Every year the American Sportfishing Association hosts ICAST, the world's largest tackle trade show. At the event, rod, reel, line, lure and accessories manufacturers unveil their latest and greatest products. These new products can then be entered in one of several categories in the hopes of winning a new product award. All of the various award winners are then placed in consideration for the coveted Best in Show award. In 2024 PENN, a longtime rod and reel manufacturer based in Philadelphia, took home the Best in Show award for its Fathom Electric reel, the first electric reel with an integrated battery. PENN is owned by Pure Fishing, which also owns Berkley, Abu Garcia, Fenwick, Ugly Stik, Pflueger, Plano, Frabill, Stren and several other brands. To get a better understanding of how much research and design goes into product development, we sat down with PENN Senior Category Manager Ben Joyce and Capt. Rush Maltz, a Florida Keys-based PENN ambassador and host of a fishing television show. Subscribe to Anglers Journal Magazine at AnglersJournal.com Sign up for our free newsletter

Show Notes: https://wetflyswing.com/604 Presented By: Yellowstone Teton Territory, Skwala, TroutRoutes Today's episode focuses on an important organization helping to generate billions of dollars to protect our fish species. Join me as I chat with Connor Bevan, the Inland Fisheries Policy Manager at the American Sportfishing Association. Hear how partnerships on Capitol Hill shape the future of fish species preservation. Today you will also find out how you can lend your voice to this cause and ensure our fish populations will thrive for generations. Plus, we'll also take a thrilling ride to ICAST—the world's largest sportfishing event this July in Florida! Show Notes with Connor Bevan on American Sportfishing Association. 2:00 - Connor's fishing adventures began in Northern California with his dad. Connor also enjoys fly fishing on the Bow River in Calgary and the Delaware River on the East Coast. The American Sport Fishing Association (ASA) The ASA is the leading trade association for the recreational fishing industry. They advocate for healthy fisheries and science-based policies. Their efforts contribute to the US economy, with an annual impact of $148 billion. 8:00 - ASA deals with a wide range of issues, but one of their major focuses is reauthorizing the America's Conservation Enhancement Act (ACE Act). 10:30 - ASA is a link between the sportfishing community and Capitol Hill. They leverage the community's voice to ensure they have a nationwide appeal. 13:00 - Connor says that while there is a common understanding of the need for healthy fisheries, ASA acknowledges that Congress needs to balance various priorities. It is important to educate decision-makers on the impact of what they do on water quality, fishing, and overall environmental health. What You Can Do to Help 15:27 - Connor suggests several ways: Get involved with Keep America Fishing. This is their advocacy platform for anglers to weigh in on different issues both on national and regional levels. Share any local issues or concerns with ASA. Connor says they are always interested in hearing what's going on at the local level. Become an active member of the community. What is the ICAST? 17:00 - The ICAST is the world's largest sportfishing industry trade show. It's where you can see all the latest products, innovations, and trends in the industry. This year's ICAST 2024 will be in Orlando, Florida from July 16th to July 19th. 19:13 - Connor says that fly fishing's presence at ICAST is growing. Last year they introduced a dedicated floor space for fly companies, and they saw a lot of interest. 26:37 - One of the American Sportfishing Association's big focuses over the last several years has been taking a more preventative look at aquatic invasive species. The fishing and boating industry launched a Blue Ribbon Commission to improve preventive and management strategies for these invasive species. 28:18 - The MAPLand Act requires federal agencies to standardize and digitize maps they hold within the agencies. ASA supports the MapWaters Act to similarly direct federal agencies to digitize and standardize that mapping information. A Day in the Life at Capitol Hill 35:18 - Connor says that every day is different for him. He spends a lot of time in meetings with legislative staff. Travel is a big part of the job. Connor attends trade shows and conducts site visits. He also coordinates regularly with their members to discuss issues affecting their businesses. 36:54 - Excise taxes are fees imposed on the sale of fishing gear like rods, reels, and even marine fuel. These funds are then distributed to state agencies based on a specific formula. Show Notes: https://wetflyswing.com/604

