Today, Bruce and I want to unpack a question we frequently encounter: Is cash value life insurance enough for retirement? It's a compelling question, but one without a simple yes or no answer. The effectiveness of cash value life insurance as your primary retirement vehicle heavily depends on your personal discipline, your overall financial strategy, and, importantly, your understanding of what retirement means to you. https://www.youtube.com/live/rASx9CvIpbg When I started my financial career back in the late 1980s, a presentation caught my attention. It claimed that by consistently funding a whole life insurance policy, individuals could join the "Lucky 3%"—those who felt completely secure about their retirement. This idea was captivating, promising financial freedom through disciplined saving. Yet, over the years, I discovered something crucial: consistency, discipline, and long-term thinking significantly outweigh the choice of any specific financial product. The Retirement Dream vs. RealityIs Cash Value Life Insurance Enough for Retirement?Defining Retirement: What Does It Really Mean? The Importance of Consistent Savings and DisciplineWhole Life vs. VUL and IUL: Stability and GuaranteesThe Myth of "Zero is Your Hero" in Indexed Universal Life (IUL)Cash Value Life Insurance as Part of a Comprehensive Retirement PlanThe Infinite Banking AdvantageCan You Rely Solely on Cash Value Life Insurance?Book A Strategy Call The Retirement Dream vs. Reality By the end of this article, you will clearly understand whether cash value life insurance—such as whole life, variable universal life (VUL), or indexed universal life (IUL)—can sufficiently fund your retirement. We'll explore the advantages and drawbacks of using life insurance as your main retirement tool, emphasize the critical importance of consistent saving, and outline how to effectively integrate life insurance into a comprehensive retirement plan for optimal security and growth. Furthermore, you'll understand why no single financial instrument is perfect for everyone, and why a diversified, well-balanced retirement strategy that includes guaranteed income, buffer assets, and growth-oriented investments can lead to lasting financial security and peace of mind. Is Cash Value Life Insurance Enough for Retirement? Defining Retirement: What Does It Really Mean? Many of us grow up envisioning retirement as a milestone where we stop working at age 65 and comfortably live off our accumulated savings. However, this traditional model presents significant challenges. The reality is that you're often expecting 40 years of work to fund potentially 30 or more years of retirement, especially as life expectancy increases. Rather than viewing retirement as an abrupt halt to working life, a more sustainable approach is to see retirement as a transition to financial independence. Instead of merely accumulating savings, focus on acquiring cash-flowing assets, such as rental properties, dividend-producing stocks, or profitable businesses, which can continuously generate income regardless of market fluctuations. The Importance of Consistent Savings and Discipline Bruce emphasizes that consistent saving and disciplined behavior are the foundation of successful retirement planning. Unfortunately, many people fall short in their savings efforts early in life, later attempting to compensate by chasing higher-risk investments for potentially greater returns. This strategy often introduces unnecessary risk precisely when financial security is most critical. Establishing disciplined savings habits early and maintaining them throughout your career is far more important than selecting the "perfect" financial product. Time and consistency enable compound growth, providing greater financial security in your retirement years than riskier, late-stage investments ever could. This podcast explains Hero's Journey. Hero's Journey was first discovered by Joseph Campbell. It is the underlying process of self-transformation. Your life is a hero's journey of self-transformation. You experience hero's journey every time you find courage to bring positive changes to your life. Your Hero's Journey begins when you choose to honor your inner callings, even if that means letting go of the safety and predictability of your familiar life. This leads to small and major self-transformation.You transform through your life experiences every day. But, the depth and quality of your self-transformation depends on the depth and quality of your life experiences. When you invite deeper and more meaningful life experiences, your personal transformation, resulting from those experiences, is also deeper and more meaningful. In contrast, when your life becomes habitual and centered around safety and pursuit