Are you curious about human behavior and what really drives our decisions? In this episode, Adam Hill interviews bestselling author and expert on marketing and evolutionary psychology Tim Ash, who discusses key concepts from his book "Unleash Your Primal Brain." Tim explains how irrational we truly are as human beings and how our emotions, not rational thought, drive most of our decisions. He delves into topics like sleep, decision-making, negativity bias, and tribal psychology. They discuss Ash's background growing up in the Soviet Union and immigrating to the United States, as well as his career path from digital marketing to studying human behavior through an evolutionary lens. Here are some power takeaways from today's conversation: Tim's career background Curiosity as an antidote to fear About “Unleash Your Primal Brain” Using evolutionary psychology to build positive tribes The role of emotions in decision-making The psychology of negative thinking and its impact on decision-making Evolutionary psychology and its applications in marketing and personal growth Episode Highlights: [14:11] Curiosity as an Antidote to Fear Tim recently had the pleasure of being a guest on Dov Baron's podcast, "Curiosity Bites." Dov shared his insight that curiosity serves as the foundation for all other values. Without it, one's life can become stagnant and devoid of purpose. Curiosity propels us to actively seek growth, learning, and personal development, encouraging us to push past our fears and limitations to expand the boundaries of what we once believed possible. In fact, curiosity serves as an antidote for fear, presenting an alternative approach to dealing with it. Rather than simply pushing through or denying our fear, embracing curiosity allows us to focus on something that outweighs our fear, providing us with a powerful tool to navigate challenging situations. [17:48] Unleashing Your Primal Brain: A Fun and Readable Journey into Evolutionary Psychology In his book "Unleash Your Primal Brain," Tim Ash skillfully delves into evolutionary psychology, presenting it in a captivating and concise manner. By condensing the essence of 30 books into one remarkable work, Ash explores the idea that all humans share a common operating system, tracing our thoughts and actions back to the entire arc of evolution. From primitive life forms to complex human traits like social nature and tribalism, the book covers a wide range of topics. Readers embark on a captivating journey exploring memory, learning, sleep, language, gender differences, and more, gaining insights into the deepest roots of our existence and the fascinating intricacies of what drives us. [25:07] The Evolution of Human Tribal Bonds and the Primal Polarization Toolkit Tim explains that as social beings, humans evolved to be strongly bonded to their tribes for survival. However, in modern society we belong to overlapping tribes. Ash shares the "primal polarization toolkit,” containing strategies like creating uncertainty, peer pressure, unanimity, and synchronized group activities that can be intentionally used to polarize groups, for better or worse. However, with awareness of these mechanisms, we can leverage them to foster bonding and cooperation. By recognizing how our brains evolved for tribalism, we can establish a sense of shared purpose, values and identity within workplaces, organizations, friend groups and beyond. This has implications for building loyalty, morale and productivity when applied ethically and for the benefit of all members.  Resources Mentioned: Unleash Your Primal Brain https://sitetuners.com/  https://www.timash.com Follow Adam… Sign up for my newsletter and get my free Foundations of Flow Training: Follow me and turn fear into flow! “Human evolution is largely a tribe on tribe competition. So being a tribal loyalist and transmitting that cultural package reliably, that's our survival edge,” explains Tim Ash, founder of Primal Brain, international keynote speaker, and bestselling author. Tim's career path from exiting his digital marketing agency to consulting and speaking was largely influenced by his background in evolutionary psychology. Today, Tim speaks on how to leverage evolutionary psychology to your advantage within your business.Successful entrepreneurship is primarily based in storytelling, which is all about transmitting cultural knowledge to others. Transmitting this information was a matter of life and death in the early days of humanity and even now, humans are hardwired to seek this tribal connectivity. Great digital marketing should build off the basic principles of storytelling. If you are looking to sell your product or service, appeal to peoples' emotions through sharing your story, as people inherently make decisions based on their emotions. In addition to using psychology to guide your sales and marketing strategies, it can be applied to managing your business as well. For example, Tim recommends starting with your hardest task that takes the most conscious thought first, as there is a limited amount of brain energy available to you. He also shares the shocking fact that caffeine is not actually a stimulant, nor does it act as a replacement for getting enough sleep. When you understand how the brain works and why it evolved to function in these