Clients often find coaching for binge eating more impactful than therapy because coaches with lived experience can better understand and provide tangible tools. Therapy may not address the specific needs of those struggling with binge eating, such as learning to stop seeing food as bad or paying attention to hunger cues. Coaching with Lorna offers specific tools to stop binge eating and become more mindful with food. She provide a balance of grace and self-compassion with tough love, holding clients accountable and reminding them of their potential. The Eating Coach is back with a series of short 5-6 min episode for your pleasure during the month of July. Today: How junk food is an anaesthetic (as well as being damn hard to spell!). Check out the Facebook group where I will be posting more content. https://www.facebook.com/groups/eatingcoachgroup Many people understand that emotional eating is trying to do the job of managing life, a bit like a sticking plaster or band aid. But what I have realised is that it serves a much more subtle and invisibly powerful function - that of an anaesthetic. If you've ever come down from any kind of high (be it from food or overstimulation) and used a takeaway to fill that emotional gap - you are using food as an anaesthetic. If you binge because you are dreading the meeting with person X - you are using food as an anaesthetic. If you use sugar as dutch courage before an interview in the same way alcoholics nip into the pub - you are using food as an anaesthetic. The question is - does the anaesthetic ever work? If it did, then you would have renewed vigour, boss that meeting and ace the interview - you would be more confident with the help of food. Of course not. No anaesthetic can ever do more than a temporary job. That's what they are meant for. Great for dental work, rotten for emotional eating. So the question to ask yourself before you anaesthetise yourself via the deli aisle is this: Is it worth it? The Eating Coach podcast is back and in this episode I have two more  questions you can ask to alienate yourself from that anaesthetic. Cheers now! I talk openly about my own anxiety around my appetite, and what happened when I actually decided to experience hunger intentionally. I was very surprised at what I discovered.   Part One: Why You Might Have a Fear of Hunger Childhood experiences. Food was used to give adults power over you. Food as a way to Numb yourself out In both scenarios, hunger can act as a very persuasive PR tool being used by your child rebel or the part of you that feels it is essential to numb out I managed overeating a long time ago, but lockdown created a very powerful PR for my compulsion because I was doing too much. I dissolved Some key relationships which created lots of fear. I perceived genuine hunger which was not always genuenuine. about managing my life   Part Two: What Happened When I Faced My Fear of Hunger  I realised that hunger is not a fire, it is a tide  I realised that hunger is plastic I discuss the role that ghrelin (the hunger hormone plays) here and the evolutionary reasoning behind the plastic nature of hunger   Part Three: Over To You Ideas for you to get going on your fear of hunger RESOURCES Intermittent fasting 2.0 episode https://eatingcoach.libsyn.com/ec-177-your-internal-hunger-games The Metronome https://www.theshiftinside.com/metronome/ Fear of Hunger coaching programme https://www.theshiftinside.com/tide/