of comfort and pleasure, you don't grow or transform in a meaningful way. This podcast explains what Hero's Journey is, and why it is the archetype behind all your personal transformations. We also cover various stages of Hero's Journey and self-transformation. You must know these stages, so you can notice and navigate them easier. More specifically, this podcast covers the following topics:- What is Hero's Journey? - Hero's Journey as the Archetype of Transformation- Understanding the Stages of Hero's Journey- And, Inner Work as the ultimate Hero's Journey This podcast is produced by Aion Farvahar, who is a Life and Spirituality Mentor, and a Psychoshamanic and IFS Self-Leadership Practitioner. Welcome to another strategy episode of the "Personal Mastery Training" podcast with your host, Alvin Brown. In this session, titled "Your Hero's Journey: The Secret Blueprint for Personal Mastery," we delve into Joseph Campbell's concept of the hero's journey, exploring its application in our pursuit of mastery and greatness. Key Highlights (Bullet Points): The Ordinary World: We start in a realm of routine and comfort, often constrained by limiting beliefs and societal norms that push us towards mediocrity. Call to Adventure: A longing for something more, a call to venture beyond the ordinary, leading to a pivotal decision. Refusal and Mentorship: Some resist the call due to risks, while others seek mentors or guidance to propel them forward. Threshold into the Special World: Crossing over into a realm where dreams are pursued and courage is celebrated, distinguishing individuals who chase their aspirations. Tests, Allies, and Enemies: Trials challenge determination while allies and adversaries play crucial roles in the journey to greatness. Ordeal and Death: Confronting inner limitations, shedding old habits, and embracing transformation as the old self dies to give birth to a stronger, evolved version. The Reward: Attaining the sought-after goal, reaping the rewards, accolades, and the sense of accomplishment for persevering. The Return and Sharing the Elixir: Returning to the ordinary world, equipped with newfound wisdom, aiming to inspire and assist others on their journeys. As we conclude this episode, remember that the journey to mastery requires sacrifice, growth, and a willingness to evolve. Embrace change, seek guidance, face challenges, and never shy away from the pursuit of greatness. Join us next time as we navigate your mastery journey and assess where you stand in your path. Keep going, keep growing, and remember, you're closer to success than you think. Peace and love on your journey. But the narrator for the audiobook, My Mess is a Bit of a Life, was Katherine Parkinson--which was the medical receptionist in Doc Martin. GREAT voice. I wanted to announce that my friend, colleague, and mentor, J Thorn, just launched his new book, Writing Scenes. I'm especially excited about this because I contributed to the making of this book in several ways, and I feel quite proud of all I did. One of the example scenes in the book is one I submitted from my current work in progress (my memoir). I narrated that scene (in the Before and After example) in the audiobook. (Audiobook is coming soon. Just waiting on Audible to approve it.) And I edited the book for J. It would tickle me if you picked up the book for yourself. Howdy, you BEAUTIFUL SOUL!!!Two ChipChat Episodes in one week?!!Yes, I promised that--and I delivered that to you.My friend, today we're talking all about the concept of The Hero's Journey and specifically YOUR Hero's Journey. It's a concept coined by a magnificent human being named Joseph Campbell, and it's the story thread that runs through all great tales of humankind. It's the Call to Adventure, the Mentor, the Facing of the Dragon, and the Return with the Treasure. And more importantly than that, it's a way to think of our own lives. Here is an article I wrote all about The Hero's Journey to better understand it. "This Concept Alone Determines a Great Life..." by (ahem) Chip Franks. And HERE is the MOVIE about The Hero's Journey written, directed, and produced by Patrick Solomon...MY FAVORITE MOVIE EVER (often playing on my laptop while I do work on it)...FINDING JOE!In this solo Chip-isode, we talk about how I discovered The Hero's Journey, what it is, a little about my current Hero's Journey and the serendipitous way in how that came about--which involved this very podcast and my conversation with amazing human and billionaire Naveen Jain. What I didn't mention in this podcast is that the school I'm starting, The Imagine Academy was named due to that being Naveen's favorite word, "IMAGINE."There are so many possibilities with that word!It evokes hope, dreams, innovation, ways to make things BETTER for us all. Then we talk about YOU, and YOUR Hero's Journey...which is the most important thing. I'd love for this ChipChat to get you to think of your OWN life and the Hero's Journey that you may be on now--or that you may want to search for.The suggested exercises for this are to:Watch Finding Joe.Read the Article.