ways, it becomes easier to understand how to build connections with others and how to influence their decision making process. No matter how far humans have come since first evolving, the brain continues to work in the same ways, constantly scanning the environment for danger, seeking tribal networks for a sense of security, and making decisions based on emotional response. Quotes“Never take criticism from someone you wouldn't go to for advice.” (5:00-5:05 | Tim) “Human evolution is largely a tribe on tribe competition. So being a tribal loyalist and transmitting that cultural package reliably, that's our survival edge.” (8:11-8:20 | Tim)“All major psychiatric conditions involve a sleep disturbance.” (10:03-10:08 | Tim)“No decision gets made without emotion.” (18:17-18:19 | Tim) “Tackle your hardest problem, the one that requires the most conscious thought, first.” (24:46-24:51 | Tim)LinksConnect with Welcome to ElomaInstagram: @welcometoelomaWebsite: WelcometoEloma.comWeekly Email Newsletter: bit.ly/RIXEmail Connect with Tim AshTim's website: https://TimAsh.comPrimal Bain: https://PrimalBrain.com Details here: https://acetheagenda.com/tim-ash-for-event-planners/Connect with KileySocial: @kileypeters + Linkedin.com/in/kileypetersWebsites: RAYNEIX.com ,

It's been a few years. Things have changed and so have I. Welcome back or welcome for the first time! Season 1 of the Primal Brain was all about brain health, with a focus on recovery through ancestral lifestyle and diet practices. But it was also a peak into our cultural landscape of health. How we approach ‘disease' is (possibly) more important than how we ‘cure' it. Culture is the invisible glue of health behavior. And in Season 2 of the Primal Brain we are digging into culture and health - why we do what we do, even when it makes no sense (which is often). We're going to discuss disruptors, groupthink and scientism. Get ready for a little salt, a lot of nerding out, a dash of modern witch and for Jennifer's special ability: Weaving together the tapestry of truth to elevate and clarify our perspective.

In this three-part series, Lauren talks about parts of the brain that most relate to emotions and behavior: Prefrontal Cortex – Thinking Brain or “Wise Owl”Limbic System – Emotional Brain or “Barking Dog”Brainstem – Reptilian Brain or “Fight or Flight”This episode is about the Brainstem, often referred to as the Reptilian Brain, the Primal Brain, or the Fight or Flight area. The Brainstem is located at the back of the skull, near the bottom of your brain. This area is wired for your survival and is responsible for all vital respiratory and cardiac functions. This part of the brain is responsible for our survival, so it's reactionary and impulsive. We do things without thinking. We just react. Lauren refers to it as the fight, flight, freeze, or fawn brain. How is this part of the brain involved in processing emotions and affecting behavior?Emotions are highly dependent on the body's networks that regulate alertness, involuntary body functions, motor, and sensory controls….all located in the brainstem. The brainstem parts play a critical role in emotional regulation. If the brainstem is under-developed, how can you learn to better self-regulate?Train the brainstem to be calm by embedding things like touch, movement, physical exercise, and breathing techniques. Thank you Newsstand Studio at 1 Rockefeller Plaza for providing a place for me to record this episode for y’all! No more Brooklyn closet recording!!!   Are you experiencing a lot of anxiety recently? Does it feel unsolvable? Like your anxiety attack will like it will never end? What if you had tools to help ease your anxiety in the moment?   As you know, May is Mental Health Awareness Month and we’re getting serious about mental health over here on The Refined Collective Podcast. Two weeks ago, I spoke with Trauma Therapist Kobe Campbell all about therapy (tune in here if you missed it). And last week, I shared my own experience with anxiety and practical ways to identify your anxiety triggers outside of the moment (tune in here if you missed it). This week, I wanted to share how you can stabilize your anxiety when you’re in the moment.   A Collective Anxiety Why are we experiencing so much anxiety? Collective depression + individual anxiety + trauma + relapses—from living in + through a pandemic — we’ve never done this before.  Brene Brown talks about FFT ‘It’s the F-ing first time’ Listen to her talk about it in this podcast episode. THIS IS THE 1ST PANDEMIC! Perspective  This is not going to last forever Reality Check Nothing is going as planned and that’s okay   The Science of Anxiety Our thoughts activate our minds, then our minds activate the body, then our body activates fight or flight. Symptoms like: dizziness, head rush, tingling, heart palpitations, paranoia, hypervigilance, can’t breathe, legs feel like jelly   3 Parts of the Brain NeoCortex/Prefrontal Cortex: rational, logic, problem-solving  Limbic: emotions, feeling, memories Reptilian/Primal: survival When we’re triggered, the Primal Brain gets activated and the other two shut down. In order to reactivate the others, you have to let the Primal Brain know you’re safe.   How do you speak to the Primal Brain to reactivate other two parts of our brain?   