How many “dieters” do we have out there? How many of you get frustrated with diets that aren’t working for you?  How many would love to have a lifestyle that supports their optimal health? My guess is there are a lot of you out there and today’s episode is for you.  I am so excited to bring on Kara Trochta, Registered Dietician, Eating Coach and Food Therapist.   As a former binge eater and self-proclaimed emotional eater who spent years calculating calories and painfully tried to eat perfectly to achieve the societal standard of health only to fail time and time again; her own frustration and confusion led her to start a practice to end people's struggle between their food choices, their weight and their feelings of worth. Kara’s goal is to help people end the stressful and guilt-laden eating chaos, and realize they can have a healthy relationship with food, eat the foods they enjoy, and not only be healthy, but happier than they've ever been. She is a wife, mom of 3 kiddos who loves feeling good in her own skin. Kara enjoys personal development and being a student of her own mind and body. She loves being outdoors, cooking, reading, barre & yoga class.   Wow! I’m Karen Schaible.  www.karenschaible.com I’m a Retired Registered Nurse working at the Bariatric Clinic, Certified Psychology of Eating Coach and Certified Weight and Life Coach, and I was in the exact same place as you are now! I struggled with my weight for over 30 years. The struggle felt like it would never end. I felt stuck, frustrated and disappointed that yet another year would go by and I my weight didn’t change. Overall those years, I tried every diet I could get my hands on. I knew what to eat so then “why couldn’t I just eat what I was supposed to,” I lost and gained 50 pounds so many times only to gain it back every time and usually more than I lost. Losing and gaining weight was exhausting and discouraging. Despite all of this I still thought about losing weight ALL THE TIME! I did an excellent job of beating myself up for overeating and wishing “if only I had more willpower!” I cancelled plans to go out with friends or go to parties because I felt so fat or didn’t think I could control what I would eat. Trying on new clothes in stores was so painful, I would wind up devastated and in tears at times. I would ask myself, “What’s wrong with me?” “You’ll always be fat,” “You can’t lose the weight, so why bother anymore.” I missed out on so much of my life worrying about how I looked and what other people would think about me. The thing was I was a Registered Nurse, a mom of 3 beautiful children and yet I couldn’t succeed at losing weight, I felt like such a failure. Through all of this, I was determined to figure it out. One day I decided to do something different than anything I had tried before, and that was the start of my losing 100 pounds permanently. I put all my focus and energy into not only the food but finding a process that helped me to take off the weight as well as change the habits and limiting beliefs that had kept me stuck for too long. Today, my life is more than I ever imagined it could be. I am so grateful for all the “failures” with dieting because it taught me so much. I have learned how to lose weight without counting calories or excessive exercising. I exercise because I want to, not because I have to. I eat the foods I want when I want; there is no deprivation or restriction. Food and my weight no longer rule my life. The answer came in understanding the reason WHY I struggled with food and my weight and committing to a new way of thinking and living. With this simple approach and the right tools, I have completely and permanently transformed my weight and my life. I want to show you how to do the same thing. You can create a life that is amazing in every way. If I can do it, you can too. I am not an exception or any more special than you; I have the REAL Solution that works. I love helping women get to a place where they are eating healthy foods, taking care of themselves and discovering real freedom and peace around food and their bodies. Let’s work on this together because anything you’ve done, there’s an excellent chance that I’ve done it too. I’ve been where you are, and I know that I can help you end your struggle with food and your weight. Everything I’ll teach you, I’ve done, other women I work with have done, it works. As your life and weight loss coach, I will give you a safe place where we work together through it all and believe it or not doing this, weight loss we will be pretty much be effortless. Working on all that has been holding you back is where the real key is.

It's time to own our abnormality! In today's show, I want to fight the oft-repeated phrase I just want to be normal. Whether they are talking about their eating, or their personality, I believe that there is no normal. Let's explore this. This is a replay of episode 22 of my other podcast, The Eating Coach. Although the focus is is on food, I believe there is a lot of useful information here. Being out of control can prompt a desire to be "normal". However, it has such wildly differing definitions throughout history and across the globe today. This word is nothing but the agreed upon beliefs and traditions of the people around us.  It really is an expression of a different need that all empaths will relate to. In this episode, I divide this concept into two separate parts. I explain what these are, as well as: *The phrase that means two completely different things, depending on how you say it *The new normal you really do not want to be a part of *How normal equals mediocrity   RESOURCES https://www.theshiftinside.com/lifesaver/ Hear more episodes of The Eating Coach by searching for it in your podcast app, or visit https://www.theshiftinside.com/podcast/ The Buzzfeed article on what is normal around the world and throughout history: https://www.buzzfeed.com/hgrant/8-jaw-dropping-traditions-from-around-the-world?utm_term=.gr84oOyXr#.spW0YJRgl SRINI PILLAY's Book https://drsrinipillay.com/resource/life-unlocked-7-revolutionary-lessons-overcome-fear/

