, this is possibly the first thrash metal song. It's also the first song credited to all four band members, mainly because they couldn't remember who'd actually written the lyrics! We also listen to the BBC version of Spread Your Wings after repeated recommendations. Oh, and we talk about the Metallica cover that inexplicably won a grammy in 1991.If Randy were to title this episode, he'd probably call it "Wouldn't a wet fish bone smell worse" or possibly "Stone Cold Crazy Rocks"Today's episode covers the heaviest song from arguably Queen's heaviest album "Sheer Heart Attack", we're all "Stone Cold Crazy".NOTE: If you want to skip ahead to Randy and Kev's manifestations and the wheel spin, that happens at 41:37! Thanks to everyone who tuned in to the last episode and left us some comments on Twitter and Facebook! We'll always try to answer any questions you have and seriously appreciate any corrections you make to anything we get wrong. And thanks so much for all your support as usual. Yeah we kinda lifted that "YEEAAHHH!!" from 1001 Album Club's episode of this album. We greatly apologize. But also, how else can you describe this album other than "YEEAAHHH!!!"? Queen has never rocked this hard before, nor will they rock as hard again. At long last, Freddie Mercury, Brian May, Roger "I'm In Love With My Car" Taylor, & John Deacon, have found their sound. So let's take a look at Queen's 'Sheer Heart Attack'!
If Randy were to title this episode he'd call it "Hey. Hey. Hey, Hey. It was the DNA."Squealy guitars, racist American douchebags, a Beatles homage, and a game of scrabble that almost ended a marriage! It's all in this week's episode folks! Kev and Randy talk about vocal effects, epic drum fills, and crrrrrrrrunchy guitars and there's a distinct lack of Deacy on today's track. We're talking about Sheer Heart Attack. It's fast, it's loud, and it's glorious. Just like the Cardinal's lovemaking technique. Thanks to everyone who tuned in to the last episode and left us some comments on Twitter and Facebook! We'll always try to answer any questions you have and seriously appreciate any corrections you make to anything we get wrong. And thanks so much for all your support as usual. On this edition of the Richard Crouse Show we meet Emm Gryner. She is a Canadian musician and vocal coach. David Bowie named Emm as one of his two favourite Canadian acts. U2 frontman Bono named her song “Almighty Love” as one of six songs that he wished he had written. Gryner toured in David Bowie's band, singing and playing keyboards, and appears on the recordings Bowie at the Beeb and Glastonbury 2000. Emm helped make the first music video in outer space with Chris Hadfield and is also the author of a book called “The Healing Power of Singing: Raise Your Voice, Change Your Life: What Touring With David Bowie, Single Parenting And Ditching The Music Business Taught Me In 25 Easy Steps.” Her new album is “Business & Pleasure” is a celebration of the Detroit radio scene and the music that shaped her childhood. From Motown, jazz and pop, to Steely Dan, Fleetwood Mac and the Doobies, Business & Pleasure is infused with the sunshine soul and stellar playing of the late 70s and early 80s. Then, Gord Sinclair stops by. Best known as the bass player and one of the songwriters in The Tragically Hip, he is now a “reluctant solo artist” with a new album called In Continental Drift, available now wherever you buy fine music. Finally, we go into the vault to revisit my interview with the late, great rock photographer Mick Rock. He is often referred to as ‘The Man Who Shot the Seventies', for his iconic images of Syd Barrett, David Bowie, Lou Reed, Iggy Pop, Queen, The Ramones, Blondie, Rocky Horror Picture Show, etc. London born, he has resided in New York for over 35 years. He has shot over 100 album covers. Rock was instrumental in creating many key rock ‘n' roll images, such as album covers for Syd Barrett's Madcap Laughs, Lou Reed's Transformer and Coney Island Baby, Iggy and The Stooges' Raw Power, Queen's Queen II (recreated for their classic music video ‘Bohemian Rhapsody') and Sheer Heart Attack, The Ramones End of the Century and Joan Jett's I Love Rock ‘n' Roll, among many others. He was the chief photographer on the films The Rocky Horror Picture Show, Hedwig and the Angry Inch and Shortbus. He recently shot special stills for the new TV version of Rocky Horror, featuring the transgender actress Laverne Cox as Frank n Furter. He also produced and directed the seminal music videos for Bowie: ‘John, I'm Only Dancing', ‘Jean Genie', ‘Space Oddity', and ‘Life On Mars'.