4 Things to Do In the Moment: Pause Breathe Mindful breathing DO IT NOW // 4 DEEP INHALES + EXHALES This activates the parasympathetic nervous system, meaning you feel safe and your body stops pumping cortisol and adrenaline. Quitting cigarette smoking is hard, in part, because it involves deep breathing. BOXED BREATHING (Navy SEALs use this!) Try it now (4x) Simple truths: I am safe and at home in my body I am here. I can breathe. I can feel discomfort and still be safe Ground Fear removes us from the moment. Runaway train of thought. Worst case scenarios. Tim Ash is a keynote speaker and best-selling author who has worked for top companies around the world. His knowledge of persuasion and online marketing has produced more than $1.2 billion of value for his clients.  He has presented at over 200 events across four continents on stages with more than 12,000 audience members. He was a co-founder and CEO of Site Tuners, a strategic digital optimization agency, and the founding chair of the international Digital Growth Unleashed event. He has helped brands such as Google, Facebook, and Expedia develop successful marketing initiatives and has authored more than 100 published articles. His most recent book, Unleash your Primal Brain, was released last month. In today's episode, Tim explains some of his secrets about creating successful landing pages. The Holy Trinity In order to create a successful landing page, there are three key questions to ask ourselves. Tim's “Holy Trinity” of landing page optimization includes the following:  What is the page about?  The first thing we should know is what the page is about.  This should be the headline.  We should know what the benefit of the form is. Often, this is the sub-headline.  What is the form asking me to do?  The CTA should fulfill the visitor's needs. What happens when I press the button?  Answers to each of these questions are essential in building a great landing page. We need to determine a purpose and provide a distinct Call to Action. Purpose  A successful landing page needs to have a purpose.  Tim defines a landing page as “any page that has significant potential to have economic value flow through it” and channels significant traffic. This means a landing page could be a campaign stand-alone page, the homepage of our website, a catalog that's indexed in shopping search engines, or a product detail page. Whatever the case, each landing page needs to have a specific goal and purpose. What problem is our landing page going to solve? Or as the number one question in Tim's Holy Trinity asks, what is the page about? Our landing page needs to focus on one specific goal. This purpose could be to raise awareness about a product or to get our customers to subscribe to our email list. Whatever the case, we have to make our purpose clear to our audience the second they land on our page.  The biggest mistake Tim sees people make is not addressing the needs of their audience. “The biggest mistake that I see marketers continue to make is that we're talking about stuff that's in our own self-interest as marketers. You know, ‘We're great,' ‘This is the world's best solution.'” Tim explained. “It's really [about] having that user-centered focus . . . A well-designed landing page is going to address the needs of the person. And only by doing that, can you make more money as a business.” Whether we want our consumers to watch a video, send an email, download an eBook, or make an appointment, it needs to be persuasive and focus on the visitor. We need to understand exactly who we are talking to. Who is my tribe? What are their values? The same story can have two very different meanings depending on the person and their cultural background. In order to make sure we are getting our message across, we must understand who our audience is.  “The question is, does [our landing page] meet the needs of the intended audience, and do a high percentage of visitors act and do the thing that you want them to do?” Tim said. “The point of the landing page is to align with the goals of the visitors and to have them take action.” Within the marketing funnel, our landing page is an essential element. The marketing funnel is a business process with steps, often starting with customer awareness and leading to purchase.  Call to Action A successful landing page needs to have a Call to Action (CTA). A CTA is the part of our landing page that tells our audience what we want them to do. This could be a form they need to fill out to “Subscribe Now” or a link that says “Read More” and directs them to our blog posts.  Here are some examples of a CTA: Subscribe here for FREE weekly newsletters Read more here Sign up now Follow our Twitter  Watch this video Book your appointment today for 15% off Contact us today for a FREE consultation The best CTAs (calls-to-action) often start with an action word, create a sense of urgency, and tell our audience what's in it for them (Source: SproutSocial). Questions two and three of Tim's Holy Trinity are: What is the form asking me to do? What happens when I press the button? We can also ask ourselves, where is the traffic going? Where do we want them to go? The CTA should answer these questions. Visual Clutter  A successful landing page needs to avoid visual clutter.  