Trade, Tariffs, and India's Silver Lining

On April 2nd, the U.S. government announced a host of sweeping tariff hikes with every single one of America's trading partners. The aim of the so-called “Liberation Day” tariffs was ostensibly to “rebalance” the global trading system, as some Trump advisors have put it.However, the drastic measure roiled markets and eventually resulted in the President imposing a 90-day pause on most tariffs, with the exception of strategic sectors and imports from China. India, for its part, was slapped with a 26% tariff even as top officials were negotiating a bilateral trade agreement with their American counterparts. While the fate of future tariffs and any side agreements are unknown, the episode raises serious questions about India's global economic strategy. To talk about where India goes from here, Milan is joined on the show this week by Shoumitro Chatterjee. Shoumitro is an Assistant Professor of International Economics at Johns Hopkins-SAIS. His research lies at the intersection of development economics, trade, and macroeconomics, but he has also done seminal work on the role of agriculture in development.Milan and Shoumitro discuss India's surprising export-led success, its underperformance in low-skilled manufacturing, and the country's inward turn post-2017. Plus, the two discuss how India can take advantage of the current global uncertainty and where the politically sensitive agricultural sector fits in.Episode notes:1. These new rules require permits for seven key rare earth elements, creating delays that could ripple through global supply chains. With China controlling nearly 90% of global supply and refining, this move hits American giants like Tesla, Lockheed Martin, and Apple. The U.S. has only one rare earth mine, intensifying the urgency to diversify supply chains. As Bloomberg reports, China's message is clear: if Washington plays tariffs, Beijing plays rare earths. Mehul Choksi Arrested in Belgium; India Pushes for Extradition Fugitive diamond trader Mehul Choksi—accused in the ₹14,000-crore PNB scam—has been arrested in Belgium. Indian agencies, including the CBI and ED, are preparing to travel to Brussels to expedite his extradition. Choksi, who obtained Belgian residency in 2023, is contesting the move on medical and human rights grounds. His lawyer cites poor prison conditions in India and claims the case is political. Belgium has acknowledged India's extradition request, setting the stage for a legal showdown that could mirror past cases like Sanjay Bhandari's. Dr Reddy's Slams Downsizing Rumors Amid Strong Q3 Earnings Dr Reddy's Laboratories has denied reports that it plans to cut workforce costs by 25%, calling the claims “factually incorrect.” Business Standard had reported that high-paid executives and R&D employees were being asked to resign or take voluntary retirement. However, the pharma major insists no such restructuring is happening. Financially, Dr Reddy's delivered a strong Q3 FY25—profit after tax rose 2% YoY to ₹1,413.3 crore, while revenue jumped 16% to ₹8,358.6 crore. Key growth came from India, Emerging Markets, and the Nicotine Replacement Therapy portfolio. EBITDA hit ₹2,298.2 crore, reflecting solid business fundamentals. Tata Capital Files for IPO, Only Third Tata Listing in 25 Years Tata Capital is preparing for a long-awaited IPO, marking the Tata Group's third public listing in a quarter-century, after TCS and Tata Technologies. The move follows an RBI mandate requiring systemically important NBFCs to go public by September 2025. The IPO is expected to raise ₹15,000–₹18,000 crore. Once plagued by bad loans and group-level turbulence, Tata Capital has pivoted under Chairman N. Chandrasekaran and CEO Rajiv Sabharwal, growing its loan book to ₹1.5 trillion. With strong focus on affordable housing and SMEs, the IPO is poised to reshape the NBFC space. OYO Faces FIR Over Alleged ₹22 Crore Revenue Inflation Samskara Resort in Jaipur has filed an FIR against OYO, accusing the travel aggregator of fabricating bookings worth ₹22.22 crore, which triggered a ₹2.66 crore GST notice. Madan Jain, associated with the resort, claims OYO backdated and inflated revenues even before their agreement began in April 2019. Actual bookings via OYO reportedly totaled just ₹10.95 lakh. The FIR names OYO founder Ritesh Agarwal and includes charges of cheating, forgery, and criminal conspiracy. Rajasthan's hotel federation alleges over 20 hotels received similar GST notices, pointing to a broader pattern of grievances against OYO, which is yet to respond.

