In 1915, Marcel Duchamp bought a snow shovel at a hardware store in New York City. He inscribed his signature and the date on its wooden handle. On the evening this episode is released, the fourth version of this classic “ready-made,” which he titled “In Advance of the Broken Arm,” will be auctioned off at Christie's during their 20th Century Evening Sale. It's estimated to sell for $2 million to $3 million. How could a simple snow shovel be valued at such a steep price? Was Duchamp an unmatched genius, or a product of some of the biggest museums' dirtiest little secrets: the results of pure, unadulterated capitalism?Northeastern University professor, essayist, poet, and editor Eunsong Kim has illuminated the underlying influences of industrial capitalism and racism behind some of the most prized museum collections in her new book, The Politics of Collecting: Race and the Aestheticization of Property. She traces how Duchamp was brought to prominence through the patronage of collectors Louise and Walter Arensberg, heirs of a fortune wrought by the steel industry. Their family operated steel mills in the same setting as titans such as Andrew Carnegie and Henry Clay Frick, whose wealth also underlies their own valuable art collections. And as it turns out, the “death of the author,” celebrated in conceptual art like that of Duchamp, is a convenient idea for the ultrawealthy. Devaluing labor pairs well with violent crackdowns on striking workers to deny them adequate pay. Or even Frederick Winslow Taylor's development of “scientific management,” a system that is still cited today but is based on the idealization of the slave plantation. How much of the Modernist archive was canonized by union-busting bosses? How much of conceptual art in the 20th and 21st centuries has been buoyed by the reverence of scientific management? In this episode, Editor-in-chief Hrag Vartanian sits down to talk with Kim about her new volume, which challenges generations of unquestioned received knowledge and advocates for a new vision of art beyond cultural institutions. In the process, they discuss the craft of writing, how a White artist was counted as a Black artist at the 2014 Whitney Biennial, and how Marcel Duchamp got away with selling bags of air.Subscribe to Hyperallergic on Apple Podcasts, and anywhere else you listen to podcasts.—Subscribe to Hyperallergic NewslettersBecome a member

It is possible to live life feeling like we deserve to be in pain so it can be a reminder of our weaknesses. We "want" this reminder because we think it will help us have the strength and courage to become better. Unfortunately that isn't what pain is meant to do. The pain is an indicator that something might be broken and to do what it takes to fix it as soon as possible. This episode describes the similarities and differences of unseen physical pain and unseen emotional pain, and what healing can look like for both. Healing from a broken bone usually requires an X-Ray, while healing from an emotional injury requires a different perspective of what our expectations are. On today's episode, I talk to musician Marnie Stern. Originally from New York City, Marnie didn't start out trying to pursue music professionally, and her first album In Advance of the Broken Arm came out in 2007 on Kill Rock Stars when she was 30-years-old. It instantly garnered acclaim, and was followed by This Is It and I Am It and You Are It and So Is That and He Is It and She Is It and It Is It and That Is That in 2008, a self-titled album two years later and The Chronicles of Marnia in 2013. The previous year, she made Spin Magazine's list of "100 Greatest Guitarists of all Time", and after Seth Meyers took over Late Night, Marnie eventually joined the 8G Band for a number of years. Most recently, Marnie has recorded her first album in ten years; The Comeback Kid is out now on Joyful Noise, and it's fantastic! Hey ... look at you go Laura. Two solo episodes in one month! Today I'm sharing what happened to me when I broke my arm earlier this year. On the surface it was evident the bone needed to heal, but what came through as that bone healing happened, was the opportunity to go deeper into what the IMPACT of that injury had on me. My body My heart My emotions My sense of what's possible and who I am in the world. Maybe you've not broken a bone and so this would seem irrelevant to you; however, haven't we all had an injury of sorts (emotionally, physically, financially, spiritually)? When the injury heals, the impact remains. This is a discussion about healing the impact and how to use the resonance of injury to go deeper into your own healing. Areas I touch on: The details of breaking my arm in August 2023 The process of navigating the medical system here in Costa Rica Importance of taking control of your healing process even if you have professionals around you with more degrees, certification and letters behind their name. Importance of persisting, tuning in, and being fully supported for fast and complete healing Healing process unlocks new levels of being and sets off new trajectories Healing as peeling back layers of an onion- each layer of healing reveals deeper issues held in DNA, cells, and energetic grids Release and resolution of issues leads to the next layer of healing Role of alternative healing modalities in managing the body during healing Broken arm as a catalyst for deeper healing and changes in engagement with others Understanding the messages and pain the body communicates Choosing substance and deep learning over floating on the surface Dealing with the pain and acceptance of the injury's impact The IMPACT of an injury long after the acute injury heals Notable Quotes: On Healing through Discomfort: "I am outwardly and very consciously and inwardly asking my body what messages it has for me. What does this pain represent? Other things that have come up are let me think, what parts of me wants to be healed in this moment? Who am I in this discomfort? That's a good one. Who am I in this discomfort? And then just the one that I turn away from, which is just so good all the time is how can I support myself right now? Like, what do I need right now? And occurs to me that when my arm healed and the impact lingered, this became like the access point for me to come into some deeper healing. And I really think that whether we are talking about a broken bone or we're talking about a broken heart it can be really the same thing. That it's possible that when the acuteness like that - in the moment, the loudest voice in the room heals, there's an impact that can linger. And it's the impact that can create such a deep imprint in your being. And I need to address the impact, I need to address the imprint."— Laura Foster On The Healing Process: "Healing is like an onion...with each layer of our own healing, we access something deeper, something that we've done a better job of pushing further down."— Laura Foster On Unlocking New Trajectories: "And this kind of work really, I think, unlocks us for the next level, like setting us off into new trajectories, new timelines, new levels of being."— Laura Foster On Taking Charge of Healing: "But it's also the responsibility. It's your responsibility. It's my responsibility to take charge of my own healing and to have agency over my body."— Laura Foster On The Power of Self-Healing: "I am the healer and it's important to listen to my own intuition'"— Laura Foster Timestamp: [00:04:40] Left arm injury prompted immediate home treatment. [00:06:27] Not a chiropractic radiologist but important details. [00:11:05] Private healthcare in Canada offers easier access. [00:14:55] Bone healing requires immobilization, but also movement. [00:17:07] Taking responsibility for healing is vital. [00:19:57] Arm break spoke loudest, but not most significant. Other healing layers needed attention. [00:24:01] Infiltrated thoughts; deep, introspective questioning; admission. [00:27:13] Body messages: pain's representation, healing, support. [00:31:03] New connections bring growth, despite goodbyes and fear. THIS WEEK!! We delve deep into the psyche of what it means to desire. To WANT. To want brains. To want powers. To want the end of it all. To want equality and justice. And sure, it's all in context of our wacky universe, but it's definitely the through line of this episode, and I'm TOTALLY NOT OVERTHINKING IT. B! B! B! B! B!
I talk about a nasty injury, fight or flight, and a revealing video of the week. Cheers!