The second biggest mistake Tim sees on landing pages is visual clutter or “visual boogers” as he calls them. “[Visual clutter] is death by a thousand cuts,” Tim said. “We start decorating [our pages] with drop shadow on the button, or just obnoxious extraneous detail and ‘visual boogers,' I call them, all over your page and not having a sense of priorities. To me, landing pages should have a zen-like stillness, out of which the Call to Action naturally arises.”  To get someone on our website, we often need to interrupt them and fight for their attention. But once a visitor is on our website, it needs to be calm. We no longer need to compete for attention on the page. We need to simplify, simplify, simplify. We need to make our core message clear. For everything, ask, “Why is this on the page?” It should all have a purpose that goes back to our central goal.  “Figure out what's important, make that more visually prominent, and tone everything else down,” Tim said. “I'd say that taking a machete to all of the clutter on your website is step one.”  One tool we can use is a heat map to help determine what visitors aren't using, and then go through and remove all the elements people aren't clicking on. However, even before that, we should have the discipline to strip the access away so everything is visible on just one page (whether that be a laptop screen or phone screen). We shouldn't have to scroll. If we do, we can cut more stuff. We should only have things on our landing page that answer the three questions in Tim's Holy Trinity to landing pages.  “The visual priorities are, what's the page about? That's the headline. What's the form asking me to do? That's the form sub-headline. And what happens when I press the button? And that should be stated in terms of what's useful to the visitor. What do they get? So, if you have those three things as your top three visually prominent things on the page, you win, and anything else just needs to go,” Tim explained.  Trust A successful landing page needs to establish trust.  Trust has to precede the conversation. “Another thing that marketers can take advantage of is badges that indicate various kinds of trust. Whether it's a transactional trust or third party credibility or testimonials, awards, that kind of stuff can be really, really powerful. Instead of you saying you're great, get other people saying you're great,” Tim said.  One of the most important things is our approach. The biggest mistake we can make is designing our page to focus on our own interests and toot our own horn. We don't want to make our landing page an ad. We must have an outside-in mentality, meaning we are user-centered. As we do this, we build trust with our visitors and they will be more likely to complete our CTA.  Key Takeaways Thank you so much Tim for sharing your stories and knowledge with us today. Here are some of my key takeaways from this episode: Our landing page needs to have a single, central purpose. Our landing page needs to be focused on solving a problem for our audience.  Our landing page needs to have a strong CTA (call to action) with clear benefits for our visitors. Our landing page needs to be simple. We need to cut out the clutter. Everything on our page should align with our central goal.  Our landing page needs to establish trust.  Connect with Tim If you enjoyed this interview and want to learn more about Tim or connect with him, you can visit timash.com, and listen to part two of this episode. To understand marketing you first need to understand the essential core of human beings. It's time to learn about the foundations of what makes a person tick to then recognize how to best influence them. A Marketing Thought Leader, Visionary, Keynote Speaker, Forbes Top 10 Online Marketing Expert, Entrepreneur Magazine Top 15, Best Selling Author of Landing Page Optimization: The Definitive Guide to Testing and Tuning for Conversations and now Unleash Your Primal Brain: The Essential Field Guide For Modern Marketers, Chief Strategy Advisor at SiteTuners, Tim Ash, dives into the exciting new discipline of neuromarketing and unconscious persuasion.   Takeaways: As a marketer, spend less time on the new technology and latest updates. Instead, focus on the evolutionary psychology basis of influencing people. Elicit strong emotions to help your audience create memorable experiences about your brand. The brain is a big ignoring machine - influence those emotions! Stories are fundamentally about the narrative of causality in the world. They are for us to get experience without going through the process. They are there to reinforce cultural beliefs and values. Acknowledge people for who they are and make them feel seen with attention and intention. Ask questions, personalize, and unlock their passions to connect on a deeper level. Tim Ash is a very interesting guy. He is both an authority on evolutionary psychology and digital marketing, which puts him in pretty rarified air. He is the bestselling author of Unleash Your Primal Brain and Landing Page Optimization (with over 50,000 copies sold worldwide and translated into six languages). He has been identified by Forbes as a Top-10 Online Marketing Expert, and by Entrepreneur Magazine as an Online Marketing Influencer To Watch. Our conversation with Tim focused on his most recent book, Unleash