Send us a text On this week's episode "The depth of the gap is more important than the width!" is a common phrase you hear these days from "diastasis recti professionals" but is it actually true? Can diastasis recti cause digestive issues? One "diastasis specialist" claims it could "because muscles aren't working properly and you need muscles to move food through the digestive tract". Let's talk about this a bit because a LOT of women have digestive issues post-partum and, obviously, a lot have diastasis as well. But are they linked??The importance of picking your goal and focusing ONLY on that. I talk about a client with a shoulder injury whom I started working with this week."In the news this week"; This from the Daily Mail (one of the go-to websites for people about health related news, which is a bit of a shame to be honest). A soup and shake diet to beat Type 2 Diabetes. A good idea? And, does it work because the diet is magic or is there something else going on? Our healthcare system treats us like it's one size fits all, yet that's not how true healing works, especially when it comes to chronic conditions. Today's guest will help us understand how to fill the gap we experience with Western medicine, including the difference between signs vs. symptoms, and empowers our individualized healthcare. On this episode of Salad with a Side of Fries, host Jenn Trepeck welcomes Functional Medicine Nutritionist and educator Andrea Nakayama to explore why chronic conditions require more than just a diagnosis and a prescription. They unpack Andrea's “three roots, many branches” model, revealing how digestion, inflammation, and genetics lie at the heart of chronic illness—and how nurturing the "soil" around them can lead to true healing. From nutrition habits to the importance of bio-individuality, this conversation empowers you to become an informed partner in your health care. The Salad With a Side of Fries podcast is hosted by Jenn Trepeck, who discusses wellness and weight loss for real life, clearing up the myths, misinformation, bad science & marketing surrounding our nutrition knowledge and the food industry. Let's dive into wellness and weight loss for real life, including drinking, eating out, and skipping the grocery store. IN THIS EPISODE:(00:00) Intro: Our healthcare system is one size fits all(05:08) Andrea shares her motivation for her journey into functional nutrition, and a discussion of Western medicine(07:41) Should every person receive the same treatment for the same chronic condition(11:45) How to choose a guide in the health equation(16:40) Knowing the difference between your signs vs. symptoms(21:59) Andrea walks us through the “three roots and many branches” model(28:36) The roles digestion and inflammation play in our health(33:37) Tiers to nutrition mastery. Tier one is our non-negotiables(36:40) Don't neglect your passion and purpose(38:48) Andrea's non-negotiable trifecta: Sleep, poop, and blood sugarKEY TAKEAWAYS:Chronic health conditions must be understood through a systems-based lens, not just symptom management. Every chronic issue has three core roots—genes, digestion, and inflammation. Healing begins by nurturing these “roots” and the surrounding “soil,” rather than chasing individual symptoms alone. Western medicine excels in acute care but often falls short in managing chronic conditions. Patients are frequently seen through the lens of their diagnosis rather than as whole individuals, resulting in treatments that overlook their unique health histories and personal needs. One of the most powerful tools patients can use is specific, emotion-free communication based on personal health tracking. By clearly distinguishing between signs (measurable indicators like fever or rash) and symptoms (subjective experiences like fatigue or pain) and offering detailed timelines of when and how issues arise, patients empower providers to better understand and address their unique health needs.Supporting foundational health can start with three simple, non-negotiable nutrition habits: include fat, fiber, and protein at every meal or snack to help stabilize blood sugar; eat the rainbow to boost fiber and phytonutrient intake while feeding your microbiome; and know your yes-no-maybe list to understand better how specific foods impact your body. Tracking what makes you feel great, what doesn't, and what you're unsure about builds awareness and equips you to have more productive, personalized conversations with your healthcare provider.QUOTES: (07:41) “The first two gaps I encountered were that people are treated like their diagnosis. So, when you are in the medical system, you are your endometriosis, your fibroids, your breast cancer, your PMS. You are your symptom. The other gap was that everybody with the same symptom or diagnosis was treated the same.” - Andrea Nakayama(09:34) “A chronic condition means you're sick and you're not getting better. There's things going on for a long time, and our medical system isn't trained to address chronic conditions.” Andrea Nakayama(25:32) “The three roots of any chronic condition are always our genes, digestion and inflammation. All three need to be tended to for the branches to express themselves more fully.” - Andrea Nakayama(36:53) “We have an episode called the Longevity Equation, and one about Blue Zones and one of the big factors there that everybody seems to overlook is community and connection.” - Jenn TrepeckRESOURCES:Become A Member of Salad with a Side of FriesJenn's Free Menu PlanA Salad With a Side of FriesA Salad With A Side Of Fries MerchA Salad With a Side of Fries InstagramNutrition Nugget: Genes and EpigeneticsSalad With a Side of Fries: The Longevity EquationSalad With a Side of Fries: Blue Zones: A Blueprint for Physical and Mental HealthSalad With a Side of Fries: The Down and DirtyGUEST RESOURCES:Andrea Nakayama - WebsiteFunctional Nutrition