After writing his first book last year, speaker and leadership consultant Peter Kozodoy firmly believes in the power of networking to generate awareness and ramp up book sales.   Author of Honest to Greatness: How Today's Greatest Leaders Use Brutal Honesty to Achieve Massive Success, Peter tells Published Author Podcast host Josh Steimle that all of the speaking opportunities he's received have been either through his book agent or his network.   “It's all been about: ‘Who do I know? How can I reach out and ask for help? How can I get introductions?'  “Over the course of the last four years I've probably talked to around 1,000 people on the phone. Just like sending my Calendly link to anybody who talked to me, just to play hopscotch . . . to get all these relationships and put them all in place and get these pick-ups.”  TOP TAKEAWAY: WRITE A BOOK TO GROW YOUR PLATFORM AND INFLUENCE  Peter began writing his book about four years ago, but not to grow his business. His goal was to develop keynote opportunities. “It's about having a platform. So people are: ‘Oh, yeah, we need someone to speak about . . . . we need an expert on, you know, honesty, right? Honesty in society, strategic honesty for results, etc'. And so I want it to be that guy.”  Peter's strategy is working. Already, he has plenty of gigs for some great national conferences throughout 2021. “These are the things where people hear you, they develop a relationship in an hour, and then they go buy the book.”   In fact, Peter's take on speaking is that it's such a successful tactic for him, he'll use it with his next book instead of PR. “Next time, what would I do differently? I would approach marketing and PR completely differently. I would do zero PR. The number one, two, and three things I would do is just go out and speak, secure speaking gigs, and I'll probably do podcasts.”  STORYTELLING IS ESSENTIAL  Peter's advice to entrepreneurs who are starting to write their book is that it's essential to use storytelling in their writing, otherwise their book will be dry and dull.  “It's gotta be all about story and fun stories. Because otherwise, it's just like: ‘Hey, did you know that honesty is the best policy? I'm going to tell you why that's true'. My goodness, no!  “I'm really inspiring in others the anger that I had by telling them the stories that fired me up. And now they're fired up with me, I'm taking them on that journey,” he explains. “Don't worry about making it pretty. Don't worry about the structure. Worry about what is the story you want to tell. And within that, how do you chunk it up?”  WORKING WITH A TRADITIONAL PUBLISHER  Peter chose to work with a traditional publisher and was picked up by Benbella Books. He says the experience was exceptional and really pushed him to dig deep and produce an excellent book.   When Peter submitted his first draft to his editor, he was convinced that it was awesome. But she sent it back, asking Peter to rewrite 90 percent of the book!  “Now, seeing where the book has gotten to, through multiple rounds of editors, the agent, the publishing house owner . . . all these people lending their perspective and eyes on it, I can't put $1 amount on them. That was invaluable.  Peter freely admits that compared to self-publishing, working with a traditional publisher was much more expensive and a lot more soul-crushing. Even so, he's glad he did it, because without enduring, he would have “essentially put out a piece of junk that I would have been convinced was great.   The book is my entire platform. If the book sucks, and misses the mark, it really reflects badly on me.”  WRITING A BOOK IS HARD WORK!  Peter cautions that writing a book oneself is incredibly hard work, and that he thinks it should be hard, otherwise as a writer you're not going deep, getting vulnerable, or pushing yourself out of your comfort zone.   “Writing a book has been one of the most difficult challenges I've ever faced. I've built a multi million dollar company, by the way, and I've also done a triple Lutz on finger skates. So I am telling you, writing a book is really hard!”  Peter explores lots more in this episode, including how to make a pitch to a publisher, and how to bag speaking gigs. It's an essential listen if you're ready to write your book!  