Jennifer Carr is a London born, Barcelona based Behavioural Eating Coach and Plant Based Retreat Cook. Training at The Institute of the Psychology of Eating in Boulder, Colorado in 2017, today Jennifer coaches from her home in Barcelona in person and online, helping people to address an array of body image and eating challenges. Through a blend of mindfulness based psychology, mirror work, energy medicine and firsthand experience, Jennifer’s ultimate goal is to support people in understanding their belief systems and patterns around eating and self image, to enable the coaching journey to be one of awareness, discovery and ultimately, re-learning how to nourish the mind-body for pleasure and health. From Mind + Plate Online: "My journey with dieting began at 18, triggered by a turbulent set of personal circumstances and a deep belief that I was not enough. Dabbling with zero fat foods and endless bowls of steamed vegetables quickly led to weight loss and attention, which translated a distorted truth in my mind: “I’m worthy”. The path back had its fair share of potholes. And as anyone who’s overcome an eating disorder will know, it’s often not linear. I now regard my own ‘road back’ as one of the most valuable experiences, because it forced me to let go of who I thought I was and become who I am. In so doing, I found my ‘true north’ as a certified transformational eating coach and more recently, reiki practitioner. I believe our world is in a deep crisis of perfectionism that’s fuelled by “not-enoughness”. Our culture teaches us that if we can just look a certain way, or diet a certain way, that happiness is within our grasp. It’s time to unlearn this idea. It’s time to embrace food with a peaceful, balanced attitude that frees us up to nourishment and pleasurable eating without extremes. Working with me, you will rewrite your food script – and discover a liberating new approach to your body and your life." jen@mindandplate.com Instagram and Facebook @mindandplate www.mindandplate.com --- Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/amy-sapola/support

To go from that place of “I know” to “I actually treat my body in the way that she deserves, in the way that she really needs to be taken care of,” there’s a huge gap in there for most of us.– Nina Manolson On this episode of the Plan Simple Meals Podcast, I’m delighted to have Nina Manolson back. She’s been on the podcast twice before, and I always love talking with her. She’s a holistic health coach and health and wellness coach, and I love her approach to food and body. We start off talking about compassionate eating and how just saying the word compassion can help you soften. But we often don’t extend compassion to ourselves, and then we add a push dynamic to our relationship with our food and our body, which leads to tightness, restriction, and striving. Compassionate eating isn’t about your eating plan … it’s about how you treat yourself with whatever you are eating.  A lot of us know what we need to do, but we get caught up in managing food and body, but the management model isn’t very successful. And what if you don’t know what you should be eating? It comes back to compassion and listening to yourself and what you need.  We talk about:  Living “next door to your body” and how living in your body helps you learn what you need Getting support to learn to interpret what our body is trying so hard to tell us Recognizing that some experiences don’t serve us—even if they might seem healthy on the surface (Nina shares her conclusions about a rock climbing trip that wasn’t serving her) Being body current—responding to the body you have now, not the one you want to have next summer or the one you had back before kids or 30 years ago Hormonal changes, how our body is always changing Developing a compassionate relationship with yourself and quieting your “mean mirror” voice BIO Nina Manolson is a certified holistic health coach, a board-certified health & wellness coach, a certified Psychology of Eating Coach and Teacher, and she has a masters in counseling psychology. She is passionate about helping women end their food and body struggles and begin healthy, vibrant living that becomes a habit and easily fits into their busy lives. LINKS We Got The Body Thing Wrong Compassionate Eating Course Get Along With Your Body with Nina Manolson Eating on Purpose with Nina Manolson A Day in the Life of Nina Manolson Nina’s Decadent Dandy Drink Doable Changes from this episode: LISTEN TO YOUR “MEAN MIRROR” VOICE. To start being more compassionate with yourself, start simply by listening to the conversation that is currently going on with you and your body. Notice that conversation and put a label on it: “Oh, that’s my inner critic” or “That’s my mean mirror voice.” We need to hear that voice so that we can start to cultivate a voice of compassion or kindness toward ourselves.  CALL YOUR BODY BY A LOVING NAME. To get into a relationship with your body, stop referring to your body as It. Start talking to yourself kindly, using the word darling or lovey or some other name you’d use with someone you love. ASK: WOULD I SAY THAT TO SOMEBODY ELSE. When you find yourself talking critically to yourself, ask, “Would I say that to my daughter?” or “Would I say that to a friend?” or “What would I do if I heard somebody else say that to my daughter or a friend?” Use those cues to help you find a kinder way to talk to yourself.

