I have been writing about PTSD treatments quite a bit in The Frontier Psychiatrists newsletter. One is offered at Fermata, the clinic I co-run in Brooklyn. I recently wrote an article about it. We provide Prism treatment for PTSD at our clinic, much like our colleagues at Homebase in Boston, with Veteran Populations.Sometimes, you'd rather listen. On that note, here is the podcast version of that article.Other PTSD-themed writing includes…Medical Cannabis for PTSD?PrazosinThe ICU is Traumatic For EveryoneAs well as a whole… Saga… on MDMA:Can MDMA-AT Be Saved, Part ICan MDMA-AT Be Saved, Part IIShould MDMA-AT Be Saved, Part IIISaving MDMA from AT: Part IVBad Touch!: MDMA Part VSaving MDMA (and other psychedelic therapies), Part VISaving MDMA VII: This Isn't The First Drug to Have Problems Getting ApprovedIt's worth noting I'll be appearing on a webinar with the Psychedelic Medicine Association to discuss the following…and I'll include the info from my friend and co-author Dr. Morski, MD, JD:The FDA Said No, What's Next? Exploring the Field's Next Chapter After the MDMA DecisionRegister now!In case you missed the news last week, the FDA officially denied Lykos Therapeutics' New Drug Application for MDMA-assisted therapy, requesting a new Phase III trial be conducted. This was a huge blow to the practitioners and patients who were hoping that MDMA would soon be a legal option to address PTSD, a condition where no other therapy has shown the same levels of efficacy as MDMA-assisted therapy. So you may have questions, like, “When is the next psychedelic medicine likely to be up for FDA approval” and “Which medicine may be the next to reach that stage?” And you may also want an update on what psychedelics (like ketamine) are legally available and how might they serve as a stand-in for the others while we await FDA approvals. This month we are truly fortunate to have panelists working in various arenas within psychedelic medicine and research to help lead a discussion regarding what psychedelic options are currently available and what's to come, including:* Which psychedelic medicines are next in the FDA pipeline* When might we see another psychedelic therapy up for FDA approval* How can we utilize the available psychedelic options in the meantime...and much more!Register now!Panelists joining us for this month's event are:* Owen Muir, MD, DFAACAP | Co-Founder, Fermata; Chief Medical Officer, iRxReminder* Carlene MacMillan, MD, FCTMSS, DFAACAP | Co-Founder, Fermata; Chief Medical Officer, OsmindYou can learn more about them on our event page.So please join us for this live panel discussion on Thursday, August 29th at 5 pm Pacific, 8 pm Eastern. In this episode, David interviews the President of the Psychedelic Medicine Association, host of the Psychedelic Medicine Podcast, and Psychedelics Today advisory board member and Vital contributor: Lynn Marie Morski, MD, JD. She shares her journey with psychedelics and how they enabled her to leave a toxic job and pursue her passion for advocacy with vitality, and how important it is to focus your energy where it's best used. She talks about where we find ourselves in the psychedelic space based on Psychedelic Science 2023, as well as her recent TV appearances and the responsibility of preaching to the non-choir. And she discusses the idea of perfectionism in today's age; the need for psychedelic people to be involved in non-psychedelic conferences; the complications behind requiring physicians to experience psychedelics; the concept of it being malpractice for a physician to not mention psychedelic options; and the Psychedelic Medicine Association's upcoming virtual conference: Sana Symposium 2023, which happens October 26-27.  Morski talks a lot about the importance of educating healthcare professionals about psychedelics, debunking myths, and the need for standards in training therapists and primary care providers. She highlights how there is still no nationally-recognized certification for even ketamine providers, so how can people make informed decisions on who to trust? The Psychedelic Medicine Association is taking steps to improve this paradigm, offering a new course called "Managing Medical Risk in Patients Seeking Psilocybin Therapy," which will work to help clinicians make risk assessments for patients seeking psilocybin therapy – something that is not really being done today.  Click here to head to the show notes page.

"What these substances have in common is that they are widely considered to fall into the category of psychedelics. What else they have in common is that the vast majority of us physicians learned nothing about them in medical school or residency, as most psychedelics are classified as Schedule 1 substances, which suggests they have no currently accepted medical use and pose a high potential for abuse. With these psychedelic-based therapies, clinicians are now presented with options to help patients who haven't benefited from traditional treatments. These therapies are vastly different from current medical models in that there is generally no pill to take every day, and some treatments need to be done only one or two times to have a lasting effect. As some psychedelic therapies are already available, and more are coming soon, now is the time for us to get up to speed on what these psychedelic medicines are, how they work, what conditions they may be able to treat, how they interact with other medications, possible dangers, and what our role may be in facilitating patient access to these medicines." In this episode, Joe interviews MD, attorney, host of the Plant Medicine podcast, and founder of the Psychedelic Medicine Association, Dr. Lynn Marie Morski. She talks about her time working for the United States Department of Veteran Affairs and how her frustrations with not being able to recommend medicines she knew would help people led to her creating the Plant Medicine podcast, and how realizing that the podcast wasn't reaching enough doctors led to her creating the Psychedelic Medicine Association. She discusses their goal: to bring organizations, corporate entities, lawyers, and practitioners/therapists (really anyone in the medical field responsible for the wellbeing of another) together through forums and newsletters to bridge the enormous gap between those on the cutting edge of new medicines and modalities of healing and the more traditional doctors who don't know nearly enough about this emerging world. She talks about her podcast and dedicating 4 full episodes to each drug, common misconceptions about doctors and healthcare, what it's like to be both a doctor and a lawyer, doctors who judge patients for using cannabis and the disservice that is, the complications of what comes after the FDA approves a drug, what’s necessary for getting psychedelics more into mainstream culture, and the silver lining that could come from COVID and COVID-related trauma. Notable Quotes “It should not be weighing job security vs. saving veterans’ lives, but that’s really the position a lot of us are put in, and I couldn’t take that anymore, and so I left the VA and made it my mission to undo the years of silence by speaking out a whole lot about it.” “FDA approval, for example, of MDMA or psilocybin, is just step 1. What do you do when you’ve got a medicine now approved that doctors are afraid to recommend or prescribe because it came out of nowhere? They’re like, ‘Whoa, psychedelics were Schedule I and extremely dangerous and ‘Don’t do drugs!’ and now I’m supposed to be giving it to a patient?’ That is a barrier.” “We’ve known about the 22 veteran suicides, and somehow, still, things haven’t gotten done in mental health. Maybe because, again, that’s ‘other.’ We have this whole issue with others, right? ‘That’s happening to these other people over here.’ The pandemic is one of the first things in... ever that has happened to everybody. It’s not ‘Oh, only the poor get this.’ Nope. Poor and rich. Tom Hanks got it right off the bat. Everybody’s getting it. Prime Ministers get it. And a lot of people are suffering the same mental health issues from the quarantine and so, it’s no longer where we can say ‘Oh, mental health struggles are for others.’ This has hit everybody. ...The suicide rate is rising for everybody. Mental health issues are rising for everybody. Is this the tipping point where the mental health system looks around and says ‘Ok, our tools aren’t sufficient. Can we start looking at these other modalities, including psychedelics, because we’ve got a second epidemic on our hands here?’” “It should be absolutely crucial for anybody on the front lines of patient care to know at least the basics of these medicines. We’re not trying to get doctors to all want to do psychedelic medicine at all. That’s not our goal. If people learn about it and get excited and want to get trained and do that? Fantastic. But we just want a basic level of knowledge, and like you said, if just 20% of doctors knew, that’d be great. And then those doctors can talk to their colleagues in other areas. But that’s essentially the way that we’re impressing it on people: ‘This is coming. You, as a professional responsible for other people’s health need to educate yourself on this.’” Links Psychedelicmedicineassociation.org Psychedelic Medicine Association twitter Plantmedicine.org Plant Medicine Podcast: Antidepressants and Psychedelics with Clinical Pharmacist Ben Malcolm, PharmD Plant Medicine Podcast: Microdosing Q&A with James Fadiman Plant Medicine instagram Psychedelics Today: Spiritual Emergence or Psychosis course North Star Ethics Pledge The Conscious Fund Plant Parenthood podcast with Dr. Lynn Marie Morski About Dr. Lynn Marie Morski Support the show Patreon Leave us a review on Facebook or iTunes Share us with your friends Join our Facebook group - Psychedelics Today group – Find the others and create community. How will doctors who don't know about psychedelic therapies, learn to be receptive to these innovative compounds as valuable tools for their patients? Dr. Lynn Marie Morski, host of the Plant Medicine Podcast, has a brilliant idea–to form an association dedicated to educating medical practitioners about psychedelics. On today's episode, we discuss why Lynn Marie created the Psychedelic Medicine Association. We talk about what it means to create a coalition of ethically aligned actors and how to advance equal access to entheogenic compounds. Lynn Marie shares her entrepreneurial challenges and her dreams about where this association could go in the next 5 to 10 years. As you'll learn on the show, Lynn Marie has quite an impressive background. She is a physician, an attorney, a podcaster, and the author of Quitting by Design. In today’s Solidarity Fridays episode, Joe and Kyle sit down and discuss recent items in the news. They first discuss an update to last week's Michigan story: that this week, the Ann Arbor city council unanimously voted to decriminalize entheogenic plants. While this is great progress, remember that these substances are still illegal- just decriminalized, and as the saying goes: don't be the low-hanging fruit. This brings up the concept of likening the ability to get these substances to earning (and keeping) a driver's license, and the idea of temporary autonomous zones.  Next, they talk about the formation of a global group called the Psychedelic Medicine Association (PMA), formed to bridge the gap between the medical establishment, patients, and the industry in general. While there are already organizations doing this to an extent (like the very website you're on right now), most doctors don't have the time needed to really dive in, and shorter sound bites or articles vetted by those in the know could be very beneficial towards their growth in this new (to them) field.  They also report on a new study pinpointing exactly how psychedelics bind to 5-Ht2a serotonin receptors, which sets the stage for new kinds of antidepressants and antianxiety drugs, could help with cluster headaches, could even help explain HPPD (hallucinogen persisting perception disorder), and leads to a discussion of natural vs. synthetic drugs and the ethics of thinking someone needs to go through the psychedelic experience in order to heal. Lastly, they discuss Compass Pathways going live on the stock market, starting at $17 a share and hitting $38 within a week, which leads to a discussion on how larger companies sue each other over valuable information but regularly take information from Indigenous people and people who've been working in the underground for years. In order to pay proper respect to plant medicine lineages, should we "take" MDMA, LSD, ketamine, and other synthetic substances as part of a western lineage and categorize them differently? Notable Quotes “That’s the vision that I would like to see. More expanded access, less legal presence. Less Empire interfering with the rebels.” -Joe “Is it the case that people need psychedelic experience? No. I would prefer that more people have psychedelic experience, but I don’t think it’s an ethical obligation for more people to have it, or that ‘oh, in order to deserve healing, you need to go through that potentially tortuous or difficult experience [idea]'. Or joyous experience- it doesn’t have to be bad. There’s a lot there, and just thinking that people have an obligation to have the experience is a little whack to me.” -Joe “The hard problem of consciousness is still there. What is mind? Where is mind? What is consciousness? Where is consciousness? Really big questions. We know mind appears real. We know consciousness appears real, but what is that? There’s a lot of questions left. Philosophy of mind and neuroscience are not really communicating too regularly. I saw headlines: ‘Oh look! LSD finally solved! We know how it works now!’ Like, yea, kind of, but not really, because we don’t even know what mind or consciousness is. ...Most people are willing to say ‘mind equals brain,’ and use interchangeably. I think that’s pretty common parlance, but I suggest people check it out. Dig in a little bit to philosophy of mind and limitations of neuroscience and mind. I’m not trying to say we shouldn’t do neuroscience- we absolutely should. But, making conclusive statements like, ‘Oh cool, since neuroscience said this, then God isn’t real' [is] kind of a goofy argument.” -Joe “What it does it look like from a capitalistic point of view? X company develops a patent and then X other company goes over and wants to use that- what usually happens? There’s usually a lawsuit that entails, right? But if X company goes to an indigenous and underground community and extracts information and then they go use that to profit, what really happens there? Not much. The bigger company that has all the money usually will just dominate.” -Kyle Links Marijuanamoment.net: City Council Unanimously Votes To Decriminalize Psychedelics In Ann Arbor, Michigan Wikipedia.org: Temporary Autonomous Zone info Healtheuropa.eu: Psychedelics Association to Bridge Medical Establishment and Industry Gap Plantmedicine.org (Dr. Lynn Marie Morski's podcast) Psychologytoday.com: This Is Your Brain’s 5-HT2A Receptors on LSD or Psilocybin Narrative Medicine: The Use of  History and Story in the Healing Process by, Lewis Mehl-Madrona Genengnews.com: Scientists Solve High-Resolution Structure of Psychedelic Drugs Bound to Serotonin Receptors Realmoney.thestreet.com: Compass Pathways Takes Investors on a Trip to Higher Prices Support the show Patreon Leave us a review on Facebook or iTunes Share us with your friends Join our Facebook group - Psychedelics Today group – Find the others and create community. In this episode, host Dr. Lynn Marie Morski, who is also president of the soon-to-be-launched Psychedelic Medicine Association, discusses what services the association will be providing what needs it will address, and how the collaborations fostered in the association will contribute to real-world improvements in access to psychedelic therapies.  With her background in the medical field, Dr. Moski outlines why it is so difficult for practicing clinicians to encounter information about treatments such as psychedelic therapy. As doctors mostly stay up-to-date through medical journals and association emails, the excitement around the therapeutic potential of plant medicines in the broader culture doesn't necessarily translate to clinicians knowing the subject in detail.  The Psychedelic Medicine Association will seek to rectify this lack of awareness by providing content geared towards medical professionals- connecting them with the latest science and providing resources so they are better able to respond to patient questions regarding psychedelic therapies. The association will even provide a forum for clinicians to interact with each other as they navigate understanding these medicines, as well as a forum to connect health professionals with other experts in the burgeoning field of psychedelic therapy.  To celebrate the launch of the Plant Medicine Association, they will be hosting a webinar at 1:00 PM Eastern on September 29th featuring a panel discussion on bridging the gap between the psychedelic science and clinical medicine worlds to introduce the association and begin discussing how to best address the barriers to getting these medicines in the hands of patients in need. In this Episode: Discussing the launch of the Psychedelic Medicine Association The barriers to clinicians being fully informed on psychedelic medicine Why clinicians are wary to discuss psychedelic therapy The importance of dialogue between healthcare workers and those working within psychedelic science, medicine, and law How the Psychedelic Medicine Association will fill this niche and work to better integrate psychedelic therapy into existing institutions of medicine and psychiatry Quotes "The vast majority of good-hearted doctors are not trying to keep their head in the sand when it comes to psychedelics — it just has not come across most of their journals." [6:57] "A big part of what the entire psychedelic science industry is trying to do is overcome that stigma which came from [psychedelics] being illegal for so long, and as you probably know, you overcome that stigma with education." [12:04] "We want doctors and clinicians and those on the front lines of patient care to be well-informed so that they can present a full range of options to their patients." Dr. Lynn Marie Morski is a Mayo Clinic-trained physician in family medicine and sports medicine, as well as an attorney and former adjunct law professor.  