Wayne Roberts. Miracle. It was mind blowing to meet Wayne. I was told he had a tragic ski accident just a couple of months prior to a meeting with him and he was walking, talking, and mixing with a group of people without much physical impairment or any mental impact. Wayne looked normal as can be and yet, Wayne had wrecked while skiing at Solitude Ski area on an icy double black diamond run and even being a ski instructor, he went down hard! Wayne hit so hard on his face that it broke his neck and then slammed into a grove of trees head first where the damage continued. Wayne guarded his head with his arm and when he smashed into the trees, it broke his arm completely and his back! 21 bones broke in total. 4-5 broken ribs and bruised lungs on top of that. Wayne's son Dillon was by his side the whole time and remained stoic and brave at the age of 14. This story resonates pain, healing, and bravery + love. So happy Wayne is here today to tell us his story and is healing well. Tune in to hear his story. Thanks Wayne for your story!! --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/bob-howard9/message

This episode contains SPOILERS for "Jurassic World: Dominion" Jack Ewins, previous guest from our ‘Pod of Tea' episode and host of the YouTube Channel "TerrorDome 3000," joins Candy and Ashley to discuss the final chapter in the “Jurassic” series, “Jurassic World: Dominion.” Jack has worked on the website marketing campaign for the past three ‘World' films. He gives the inside scoop on how a broken arm (plus one very well-timed tweet) snowballed him from a long-time super-fan to eventually being called a ‘partner' in the ‘Jurassic' Journey. Topics include MAJOR spoilers for “JW: Dominion,” behind-the-scenes stories, the backstory of how he and his team created the marketing videos found on DinoTracker.com, his feelings about the series ending, and his thoughts on where the Jurassic Universe could go from here. Friend of the show and wife to Jack, Emma joins us toward the end of the interview to weigh in on just how much ‘Jurassic Park' has affected her life, including the couple's wedding vows! Break the Stigma - The ADAMHS Board of Tuscarawas and Carroll Counties
On this episode, Polly Patin-Mellor joins the show. Polly is a member of the ADAMHS Board board of directors, a role she's held for 24 years. She is a mental health consumer, which means she has had some type of behavior or mental health treatment in the ADAMHS Board system of care.Polly shares her experiences with mental health and how the ADAMHS Board has impacted her life. Listen as she shares her story that began with postpartum depression after the birth of her son. She came to realize that her mind was, as she says, broken. And so she set out to get it fixed.Polly talks about the stigma surrounding mental health illnesses and the self-pity, shame, and blame that can accompany that stigma. When Polly asked her doctor why mental illness had to strike her, the doctor replied, "Why not you? Why shouldn't you have to deal with problems in this world?" And that made Polly realize that her mental illness wasn't her fault or the fault of anyone else; mental illness was an unfortunate circumstance like a broken arm, and circumstances can be dealt with and overcome. This story is truly inspiring. You'll feel Polly's passion on her mission to break the stigma of mental illness.Want to learn more about the ADAMHS Board?Visit www.adamhtc.orgEmail office@adamhtc.orgwww.getlevelpod.com/adamhsMental health affects us all differently. Let's come together and break the stigma today.
In this episode of the Talking Sound Podcast host Christopher Jordan is joined by Dominic Lavoie, the Maine musical artist and visionary behind the new digital happening that is the album Wave with a Broken Arm featuring the single and video Skeletons at the Feast. Beginning with a reel of analog tape and a bunch of notes in his head Dominic began a journey two years ago that has now culminated in the creation of not only a fantastic album, but a full blown conceptualized video spectacular to be premiered Halloween night on his website. How was one artist able to rally together not only the musical talent, but the director, budget and infrastructure to accomplish this near herculean feat on his own dime? What challenges came forth as Dominic trod into new grounds of not only production but promotion as well?
