Wade Eyerly talks about his upbringing and how moving around actually helped him learn how to “start” in any environment. Wade also shares his thoughts on what makes a good parent, and why intention is necessary in relationships. Wade talks about his ethos behind hiring and what makes a good candidate - especially in the start up phase. Wade also shares details behind some of his ventures like Surf Air and Degree Insurance, and talks about how he started out. Highlighted Quote “Figure it Out” When I hire, I don't need the world's greatest accountant, I need an average accountant… anyone who can do the job… that's all I'm looking for from a competency standpoint. So if you come in and you've been an accountant for 10 years, you can do the job. The question is, can you get it done and figure it out? That makes you the person that can fit our team versus not. In startups that's incredibly important and it's not as important in big companies. there's nothing wrong going to Bank of America it is a fine career choice… but in your as you sit in your desk, there is someone over your shoulder, who was in that just 18 months ago, so you can turn around and say “what do I do now?” and they'll have an answer... at a startup, there is no one there. If you have to come to me and say “what do I do now?” I have to stop what I'm doing, pull my eyes off the horizon as the CEO, and figure out what you need to do… and I consider that your job. James also talks about podcasting and content creation as a touch point for business and personal relationships. Highlighted Quote “Friends” If we get somebody on our podcast, they join one of our mastermind groups, and they haven't bought from us, you know, in a year after knowing them, I genuinely do not care… because I have the belief that life and work are better, if you're doing it with friends and people that you genuinely enjoy being around. Greg shares his thoughts on the compatibility of pursuing a career and parenting, gratitude, and how to get better at writing. Highlighted Quote “Gratitude” I feel that if gratitude was more prevalent in our society we would shave off 80% of the problems that we have, just by exercising gratitude. “Golden Years” They always talk about your golden years as after your kids are at the house… I think that golden years are the years that you're with your kids that your kids are growing up. Perry talks about the 80/20 principle, unplugging from social media, and creating space and time to “explore”. Perry also shares his thoughts on what makes a productive day… and life. Highlighted Quote “Explore” I think one of the most important things that you ever have, not just early in your career, but during your career is space and time to explore… and the margin to not have some crushing pressure, where you always have to deliver, deliver, deliver and pay the piper. That is really important. Jonathan Beninson shares his background and beginnings in entrepreneurship along with thoughts about imposter syndrome, “enoughness”, and what it truly takes to “win”. Jonathan also talks about his belief that “human problems have human solutions” and shares how his desire to help solve some of those problems brought him to his latest project: Arkhaven - a company dedicated to creating self sustaining housing that provides energy, food and water to residents. Highlighted Quote “Imposter Syndrome” We all have something about ourselves that is always with us but that we don't like to look at. Maybe something that drives us, something that we feel embarrassed by... for a lot of people it's a sense of imposter syndrome. I can tell you the number of people in my life who are people you've heard of probably, who are CEOs who are otherwise thought leaders, influencers, etc. I can tell you that, by and large, many of them, most of them even have the sense of imposter syndrome. My advice to anyone who cares, is make friends with that, whatever it is, because it's going to be with you and it's in there's nothing you're going to do to get rid of it. It's your passenger and it's probably the fuel in your tank and and when everything is said and done, chances are, wherever you succeed in your life It's probably because of that thing...it's probably your strongest investment. Dallas Jenkins shares how his desire to be a filmmaker was sparked early on in life, along with a mission to help inspire and instill passion in others. Dallas shares how he ventured into “Hollywood” with his first feature film Hometown Legend. Since then Dallas has used every opportunity to learn, study his craft and dedicate his work to creating true impact both on and off screen. Now a Writer and Director of “The Chosen” Dallas's goal is to “provide loaves and fishes” and allow God to multiply them. This episode is a great look at faith, trust and goals. Highlighted Quote “Impact” There's a scene in “One Flew Over The Cuckoo's Nest”, where Jack Nicholson is denied the ability to watch the World Series in the mental hospital that he is in. So he stands in front of the TV and starts doing a fake play by play of the World Series to just pretend like he's watching and it gets all the other guys excited and, and all these patients are standing around the television and cheering and going crazy. That scene changed my life! I was like “whatever that is... I want to do that.” I want to arouse in audiences the kind of emotion that that scene did for me. It was just such a big moment cinematically but also just for me personally… that impact! I wanted to do that for others. That's when I started to want to become a filmmaker. In this episode we talk with Carrie Lloyd. Carrie talks about kindness, belief, connection and self worth. Carrie also shares the 1# thing that can be done to impact the number of homeless and incarcerated youths - fixing the foster care system. Highlighted Quote “Downstream Effects” One of the major statistics that keeps showing up again and again both in Homelessness, Incarceration and Trafficking, is that for example in Los Angeles 80% of trafficked victims actually were in foster care. 75% of those incarcerated in America were in the foster care system at some point. 50% of homelessness, were in foster care at some point... Forgive me for speaking for the rest of the team but the reason why we are all so passionate about this as if we catch up the problems upstream, (reforming the foster care system in the United States of America, as well being able to navigate reunifying children back to their homes, or finding them a forever family a safe and loving family if they can't go back to their families) then we will actually catch up all of those things upstream and reduce significantly those numbers Resources/Mentions: Carrie Lloyd - Website The Noble Renaissance (Book) Orphan Myth Campaign America's Kids Belong Guest Links Carrie Lloyd - Website Carrie - Facebook Carrie - Twitter Carrie On Podcast Podcast Links: Instagram: @Hopestrategy Facebook: @hopestrategy Twitter: @thehopestrategy Youtube The Hope Strategy