(optional) Order and listen to "The Power of Myth" by Joseph Campbell and Bill MoyersHere are two questions I'd recommend to help find the Call to Adventure for your own Hero's Journey...write these out in a journal and spend some of the very best time you ever could in thinking about these:1. What did you want to be as a child? There are probably some clues there for your Hero's Journey.and2. What would you do if you had a billion dollars in the bank and didn't need to concern yourself with money?Think about those, and let me know what you're doing with your Hero's Journey! As always, I welcome all feedback at c@chipfranks.comYOU ARE LOVED AND DESERVING!Chip ❤️

Discussed in this episode: What is a hero? Hero (Noun) - a person who exemplifies great courage. (Listen to rest of episode or check Merriam Webster for all the definitions My first hero was my Dad, my second hero was Mark McgWire, my third Hero was Bill Romanowski and guess what they've all let me down at some point or another. Heroes are humans so they have shortcomings, they make mistakes and we can't expect them to be perfect. Which is why..... My hero today is myself but not me NOW but rather the version of myself 10 years from now. I may let him down but I know for certain he will not let me down. That is the hero, the version I will forever be trying to hunt down. Todays Exercise: 1.) Go to a place that you vividly recall BEING at approximately 10 years prior, that you can see yourself coming back to 10 years in the future. 2.) Meditate on your past self 10 years from now, imagine that the current version of you is the hero that the past version from 10 years ago was seeking. 3.) Write a letter of kindness, gratitude, appreciation, respect, forgiveness admiration and truth to that past self from 10 years ago and sign it Your Hero, (your name) 4.) Now in the same location do a similar mediation where you envision your future self 10 years from now. (That is your Hero, that you are hunting down) What has he done, what does he say, what are his thoughts and feelings? 5.) From that higher version of you 10 years in the future write a letter of truth to your current self thanking him for all he did to get you to that future self. Be honest, genuine, kind, understanding and loving in this letter. Sign it your hero (your name) The end. Announcements: - #wondermoreworryless giveaway that Entry Rules: 1.) HE’S THE NEIGHBOR WE’VE BEEN WAITING FOR Our readings are Haggai 1 -2 , Psalm 129, and Luke 10. We are reading from the New Living Translation. Blessed are the eyes that see what you have seen. I tell you, many prophets and kings longed to see what you see, but they didn’t see it. And they longed to hear what you hear, but they didn’t hear it. (Lk10:23-24 NLT) That’s what Jesus says to his disciples. What do you see in this story of the Samaritan? Do you see yourself? A religious leader came to Jesus and asked him, Teacher, what should I do to inherit eternal life? (Lk 10:25 NLT) He asked the question because he wanted to justify himself, we’re told. Jesus responds with this story of the Samaritan. In the story Jesus is asking us, Who do you see? We like to see ourselves as the ones who show mercy – the good Samaritan – the hero. But Jesus wants us to see ourselves as the wounded man and God as the Samaritan. God has shown mercy when we were exposed, beat up and left half-dead along the road. It is God who has showed mercy to us. God is the hero in this story, not us. Jesus is not telling us the story to teach us how to justify ourselves before God. He’s telling the story to tell us what God is like. God is the one who justifies us. God is the one who is the hero. The world and religion pass us by in the end. But God sees us and cares for us. He promises to return for us and restore us to life. Mary gets this. Mary is sitting at his feet and listening to every word of this story, and she gets it. Jesus is the Neighbor that we’ve been waiting for. He’s the only Neighbor the world has ever known. He’s the way in which we find ourselves justified before God – not by the work of our own hands or by being the hero in our own story, but by sitting at his feet and seeing that He has done for us, what we could not do for ourselves. He has shown mercy and care, soothing our wounds with his oil and wine. He’s bandaged us, placed us on his own donkey and taken us to an inn where we could get rest and be cared for. And he continues to care for us, even when we don’t see him there. He’s left resources behind to help us be restored to life in Him. When you ask the question, ‘How do I inherit eternal life’?, who do you see as the hero of your story? Is it you? Or is it the one who is a better neighbor than you? Is it Jesus? He is the hero of the story. Rejoice, that when you were on the side of the road, wounded and in need of rescue, he found you. Your Hero has come.