She hosts the Plant Medicine Podcast, is the founder of Plant Medicine.org, and serves as medical director for WayofLeaf.com. Dr. Morski worked at the Veterans Administration for nine years, and her biggest frustration during that time was that she was unable to discuss the benefits of many medications she knew could help the veterans she was serving, like cannabinoid treatments and psychedelic-assisted therapy. Dr. Morski practiced medicine for 14 years, and after leaving clinical medicine, she made it her mission to help fill the gap in the medical community's knowledge of psychedelics by educating her fellow physicians on the plant medicines and entheogens that could bring life-changing relief to their patients, while also educating potential users on what options they could seek for treatment of their conditions beyond the pharmaceuticals they're sold on commercials. In furtherance of this mission, she started the Plant Medicine Podcast to bring scientific researchers, practitioners, and those who have been personally affected by the healing powers of these plants together to help educate the public on what is possible and help further research and decriminalization of these substances. It changes our way of thinking, changes our perception, and changes our life. Anything along the lines of natural tools such as breathwork, meditation, or sound that create endogenous DMT is always going to be in the right direction." - John Chavez         Cleansing The Brain Through Breathwork "From what I've seen, the quickest way to get in an altered state is breathwork. It's faster than hypnosis or meditation. Deep breathing also correlates with the cleansing of the brain. It's like DMT acts as an antioxidant and anti-inflammatory; so, producing these sorts of chemicals would seem to be optimal for the brain. There's enough evidence to show that endogenous DMT produced by proper breathwork creates more optimized fluid dynamics in the brain and thus allowing us to kind of clear out debris; not only when we sleep but also when we're awake too." - John Chavez       Unpacking What 'Source' Is "We have the idea that we're disconnected from everything but there is a source, something powering everything on this earth. 'Source' is like the Sun; without it, everything on this plant will die. There needs to be a bridge between scientific results and the ability of the general public to understand these results in a straightforward manner. In this digital age of media, he believes that a widely distributed ongoing docuseries can provide a tool to accomplish this goal. After having operated as an independent researcher for 5 years and having written 2 books titled “Questions for the Lion Tamer: Delving into the Mystery that is DMT” and “Questions for the Lion Tamer 2: Swimming in Electric Endohuasca”, he believes that it is now time to take everything to the next level. DMT Research This entire field of research has been lagging tremendously since the 1970’s financially speaking. It is embarrassing that with an annual budget of over $39 billion dollars that the NIH still refuses to allocate any amount to endogenous DMT research. One would figure that if the NIH can spend $3.2 million studying the effects of alcohol in monkeys, it can surely spend the same amount on a field that the general public is extremely interested in such as endogenous DMT. In any case, it’s been estimated that there are nearly 2,500 billionaires in the world and likely over 50,000 hundred millionaires (people with $100,000,000 or more). There is enough private funding out there collecting dust that could change this endogenous DMT research industry in a very short time frame.     About DMT Quest DMT Quest is a 501c3 non-profit organization that is focused on raising money and awareness for endogenous DMT research. This organization operates under a strict 100% transparency code in which all fundraising generated by DMT Quest will be publicly disclosed on our website and any expenses/allocations will be publicly posted as well (in a straightforward manner). This company was created in order to solve the problem of a lack of funding for endogenous DMT research. While a psychedelic renaissance of sorts is taking place currently (2019) in which companies such as MAPS have raised upwards of nearly $50 million for exogenous psychedelic studies, the endogenous research capital has been minimal at best. Today I'm sharing with you the psilocybin patient experience. Disclaimer: I’m not coming to you as a doctor, lawyer, or researcher in this episode, but simply as someone who has experienced psilocybin and is talking about the experience for educational purposes. This was my first (and to this date only) experience with a curated psilocybin ceremony, involving intention setting, a playlist specifically-designed for the journey, and a well-planned environment. It was actually that experience that ultimately led me to start this podcast. I describe how this psilocybin experience helped convey certain messages and led me into a sense of clarity through new introspection. During my psilocybin journey, I was able to deeply reflect on episodes in my life in ways that gave them the closure I hadn’t even been aware that I needed. It helped me gain perspective on my anxiety and actually be grateful for its source. I have since been able to carry some of the clarity of this experience forward with me in other aspects of my life. As a bonus, I discuss a bit about how a microdose of psilocybin led me to finally quit practicing medicine.   In this episode: Setting intentions as part of a psilocybin ceremony The messages that the plants can convey during an experience The clarity that is imparted by psilocybin How psilocybin has affected my sense of anxiety The possible delayed introspective effects of psilocybin microdosing   Quotes: “A lot of times the people who are guiding these ceremonies have a certain intuition to them.” [7:58] “Especially during this psilocybin journey, I felt like the plants were speaking to me. Not necessarily in a language but in very clear senses in what they were trying to convey.” [10:40] “When you’re in the effects, things seem so dramatic and real and you feel this sense of calm and oneness. It’s hard to realize that that’s going to wear off.” [16:39]   Links: Get 20% off everything at Octogon Biolabs with coupon code 'plantmedicine’    Check out the full episode post Keep up with everything Plant Medicine related here Porangui

Today’s episode discusses the history and legality of ketamine. Being so widely available and legal in many places, including the United States, ketamine’s story is different from many other medicines discussed in this show. With that being the case, we’ll also hear the experience of one more patient who has made use of ketamine therapy. When many people hear of ketamine they think of a horse tranquilizer, party-drug, or battlefield medicine. This diversity of uses reflects the varied history of this drug. Ketamine was patented for human and animal use in 1966 and approved by the FDA in 1970. It soon after found widespread use as a field anesthetic in Vietnam. It wasn’t long before the medical and non-medical uses of ketamine expanded worldwide. In the 1990s, researches found that ketamine has many effects in the treatment of depression and chronic pain.  In the United States, ketamine is a Schedule 3 drug, meaning that it is widely available as long as a patient has a prescription from their physician. However, in Canada, Australia, and New Zealand, ketamine remains illegal. Many other countries restrict the drug to veterinary use only. The second part of this episode is a discussion with Jennifer about how she approached her physician about using ketamine and her journey with this medicine. While searching for relief from her chronic depression and anxiety, Jennifer came across ketamine treatments. While she initially faced pushback from her psychologist, Jennifer went ahead with her treatment. She discusses how ketamine was able to treat her depression as well as migraines in a way that the other drugs she had taken had not.    In this episode: A brief history of the legality of ketamine in the United States What early studies into the various medical uses of ketamine uncovered Where ketamine is legal and in what forms The challenge of finding a doctor who agrees with a patient’s interest in alternative therapies The small but meaningful changes that one patient felt after starting ketamine therapy   Quotes: “The fact that there are so many different ways that people have heard of ketamine is a testament to how many things it can do.” [5:11] “If you are considering ketamine, it is a matter of finding a physician or a center that offers it intravenously or intramuscularly. Or work with a psychologist or psychotherapist who offers it, often in the lozenge or nasal form.” [7:56] “So many little things. It felt like I could take deep breaths. I wasn’t always on edge with stress and anger and being defeated. When that little bit starts to lift -- that’s a lot!” - Jennifer [14:20]   Links: Get 20% off everything at Octogon Biolabs with coupon code 'plantmedicine’ Ketamine.com The Third Wave   Check out the full episode post Keep up with everything Plant Medicine related here Porangui

Quit Happens | How (and why!) to strategically quit your job, leave your relationship, or part ways with toxic mindsets.

