Can success run in a family? For serial entrepreneur Naveen Jain, the answer is clearly yes. This week's guests on Leadership Next are Jain and his son, fellow entrepreneur Ankur Jain. Naveen Jain made a name for himself in the 1990s as the founder of InfoSpace. These days he's hard at work on other endeavors, including his personalized medicine company Viome. Meanwhile Ankur, whose earlier company Humin was acquired by Tinder a few years ago, is already on to his next endeavor, a platform called Bilt Rewards, which allows users to pay their rent online, and helps them earn rewards by doing so. Diane and Kristin speak to Naveen and Ankur about the differences in their leadership styles, how Naveen put entrepreneurship front and center for his children, and innovation driven by AI. Leadership Next is powered by Deloitte.

Welcome back to Making Bank! Today's episode we have Naveen Jain, who is a visionary entrepreneur and philanthropist, dedicated to addressing the world's most pressing challenges through innovation. He has founded several successful companies, including Moon Express, BlueDot, Viome, TalentWise, and InfoSpace, each reflecting his commitment to transformative solutions. (3:40) Being An Entrepreneur Many people believe that being an entrepreneur means starting a company. However, true entrepreneurs are problem solvers. There are three types of people: those who identify problems, those who complain about them, and those who are smart enough to find solutions. (6:05) Selling Your Vision When you begin with a clear belief or vision, focus on your audacious goal—the big problem you're trying to solve. If people believe in you and your vision, they'll be eager to support and invest in everything you offer. (13:10) Achieving Big Goals When you set a big, audacious goal, break it down into the smallest actionable steps. Each step you take should move you closer to that goal. You can't achieve the big picture all at once, so focus on executing one slice at a time. By the time you're finished, you'll have completed the entire journey. (17:42) Microbiome Your gut microbiome produces essential nutrients your body needs, like short-chain fatty acids. To maintain this balance, you must feed your microbiome the right foods. Personalized nutrition is key, as our unique microbiomes require specific diets for optimal health. (30:47) Raising Kids Make sure your kids know your love is unconditional, but your approval must be earned. Teach them that true self-worth comes from creating, not just owning. Wealth doesn't define value—contribution does. (39:52) Mindset As an entrepreneur, focus on addressing root causes and creating abundance. While sustainability often gets equated with conservation—using less to save more—the real path to success is about generating more, not just cutting back. To achieve true sustainability, focus on creating more of everything, rather than merely conserving. (48:56) Intellectual Curiosity Intellectual curiosity is crucial; if you're not learning every day, you risk becoming obsolete. Stopping your pursuit of knowledge equates to stagnation. To stay vibrant and relevant, continually seek new learning opportunities. Tags: Instagram: Naveen Jain @naveenjainceo

