This episode began with a discussion of 2009 as a watershed year before major belief in diseases tied to genetics began to be replaced by ones tied to mitochondria, food and the role of insulin. Michael Krasny brought up the link of diabetes to genetics and Dr. Bob Lustig indicated that the causation factor is only 15%, whereupon he talked about genes and obesity and different kinds of fat and fat and sugar followed by Krasny asking his reaction to the appointment of Robert F Kennedy Junior as the head of HHS. Dr. Lustig revealed that he refused an offer to head NIH.A listener asked Dr. Lustig about glyphosate in the food supply and another about processed food in school lunches, which prompted Krasny to ask about processed and ultra-processed food. Dr. Lustig spoke of food industry strategies and the USDA. Krasny then asked him about eating habits and lifespan in Japan as well as fructose and calories and Dr. Lustig spoke about body temperature being down in the U.S. and a connection to mitochondrial dysfunction. Krasny went back to an interview he did with Nobel laureate James Watson in which Watson mentioned longevity and his Norwegian mitochondria and Krasny then asked Lustig about sugar and fruit, which prompted Lustig to pinpoint sugar as a primary cause of Alzheimer's and to speak about ways to mitigate fructose. Lustig then spoke of the effects of sugar in a 1953 UK study which followed sugar rationing. Michael Krasny brought up arguments against "the demonization of sugar" and seeing it as toxic and addictive and Dr. Lustig responded with an adamant defense of the dangers of sugar, including its addictive power and its toxicity.

Welcome to part five of the B.rad podcast highlight series! In this episode, we dive into the juicy, interesting, and possibly controversial topic of diet. You will hear quotes from some of my favorite guests and key moments over the years, focusing on my “meat and fruit” lifestyle—the animal-based, protein-centric, nutrient-dense eating style that I’ve honed through years of experimentation and immersion. We’ll revisit my first interview with Dr. Paul Saladino from 2019, when he was first starting to rise and drive the increasing popularity of the carnivore diet movement, plus hear compelling insights from other experts. If you want impactful, eye-opening quotes on diet, protein-centric eating, and the animal-based approach, this episode is a must-listen! TIMESTAMPS: Animal organs, nose to tail, are the most nutrient dense foods in the diet. [00:50] Plants are the backup foods. Plants have defense chemicals that can be toxic depending on your sensitivity. [03:16] Fruit is the least objectionable type of food. The longer you cook something, the more you degrade the nutritional value. [09:26] If you do have a history of digestive distress or an assortment of autoimmune or inflammatory conditions, it is highly likely that you can draw a correlation to the foods that you consume in your diet. [15:03] Try an experiment on yourself if you have any digestive discomfort. Eat just steak, salmon, and eggs for a week or two. See if your diet should change. [16:53] Much information about ancestral nutrition has come from studying the Hadza. [18:55] We have to make a clear distinction between natural nutritious carbs and the nutrient deficient, heavily processed carbs, [21:47] Fasting periods will result in greater nitrogen loss no matter how fat adapted you are. [28:25] Timing of food goes hand-in-hand with timing of being asleep and awake. [30:13] “You simply will not get fat if you eliminate processed foods.” (Dr. Robert Lustig) [32:26] Jay Feldman says: “If we were to evaluate the use of interventions like ketogenic diets, calorie restriction, or intermittent fasting, we would see that they're generally a terrible idea because they're disastrous for energy production.” [37:15] If you are going to take supplements, get the very best, highest quality, highest potency, least objectionable form. [42:37] We humans can have issues like mental health that relate to our diet. [45:53] Be aware of the stress impacts of what you are doing with fasting or cold plunge and such activities. [47:42] If you buy the 2 or 3 dollar chocolate bar, you are no doubt supporting child labor and ripping off the farmers. [51:56] The body has a natural, deep-seated biological drive to survive. And its most prominent dietary need is to consume sufficient protein. Dr. Lustig also examines the impact of hyperinsulinemia, the effects of fructose on liver health, and the role of branched-chain amino acids in metabolism. Beyond diet, he highlights the importance of understanding how insulin, amino acids, and mitochondrial function influence overall metabolic health. The discussion touches on inflammation, the challenges of making healthy choices in grocery stores, and the pros and cons of different diets, including ketogenic and carnivore diets. Welcome to the second of a multi-part series where I cover brief and not-so-brief highlights from many of my favorite podcast guests! Learn about Gretchen Rubin’s 4 Tendencies (Upholder, Questioner, Obliger, and Rebel), hear a major life lesson from my 107-year-old barber, and another one from Seth Godin, who reminds us to “turn that s*it off!” when faced with distraction. You’ll hear from Ray Sidney, Google’s fifth-ever employee, on the importance of pure motivation, why Mark Manson says “self-worth is an illusion”, and that our purpose in life is to “create a string of hope narratives.” I share key advice from John Assaraf on how to rewire your brain for success, as well as important words from Dr. Ron Sinha, who warns us of the dangers of rumination and consumerism—the “hedonic treadmill.” You will also hear from Dr. Robert Lustig, who describes the “hacking of the American Mind” with corporate-driven instant gratification dopamine hits, Dr. Judson Brandeis on sexual health, and learn how to improve your eyesight with Jake Steiner. Finally, William Shewfelt offers a powerful perspective on having a resilient success mindset and Jeff Kahn explains the sleep bank account. TIMESTAMPS: In her book, Gretchen Rubin categorizes four main categories that people fall into with their behavior patterns. They are the upholder, the questioner, the obliger, and the rebel. [00:49] Here's what the research shows. The population, 41% of the population are obligers. 