I'm so excited to celebrate 100 episodes (can you believe it?) of Quit Happens with you today, and to do so, I'm going to be sharing two interviews where I was the guest on other podcasts.  If you're a regular listener you're probably already familiar with Mike Bledsoe of The Bledsoe Show and Josh Trent of Wellness Force. I love these two humans so much and wanted to share these two amazing conversations for you to enjoy as well. A couple links I mention that are worth checking out: Jason Goldberg's Episode  And the even funnier YouTube video   Show Notes From My Episode On The Bledsoe Show Dr. Lynn Marie Morski is a physician, attorney, and life-long quitting enthusiast. She practices medicine at the Veterans Administration and shares her love of strategic quitting through speaking, coaching, and her podcast Quit Happens. Her goal is to pass on the strategic quitting skills she's developed to help people go from settling to succeeding. When she's not doctoring, lawyering, or evangelizing quitting, Dr. Morski is also a certified yoga instructor, trains the Brazilian martial art of capoeira, plays guitar and bass, and dances like everyone is watching. In this episode, we talk about strategic quitting, her various careers, her book Quitting By Design, and her upcoming podcast on plant medicine   Check out the full post here   Show Notes From My Episode On Wellness Force “You want to live your truth as much as you can. So many people think that “quitting” is this dirty word but to me, “settling,” is the dirty word.” – Dr. Lynn Marie Morski Deep down you know it's time for a change but how can you leave a job, relationship, or educational pursuits and feel secure, safe, and happy about your quit?  On Wellness Force Radio episode 247, Coach, Speaker, Author of Quitting by Design, and Host of the Quit Happens Podcast, Dr. Lynn Marie Morski, shares why quitting can be a beneficial form of self-care and discovering what works for each person, the number one reason why people don't embrace the quit, and how quitting vs. settling are two very different things Discover what a strategic quit is and how to use it to your advantage and for the benefit of your mind and body.  Thousands of self-help books have been written to tell people to live their best lives, without necessarily addressing the fact that making major life changes almost always requires quitting one thing and starting another. This pain point – the quitting itself – is often the barrier to change. Many avoid quitting because they fear the unknown. Will they find another career or relationship? Will their new path provide financial stability? Will friends and family question the decision to quit?  Will society see them as quitters? These questions generally go unaddressed. But that’s where Quitting by Design comes in – its sole focus is to help people through their quits successfully so they can proceed with their transformations. It’s a step-by-step guide that takes readers from deciding if there’s something they should quit all the way to preparing their health, finances, and relationships for a quiet, and it helps them conquer any fears that may pop up along the way. Dr. Lynn Marie Morski knows how to address fears and prepare your health, relationships, and finances for a quit because she's been there time and again. She has quit educational pursuits, jobs, careers, relationships, political parties…you name it; she's found a way to quit it while maximizing the benefits and minimizing the challenges associated with major life changes. And she wants nothing more than to pass these skills along to you.   With this book, Dr. Morski aims to pass on what she's learned about quitting not only from her own experiences but also through interviews with others who have made successful quits themselves. She tackles the stigma surrounding quitting while highlighting what a useful and necessary tool it can be in carving out a life you enjoy. Listen To Episode 247 As Dr. Lynn Marie Morski Uncovers: Her journey as a “lifelong quitter” from going to a physician to an attorney to a law professor. The connection between mental and physical health when it comes to feeling shame. Steps we can take to just stop being so serious all the time. Why our fear of the unknown makes it so hard to quit when it comes to moving on with our health, wealth, and relationships. How to get over the anxiety of what other people think of our quit when we want to make a life change. Why money is the number one reason why people don't embrace the quit. How to test out your quit in your mind to see how it feels long before you actually take action. Why she's against the idea that everything happens for a reason but doesn't have any regrets because they've all led her to this very moment in her life. The signs that it's time for a quit and how to recognize them. What to do if your inner circle is not on board with your strategic quit and fresh start. How to get out of the mindset that “quitters” never win and you have to fake it to make it. Why sharing your quits with other people can help other people with their own strategic quits. The stigmas around quitting and why society has leaned towards this narrative of shaming people for making drastic life changes. Journaling practice for strategic quitting and discovering where you need to make a life change.  How to prepare your health for a quit via insurance and hospital check-up visits. Wellness practices you should get in order before you make the strategic quit actually happen. Steps you can take to quit an “identity” and create a new one that truly fits who you want to be. Diversification of identity: why we aren't just one thing but many parts within our own identity. How quitting can actually be a generous act for not only yourself but other people too. Her 3 physical practices that can help you get clear about whether or else you need a strategic quit. Power Quotes From The Show “If you're quitting something that may seem like a dream job to others or feel this societal pressure to not quit, you have to stop and realize that the people who are going to judge you aren't you. They're not in your shoes, they're not in your head, and they're not living your life. You're the one who has to live your life; why should you let what somebody else's thoughts of you shape your existence?” – Lynn Marie Morski “Does your boss want an employee who's constantly looking for a way out? No. Do other people a favor by quitting. Quitting is actually a generous act at some point because they should want somebody in that position who wants to be in that position. If you're forcing yourself to be in this job, you're actually doing them a disservice and there's an opportunity cost for both you and them.” – Lynn Marie Morski “As a society, we're avoiding putting ourselves out there. We need to quit this facade, quit the mask, and quit this external game. Social media has made it so much worse and is doing the opposite of what it should be doing.” – Lynn Marie Morski Links From Today's Show Check out the full post here Dr. Lynn Marie Morski Facebook Twitter Instagram YouTube LinkedIn Quitting by Design by Dr. Lynn Marie Morski Quit Happens Podcast So Full of Quit! Today’s episode covers the history and legality of CBD. While this should not be construed as legal advice, you will learn about some of the background of CBD and where it fits into the current legal landscape. In order to understand the legality of CBD, it’s important to know the difference between hemp and cannabis. Hemp contains less than 0.3 percent THC content, while cannabis has more. Although CBD can be extracted from either of these plants, the majority of CBD on the market comes from hemp. The production of hemp in the United States has been greatly affected by various laws over the last one hundred years. In fact, it wasn’t until the Farm Bill of 2018 that hemp was removed from the Controlled Substances Act, allowing for the harvesting of CBD seen today. CBD has been known to have potential medical applications for decades, however recent changes in both state and federal laws have led to its new proliferation around the country. Since laws vary from state to state and not all CBD comes from legal sources, it’s important to know where each particular state stands. In this episode: The difference between hemp and cannabis and why this distinction matters A brief history of the word marijuana and why many people are avoiding its use A history of hemp production and how anti-drug laws have affected it The discovery and study of CBD as a compound with potential medical uses What to look out for when determining the legality of a CBD product in a particular state Quotes “CBD can be extracted from both marijuana and hemp as both of them have cannabidiol, or CBD, in them among other cannabinoids.” [4:34] “It is a rapidly developing area and the FDA is still working to develop a regulatory path for hemp-derived CBD.”[10:43] “In states where cannabis is not legal, then CBD from cannabis is also not legal.” [12:29] Links Keep up with everything Plant Medicine related here Porangui Get 20% off everything at Octogon Biolabs with coupon code 'plantmedicine’

Welcome to the first episode of the Plant Medicine Podcast with Dr. Lynn Marie Morski. This episode discusses the aims of the show - which are to demystify and destigmatize the use of plant and psychedelic medicines. Hemp-derived CBD is now legal in all 50 states, cannabis is legal for at least medical use in more than half of the states and in various countries around the world, psilocybin (magic mushrooms) were just decriminalized in two American cities and there are several ballot measures and groups aiming to increase that number, and MDMA and psilocybin have been given 'breakthrough therapy' status by the FDA. But as a medical doctor, I know that we weren't taught anything about any of these substances in medical school. So when patients come to doctors for advice, those doctors are often unaware of the non-pharmaceutical options available to treat some of the toughest conditions, like chronic pain, addiction, PTSD, and depression. This show aims to educate both the medical establishment and interested patients on the scientific research into the powers of these medications to help with various conditions, as well as the safe use of these substances. NOTE: This show is not medical nor legal advice and should not be construed as such. It is also not suggesting you participate in any illegal activities. The show is for education purposes only.

