This week, we read Luke 2:21-38. The baby Jesus has been born just a week prior, and our reading today is scaffolded by the Jewish rituals that surround his birth. We wonder about the role of ritual in our lives, and about the very different ways that Simeon and Anna, two individuals who seem very close to God indeed, navigate the passing days of their own lives – one in constant ritual devotion, one out in the world awaiting the Divine pull to the Temple.  And as readers in a world where Jews and Christians are sometimes defined in opposition to each other, it seemed important to take in the centrality of Jewish practice in Luke's rendition of things. The infighting later is real. But for now, this child is called both a revelation to the Gentiles and a glory for the people Israel.

After Zacharias gives his praise and prophesy about the Jesus the Messiah in verses 67-75, he turns his attention to his newborn son, John. I can imagine the excitement in the room as the family, friends and neighbors of Zacharias and Elizabeth are gathered around them and they are hearing Zacharias speak for the first time in nine months. A wonderful miracle has taken place with them having a child in their old age. Zacharias is proclaiming that the Messiah has come bringing hope and salvation to the people of Israel! But what about this newborn baby John. What is he going to do? What part does he have in the coming and revelation of the Messiah?   It is as if Zacharias looks down on this beautiful baby in the arms of his wife and speaks directly to him. “And you child….”. Then he proceeds to tell him that he would be called “the prophet of the Highest”. This was prophesied centuries earlier by Isaiah to sinful nation telling them that one day they would find comfort in their coming Messiah.  "Comfort, yes, comfort My people!" Says your God. "Speak comfort to Jerusalem, and cry out to her, That her warfare is ended, That her iniquity is pardoned; For she has received from the LORD'S hand Double for all her sins." The voice of one crying in the wilderness: "Prepare the way of the LORD; Make straight in the desert A highway for our God” (Isaiah 40:1-3; John 1:23).   Four hundred years earlier the prophet Malachi also had proclaimed in the last book of the Old Testament: "Behold, I send My messenger, And he will prepare the way before Me. And the Lord, whom you seek, Will suddenly come to His temple, Even the Messenger of the covenant, In whom you delight. Behold, He is coming," Says the LORD of hosts” (Malachi 3:1). John would become known as John the Baptizer preaching to the people down by the Jordan River (John 1). He prepared the way for the ministry of Jesus with this message of and baptism of repentance.   When Jesus showed up at the Jordan River thirty years later to begin His three years of ministry, John saw Him coming and proclaimed, “Behold the Lamb of God who takes away the sin of the world” (John 1:29). John went on to say: “And I have seen and testified that this is the Son of God" (John 1:34).   Zacharias went on to say that John would tell the people that Jesus would “Give knowledge of salvation to His people by the remission of their sins” (v. 78).  Remission means "to send away, to dismiss, as a debt." All of us are in debt to God because we have broken His law and failed to live up to His standards (Luke 7:40-50). Furthermore, all of us are spiritually bankrupt, unable to pay our debt. But Jesus came and paid the debt for us (Ps. 103:12; John 1:29).   This all because of the “tender mercy of our God, with which the Dayspring from on high has visited us” (vv. 78-79). It would be the dawning of a new day in the world. Dayspring means "sunrise." The people were sitting in darkness and death, and distress gripped them but when Jesus came He brought light, life, and peace. (Matt. 4:16).   Instead of enjoying a comfortable life as a priest, John lived in the wilderness, disciplining himself physically and spiritually, waiting for the day when God would send him out to prepare Israel for the arrival of the Messiah. People like Simeon and Anna (Luke 2:25-38) had been waiting for this day for many years, and soon it would come.   Today, God calls us to believe His Good News. Those who believe it experience His joy and want to express their praise to Him. It is not enough for us to say that Jesus is a Savior, or even the Savior. With Mary, we must say, "My spirit hath rejoiced in God my Savior" (Luke 1:47).   Like John, today we are also called to “prepare the way of the Lord”, by calling our family, friends, neighbors, and anyone who will listen, to repentance and salvation by sharing the “Good News of Jesus”!   God bless!