Our problem today is that we have too much nutrition knowledge, and we don't know what nutrition knowledge to focus on. So this video today I'm going to go over three guidelines which I feel are the most important. 1. We have eating unprocessed or foods that are 1,000 years old. 2. We have to get into what it means to have an authentic, caring, respectful, responsive relationship with our body – instead of managing her all the time. – Nina Manolson On this episode of the Plan Simple Meals Podcast, I’m really excited to talk again with Nina Manolson, health and wellness coach who works with women around body image and their relationship with their bodies. She has so much to say about what we eat and why and how we feel about ourselves. We talk about rules about eating and how they end up backfiring because we react to the restriction. Nina says we need to start with naming our body dissatisfaction. And then we need to name the body management things we do (paleo, keto, raw food, Weight Watchers, …). This isn’t self-care.   So what do we need to do? “We really have to bring to the table more of deep listening. What does my body want and need? And sometimes to get to that deep listening, it takes some healing, it takes some work because many women, somewhere along the line, got divorced from their body.” Are you divorced from you body? Do you need to reconnect and build that relationship? That’s what we get deeper into. We talk about: The many things that make us feel separated from our own bodies—birth, nursing, medical crisis, trauma Embracing the complexity, intricacy of who we are and honoring our aging and our changing body There’s nothing wrong with saying that sometimes food is what I need for some emotional solace, but we need other tools beyond that The importance of listening to what’s right for your body Learning to shift that so that self-care actually doesn’t feel like another chore? How the process of working with your relationship with your food and with your body opens a door to so much more BIO Nina Manolson is a certified holistic health coach, a board certified health & wellness coach, a certified Psychology of Eating Coach and Teacher, and an author. She is passionate about helping women end their food and body struggles and begin healthy, vibrant living that becomes a habit and easily fits into their busy lives. LINKS http://ninamanolson.com/body-peace

http://eatonpurpose.ninamanolson.com Eating on Purpose with Nina Manolson Doable Changes from this episode: NAME BODY MANAGEMENT. Just getting aware of the body management thoughts and things you do is an amazing start. Just start noticing and calling out things like “I’ll start on Monday” or talking about your latest diet or “I’m cutting out carbs” or whatever it is. Say, “I see you body management.” HELLO TECHNIQUE. Nina suggests that hand on the heart and hello goes miles towards starting the relationship with your body. She also talks about saying hello to food to get into a relationship with food. And then Hello pleasure. Use her Hello Technique to start to connect to your body and your food instead of just having rules about what you do and don’t eat. ASK WHAT DO I NEED? Ask your body what it really needs? Nina notes that this is a tricky question and that learning to really hear what would make you feel most at ease, most at home in you body or nourish you the most is a process. But start by asking the question and seeing who shows up at the table, what answers you get.