24% are questioners, 19% are upholders, and 17% are rebels. [12:55] The world’s oldest barber, at 107, gave Brad a haircut and inspired Brad’s longevity aspirations. [13:40] Seth Godin talked about persevering especially in athletics. [17:24] You must motivate yourself for the right reasons. [19:50] Mark Manson says that self-worth is an illusion, and it's actually a form of persistent low-level narcissism. You can learn to merge your thinking brain with your feeling brain. [23:11] The brain-training expert, John Assaraf, talked about the obstacles to rewiring our brain. You need to take baby steps. [30:31] If you are on the treadmill of the rat race of trying to achieve more and more, you are sacrificing your health and mental well-being. [33:57] When you ruminate about the past, that generally promotes depression and ruminating about the future, generally promotes anxiety. [37:08] Dr. Brandeis contends that 95% of erectile dysfunction problems are psychological. There is nothing wrong with the plumbing. [40:51] Jake Steiner is an expert on vision is challenging some of the foundational premises of using corrective eyewear. [42:47] William Shewfelt talks about having a plan, locking in that mindset and just never giving up. [44:26] Jeff Kahn, sleep expert suggests that you treat your sleep like a bank account. When you experience a deficit for whatever reason, strive to make that up. [48:48] In the last 40 years, government legislation and subsidies have promoted an ever- available temptation combined with constant stress, with the end result of an unprecedented epidemic of addiction, anxiety, depression, and chronic disease. High insulin levels drive the growth of fat cells. In turn, fat gain can exacerbate insulin resistance, leading to a vicious cycle. Insulin is a hormone the pancreas releases in response to glucose rising in the bloodstream. A lower insulin level is required to lose fat, and dietary habits and lifestyle changes can help. Dr. Robert Lustig and Ben Grynol discuss insulin's dual functions in the body, why high insulin leads to fat storage, and how to lower insulin levels. In this episode of Longevity by Design, host Dr. Gil Blander talks with Dr. Robert Lustig, an emeritus professor of pediatrics at UCSF and a renowned neuroendocrinologist. Dr. Lustig dives into the impact of ultra-processed foods and fructose on metabolism, emphasizing how these contribute to obesity and metabolic diseases. He also discusses his journey from academia to public health advocacy, aiming to reform the food industry and reduce chronic diseases.Episode highlights:Introduction: 00:00The Role of Insulin in Obesity and Metabolism 00:08:00The Influence of Big Food Industries on Public Health Policies 00:29:16The Misconception of Dietary Fats 00:40:0The Impact of Stress on Visceral Fat 00:49:27Key Insights:Ultra-processed foods are detrimental to healthUltra-processed foods, especially those high in fructose, have significant negative impacts on metabolic health. These foods contribute to obesity, fatty liver disease, and other chronic conditions by disrupting normal metabolic processes. They are typically high in sugar, low in fiber, and contain many additives and preservatives that harm the body's ability to regulate weight and insulin levels. The NOVA classification system highlights the degree of food processing, showing that the more processed a food is, the more it is associated with metabolic diseases. Consuming minimally processed foods (NOVA 1) is crucial for maintaining good health, as they are free from the harmful additives found in ultra-processed foods.A calorie is not just a calorieThe concept that all calories are equal is misleading. Different types of calories have varying effects on the body. For example, calories from fructose and other sugars can lead to increased fat storage and metabolic problems, unlike calories from whole foods that contain fiber and other nutrients. The body's response to calories depends on factors like insulin response, satiety signals, and the presence of micronutrients. Studies have shown that ultra-processed foods cause people to consume more calories and gain weight compared to non-processed foods, despite having the same caloric content. Understanding this difference is essential for addressing obesity and metabolic diseases.Fructose is a major contributor to fatty liver diseaseFructose, a type of sugar found in many processed foods and sweetened beverages, is a primary driver of fatty liver disease. Unlike glucose, which is metabolized by every cell in the body, fructose is mainly processed by the liver. Excessive consumption of fructose overwhelms the liver's ability to metabolize it properly, leading to the production of fat within the liver. This process, known as de novo lipogenesis, contributes to the development of non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD), which is increasingly common even among children. Limiting the intake of fructose by avoiding sugary drinks and processed foods is crucial for preventing and managing fatty liver disease.Longevity by Design is produced by InsideTracker, your data-driven wellness guide for optimizing your healthspan. Excess glucose from food gets stored as fat. And our insulin response drives that fat storage. The goal is for the pancreas to release less insulin but for the body to have a healthy response to it. Dr. Robert Lustig and Ben Grynol discuss the interplay between glucose and insulin, healthy glucose numbers, and the problems with insulin resistance. Before someone develops type 2 diabetes, they go through a prediabetic stage. But if someone is reversing their diabetes and is trending toward better glucose levels or even optimal levels, they are postdiabetic. Eric Edmeades and Ben Grynol discuss Edmeades's new book “Postdiabetic,” his company Wildfit, and how the program helps people reverse type 2 diabetes, change their relationship with food, and overhaul their health.