Highlighted Quote “Orphans” I was at a Mexican orphanage, and after being there for some time, I finally asked the executive director “how did all these kids' parents die?” and he said, “They're not dead.” He said, “They are kids who've been abused, neglected and abandoned… some of the parents are in prison or in prostitution and in almost every case bad addiction is involved. And my wife said, “Oh my gosh, these are the same kids here in the States, but we just call them something different." Elin Kelsey shares her expertise and unique perspective on tackling human challenges with hope and optimism. Elin shares how to frame large problems and create personal, hope driven interactions with environmental problems and how to seek out current solutions and update longstanding narratives and inaccuracies. Highlighted Quote “Scale” When we try to handle these things on an individual basis and they're issues that are actually happening at a national scale or global scale, the scale is skewed so one of the things we do see happening is the emergence of a lot of mental and emotional well being issues... we see this rise of of terms like “compassion fatigue” or “eco anxiety” being now recognized by the American Psychological Association & the Canadian Psychological Association... These are real issues that people face when they have a sense of despair about the state of the planet and about their own well being. What becomes really important is being able to see what's happening at the appropriate scale, so that you can lessen that pressure on yourself instead of feeling like it's all sitting on your shoulders. Highlighted Quote “Hope and Fear” I've always believed that… especially when you love something or somebody so much you have to experience fear, unless you have a lot of faith. If you love your kids you don't want them to get hurt, or if you love your wife, you don't want her to get hurt or you don't want her to leave, You don't want her to die… you love so much that you're afraid. Along with his thoughts on keeping ego and self worth leveled, Tristen shares how being quick to start and slow to quit has proven valuable in the pursuit of personal and business success. This episode is a refreshing and enjoyable look at real life entrepreneurship. Don't miss it! Highlighted Quote “Just Start” Just start! go for it... Make a list of what you want to do and then break that down into every tiny detail and take that first step, even if it's googling how to sell something online. Just start and go, because you'll run into dead ends, and you'll go back and you'll figure it out. But if you don't start creating that momentum you won't get there. Dr. Ben Corn talks about one of the defining moments in his early life - the death of his father due to cancer. Ben shares how his understanding of the role of a physician changed from being just a care provider to being a “hope provider” helping patients to create and sustain hope even in terminal situations. Ben also talks about his life changing move to Israel and the personal growth that came out of the uncertainty of the experience. Ben shares his thoughts and findings on the mechanics of hope and happiness, and the fine line between hope and fear as it relates to personal agency. Highlighted Quote “The Role of The Physician” I truly had an epiphany… I realized that I thought I went to medical school, to cure cancer (prostate cancer.) But I realized that nothing had changed since that phone call. And that, my mission was a completely different one. I wanted to be a cancer physician and be up on the latest treatments and know how to treat patients with that dimension of knowing how to communicate. Wil shares how creating a company culture of volunteer work has helped him and his team “check the right boxes” - choosing impact and purpose driven growth over chasing profits. This episode is a raw and real masterclass in business leadership and personal development. Highlighted Quote “Love to Lose” I like to win... I like beating people at stuff and I like getting beat, like I like the feeling of getting beat at something, because there's no excuses… if they scored more points than you… go home and learn. “Check The Right Boxes” The amount of joy that I get off of watching people grow is off the charts. I get so much joy off of watching people come to this company and grow. I throw a lot of money into resources that other people wouldn't to help people to grow. You can't change where you get joy from… a lot of people get joy out of watching the number get bigger. They get joy out of that business class flight, that first class flight, they get joy taking those pictures on Instagram and showing people that sh**, they get joy out of those inc 5000 lists. Minister Onlilove Chika Alston talks about her experiences being in the foster care system as a young girl, how she found her faith, and how instituting a “sabbath” saved her life. Onleilove shares her love of service and how being reunited with her tribe in Africa, after slavery separated her family generations ago, restored her dignity as an African American. Onleilove also shares some of the new genetic findings which support the claims of jewish ancestry from some African tribes people - painting a new picture of biblical diversity. This episode is a fresh and inspiring look at faith, love and what it means to be part of the shared human experience. Highlighted Quote “Rest is Radical” If you were a newly freed slave person and you had no control over your work schedule, and now you're being told that the creator of the universe is giving you a day that you had to rest. This would be such a gift. My family... were held here as slaves, I have ancestors who could not rest. My grandmother, who took me out of foster care as a young