On this episode of The Power of Love Show we welcome special guest, Brian D. Smith. Brian holds many titles including, but not limited to, LIFE COACH, GRIEF PARTNER, AUTHOR & PODCAST HOST. Brian's life journey has given him a unique perspective on the human experience — with an appreciation for both the joys and the sorrows he's encountered along the way. With his wife of 30 years, he raised two beautiful, competent, compassionate and independent daughters. In June of 2015, however, his youngest daughter, Shayna, suddenly and unexpectedly passed from this life into the next life at the tender age of 15. With Shayna's passing, Brian experienced the most profound loss anyone can suffer. He had to learn to survive his grief for the sake of his wife and his oldest daughter. Having been deeply scarred by toxic religion as a young man, Brian had instilled in him an intense fear of death… a fear that he would have to learn to overcome with a lifelong spiritual quest. After Shayna's transition, his spiritual quest intensified, prompted by the extraordinary visions and messages he received from her after her death. As a result of those experiences, he immersed myself in researching concepts of the afterlife, taking a scientific, as well as a spiritual and philosophical approach to it. With his life coaching & grief work, Brian's mission is to help people rediscover WHO they are and WHY they are here. In those two questions lie the secrets to not only surviving this life, but thriving. Brian believes that if you're feeling “stuck”, it's most likely because you have forgotten the answer to one or both of these questions. Brian's vision is to create a world where everyone has a sense of purpose and fulfillment. If we know the “why”, we can endure any “how”. He wants to remind everyone of their true nature and their reason for being. He has studied the nature of life and death and how to progress through grief of all kinds from a job loss to divorce to illness and the death of a loved one. Brian speaks from experience on all of the above examples of grief. As a grief guide, Brian aims to provide a safe space where you can safely share what you are experiencing. He shares techniques that he discovered and developed after his devastating loss and, perhaps most importantly, he helps his clients understand that death is not goodbye and that your relationship with your loved one can continue. He believes that any ending is a new beginning. Shortly after Shayna transitioned, Brian discovered Helping Parents Heal, a non-profit peer-to-peer support group for parents of children who have passed. He volunteers with Helping Parents Heal and is a member of their Board of Directors. He has worked with hundreds of parents who have lost children. Brian is the author of “Grief 2 Growth: Planted. This week we speak to Brian D Smith, professor and author of a brand new book New Drugs, Fair Prices. In the book and on the show Brian suggests that we can have our cake and eat it too - meaning that we can have fair drug prices, yet still encourage pharmaceutical innovation. Brian talks us through what it means to apply a generalised Darwinian approach to the life sciences ecosystem and how considering the complex adaptive ecosystem as a whole opens up new perspectives to solving the polarising debate about drug prices on one hand and encouraging innovation on the other. Applying this theoretical perspective ends up with some very practical solutions to some of the ailments of our industry. Getting to the solutions, we travel through some of the habitats of the ecosystem to discover the challenges the industry faces. We dive deeper into the discovery habitat. The purpose of this habitat is about creating new knowledge. This is often done in universities and publicly funded labs. Predictivity is one of the challenges in this industry - meaning that it is not directly transferable to actual medicine. Understanding translational science better will help us ensure a better conversion rate between discovery and actual drugs. You do not solve problems in a complex adaptive ecosystem with just one solution. Like removing one weed in your garden will not create a flowerbed. You need to apply a range of solutions and react to how the ecosystem reacts. In the book, Brian suggests 27 solutions to the problems in our ecosystem - and all are interconnected. These solutions are societal projects - not just government projects or industry projects. Revisit Episode 8 of Season 1 where Brian first guested us: https://transformationintrials.buzzsprout.com/1906263/10832267-brian-d-smith-changing-your-dna-to-pursue-a-novel-business-model Guest:Brian D Smith: https://www.linkedin.com/in/drbriandsmith/  Who is Professor Brian D Smith video: https://youtu.be/35HFWM6tbTcPragmedic website https://www.pragmedic.com/  Brian's email for sample chapter or other questions:  brian.smith@pragmedic.com  Book: New Drugs, Fair PricesBook trailer video: https://youtu.be/aozQuvjMRCwPublisher's website with discounted book: https://www.routledge.com/New-Drugs-Fair-Prices-Managing-the-Pharmaceutical-Innovation-Ecosystem/Smith/p/book/9781032361055

