Ok- the paleo diet was ground breaking in every way!  It was actually started by a man named Walter Voegtlin, who was a gastroenterologist.  He called it the ‘Stone Age Diet', a diet that eliminated most all foods that came after the agricultural revolution approximately 10,000 years ago. After him, Loren Cordain is the one who revived it around 2005.  This is when I discovered it, and even wrote to Cordain about a health problem of my wife, and he graciously responded.  We adopted his diet, and her health problem resolved completely, and quickly!  That is when PaleoJay was born…Other Paleo gurus emerged, all of which had a lot to offer in different ways.  As in most other things, the approach evolved as more was discovered.  Trial and error, along with lots of research, caused the theory to evolve.  The one thing that remained constant was the ever-present knowledge, revealed by archeological records, that health and overall wellness had been far better for ancient humans when they consumed an evolutionarily correct diet: only sourdough and otherwise processed grains allowed, if consumed at all, in minimal amounts.  The same with sweeteners like sugar, which were largely unknown to our ancestors. My health, and that of my family, improved dramatically from around 2005 to today.  My body fat dropped quickly, which revealed my long-exercising body that was buried beneath it.  My migraine headaches went away quickly and completely,    and I largely stopped cardio or ‘aerobic' types of training for long periods, going only for sprints or ‘heavy hands' walking while swinging dumbbells energetically.    I worked way more on flexibility, and began running and walking barefoot- voila- my feet problems also disappeared!Robb Wolf, Loren Cordain's student, emerged as a guru, and led lots of folks on the evolving path of paleo.  Chris Kresser was a voice of reason throughout, as were Beverly Meyer and Mark Sisson.  I took ideas from each one, tested them in my own life, and either kept or discarded them as I learned and experienced more.  Jimmy Moore was a voice of cheerful reason, and his many, many guests kept me informed and enlightened over the years, primarily about proper nutrition. But my ideas about exercise also continually kept evolving, with the lifting of really heavy weights being revealed as problematic, and unnecessary, just as had aerobics and cardio earlier on.  The importance of sleep kept rearing its head, as did ancillary practices like forest bathing and the importance of sunlight  and then true darkness to maintain our circadian rhythm.A couple of years ago or so, the term Paleo itself kind of disappeared!  Now, magazines at the supermarket checkout and the new bestseller books were all about KETO.  It was very similar to paleo, but instead of being about a totality of lifestyle being reached through diet and other practices- now it was just consume lots and lots of fat!  This, coupled with zero carbs, resulted in fast fat loss; and it appears that, overall: this is basically all the majority of people care about.Keto is, therefore, very one dimensional; focussing on fat loss almost entirely.  It is really more, to me, of a therapeutic, short term view of how to live.  If you force your body to live off of ketones, of basically FAT, you become, as Mark Sisson puts it: a fat burner.  So, your body is running off of the cleanest fuel it can.  This way, it can avoid seizures in epileptics, for instance, which has been known about for a very long time.CARNIVORE is the latest form of evolutionary nutritional diets.  Shawn Baker, Paul Saladino, and a host of others now to

Beverly Meyer is a practitioner, podcaster, and blogger who, like so many of us, have struggled with her own health issues early in life. In her college years, Beverly contracted herpes and she was disappointed at what was conventionally known at the time. She sought other doctors, received natural and conservative treatment, and she was able to at least suppress its symptoms. She has since become an advocate for alternative medicine and has established herself as a household name in the Paleo world. In today's episode, Beverly shares her learning experience and why she had an interest to research GABA. She also explains why she calls GABA the “forgotten neurotransmitter” and what you can do to determine if you're low in GABA and how to improve your levels.   “GABA is that neurotransmitter that's keeping things at a stable, steady pattern.” – Beverly Meyer     On Today's Episode of A Healthy Curiosity: The four main neurotransmitters in the body. How seizures are linked to GABA. GABA's main roles in the body. Does GABA get depleted and can it be increased through our diet? Why she tells her clients to remove gluten in their diet. Her favorite sleep trick. GABA sources she recommends. What is "leaky brain"? Her thoughts on seeing traditional doctors.     