This week's feature is a rough one, given the age of one of the victims and how preventable his death was. 20 years after his tragic killing, we look at both the murder of one-year-old Zachary Turner as well as the killing of his father, Andrew Bagby. We also explore the tireless efforts of Andrew's friends and family to make sure that their deaths resulted in reform to help prevent others from suffering a similar fate. BUT FIRST! We play with Chat GPT and explore current crimes in This Week in Murder! Dr. Shirley Turner wreaked havoc on the lives of many, most notably, terrorizing the Bagby familiy. Turner would murder their only son, Andrew, and grandson Zachary in acts of selfishness and entitlement. What drove this woman to commit such atrocious acts against her boyfriend and her infant son? What, if anything, could have been done to stop her from spiraling in this way? On this episode, Michelle and her good friend Amy discuss the murders of Andrew and Zachary, the signs and symptoms of Borderline Personality Disorder (BPD), and how this all relates to the Depp v. Medical providers often become romantically involved with other medical providers. Not many understand the demands and emotions tied to the profession of medicine, so in many cases its natural to be drawn to those in similar circumstances. Much like an episode of Grey's Anatomy, drama plays a role too with jealousy, insecurity, lies, violence. And sometimes murder, a reflection of the dark potential of the human soul. Today's story is the case of Shirley Turner, Andrew Bagby, and their son Zachary. When Andrew Bagby broke it off with Shirley Turner on November 3, 2001, he could not have known the devastation that was waiting for him and his family. When Shirley allegedly travelled over 1000 miles to confront and murder Andrew in cold blood, this is just the beginning of the heartbreak for the Bagby family. As this story unfolds, it emphasizes a tragic example of how the Canadian child protective system and the Canadian Justice system completely failed Andrew, his son Zachary, and their families.FIND US ON SOCIAL MEDIA:Instagram: @crimefamilypodcastTwitter: @crimefamilypod1Facebook: Crime Family PodcastEmail: crimefamilypodcast@gmail.comEPISODE RESOURCES:The Crimes of Shirley Turner:https://www.theracketonline.com/main/shirley-turner-part-one https://www.thetelegram.com/news/provincial/after-newfoundland-woman-killed-their-son-and-grandson-california-couple-seeks-to-improve-bail-laws-393895/ Dear Zachary: A letter to a son about his father. When was the last time you had a truly cathartic film experience? Many people would respond, "When I saw Dear Zachary," Kurt Kuenne's 2008 documentary about the murder of his friend Andrew Bagby. Dan and Mike talk about why--besides its subject--the film affects viewers so viscerally and profoundly. How does "the buffer of fiction" shield us as we watch dramatizations, rather than documentaries? Give it a listen and see if you agree with the single-sentence text Dan sent Mike after he saw this for the first time. In this episode we discuss one of the most emotional cases we've ever done. "Dear Zachary" is a documentary done by Kurt Kenne, where he goes on a mission to bring his late friend Andrew Bagby back to life in the form of a cinematic scrapbook, in order to show Andrews unborn son, what an amazing person his father was. Sometimes passion leads to obsession, and sometimes obsession leads to murder.
Ethics and truth in the land of documentary come under the microscope in our discussion of Dear Zachary: A Letter to a Son About His Father. Filmmaker Kurt Kuenne's love letter to his childhood friend, Andrew Bagby, is a sensational and moving film that you should know as little as possible about before watching. It's exceptionally effective, built out of a combination of interviews, home footage, still photos and more, masterfully edited to generate emotional affect - but despite its qualities, there are real issues fundamental to its form. It's a hybrid of two types of film that find themselves in competition here: it's a documentary, a form about openness and truth; and a thriller, withholding information until it reshapes everything you've learned so far. It's a tension that may well be impossible to avoid - to resolve it might be to totally change Dear Zachary from the deeply personal, passionately made film it is. The story Dear Zachary tells is powerful, moving and utterly gripping, and the conversation to which it will lead you is rich and illuminating. We recommend it without reservation, even though we have serious reservations about it. Recorded on 14th March 2021.

Both the US and Canada would be shaken by the senseless murder of Andrew Bagby in 2001. We like to believe that cases with evidence as straight-forward and clear cut as this begin and end simply in the legal system with the necessary consequences delivered to the perpetrator. However, this case is one of the most convoluted and confusing, covered with injustice and senseless tragedy. It would remain in headlines for nearly a decade, sparking challenge and change for not only the lives involved, but also the legal system itself. It's a remarkable story of how we cannot control what happens to us, but we can choose to decide how it will shape us, finding a purpose for our pain and creating our own hope in the darkest hours. Dr Shirley Turner did not appreciate being broken up with by fellow doctor, Andrew Bagby… so she shot and killed him in November of 2001. Our most requested episode to date, and it was a doozy! But don't worry, we found a way to laugh through our rage. In 2001, Dr. Andrew Bagby was shot dead by jealous ex-girlfriend Dr. Shirley Turner. Shortly thereafter, Bagby's friends and family were hocked to learn that Turner was pregnant with Bagby's son. Hoping to create a film that would serve as both a memorial to Bagby and an introduction to the father the boy would never know, Bagby's bwst friend Kuenne quickly began production on a film celebrating the life of his late friend. Meanwhile, upon learning that Turner had fled to Newfoundland, Bagby's devastated parents uprooted their entire lives and relocated to the easternmost providence of Canada in order to fight for the custody of their newborn grandson, Zachary. However, the Canadian government freed Turner on bail and she maintained custody of Zachary as she awaited extradition to the United States. The situation took a devastating turn during that crucial time and tragedy ensued.