Kat Tansey began work on the Hero's Journey in 2015 when she came to the realization that she had been writing and teaching about it for all these years, telling stories and creating courses to help people succeed in a variety of Hero's Journeys. But she had not actually taught them about the Hero's Journey itself. Kat saw that this was a bit like the give a man a fish story. She had been giving them a fish instead of teaching them how to fish. It was time to teach them about the Hero's Journey. Kat's first step for this latest version of Awakening Your Hero's Journey has been to make it a guided online course and connect it to a Discussion Center where people can join a group for each stage of the journey and learn from each other's experiences in that stage. Awakening to Your Hero's Journey is now also part of her new, bigger vision, The Resilient Hero Program. Valeria interviews Kat Tansey. Kat is an award-winning author and innovative educator who believes in the power of a well-told tale to teach while it entertains. An inspirational teacher, Kat spent her early career training thousands of people and consulting with over fifty corporations to help them meet the challenges of change. Her first book, written as a novel, was Winning the Change Game. The book reflected on the lessons Kat learned from twenty years in the corporate world as a training and change management consultant, and featured Alexander Hamilton, who was instrumental in the ratification of the U.S. Constitution, as the change guru. Kat's second book, Choosing to Be: Lessons in Living from a Feline Zen Master, is the story of her journey from deep depression to emotional wellness after she was struck down by Chronic Fatigue Syndrome in the early 90's. Choosing to Be has been awarded the Independent Publisher's Bronze Medal, and has been highly praised by people like Thom Hartmann, distinguished radio commentator and lifelong meditator, who said it is one of the best books on meditation he has ever read. The illustrious Findhorn Press in Scotland picked up the rights to Choosing to Be and released a new, 2nd edition in September 2010. Kat spent much of 2009 researching insomnia to resolve her own sleep issues, and then created an ebook titled: Insomnia Relief Recipes to educate people with insomnia issues about the science of sleep and teach them how to become confident sleepers without using drugs. Empowering and promoting women has always been a significant part of Kat's journey, and she focuses that passion toward collecting the wisdom of midlife women. Her weekly talk show, Finding Magic in Midlife, allows her to interview and discuss in-depth, lessons learned from a wide variety of accomplished and well-known midlife women. Kat is building an archive of these interviews and plans to develop a series of programs to pass this wisdom on to current and future generations of women. In early 2010, Kat collaborated with her good friend Dave Carpenter to produce the highly praised e-book, Prospering in 2010. They have also created an exciting subscription series of webinars, Prospering in 2010: Embracing Change to Accelerate Success, which people can join any time during the year. Kat has a BA in English from Mary Washington College in Virginia and an MBA from Pepperdine University in California. She lives in Ojai, California with her partner, Greg, and enjoys taking long walks where she develops dialogues for her next book. You Must Be the Hero of Your Story… “There comes a time when you gotta keep moving.” -Bugzy Malone, Artist I was listening to a song from one of my new favorite artists today (Bugzy Malone) and he said that phrase and it really got me thinking about the struggles and sense of overwhelm that many people are facing right now in their lives. He also went on to say, You Can't Look at a Problem, You Gotta Look Thru the Problem Agree 100%. So what does the really mean and how do you start to look past your problems in order to move forward in your life…but also move forward in a BIG way? Well, I think it means you need to make a decision to Become the Hero of Your Story. You've probably heard this phrase before but it's time you really gave it some serious consideration. What does it mean to Be the Hero of Your Story? What would the hero of your story look like? How