Montrose was considered to be America's answer to Led Zeppelin in the early 70's. Founder Ronnie Montrose had played with a number of musicians including Van Morrison, Boz Scaggs, and with Edgar Winter on the hit singles “Frankenstein” and “Free Ride.” He formed the band bearing his name with bassist/keyboardist Alan Fitzgerald, drummer Denny Carmassi, and front man Sammy Hagar. Paper Money is the group's second album, and was the band's highest-charting release, reaching number 65 on the Billboard 200 chart. This follow-up to their self-titled debut album took on a broader style, with a stronger range of rhythm and dynamics while downplaying the heavy metal feel of the first album. Ronnie Montrose thought that the heavier music was a passing thing. However Montrose was just ahead of its time, and heavy metal was about to explode. Ronnie Montrose had a strict no-drug use policy for concerts, as he wanted all the members to be in top shape on their instruments and vocals for the show. The sessions for Paper Money were often marred by the deteriorating relationship between Montrose and Hagar. Soon after this album release, Sammy Hagar would leave the band for a solo career and eventual duties as the front man for Van Halen. Fitzgerald would go on to play for Night Ranger, and as an offstage keyboard player for Van Halen in the 90's. Carmassi would play for a number of artists including Heart, Whitesnake, Al Stewart, Kim Carnes, and Joe Walsh, as well as his own solo work, placing him on more recorded albums than Sammy Hagar.Wayne features this rocking album for today's podcast. StarlinerWe start this podcast with an instrumental with a space theme — prior to Star Wars. This song is the final track for side 1 of the album. Spaceage SacrificeAnother space themed song, this one was written by Hagar and Montrose. Although considered “sci-fi rock,” the song itself is a bit critical of the effort and money spent to go to the moon when troubles remained unsolved on Earth. "Don't think twice spaceage sacrifice. Well, let's go back when it all was starting. A man on the moon and people were starving."Paper Money This track is a critique of the monetary system in a time of inflation. “Take away all my silver, take away my gold, and hand me a stack of paper, paper money don't hold.” This one is the first single from the album, and the concluding track.I've Got the FireWayne saves his favorite track for last. It is a hard-driving song with explosive energy. This one may benefit from the concealed tension between Montrose's edgy tone and Hagar's vocal virtuosity. It would be the last one the band recorded before Hagar left the band to pursue a solo career. ENTERTAINMENT TRACK:Puttin' On the Ritz by (from the motion picture “Young Frankenstein”)Mel Brooks' black and white comedy classic featured Dr. Frankenstein (pronounced FRAHNK-en-steen) and the monster in Broadway-styled number. STAFF PICKS:You Ain't Seen Nothing Yet by Bachman Turner OverdriveRob get's the staff picks rolling with a Canadian band's number 1 hit on the Billboard Hot 100. The song was intended as a joke for Randy Bachman's brother Gary, who had a stutter. It was used as a “work track” to set up the mics and amps in the studio, but it wound up being a hit after it was included on their “Not Fragile” album.Killer Queen by QueenBruce's staff pick is the first U.S. hit from Queen. It went to number 12 on the Billboard Hot 100, and is off their third album “Sheer Heart Attack.” It is the first Queen song to incorporate the cabaret-style and harmonies that we know today as the quintessentially Queen sound. The lyrics are about a high class call girl.Longfellow Serenade by Neil Diamond Lynch brings us a song inspired by an incident in school where Diamond used the poetry of Henry W. Longfellow to woo a girl. It went to number 5 on the Billboard Hot 100 and number 1 on the Adult Contemporary charts. It is off Diamond's ninth studio album, "Serenade."I've Got the Music In Me by Kiki Dee and the Kiki Dee BandWayne wraps up the staff picks on a positive note. The lyrics describe how the singer will not be deterred because they have the music in them. Kiki Dee is best known in the U.S. for her duet with Elton John, but is better known in England as a singer of "blue eyed soul." She was the first white British artist to be signed by Motown. NOVELTY TRACK:Kung Fu Fighting by Carl DouglasInterest in martial arts in the early 70's inspired this song which would go to number 1 on the US, UK, Canadian, and Australian charts.