woman, picked cotton as a sharecropper. So for me when I rest, I'm stopping but I'm also making a radical stance that says my body as a black woman is important and it deserves rest, and I'm not only what I can produce, I'm who I am. I have inherent worth, even if I'm not producing. I understand that in this world, there are people who cannot do “Sabbath” whether they're essential workers during COVID, or whether they're people who are undocumented that have to come to work whenever their boss tells them to. We're not yet at a place where every single human being can have a day of rest but I hope and pray for the day where we can. Resources/Mentions: People E. Through hard work in the plantation fields, fighting fires and even work in government Guy's family helped pave a culture of hard work and “grit” that has been the secret to his success. When you fail you ruin peoples' lives, you waste money, you waste time, you waste many things… So don't get a cavalier attitude about failure. Dr. Laura Craig-Bray talks about the use and benefits of EFT (Emotion Focused Therapy) - a tool for strengthening relationships through the awareness of emotions and their ties to identity and behavior. Dr. Laura explains what EFT is and details the two “types” of people in relationships: The Pursuer - and - The Withdrawer. This episode is a great look at how therapy can be used to strengthen relationships even when there is no apparent “need” or “problems”. Highlighted Quotes “Assumptions” We live our lives with unquestioned beliefs about relationships, the world, and ourselves that impact our relationships with other people. “Blame” What I love about EFT is that we don't focus on blame or who is “wrong”. Rather, because of our history we often carry into our relationships barriers to intimacy… and by trying to understand those, understand yourself, and make yourself predictable to your partner and to yourself… then you can feel safe. “Trauma” We talk about Trauma with a capital “T”… but there is also trauma with a little “t” … and what many people experience growing up is that there is no one there to help them learn about their emotional world… in some ways that is a form of neglect because there was no one there to help you understand your emotions and tell you that emotions are ok… that's a small “t” trauma that we see an awful lot of. Audrey shares how treatment for depression has stayed the same for the last 35 years - something that urgently needs to change - and shares her hope for the future of treatments and social acceptance of individuals with mental health challenges. Highlighted Quotes “Advancement” It is shocking that we have a new cell phone every few months and that we have been to the moon. Yet 35% of people do not respond to the existing medications for depression, and the SSRI / Prozac type of medications we currently have are over 35 years old. “The Problem” One third of Americans are struggling with depression and anxiety. Bisila Bokoko talks about growing up in Spain, her fathers influence on her cultural self education, her lifelong desire to live and work in New York, and the life changing experience she had traveling to Africa at 35. Bisila shares her thoughts on culture, diversity, happiness, philanthropy, and gratitude. This episode is full of an optimism and positivity that is absolutely contagious - get ready to smile. Highlighted Quotes “Happiness” Happiness is something that is really found within. I work a lot with young adults and children and I've seen them play with just two stones for hours and be completely content… they may live in “poverty” but in reality they are really rich - rich in happiness, and rich in generosity. “Orchestra” It's important to understand what you do well and also what you are not so good at… I don't try to play the whole orchestra - because I cannot play all of the instruments. So instead I know which ones I'm good at and the others… I find support. “The Gift” Most of the things that make us different are actually a gift “Diversity” You really need to build teams that are diverse in all senses otherwise there will always be something that is not going to work as it should. Kerry McDonald shares her optimistic view of education and education innovation along with her insights about the remote learning situation many parents currently face during the pandemic. Kerry defines “Unschooling” - the idea taught in her book “Unschooled: Raising Curious, Well-Educated Children Outside the Conventional Classroom” and gives evidence based advice and hope to parents seeking a better way to educate their children. This episode is a great reflection on what education really is and how it should be approached. Highlighted Quotes “Opportunity in Education Entrepreneurship” We're seeing tremendous growth in all aspects of the economy in terms of entrepreneurship, of course that's not offsetting the vast number of businesses that have been shut down due to government orders, but it is a hopeful sign that entrepreneurship is alive and well and I think, again, education entrepreneurship is ripe for more opportunities and more innovators to create some really wonderful options for families. “Defining Unschooling” “Unschooling” is really disentangling education from schooling and seeing schooling as one method to being educated sort of top down, course of type learning where you know here are your daily assignments here are your tests and quizzes here's your ABCDEF grade, and yet learning is so much broader and again more enriching than that experience. Also unschooling doesn't mean that you're not taking classes, it doesn't mean that you're not doing what we would consider school like activities. It just means that it's a less coercive experience and it's more driven by the child's interest. “Parents” Parents are the ones, ultimately responsible for making sure their children are highly literate and numerous highly educated, and I argue that that's true whether your children are homeschooled or in a conventional school that it's up to the parents to make sure your children are getting a high quality education that it's your responsibility as a parent to do that. Highlighted Quotes: “Do it for YOU” Something I say to my kids is - “I don't care what your friends want to do or if you're surrounded by people that work at Facebook and Twitter… Is that what YOU want to do? that's cool if you do, but if I were you, I'd figure out what I want to do every single day that I can actually make money doing?" “Impossible” Doing the impossible and enjoying what you're doing is is like I think the most important thing you can do as a parent Resources/Mentions: Amazon CNN Time Magazine AOL Wired Article - Talks about 2market product Hint Water Guest Links: Kara Twitter Kara Linkedin Kara Website Book Hint Water Podcast Podcast Links: Instagram: @Hopestrategy Facebook: @hopestrategy Twitter: @thehopestrategy Youtube The Hope Strategy

