From production tools to actual music creation, AI is tearing into every segment of the music industry. The latest fad is the scarily accurate regeneration of artists' voices: from Drake to Kanye West, Michael Jackson to SP Balasubrahmanyam. But the trend has raised excitement and alarm in equal measure. So while AR Rahman has done it the right way in a recent Rajinikanth film: with permissions and proceeds; the music directors recreating SPB's voice have earned themselves a lawsuit. Who owns an artist's regenerated voice?Should voices be patented? What copyright laws cover such products? What was it like preparing Sachin Tendulkar for a press conference? How was it dining with some of cricket's all-time greats? How was it like managing the Indian cricket team on some of the most historic tours in the game? On this special episode of the Sledging Room, get up, close and personal with Amrit Mathur, a well-respected sports journalist who also served as manager of the Indian cricket team for the tour of South Africa in 1992 and several others. Amrit was also a member of PILCOM which was tasked with the organisation of the 1996 World Cup. Moreover, Amrit was also appointed General Manager in the BCCI and the COO of the Delhi Daredevils. Few have seen cricket the way Amrit Mathur has through the many hats he has worn over decades. Not surprisingly, his book Pitchside, is a reflection of the many years spent with the Indian cricket team and the several relationships forged over time. This book is pure pleasure for every cricket fan. It's clean storytelling. There are detailed chapters on India's tour of South Africa in 1992, the 1996 World Cup, the 2002 NatWest Series in England, the 2003 World Cup, the 2004 tour of Pakistan and the IPL. Amrit has weaved the narrative beautifully to engage cricket fans from every generation. With India's World Cup preparation ending on a high, it was a great time to invite Amrit Mathur to the Sledging Room. In the latest episode, we talk to him about his book (a fantastic read) and all things cricket. This is a truly unmissable episode. Tune in! Produced by Anna Priyadarshini Sound mix by Sachin Dwivedi

We discuss the factors that led to this moment, why composer and singer Anirudh Ravichander was poised to be the musician to achieve this, and why the song's rise to the summit was somewhat unique. The audio launch event of the highly anticipated Rajinikanth film Jailer was held last week with plenty of fanfare. However, that did not spare the film from being scrutinised by the censor board. The upcoming action film reportedly underwent 11 cuts, and the filmmakers were asked to shorten the lengths of the violent action scenes before granting it a UA certificate. Jailer will be released in theatres on 10th August.

Marilyn in her white dress, John Wayne in his hat, Rajinikanth in his sunglasses - what are the ingredients that go into making cinematic icons, well, iconic? In this Supercut episode, we try to unpack that and answer why some of these stars continue to burn so bright.
Not the big fancy sporting hubs of Chennai or Delhi, but a town famous for its tourism and historical spectacles, Mamallapuram is hosting the Chess Olympiad. Located about 50-km from Chennai, this is the second big event the Tamil Nadu's coastal town has anchored in recent times. The first being a political one -- an informal summit between Prime Minister Modi and Chinese President Xi Jinping two years ago. Mamallapuram's excellent transport connectivity, handful of luxury star hotels and resorts with beach facing rooms to incorporate influx of VVIPs, and the historical importance worked in favour of the seaport town. Also the relatively calmer environment, as compared to the big cities, meant that players, after the games, would relax in the lap of nature. After the event was pulled out of Russia due to the Ukraine war, the All India Chess Federation (AICF) sniffed an opportunity. With no financial backing or sponsors at the time, the federation went out of its way to show its interest in hosting the event. But, to host an international event of such a scale-- that usually takes years to organise-- the AICF was racing against the time. This is where the state and central government authorities stepped in. The Tamil Nadu government backed the federation by guaranteeing $10 million to put up a bid in the first place. Together, the state and the centre have allocated Rs 100 crore for the event. The Central ministries wasted no time in clearing the visas for players from over 180 countries. India's international standing in the world of chess also helped. In the last eight years, Indian chess grandmasters have more than doubled to 75. India has the world's largest chess-playing population with 33,000 internationally rated players. Despite several controversies and infightings, the Chess federation came out with flying colours in a nurturing long-term Chess ecosystem. The 44th edition of the Chess Olympiad, which is held every two years, has a record participation with 343 teams from 187 countries. Six Indian teams are competing in the Olympiad – three in each section. Five-time world champion Viswanathan Anand opted not to play in the Olympiad and has taken over the mentor role for youngsters in the Indian side. To accommodate over 2,000 players in the mix, the national chess Federation moved proactively at breakneck speed to rope in major sponsors. In addition, the AICF worked out subsidies for national federations, which lacked the resources to send teams. Several international players have taken to social media platforms to laud the arrangements. The organisers have also pulled out all stops and went on a marketing blitzkrieg in making the Olympiad a success and also to take the event deep into India and around the world. Chennai with the iconic Napier Bridge wearing chequered back and white look, a spectacle of an opening ceremony involving A R Rahman and Rajinikanth was held and a ubiquitous mascot Thambi, with folded-hand greetings, is featured everywhere from milk packets to billboards. The sponsors and authorities were also a step ahead by adopting new technologies like virtual reality and artificial intelligence to give an immersive experience to the fans. Tech Mahindra has launched Fan Nxt where users can track the board moves of top players in the event. A successful Chess Olympiad will for sure put India on a high pedestal, showcasing its abilities to host such events of scale, and hopefully more such events will follow. It will also help make chess become more mainstream.