This week, Randy and Kev get their first song from Sheer Heart Attack. It's the opener from side two, which isn't related to the closer from side two with kinda the same name. The boys are split in their eventual unscientific opinions on this one but both feel that they made valid points. So they agreed to disagree, raised a glass to each other's health and vowed to come back to do it all again next week. Lots of talk about vocal shifting, high-vocals, and a little bit of chat about Alec Guiness for good measure! Thanks to everyone who tuned in to the last episode and left us some comments on Twitter!

Happy (belated) birthday to the late great Freddie Mercury! In this episode, we choose two songs by Queen that were primarily written by Freddie Mercury. His songwriting, his vocal talent, and his stage presence are truly unparalleled. Unfortunately, he was taken from us too soon and succumbed to complications as a result from having AIDS. His influence continues to live on in the bands we listen today, and may he rest in power! Our songs for this week:Flick of the Wrist by Queen, off their 1974 album Sheer Heart Attack released via EMI / Elektra.Love of My Life by Queen, off their 1975 album A Night at the Opera released via EMI / Elektra.Support the show
When the band Queen set out to make Sheer Heart Attack, their third album, much was at stake. They were embroiled in a battle over royalties with their management, and guitarist Brian May had become extremely ill while on tour as the supporting act for Mott The Hoople. Broke and finding themselves working under pressures that could have dashed their rock star dreams, Freddy Mercury somehow wrote “Killer Queen.” The whimsical song about a high-class call girl ended up being their first smash hit in the US, and its success finally helped propel the band to headliner status. Take a closer look at this killer song in the new episode of the Behind The Song podcast. Watch the video episode and subscribe to the Behind The Song Youtube channel: https://bit.ly/2DBF4wJ
Ian tackles Roger's curious call back to a previous album "Sheer Heart Attack" off of News Of The World. We chat Punk, live versions, the power of the chug and of course the scores, leaving Jai in a state of shock.
Queen are a British rock band formed in London in 1970. The band comprised Freddie Mercury (lead vocals, piano), Brian May (guitar, vocals), Roger Taylor (drums, vocals) and John Deacon (bass). Their earliest works were influenced by progressive rock, hard rock and heavy metal, but the band gradually ventured into more conventional and radio-friendly works by incorporating further styles, such as arena rock and pop rock. Before forming Queen, May and Taylor had played together in the band Smile. Mercury was a fan of Smile and encouraged them to experiment with more elaborate stage and recording techniques. He joined in 1970 and suggested the name "Queen". Deacon was recruited in February 1971, before the band released their eponymous debut album in 1973. Queen first charted in the UK with their second album, Queen II, in 1974. Sheer Heart Attack later that year and A Night at the Opera in 1975 brought them international success. The latter featured "Bohemian Rhapsody", which stayed at number one in the UK for nine weeks and helped popularise the music video format. The band's 1977 album News of the World contained "We Will Rock You" and "We Are the Champions", which have become anthems at sporting events. By the early 1980s, Queen were one of the biggest stadium rock bands in the world. "Another One Bites the Dust" from The Game (1980) became their best-selling single, while their 1981 compilation album Greatest Hits is the best-selling album in the UK and is certified nine times platinum in the US. Their performance at the 1985 Live Aid concert is ranked among the greatest in rock history by various publications. In August 1986, Mercury gave his last performance with Queen at Knebworth, England. In 1991, he died of bronchopneumonia, a complication of AIDS. Deacon retired in 1997. Since 2004, May and Taylor have toured as "Queen +", with vocalists Paul Rodgers and Adam Lambert.Queen have been a global presence in popular culture for more than four decades. Estimates of their record sales range from 170 million to 300 million, making them one of the world's best-selling music artists. In 1990, Queen received the Brit Award for Outstanding Contribution to British Music. They were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2001, and with each member having composed hit singles all four were inducted into the Songwriters Hall of Fame in 2003. In 2005 they received the Ivor Novello Award for Outstanding Song Collection from the British Academy of Songwriters, Composers, and Authors, and in 2018 they were presented the Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award.