Could a chimpanzee become a business school professor? He could, if you changed his DNA. In this episode we talk about how to change the DNA of the organization to pursue a new business model - and why that is such a hard thing to do.  In this episode we speak to a true industry expert and expert on the industry. Starting as a lab chemist in 1978 and spending 15 years in marketing and strategy and now a practicing academic, Brain D Smith is considered The World's Leading Authority on the Evolution of the Pharma and Medtech Industry.  In this episode we take an evolutionary view and examine why the industry has such a hard time changing - but also about how much has changed already. We now speak about oncology and no longer refer to specific organ cancers as separate diseases. We no longer measure value solely in the superior efficacy to comparator drugs, but health economic value in general. We talk about speciation of the business models in pharma - how we have gone from having one predominant model when most drugs were based on small molecules, to now having 26 distinct business models. This creates an urgency for pharmaceutical companies to select a strategy pursuing one of these models - and change the business accordingly. This might have something to do with discrimination in what science is important in the industry. Whereas natural sciences are highly valued - management science is sometimes treated as something to pick up via osmosis. “It is difficult to be excellent at something when you do not have a common vocabulary” - Brian D SmithGuest NotesGuest Professor Brian D Smith: https://www.linkedin.com/in/drbriandsmith/ and his practice Pragmedic: http://www.pragmedic.com/ Reach out on Twitter: https://twitter.com/profbriandsmith or directly to brian.smith@pragmedic.com BooksAmazon author page with details of all 8 books Upcoming book ready for pre-order: New Drugs, Fair Prices: Managing the Pharmaceutical Innovation Ecosystem for Sustainable and Affordable New MedicinesArticles for downloadBuilding the futureBack to the futureSelection pressuresChoosing destiny  Explosive evolutionAbbreviations & definitions: Complicated domain: https://thecynefin.co/about-us/about-cynefin-framework/

Harry talks about his life story which includes his early education at Lady Paw Tun kindergarten before going on to Methodist English High School (also Daw Aung San Suu Kyi's school).  On graduating, as schools and universities were closed after the 1962 coup by General Ne Win, he applied for and won a scholarship to attend Lomonosov Moscow State University and graduated with a Master in Political Economy.  He spent from 1963 to 1968 in Moscow and describes his experiences there.  On return to Rangoon he joined the Burma Socialist Programme Party, the sole political party at that time and worked there for 20 years until the party was disbanded after the 1988 unrest. During that time he performed many roles, ending as Chief of Staff of the International Affairs and Foreign Relations Affairs Committee.  Following this, until he left for Australia in 2009 he worked as a private tuition teacher, started a travel agency (Swiftwinds) and was a founder and General Secretary of the Union of Myanmar Travel Association.Harry has a keen interest in the history of Yangon and talks about the popularity of horse racing and the Rangoon Turf Club until racing was banned by General Ne Win in 1963 and also discusses the unsafe security situation in Rangoon immediately following independence in 1948.Harry has also been closely involved with Dr Brian Smith in the study of cooperative fishing by fishermen north of Mandalay where they work with Irrawaddy dolphins - https://global.wcs.org/Resources/Publications/Publications-Search-II/ctl/view/mid/13340/pubid/PUB22844.aspx. Benjamin Franklin once said, "By failing to plan, you're planning to fail." Hi, I'm Brian Smith, a partner in the trust and estates practice at Moore Ingram Johnson and Steele. I started at the firm in 1996 as a summer associate. I came back full-time in 1997 and I've been here ever since. I can't imagine working anywhere else. In my practice, I cover will preparation, estate and gift tax planning, estate administration, probate litigation and guardianships and conservatorships for incapacitated adults and children. A trust and estates practice is unique, because with the exception of a state litigation, there's usually not an adverse party. In the planning process, I help families plan and implement techniques to efficiently and responsively transfer wealth during life or in death. In the administration process, I typically find myself meeting with families at a very difficult time. My role in that process is to be a calming voice and help guide them through the dark times that they're experiencing. At Moore Ingram Johnson and Steele, I'm able to help a very broad cross-section of society, while I enjoy working with high net worth clients and helping them solve federal estate and gift tax problems, I also enjoy tackling the real world problems that every family encounters. By not limiting my practice to one specific demographic, I'm able to help a broad cross-section of society and I find that very rewarding. This is not something that's limited to my practice but something that can be found throughout our firm. When John Moore started our firm back in the 1980s, it was his vision to bring downtown legal expertise to the suburbs. Whether it's estate planning, corporate litigation or real estate, we're not only available to help clients of all shapes or sizes but we're able to provide them with the specialized and expert legal expertise that they would find at a big downtown firm. A large part of my practice involves education. I know that I'm not always going to be there to walk my clients through every situation that arises. So I spend a great deal of time educating my clients on the ins and outs of their planning. I make sure that the client understands and appreciates the importance of each and every paragraph in their documents and understands how future decisions or events may affect their planning. I also spend a lot of time educating civic groups and other organizations on a estate planning related topics. While these events can be a great way to generate new business, it's the satisfying feeling I get when someone says, "Thank you. I really learned a lot today," that keeps me going. Having two teenage sons, I often find that their passions become my passions. So if I'm not in the office, you can usually find me in a sports arena, concert hall or a school theater. At Moore Ingram Johnson and Steele, we believe in relationships. I'd like to develop a relationship with all of my clients. If I can ever be of service to you, please feel free to call.