LINKS  Twitter  LinkedIn  Instagram  Facebook  PeterKozodoy.com   SUBSCRIBE TO THE PUBLISHED AUTHOR PODCAST  If you enjoyed this episode, don't forget to subscribe on Apple Podcasts, Spotify, Google Podcasts, or anywhere else you listen to podcasts. And with near-perfect information, we’ve begun to make dramatically different choices about what we buy, flattening leaders and organizations who have historically relied on deceit to achieve success. In Honest to Greatness, serial Inc. “Honest to Greatness is a timely read for anyone who wants to engage with consumers in today’s market. Peter Kozodoy sheds light on why some companies soar and others falter. Peter Kozodoy is the author of Honest to Greatness, an Inc. 5000 serial entrepreneur, TEDx speaker and business coach who works with organizations and their leaders to help them overcome self-limiting bullsh*t and use brutal honesty to achieve massive success. But it didn’t start that way. At 17, he was an Olympic-hopeful figure skater who was sure he would achieve his childhood dream of attending Harvard University. By 18, he had missed both the Olympics and Harvard, and found his life spiraling out of control...until he finally discovered the power of brutal honesty, particularly when it comes to being honest with yourself. From the depths of 2008, Peter and his business partner built an Inc. 5000 marketing agency that would go on to work with startups to the Fortune 500, and local car dealers to Warren Buffett. Peter’s tough lessons learned — in business, leadership, and entrepreneurship — have appeared in Inc., Forbes, The Huffington Post and more, and his work at GEM has earned Telly, Pixie, Communicator, Aurora, Davey and W3 awards. He has shared his story at TEDx, CEO Clubs of America, Digital Book World and many other conferences and corporations, spreading his mission to help leaders use brutal honesty to achieve massive success in business and in life. Peter has been a member of both Entrepreneurs' Organization (New York Chapter) and the Young Entrepreneur Council, and has served on the boards of the Greater New Haven Chamber of Commerce and Junior Achievement in Connecticut. He holds a BA in Economics from Brandeis University (Summa cum Laude and Phi Beta Kappa) and an MBA from Columbia Business School, and also holds a black belt in Taekwondo which earned him a trophy that’s taller than he is (which, admittedly, isn’t very tall).

Peter Kozodoy shares insights from his new book “Honest to Greatness” about the transformative value of Honesty. He also shares techniques to help you use honesty to break barriers, motivate and improve performance, and build relationships of trust and respect. This episode is gold! If you enjoy this episode you will love reading Peter's book “Honest to Greatness”.  Highlighted Quotes “Investing” I have a Warren Buffett approach to investing and I don't just mean financially... I mean, investing in myself as a human. If I can spend a little bit of time and money now to have an asset that will serve me for the rest of my life. I'll take that bet all day long.  I'm now never not going to have an MBA from an Ivy League school? I'm now never not going to be an author... is this stuff  painful? Yes. Is it expensive? You would not believe how expensive it is but I think of it in terms of the long-term benefit versus the short term cost? And by the way thinking long-term is a big part of how I define honesty in order to achieve outcomes. If you're going to be honest about what it takes you've got to think long-term.   “Honesty is Universal” If Honesty is the best policy then it must work universally... and guess what, it does. You can use it as a frontline employee, a middle manager, or an 11 year old girl scout. You just have to understand the nuances of how to use it because it's very different in practice if you're the CEO of a big company or a Frontline employee with no formal Authority. It is different if you're at those different places, but it does work. You just have to be Strategic and not just blurt it out... It is strategic honesty.   “Ego” There are two things that happen with ego. One, the bigger our ego, the bigger our blind spot. This means the bigger the number of things that we don't know or are willing to admit about ourselves... things other people already know... and that can be so dangerous because it erodes trust. The second thing that happens is that you close yourself off to understanding what is true and you incur opportunity costs... because the further we are from the truth the further we are from capitalizing on what the facts can give us. There are two questions that I'm on a mission to have everyone adopt to help repress that ego that reptilian, responsive, emotional brain we have that can be so damaging to ourselves and our relationships and to society. The two questions are these: “Is that true?” and “How do I know?” Resources/Mentions:   Books Radical Candor: Be a Kick-Ass Boss Without Losing Your Humanity So You've Been Publicly Shamed   Videos Peter's TEDx Speech    Guest Links: Peterkozodoy.com Peter Kozodoy Linkedin  Peter Kozodoy Instagram   Podcast Links: Instagram: @Hopestrategy  Facebook: @hopestrategy  Twitter: @thehopestrategy Youtube The Hope Strategy