Jess talks about the motivations behind starting such a project and shares a powerful message about the problem of child trafficking and what is being done to combat it. This episode is packed with powerful success stories about rescued victims and action points for self-education about the problem. Highlighted Quotes “Responsibilities” If we're going to be responsible adults and parents and create the kind of society where it's safe for children... It does seem very irresponsible to have so little work done. We've got incredible teams and many law enforcement agencies called ICAC (internet crimes against children) who do really great work and are drastically underfunded. If we would take this as serious as we take domestic terrorism we could make a much safer society for children to grow up in. “Google” If you really want to get an idea of how big the issue [of human trafficking] is… jump on google and try searching human trafficking and then your city name... and then search child trafficking and your city name. Neil shares a powerful hopeful message: how artificial intelligence - something typically portrayed as apocalyptic - can be used by everyone to create meaningful change in the world. Neil's message is underpinned by the idea that “you can be the driver” in your AI experience. Neil also shares how his parents influenced his view of risk and reward, his hope for education, and his advice for securing “the job of tomorrow”. This is not an episode you want to miss! Highlighted Quotes “Motivation for the Book” The reason I wrote my book was to do these 3 things: Empower, Educate, and Enable. I think too many people feel like they are a passenger on this journey with AI… but the truth is AI doesn't work that way, you don't have to be a passenger you can be the driver. “Tools” Everyone can do something with AI, it could be for your business or your community… don't give in to the fear, at the end of the day it's a tool. “Create” “If you are worried about AI or if you are trying to figure out how you can be hopeful about it… think about using it to create something. Chad Ford Discusses what creates good conflict resolution and why it is sometimes so hard to achieve. Chad shares his experience growing up with a father traumatized by war, his desire to bridge conflicts to create healing, and the path he took to become a world class mediator working in countries like South Africa and Northern Ireland to create peace. Chad talks about the concept of “Dangerous Love” (also the title for his new book) and gives advice for anyone dealing with conflict. Highlighted Quotes “Dangerous Love” Why is it called dangerous love? Because it requires vulnerability, it requires us to do something that is scary… it requires us to do something that might not be reciprocated by the other person… but it is the thing that will change the dynamic in a relationship in such a way that offers hope. “Am I right?” Of course in conflict we are going to feel that we are right… people often say to me “but what if i am right?” and my response to that is there is a way to be right about the facts and wrong about the relationship... and which is more important? “Mind Readers” When we are in conflict we become mind readers… it's amazing! If somebody said something we “know” their intentions, we “know” why they said it, we know EVERYTHING! Even though they haven't said anything… we need the humility to ask “Do I know, really? This week's interview is with our own co-host Josh Steimle. Josh dives deep into the rebel mindset responsible for his pursuit of learning, change, and challenge. Josh shares how his parents instilled a passion for reading and science fiction, why skating has taught him more about entrepreneurship than anything else, and how he turned down a lucrative offer for his own sanity. This episode will ring true with anyone stuck chasing a career for “money” who wants instead to chase passion, progression and learning. Highlighted Quotes “Permission” I feel like so many good things have come into my life because I was willing to take a risk or I was willing to do something that was scary, but I felt like it was the right thing.” “Advice” Most entrepreneurs understand that nobody understands their business the way that they understand it and it's hard to find advice from anybody else. You kind of just have to figure it out and do your own thing. And that's the same way that skateboarding works... people can give you advice and they can give you tips, but if it's not another skater, or it's not another entrepreneur in the entrepreneurial world. There's just no way to really explain it to them so they understand it and there's no way that they can really get what you're going through in order to be able to give you helpful useful advice “Rebel” The rebel attitude that accompanied the skateboard culture also I feel served me as an entrepreneur... when you're an entrepreneur you're doing things that normal people don't do, because if normal people did it there wouldn't be any opportunity. The definition of an entrepreneur is somebody who seeks out opportunities or reallocates resources from a place of lower opportunity to a place of higher opportunity, which is a fancy way of just saying that entrepreneurs say “Hey, I can do this” “I can make money here” or “I can change the world here”... by doing something. Shyamala shares her thoughts on arranged marriage and traditional schooling in India along with cutting edge insights into the world of A.I and voice recognition. That's how I define miracles. Eric Bandholz talks about Beardbrand, presenting on Shark Tank, politics, and how he changed up his hiring to create a more independent and creative work environment. Eric also shares some of his thoughts on stoicism along with some of the struggles both he and his wife have faced in pursuit of building a family. This episode is a great