After losing a loved one, we often wonder if we will ever find any joy in living again. Here are 7 ways that you can start making your way back to happiness after the loss of a loved one: Journal your feelings without holding back. Allow yourself to vent every thought, feeling and emotion regardless of how “good or bad” they seem. You can even come up with a "Joy List," and pick one thing to add to your world each week. Find a support group, therapist, healer, or even a bereavement group. Give yourself permission to take “as long as it takes” to recover. There is no timeline with grief, and it's different for everyone. Help someone in need or even volunteer your time. Take care of your body, mind and spirit. Try getting regular massages, meditate, take long walks, listening to music, and sleeping in. Create new traditions for the holidays and special events. Talk about your loved one with friends and family. Ask them to share their favorite memories of your loved one with you. Hello! I'm Tommy Forsyth, and I'm passionate about breathwork and nervous system health. My world turned upside down when my father had a heart attack in May of 2017. We spent five days fighting, praying, and hoping he would make a miraculous recovery, but it never came. My family and I said goodbye to him on May 22nd. The unexpected submersion into grief was by far the most difficult time of my life. Common thoughts included: Why are people saying “it never gets better”?! How am I ever supposed to function again? My life is over, right? During that time, I understood more of myself, I understood more of the world of grief, and I realized that there is a need for a greater understanding of loss for everyone. *Enter awkward stories of people who had no idea what to do or say around me after his death.* The best grief advice I ever got was “Face it now. Don't wait til later.” And that's just what I did. I found a great therapist who I saw weekly (though the first few sessions were just sobs), a psychiatrist who helped me appropriately medicate, and I started journaling about my grief. I know those few sentences make it seem so short and sweet– but it wasn't. It was a lot of work. But I can confidently say I'm in the place where I am today because of the work I put in on myself. I went to a storytelling competition in July of 2017… and WON! It was the first time I felt blood pumping through my veins again. I tried to figure out how to recapture that feeling and turned to podcasting. I knew nothing about the craft at the time, other than a microphone was involved and that I was comfortable in front of one. I also wanted to create a store for modern sympathy gifts. After lots of late nights and Google rabbit holes, I eventually created the So Sorry For Your Loss podcast and blog and opened an ecommerce store called All The Skies. I created The Understanding Heart, a blog and Instagram account to help give women and families who have experienced pregnancy loss a space to grieve and share their stories. I had a miscarriage in early 2020 at 10 weeks and 5 days. It was my first pregnancy and we named him Anthony. As if the experience of losing our first pregnancy wasn't enough, what we experienced after our loss was why I created this space. I realized there was no one to support the families through this experience. The miscommunication and heartache we experienced even after we were told there was no heartbeat still haunts me to this day.  It's my hope that we can continue to speak about these babies that didn't make it earth-side to amplify the experiences of families experiencing pregnancy loss so they know they are not alone.  Connect with Brittany... Brian D. Smith is a certified life coach, a grief partner, and a small business consultant. He became what he calls “well acquainted with grief” in 2015, after the sudden passing of his younger daughter, fifteen-year-old Shayna. He wanted to stop living, but he had to learn to survive for the sake of his wife and their older daughter. Out of necessity, Brian dove deep into studying the nature of life, death, and how to survive grief, and now he uses all that he has learned to help others. Brian is the author of “Grief 2 Growth: Planted. Not Buried.” Its subtitle is “How to Survive and Thrive After Life's Greatest Challenges.” He is also the host of the Grief 2 Growth podcast.    I provide a safe space where you can safely share what you are experiencing. I share techniques that I discovered and developed after my devastating loss. Award-winning investigative reporter and broadcast journalist, Angela Kennecke, has spent three decades keeping people informed on the evening news. Her investigative reports have resulted in changes to laws. She was named a 2021inductee to the South Dakota Hall of Fame. In recent years, many of Angela's stories focused on the growing opioid crisis. On the day her 21-year-old daughter, Emily, died of an overdose, Angela was working on a story on Good Samaritan Laws and overdose deaths.  Emily died of fentanyl poisoning. Angela has taken Emily's story nationwide and even internationally. Angela speaks tirelessly about the issues surrounding opioid addiction, a parent's frustration and sense of helplessness and tells it all from the perspective of a mother who has lost her child. Angela started a charity called “Emily's Hope,” because she never gave up hope on her daughter and now wants to offer hope to other families struggling with addiction. Angela believes when tragedy and setbacks strike the only thing you have control over is your response. Diane Morgan is a Mindset and Grief Recovery Coach and Hypnotist. She provides both online and 1-to-1 in- person Grief Recovery support services. I have had many years of experience helping people while working in the healing arts field.  Over the years I recognized that on a daily basis, most of my clients shared their stories of loss. It was after completing the Grief Recovery Program I realized that many of them didn't have the tools or relief I experienced after the completion of the program. I also came to realize that after many personal losses of my own, I had been carrying around so much unresolved grief. After experiencing the loss of three miscarriages, moving to another country, losing numerous beloved pets, and finally all within eight months of each other I lost my dad, mum and my brother.  Even though I have a loving family, I felt lost alone and overwhelmed. I buried my grief because I told myself “I had to stay strong for my children.”  It was only after doing the Grief Recovery Program that I was able to shine a light at my darkest feelings of grief, I was able to release those heavy emotions that I had carried with me for many years. It is my honor to help individuals process their loss and find freedom from their grief. So that they can love themselves, feel confident, and make room for joy and purpose to come back into their lives. It can be difficult to know what to say when someone has lost a child. It's often easy to believe that our words are more likely to offend than comfort, to make a situation worse rather than better. We may not know what to say, but also know that the worst thing is to say nothing at all. I recently asked the grieving mothers I have the honor to work with, if there are things people said to them that helped with their loss. that perhaps encouraged them or gave them hope during their time of deep sadness.