As Meddle was the necessary stepping stone for Pink Floyd's making of The Dark Side of the Moon, Sheer Heart Attack was the necessary stepping stone for Queen's making of A Night at the Opera. We work in a Bob Felder/Queen Elizabeth reference, a Chris Farley Heart Attack reference, a heart attack fries reference from Curb your enthusiasm, and Mr. Bean leaving a guy who's having a heart attack on a public curb. All very tasteless, all very fun. Enjoy!! Support the show
Frizz and Bob kick off Pride Month by rockin' to Queen's breakthrough album, Sheer Heart Attack, while we enjoy a hefty pour of Jane Walker. Join us for Freddian slips, one of Brian May's greatest guitar solos, fabulously theatrical storytelling, and even a little Willy Wonka.
Matt is on cover duty but enlists the help of listeners Sammy Martyr (Vocals) and Ben Wheeler (Drums) to do his cover of Stone Cold Crazy off of Sheer Heart Attack. The song's origins, cover versions and the meaning of Queen and scores are all discussed.Sam's band Martyrials can be seen on Tour https://www.martyrials.com/
Ian has to re-cover and re-visit this Freddie classic off of Sheer Heart Attack. We discuss In the Lap of the Gods... Revisited, the mood of the song, lyrical styles, place on the album and way more.
Time to focus on matters of the heart with tracks all related to the word 'love'.
One of Roger's fantastic contributions to News of the World, "Sheer Heart Attack" is Queen's one and only real punk number. And Roger wrote it years prior, during sessions for the album of the same name, when punk wasn't even a thing! In fact, this is almost a Roger solo track. He played several instruments, including bass (yeah, John sits this one out), and sings lead in the chorus. Freddie gives us major attitude in the verses, and Brian provides necessary guitar grit with impressive riffs. But, live? That's really where this song shines. --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/tater-thoughts/message
Our biggest episode cast yet (including my good friend Mason)! Only fitting for the biggest band yet! And while you may think of this as us starting off our relationship Queen with one of their lesser albums, I see it as us starting off our relationship with Queen with "We Will Rock You" & "We Are The Champions"! And "Get Down Make Love" & "It's Late"! And fricking "Sheer Heart Attack"! It's Queen, News of the World!
There's no hiding my love for this album, Queen's gorgeous and beautiful A Day at the Races. For the first time, the guys sound really comfortable and even more indulgent. We have the diversity of Sheer Heart Attack, the richness of Queen II, and the melodic and operatic tendencies of A Night at the Opera...all packed into the guys' fabulous fifth album. It's quite playful, but there are surprisingly darker moments, too. --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/tater-thoughts/message
Finally, bassist John Deacon reveals his first contribution with "Misfire"! This lovely and joyful little number is a great representation of John's love for pop and soul, and it fits perfectly among the diversity of Sheer Heart Attack. John provided not only bass, but most of this tune's catchy guitars. --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/tater-thoughts/message