Your Primal Brain, and addressed a question very central to behavioral science today: What is rational? This led to addressing how biases and heuristics are grounded in important evolutionary foundations. Tim likens the way we talk about biases today as glitches in the matrix when we should be acknowledging them for what they are: important evolutionary tools to help us survive our environments and thrive in our tribes. We also discussed the importance of culture and its central focus on the way humans learn to be human. A paradox we discussed is that culture is dependent on tribe members passing down the cultural (social) norms to the next generation without interruption, and yet cross-tribal collaboration is what has given us an evolutionary edge. Tim notes, that what we need to do today is to “stretch beyond our current tribes needs to go and make the effort to contact other people that are very different from us.” And the consequences of not doing that, according to Tim, “ …are going to be the ones that are going to bring down the larger society.” Fascinating stuff. We hope you’ll find this conversation with this insightful researcher and speaker as exciting as we did. And if you do like it, please give us a quick 5-star rating or a two-sentence review. YOUR SEXUALITY IS YOUR POWER. We're so excited to have Certified Tantra, Love and Relationship Coach, Sarrah Rose on our show today. Sarrah advocates for how self-love and healing are necessary for both men and women to heal their relationship with their sexuality. The path to promote a more sex positive culture has NOT been easy and she opens up about this with her upbringing and relational trauma. Let's dive in and find out about these other healing modalities and simply talk about sex. [3:14] Who Is Sarrah Rose? Sarrah explains how a yoga class at the Fashion Institute of Technology (FIT) led her to tantra and its role in releasing emotional trauma inhibiting us from fully stepping into our sexual identities.  [5:11] Misconceptions of Sexuality. Sarrah explains that these misconceptions are gender dependent. Men and women sex is bad or dangerous, or oppsite conditioning in having. Women sex is bad, can't display sexuality. Conditioning to make sexual trauma through, sets a very ripe stage for people to experience a lot of sexual abuse and trauma. Sex negative society [8:00] Sex-Negative Culture. When we shove down our sexuality, which is a part of our biology, the more thwarted and fearful it becomes.  The lack of conversations around sex lead to misconceptions about what are sexuality is supposed to be like. Sarrah emphasizes how self-love is where we can begin in promoting a more sex-positive culture [12:51] Role of the Primal Brain. We dive into a little how our feelings around sex being safe is rooted in trauma stored in the primal brain, internal resistance [17:56] Tantra and Shadow Work. Sarrah and Nina share their own trauma with infidelity and development of performance anxiety. Sarrah explains how shadow work and tantra were two main healing modalities to bring the repressed parts of herself back to our consciousness to integrate and heal them. [25:00] Lacking Sexual Confidence Impacting More Than We Think. Sarrah explains how lack of intimacy or sexual confidence impacts our self actualization in other areas of our lives. She explains this impact through utilizing the chakra system and Maslow's hierarchy of needs. [30:00] What is Tantra? We try to break the taboo around tantra as we ask Sarrah to explain what this is, it's origins in India, as well as the difference between Classical and Neo-Tantra. [33:25] 4 Tantric Basics To Begin Healing. Sarrah dives into how to breath, sound, movement and focus are used and how putting these four pieces together expands your sexual energy.  We jaw drop about generating how movement and manipulation of energy can generate energy orgasms...WHAT THE WHAT! [41:21] Sex Magic. This lovely, empowering  practice that Sarrah describes helps us define the identity we want to show up in the bedroom and further define what we want to experience. [46:00] Building Sexual Confidence and Consent is SEXY. We discuss how using our voice is a big empowering step forward, especially with consent and how changing our mindset to be wealthy with our sexual energy. This all begins with healing our relationship sexually [1:02:00] What Was Sarrah's Be You Not Them Moment? The question we ask all our guests on the Be You Not Them podcast.  We hope that Sarrah's experience and advocacy shed a little more light on what it means to be sexually empowered and how critical tantra is as a healing modality to get our sexual power back. "There's no such thing as a rational decision," says Tim Ash, an authority on evolutionary psychology and digital marketing. As humans we believe we're special because of our ability to tame the wild horses of our emotions, and that reasoning is our highest attainment. "It's just not true," Tim says. "It's the big lie." Central to that, of course, is storytelling. It plays a central role in the primal brain. "We can't resist stories. They're like a back door, a trap door, into our head. They very quickly dismantle any notion of objectivity, because we get caught up in syncing up with the storyteller and experiencing that story."