As a physician, attorney, speaker, author, and lifelong quitter, Lynn Marie Morski founded Quitting By Design, wrote a book about it, and is now on a mission to help people carve out a successful life through strategic quitting.  At first blush, this might sound like an odd pairing for a podcast about Perseverance, but the truth is that it wasn't until I quit playing Division I Lacrosse at Boston College, that I was able to discover acting, which became my life's passion and my career.     We talk about how quitting can help reveal your life’s purpose, how to maximize the benefits and minimize the challenges associated with major life changes, the number of ways in which quitting can lead to more success than you've ever had, why quitting has been stigmatized, the benefits of confronting your fears of being labeled a "failure" if you decide to quit something, and how to prepare yourself for a "successful" quit, whether from a job, a relationship or something else entirely.     SHOWNOTES:   “The difference between quitting and giving up is that, quitting is when you realize that something is just not in line with your passion your purpose and your values”, (07:28). “I don’t think I give up a lot, I quit when I realize that something is not for me, but it may not take me a long time to make that realization”, (09:08). I pass that along to a lot of people that I speak to who worry a lot about what other people will think when they quit and I point out that those other people have never been you they’ve never been in your shoes, and secondly, in today’s distractful society how long are they going to think about it period, (10:05). “A lot of times when you quit a thing people are actually proud of you, and think it’s a courageous move so they might think nothing...if they think negatively, how long until they swipe down on Instagram, they will think about it for such a short period of time while you have to live it 24/7”, (10:25). “If its a marriage that’s ruining your life, and you’re like ‘what will people think of me when I get divorced?’ people will think about it for 30 seconds, you’re living it 24/7, if it’s stressing you it’s taking years off your life, not theirs”, (10:46). “To continuously tell people to live their best life without giving them the tools to leave the other one is not really fair”, (12:56). “If you want to call it evolving, or whatever it takes us for us to destigmatize it [quitting] I will go down that path with you but the point is that you gotta stop what isn’t working and start a new thing”, (13:46). The strategic quitting plan has FIVE STEPS, the first is realizing that something needs to go. Step two is figuring out exactly what it is, or where the friction point is. The next step is identifying and overcoming any fear for leaving what you want to quit. Step four is preparing the logistics, and then the fifth step is enacting the quit in a way that preserves the relationship as best as possible and burns the fewest of bridges”, (14:33). “My first semester of college I changed my major four times”, (20:46). “A lot of people see this and they may say that it’s selfish of you to quit, but it is selfish of you not to quit. If you are in a position that you are not at your best and if your”, (31:20). If you learn anything from time spent in a relationship, educational endeavor, then it’s not a waste, even if the thing you learned is that you never want to do it again, (38:20). “The word NO means not right for you right now, or yes to something else”, (38:45). “That’s why the fifth step of quitting is really important because as long as you don’t burn bridges and you maintain those relationships, it’s a lot more likely that you’ll be able to go back to that other thing,” (40:00). MOTTOS: This too shall pass, this is all happening for a reason, this is all part of a plan, (40:44). I wish I could go back to 3-year old me and stop worrying, (42:00).      LINKS:   Website: https://quittingbydesign.com   Podcast: https://quittingbydesign.com/quit-happens-podcast/ Amazon: https://www.amazon.com/Quitting-Design-Lynn-Marie-Morski/dp/1641825375   LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/lynn-marie-morski-md-esq/   Fitness: https://medicalfitnesstour.org/speaker/lynn-marie-morski-md-esq/   Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/quittingbydesign/     RELATED PAST EPISODES OF 10,000 “NO”s:     Jesse Bradley - https://www.10000nos.com/episodes/ep-77-how-to-find-faith-pro-soccer-player-turned-pastor-jesse-bradley?rq=PERSEVERANCE   Suze Yalof Schwartz- https://www.10000nos.com/episodes/ep-39-unplug-meditation-ceofounder-suze-yalof-schwartz?rq=perseverance    Colin Macintosh- https://www.10000nos.com/episodes/ep-23-hot-wings-to-hedgefunds-colin-macintosh?rq=quit    Heather Hayward- https://www.10000nos.com/episodes/ep-48elite-results-coachheather-hayward?rq=law   If you like what you hear, please Subscribe, leave an iTunes review and spread the word. Lynn Marie Morski, MD, has played every instrument, every sport, run for every office and she quit them all to lie on the beach.  OK, none of that is true except the lie on the beach part since she lives in San Diego, but she is a quitting evangelist.  We discuss when to quit and more importantly, when NOT to quit, the psychology of quitting and what prevents us from following through.  She has a five point plan for strategic quitting, so we go through all five steps.  Even though her platform is quitting for EVERYONE, she is a physician, so she understands the struggles we face and specifically tailors her quitting strategy to our profession.  She helps people quit anything that’s no longer serving them, like jobs, relationships, or mindsets, through her book, Quitting by Design, and her podcast, Quit Happens, along with speaking and coaching. She is also a board-certified physician in family medicine and sports medicine, currently working at the Veterans Administration, and she serves as Chief Medical Editor for PRIME, the largest peak performance, optimization, and longevity marketplace in the country. In addition, she is an attorney and former adjunct law professor. In this episode, Marc and Lynn discuss her book, Quitting by Design and discuss the advantages to quitting a job you don’t fit, some of the fears associated with quitting, how to prepare logically to meet the fears and move beyond them, and what you can learn from a job you hate and from leaving that job. Listen in for more ideas for your next career pivot or ‘quit.’   Key Takeaways: [:58] Marc welcomes you to Episode 107 of the Repurpose Your Career podcast. [1:11] CareerPivot.com brings you this podcast. CareerPivot.com is one of the very few websites dedicated to those of us in the second half of lives and our careers. Take a moment to check out the blog and the other resources that are delivered to you, free of charge. [1:30] If you are enjoying this podcast, Marc asks you to share it with like-minded souls. Please subscribe on CareerPivot.com, iTunes, and the Google Podcasts app, Podbean, Overcast app, TuneIn, Spotify app, or Stitcher. Share it on social media, or just tell your neighbors and colleagues. [1:51] We are coming to the end of the 2018 Repurpose Your Career Podcast Survey. Over 40 people have taken the survey. Marc will probably leave it up for another week. [2:05] In order to improve the show, Marc needs to know something about you — how you listen to the show; if you read the show notes; what kinds of episodes are your favorites. [2:15] Marc asks if you would kindly go to CareerPivot.com/podcast-survey (where you will be redirected to SurveyMonkey) to take the survey. Marc will publish the results very likely in January. As Marc records this in Matehuala, Mexico, on the way back to Ajijic, he has surpassed 40 survey participants. He thanks you in advance for doing this. [2:49] Next week, Marc will share an encore episode where he interviewed Elizabeth Rabaey. Elizabeth has made multiple pivots to go from an air and water environmental permitting specialist, to be a creative marketing type. [3:05] This week, Marc interviews Dr. Lynn Marie Morski, who is a quitting evangelist. She helps people quit strategically, through her book, Quitting by Design, and her podcast, Quit Happens. [3:23] Marc welcomes Dr. Lynn Marie Morski to the Repurpose Your Career podcast.[4:04] Lynn explains the differences between quitting and failing. [4:41] Quitting strategically puts you in an empowered position. It is better than hoping for the best in a job where you are not performing until suddenly you get fired without any plans for what comes next. [5:11] Unless you are independently wealthy, plan your next move. Marc has quit jobs. Once he was laid off, at his request. One of Marc’s favorite books is Necessary Endings, by Dr. Henry Cloud. In order for new things to start, we have to end things. [6:04] Your body will tell you when it’s time to quit. When your body starts giving you signals, such as anxiety, insomnia, or a discontented feeling, you start to have chronic pain, or you start getting really irritable with your co-workers, loved ones, or friends, those are all signs that something is out of alignment and needs to be changed. [6:49] Sometimes when people feel this way, they start adding things. It may be that you need to subtract something that isn’t working for you, not add something else. [6:56] A therapist may point out to you the things that are not working for you. Sometimes another view can help us see what is not obvious to ourselves. [8:11] Marc tells of times a therapist has helped him make a career change. It comes down to finding out what is creating the situation that is not working for you. [8:32] There are fears around quitting. Lynn separates them into esoteric and logistical fears. If you wonder what about all the time and money you’ve wasted pursuing your career, overcome your fear by seeing the ‘sunk cost fallacy.’ Having put money into something is no reason to stay in it. [9:37] If you were willing to spend time and money pursuing something you don’t want, the money you spent is gone, anyway. Don’t you owe it to yourself to find something you enjoy doing? Lynn talks about her medical school loans. She invested a lot in herself to follow a specific path. [10:29] Lynn finished her Sports Medicine fellowship in 2009 and realized during that year that she didn’t love it. She decided what she did not want in her career. She chose to quit having a pager, quit prescribing, and quit working nights and weekends, sitting on the sidelines. She chose to do VA compensation and pension exams. [13:24] Going through this process helped Lynn realize how to help other people who can’t make a dramatic ‘quit.’ To completely quit medicine is a lot bigger deal than to quit having specific aspects in a medical job. [13:40] Marc notes that quitting is only bad if you haven’t learned something. He shares an experience from his IBM days. He quit from one position he hated in less than a year but he still uses what he learned from that year in his current practice. He’s glad he did it but enough of it was enough. [14:50] People may fear that they have wasted whatever time they spent in a job they quit. The only way you can find out what you want to do is by experimenting. Not all those experiments are going to be slam-dunks. If you learn from it, it was not wasted. [15:23] If Marc hated his IBM job and then took the same job at a competitor, yes, he would have wasted that time because he wouldn’t have learned from it. If you take an experience and learn what you do like, and what you don’t like, then it’s not a waste. [15:40] Marc admits that multiple times in his career he has relapsed by going back to something he had done earlier, and not learning from the first time what he wanted to avoid. He says you have to learn from your mistakes, and not forget what you’ve learned! [16:20] Besides the fears of sunk costs and wasted jobs, people may fear what other people may think. That is the least problem because nothing of what people think about you is nearly as important as what you think about yourself. What you experience is more real to you than what someone else may or may not be thinking. [18:37] Marc recalls the episode with Jennifer Winter, who was head of sponsorship for Turner Broadcasting Sports. She did not like sports. People told her she had the greatest job ever, but it was not for her. Quitting is OK even if others don’t understand or support your decision. [19:53] When somebody says something disapproving, it takes five seconds of your day. Contrast that with the 40 hours a week you have to put into the job. How does that balance out? [20:45] If a person can’t quit and needs the money coming in. Strategically quitting is the answer. You want to up-level your life, not end up on the street. Lynn says to save up a nest egg or emergency fund, start a side hustle and work at it until it can take over as your main job, or start interviewing while you are still at the job you’re quitting. [22:00] If you have to leave the job and you haven’t found a replacement job, find ways to live on half of your income and cut back on expenses so you can prepare for some time between jobs or finding a job with less earning potential than you had before. [22:28] Marc recommends listeners to go back two episodes to listen to Susan Joyce of Job-Hunt.org. Susan talks about proactive vs. reactive job search. Marc reminds listeners he is moving to Mexico to be able to live on a third of the cost of living in Austin. This reduction in his cost of living allows Marc a huge amount of freedom. [23:03] Marc also recommends you not to listen to what others tell you. Get the facts for yourself. [23:14] You can find Lynn’s book or reach Lynn for coaching at QuittingByDesign.com. Also, you can contact Lynn on Instagram, Facebook, or YouTube at QuittingByDesign. [23:44] Marc thanks Dr. Lynn Marie Morski for being on the Repurpose Your Career podcast. Marc hopes you enjoyed this episode — it might inspire you to be a quitter! [23:56] Susan Lahey and Marc are working on the next edition of Repurpose Your Career, and Marc is looking for your help. Marc is forming a release team of readers who will get access to pre-release chapters of the book to provide feedback. You can be part of this team by going to CareerPivot.com/RYCTeam where you can sign up. [24:19] When you sign up, you’ll receive the pre-release version of chapters when they become available. What Marc asks in return is for you to provide feedback and be prepared to write a review on Amazon.com when the book is released. [24:34] Marc and Susan are adding around eight new chapters to the book and re-writing several others. Marc’s goal is to have a chapter on the podcast and to the team every four to six weeks in the coming months. Marc may start a private Facebook group for the team to discuss their thoughts. [24:58] Please go to CareerPivot.com/podcast-survey and take the 2018 Repurpose Your Career podcast survey on SurveyMonkey.com. Welcome physician and lawyer (yes she's a physician and lawyer) Dr. Lynn Marie Morski. Give yourself permission to leave something if it doesn't serve you any longer Your feelings might be telling you something: anxiety, frustration, envy, etc., are signals that that maybe we need to quit certain parts of our life. Quitting doesn't have to be all or none (although it can be), quitting small aspects of the things we do in life can enhance our quality of life. Creating a not-to-do list is a powerful tool to organizing your thoughts and creating space for what you might want to do. Two basic types of fear involved in quitting: esoteric and logistical. Esoteric fears are the common fear we all experience inside our heads. Logistical fears are about "how are we going to make this actually work." Logistical fear requires strategy and planning. She has quit educational pursuits, jobs, careers, relationships, political parties...you name it; she's found a way to quit it while maximizing the benefits and minimizing the challenges associated with major life changes. Lynn Marie Morski Uncovers: Her journey as a "lifelong quitter" from going to a physician to an attorney to a law professor. How to get out of the mindset that "quitters" never win and you have to fake it to make it. Steps you can take to quit an "identity" and create a new one that truly fits who you want to be. Diversification of identity: why we aren't just one thing but many parts within our own identity. How quitting can actually be a generous act for not only yourself but other people too. Her 3 physical practices that can help you get clear about whether or else you need a strategic quit. Power Quotes From The Show "'QUIT until the life you want is yours." - Dr. Lynn Marie Morski "If you're quitting something that may seem like a dream job to others or feel this societal pressure to not quit, you have to stop and realize that the people who are going to judge you aren't you. They're not in your shoes, they're not in your head, and they're not living your life. You're the one who has to live your life; why should you let what somebody else's thoughts of you shape your existence?" - Lynn Marie Morski "Does your boss want an employee who's constantly looking for a way out? No. Do other people a favor by quitting. Quitting is actually a generous act at some point because they should want somebody in that position who wants to be in that position. If you're forcing yourself to be in this job, you're actually doing them a disservice and there's an opportunity cost for both you and them." - Lynn Marie Morski "As a society, we're avoiding putting ourselves out there. We need to quit this facade, quit the mask, and quit this external game. Social media has made it so much worse and is doing the opposite of what it should be doing." - Lynn Marie Morski   Links From Today's Show Dr. Lynn Marie Morski Facebook Twitter Instagram YouTube LinkedIn Quitting by Design by Dr. Lynn Marie Morski Quit Happens Podcast So Full of Quit! Repurpose Your Career | Career Pivot | Careers for the 2nd Half of Life | Career Change | Baby Boomer

In this episode, Marc recounts the details of traveling back to the U.S. from Mexico without a guide other than Google Maps. They clean out the condo and prepare it for rental. They sell what they don’t want to keep, store what they do, and give the remainder to the Salvation Army. Marc shares the health benefits he and his wife have experienced through walking more and eating healthier and the financial benefits of a more affordable healthcare system including health insurance at a fraction of the cost of the ACA programs. Marc describes the trip back to Austin and why you don’t drive at night in Mexico!   Key Takeaways: [1:11] Marc welcomes you to Episode 106 of the Repurpose Your Career podcast. [1:22] CareerPivot.com brings you this podcast. CareerPivot.com is one of the very few websites dedicated to those of us in the second half of lives and our careers. Share it on social media, or just tell your neighbors and colleagues. The more people Marc reaches, the more he can help. [2:07] Marc has released the 2018 Repurpose Your Career Podcast Survey. Marc thanks listeners who have already taken the survey. [2:15] In order to improve the show, Marc needs to know something about you — how you listen to the show; if you read the show notes; what kinds of episodes are your favorites. [2:25] Marc asks if you would kindly go to CareerPivot.com/podcast-survey (where you will be redirected to SurveyMonkey) to take the survey. Marc will publish the results in a couple of months. In the last week of November, Marc has 35 survey participants, so far. He thanks you in advance for doing this survey for the podcast. [2:50] Next week, Marc will interview Dr. Lynn Marie Morski, who is a quitting evangelist. She helps people quit strategically, through her book, Quitting by Design, and her podcast, Quit Happens. [3:06] This week, Marc takes you on the next steps in becoming an expat in Mexico. Marc and his wife have returned to Austin for six weeks, where they are cleaning out their condo and preparing for their return trip to become semi-permanent residents of Mexico. [3:24] Marc tells of their plan to clean out the condo, apply for visas at the Mexican Embassy in Laredo, get route advice from Juan Pablo (J.P.), get a new car battery, bring cats to the vet, get inn reservations, and use Google Maps for their first solo trip back. [5:15] Mexican highways include several roads in various directions with the same number. Google Maps was invaluable for directions. [5:37] The Millers left on a Tuesday, to avoid trucks that are usually released on Mondays. Going North is very different from going South, primarily because of security checkpoints. [6:04] The Mexican countryside is “drop-dead gorgeous.” Marc wants to take a lot more pictures on their way back down. As they started toward Matehuala there was fairly minimal truck traffic for a good distance. [6:32] Once the truck traffic picked up, there were stretches with one car for every 10 trucks. Marc found a truck going the speed they wanted and followed it for hundreds of miles, as J.P. had suggested. [7:08] On Day One, the Millers ran into one security checkpoint but they were not stopping anyone. The first day was pretty uneventful. They had brought all the food they needed to eat on the trip, so their only stops were for bathroom