Key Takeaway: People have to be willing to speak up and acknowledge that they deserve better doctors. The problem is human life right now revolves around stress. Our rational minds are swamped with irrational events that we can't place in a rational system. Every cell in your body is programed to win, to live, and to do its job perfectly. We don't have to make things happen, our job is to let things happen.     Resources mentioned: PharmaGABA The EDGE Effect book   Connect with Beverly Meyer: On Diet and Health Primal Diet, Modern Health podcast       Level Up Your Life Are you ready to upgrade to the next version of you? Emu Oil and Paleo

Just when you think you’ve got the ancestral, paleo type of diet pretty much all figured out- another wrinkle appears! Actually, this is part of what is so really cool about paleo, it is an endless road of discovery. Your typical medical doctor thinks he has it all figured out: what he learned in medical school 30 years ago is all he needs to know… Of course, he is dead wrong, and if you follow his advice, you too will wind up not only wrong, but dead. Conventional medicine will never recommend new, cutting-edge types of things that might really help you, it is always a matter of “following the corporate, standard treatments” that haven’t worked ever, but are still recommended because, well because that is what we have been told! I have always steered clear of fish oil, instead preferring to consume fish instead. Duh. Although I do like to include a good cod liver oil in my smoothies as well. But now, it appears there is something better, dramatically better actually, and that is emu oil. This is a large, flightless bird native to Australia, and is the oldest bird on the planet, said to be over 1 million years that the breed has been alive! These birds are unique also in that the male emus sit on the eggs the female has laid, for up to 7 weeks, never leaving the nest. They can do this because of their fat, which supplies everything they need to survive this whole time. This fat, this oil, is what we are talking about here: an oil that can supply everything necessary for life- including water!- for such an extended period of time. Imagine how strong- how vital and loaded with all sorts of nutrients such an oil must be! And so, I have done a lot of research, and even ordered my emu oil, with great hopes! Not so much for myself, but for those of my tribe, my family and friends, that are not nearly so healthy as me. For, the most amazing thing about this oil is that- it seems to fix the junctures of a leaky gut! This is so huge, because most of my unhealthy tribal members are unhealthy because… they do not follow my dietary advice. They eat gluten. They suck down sugar as if it is God’s greatest gift! They are therefore broken- almost everyone I know that is over 40 has all kinds of ailments, from psoriasis, to diabetes, to heart disease. And still they refuse to change their ways! I understand how hard it seems, but still… But now, emu oil, although I’m sure it can’t be a cure-all panacea, still- it seems to work wonders on really ailing people! Remember, though: just as with American cattle, emus are now being raised worldwide, in deplorable conditions: GMO feed, lots of vaccinations, not in their native habitat! Steer clear of this: get a dependable, Australian source, from a emu variant that is ancestral. The best source I have found is https://www.ondietandhealth.com/product/walkabout-emu-oil-vitamin-k2/ Beverly Meyer would not steer us wrong! And this supplier is right near me, here in Wisconsin- I think I may have to drive over and meet him, make him part of my tribe! We shall see. But what I am hearing is that even in folks who do not change their deplorable, SAD diets- they get much better! Their gut heals enough (from taking a few capsules or drops of emu oil per day), that their heart disease goes into remission. The oil rubbed on their body topically cures their joint pain, despite them eating donuts and bread on a regular basis! It even is supposed to help with diabetes! Again, we shall see. I will experiment on myself, as an experiment of one, but I am not the gold standard test, since I am pretty healthy, overall! What I am fascinated with is that this oil, if what I am researching is true- Works on sick people eating the Standard American (SAD), horrible diet! Maybe it is a reverse gateway drug, meaning that people take it, orally and topically, and get vastly better! This makes them think, “Hey, maybe there’s somet