would the hero of your story of life act, show up and manage the problems you are facing? The bottom line is, whether you believe it or not, you are the author and the main character in your life's story. And…you have the ability to write the next chapter. Your thoughts, intentions, actions, and strategy will determine the results you will see over the coming months. The Hero of your Story needs to be the one to Show up, Step up and Conquer the fears, challenges and obstacles that life has presented to you. But, here is the catch… You cannot pretend to be the Hero. You must actually Decide and Act like the Hero. The Key is to remember that even Heros have setbacks. Even Heros can have a comeback. In order to become the Hero that you were meant to be, you need to adopt values, disciplines and actions that Your Hero would adopt. Let me suggest just a few… Keep Your Eye on the Mission This is your vision. If you are looking at the problem you will not be able to find the solution. If your head is down, you can't see where you are going. Keep your head up, and stay clear on the goals, dreams and desires that you have for your Future. But, this means you need to have a clear vision, so Write it down. Write down what you want your life to be like and get clear on what you will do to make that happen. Most importantly, have a vision so big that is overshadows the problems you are facing. The key to success is not asking for less or smaller problems. The key is asking for enough strength and vision that is bigger than your problems. Then you will develop the skills and talents and experience to handle even greater challenges. Stop Giving Energy and Focus to the Past A True Hero, Your Hero, doesn't stay focused on the past let failures. The past does not define you. It should only Empower you because you are NOT that person any more. You are the new person that has learned from the past. You are the more experienced, the more dedicated, the more driven person that exists in the present. So, like Rocky said, “its not how many times you get knocked down that counts. It's how many times you get knocked down and get back up that defines you”. Be the person (and the hero) that will never quit. The person that doesn't ever stay down. Learn How to Create Momentum Go back and listen to the podcast last week on momentum, but I want to emphasize here that, if you learn to create momentum, you will be UNSTOPPABLE. The Hero of your story is absolutely Unstoppable. You can create momentum for yourself by simply aligning with yoru Unique Talents, Setting Huge goals, Removing Distractions, Finding your sources of Energy, and Leveraging the Power of the Mastermind. With momentum on your side, you can overcome even the biggest challenges, so find ways to create energy and momentum in your life and break through to new heights. Its by operating outside your comfort zone and pushing into the unknown that you will find your greatest joys and rewards. Know the Journey will be Long Listen, you just like any other hero are not perfect. You will fail at times. You will do and say the wrong things at times. You won't have all the answers and things won't always go according to plan. But, trust yourself. Trust your ability to learn and adapt rather than trusting in the outcome. Trust and have faith in the process rather than the end goal. Be a person of decision, commitment and conviction and then trust that you will be taken in the right direction. You see when we let go of the outcome and learn to embrace the journey, we are much better able to handle what the story of life throws in our path. If you are not open to detours and new paths, then you will be focused on the wrong things when the objective is just to create, live and enjoy your life. The journey you begin is based on your current perception of what you want and how you will write the story. But, as you grow, your journey can take on many new and exciting paths to help you become the true Hero and fulfill your destiny. Know that Being Stuck is Temporary Just like a path in the forest or a map you are following for directions, sometimes you will make a wrong turn and get stuck. Sometimes the path you take will lead you in the wrong direction. When that happens, just know that making a course correction is ok and being stuck is only temporary. Getting upset or distracted with being stuck or lost only drains you of the energy you could be using to accomplish your task. Course correct and keep moving forward. Again, Bugzy Malone, “Keep moving, Losing, Keep Moving, Losing…” Even Heros have setback. It's the drive and determination of a Hero that overcomes that battle. Make a decision and a commitment today to Be the Hero. Be the one you are hoping to show up and rescue you. Be the one who will create and manifest your future. Only you can make it happen and only you have the power to Be the Hero of Your Story.