Influencing people isn't just creativity and content mixed together. It's the by-product of the way our brains function. As we experience that content or creativity, hormones release into our system that make us feel safe, happy, sad, angry or any of the other range of emotions. People are subject to their own brain chemistry and cognitive reactions to their environments. When marketers and influencers understand how that works in their fellow humans, they can influence and persuade more effectively. That's why Tim Ash, a computer and cognitive scientist with years of experience building digital experiences for brands, wrote his new book. Unleash Your Primal Brain - Demystifying How We Think and Why We Act. The book explains everything from the evolution of us as a species to the happiness hormones and what triggers them. Tim and I talked about the book, how cognitive science can inform marketers about working with influencers and vice-versa. He also broke down the brain science behind influence in the first place. [03:39] Tim’s interest and fascination with the brain started very early and were a huge part of his college studies.  [05:43] Brains didn’t just pop into existence.  We are the product of evolution and in order to understand us, you have to understand the whole evolutionary art.  [06:42] Sophisticated brains are at least 500 million years old.   [07:18] Insects and animals need brains because we are in a world of movement; brains are really only to help us think fast enough to survive in the environment (which is why plants don’t need brains but still develop adaptive tendencies).  [07:58] The brain is a very energy-intensive system.  [08:29] The body is balancing between digestive, voluntary movement, and the brain. When you run out of energy you need sleep and rest.  [09:08] Whenever we are not doing computation or planning tasks, we default to modeling our environment.   [11:26] One of the key insights in Tim’s book is understanding that we made an evolutionary bet on culture spread. We can learn more from our surrounding tribe by copying than we can ever in a lifetime of direct experience. That gives us our tribal edge.  [13:38] We are born covered in fat and we use that fat to isolate the neurons in the brain so there’s no cross-talk or electrical issues.  [15:15] We get enjoyment by helping others and transmitting knowledge.  [18:09] One of the huge puzzles that needed to be unlocked from an evolutionary standpoint was “Who (and what) do I learn from?” We want to learn from successful examples.   [19:13] We are wired to learn from people that are most like us.  [21:17] Once somebody locks into a tribe it is very hard to have them accept other views. A big task is pulling towards the center and somehow having a larger circle of empathy.  [23:19] When employees embrace different teams (creating silos) they make it more difficult for the business to be successful.  [25:06] Thinking we are individuals and our happiness matters is a very western idea.  Most of the world thinks more communally.   [27:06] We are hypersocial animals with a need for connection. The worst thing you can do to somebody is isolate them.   [28:46] Isolation literally drives us insane.   [29:37] As teenagers, you are transferring your allegiance from your parents to your larger group of peers. Parents have less influence than their peers.  [32:36] We do a lot of our brain development out of the womb when it really should be prenatal.  It is really important to make the first five years solid from a nutritional, sleep, and social attachment standpoint because you can’t undo it later in life.   [33:29] Direct experience with other people and forcing them to walk a mile in other peoples’ shoes is your best bet for creating good humans.   [34:08] Primarily storytelling is to simulate experience and do things we can’t directly do.  The other unestimated reason for storytelling is to maintain cohesion and the values of our tribe so knowledge spreads faster.  [35:30] The cultural package determines how we examine and experience the same story.   [38:41] Tim’s book really helps us understand the brain and how that ties into marketing, messages, interpersonal relationships, and more.   [40:35] Tim wrote his book to explain the why behind the brain and behaviors. If you want to understand the why behind the brain, you have to see how it all evolved.   [41:23] Grab Tim’s book here and get an autographed copy (limited time offer).  [42:25] It is so important to understand genetics and history to really understand behavior. [44:22] If you haven’t connected with me yet, please do! I love to give shout outs and spread the love whenever I can. Unleash Your Primal Brain: Demystifying How We Think and Why We Act by Tim Ash Understand what makes you human! This book is about the commonalities all 8,000,000,000 people on Earth share. Drop a rock. It falls and hits the ground. Once you understand brain evolution, many of our behaviors will become more predictable. To a scary degree, we are reactive animals ruled by passions and not the rational geniuses with free will that we like to imagine. First the bad news: The notion that people make decisions and choices to maximize objective self-interest has been demolished. People are not rational — far from it. Now the good news: We are finding out exactly how and why we act in these seemingly irrational ways. In other words, there is a method to our seeming madness. We evolved for a particular environment, but our rapid social advances and mushrooming populations have created a bewildering new world. On the timescale of this dizzying change, evolution has effectively stopped, and we must rely on what has gotten us this far. By retracing the path that