look at creating positive work culture and building a life you can be proud to live. Highlighted Quotes “Stoic Mindset” I tend to have a Buddhist-Stoic mindset for a lot of things... there is going to be suffering it's just part of humanity and it is part of life.one of the things that I have seen is that you are dealt the problems that you are capable of solving them. If you aren't capable of solving them, you wouldn't have them. That has encouraged me to find bigger problems because I feel that I can certainly solve bigger problems that I'm currently facing right now. You should want to have those problems and those challenges in life. “Core Values” We look at our core values as a triangle of Freedom, Honor and Trust. what happens is if you have too much freedom… then what happens is your trust and your hunger go down. So it's something that you want to have balanced... again perhaps too much hunger or too much drive and you end up working 80 hours a week and you are losing your freedom, and maybe you are eroding trust as well as you walk over your teammates so like balance has been a big thing for us. Tyler Farnsworth shares his thoughts on the common pitfalls of influencer marketing and how to avoid them. Tyler also shares his love of “building” and creating along with an idea he calls R.O.R - the return of investment in relationships. This episode is a fresh look at the world of advertising and marketing with a distinctly human touch. Highlighted Quotes “Build Your Future” It clicked for me that there is an opportunity to get good at a craft to get out to the serve to do things. I think it helped instill the understanding that I can build my future - it's not going to be just given to me… my life isn't just going to happen I can create it. “Influencers” We found that people have a desire to learn from other people, much more than they have a desire to learn from a brand. We are humans, we like connecting with people, and at its core, that's what influencer marketing is: people telling great stories. “Art” The people who have made a difference in this world are consistently the people who have kicked against the norms who have done things differently, who have stood up, who are unafraid to do something different. Even with the ridicule that might occur, they were willing to do it anyway. I think that's the message that we need to continue to showcase in the world today… pick yourself up, you can create, you are an artist, you can create something that's worthwhile. John talks about his intentional candor with family and friends and how his positive views on faith and hope help him live his best life. Armed with the belief that “You can do anything you can do” John has proven that it is possible to take on a wide variety of projects and be successful in any arena. Highlighted Quotes “Humans are Good” What always has given me hope is I genuinely believe humans are good, I just have seen too much. I've lived in too many places. I've met too many people to think otherwise. Does evil exist? Of course it does. And of course there are bad apples, of course, there's such a small percentage, and that small percentage still have redemption and hope. I don't think that the way positive energy works is the positive just turns negative, I think positive begets positive, and the more positive messages we can put out there, the better. As people sit back and they say, “the world is falling apart and everything is terrible.” be careful what you're ingesting and what you're putting into your brain in your body. “Bigger” Bigger, stronger, faster does not mean better. You need to be big enough, strong enough fast enough. but as soon as you're in that class of “hey I can compete” then the difference is, do you think calm under pressure, do you freak out, like what happens to you when the lights are on, and you gotta do what you need to do. Do you do your job as Belickic would say. “The Process” A lot of people want to do something, and get something in return right away. Jason Earl professor at BYUH and Entrepreneur shares his vision for the future of education along with his thoughts on success and happiness. Jason shares how his upbringing created the desire to do well in school and taught him the value of working hard and smart, the value of opportunities, the lessons learned building a successful business and optimizing your own weaknesses through the right team. This episode is a great look at what it means to be successful, the real value of traditional education and what needs to happen in order to future proof the education process. Highlighted Quotes “Bad Zoom Classes” The shroud is off and people can finally peer into higher education, and for the first time in the world people could see what a bad zoom class looks like… it's not pretty. I think what's really happened is we've jumped into the future about 10 to 15 years. I'm convinced there are some educators out there that can do it, and they can teach it and I think this is a huge opportunity for them because this is a chance for a lot of well meaning people to find a platform and put their own foot back in education and really help. “Skills” There's so many skills now that can be gained just with a decent internet connection and with a tablet or a laptop. You can learn skills in project management, and digital marketing or whatever... There's a lot of things that students need besides just passing some class… they need that confidence, they need a network and they need the brand. “Intangible value” If you can learn to value the things in life that you can't put a dollar amount on and then devote your life to those things. I think that's where you find your greatest reward and even to this day I look at you know some of my best students and I'm so proud of them. But I also look at my students who are simply, you know back in the Philippines and working with their families and they're running a small business, they're happy. they can provide for their families. They feel like they are part of something bigger than just themselves. And they're creating jobs in their own little way and they're changing the world so I think, I think those are the two examples. Jon shares the events leading up to the evacuation from Paradise including how his own home was consumed in the raging fires. Jon explains the aftermath of the fire and the significant death toll along with his view of