The child grew and became strong, filled with wisdom; and the favor of God was upon him. In these few words, Luke shares a kind of epilogue of the birth narrative of Jesus. It shows that Mary and Joseph were faithful, that they returned to live in their hometown of Nazareth, and that Jesus grew in body and spirit and wisdom under God's favor. But of the prophetess Anna Luke is careful to describe how she lived her life, as she "worshiped night and day with fasting and prayer," and how she responded at seeing the Holy Family: "And coming forward at that very time, she gave thanks to God and spoke about the child to all who were awaiting the redemption of Jerusalem." She came forward at that very time. The present is all she had, and in that moment she gave thanks to God and spoke about the child Jesus, the coming of the Savior. God, help me understand that in fasting, prayer, and worship, Anna made herself attentive to recognize the redemption of Jerusalem, the coming of the Messiah. Luke says that she never left the temple. Give me the grace, Lord, to be attentive to you, to watch for your coming. In recognizing you in the gift of the present moment, how can I do anything but give you thanks, as Anna did, at that very time. Half the battle, the spiritual battle, is remaining vigilant. Saint John says in the first reading that the world and its enticement are passing away. Help me today be steadfast in hearing and doing your will. From the responsorial psalm: "Give to the LORD, you families of nations, give to the LORD glory and praise; give to the LORD the glory due his name! Let the heavens be glad and the earth rejoice!" Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit, as it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be, world without end. Amen. --- Support this podcast: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/lectio-divina-daily/support

Why does God make us wait? What happens to us in the time of waiting is just as important as what we are waiting for. Throughout Scripture, God commands others to wait for His timing. Oftentimes, we want God's blessings but we don't want his timing. Today, we take a look at the people who were there when Jesus was born and what they learned in the waiting for the Savior. God is not going to waste your time waiting! Let's lean in, learn to long for Him, and embrace obedience to the Spirit.  Group Life Questions1. When you think of waiting in connection with your relationship with God, what comes to mind?2. Think of a recent time the Lord made you wait. What was the end result?3. What does waiting on the Lord mean according to Psalm 62:5-7, Psalm 42:2, Psalm 37:7, and Psalm 119:166? Do you believe God wants to do a long-range work in your life or are we just looking for a quick solution?4. Consider the following examples of waiting from God's Word: Simeon and Anna (Luke 2) & the Disciples (Acts 1:8). What did they do while waiting on the Lord?5. Consider how waiting implies longing and hope. What does this mean for something you are waiting for right now? Discuss doubt and discouragement in the waiting process and how the people waiting for Jesus' arrival might have felt.

If you already have received this gift I hope you will better appreciate it and fully experience it as you are reminded of how great it is.What makes a gift great?● The value of a gift is not so much determined by the cost of the gift but by the thoughtfulness and sacrifice of the giver.● The more personal thought and attention also adds to the value of that gift.● A true gift is always given without any expectation.● One of the best things about a gift is the anticipation of a gift. The Gift of God was ordered before time began!● 2 Timothy 1:8 Therefore do not be ashamed of the testimony of our Lord, nor of me His prisoner, but share with me in the sufferings for the gospel according to the power of God, 9 who has saved us and called us with a holy calling, not according to our works, but according to His own purpose and grace which was given to us in Christ Jesus before time began,● 1 John 4:10 This is love: not that we loved God, but that he loved us and sent his Son as an atoning sacrifice for our sins. The Gift was shipped from heaven to earth when Jesus was found in the womb of Mary! (Matthew 1:18-21)Why did he come?● To save us from ourselves (John 3:16-18)Jesus was not a creation of God, He is God in flesh● JOHN 1: 1 In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. 2 He was in the beginning with God. 3 All things were made through Him, and without Him nothing was made that was made. 4 In Him was life, and the life was the light of men. 5 And the light shines in the darkness, and the darkness did not comprehend it.The gift is tracked in the life of Christ!Jesus meet Moses “The Law” He was born under the law to fulfill the law (Luke 2:21-24)● Matthew 5:17 “Do not think that I have come to abolish the Law or the Prophets; I have not come to abolish them but to fulfill them”● Galations 4:4-5 But when the set time had fully come, God sent his Son, born of a woman, born under the law, 5 to redeem those under the law, that we might receive adoption to sonship.Jesus meets Simeon (Luke 2:25-35)Jesus meets Anna (Luke 2:36-38)● 36 There was also a prophet, Anna, the daughter of Penuel, of the tribe of Asher. She was very old; she had lived with her husband seven years after her marriage, 37 and then was a widow until she was eighty-four.