breaks. [7:33] At the end of Day One, the Millers stayed at the Las Palmas Midway Inn in Matehuala. It is a 1950s style motor inn. Many expats stay there because it is pet-friendly. It was almost full when Marc made the reservation, a week ahead of the trip. This is when all the snowbirds start coming down. [8:11] This time, the cats were a whole lot more comfortable traveling. They were fine at the inn and in the car. The first day was easy. The Millers stopped at the Matehuala Walmart and bought a few things. The hotel restaurant was actually very, very good. [8:46] On Day Two Marc and his wife started out at 7:30, and boy, did they see trucks! Trucks and more trucks. They went through multiple security checkpoints. One of the major ones actually backed up things for an hour. They were in bumper-to-bumper traffic for an hour as they diverted all trucks off to be searched. [9:16] When the Millers got up to the checkpoint, cars were funneled to the left and were waved through. The car in front of the Millers was a high-powered car driven by a Mexican, and the security officers pulled it over to inspect. [9:37] There was also a fruta stop to check for fruit. Marc knew enough Spanish to be able to answer no when the officer asked if they had any fruit in the car. [9:53] Marc and his wife drove all the way up to Nuevo Laredo, to cross at the Laredo border crossing. First, they had to stop at the Banjercito where they surrendered the Temporary Import Permit (TIP) for their car and received back the $400 deposit they paid for their car. If you miss this, you will be barred from bringing a car back to Mexico. [10:55] Marc pulled into the wrong side of the Banjercito booth, and they directed him to turn around and approach on the correct side. They peeled the sticker off and informed the Millers the deposit would be refunded to the Millers’ credit card in three or four days. [11:14] Next was the Immigration (IMM) Office where they took the Millers’ tourist visa (FMM) card. Next would be the U.S. Customs on the other side of the border. [11:37] The Millers had all the paperwork for the cats, as they were supposed to have. That was good because Customs did check their cats. [11:49] These are highly-crossed borders, and closing them is a huge inconvenience for business and locals who go across the borders to work. The Millers crossed at about 5:00 p.m. after a 45-minute wait. They made it to a La Quinta in Laredo, where they stayed the night. [12:37] The next morning, the Millers drove the nice, easy three-to-four trip home. [12:53] The Millers discovered when they got back to Austin that Marc had lost 15 pounds and his wife had lost 20. In Mexico, other than drives to Guadalajara, they hadn’t put 20 miles on the car. They walked everywhere. If they had something big to bring back, like a sack of kitty litter, they brought a little hand truck to carry it. [12:38] Another reason for the weight loss is that Mexican food has no added sugar and salt. Every kind of food the Millers ate tasted better. Local fruits and vegetables, and local baked goods tasted so good. [14:36] Marc’s blood pressure is back to normal and still improving. Marc is now back at his college graduation weight at age 62 — 170 pounds at just under 6'4". He hasn’t been this healthy in years. [15:05] Marc also noticed how much constant noise there is in Austin from machinery and traffic, contrasted with Ajijic. The pace of life is booming in Austin, and Marc finds he doesn’t like it anymore. Austin has changed dramatically in the 40 years the Millers have lived there. [15:38] It used to be a sleepy little university town with state government. “It ain’t that no more.” [15:44] Marc is healthier than he has been in years. His wife has more stamina than she’s had in years. Marc cannot say what the last four months have done for their health. They are looking forward to going back. [15:58] The Miller’s first concern in Austin was what to do with all their stuff. They rented a 5'x10' room at a small storage facility for about $70 per month. Their goal had been to get rid of everything but — not quite everything. They’re storing a few things they are not sure they want to discard and things they will bring down to Ajijic on their next trip. [16:33] The Millers will leave their bikes for now and bring them down on their next trip. They also have a really nice king-sized bed they will store, just in case they come back to stay. Items they wanted no more, they put up on their local condo Facebook group and on Marc’s regular Facebook page, saying no reasonable offer will be turned down. [17:16] The Millers started selling things for $30 to $50. Whatever is leftover that the Millers do not want, the Salvation Army Austin will have come and picked up by the time this episode is released. [17:35] Marc lists the repairs that were needed before renting the condo — new dishwasher, new seals in the toilet, new knobs for the range, some painting, and general maintenance. [18:31] The Millers went through all their paper photos. They got rid of a lot of them and took the rest to a camera shop to be scanned. They will still keep the scanned photos in paper form as well. [18:48] One of their biggest problems was moving George, their 45-year-old ponytail palm. George is nearly 10 feet tall and 500 pounds and was on the third floor. The condo manager found three guys to move the tree and it was an ordeal. They had to take it out of the pot, which was heavy in itself. They gave the tree to a former neighbor. [19:55] They changed their correspondence address to that of an old family friend they’ve known for over 40 years. They are applying for health insurance. Marc has been approved and Lotus Miller is waiting for approval. Marc tells the premium and deductible for his own policy for a year, which will be much less than his monthly ACA premium. [20:55] Lotus’s policy will be a little more than Marc’s and is going through the approval process, now. [21:05] The Millers have just prepared their 2015 Subaru Outback with new tires and a full-size spare. They had to install a lockable Yakima roof rack for the spare, for about $500. [22:15] Marc tells of going through a fog thicker than any he had driven through in his life. The temperature dropped 30°F immediately, and the low-pressure gauge for the tires popped on. Now Marc is getting an electric tire pump to keep in the vehicle. [23:21] Within 10 days of crossing the border, the cats must go to the vet with all the paperwork needed. [23:36] Marc will get a temporary resident visa for himself. Lotus will get a permanent resident visa for herself. You can’t bring a car in on a permanent visa! The car is in Marc’s name. Their marriage certificate shows a different name for Lotus. [24:18] Lotus changed her first name about 10 years ago. The name on their wedding license needs to be certified by the Mexican government. After The Millers get their marriage license certified by the Mexican government, Marc will get a permanent visa and they will get rid of the car. The Mexican government does not like American cars. [25:01] By the time this episode is released on Monday, the Millers will have stopped at the Mexican Embassy in Laredo to process the visa applications. They will cross the border, go to the IMM office very early and leave for Ajijic on Tuesday morning, making it a two-day trip. [25:36] The key piece is — you do not drive at night in Mexico! You do not! There is livestock on the road, even the toll roads. There are also speed bumps that come up fast that you don’t see at night. Marc will leave Laredo with a full tank of gas. Gas is well over $4.00 in Mexico. The only stops will be for bathroom breaks. [27:01] The Millers are excited to go back. Marc is happy to leave Austin. The stress of getting everything ready and turning it over to the property manager has been really difficult. [27:33] Marc and his wife will be coming back to Austin in early March, as Marc has a speaking gig then in Central Texas. The car is also due for registration in April and a car inspection. Marc shares some travel plans for that time. [28:12] Marc hopes you get a feel for this being an amazing experience and a healthy experience. Having spent five months in Mexico, their 2018 spending expenses are way, way down, probably 60% to two-thirds of 2017’s expenses. They have not lived a frugal lifestyle in Ajijic, Mexico. [29:04] Marc hopes you learned something from this episode! If you have any questions, please go to the Show Notes at CareerPivot.com/Episode-106 and put some comments. Marc will be happy to answer your questions. A lot of people have been following the Millers on this journey, including some visits to see them in Ajijic! [29:36] Susan Lahey and Marc are working on the next edition of Repurpose Your Career, and they are looking for your help. Marc is forming a release team of readers who will get access to pre-release chapters of the book to provide feedback. You can be part of this team by going to CareerPivot.com/RYCTeam where you can sign up. [29:58] When you sign up, you’ll receive the pre-release version of chapters when they become available. What Marc asks in return is for you to provide feedback and be prepared to write a review on Amazon when the book is released. [30:17] Marc and Susan are adding around eight new chapters to the book and re-writing several others. Marc’s goal is to have a chapter on the podcast and to the team every four to six weeks in the coming months. Marc may start a private Facebook group for the team to discuss their thoughts. A PDF of Chapter 1 will be released soon. [31:03] Please go to CareerPivot.com/podcast-survey and take the 2018 Repurpose Your Career podcast survey on SurveyMonkey.com. We've all found ourselves bogged down in life, especially if we're geek collectors of things like DVDs, comic books, videogames, etc. Maybe we find ourselves in an unfulfilling job or relationship? But what are these things actually adding to our lives? More importantly, what are they taking away? Quit Happens | How (and why!) to strategically quit your job, leave your relationship, or part ways with toxic mindsets.

Right before my birthday every year there seems to be a huge revelation that leads to a quit, and I start my next year just a little bit freer and more in alignment with my purpose and passions. This year was no exception, in fact, this year’s quit was HUGE. I quit Capoeira - something that was previously my passion (or so I thought) and a big chunk of my identity.  Listen to hear how after 7 years of training (Capoeira is a Brazilian martial art) I finally realized that something I thought I loved so much wasn't truly my passion...and how I made it through such a significant quit.