To restore parity after discussing an old Kamal Haasan film we thought we must do a Rajinikanth film. Ok, that's not the reason but we felt this Rajinikanth film must be discussed. This is 1978 and Rajinikanth's early years in Tamil cinema. It's the year he stamped his authority and signaled the coming of a legend of Indian cinema. Mullum Malarum, directed by Mahendran with cinematography by Balu Mahendra and music by Ilaiyaraaja had Rajinikanth, Shoba, Sarath Babu and Jayalaxmi. The film was based on a novel by Uma Chandran. A seminal film in not just the crew's and Rajinikanth's careers but to Tamil cinema itself, the film informed the direction Tamil cinema took from there on and also colored the future characters played by the superstar. To talk about all that and more we invited two of the biggest fans of the film. Shakila Zamboulingame, more popularly known by her account 1916tamilcinema on Instagram which contains some of the most original takes on everything Tamil cinema. Joining her is journalist Kavitha Muralidharan who is participating in our podcast for the third time. Participants: Aditya Anantha Shakila Zamboulingame Kavitha Muralidharan Edited by ABVan
The recent big announcement in Tamil cinema is the collaboration of director Nelson (Kolamaavu Kokila, Doctor, yet to release Beast with Vijay) with Rajinikanth. Since the time Rajinikanth collaborated twice with Pa. Ranjith and once with Karthik Subbaraj, there have always been calls for the biggest stars - meaning male actors who guarantee huge weekend openings at box office - to work with young, promising filmmakers making a different kind of cinema, themselves a coterie that came into being around 2008 in Tamil cinema. The list of filmmakers has only grown since then and it's been a great decade. From calls for Kamal Haasan at his height of stardom and experimentation to work with some of them to Rajini working with them and Vijay collaborating with Lokesh Kanagaraj, and Ajith with H. Vinoth (and we've had more than a decade of Dhanush-Vetrimaaran), fans believe this is a treat. Currently we have upcoming films like Lokesh Kanagaraj's Vikram with Kamal Haasan, Vijay's Beast with Nelson, Vetrimaaran's Vaadivaasal with Suriya and Pa Ranjith's film with Vikram to name a few. At The Other Banana, we wondered how healthy these pairings are for Tamil cinema? An industry notorious for the way it manages production and budgets, do the numbers make sense and does the quality suffer? What is the equation between the star actor and the filmmaker? What do they get out of each other and are they satisfied? Who are the biggest stars today, who were the stars we thought could take Tamil cinema to great heights in 2005 and where are they today? What do distributors feel about this subject? Do the filmmakers matter to them the way they do for fans? To talk about all these things and more, reporter and journalist Subha Rao joined us. Subha has covered Tamil cinema for close to twenty years now and she has been at the forefront from the days of Rajini-Kamal to today's Ajith-Vijay. Young kids might find it hard to believe but there was a time when Ajith used to give interviews and Subha has interviewed him among others like Vikram et al. We've linked to some of her recent and past works before. She comes armed with a wealth of knowledge and experience and stories from distributors and filmmakers and what they think about this topic. Listen on. Participants: Aditya Subha Anantha Ashoka Edited by Ashoka Show Notes: Subha's Ajith interviews from back in the day here and here. How about some nostalgia for 90s kids? @complicateur, @gradwolf and @ABVan come together to talk about the superhit cult favorite of all Tamil cinema fans and importantly, Captain Vijaykanth fans - written by Mani Ratnam & directed by K Subash in 1990 Chatriyan. Including non-cop films like Rajinikanth's Baasha. Not your usual movie review. How, you ask? Listen on.