hope and growth even in adverse circumstances. This episode is a great reminder to accept help when needed, follow your heart and show kindness in all circumstances. Highlighted Quotes “Help whenever you can” I think all of us should help whenever we can. There is always something tragic and I think it takes everybody doing a little piece to make this world go round. “The House is Gone” Nobody really knew anything. I knew our fence was on fire… so I assumed it was gone, but I didn't know. The fire happened on a Thursday and then on Friday a good buddy who works for the utility company was able to go out because he had to work to do… but he was able to go by our house and he sent me a picture, I think Friday afternoon was when i finally had a picture of our house… it was gone. “$20,000” I was surprised at how much money came so quickly. In about a week there was $20,000 ... and you could see who donated it... there were people that we didn't even know from around the world. In a break from our usual format, co-host Corey Blake takes his position as guest and shares some of his insights on Hope and how to “get in over your head”. Corey shares some of the key experiences that shaped his world view and helped create his love of opportunity and abundance thinking. Corey also explains how “positive thinking” and “understanding the worst case scenario” are not contradictory ideas. This episode is well worth a listen. Highlighted Quotes “Get In Over Your Head” I've said on this podcast a few times this idea I've had of “just getting in over your head”... Jumping in and seeing what happens... If there's opportunity, take advantage of it. The pattern I have seen is those opportunities build on each other, and they and they begin to compound and eventually good things continue to happen. “Worst Case Scenario” I also look at the worst case scenario a lot which sounds maybe pessimistic, but a lot of times I'll look at a situation that my previous self (the first 20 years of my life) would have said, “Here's all the negatives and that's why we're in trouble” or “that's why this isn't gonna work out.” But now I say, let me just jump straight to the worst possible thing that could happen, and then let me be okay with that… Looking at it from that perspective but doing it through a lens of hope and saying, “well, let's let's put our best foot forward and give it an honest effort so that that doesn't happen” but I know what it would look like if it did, and that's okay... that gives you a level of confidence moving forward. “Hope IS a strategy” You can't sit around or rest on your laurels and hope one day you are successful, or hope you are a good dad and wait for that hope to amount to something, Hope by itself is not a strategy… If you start any strategy with hope in mind and with optimism and ambition...then good things will happen. Daniel Robinson was featured on The Berrics as a inspiring prison reform story and a man who loves to skate. Daniel shares the story of his incarceration as a teenager and the events leading up to it. He talks about what kept him hopeful during a 14 year prison sentence and the mindset and approach he has taken to rebuild a meaningful life for himself, including a dog rehabilitation business and documenting his return to skating on YouTube. This episode is a slight departure from our normal fare but holds some amazing pearls of wisdom and moments of magnetizing candor that is bound to leave you hopeful and ready to face the day. Highlighted Quotes “A Blank Slate” Now that I have a clear head and a blank slate that I can write whatever I want on... I can fill my mind with whatever information I want to fill it with and I decided I don't want that to be prison war stories or reminiscing about using drugs and partying. I want it to be all of the things that I'm interested in...things that are practical, things that are educational, things that are uplifting...whatever is right... Now I get to decide what I put in my brain. “The Past” I can't help but think about the ways that my life should have been could have been better when I was younger, but it's irrelevant at this point. Am I gonna let that dominate my thought process now? or am I just going to do what I need to do to take care of myself and my loved ones? Because dwelling on how things could have been is just living in the past. “Prison” It was almost unfathomable for me to think that I could be doing life in prison for something I did when I was a kid. I spent a good set of almost two years fighting my case, that's two years of not knowing whether or not I was going to do life in prison... it's the hardest pill you're gonna ever have to swallow. Emma Jade shares her journey from college graduation and making the most of grueling internships to becoming a news correspondent, writer and producer and pursuing life as a news anchor. After years of successful broadcast television Emma decided to chase another life: one of a mother. Emma's passion for news and motherhood ultimately led her to create MOMCAST, an internet news show focused on simplifying the news experience for busy moms. This episode is a case study in dedication, hard work and making the most of every opportunity. Highlighted Quotes “The Internship” I smiled my way through that internship every single day, while other interns didn't take it as seriously I just knew that this is the job I have to do. So I did for two and a half weeks, and that attitude that I had smiling and showing up and being on time and even though I wasn't stoked on the job I was doing I was still there, that internship turned into a job with NBC Sports where later I got to go to four Olympic games with them, and I won two national sports Emmys with them… just having a good attitude led to something that that moment I never thought possible. “Momcast” People are dying to not have opinions, but just the basic facts of what's happening… because all the extra noise is maddening and it's not helping anyone. It's literally why I created Momcast, because I just kept talking to moms like me, who didn't have time to sit down and watch the entire newscast because half of it was either someone's opinion or stuff that they weren't interested in. And so I thought “how can I make this better for people?” because moms especially right now need to know what's going on, and they need to know what's important and they need to be able to