Join my free community on Facebook for more business advice: www.myfbgroup.com TRE:67 - If you're struggling to get your business going or you're feeling like you're in a rut, the problem is probably you. (Sorry about it.) In today's episode, Peter Kozodoy. Author of Honest To Greatness, shows us how honesty can be used as a strategy to start and grow any business to a successful exit. He also shares his experience failing to get into the Olympics, starting a video production company that went belly-up, and then successfully growing a multi-million dollar marketing firm. Get the full episode details and transcript: https://bit.ly/2CpiEye ----- 3 Main Takeaways: A business should never be built around you at the center. It should be built as a self-managed cash flow machine with the intention of being sold at some point in the future. 100% of your business problems are actually personal problems in disguise. There is no point in worrying about things in business as all it does is create stress over things you can't control anyway. ----- Show Notes: 1:50 - Give us a short synopsis of your new book “Honest To Greatness” Peter was fascinated by the fact that some companies could take his marketing firm's growth strategies and crush it while others just blew up on the launch pad, and he wanted to know why. Through a few turn of events, he came to realize that it all boiled down to how these companies used honesty as a strategy for growth. Even as a cynic, Peter knows that honesty is what makes organizations great. 5:23 - Walk us through the resistance you felt when you thought you were writing a marketing book but your editor told you otherwise. Peter says that if we allow ourselves the creative space to test things, and we're open minded enough to try new things, we can find our own greatness. Honesty is an act of attrition. It's about removing things from your life, not adding things. There's a difference between being honest and being helpful. 8:36 - What is a “crisis of honesty”? At 18, Peter had 2 of his dreams crushed. He wanted to be an Olympic figure skater and he had always dreamed of going to Harvard.  Reflecting back on this experience at 30, he realized that they had become 2 massive chips on his shoulder holding him back. 15:44 - What steps did you take to move through that crisis and know that things were going to be ok? Peter focused on creating and he took to learning as much as possible. What honest actions am I taking today to set myself up for success in 10 years from now? 20 years from now? He learned to listen to what truly is important to him. 22:20 - Perils & Pearls. What is the biggest peril you've faced as an entrepreneur and what pearl got you out of it? Even though he went to Columbia and got an MBA, he fundamentally misunderstood what business is. He started by building a terrible business that would have never worked. Then he realized that business is simply cashflow and when you build something, focus on the systems that will help it run itself, create profits, manage itself, etc. 32:50 - You're so brilliant with what you've learned over the years, how and in what ways do you serve people in your coaching? Peter specializes in working with entrepreneurs because they are fast to move and make changes, vs. a corporation that could take years to make changes. He runs an 8-week business bootcamp to help people just getting started and he also has a mastermind group called Forum, which focuses on the “5%” of activities that matter the most. 40:12 - Where can people go to get ahold of you and take advantage of what you offer? www.honesttogreatness.com Take the quiz! www.peterkozodoy.com/bonus to get the new book! 42:42 - How can we strategically use honesty in our business to grow? Peter says our assumptions about business are what's killing us. The first place to be honest is with ourselves, and to see where we need to improve. When we as entrepreneurs fail to communicate the entire truth with the people, customers, vendors that we work with, we lose. Be honest about what it takes to run an actual thriving business. 52:57 - If you could go back 5-10 years in the past and give yourself one piece of advice, what would it be? Stop worrying.  ----- Subscribe to The Rising Entrepreneur Podcast on all your favorite apps and outlets!