Joni Hanson Davis is the female founder of Kirkland, Washington Femtech company Beli, modernizing reproductive, prenatal, and fertility health based on the latest nutritional science with one small, yet significant act of a daily prenatal vitamin for both men and women. After a long successful career leading Fortune 500 companies and technology startups to IPO, Davis founded Beli in 2018 with a personal mission to address the growing crisis of infertility and modernize the stagnant prenatal vitamin market. The fertility market is a $24B market, and yet prenatal vitamins still haven't caught up with modern nutritional science. 50% of all infertility can be traced to male infertility and nutrition plays a major role in successful pregnancy outcomes and science led Beli to look deeper at how nutrition plays a vital role in sperm health, launching the first modern male prenatal in 2019. Today, thousands of men across the country are using Beli and the company has built a following of loyal customers including heavy-hitter celebrity customers. The success of the men's prenatal vitamin led Beli to launch an exclusive women's prenatal in 2021 based on the latest folate and choline research to address both male and female fertility nutrition together. Beli has grown organically to become a profitable company with a multi-million dollar run rate with a small investment from strategic angel investors in the direct to consumer space in less than two years. Many women experience it during their pregnancies . . . it's pregnancy cravings. Over the years, I've heard from hundreds of my clients about their pregnancy cravings. I've had women tell me they craved fruit, a particular flavor of ice cream, cheese, protein, french fries, and even some strange pregnancy cravings. We wanted to learn more about what causes these pregnancy cravings and why they can be so different from woman to woman and from pregnancy to pregnancy. Joni Davis is joining us today to help us learn more about this topic and discuss the importance of health before, during, and after pregnancy. Who is Joni Davis? Joni Hanson Davis is the female founder of Kirkland, Washington Femtech company Beli, modernizing reproductive, prenatal, and fertility health based on the latest nutritional science with one small yet significant act of a daily prenatal vitamin for both men and women. Prior to Beli, Davis held executive positions with Microsoft, InfoSpace, and Tableau Software. What Did We Discuss? In this episode, we chat with Joni about pregnancy cravings, controlling them, and what nutrients are needed for you and your growing baby. Here are several of the questions that we covered: What nutrients are essential for women during the prenatal period? What are the best sources of these essential nutrients? Many women experience pregnancy cravings at some point in their pregnancy. Is there any science behind these cravings? Pregnancy cravings may often be for foods not traditionally considered "healthy." Is it okay for women to indulge in these cravings? What do you suggest for women to help curb their cravings? Do you have any favorite "treats" that are also nutritional for pregnant women? What is your top tip for moms during the prenatal phase? In episode #239 of The Hormone P.U.Z.Z.L.E Podcast, our guest Joni Davis talks about Prenatal Vitamins with Beli. More about Joni: Joni Hanson Davis is the female founder of Kirkland, Washington Femtech company Beli, modernizing reproductive, prenatal, and fertility health based on the latest nutritional science with one small, yet significant act of a daily prenatal vitamin for both men and women. Beli has grown organically to become a profitable company with a multi-million dollar run rate with a small investment from strategic angel investors in the direct-to-consumer space in less than two years. Beli will be raising a Series A round this summer to further accelerate its strong growth. Prior to Beli, Davis held executive positions with Microsoft, InfoSpace, and Tableau Software. The Lesson: How can we ensure that we get the most out of education? What will be the future of primary healthcare? What is the most logical way of looking at failure, disappointment, or disaster? How can we reverse our biological age? Serial entrepreneur Naveen Jain gives his perspective on how to plan and execute a more harmonious future. Notable Excerpt: "We are thinking backward as we're educating our children. This idea that you develop one skill and you stay in your lane has to go away, because the whole education system was designed for the industrial era, where you learned to do machining and could work for the rest of your life. As we are living in this society today where the technologies are becoming obsolete by the time you even graduate, you have to learn to learn, you have to create children that are constantly learning." The Guest: Naveen Jain became an entrepreneur and philanthropist after leaving the higher echelons of Microsoft. He founded InfoSpace, Intelius, TalentWise, and Bluedot. Today, Jain is an executive and co-founder of Viome, a gut microbiome testing service. He's also involved in Moon Express, a company aiming at lunar mining for elements like cobalt, niobium, and others. The Podcast: Livin' Good Currency explores the relationship of time to our lives. It gives a simple, straight-forward formula that anyone can use to be present in the moment—and features a co-host who knows better than anyone the value of time (see below). How do you want to spend your life? This hour can inspire you, along with upcoming guests, to be sure you are ‘Livin' Good Currency' and never get caught running out of time. I had the pleasure of speaking with Naveen K. Jain, who is an Indian-American business executive, entrepreneur, and the founder and former CEO of InfoSpace. We had an amazing conversation about dreaming big and going after that dream no matter how crazy it may seem. So many people, especially young people, are afraid of failing, but failing is just part of the process and is just part of finding that one way that does work. Naveen tells me all about the amazing things he’s been doing in the business world and how he’s influencing the innovations in health and many other areas of people’s lives. “Your self worth doesn’t come from what you own. Your self worth comes from what you create and if you haven’t created anything of your own, you’re still a parasite on humanity. So just do me a favor and don’t be a parasite. Go out and do something amazing.” 5:14 Having self love 6:39 Does Naveen learn more from his successes or failures? 8:48 What limits people from achieving greatness 11:38 Diagnosing disease/cancer with saliva. Curing disease 22:02 What is a Moon Shot? 27:30 Why people struggle to be happy about others’ success 34:04 “I think you and I have always talked about that. Our success is never going to be measured by how much money we have in the bank. It will always be measured by how many people’s lives you actually improve, and that is a sign of success.” 4:48See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

My guest today is Cammie Greif. Cammie is a co-founder of TaxAct. In the mid-1990s, Cammie and three of her former co-workers decided to build a highly profitable tax filing software. With a focus on growth and profit, TaxAct was born. In 2004, Cammie and her partners sold the business to TA Associates a private equity firm. During today's episode, Cammie shares what it was like to run a multi-million dollar company and how the sales process worked out for them. She stayed with the company for fourteen years so she has seen a good chunk of the business cycle. In the mid-2000s, TaxAct was sold again to InfoSpace (now known as Blucora.) Cammie tells me about walking away and finding a new purpose. We follow Cammie's story through their humble beginning in the first floor of a former mortuary to being the third biggest tax service software on the market. Tune in for this incredible story! You will learn about: Cammie's time with Parsons Technologies. How Cammie found her 3 partners and their initial shareholder agreement. The tremendous effort put toward clear communication with the TaxAct leadership. The early milestones for the company and what they did when it didn't happen. Are you building a profitable or a growth-oriented business? Cammie's focus on building a profitable business. Why Microsoft failed in the tax software space. The move to an online service. The 2002 sales pitch and due diligence. The sell to TA Associates in 2004. The expectations of Cammie and her partners. The truth about private equity firms. Why TA? The changes made by TA. The unexpected blow to the business during the first year with TA. How Cammie and her partners corrected the problem. How TA was able to help during that time. Returning to sale plans. Reading in a succession team for a sale pitch. The agreement with HR Block that fell through. The sale to InfoSpace. What it is like selling to a public company. The final deal structure. Cammie's move into startup mentoring. The importance of recognizing trends and patterns in business. Cammie's advice for the listeners. Profitable businesses. We'd all like one, but how many of us started out thinking, “My business is going to make a profit in year one”? Not many. For our guest today, Cammie Greif, however, that's exactly what she did. She and her three co-founders decided that profit was their first and foremost step and that they would do whatever they had to do to run a profitable business. Bootstrapping a Startup You work hard. We all do. But when it comes to getting your enterprise off the ground, are you willing to go without pay for two years? Very few of us could commit to that just to see the revenue of our business grow so we can reinvest it in our company, rather than pay ourselves. However, Cammie's own business plan was just that—go in with the bare minimum, work hard and cash in later. The lessons new entrepreneurs should take (or even repeat entrepreneurs who want to focus on a profit rather than growing the business) from this is: you can make do with a lot less. You don't need the newest and greatest, unless you're in the highest of tech businesses. You really don't need that fancy art, fashionable sitting area or expensive scotch — okay, the scotch maybe… but honestly, there are so many areas you can cut co