We've all played it – and let's face it, it's total pants (as we say here in good ol'Blighty).   MAIN SECTION In today's episode I look at how what we eat can impact our mental health. As important as the information are certain caveats that you need to be aware of. The main focus is on what foodstuffs we can introduce to improve our state of mind and emotional regulation. Included is an extract from my new audiobook Natural Antidepressants. You can buy it today (link below) or…. …alternatively you can hear it over two episodes (this week and next) of Eating Coach Extra – these are paid episodes that will be coming out every other week.  Access Eating Coach Extra here: https://www.patreon.com/EatingCoach To celebrate the launch, I am publishing the first two (i.e. the whole of Natural Antidepressants) as follows: Part 1 – today Part 2 – next Wednesday 13th For a low monthly fee you will now be able to hear new episodes every single week if you include the main free Eating Coach episodes.   In This Episode: We’re so happy to have Harriet Morris from The Eating Coach podcast on the show today! We talk about how she is more focused on behavior concerning eating, as opposed to weight loss. She talks about her process and says upfront working with her is work (but it’s deep work that really does help). Harriet is not a dietician and we talk how she’s different. “The great thing about an experiment is you can’t fail or succeed at an experiment. It can only give you data.” - Harriet Morris Food addiction vs. sugar addiction. Fat can act as a comfort to us. Harriet gives us one of her Cravings Busters! She doesn’t have weigh-ins with her clients, but she does daily check-ins for goals! We talk about how to get those good feelings OTHER than finding them in food. We take some questions from our Live chat. Go ahead and post in the group when you’ve treated yourself instead of binging! Make a list of non-food comforts for yourself! Harriet also gives us a Slow Eating Game to try, as well! (John took out the silence, don’t worry.) Emily finally gave us a #WinningWednesday jingle! Thank goodness for #WinningWednesday post. Here are the highlights of my interview with Gina Tager: Mind Body Eating Coach on Women Developing Brilliance.Who is Gina Tager?Gina Tager is a Body Mind Eating Coach, certified by the Institute for the Psychology of Eating. She helps people heal their relationship with food, body, and Life itself through self-knowledge and body wisdom. Her work is based on HAES (Health at Every Size) a movement that promotes body diversity. She is passionate about helping people who are ready to stop the battle with their weight and their body in order to start embracing who they really are so they can create lasting well-being.Overcoming darknessIt was her personal motivation that brought her to this field. After cleaning out a lot of old beliefs, she started embracing the idea that you can be healthy and happy at every size/body type.Having had personal experiences with body and weight issues, she now can channel that knowledge to women who come to her that previously struggled in shame and silence. This empathy and understanding provide a deep connection, which in itself is very healing.Lightbulb momentBecause body diversity is such an ingrain value for Tager, she translates that to other aspects of her life and career. Meaning, she believes there is no 1 right way to do anything. She is also the first to say that even HAES may not work for every body and that's OK. You have to start with what “is” already. You need to look at the present and know what already exists and work from there. She encourages you to stop for a second, do a fast check-in and see what motivates you. Ask what feeds you? What makes your soul sing? What are the different ways you can do it naturally?Find the way that feels most comfortable to you.Shining a bright lightGina believes that the number of coaching hours per week, the size of her body, the size of her bank account, etc. are not the only determining factors of success. She says we really need to look at other elements that contribute to well-being and happiness.I love that Gina is not attached to titles or “shoulds.” Her integrative approach includes several self-care tools that she always personally vets before sharing wisdom on it.She tailors her work to each client, using intuition to guide the ship where it will best serve and benefit the specific person, going as deep as the client chooses. When it comes to accepting the various messages in her work, be it on the topic of spirituality or sexuality, Tager says, "Everyone is free to say I want a bite of this or no thank you.”Her next big projectGina and her team are working on an e-course.This is exciting for the people that are interested in mind-body eating coaching but for whatever reason are unable to have one-on-one coaching sessions. This way they can start embodying the knowledge and start turning it into action. It'll be launching at the end of January 2019.I loved my time with Gina becauseShe is so passionate about healing, but my favorite quality is that she executes with sweetness and non-judgment. She doesn't follow trends, she follows what feels natural and in the moment. I love that!Connect with Gina: https://ginatager.com.mx/

