Locked On Pac-12 - Daily Podcast On Pac-12 Football & Basketball
With two #1 picks and another starter in the NFL, Lincoln Riley has earned his reputation as a college quarterback guru. He recruited very well during his time as the head coach at Oklahoma, but his ceiling on the recruiting trail is even higher at USC--trojan fans should expect him to eventually bring in top-5 caliber classes down to Los Angeles. He's proven more than capable of bringing in skill position players, but to make USC a dominant force once again he will have to find high-caliber players in the trenches as well. On this episode of Locked On Pac-12, Spencer McLaughlin is joined by John Garcia Jr., the Director of Recruiting for Sports Illustrated, to talk about the latest on the recruiting trail in the Pac-12. Led by 5-star QB Malachi Nelson, USC's recruiting class for 2023 is already off to a good start--and it would have its first defensive star if 5-star EDGE Jayden Wayne chooses the Trojans over other potential suitors. Meanwhile UCLA is already enjoying the benefits of newly-hired linebackers coach Ken Norton Jr. from the NFL, who was the primary recruiter for 2023 safety and potential hybrid player Ty Lee. Arizona State DT Jermayne Lole is actively testing the waters in the transfer portal, while also having said he would like to return to the Sun Devils for his final season of college football before going to the NFL. He is considering a rather bizarre combination of schools for his next stop should he leave ASU: Oregon, Louisville, Texas Tech, and Florida. Support Us By Supporting Our Sponsors! The NFL Combine is this week in Indianapolis and Pete Carroll was on the podium to take questions about some of the offseason changes to the Seahawks. Seattle's head coach talked about the decision to move on from Ken Norton Jr., the promotion of defensive line coach Clint Hurtt and the recruiting effort to get Sean Desai as the associate head coach. He said that they have been making some subtle changes on defense, but the moves now allow them to make significant changes that the defensive players will enjoy. Carroll talked about the decision to move on from Mike Solari and promote Andy Dickerson and answered more questions about the status of Russell Wilson with the team. He also offered some injury updates on DK Metcalf, Chris Carson and Quandre Diggs. Should the Seahawks address their running back position outside of possibly re-signing Rashaad Penny and hoping Chris Carson comes back healthy in 2022? Jake and Stacy get that answer from Michael Bumpus as he dials in to start the hour. In NFL Headlines, former Seattle defensive coordinator Ken Norton Jr. finds a landing spot in a familiar place. The Seattle Seahawks defense in recent years has been a far cry from the dominance of the LOB days. For the past five years, the defense has at its best lingered around middle of the pack, and at its worst, in the bottom fifteen of the league. With the firing of Ken Norton Jr. and the collection of coaches that Carroll is swirling around, we can get a better idea for adjustments Coach Carroll intends to bring into the fold for next season. By the appearances of it, Coach Carroll is evolving his old defense machinations. On today's show, I'm going to discuss some of those changes, and how it can help this Seahawks defense get back to being one of the better units in the NFL. Come join the discussion! Nearly two weeks after firing Ken Norton Jr., news has been quiet as the Seahawks look for his replacement at defensive coordinator behind the scenes. Hosts Corbin Smith and Nick Lee explain why the opening wave of head coaching hires in the NFL could help Seattle land its preferred coordinator, hand out their awards for offensive, defensive, and special teams play of the 2021 season, and examine several pending free agents who could come as part of a package deal with whoever the Seahawks pick to run their defense. Much-maligned Ken Norton Jr. has been let go by the Seahawks. A move many wanted to see amongst the 12's. The early list of replacements have been leaked and we'll take a look at these potential options. Who is an upgrade, who will be more of the same? Will a new coordinator matter considering this is still Coach Carroll's defense, his '67 Mustang that he only takes out on Sundays, and never goes up 35 miles-per-hour. We will discuss. Gregg Bell of the Tacoma Tribune joined Matt and Blake to help set up the match in Minnesota this weekend. Started off, though, by talking about Hawks D-Coordinator, Ken Norton Jr. and his fathers fights versus Ali. Gregg summed up the matchup on defence for the Hawks, after Henry ran through them last week. He talked about Josh Gordon and if he might fit into this team. Pete Carroll would be open to having him back if he is officially reinstated. Talked about DK Metcalf and his revealing moment when he admitted that all the trash talk got into his kitchen. He talked about the running game and who is more dominant. Rick Dhaliwal, Canucks Insider, joined the guys and for some reason the conversation started off by talking about hair gel. Moving along… Rick told us what he is hearing about Travis Hamonic. It sounds like he isn’t in Vancouver at the moment. Rick talked about what the Canucks could be thinking if Hamonic won’t be making it for the start of the season. Our Canucks Reporter, Jeff Paterson joined to talk about day 2 of training camp. He thinks the scrimmage could have used 40 and 43. JPat ran through a number of players and how they are handling camp and will get into the lineup. He talked about Podkolzin and his grasp of the English language. He handled himself really, really well in that situation. He is having a lot of fun out on the ice. Says it is pretty clear that he understands everything that the coaches are throwing at him. JPat talked about Jack Rathbone. Says it is nice to have NHL games on his resume but he really hasn’t experienced the NHL life in his 8 games from last year. There may be some games out in Abby this season as he is waiver-exempt. Talked about Olli Juolevi and the thought that there just isn’t an NHL defensemen in him. Jeff talked about the upcoming preseason games and what we should expect. The show wrapped up with Take 5 Thursday, Friday edition. Who wins and breaks the season tie, Matt or Blake?See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