[e] She never left the temple but worshiped night and day, fasting and praying. 38 Coming up to them at that very moment, she gave thanks to God and spoke about the child to all who were looking forward to the redemption of Jerusalem.Philippians 1:6being confident of this, that he who began a good work in you will carry it on to completion until the day of Christ Jesus.Oasis Church exists to help people see Jesus more clearly. We are led by Pastor Nate Clarke and are located in Richmond, VA.STAY CONNECTEDInstagram: https://www.instagram.com/oasischurchva/Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/OasisChurchRVA/Website: https://oasischurch.onlineOasis Church exists to help people see Jesus more clearly. We are led by Pastor Nate Clarke and are located in Richmond, VA.Stay Connected:Website: https://oasischurch.online Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/oasischurchva/Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/OasisChurchRVA/

ROMANS 10:1-4  ISRAEL'S REFUSAL OF GOD'S RIGHTEOUSNESSRomans 10:1 Brethren, my heart's desire and prayer to God for Israel is that they may be saved. 2 For I bear them witness that they have a zeal for God, but not according to knowledge. 3 For they being ignorant of God's righteousness, and seeking to establish their own righteousness, have not submitted to the righteousness of God. 4 For Christ is the end of the law for righteousness to everyone who believes.OBJECTIVES IN STUDYING THIS CHAPTER 1) To see the importance of combining zeal with the right kind of knowledge 2) To understand that Israel had plenty of opportunity to heed the gospel of Christ, but for the most part they had rejected it SUMMARY As Paul continues to explain God's dealings with the nation of Israel, he repeats his expression of love towards them (1).  Though as a nation they had plenty of zeal, unfortunately their zeal was not according to the right kind of knowledge (2).  Thus they rejected the righteousness of God while trying to establish their own righteousness through the Law of Moses.  But Paul explains that Christ is the fulfillment of the Law and has brought it to an end (3-4). The righteousness God now offers is based upon faith in Christ, not keeping the Law.  It involves not the accomplishment of some great feat (like ascending to heaven or descending to hell), but such things as confessing Jesus as Lord and believing that God raised Him from the dead (5-10).  As foretold by Scripture, it is offered to all, both Jew and Gentile (11-13).  And it is offered through the medium of preaching the Word (14-15). The problem with the nation of Israel, then, is that not all of them received the gospel message, even when they had ample opportunity (16-18).  But as Moses predicted, the day would come when God would provoke Israel to jealousy by another people, who Isaiah said did not seek God yet found Him, while Israel was constantly rebelling against Him (19-21). The theme of this chapter is Israel's present rejection. Paul moved from divine sovereignty (Rom. 9) to human responsibility. He continued the theme of righteousness introduced at the end of the previous chapter (Rom. 9:30–33) and explains three aspects of Israel's rejection I.          ISRAEL'S REFUSAL OF GOD'S RIGHTEOUSNESS (1-15)The Reasons for Their Rejection (Rom. 10:1–13) You would think that Israel as a nation would have been eagerly expecting the arrival of their Messiah and been prepared to receive Him. For centuries they had known the Old Testament prophecies and had practiced the Law, which was “a schoolmaster” to lead them to Christ (Gal. 3:24). God had sought to prepare the nation, but when Jesus Christ came, they rejected Him. “He came unto His own [world] and His own [people] received Him not” (John 1:11). To be sure, there was a faithful remnant in the nation that looked for His arrival, such as Simeon and Anna (Luke 2:25–38); but the majority of the people were not ready when He came. How do we explain this tragic event? Paul gives several reasons why Israel rejected their Messiah. A.                PAUL'S EXPRESSION OF CONCERN FOR ISRAEL (1-4)1.                 That Israel be saved, for they have zeal but not real knowledge (1-2)Ro 10:1 Brethren, my heart's desire and prayer to God for Israel is that they may be saved. They did not feel a need for salvation (v. 1). There was a time when Paul would have agreed with his people, for he himself opposed the Gospel and considered Jesus Christ an impostor. Israel considered the Gentiles in need of salvation, but certainly not the themselves.