We step away from the normal format of the show in order to hold space for the passing of Larry Harvey. I attended my first burn amid much strife in my capoeira life. I had wanted to play in the orchestra that leads the capoeira games, but my low status in the group prevented me from doing so. In capoeira,` your cord (belt) color is a rank like other martial arts, and only the higher cords were allowed to play instruments. But not on the playa. I went to a capoeira class my first day and there were no cords, no hierarchy. When it came time to play, I asked who was going to lead the orchestra. They said whomever could lead...So *I* led. For the first time ever. And I've never looked back. Thanks, Larry, for creating a hierarchy-less paradise for me to find my strength and my home in the orchestra. ******************* Arthur Mamou-Mani... Larry Harvey - you are in our thoughts. The Temple 2018 will be here for you and for the community that you have so deeply inspired and changed for the better. ******************* Amy Vogler…. The result of your little beach bonfire party has changed the course of my life in so many aspects, and exposed me to more love, compassion, & creativity than I thought possible; within the community, and within myself. Thanks for your participation! ******************* Kat Ripley…. R.I.P. Larry Harvey Thank you so much for all you have done for humanity. I think it would be impossible to overstate the positive impact you made across the globe. I don’t know if I can make one one hundredth of an impact on this world as you have, but I promise I will try. ******************* Absinthia Vermut…. I first remember Larry when I was still at Burning Man, two days after the Man burned in 1995. I celebrated my 25th birthday on playa, fell madly in love with Burning Man, and I stayed to clean up. I just couldn't leave! A year earlier, I had moved to San Francisco, a dream I had since I first visited as a young girl. I never dreamed I would find something like Burning Man in an incredible location like Black Rock Desert, but there I was. Home. Two years later, I remember Larry pulling my then boyfriend, Paul Addis, and me into a meeting late one night on Hualapai Playa. We were there with maybe two dozen others as he explained that the sheriff had relieved the gate of its cash, and he needed us to walk around and collect cash donations from participants. Of course, we did. He offered me a lifetime ticket to Burning Man for $500. I was a starving artist and couldn’t afford it, but more importantly, I thought it was a terrible idea and a huge waste of money. There was no way this thing would continue! Turns out Larry was as much of a pitbull with Burning Man as I have been with my absinthe. That was right around the time I started bootlegging absinthe, and Larry was a huge fan, perhaps my biggest. Since his passing, a friend told me that there was a night when Larry, Flash, and Peter were craving absinthe and set out into Black Rock City to find some. To find me. As they wandered through camps asking if Absinthia was camped there, they left a trail of participants asking, “Was that….Larry Harvey?” I have memories of him at the Anon Salons, holding court with a neon green glass in his hand. One memory in particular stands out, where he had five glasses and was quite belligerent. Marian was there and while she was annoyed by his behavior, we also found it hilarious and endearing. A performer named Magenta was there that night and met him on that fifth glass of absinthe, and then wowed us all by spinning in circles with a knife on her scarved head.I once witnessed Larry managing his fame. I was in first camp and saw him on the poop deck. I walked up to say hello, and he said a very formal “Yes, hello” without looking up. A moment later, he did and caught my eye, “OH! Hello dear, how are you?” It was clear that he heard “Hello Larry” often from people he didn’t know. It was interesting to be treated like a stranger and then recognized by a man whom everyone knew. Ah, playa celebrity. But of course, he was more than that. So much more. The moment made me stop and think what it must be like to walk through Black Rock City as Larry Harvey. Have you ever thought about that? The last time I saw Larry was burn night 2017. I was walking back from the burn to Marian’s absinthe bar to serve my absinthe, my burn night tradition. I had just witnessed a man dive into the fire, and I was completely shell shocked. I remember telling Larry this, and he, too, seemed shell shocked. We didn’t have that nice warm welcome that we usually have. It was too intense of an evening for us all.My favorite story of Larry occured burn night in 2015. I arrived at Marian’s pop up absinthe bar, and no one was around. I found a black baseball cap that said, MEOW, in the bar, and put that on without a second thought. I wandered over to first camp to drum up some interest. I walked in, and Larry caught my eye and gave me a huge smile. Now, Larry had never ever flirted with me before, he was always like an uncle to me, my crazy Uncle Larry, but on this night, I was dressed as Marian, with an all black outfit, a long blonde wig, and the last minute addition of the MEOW hat. Perhaps the only night I have ever not worn green on playa, I was Absinthia dressed as Marian serving Absinthia’s absinthe in Marian’s pop up bar. Larry didn’t leave my side all night. He escorted me back to the bar and I served him and many others absinthe that evening. A lot of absinthe. I said, “MEOW” a lot; what else does one say when they are mimicking Maid Marian? Larry told the story of how he had almost been arrested earlier that night during the burn. The Man was taking forever to burn, and Larry was getting worried. He also wasn’t wearing his Hat - I had witnessed him toss it into the crowd at the GLC a few years prior. He just wasn’t as recognizable without it, and beneath the slowly burning Man, a young LEO, as Larry described him, stopped him and asked him what he was doing so close to the Man, with people lying on the ground nearby watching it burn. “I am worried about it falling,” Larry said.“Well, that is not your concern. Get out of this area.”“Listen, son…” Larry started to say.“Son? Don’t you condescend to me! Now leave this area before I have you arrested and taken away!”Larry loved this story and told it several times that evening. We continued drinking absinthe, talking about such things as what to do about the Plug and Play camps, Larry sharing his ideas about building small Temples in the keyholes, and more. When the evening wore down and we all had more than enough absinthe, Larry offered to drive me, still dressed as Marian, home. I was all the way out in Illumination Village at 3 o’clock and A that year, and welcomed the ride. Larry spent about ten minutes debating with himself whether or not to drive his golf cart or his Jeep, and in the end, the Jeep won. He tried to unlock the door with his key, and I had to hold his arm to help him get the key in the lock. I went around and got in the passenger side to see him put a half full glass of absinthe in the cup holder! “Larry! You are driving me home with a glass of absinthe in the cup holder?” “Of course I am, dear, now let’s get going.” He drove out onto the playa and headed to my camp. “OMG LARRY that is a piece of art!” I hollered when a big something jumped out in front of the car. He slowed down and narrowly missed it. When found my camp, he seemed determined to drive me all the way to my door. Now, IllVille is home to a lot of fire art, which means there are propane tanks, gas lines, and art everywhere. A bad place for anyone to drive, but like I said, he really wanted to drive me to my door. We got to a spot where he had to stop, and I jumped out before he could drive any further into dangerous fire art, grabbed my case of absinthe, and gave him a big hug. I told him I loved him. He seemed embarrassed, and turned his Jeep around and drove home. Thank you, Larry. You created a world I never dreamt I would find. Thanks to you, I found my Island of Misfit Toys and a place where I belong. I came to the playa a shy photographer, hiding behind my camera, and there I found my dreams, my crazy absinthe induced green fairy dreams, and I made them a reality. I am a different person now. We all are. Like all of us, you are flawed, you are human, you are loved. You and your friends gave us the landscape to make magic happen. You left one hell of a trace, my friend.Cheers, Absinthia Vermut ******************* Rebekah Waites... I only met him a few times so don’t really have any stories. I just know that he loved Church Trap and talked about it in interviews. Found out after that he carried a picture of it in his journal. Finding that out meant a lot to me. Only story I have was one on his bday at a party at Headquarters. I didn’t know anyone and am a bit shy. Jennifer Raiser invited me and when i got there told me to go say hi to Larry. When I tried to introduce myself he snapped “I just woke up.” So i ran away. Haha! When Jennifer asked me later if I said hi to him, I said I tried to but it didn’t go over very well. So she told me to go say hi again. This time I caught him in the line for tacos and started to say who I was. His response: “who???!” “Larry... it’s me. Rebekah. Rebekah Waites who did Church Trap.” Aaaaaaaand then I got the biggest hug from Larry and we talked for a moment. It was awesome. I’ll never forget that. ******************* Danielle White... Larry Harvey passed into his next journey. Thank you for the amazing growth, change and experience that this incarnation brought to my life. I am eternally grateful.