make decisions for their kids and for their families. And there just wasn't a safe place for them to go. “Sources” The best advice that I can offer is... know your source. Right now, sources are the most important thing when it comes to news and who you're going to trust, because if you know the source of the information, and where it's truly coming from, and the reason behind it, then it's easier to trust, and it makes more sense for you to invest your own thoughts your own ideas into whatever the point of that story is... but if you're investing in just people that you like on Instagram or people that you hear on social media then I think you run into a little bit more trouble and a little bit more confusion. Elvin J. Austria Laceda - Growing Opportunities Elvin Laceda shares his inspiring story of Hope, Innovation and Love - arriving from the Philippines with only $1.60 in his pocket and taxes to pay Elvin decided to use his struggle as inspiration. During his time at BYU-Hawaii he built a network of farm schools that have helped thousands of farmers more than triple their income and improve quality of life. Elvin has made it his mission to create and take every opportunity to improve the lives of those in need. This episode is an amazing look into the work done by Elvin and RiceUp to change the face of farming and bring thousands of people out of poverty and on their way to self sufficiency. Highlighted Quotes “Opportunities” I know I have some regrets of missed opportunities, but I am really grateful that when the opportunity came I grabbed it. I always believe that great opportunity only comes, maybe not twice but only once, that's why I always do my best to grab them whenever they are offered. “Agri-preneurship” The farm school serves as an educational area. We created our own curriculum. It's called “Agri-preneurship”. We help farmers understand business concepts and how to become successful “Agri-preneurs”. In the curriculum they learn how to become a good financial manager. They set S.M.A.R.T goals. They know how to use financial statements, they create good habits that change their lifestyle, habits that generate money and save money. “In Memory of My Grandfather” In the Philippines around 34% of agricultural workers are in extreme poverty. So I told myself, ‘I have to do something here in the memory of my grandfather.' We started the nitty gritty work of working with these farmers in one village and then after that we worked in another village, from 17 farmers we now have 400 farmers in Pampanga, we replicated this in several other provinces. Elder Jeffrey R. Elder Holland describes Hope, shares how it differs from its counterpart faith, details his journey through education at Yale University, and shares how his true hope in life comes through Christ. This episode is a unique look into the idea of Hope in its religious context and also offers insight into the life of a person whose mission it is to spread Hope world over. Highlighted Quotes “Follow Your Heart” I just believe in what your heart tells you... People in your audience who aren't particularly religious would have the feeling that “This is what I ought to do.”... so follow your heart guys, trust your feelings. “The Shared Experience of Love” James Thurber gave the best definition of love that I've ever heard - he said “love is what you go through together.” So, don't wait until you're out of school and got a car and got a job and got a condominium… part of my love for Pat has been that she's gone through all of this with me with we've done all that together. That's how we got married, we didn't have any money then... I mean if you thought it through rationally… if it was about money we'd still never be married 58 years later. “Faith and Hope” But for you and for me and our families and our friends, Hope and Faith blend together and Both of them are elements that keep us going. They keep us getting up in the morning, they keep us with a smile on our face and seeing the brightness of the future... we are then not overcome by circumstances; we don't get overly worried about a COVID crisis... we ARE attentive and we're mindful of the trouble and the challenge but we don't see it as the end of the world and we don't see it as something that's going to mar life forever. Peter Kozodoy shares insights from his new book “Honest to Greatness” about the transformative value of Honesty. He also shares techniques to help you use honesty to break barriers, motivate and improve performance, and build relationships of trust and respect. This episode is gold! If you enjoy this episode you will love reading Peter's book “Honest to Greatness”. Highlighted Quotes “Investing” I have a Warren Buffett approach to investing and I don't just mean financially... I mean, investing in myself as a human. If I can spend a little bit of time and money now to have an asset that will serve me for the rest of my life. I'll take that bet all day long. I'm now never not going to have an MBA from an Ivy League school? I'm now never not going to be an author... is this stuff painful? Yes. Is it expensive? You would not believe how expensive it is but I think of it in terms of the long-term benefit versus the short term cost? And by the way thinking long-term is a big part of how I define honesty in order to achieve outcomes. If you're going to be honest about what it takes you've got to think long-term. “Honesty is Universal” If Honesty is the best policy then it must work universally... and guess what, it does. You can use it as a frontline employee, a middle manager, or an 11 year old girl scout. You just have to understand the nuances of how to use it because it's very different in practice if you're the CEO of a big company or a Frontline employee with no formal Authority. It is different if you're at those different places, but it does work. You just have to be Strategic and not just blurt it out... It is strategic honesty. “Ego” There are two things that happen with ego. One, the bigger our ego, the bigger our blind spot. This means the bigger the number of things that we don't know or are willing to admit about ourselves... things other people already know... and that can be so dangerous because it erodes trust. The second thing that happens is that you close yourself off to understanding what is true and you incur opportunity costs... because the further we are from the truth the further we are from capitalizing on what the facts can give us. There are two questions that I'm on a mission to have everyone adopt to help repress that ego that reptilian, responsive, emotional brain we have that can be so damaging to ourselves and our relationships and to society. The two questions are these: “Is that true?” and “How do I know?” Resources/Mentions: Books Radical Candor: Be a Kick-Ass Boss Without Losing Your Humanity So You've Been Publicly Shamed Videos Peter's TEDx Speech Guest Links: Peterkozodoy.com Peter Kozodoy Linkedin Peter Kozodoy Instagram Podcast Links: Instagram: @Hopestrategy Facebook: @hopestrategy Twitter: @thehopestrategy Youtube The Hope Strategy