Welcome back to the Simply Stories Podcast! I'm thrilled to be back with new episodes and heading into season 4 with author and educator Danielle Hitchen of Catechesis Books. Danielle is passionate about sharing her love of church history and the tools we have at our fingertips by way of the church calendar in order to offer encouragement and connection with God and with one another in every season of life. She is the author of a series of baby believer primer books, and creates all kinds of content that help teach the tenets of the faith and helps us disciple our time, ourselves, and our families in our faith and with hope.  Today Danielle shares with us what exactly catechesis is, where some of these practices come from, why liturgy can be such a gift, and how these patterns and practices of the early church can minister to us today. Now Danielle nor I want to add something to your already long to do list. These tools she has created and shared, and this conversation are simply opportunities to connect with the Lord and remind us of who He has always been. There is grace for all the seasons, Jesus Himself experienced all of the seasons, and we're going to explore how to provide intentional opportunities to engage God uniquely where we are and maybe learn some things we didn't know before which perhaps could breathe life into the ancient, but familiar.  What a sweet way to start the new year, yeah? I know we're surrounded by resolutions and gym membership flyers, but personally, I've just been trying to get out of bed, and remember what day it is. I love the grace and gentle invitation the church calendar offers us, as a way to connect with the ever-present always faithful God, and I love Danielle's mission to help us find our place in whatever season we are in. Friends, I've missed you. The Lord was so kind to me in my sabbatical, and I am full of anticipation about what God has been doing and curious to see what He does next. I'm so honored that you are here in it with me. Remember, friend. You matter, and your story matters.  Connecting with Danielle: Baby Believer Primers (her board books for kids!) Title: Women of Christmas: AnnaSpeaker: Nate HoldridgeText: Luke 2:36-38Women Of Christmas Theme: For this Christmas season—Advent—over the next three Sundays, I would like us to consider some of the women of Christmas. All of them are found in Luke's gospel. First, we will consider Elizabeth, the mother of John the Baptist and a relative of Mary. Second, we will consider Mary, the young virgin who became the blessed mother of our Lord. And third, we will consider Anna, the elderly widow who daily waited for the Messiah in the Jewish temple and celebrated when she saw Jesus.Overview: And we should carry a similar hope today. Anna wanted the redemption of Jerusalem, but we crave the redemption of the whole world. Isaiah (and Habakkuk after him) promised a day to come when "the earth shall be full of the knowledge of the LORD as the waters cover the sea" (Is. 11:9, Hab. 2:14). Living, as we do, on the Monterey Bay, we know a bit about the sea. In our bay, there is seemingly endless life, a whole world that researchers are increasingly learning about. It is a world under water, under the deluge, existing within the substance. One day, Christ will come, and he will establish his reign and kingdom forever. And it will be like life under the ocean surface—we will exist within his realm, with a knowledge of him, his ways, and his goodness. Nothing will be untouched by the cross.Right now, though we hope for that kingdom, we have a hard time imagining it. But, one day, when Jesus returns, not as a baby but as a conquering king, "what no eye has seen or heard or imagined, what God has prepared for those who love him," will be known (1 Cor. 2:9). It will be our experience. We will be swimming in it. No, living within it. So, with Anna, let's live in anticipation and hope!Links:Sermon Notes

Who do you picture when you hear the word, “disciple”? Most of us probably instinctively picture a man, but the Gospels show us that Jesus encouraged and empowered women disciples in his ministry. Today we're looking at Jesus's interactions with women from a grieving widow to a wealthy benefactress. Jesus has an inspiring track record of involving women in His life and ministry, and making a place of welcome for us in His presence. This episode also has some meaningful reflections from the story of Mary and Martha that can be for men as well as women, so (as always) all are welcome to dig in with us! Read along with us: Luke 2:36-38 (Anna) Luke 7:11-17 (the grieving widow) Luke 8:1-3 // Luke 24:10 (women in Jesus' ministry) Luke 10:38-42 (Mary and Martha) John 12:1-8 (Mary anoints Jesus)

Romans 10:1 Brethren, my heart's desire and prayer to God for Israel is that they may be saved. 2 For I bear them witness that they have a zeal for God, but not according to knowledge. 3 For they being ignorant of God's righteousness, and seeking to establish their own righteousness, have not submitted to the righteousness of God. 4 For Christ is the end of the law for righteousness to everyone who believes. OBJECTIVES IN STUDYING THIS CHAPTER 1) To see the importance of combining zeal with the right kind of knowledge 2) To understand that Israel had plenty of opportunity to heed the gospel of Christ, but for the most part they had rejected it SUMMARY As Paul continues to explain God's dealings with the nation of Israel, he repeats his expression of love towards them (1). 