This is a Crabcake from The Maryland Crabs! What is a Crabcake? Well, it's a very short snippet of something you need to know. It might be 5 minutes long..or it might be 20....or longer in this case, because..well...beer! In any event, enjoy your Maryland Crabcake! Today, we continue our monthly series (no set schedule other than monthly) about beer. We have a huge distributer of beer right here in Annapolis--Katcef Brothers Inc. and they have a ton of experts on hand to de-mystify beer for us. Now, full disclosure--I like beer! I like beer a lot! But, I am not a beer snob and a Bud Light will suit me just fine. This month is not so much about beer. Well, OK Budweiser Black Lager, but... it is all about heroes. Once again, Katcef Brothers and the Military Bowl have teamed up and want to know who your hero is so you can have a shot at a VIP experience at the Military Bowl. See below for dates and locations! But we also talk to a real hero today. Rocky Sickmann was a Marine who spent 444 days in captivity in Tehran in the Iranian Hostage Crisis back in 1979. Today, he is retired from a civilian life with Budweiser and spearheads the company's relationship to Folds of Honor which provides scholarships to to the millions of military dependents affected by war.As Rocky says-- Freedom is not free. Rocky will be at the Navy SMU game this Saturday where he along with Katcef Brothers will present a check to Folds of Honor! Please have a listen! The RunRunLive 4.0 Podcast Episode 4-419 – Dawn's Wisdom (Audio: link) audio:http://www.RunRunLive.com/PodcastEpisodes/epi4419.mp3] Link MarathonBQ – How to Qualify for the Boston Marathon in 14 Weeks - Hello and welcome to episode 4-419 of the RunRunLive Podcast. So – I'm a week late with this one, but it's great show. Think about it this way – we gave it an additional week to marinate, to grow, to rise like rustic bread or age like fine wine. Last week I was all lined up to get the show out for Friday. Thursday was my birthday. I took Thursday and Friday off from work to recuperate a bit and was working on the show. Then, ironically as I was writing the hero's journey piece that is in section two, that talks about how life is not a straight line, and it seldom goes as you expect it to, my old computer ceased to turn on. I've had this Microsoft surface since at least 2015 and it's been the best computer I ever. It was powerful enough to do all the audio editing for the show, it has a great form factor for traveling. Just a great machine that matches my need. End of this story is that I spent all day Friday in the Microsoft store and ended up buying a new surface that I am happily tapping away on now. I didn't loose any data, just some time – and oh by the way – I'm about $2,000 lighter so you might want to consider becoming a member of the RunRunLive Podcast to help defray unexpected expenses. So with that excuse out of the way let me take you back to the primordial jungles of North America where strange and dangerous beasts roam dark, dank forests…. (Fade in Jungle music) Our old friend Peter Herridge everyone with that excellent dramatic reading. That piece of writing has been kicking around in my head or a few years. Probably since I first heard the word ‘piriformis' and thought, that sounds like the name of a nasty dinosaur. I immediately thought of Peter who has such a great voice. Peter was a good runner in his day and one of the original podcasters from a decade ago when we all got online and met each other. Peter does a podcast every once in a while called ‘spikes'. Today we have a really good, timely chat with Dawn. I have been following Dawn for a few years but never had her on the show. She is a heavy social media poster and for some reason I see her posts on LinkedIn a lot. I have always treated LinkedIn as a professional network and haven't let this ‘hobby' side of my life bleed over into it. She stands out, because you've got all these businesspeople talking about business stuff and then there's Dawn talking about empowerment and Joy. This time of year, in the northern hemisphere anyhow, we all get stressed out. The weather turns. The days get shorter. If you have kids their schedule ramps up. It's budget-setting time and trade show season at your work. The end of the year is approaching with holidays and deadlines and sales quotas. It tends to push people into anxiety and depression. I was there myself this month. With my work having challenges, me getting older and an unruly puppy to train. Things just felt awful and closed in and trapped. My mind started repeating a scarcity narrative of how much I don't