I first became aware of the issue concerning Atlantic Right Whales through the American Sportfishing Association's social media outlets. Some guys go the extra mile to accommodate their fans and the media. Maryland's Bryan Schmitt is one of those pro anglers. He graciously gave us this interview while practicing for an important tournament, while he was stuck under a marina canopy in a driving rainstorm. How cool is that? This young man is really good. In just his second season on the Elite Series, Bryan had three Top 10s, including his victory at the 2021 Guaranteed Rate Bassmaster Elite at Lake Champlain. His second Elite victory just occurred on the Mississippi River out of LaCrosse, Wisconsin. In addition to being one of the busiest fishermen in pro bass fishing, he spends his free time guiding for saltwater stripers on the Potomac River. Give Bryan Schmitt a listen, if you will.Dan Johnston from St. Croix joins us to talk some more about fall fishing. Is this the best time of the year to fish? What exactly is the “master plan?” Fishing can be more complicated than some people think!Mike Leonard, Vice President Government Affairs at American Sportfishing Association joins us to talk about some important things his group is working on. This is important stuff and we thank them for their constant efforts.

We use the term “hot stick” quite a bit. Our featured guest isn't just a “hot stick,” Oklahoman Jason Christie is a “nuclear stick.” He won the Bassmaster Classic earlier this year on Lake Hartwell. He follows that up with a huge six-figure win on Lake Chickamauga this month. How does he do it? Can anyone beat him? Will he ever cool off? Listen to Jason Christie explain his hot roll. We welcome Connor Bevan for his first appearance on our show. He is the Inland Fisheries Policy Manager at the American Sportfishing Association. Listen to Connor explain his very important job.

Bassmaster Elite pro Chris Zaldain and his partner, Captain Ryan Rickard just won the Yamaha Bassmaster Redfish Cup Championship presented by Skeeter out of Port Aransas, Texas this past week. Zaldain never fished for the feisty redfish before, but it didn't take him long to fall in love with these stubborn brutes. Incredibly, one of Zaldain's competitors in the big tournament was his wife, Trait Zaldain. How did that work out at home? We find that out along with many other interesting fishing facts from one of the sport's top pros and one of the nicest guys around. Dan Johnston from St. Croix is with us to talk about the use of electronics when it comes to ice fishing. Mike Leonard, Vice President of Government Affairs at the American Sportfishing Association is with us to give an update on what his incredible organization has been doing for all of us lately.
The Bassmaster Classic at Lake Ray Roberts in Fort Worth, Texas is just around the corner and we’ll preview the event with our good friend, Ken Duke from Fishing Tackle Retailer magazine. Ken Duke is a virtual human encyclopedia of bass fishing information and knows the Classic better than anyone. We’ll even be able to pry an opinion out of Mr. Duke as to who the 2021 Bassmaster Classic winner is going to be. It’s warming up, so Dan Johnston from St. Croix joins us for some summer fishing tips. Frank Sinatra’s not the only “Chairman of the Board.” St. Croix’ Jesse Simpkins is the Chairman of the Board of the American Sportfishing Association and they have an awful lot going on to talk about.
Patrick Walters is on a roll! He remains one of the hottest sticks in the world of professional bass tournament fishing. He finished 2020 with a huge victory at the Toyota Texasfest. 2021 found Patrick returning to the legendary Lake Fork to get nosed out in last week’s Bassmaster Elite. How do you catch over 100 pounds of bass in a tournament and not get handed the big trophy? It just doesn’t seem fair, does it? Walters is ranked 7th in the entire world by Bassfan and he is just a hair behind Seth Feider in the 2021 B.A.S.S. Angler of the Year competition. Listen and let Patrick Walters teach you a few things about catching big bass. What has the American Sportfishing Association been doing for us lately? Vice President of Governmental Affairs, Mike Leonard, joins us to explain what is going on. Dan Johnston from St. Croix joins us to talk about all the new people who are taking up fishing. How do we hook them? How do we reel them in? No catch-and-release here, my friends!
