A nightmare when travelling is losing your bags, and then nightmare is intensified when you rely on what is in those bags to do you job. Phil and Lisa share their experience of a recent facilitation program in Europe where their bag of props did not arrive. They quickly pivoted and adapted their program to work with the resources they had. In this conversation, Chris Ortiz, Lisa, and Phil discuss the elements of planning and co-facilitation that contributed to the success of a program despite facing setbacks. They emphasize the importance of understanding the goals and themes of activities, rather than just focusing on the activities themselves. They also highlight the value of radical acceptance and trust in co-facilitation, allowing each facilitator to bring their own style and ideas to the program. The conversation touches on the significance of having a process for planning and preparation, as well as the benefits of incorporating novel and unique aspects into a program. Overall, the conversation highlights the resilience and adaptability required in facilitation, and the importance of maintaining a positive and flexible mindset. Quickly pivot and adapt when faced with unexpected challenges Focus on what you have and make adjustments as needed Avoid over-apologizing or mentioning what's missing Value the importance of planning and preparation, even if the original plan doesn't work out Understand the goals and themes of activities, rather than just focusing on the activities themselves. Radical acceptance and trust are key in co-facilitation, allowing each facilitator to bring their own style and ideas. Having a process for planning and preparation is important for a successful program. Incorporating novel and unique aspects into a program can enhance engagement and create memorable experiences. In this conversation, Phil Brown, Lisa Hunt, and Chris Ortiz discuss the TV show 'The Bear' and its connections to the book 'The Power of Moments' by Chip and Dan Heath. They explore the key concepts of elevation, pride, insight, and connection, and how these concepts are reflected in the show and their work as facilitators. They also discuss the importance of recognizing and valuing others, the power of small gestures, and the role of charisma and sociability in building connections. The four key concepts are summarized below; Elevation: This concept refers to moments that rise above the routine, mundane experiences of everyday life. These are the moments that make us feel lifted, inspired, or transformed. Elevation moments often involve surprise, joy, or awe, leaving a lasting impact on individuals. Pride: Pride moments are those in which individuals feel a sense of accomplishment, recognition, or validation for their efforts. These moments are characterized by a feeling of mastery, competence, or success. They often involve overcoming challenges or obstacles, leading to a boost in self-esteem and motivation. Insight: Insight moments occur when individuals gain a new understanding, perspective, or realization about themselves, others, or the world around them. These moments often come from moments of clarity, reflection, or learning, leading to personal growth, development, or transformation. Connection: Connection moments involve deepening relationships, fostering empathy, or strengthening bonds between individuals. These moments can arise from shared experiences, acts of kindness, or moments of vulnerability, leading to a sense of belonging, trust, and intimacy. Takeaways The TV show 'The Bear' provides examples of powerful moments that can be created intentionally. The concepts of elevation, pride, insight, and connection from 'The Power of Moments' book can be applied to both the show and facilitation work. Recognizing and valuing others is important in creating moments of pride. Breaking the script and creating unexpected experiences can elevate moments and engage participants. Building connections and practicing sociability are essential for effective facilitation. In this episode, the Phil, Lisa and Chris Ortiz discuss the TV show 'The Bear', produced by FX and available on HULU, and its relevance to their work in team development and group dynamics. They explore the complex characters and the impact of first impressions. The family dynamics and relationships in the show are also highlighted. The hosts provide a brief synopsis of the show and discuss the symbolism and bookending used in the storytelling. They compare 'The Bear' to another popular show, 'Ted Lasso,' and discuss the raw emotion and uncomfortable moments depicted in 'The Bear.' The importance of observation and group dynamics in facilitation work is emphasized. The concept of individual expression versus conformity is explored, along with the resistance to change and the need for alignment. The episode concludes with a preview of future episodes. Takeaways; First impressions can be misleading, and people often have more dimensions than they initially present. The show 'The Bear' portrays raw emotion and uncomfortable moments, allowing viewers to sit in the discomfort and reflect on real-life experiences. Observation of group dynamics is an essential skill for facilitators, and 'The Bear' provides valuable insights into the dynamics of a kitchen staff. Balancing individual expression and conformity is crucial in team dynamics and program design. Resistance to change can be overcome by creating alignment and focusing on the benefits of adopting new practices. It all started with high school photography class projects that he based around his passion, skateboarding. As his career grew, he helped revolutionize the media world with 411 video magazine and eventually made his way to the contest scene running things at the Dew Tour. We’re joined by special guests Matt Lantrip and Chris Ortiz to discuss the Merc With A Mouth. That’s right, we’re talking DEADPOOL. No, not THAT Deadpool. The good one where his mouth isn’t sewn shut and he shoots lasers out of his eyes. This is the one where Negasonic Teenage Warhead steals all her scenes without speaking. THAT Deadpool. Chimichangas. Salvador Sanchez and his friend Chris Ortiz made a big move from Austin Texas to Lexington Kentucky to open A Cup of Commonwealth - a premium coffee joint with a pay-it-forward mentality. Through core values and principles, the coffee shop has served as a staple for giving back to the community and creating an atmosphere that attracts all types of creatives. The shop has a wall with hundreds of coffees that were purchased by strangers for anyone who may meet the criteria on the cup, whether this requires doing a Michael Jackson dance or being enrolled in one of the local University classes. They even allow local artists to display their work on the shop walls. Every coffee shop should take some notes from Salvador and Chris.
