Irish Guide Dogs for the Blind have launched an appeal for puppy raisers to look after guide dog puppies in their own homes from 9 weeks to 12-14 months. The role of the puppy raiser is so crucial to the success of IGDB’s dogs eventually going back to the Training Centre in Cork for formal training and hopefully becoming a Guide or Assistance Dog. A puppy raiser doesn’t need to have previous experience training dogs, just a love and commitment to support and care for the puppies to ensure they get the best start in their training journey. And support from IGDB’s expert trainers is always available. Vet fees and food is covered by IGDB. Puppy raisers are from all walks of life – those who work remotely, hybrid work, are retired, have children, have pets etc Siobhan Brosnan has been meeting with Irish Guide Dogs staff, volunteers and guide dog users from around the county. If you are interested in becoming a puppy raiser please email pups@guidedogs.ie or call 0818 506300 or email: support@guidedogs.ie

Daisie is a black Labrador retriever, who works as an "ambassadog" for the assistance dog charity, Canine Partners. Daisie and her handler, Ellie Chadwick, demonstrate to the general public the various tasks that an assistance may do to support its disabled human handler. They do this on a voluntary basis at weekends at country shows and other events all over the country, as part of the charity's fundraising efforts. Ellie's day job is also within Canine Partners, and she has spent her career to date working with and training support dogs. This is linked to the last Dogs with Jobs episode, which focused on the canine/human partnership in action - that of eight year old golden retriever, Darcey and her human partner, Wren Rawlings. They have been partnered for seven years, and Wren gives an articulate and nuanced account of their relationship and how it has evolved and changed his life. By coincidence, Ellie, whom we hear from in this episode, is the Canine Partners liaison link with Darcey and Wren - making this episode a companion piece. Recorded at the South Downs Show, 2024. Dogs are in high demand as pets. In fact, 36% of households in the UK own one, according to the UK Pet Food survey 2024. Our canine pals can be cute, cuddly and loyal friends. But, for many owners, dogs are much more than this – they are a lifeline. Assistance dogs provide essential support, increased independence and companionship for disabled people and people with medical conditions – they have even saved lives. There are many different types of assistance dogs out there, from hearing dogs to autism dogs to guide dogs. But what makes the perfect assistance dog? Common assistance dog breeds are Labrador retrievers, golden retrievers and German shepherds. The most common guide dog in the UK is the golden retriever-Labrador cross, which, according to the Guide Dogs National Centre, has a 'combination of desirable traits'. Guide dogs need to be able to lead a blind or visually impaired person outside and inside, while avoiding distractions and recognising and avoiding obstacles such as changes in elevation, like tree roots, curbs and stairs. With that in mind, training puppies is essential. The Guide Dogs for the Blind Association trains puppies using positive reinforcement, rewarding good behaviour with food, praise and affection. When it comes to hearing dogs, a very important part of their training is sound awareness – alerting their deaf partner to sounds they would otherwise miss, for example a smoke alarm, an alarm clock or a crying baby. Katie Grundy, a puppy trainer at the charity Hearing Dogs for Deaf People, teaches puppies targeting, a technique where the dogs touch a target, like a hand, with their nose for a treat. This teaches hearing dogs how to notify their partner when a sound goes off. At the end of training, not all pups qualify, but they are put up for adoption and, of course, make excellent lovable pets.
Steve Morris from the Government Accountability Office (GAO) visits with Marcie and Fenway about his office's recent report focusing on the working conditions of Uncle Sam's working dogs. Dozens of federal agencies employ working dogs to fulfill their missions, including Homeland Security and the Department of State. Dogs are deployed throughout the U.S. and abroad. Keeping these dogs healthy and ensuring their quality of life is paramount and this recent report suggests that federal agencies need to do a better job addressing the health and welfare of their working dogs. EPISODE NOTES: How Many Dogs Work for the United States (U.S.) Government?
Marcie and Fenway welcome Dr. Brennen McKenzie to the show to learn about his groundbreaking research with Loyal for Dogs on medical treatments that will potentially expand the lifespan of large breed dogs. He shares information about what you can do right now to keep your dog healthy for longer. Here we go, two epic worlds collide as we speak to Pat and Jas. Both former special ops personnel, discharged due to injuries and come together to bounce off one another over their love for (and obsession with) training assistance and attack dogs. When we think of assistance dogs, most of us think of guide dogs. I was beyond fascinated to hear about how mental health assistance dogs are trained and very much fascinated by hearing about 'bite dogs' which is Pat's area of expertise as he trains military and police canines. If you LOVE dogs (of course you do) and you LOVE supporting military and first responder wellbeing (of course you do) then you'll love this episode. I sure did, thanks to The Code 9 Foundation for the opportunity! This week Anna welcomes back Dr Amit Patel and his famous Guide Dog, Kika. We chat about a new programme on Cbeebies called Dog Squad which is all about teaching children just how amazing dogs are in helping their owners. For Dr Amit, Kika is his eyes. There are four other superhero dogs featured: Tinks, Sylvie, Meagaidh and Diesel. They all have amazing jobs! We chat about how the TV show also aims to break down preconceptions on disabilities, and explain why dogs can help people live independent lives. Giving an educational view on dogs and how they help people is going to inspire the next generation to understand dogs, and look at disability in a new light. Dr Amit talks about how he is an Ambassador for Guide Dogs having had his life transformed by Kika, and he speaks out as to why Assistance Dogs should never be refused access; how some venues, taxi firms and more refuse Kika entrance which is against the law. Dr Amit also chats about Kika and Me, the best-selling book highlighting their journey. As Dr Amit admits he was skeptical a dog could help him as much as Kika has. He also announces a huge piece of news: that his book is going to be made into the film! More on that in another episode coming soon! This week Anna is over the moon to get the scoop on a new charity - Assistance Dog Assessment Association. She is joined by two of the Trustees, Richard Mearns and Selina Valentine, along with Richard's Assistance Dog, Ziggy. We chat about why the charity has been launched; namely to clarify what defines an Assistance Dog in the UK. Often Assistance Dogs that are not partnered with a visible disability can lead to confusion with service providers and businesses. Especially with the discussion between what constitutes an Emotional Support Dog and a Mental Health Assistance Dog. We also chat about why independent assessment run by expert trainers can allow for more dogs to be trained and qualified as Assistance that perform tasks, helping their client navigate the world with task related assistance. Selina talks about her own assistance dogs and how they have helped her, and why she is passionate to help others find an easier way through assessment and qualification achieve their goal to benefit from a dog by their side. We chat about the team of experienced Trustees coming from a variety of charities and dog focused organisations, which is key to getting it right in the owner trained sector. We talk about raising awareness and how to donate.