There's a war for succession going on. Who gets to become the new television? There are two challengers. The first challenger is Youtube.According to Neal Mohan, YouTube CEO, TV screens have officially overtaken mobile as the quote, primary device for YouTube viewing in the US.It is, as Mohan writes in his annual letter from the CEO, an indication that YouTube is the new television. It's interactive and includes things like shorts, podcasts, and live streams alongside sports, sitcoms, and talk shows that people already love.It is getting there organically by adding things like memberships, monetisation tools, partner programs, and super chats, and it's letting creators play with them to create content that takes eyeballs away from linear television. On the other hand, there are streaming companies like Netflix and Jiohotstar, who also want to become the successor for new television, and they do it by owning and producing exclusive content and IP such as live sports, Disney, Marvel, HBO, and a whole lot more. All of this came to a head a couple of days back after Jiohotstar live-streamed its Mahashivratri event. It had a lot of the same elements as Youtube live events.Viewers could switch between temple feeds, listen to mythological narratives or engage in real-time chanting and live Q&A sessions, transforming passive viewing into active participation.Jio Hotstar is redefining live streaming by making shared cultural moments more immersive. To discuss this, hosts Praveen Gopal Krishnan and Rohin Dharmakumar invited two wonderful guests. Our first guest is Swati Mohan, the ex-head of marketing at Netflix India. She's also an independent advisor to many consumer tech companies. She's led large business verticals and has had leadership roles in media companies such as GroupM, Nat Geo, and many others across India and APAC.And our second guest is Vanita Kohli-Khandekar. She has also authored the authoritative book on India's media landscape titled The Indian Media Business. In this episode, we discuss which of these two contenders will become new television. What will YouTube do, and how will it get there? There are hundreds of reports of black-eyed children, often seen in groups of two or more, who ask for permission to enter the person's home or vehicle. Witnesses often report an overwhelming feeling of dread and despair in their presence. What the black-eyed children seek is not known… nor is it known exactly what they are. (Invasion Of The Black Eyed Kids) *** In October of 1943, a U.S. Navy destroyer was supposedly turned invisible and teleported from Philadelphia to Norfolk. But did it really happen? (The Truth Behind The Philadelphia Experiment) *** The Witchcraft Act of 1735 ended the gruesome practice of burning witches at the stake, making it illegal to accuse anyone of having magical powers. Yet in 1944, Helen Duncan was convicted under this very law for fraudulent spiritual activities. Despite her claims of contacting spirits through ectoplasm and even revealing classified naval secrets, she was sentenced to prison. Her trial was one of the last times the Witchcraft Act was used before being replaced in 1951, but her supporters continue to campaign for her pardon. (Britain's Last Witch) *** Once a powerful festival, Dies Sanguinis, or "Day of Blood," honored the Roman goddess of war, Bellona, with animal sacrifices and martial rituals. The festival showcased Rome's military strength and dedication to victory. Although the rise of Christianity and the fall of the Roman Empire eventually ended the festival, its legacy still sheds light on the fascinating nature of ancient Roman culture. (Rome's Day of the Bloody Sacrifice) *** The Dardeen family was found brutally murdered in their home near Ina, Illinois, leaving residents and investigators stumped. She is an India-based media specialist and a contributing editor for Business Standard, where she has written about media and the business of media for over two decades. She also writes for Singapore-based Content Asia. The Media Room, her podcast on all things media and entertainment, is hosted on The Core. She has also authored the authoritative book on India's media landscape titled The Indian Media Business. In this episode, we discuss which of these two contenders will become new television. What will YouTube do, and how will it get there? In this video, I delve into the tax proposals of Trump and Harris regarding businesses. Harris suggests increasing the startup deduction to $50,000, aiming to support entrepreneurs. Trump's plan includes a 20% deduction on net income, benefiting small business owners. No government checks are involved; deductions reduce taxable income. The most significant proposal is the potential permanence of 100% bonus depreciation, aiding real estate investors and business owners.

Indian federalism is encountering some of its biggest challenges since the early years of the republic. Relations between the union government in Delhi and the states are rocky, to put it mildly.India's better-off states are growing increasingly agitated about a system of fiscal federalism in which richer states end up subsidizing poorer, more backward ones. The new Goods and Services Tax (GST) has attracted fresh criticism because its benefits have not been shared equally by all states. And the coming fight over how parliamentary seats will be allocated across states has only added fuel to the fire.To discuss the brewing crisis in Indian federalism, Milan is joined today on the show this week by the economist Arvind Subramanian. Arvind is a senior fellow at the Peterson Institute for International Economics. He also served as the chief economic advisor to the government of India between 2014 and 2018. He recently co-authored a new essay in Economic and Political Weekly, “GST Revenue Performance: Gainers and Losers after Seven Years.”Milan and Arvind discuss the foundations of the GST, its implications for India's federal design, and its revenue implications. Plus, the two discuss growing resentment among India's prosperous states over fiscal transfers, questions about political representation, and the prospects of a new grand federal bargain.Episode notes:1.