Colby & Kenzie Bauer - Building Together In this Episode Colby and Kenzie Bauer share their unique story. They talk about their experience founding a business while dating, growing a product line and using customer feedback, keeping a family prioritized when they work full time on their business Thread Wallets. This episode dives into what creates successful relationships, how to pivot on ideas, why bringing value should be your “go-to” and how to keep perspective in challenging situations. Highlighted Quotes “Gratitude” Gratitude is the only way we actually get through. The way I put it is there is more good happening in our lives than bad, especially if you're focusing and feeding the good. If you don't have gratitude then those trials can put you on a whole different path. Whereas, with gratitude, they just propel you or they at least get you to give you the strength to keep moving in the right direction. “Small Goals” I Remember going home to our little apartment we would get one or two orders randomly a day from people. And I remember just sitting down and saying “okay we don't really know what we're going to do with our lives, but we got 50 orders at the last farmers market and we're getting one or two orders a day like what if we could just find a way to get 10 orders a day. If we could just sell 10 wallets a day online. That would make us 50-60,000 a year, and that would be enough for us to be okay” … it was just totally validating, to think we could do that, to think we could reach 10 wallets a day. “Finding Balance” It can be really easy to just focus on business all the time, which we did early on in our marriage and I don't think our marriage suffered at all but we had to really keep ourselves in check and ask ourselves “are we talking too much business and not enough personal life?”, but ultimately I think the balance has come. Finally, we can kind of compartmentalize each aspect of our life from work at an office and not in our home to spending time with family, to going on dates, and then church on weekends. Fortunately we found some balance. It's a tricky one and at times, you have to live with a little bit of imbalance, and it's okay... it's okay to put certain things as a priority or have them weigh more on your life at different times. Gabe Reid & Lessons From The NFL Gabe Reid, a former NFL player discusses the start of his career training and playing college football, his transition into the NFL, struggles with injuries, his entrepreneurial parents and the role that they played in his own endeavors, and his hope for growth and opportunity in his home of American Samoa. Gabe's story is underpinned by the belief that “every experience teaches a lesson”. This episode inspires both patience and grit in the face of opposition and difficulty. Highlighted Quotes “Jumping The Fence” “When everyone would leave, and they would close the practice field, I would jump the fence and go and start hitting the bags and start catching, and I would drive the sledge because I wanted to get better. And that coupled with just trying to be the best person that you can be, and having a good work ethic... that's where I credit my success from.” “Lessons From Football” There were certain experiences that I needed to learn through football, that were going to help set me up for the rest of my life... And I had a mindset of “look, it's okay, you're good enough to make it, and to reach your goals and to, to be successful.” That's where I found peace knowing that I have to go through football to learn that lesson. “Entrepreneurship Instills Hope” “Maybe that's what my draw is to go back home… to tell them ‘hey look I made in the NFL I do but there's more things that you can do' and I've chosen, or feel prompted to use entrepreneurship as the vehicle to instill hope, and to inspire and to hopefully change one life.” Resources/Mentions: Bears Vs. Lo and Tanner Beeston share their insights as content creators and new parents on the Journey from their individual jobs to making a living full time as Influencers. They share their story of meeting during high school, Lo's start in Videography, their decision to move to Hawaii and the challenges they have faced to create both the life they want and their desire to be authentic as influencers. This episode is a focus on being genuine, positive and hard working even when others tell you to “stop trying” or “you won't make it”. Highlighted Quotes “Authenticity” “In the beginning I was so worried about “what are they going to think?” I would just try and hide little things... Until I started showing who I was and posting what I felt like I wanted to post and sharing what I wanted to share and forgetting about what other people thought... that's when I started seeing success.” “Being yourself” “A few months ago we really had to sit down and just say… What is our main priority? Are we just trying to play catch up with the other thousand influencers that we look up to? Or are we actually doing what we love to do... and if they didn't exist would we still do what we're doing?.” “Choose your circle” Nobody around me in Utah was anywhere near doing anything with Instagram… it was looked down upon, I almost felt like dumb if I let it shine. It was such a breath of fresh air coming out to Hawaii and not being made fun of when I went to take a picture for Instagram. I remember telling Tanner ‘it's so cool that I can take a picture and not feel like somebody is judging me…' all I wanted to do was document our lives and make really cool videos and take these really cool pictures, and it was really cool to see that my friends were doing the same thing and was encouraging it instead of making me feel like it was dumb.