have and how much I've lost. Which, I know is ridiculous, because I'm one of the most blessed and lucky people you'll ever meet, but that's how your brain works, especially this time of year. Then I stumbled across one of Dawn's posts talking about gratitude and abundance. By the way, one of the symptoms of this downward-spiraling mental malaise is you start trying to distract yourself online. Whether it's FB scrolling or too much news or video games. That's a bad way to avoid life. Anyhow, I took a deep breath and declared November a month of gratitude. In section one I'm going to suggest two useful ways you can use your off-season training to learn some new skills and add to your running assets. In section two we are going to take the hero's journey together. Because one of the most effective way to contextualize your experience in this world is to see it as a journey. Tell your narrative as a journey. And that is what we are going to talk about today. Gratitude and journeys. Because, my friends, no matter how low or shitty it gets the hero in you always knows the way. Without the shitty parts there can be no hero. I saw a great post this week that said ‘failure is like stepping in manure, it stinks when you do it but it makes for great fertilizer!” On with the show. … I'll remind you that the RunRunLive podcast is ad free and listener supported. What does that mean? It means you don't have to listen to me trying to sound sincere about Stamps.com or Audible.. (although, fyi, my MarathonBQ book is on audible) We do have a membership option where you can become a member and as a special thank you, you will get access to member's only audio. There are book reviews, odd philosophical thoughts, zombie stories and I curate old episodes for you to listen to. Section two – Your Hero's Journey– Outro Well, my friends, you have Made it with gratitude to the end of the RunRunLive Podcast episode 4-419. Okey – Dokey – I'm in a down phase in my training. Which is another, kinder way of saying I'm not training much. Much for me that is. I'm just doing 3 days a week in the trails with Ollie the Collie and then a longer run with the boys on Sundays – somewhere in the 20-30 miles a week. I've fattened myself back up with some poor nutritional choices as well, but I think we need to take these breaks to rebalance the humors every once in a while. I know discipline is power but that can burn you out and I've got a lot going on right now. I'm noticing that I'm starting to get the bug again to do something epic. Got any suggestions? I'm not sure if I'll get into Boston this year. If I don't that opens up the spring for something. Coming up is our traditional Thanksgiving 5k. But, Teresa hurt her foot, so I'm going to walk it with her. Maybe we'll start early and take the dog. After that the first week of December is the Mill Cities Relay. I was running with my buddies Brian and Frank and we came up with a the bright idea of entering our own team. You only need 5 people and we already had 3 so how hard could it be? As I started reaching out to some of our old running friends, (in our age group), I found that many of them were no longer running at all due to age-related injuries. In a weird Schadenfreude way they made me feel pretty good about the fact that I'm still getting out there. It also reminded me to be kinder to myself. Finally, I am planning to run the Groton Marathon, and organize it, for the 7th edition on December 29th this year – please come up and run with us. It's fun. What about Ollie the collie? We were asked not to come back to puppy training. It started as we were sitting patiently, waiting for class to start. Ollie the border collie puppy and myself in the big box pet store. It was our 3rd class. Ollie was doing well, learning quickly. The dopey brown doodle came in with it's handler all stupid and goofy, doh do doh. The dopy doodle's exuberance overruled the owners' ability to control it and it pulled its way over into our space to check out Ollie. Ollie was not happy about this. He turned to look at me and said “Dad, what is this madness? These doodles and snoodles and snickerdoodle caboodles? What right do they have to play with the canine DNA of pure breeds for their own amusement? These freaks! These aberrations! This cannot stand! I draw the line here! I must stop this madness! Foul abomination I strike at thee! I will blot your aberration from this world!” At least that's what I thought he said, because it was at this point he went berserk and tried to murder the doodle. But, since I was holding him by the collar he turned and sunk his teeth into my hand. As I was bleeding and shaking with fear, that's when the nice lady said maybe we should leave and not come back. On the one hand Ollie