(Sursa: Eurotopics)

IN THIS EPISODE: Described as childlike beings with eerie coal black eyes, no iris or pupils, and pale, white skin, a scourge of mysterious black-eyed children have been reported all over the world. Yet even after a confession by Tommy Lynn Sells, the truth is still a mystery. Today's Episode Dr. Raj talks with Kamlesh D. Patel (Daaji), delving into his journey from a pharmacist to an advocate of heartfulness meditation. They explore how he incorporated this practice into his daily routine and went on to initiate a global movement, empowering individuals worldwide to embrace heartfulness. Today's Guest  Born in Gujarat in 1956, Kamlesh D. Patel (Daaji) displayed an early interest in meditation and spirituality. He started Heartfulness Meditation at the age of nineteen while studying to be a pharmacist. Soon after, he met his first Guru, Babuji, the second guide in the Heartfulness lineage. After graduating with honors from L.M. College of Pharmacy in Ahmedabad, Daaji married and moved to New York City. There, he and his wife raised their two sons, while he steadily built a successful pharmacy business. At the same time, Daaji continued to pursue his love of meditation as a devoted disciple of Babuji's successor, Chariji. Over the years, Daaji played an increasingly active role in the Heartfulness Movement, both organisationally and by spreading its message and teaching its method. In 2011, Chariji selected Daaji as his spiritual successor. As the leader of the Heartfulness Movement, Daaji now fulfills the many duties of a modern-day guru, traveling widely and extending his support to seekers everywhere. Daaji firmly believes in nourishing today's youth with practical self-management tools and universal values. Under his guidance, students and faculty in over 2,500 schools, universities, and colleges are now benefitting from a portfolio of value-based self-development programs. As a self-professed student of spirituality, Daaji devotes much of his time and energy to his personal research in the field of spirituality and consciousness, and regularly shares his findings through public speaking engagements, his website, and social media platforms, and in broadcast, print, and digital media. Daaji's articles have appeared in various leading publications including Huffington Post, Chicago Tribune, Times of India, and Business Standard. His well-received Radio City Swaran series, Dil Ki Awaaz, ran for twelve episodes. Daaji advocates bridging ancient tradition with modern scientific understanding and has assembled a team of one hundred scientists to research the physiological and genetic effects of meditation and yogic transmission. As he often says, “You are the experimenter, the experiment, and also its result.” Learn more about Daaji's practice here About Dr. Raj Dr Raj is a quadruple board certified physician and associate professor at the University of Southern California. One of the major themes of India's G20 presidency, which concludes later this year, has been the advancement of an ambitious green transition for the 21st century. If the world's hopes of accelerating a clean, sustainable, just, affordable, and inclusive energy transition are to come to fruition, ensuring the spread of solar power—especially to the poorest parts of the globe—will be essential. Milan's guest on the show this week is tasked with doing exactly this.Dr. Ajay Mathur is the Director General of the International Solar Alliance (ISA), a relatively new international consortium of more than 120 countries. ISA's overarching objective is to foster the efficient consumption of solar energy to reduce the world's dependence on fossil fuels.Dr. Mathur was formerly the Director General of The Energy and Resources Institute and the Director General of India's Bureau of Energy Efficiency. He and Milan discuss the explosive growth in solar power and what that means for India—and the world. They also talk about the promise of green hydrogen, the impediments to solar adoption, and the expansion of mini-grid technology.Episode notes:1. Ajay Mathur, “International finance must take a lead in mobilising solar investments,” Business Standard, September 7, 2023.2. Join us for an inspiring podcast interview with Mosongo Moukwa, a renowned thought leader with 30 years of experience in leadership and organizational change. As President at Hathaway Advanced Materials and a former leader at world-class brands, his insights are invaluable. He recently published his best-selling book "Be a Leader of Significance: Build Your Legacy, Leave an Impact" and I think his insights would be super valuable to your listeners. Mosongo's message isn't another weighty management or leadership theory - it's a fresh approach to showing how leadership shows itself in daily moments and actions to create moments of significance that help others sustain their own personal and professional growth. When you engage, empower, and mobilize the collective energy of your teams, new levels of performance follow, like turning on a light, then another, and another, until the entire room is lit, and Mosongo shares how implementing these practices points to measurable, quantifiable outcomes. Having worked with a wide range of organizations, he's seen the impact of these approaches, from leaders pivoting their thinking, to employees growing more engaged, to productivity shooting through the roof. When an organization is mobilized in new ways, it becomes a powerful creative engine that makes room for extraordinary things to happen, which enhances the process of achieving collective goals and exceeding the loftiest expectations. Most importantly, these changes point the way forward beyond the notion of "achieving better numbers" and into sustained long-term success. Focusing purely on financial deliverables might grow a company's bank accounts, but never grows its true wealth: the collective creativity and passion of its people. Mosongo provides an actionable roadmap demonstrating the power of human connection and belief in our ability to achieve even the most challenging goals by building a culture of confidence and mastering meaningful engagement and communication, which will impact not only employees mind's, but their hearts as well. Lastly, his work has been featured in Business Today, Crain's, and he is a regular contributor to Business Standard.