9:30–33) and explains three aspects of Israel's rejection You would think that Israel as a nation would have been eagerly expecting the arrival of their Messiah and been prepared to receive Him. PAUL'S EXPRESSION OF CONCERN FOR ISRAEL (1-4) That Israel be saved, for they have zeal but not real knowledge (1-2) Ro 10:1 Brethren, my heart's desire and prayer to God for Israel is that they may be saved. They did not feel a need for salvation (v. 1). There was a time when Paul would have agreed with his people, for he himself opposed the Gospel and considered Jesus Christ an impostor. Israel considered the Gentiles in need of salvation, but certainly not the themselves. In several of His parables, Jesus pointed out this wrong attitude: the elder brother (Luke 15:11–32) and the Pharisee (Luke 18:9–14) are two examples. Israel would have been happy for political salvation from Rome, but she did not feel she needed spiritual salvation from her own sin. Ro 10:2 For I bear them witness that they have a zeal for God, but not according to knowledge. They were zealous for God (v. 2). Ever since Israel returned to their land from Babylonian Captivity, the nation had been cured of idolatry. In the temple and the local synagogues, only the true God was worshiped and served, and only the true Law was taught. So zealous were the Jews that they even “improved upon God's Law” and added their own traditions, making them equal to the Law. Paul himself had been zealous for the Law and the traditions (Acts 26:1–11; Gal. 1:13–14). Ac 22:3 "I am indeed a Jew, born in Tarsus of Cilicia, but brought up in this city at the feet of Gamaliel, taught according to the strictness of our fathers' law, and was zealous toward God as you all are today. Ga 1:13 For you have heard of my former conduct in Judaism, how I persecuted the church of God beyond measure and tried to destroy it. 14 And I advanced in Judaism beyond many of my contemporaries in my own nation, being more exceedingly zealous for the traditions of my fathers                it was as if Paul had been considering himself a 100-watt light bulb, surrounded by people who were only 75-, 60-, and 25-watt light bulbs. But, when Jesus appeared to him, the righteousness of Jesus was like the brightness of the sun. When Paul realized that, he gave up trying to create his own righteousness and instead placed his faith in Jesus, which was the only sensible thing to do.[i]                But their zeal was not based on the right kind of knowledge; it was heat without light. Sad to say, many religious people today are making the same mistake. They think that their good works and religious deeds will save them, when actually these practices are keeping them from being saved. Certainly many of them are sincere and devout, but sincerity and devotion will never save the soul. “Therefore by the deeds of the Law there shall no flesh be justified in His sight” (Rom. 3:20). Through ignorance, they seek to save themselves by the Law, and do not submit to God's righteousness in Christ which brings an end to the Law (3-4) Ro 10:3 For they being ignorant of God's righteousness, and seeking to establish their own righteousness, have not submitted to the righteousness of God.                They were proud and self-righteous (v. 3). Israel was ignorant of God's righteousness, not because they had never been told, but because they refused to learn. There is an ignorance that comes from lack of opportunity, but Israel had had many opportunities to be saved. In their case, it was an ignorance that stemmed from willful, stubborn resistance to the truth. They would not submit to God. They were proud of their own good works and religious self-righteousness, and would not admit their sins and trust the Savior. Paul had made the same mistake before he met the Lord (Phil. 3:1–11). The godly Presbyterian preacher, Robert Murray McCheyne, was passing out tracts one day and handed one to a well-dressed lady. She gave him a haughty look and said, “Sir, you must not know who I am!” In his kind way, McCheyne replied, “Madam, there is coming a day of judgment, and on that day it will not make any difference who you are!”  4 For Christ is the end of the law for righteousness to everyone who believes. They misunderstood their own Law (vv. 4–13). Everything about the Jewish religion pointed to the coming Messiah—their sacrifices, priesthood, temple services, religious festivals, and covenants. Their Law told them they were sinners in need of a Saviour. But instead of letting the Law bring them to Christ They worshiped their Law and rejected their Saviour.  Ga 3:24 Therefore the law was our tutor to bring us to Christ, that we might be justified by faith.                The Law was a signpost, pointing the way. But it could never take them to their destination. The Law cannot give righteousness; it only leads the sinner to the Saviour who can give righteousness. Christ is “the end of the Law” in the sense that through His death and resurrection, He has terminated the ministry of the Law for those who believe. The Law is ended as far as Christians are concerned. The righteousness of the Law is being fulfilled in the life of the believer through the power of the Spirit (Rom. 8:4); but the reign of the Law has ended (see Eph. 2:15; Col. 2:14). “For ye are not under the Law, but under grace” (Rom. 6:14). Ga 6:2 Bear one another's burdens, and so fulfill the law of Christ. Mt 5:17 "Do not think that I came to destroy the Law or the Prophets. I did not come to destroy but to fulfill. 18 "For assuredly, I say to you, till heaven and earth pass away, one jot or one tittle will by no means pass from the law till all is fulfilled. 19 "Whoever therefore breaks one of the least of these commandments, and teaches men so, shall be called least in the kingdom of heaven; but whoever does and teaches them, he shall be called great in the kingdom of heaven. 20 "For I say to you, that unless your righteousness exceeds the righteousness of the scribes and Pharisees, you will by no means enter the kingdom of heaven. Col 2:13 And you, being dead in your trespasses and the uncircumcision of your flesh, He has made alive together with Him, having forgiven you all trespasses,  14 having wiped out the handwriting of requirements that was against us, which was contrary to us. And He has taken it out of the way, having nailed it to the cross. Mark 8:36 "For what will it profit a man if he gains the whole world, and loses his own soul? John 14:6 Jesus said to him, “I am the way, the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through Me. Have you trusted Him as your Savior? He can Save you if You ask Him based on His death, burial, and resurrection for your sins.