is mental and that has its challenges. But, on the other hand, I'm kinda jealous because that's exactly the kind of punk-rock, hard core mental many of us tried to be as teenagers! He's just coming up on 6 months old and he's already 31 pounds of muscular athlete with a big brain to boot. He's running 20 – 30 miles with me off leash in the woods each week and he's scary fast and strong. He's not much on cuddling, but as they say, he's someone you'd want to share a fox-hole with. I just have to train him up. He's going to be a great dog. And remember, as Ollie says, Death to Doodles! I will see you out there. We were asked not to come back to puppy training. It started as we were sitting patiently, waiting for class to start. Ollie the border collie puppy and myself in the big box pet store. It was our 3rd class. Ollie was doing well, learning quickly. The dopey brown doodle came in with it’s handler all stupid and goofy, doh do doh. The dopy doodle’s exuberance overruled the owners’ ability to control it and it pulled its way over into our space to check out Ollie. I will blot your aberration from this world!” At least that’s what I thought he said, because it was at this point he went berserk and tried to murder the doodle. But, since I was holding him by the collar he turned and sunk his teeth into my hand. As I was bleeding and shaking with fear, that’s when the nice lady said maybe we should leave and not come back. On the one hand Ollie is mental and that has its challenges. But, on the other hand, I’m kinda jealous because that’s exactly the kind of punk-rock, hard core mental many of us tried to be as teenagers! He’s just coming up on 6 months old and he’s already 31 pounds of muscular athlete with a big brain to boot. He’s running 20 – 30 miles with me off leash in the woods each week and he’s scary fast and strong. He’s not much on cuddling, but as they say, he’s someone you’d want to share a fox-hole with. I just have to train him up. He’s going to be a great dog. And remember, as Ollie says, Death to Doodles! I will see you out there. (e107) Are You Ever Unrecognizable, Who is Your Hero by Paul George
Let's talk about the Hero's journey. Remember the movie Ratatouille? It's the perfect example of the classic Hero's journey. The rat Remy dreams of becoming a great chef, Despite being a rat. He follows his dream with the help of the garbage boy Linguini and he puts his culinary skills to test. Despite all the obstacles, he becomes this major chief who wins over the food critics and proves his culinary abilities with this simple dish. Long story short is anyone can do anything they set their minds to. We are all wired to respond to stories. The story structure begins with the context where you set the stage. Your Hero is in a world and there is a conflict that sets them on a journey. The hero is in their world and figures out there is a wrong within the world. An example is they don't like the flavor or maybe the color of something. Now, you have to find that resolution. Stop thinking of them as customers, start thinking of them as Heroes and you're helping them complete their journey. You serve as many heroes as possible and then they can't resist coming to you. Find out what they want and get it for them. Remember they are the Hero, not the Customer, and not the Client. Do you want to buckle down and figure out who your Hero is? Who is Your Hero? Hannah's Hero 1 Samuel 2:1-2 Hannah had prayed with a bitter heart. Now her heart expresses joy. Joy is lasting but happiness is fleeting. Hannah’s joy comes from her position “in the Lord.” “My horn” is in reference to power. Hannah’s power comes from her position “in the Lord.” The greatest power over people is sin. But those that are in Christ have power over sin. Romans 6:5-14 She can smile at her enemies because the Lord has saved her. Nothing and no one can take that from her. Romans 8:31-39 God is Unique 1 Samuel 2:3-8 If it is unfit for others to hear it is unfit to say. Everything you do and say must be done knowing that the Lord is the God of knowledge. God is the hero of those who need heroes. See also Matthew 5:3-6 and James 4:6 Christ is Empowered 1 Samuel 2:9-10 How the Lord blessed Hannah: The Lord gave Hannah the power to go home without Samuel. 1 Samuel 2:11. The Lord gave her an opportunity to visit her son on a regular basis. 1 Samuel 2:18-20 The Lord blessed Hannah with more children. 1 Samuel 2:21 The Lord allowed Hannah to see her son grow in God. 1 Samuel 2:21 The Lord gave Hannah a prophecy that is the first utterance. 1 Samuel 2:10. Your Hero, Too Is it happiness or joy that fills your heart? What has power over you? People? Emotions? A situation? Have you trusted in the Lord’s salvation or on in your own strength?