This week on America Outdoors Radio we catch up with well known hunting personality Ron Spomer and find out where he's been hunting deer and pheasant as of late and how those hunts went. If you are a quail hunter you'll want to hear about the best states to hunt bobwhite, gambel's and valley quail from Chad Love, the Editor of the Quail Forever Journal. Danielle Cloutier with the American Sportfishing Association shares good news on the fishing and conservation front as the Drift Net Modernization Act is about to be signed into law and Captain Greg Verm with Fishing Galveston TX charters gives us a fishing report from the Gulf Coast. http://www.americaoutdoorsradio.com
This guy came out of an early retirement from professional fishing to rejoin the FLW Toyota Series this year. Good move, Chris Malone! You just won the championship worth $245,000. This guy is a truly great fisherman and also one of the nicest guys around. Listen to his story about what he is doing for one of his partners next year and I am sure you will agree. Mike Leonard, VP of Governmental Affairs for the American Sportfishing Association stops by to tell us what the ASA is up to. Dan Johnston from St. Croix joins us to discuss how new techniques affect rod selection.
In the five years I have spent as part of the boating industry, I have often tried to put into words how impactful boating can be for creating memories, sharing experiences, and just spending quality time with family and friends enjoying the beauty of being on the water. In that time, I don’t think I have ever done it as effectively as Jesse Simpkins does day in and day out. Jesse is the Director of Marketing for St. Croix Rods and was recently named the Chairman of the Board of the American Sportfishing Association. You can tell even from this short conversation that Jesse eats, sleeps and breathes fishing, and loves sharing it with others. From conservation efforts to ensure strong fisheries, to improving rod technology making the experience more enjoyable, access to fishing is a major focus for Jesse in both his product and advocacy roles. We discussed Jesse’s first fishing experiences on a farm pond, his evolution into the serious angler he is today, great products coming out of St. Croix (and what goes into them), and some of the important advocacy issues the industry is tackling around Conservation. Enjoy!
They call our main guest, Miles Burghoff, “Sonar.” Is that because he is so good with his electronics or because his father is Gary Burghoff who played “Radar” O’Reilly in both the “M*A*S*H” movie and television show. We’ll ask Sonar about that as well as get into good discussions on lithium ion batteries and the not technique know as Ned rigging! This one is a lot of fun. Dan Johnston from St. Croix talks about end of season tackle maintenance. Jesse Simpkins, newly elected Chairman of the Board of the American Sportfishing Association joins us to recap the ASA’s recent Sportfishing Summit.
Dave Kranz from the WeFishASA Podcast recently visited with Fish House Nation Podcast host Chris Larsen. Topics include the American Sportfishing Association, fishing podcasts, and how COVID-19 has affected the fishing supply chain. For more fishing information, visit https://catchcover.com/
Bassmaster Elite pro, Chad Morgenthaler joins us to cover a number of important subjects. Chad was a long-time fire department member, so he is qualified to discuss today's pandemic. He is also very heavily involved in a number of conservation efforts that aim to help fishing and water quality across the country. Listen to a great interview with a very intelligent and personable angler. John Stillwagon from the American Sportfishing Association joins us to explain what the ASA is doing to help keep anglers fishing during these trying times. Dan Johnston from St. Croix explains the right times for using spinning gear and the right times for using baitcasting equipment.
Mike Iaconelli and Pete Gluszek get on the line with Glenn Hughes, The President of The American Sportfishing Association. Glenn talks about how Keep America Fishing and himself are working to keep boat ramps and bodies of water accessible by anglers all around the country during these crazy times.