Today’s podcast is a conversation I had with a wonderful fount of knowledge, Beverly Meyer. Beverly has been a client of natural health therapies since 1972. After a successful but exhausting career in business (with interviews in Glamour, Venture, Entrepreneur and Inc.), she devoted herself full-time to the study and practice of health therapies. She’s been helping clients with a wide variety of health problems ever since. On today’s show we’re chatting about the very undervalued vitamin - Vitamin K, and the role its lack plays in all kinds of physical conditions from facial and mouth bone abnormalities to fertility and pregnancy. No matter what you’ve heard about Vitamin K in the past, you’re sure to hear something you didn’t know on this podcast episode. Beverly’s story of the discovery of Vitamin K’s importance in the human diet. Around the age of 61 Beverly discovered that her narrow palate was at the root of issues she was experiencing - anxiety, heart issues, etc. The shape of her jaw (V-shaped instead of U-shaped) was pushing back on her skull causing undue pressure on her brain. Wearing a particular kind of mouth guard for a while corrected the problem but she wasn’t satisfied. She began questioning why the last few generations of people have had more narrow palates than those in the past. What she discovered was that our diets in the last decade have been deficient in Vitamin K2 in particular, an essential vitamin in the development of bones and facial structures. The is a very intriguing conversation that will uncover the importance of Vitamin K and explain why everyone needs to be on some kind of supplementation to provide Vitamin K to their diet. What is Vitamin K? Vitamin K is one of the fat-soluble vitamins… and the way these fat-soluble vitamins work is that they all move and work together. If any of them is missing the function of the others are compromised. Vitamin K is the most neglected and misunderstood of the bunch. It’s lack is now being traced to health problems of all kinds. It’s a vitamin most people in the western world don’t get much of in their regular diet. What should you do in light of this information? Today’s guest, Beverly Meyer, is an expert on Vitamin K and shares a great deal of actionable information on this episode, so set aside some time to hear what she’s got to say, and what she recommends for the average person to do about their lack of Vitamin K. The main function of Vitamin K2: It’s all about Calcium. Beverly Meyer’s way of understanding what Vitamin K does in the diet is a clever, 3-word sentence she’s come up with, and all of the words begin with the letter “K,” (Isn’t that Klever?) Here it is: K Karries Kalcium (K carries calcium). Vitamin K is the delivery truck that picks up calcium and delivers it to the proper address. When you get deficient in K, the places in your body that need calcium don’t get it. So what happens to the calcium? It could float around aimlessly in your bloodstream causing plaque in your arteries. It could turn into plaque on your teeth. It could contribute to gallstones or kidney stones. Find out more about why K is so important in your diet by listening to this episode. The importance of supplementing with Vitamin K every day. There are foods you can add to or increase in your diet that will give you additional Vitamin K2. Animal organs, pastured eggs, blue cheese, and many others are on the list of the best foods to include. But even then you won’t likely get enough to prevent the abnormalities that come from a diet deficient in Vitamin K. That’s why Beverly Meyer, today’s guest, recommends that everyone from age 3 through all stages of adulthood, use Vitamin K supplements. In today’s conversation Beverly recommends a couple of different brands of Vitamin K supplements that are natural and safe and shares more foods you can eat to help make up for any Vitamin K deficiency. Here’s the outline of this interview with Beverly Meyer: [0:19] Welcome and introduction of today’s guest, Beverly Meyer. [1:02] Beverly’s interest in Vitamin K2, and why it’s important. Slowing down and calming down to create more energy. It's almost like a contradiction in terms. But it works, and that's why meditation/trance/hypnosis/chillout time is so popular for people. This week's Zestology podcast guest is fascinating, and contains some important themes. One is slowing down a bit to create a huge store of stamina and energy. Amen. We need to talk about this more. All of my audiobooks on iTunes have a similar theme using hypnosis and NLP skills to calm the