Alliance - WebsiteAndrea Nakayama - InstagramFunctional Nutrition Alliance - YouTubeAndrea Nakayama - PinterestAndrea Nakayama, Functional Nutritionist & EducatorAndrea Nakayama - Functional Nutrition Alliance | LinkedInGUEST BIOGRAPHY:Andrea is a Functional Medicine Nutritionist and educator who has led thousands of clients and teaches even more coaches and clinicians worldwide. His patients weren't getting better; in fact, they were getting worse. After driving the same people to the hospital repeatedly, and watching most of them get sicker or die, he left Paramedics and went into personal training. After working with hundreds of clients, he realized that the common denominator for his clients' health issues, including skin issues, brittle hair, hormones, weight loss resistance, etc., was related to nutrition, gut health and stress. Josh went back to school and became a Holistic Nutritionist and specialized in gut health. He had numerous clients who were getting relief, but he quickly realized the extent of digestive issues with his clients who were living confined to their houses, with up to 50 bowel movements a day, crippling pain and brain fog, who were afraid to leave their house for fear of having accidents. Let's set the stage and talk about Good Digestion vs. Bad…To understand what goes wrong with digestion, it is important to understand how it works. As food mixed with saliva enters the stomach, it is broken down into small particles by stomach acid, then by enzymes produced by the pancreas and bile produced by the liver. “Good” bacteria (flora) in the small intestine complete the job of breaking down nutrients so that they can be absorbed. Indigestible parts of food, such as fiber, and other waste products are pushed into the colon where they remain until eliminated. It also serves as a barrier to prevent undigested food, large molecules and foreign substances, such as harmful bacteria and yeast, from getting through. When the lining of the small intestine becomes irritated and inflamed, it is unable to do its job properly. As a result, bacteria and undigested food “leak” into the bloodstream. Officially this is called increased intestinal permeability, but more often the problem is called leaky gut syndrome.Learn more about Dr. Mark Stengler, NMDLearn more about The Holistic Guide to Gut HealthEmerald Labs Leaky Gut Health can be found at Sprouts, Natural Grocers, and other Natural Health retailers nationwide.Buy direct and get 20% off at Emeraldlabs.com when using the code: Forever

Do you suffer from age-related aches and pains that traditional stretching or medications won't relieve? Are you doing all the sports recovery things and still feel pain? It's possible that the cause isn't actually aging, but because your body is in a state of fight-or-flight. Tune into this episode and discover how simple posture adjustments and diaphragmatic breathing can transform your physical performance and well-being.In this episode of Salad with a Side of Fries, host Jenn Trepeck welcomes Dr. Amy Novotny, founder of the PABR® Institute. Together they explore a naturalistic approach to pain relief, stress reduction, and overall wellness. Dr. Novotny shares her groundbreaking work on how altering your breathing mechanics and ribcage positioning can shift the body from a fight-or-flight state to a state of rest and relaxation, helping to reduce muscle tension and improve physical performance. By addressing the autonomic nervous system this approach can relieve digestive issues, and decrease the impact of chronic stress, and this episode offers insightful strategies for relieving pain, improving sleep, and even overcoming trauma-related physiological responses—all without the need for traditional stretching or medications. The Salad With a Side of Fries podcast is hosted by Jenn Trepeck, discussing wellness and weight loss for real life, clearing up the myths, misinformation, bad science & marketing surrounding our nutrition knowledge and the food industry. Let's dive into wellness and weight loss for real life, including drinking, eating out, and skipping the grocery store. IN THIS EPISODE: (05:27) Amy shares her professional journey(09:47) The three main components of the autonomic nervous system. Amy explains the results of a patient changing their breathing mechanics(15:15) Amy explains muscle contraction and why it's worse with age and gives an example of how to relax the breastbone(26:47) What should you notice about back muscle tension (29:11) Belly breathing versus diaphragmatic breathing and how chewing and swallowing impacts your TMJ jointKEY TAKEAWAYS: Dr. Amy Novotny discovered that altering her ribcage position and breathing mechanics allowed her to shift from a fight-or-flight state (sympathetic) to a state of rest-and-relaxation (parasympathetic), significantly reducing muscle tension and enhancing her physical performance without traditional stretching or rehabilitation techniques.Dr. Novotny's work highlights how chronic stress and muscle tension, especially in the abdominal region, can contribute to digestive issues. People can naturally relieve physical tension, improve digestion, and even overcome trauma-related physiological responses by addressing posture and breathing mechanics.Unlike voluntary muscle contractions (e.g., lifting an object), emotional stress triggers involuntary muscle contractions that can persist unnoticed. Over time, this accumulated tension can lead to chronic pain, which is often mistaken for age-related discomfort.QUOTES: (06:11) “I realized if I changed my breathing mechanics, very different than breath work, but if I changed my mechanics of how I held my rib cage and how that affected my diaphragm, I could run eight miles in 55 minutes, get off the treadmill and not have to stretch.” Dr. Amy Novotny(20:45) “You must physically train your body to get in the correct position again.” Dr. Amy Novotny(28:51) “There are specific techniques that can help us hone that interoception.” Jenn Trepeck(33:52) “Diarrhea, constipation, all those types of things as we know, are also connected to trauma." Jenn Trepeck.