Understanding the Economics of Hunting and Shooting with Rob Southwick and Jim Curcuruto – Season 3 Episode 6 – March 30 This episode of Talking Mule Deer is focused helping to understand the economic impact of the hunting and shooting have on conservation and why that’s so important. Rob Southwick, a natural resource economist who runs Southwick Associates, and the National Shooting Sports Foundation's Jim Curcuruto talk about what they are doing to take participation and spending data and make it relevant to the public. Hunters and target shooters spend billions of dollars every year in pursuit of their pastime (we’ll tell you how much!) – but when you factor the economic ripple effect for each dollar spent that impact is even greater, particularly in the rural communities where we hunt and fish. Rob and Jim also work with groups like the Congressional Sportsmen’s Foundation and American Sportfishing Association to put those numbers in context with other mainstream industries and share that information with elected officials and the media. We discuss about how this spending goes back into state wildlife conservation – and increasingly for state-run shooting ranges – through excise taxes on certain hunting and shooting products through the Federal Aid in Wildlife Restoration Act of 1937 (also known as Pittman-Robertson Act) Program. Finally, Jim talks about how NSSF is working with state wildlife agencies and the shooting sports industry to “Partner with a Payer” so that industry staff can understand what states are doing with the taxes they pay, and state agency staff can understand more about the manufacturing of guns and ammunition. He also talks about recent research that shows there’s a lot of interest in the general public about learning how to shoot and what three things might help get them out on the range.
The America's Conservation Enhancement (ACE) Act is moving closer to becoming law. What does it mean and how does it affect Canada such as keeping invasive carp out of the Great Lakes? What about lead fishing tackle? The American Sportfishing Association says the Act is a positive development for the U.S. $125 billion recreational fishing economy that supports over 800,000 jobs. The National Wildlife Federation is also supports the ACT --– or at least mostly.Link below to hear Lawrence Gunther speak with Collin O'Mara, CEO and President of the National Wildlife Federation, to gain perspective about the ACE Act and recent Clean Water Act rollbacks on this episode of Blue Fish Radio:Link below for more about the ACE Act and what the American Sportfishing Association has to say:https://asafishing.org/advocacy/recreational-fishing-wins-bipartisan-support-from-u-s-senate-committee/Link below for the NWF's position on the recently announced US Clean Water Act rollback:https://www.nwf.org/Latest-News/Press-Releases/2020/01-23-20-Clean-Water-Act

In this episode we have on Liz Ogilvie, the VP & Chief Marketing Officer at the American Sportfishing Association (ASA), to discuss the "60 in 60" campaign, the biggest challenges we face as a country as fishermen, the biggest opportunities, and a deep dive into everything that the American Sportfishing Association is doing to further fishing opportunities in America.
A lifelong fisherman and boating enthusiast, Glenn Hughes was named president of the American Sportfishing Association in April 2018, joining the association in 2013 as Vice President for Industry Relations. Prior to joining ASA, Glenn spent more than 20 years in central Florida as VP/Group Publisher of the Bonnier Marine Group. The American Sportfishing Association is the trade association that represents the interests of the sportfishing industry and the entire recreational fishing community.
In Episode 12 of District of Conservation, Gabriella is joined by Allen Luck of American Sportfishing Association live in Old Town Alexandria. Allen serves as Digital Director at the trade organization and runs their "Keep America Fishing" initiative. He also is a tournament bass angler. Allen discusses his work with ASA, discusses the status of the Modern Fish Act, talks about his recent "catch of a lifetime", why shows like Mike Iaconelli's "Fish My City" can inspire more anglers to fish in urban areas, how to continue fishing participation, and how listeners could connect with him. Slop fishing, frog fishing, call it what you will. We are talking about hauling in big bass through heavy cover. It's not a technique for the timid. It is a technique that has earned an awful lot of money for the master of frog fishing, the one-and-only Ish Monroe. Give us a listen and Ish will tell you exactly how to do it. Mike Leonard, Conservation Director for the American Sportfishing Association has some great news that ought to put a smile on the faces of all fishermen across the country. Dan Johnston from St. Croix talks about the Triple Crown! Croix won the best new rod award in in all three categories down at the big ICAST show in Orlando.