In this episode, I explain how I used Harry Potter to help a client deal with her suicidal urges. Please note that my area of expertise is compulsive and binge eating, not suicide – so take everything you hear as anecdote, rather than expert advice. In addition, my client has never attempted to take her own life – we are talking about passive suicidal ideation (i.e. dealing with thoughts such as ‘I don’t want to be here anymore’ rather than any active intention to end her life).   4 min 30: HOW TO CHANNEL SUICIDAL URGES USING THE DEATHLY HALLOWS I talk about the work I did with my client around safely channelling and releasing her desire to die via the 3 chapters The Forest Again, King’s Cross and The Flaw In The Plan from Harry Potter and The Deathly Hallows. This is all about the power of imagination instead of well-worn clichés that try and fail to appeal to logic. Sharing Harry’s terror and hopelessness then return to Hogwarts allowed Sophie to connect with her desire to live and resilience. Hogwart’s favourite half-giant teaches us three important life lessons throughout the course of the seven books. What are they? Loyalty? Being a good father figure? Well, although these are traits that many people think of, I believe they are least interesting for our purposes here. Instead, let’s talk about: #1 Building Better Boundaries. Hagrid is an anti-teacher in this respect – he shows us what happens when we fail to build healthy boundaries. This is apparent not just in his naïve love of all things monster, but in the varied and horribly hilarious examples I give from the whole series. #2 Acknowledge your strengths. We all know Hagrid is physically strong, but he is more resilient and mentally tough than anyone – especially Hagrid – gives him credit for. I discuss exactly how, and how to start giving YOURSELF credit. #3 ??? Wouldn’t we all just love a Time Turner? How fabulous would it be to go back in time and wipe out that awful interview, the person you wish you had never met, or the job you would avoid like the plague if you had your time over again.   However, I believe that the REAL fantasy pull of the Time Turner is two-fold: to help us turn away from the inevitable forward march of time and to avoid having to feel regret.   Sorry, ain’t gonna happen. In this episode, I discuss how JK Rowling’s very interesting limitations on this invention gives us a clue to why we are better off without them (and Harry and co. helpfully smashed the lot in the department of mysteries at the end of book 5 anyway) and how we can neutralise regret instead.   Olivia from The Super Serious Social Justice Podcast drops in to give her a few of her favourite bits of all things Potter.     RESOURCES: To contact me or record your audio to be on the show: http://www.theshiftinside.com/harry/   https://www.pottermore.com/writing-by-jk-rowling/time-turner   http://www.theshiftinside.com/podcast-me-too-release-your-trauma-and-put-food-out-of-a-job-it-was-never-meant-to-do/   Super Serious Social Justice Podcast:  https://www.sssjcast.com/   The Eating Coach podcast: https://itunes.apple.com/gb/podcast/the-eating-coach/id1258258375 In the USA https://itunes.apple.com/us/podcast/the-eating-coach/id1258258375 SFX By www.zapsplat.com

Today's topic came about in 1928, and in the span of time since then, many things have been said to be the greatest thing since its invention. The more I read about it, and how easy it made people's lives, the more I realize the idiom about how great it is isn't too far off the mark. Because of this topic, sandwiches were made faster, toasters increased in sales and became a common wedding present, and breakfasts became easier to make on the fly. I'm your host, Emily Prokop, and this is The Story Behind Sliced Bread. What surprising lessons can Harry Potter's hideous relatives have to offer us? The hidden benefits of jealousy, that's what. Another shot of inspiration from superfan Harriet Morris who can seemingly find not exactly a font of wisdom from Privet drive, but some backwards, unintended life advice Aunt Petunia and Uncle Vernon never intended to give their nephew, but is writ large in neo lights whenever either of them open their (rather mealy) mouths.   RESOURCES Episode 2 (mistakenly I called it episode one) about Harry's shadows: http://harrypottersavedmylife.com/2-harry-and-self-acceptance   Contact me at http://www.theshiftinside.com/harry/   The Eating Coach podcast on iTunes is at  UK - https://itunes.apple.com/gb/podcast/the-eating-coach/id1258258375 USA - https://itunes.apple.com/us/podcast/the-eating-coach/id1258258375

The 31st October is massively significant in the Potterverse, and even more meaningful for us – if we look deep enough.   How we do it is by unearthing the strange paradoxes that occur every Halloween to Harry and his friends. His parents died on this day – but it is also the day that he, Ron and Hermione join forces as a powerful trio that will eventually work together to defeat Voldemort.   These conflicts of meaning continue throughout the whole series – listen today to decipher what they can signify for us.   QUOTE OF THE EPISODE …actually we have two quotes. One non-JKR (sacrilege? Maybe, but it’s worth it) plus Harry buying books in Flourish and Botts.   RESOURCES Check out my Eating Coach podcast https://itunes.apple.com/us/podcast/the-eating-coach/id1258258375

The secret to losing weight once and for all! Every time you’ve ever tried to lose weight, you’ve done it wrong. We’ve all done it. We’ve all been there. You go through a weight loss program, you deny yourself everything you love, you torture yourself at the gym, and you lose weight. You think you’ve done a good thing for your health, for your life, for your family. And then the weight comes back. Maybe even some extra on top. You have failed. Again. You’re sure of it. Everyone else loses the weight and keeps it off. Normal people don’t have problems with their weight. Normal people just manage this without worry. You are a freak of nature… EXCEPT THAT YOU’RE NOT.