our distant ancestors took to get here, we can understand the stunning abilities and glaring weaknesses which we have inherited. Sometimes our reactions and responses are appropriate and uncannily helpful. In the blink of an eye, we can assess complex situations and reach critical life-or-death decisions. At other times, we are seemingly our own worst enemies — repeating the same mistakes, even when we know the results will be counterproductive, or even deadly. Unlocking the true nature of the human brain is the last frontier. Recent work in fields such as biology, neuroscience, evolutionary psychology, medical imaging, social science, and behavioral economics is combining to show us the inner workings of this evolutionary marvel. This book is designed for you — the curious and intelligent searcher for truth. Tim Ash ran the strategic Conversion Rate Optimization agency, SiteTuners for over 20 years, a business that has generated over $1.2 billion in value for its clients. At the core of that success was a deep understanding of neurobiology, which Tim explores in detail in his new book ‘Unleash Your Primal Brain’. In this episode of The Breakout Growth Podcast, Sean Ellis interviews Tim to better understand how “what makes us bizarrely and uniquely human” can be used to help us drive growth. The conversation is spirited as Tim holds some contrarian views to Sean when it comes to driving growth through high-velocity testing and optimization practices. However, there is also plenty of common ground as they discuss how the biology of the brain impacts everything from interpersonal relationships to politics, and how an understanding of these ideas can be applied to accelerate growth for businesses. Both Sean and Tim are passionate about the importance of driving value for end-users as the foundation for unlocking growth, and there are exciting learnings as Tim explains how “relentless dissatisfaction” can help companies find opportunities to drive significant improvements. According to Tim, “‘Unleash Your Primal Brain’ may help you make a billion dollars or even become the next Dalai Lama, but at the very least this interview will help you understand how a deeper look into your own brain can help you understand and influence others. We discussed: How neuro-marketing and principles from ‘Influence’ by Robert Cialdini’s helped shape Tim’s thinking and his book How the biology of the brain and cultural and genetic co-evolution impact our lives as humans The do-nothing status quo and why companies fail when they try to be nice instead of appealing to our survival instincts to avoid pain Why companies need to focus on value over product and put the emphasis on learning from customers How neurobiology and science fit into the test/learn approach to growth How motivation, ability and triggers work together to drive action

Thriving with Nature: Living a Regenerative Lifestyle

In 1979 James Lovelock published a book called Gaia. It hypothesised that planet earth was a macro-organism that regulated itself across the millions of smaller systems that made up the whole. As a whole, we, as a human race, are almost compared as a virus or disease that needs to be healed otherwise we will cause the whole thing to collapse… or at least make ourselves extinct so Gaia can get back into balance. For us to get to a better place we need to shift our mindset from listening to our Primal Brain and start to plan and follow through with our Prefrontal Cortex. In today’s episode I discuss this idea and how we if we can master our minds, we could reverse our mistakes and truly thrive on this planet...Join the conversation here: https://thrivingwithnature.com/?p=1040Become a Patreon: https://www.patreon.com/thrivingwithnatureWatch on YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/c/thrivingwithnature Join Instagram: https://instagram.com/thrivingwithnature Follow on Facebook: https://facebook.com/thrivingwithnature

What you’ll learn: What is Neuropsychology? What is the belief about our neurons? Brain Structure and Roles The 3 brains What is Neuropsychology? By definition Neuropsychology is a branch of psychology that is concerned with how the brain and the rest of the nervous system influence our behaviors, thoughts, and feelings. What is a Neuron? Neurons are considered the basic building blocks of life. Previously, scientists believed that most of the neural pathways were established in or early childhood and during our adulthood our brain cells declined over time. Brain Structures and Roles Ninety percent of what we know about the potential of our human brain has been discovered during the last 20 years – it fact we’re only at the tip of the iceberg. Our brain is divided into three main parts, each with distinctive functions. The Primal Brain The first part is known as the primal brain. This section regulates the bodily functions we don’t consciously control, like breathing and sweating. The Primal Brain responses to survival and stress. The Limbic Brain Second is the Limbic brain, which constantly scans our environment for danger or reward. It’s also the emotional hub of our brain, dealing with feelings and memories. It is part of the brain involved in our behavioural and emotional responses, specifically when it comes to behaviors we respond in five ways: Feeding, Fighting, Fleeing, Freeze… and Reproduction. The Executive Brain Third is the Executive Brain which is responsible for reason, analysis, and the handling of emotions that stem from other parts of the brain. It’s the part of our brain focused on controlling behaviors like planning, decision-making, problem-solving, self-control, and acting with long-term goals in mind. Essentially it is focused on transformation, growth