ASA Conservation Director Mike Leonard On Tuesday, June 26, 2018, the U.S. House of Representatives was scheduled to vote on H.R.200, more commonly known as the Modern Fish Act. Due to necessary action on other issues, they postponed the vote until July 11. Because of this postponement, we rallied the troops to bring you a special bonus episode dedicated entirely to the Modern Fish Act and what you need to know and do about it. Mike Leonard, Conservation Director of the American Sportfishing Association joined us to give us an in-depth, but wonderfully understandable description of H.R. 200 and it's potential impact on recreational fishing in the United States. It's a short conversation, but a necessity for all anglers who are interested in protecting recreational fishing. Here are some points of interests for you regarding the Modern Fish Act: In summary, H.R. 200 revises and reauthorizes through FY2022 the Magnuson-Stevens Fishery Conservation and Management Act (MSA).* Magnuson-Stevens was signed into law in 1976, and has adversely affected recreational angling for several years. The Modern Fish Act: Requires periodic reviews of mixed-use fisheries allocations (i.e. those fished by both the commercial and recreational sectors) in the South Atlantic and Gulf of Mexico. It’s a no-brainer that the way a public resource is divvied up should be periodically examined, but that is not happening now. Clarifies that regional fishery management councils and NOAA Fisheries can implement management approaches such as harvest rate management that have been used successfully in some regions but that other regions have not even considered. Requires a National Academy of Sciences study of how Limited Access Privilege Programs (conveniently nicknamed “catch share” programs) in mixed-use fisheries could be improved to reduce user conflicts, and places a hold on implementing any new Limited Access Privilege Programs until the study’s results are public. Revises the rebuilding timeline requirement to ensure the timeframes are based on the biology of a depleted fishery, not an arbitrary 10-year rebuilding timeline. Anyone who supports science-based management should prefer this approach. Authorizes the use of multi-year and multi-species annual catch limits, which is simply a codification of recent updates to NOAA Fisheries guidelines. Requires NOAA Fisheries to respond if a state, regional fishery management council or interstate marine fisheries commission objects to an exempted fishing permit providing more clarity to the approval process. Requires a study of how third-party data, such as state-collected data through electronic reporting systems — e.g. iSnapper in Texas, La Creel in Louisiana, Tails ‘n Scales in Mississippi, Outdoor AL in Alabama and iAngler in Florida — could improve fisheries data. For many offshore fisheries, the federal program that estimates angler harvest — the Marine Recreational Information Program (MRIP) — does not provide data at the level of accuracy or timeliness needed for basic management, much less in-season management of various fisheries. Tells NOAA Fisheries to implement the recommendations of the recent National Academy of Sciences review of MRIP and to follow up on key questions raised in the report, for example whether/how management could be better adapted to align with available data. Jeff Angers, "Modern Fish Act 101" Since the vote has been postponed until July 11, we encourage all anglers, regardless of where you're located, to contact your representative and urge them to pass the Modern Fish Act. As Mike told us, environmentalist groups are lobbying diligently to have this bill voted down. We need to be heard on this issue! Keep America Fishing has provided a very helpful page designed to get you in touch with your representative quickly and tell them you want them to pass the Modern Fish Act. Contact them HERE

The U.S. “Modernizing Recreational Fisheries Management Act” seeks to apply modern management approaches, science and technology to guide decision-making over saltwater recreational fishing. Lawrence Gunther speaks with Mike Leonard, Conservation Director for the American Sportfishing Association, and learns more about plans to increase access to saltwater recreational fishing opportunities along the U.S. coastline. The ASA hopes the new Act will raise the status of recreational anglers to be on par with commercial fishers.
The tradeshow director for the American Sportfishing Association casts comments on the activity’s popularity, and trends in fishing.