mind, get into more of an Alpha State, and activate the parasympathetic nervous system. And with my cool guest - blogger, podcaster and Natural Health practitioner Beverley Meyer - I have a similar mind that we can really get going on this subject - slowing off and switching off for more energy and feeling great. Beverley also specialises in the area of nutrition and we tackle some fun foody subjects too. We delve right in and get technical around how good coconut oil is to encourage you to burn fat for fuel (great if you want to tone up and get an energy boost from your food). Then things get a bit crazy, like for instance, have you ever put coconut oil in your tea? Or on your face? And in your food? And if you haven't ever supplemented with Vitamin K2, you may want to after listening to this. When you listen, you'll hear: Living with more energy Coconut oil provides a unique kind of saturated fat that helps your body burn fat for fuel. [10:15] How to elevate your calves on a wall or a chair to mimic the same benefits of a nap. [21:03] Why food needs to be first. [35:20] Finding motivation The best way to create more energy is to slow down [00:20] Why men and women need to adhere to different nutritional plans [6:00] How GABA works as the “brakes” of your brain and helps you slow down [12:05] The Beta state [13:07] The person that does the least is the most active [20:13] For more information   Nutrition and Physical Degeneration Beverly's popular health site ondietandhealth.com

Welcome!  My guest today is Beverly Meyer, who has been an alternative health patient since the 1970’s.  She has tried many different modalities to treat anxiety, adrenal disorders, digestive issues, and numerous autoimmune disorders.  Beverly has dedicated her life to studying and finding answers and now helps many clients find their way to a better diet and better health.  She has fascinating information to share! Much of what Beverly teaches her clients stems from the research and findings of Dr. Weston Price, a dentist who practiced in the early 20th century.  He made predictions about how food trends would affect future generations, even down to bone structure!  Beverly discusses the following: All over the world, when people resorted to eating foods that weren’t native and natural, it has resulted in profound changes.   Humans weren’t meant to eat grains, which are the seeds of grasses meant for grazing animals. From her experience, EVERYONE has some sort of gluten allergy, but some are much more severe than others. Many bone structure changes over generations can be attributed to diets lacking in vitamins, especially vitamin D and K. The link between vitamins D and K and calcium absorption can be clearly seen in human facial bone structure! There are ways to ensure proper amounts of necessary vitamins and minerals.  Listen to Beverly’s tips for further information! It’s important to GET the proper nutrients, but also to live a lifestyle that utilizes them for maximum absorption. Vegetables should be steamed/cooked for maximum nutrition, as opposed to eating them mainly raw. Chronic illnesses disappear when drastic diet changes take place. Don’t miss what Beverly teaches about the connection between vitamin K, TMJ, and brain stem issues!  She also shares her TOP TIPS about how to change your diet for optimum health!  Listen to our conversation to learn more! About Beverly Beverly Meyer is an MBA, a Clinical and Holistic Nutritionist in San Antonio, Texas, and a passionate advocate for the art of self-care. In practice since 1985, her Natural Health approach seeks alternative health solutions, not just symptom relief. Her clinic, the Diet & Health Center, is located in one of the largest natural health centers in Texas, which she opened in 2009. She is also the host of the popular internet radio show and podcast, Primal Diet - Modern Health. Beverly's DVD The Diet For Human Beings DVD will help you change your life as quickly as you want to. I’ll tell you WHY you want to eliminate foods that Humans never ate until 10,000 – 13,000 years ago. And HOW to change your diet correctly. The Diet For Human Beings is the way Humans are built to eat, a diet similar to the Paleo Diet, also known as an Ancestral Diet, or the Primal Blueprint Diet. It explains how humans ate before agriculture and the domestication of animals, and why our digestive systems prefer animal proteins, fats and fresh plants. Warning Do NOT stop taking prescription SSRI's or other antidepressants without a very slow reduction and only with your doctor's knowledge and consent. Sudden cessation of antidepressant medication can have very serious side effects.
