It has a life of its own. It shouldn't be kept behind glass. It should be out in front of people. With that emotion passing through.- Jack Barton The biggest bummer about it these days is just how everybody's got a super computer in their pocket, and everybody's addicted to the shit, and unless you engage with social media, people don't know that you're active. - Sam Grisman I never imagined myself becoming a guitarist ever. I never had big aspirations to be a musician or play guitar at all. But I started playing during the pandemic. - Bella Rayne Honestly, I was thrilled to play with all of these musicians, but I have a special place in my heart for the guys from Los Lobos. Yeah. I mean, holy cow. What a thrill. - Jill Simmons From the beginning, I'm grateful. That we've been able to do what we've wanted to do all these years. And for it to come around to where it's at now. Additional topics include the differences between East and West Coast Deadheads, the impact of venue intimacy, and Mattson's reflections on maintaining musical authenticity while honoring the legacy of the Grateful Dead.Quotes From The EpisodeI grew up with improvisation, all the time, hearing it, seeing my father do it, and Miles Davis, Coltrane, playing in the house all the time growing up, so, it just seemed the most natural thing in the world to improvise. - Jeff MatsonThe thing I always heard was that the East Coast audience were a little more vociferous. And, West Coast audience were a little more chill, like “we don't get carried away.” I mean, wherever you come from, if you're a deadhead, you love the music. -Jeff MatsonListen Now:

Forget the necktie and the tool box. Our gift to you this Father's Day is a book…The Book of Dads, to be exact. Here you'll find a collection of stories from Crow's Feet writers that pays tribute to the men who played vitally important roles in their lives. In the “chapters” of this book, there's a wealth of vivid memories. Some of these are happy. Some are sad. Others serve to remind us that while a parent might have loomed larger than life in one's childhood, they might also have exhibited some very human foibles. Betsy Allen and Rand Bishop recall the special ways they found a connection with their fathers in ways both large and small. Bruce Stambaugh, Daniella Mini, Alex Jordan, and Mary McGrath reminisce how, over the years since their youth, they came to understand their dads better—and appreciate them. And finally, Jerry Dunn, Ilana Rabinowitz, and Jane Trombley share the influences their fathers had on them and recognize the lasting legacies they left behind. So pull up a chair, relax, and let us tell you some stories about our dads. Support the Show.
After diving headfirst into their latest pungent challenge, our heroes regroup to plan their next move. An old acquaintance might hold the key to unraveling their recent discoveries. Joel Daniel and special guest Alex Jordan discuss how an app like SonicMixer could be a game-changer in live music. Musicians (artists) are caught between streaming services and the corporatization of music venues. In this episode of Listening Lyrics, Joel discusses an app that works like Airbnb for house shows. It is extremely difficult for a start-up band (or even an established one) to get a show and cut their teeth. Venues are tough to crack, but houses are abundant and could be used for house shows more than they are. The app is easy to use and it works. Joel helped to launch it in Austin last November. In the show he talks about how to get more potential hosts to open their homes to the idea. It's a two-way street. The concerts become a very personal experience for both the artist and the guests. A big plus for artists is that instead of just surviving on what ends up in the tip jar, they walk away not only with new fans, but a source of income to keep going.

How do our dreams shape our reality? Tonight, with the help of scientists, artists, philosophers, and historians, we're sprinkling a little stardust on our understanding of the more-than-human — from fish, to demons and gods. This episode features the words and voices of Lucia Pietroiusti, Filipa Ramos, Alex Jordan, Sophie Lunn-Rockliffe, Rain Wu, Nahum Mantra, Onome Ekeh, Federico Campagna, Yussef Agbo-Ola, and Hatis Noit, recorded at The Shape of a Circle in the Dream of a Fish — a recurrent festival exploring ideas of consciousness, language and the mind across non-human species and beings, initiated in 2018 by the Serpentine Galleries and held in 2022 in partnership with the Galeria Municipal do Porto. With music by Yussef Agbo-Ola, Hatis Noit, Thumbug, and Any-Angled Light.Big thanks to Adam's Electric Sheep Radio co-hosts, Ryder Thomas White & Samantha Ruth, to Kostas Stasinopoulos, and to Arda Studios.— — —Love and strength to everyone affected by wildfires, floods, hurricanes, or other disasters right now. Your City Cast Madison team - Bianca Martin, Dylan Brogan and Molly Stentz - is on the road this week, taking in the Madison area's most famous attractions. We're asking the question… as a local, are these stops worth the hype? It's Day Two, and we're headed to The House on the Rock in Spring Green, Wisconsin. Built by architect Alex Jordan to be a weekend retreat, it has since become one of the most hyped local attractions. The house itself still stands, but is surrounded by an entire complex, a museum of sorts, that you can explore on your own with the price of admission. It houses collections of self-playing musical instruments, a three-story whale and perhaps the largest carousel in the country. Do you have a fun memory from the House on a Rock? We bet you do. Leave us a voicemail at 608-318-3367 or email madison@citycast.fm… and we might play it on the show. We're also on Twitter and Instagram. Also mentioned on the show:
