How important is it for businesses to increase their profits each year or offer fair wages to workers of all types? How do you think businesses are doing in these areas or, even in other areas, such as operating in a way that is sustainable for the environment and the planet? A Gallup poll of more than 5700 people provided responses to these questions and it was natural to ask how these questions might be connected and whether the pattern of connection differed between groups. Using networks to understand the connection between opinions about how businesses function is the focus of this episode of Stats and Stories with guests Dr. Moinak Bhaduri and Bahareh Zahirodini. Dr. Moinak Bhaduri is an assistant professor at Bently University and studies spatio-temporal Poisson processes and others like the self-exciting Hawkes or log Dr. Gaussian Cox processes that are natural generalizations. His primary interest includes developing change-detection algorithms in systems modeled by these stochastic processes, especially through trend permutations. His research has found applications in computer science, finance, reliability and repairable systems, geoscience, and oceanography. Follow some of Moinak's work using the links below. Bahareh Zahirodini, MSBA, is a research assistant working alongside Dr. Moinak Bhaduri at the Department of Mathematical Sciences, Bentley University in Massachusetts. Her research interests lie in financial modeling with an emphasis on social issues. Voilà 8 ans, la France connaissait la pire attaque terroriste perpétrée sur son sol : les attentats du 13-Novembre ont fait 130 morts et 350 blessés à Saint-Denis et Paris. Bahareh Akrami, l'invitée de France 24, se trouvait dans un bar parisien pris pour cible et a eu la chance d'en réchapper. Six ans plus tard, elle a suivi le procès des auteurs des attentats. Elle raconte ces audiences historiques, parfois avec humour, dans le roman graphique "On aurait aimé savoir" (Steinkis Editions).

Want, ben je ziek als je zwanger bent? Het antwoord is natuurlijk – mits je medisch bent, en vaak ook dan niet: nee! En toch zijn we gezonde zwangere vrouwen gaan behandelen alsof ze ziek zijn. We passen meer en meer interventies toe rondom de geboorte, en inmiddels leidt dat niet meer tot verbeterde geboorte-uitkomsten. Het geboorteproces is steeds meer gemedicaliseerd, terwijl het in de basis zo natuurlijk is als het voortbestaan als de mensheid. Uiteraard zijn medische interventies essentieel als ze levensreddend zijn of gecompliceerde geboortes versoepelen, maar veel zorg die we nu toepassen is gebaseerd op risicomijding en maakt dat er vrijwel geen ruimte meer is voor het feit dat een bevalling een bekrachtigende en bijzondere ervaring kan betekenen in het leven van de vrouw. Bovendien komen al die interventies ook niet zonder risico. Tijd om hier écht anders (en van álle kanten) naar te kijken. Before I start today's podcast, I would like to mention a little something about the title of yesterday's podcast. One of my listeners, called Bahareh, asked me to explain the expression Super Duper Slither Scooter. First of all, the scooter is just the thing that you ride. Slither is the brand name of it; you could call it 'The Slither'. Super Duper is a silly phrase that we use to say that something is wonderful. We also use it sarcastically. Most often, super duper indicates that something is brand new, or of good quality, or just quite special. And, of course, the two words rhyme, which makes it a little more playful in speech. "My father bought a super duper car" is less serious or formal than "my father bought an elegant, expensive car". I hope that is clear. Anyway, the sixth grade science experiment found its way into my kitchen. I discovered it sitting on the counter top. There was a strange smell in the air, something unpleasant and sharp smelling. So I looked around, and there it was. It was a glass with an egg floating in white vinegar. Okay, that makes sense. My son, Hudson, has started to learn about the Periodic table, the different elements, the molecules, and how they interact. I remember many years ago doing the same thing in science class.