and achieving a vision. This mindset is the most powerful but the hardest to sustain. We need our Limbic and Executive brains to work together, otherwise we would continuously fall victim to our impulses. Say you hear something you dislike you and you feel a sudden urge to punch that person in the face – this is the emotional reaction of the limbic brain. But if you pause for a moment and breath, you’ll realize that punching that person could result in a legal action. So you decide to calm down. This is your Executive brain doing its duty and preventing you from impulsive behavior. The 3 brains Did you know you have three brains? Yes, you read that right! You have three brains – your MIND, HEART, and your GUT brain. Leave some feedback: What should we talk about next? Please let me know. Did you enjoy this episode? If so, please leave a short review. There isn’t a single complete scientific model of persuasion. Most people, therefore, believe that persuasion is more an art than a science. In addition, most of our attempts to persuade are doomed to fail because the brains of your audience are wired to automatically reject messages that disrupt their attention. ----more---- In this podcast, we will learn that Persuasion can all be linked to brain science and that the Primal Brain of your audience (the most primitive section of their brain) drives their decision-making process. You will also discover what can stimulate that primal organ and how this translates into four critical questions you need to address to maximize your probability to PERSUADE. About our guest: PATRICK RENVOISECo-Founder & Chief Persuasion Officer, SalesBrain Prior to co-founding SalesBrain Patrick, an expert in complex sales, was in charge of Business Development first at Silicon Graphics then at LinuxCare. While marketing super-computers and multi-million software solutions to some of the world’s most brilliant scientists at NASA, Shell, Boeing, Airbus, BMW, and more, he became fascinated by the human brain. Patrick then started to investigate a scientific model to explain how humans use their brain to make buying decisions. He spent 2 years researching and formalizing the first, 100% science-based PERSUASION model called NeuroMAP™. In 2002 Patrick and his business partner Dr. Christophe Morin co-authored the first book on Neuromarketing and published NeuroMAP™. This proprietary, award-winning methodology has been used for the past 16 years to help over 6,000 companies worldwide SCIENTIFICALLY PERSUADE.

Most of our attempts to persuade are doomed to fail because the brains of your audience is wired to automatically reject messages that disrupt their attention. Most people believe that persuasion is more an art than a science because there is not a single complete scientific model of persuasion. In this podcast, we will learn...----more---- that Persuasion can all be linked to brain science and that the Primal Brain of your audience (the most primitive section of their brain) drives their decision making process. You will also discover what can stimulate that primal organ and how this translate into 4 critical questions you need to address to maximize your probability to PERSUADE. The Persuasion Code by Patrick Renvoise & Dr. Christophe Morin Today is a special day because within the last 24 hours the sequel to the most important business book in the past 95 years has been published.  Not since Scientific Advertising by Claude C. Hopkins, has the business book, Neuromarketing, Understanding the Buy Buttons in your Customer Brain, which sold 200,000 copies, changed the way we market and sell.  This is a book that launched hundreds of consultancies, created thousands of articles, numerous me-too books and changed marketing direction efforts for thousands of companies.  The sequel, long awaited and anticipated is “The Persuasion Code.”  We have Patrick Renvoise one of the co-authors with us today to discuss what this book delivers that so many have waited for.   For the uninitiated, Patrick explains Neuromarketing and then continues with: What he and his co-authored have learned in the intervening years since the original book was published. We discuss the considerable research, since the first book, which underpins this work. We ask what, if anything, he learned since 2001 which has surprised the authors? We discuss the famous Neuromap and ask if anything has changed in the  “Neuromap” brain based theory. Renvoise covers three take a ways that every marketer can learn that will change the way they sell and market.  About Patrick Renvoise, Co-Founder & Chief Persuasion Officer of SalesBrain Prior to co-founding SalesBrain Patrick, an expert in complex sales, was in charge of Business Development first at Silicon Graphics then at LinuxCare. In this episode we announce the NEW website - www.primalbrain.net - where all things Primal Brain live. This includes up and coming announcements about the book, sneak peaks at the cover art for the book (which is bad-ass!) and more. We talk about how the brain actually works - via cumulative electrical wave patterns. It's a weird concept that takes us out of thinking about our brain structure/organ and into thinking about the how the brain functions - coherent electrical signals. It sounds all complicated, but it's fairly simple. And you're still in charge of your own neuroplasticity (sorry, no passes!).

Many people in the world act as if they are under constant, extreme stress. The Primal Brain is activated by perceived and/or real threats; and what happens physiologically is the same in both instances.  Recognizing we are under this sort of stress because of our human wiring helps us live more peacefully. Work constructively with your own Primal Brain.