(34:45) “I'm a big fan of playing with it. See what happens. This week we are talking about the Vagus Nerve. The vagus nerve (10th cranial nerve) is a critical part of the autonomic nervous system, responsible for regulating vital functions such as heart rate, digestion, and respiration. It extends from the brainstem (medulla oblongata) through the neck and chest to the abdomen, with motor and sensory fibers allowing communication between the brain and organs. The vagus nerve has two branches—left and right—which overlap in regulating autonomic functions. Functions and Importance Cardiac and Pulmonary Regulation: The left vagus nerve primarily innervates the heart, while the right focuses on the lungs, though both contribute to overall regulation. Digestive System Support: It promotes digestion by increasing blood flow to the gastrointestinal tract and stimulating enzyme release. Mental Health and Inflammation: The vagus nerve influences mood, anxiety, and stress by connecting to brain areas that regulate emotions. It also modulates inflammation, reducing pro-inflammatory molecules. Enteric Nervous System Connection: Acting as a bridge between the brain and the "second brain" in the gut, the vagus nerve ensures coordination of digestive processes. Vulnerability to Injury Due to its extensive pathway, the vagus nerve is prone to injury from trauma, surgery, infections, tumors, or certain medical conditions. Common causes include: Trauma: Accidents, falls, or sports injuries affecting the neck or chest. Surgical Complications: Procedures in the neck, chest, or abdomen can unintentionally damage the nerve. Medical Conditions: Disorders such as gastric ulcers, reflux, or tumors may affect the nerve. Infections like Lyme disease or meningitis are also potential causes. Idiopathic Cases: Sometimes, the cause of vagus nerve injury remains unknown, requiring further investigation. Symptoms of Vagus Nerve Injury Injury symptoms depend on the severity and location of damage and may include: Cardiovascular: Rapid or irregular heartbeat, blood pressure changes. Digestive: Bloating, constipation, diarrhea, or difficulty swallowing. Voice and Throat: Hoarseness, voice changes. General: Anxiety, depression, or excessive sweating. Diagnosis and Management Diagnosing vagus nerve damage involves imaging, nerve conduction studies, and blood tests to assess functionality. Early detection is crucial for effective management and preventing complications. Prompt medical intervention can improve symptoms and enhance quality of life. Understanding the vagus nerve's anatomy and functions underscores its significance in maintaining overall health, aiding healthcare professionals in diagnosing and addressing related dysfunctions.
Ep. 91- Pregnancy & Postpartum - Exercise, Digestive Issues, Creatine, Bounce Back Culture with Holley Samuel MEd, RD, CSSD, CPT by Erin Kenney, MS, RD, LDN, HCP
After beginning his career as a paramedic, Josh Dech quickly became disillusioned with what he saw as “sick care,” observing that many patients were getting worse instead of better. This led him to shift paths into personal training, where he helped clients like Lynne, a 59-year-old who, after intensive work on her health, went from taking 26 medications daily to breaking records in powerlifting.Inspired by this success, Josh dove into holistic health and nutrition, recognizing that gut health, nutrition, and stress were the common threads among various health challenges. Now specializing in gut health, Josh has dedicated his career to helping individuals with conditions like IBS and Inflammatory Bowel Disease (IBD), namely Crohn's and Colitis. He's seen profound transformations in his clients—adults reclaiming their independence, children finally able to run and play—experiences that fuel his passion to prove that gut diseases don't have to be debilitating.Find him at https://gutsolution.ca. Happy Satiated Saturday! As many of you know, this Somatic Eating® journey all started for me when I began to have severe digestive issues in my teenage years and early 20's. During that time, I was doing everything I could. I explored Ayurveda, cleansing, detoxing, the GAPS diet, the low FODMAP diet, I cut out gluten and dairy, and while some of these things helped or at least taught me something about my body, the digestive issues continued. It wasn't until I started somatic therapy that things began to change. As I came to terms with what I grew up around was traumatic, I had more compassion for my body and my digestive issues that were my body's way of telling me all along it didn't feel safe. What I have seen is that somatics, trauma work, and nervous system healing are missing pieces on a digestive and food healing adventureIn this week's Satiated Podcast episode, I chat with Miriam Jacobson, triple board-certified functional medicine dietitian, breathwork facilitator, and the founder of Every Body Bliss about: The connection between digestive issues and traumaThe impact of trauma on the vagus nerveHow to support your vagus nerveHow our pace and environment can affect the function of our digestive tractThe importance of tears when healingYou can also read the transcript to this week's episode here: https://www.stephaniemara.com/blog/trauma-digestive-issues-and-the-vagus-nerveWith Compassion and Empathy, Stephanie Mara FoxKeep in touch with Miriam:Website: https://www.everybodybliss.com Linkedin: https://www.linkedin.com/in/miriam-jacobson-10066555 Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/everybodybliss/ Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/everybodybliss1Support the showKeep in touch with Stephanie Mara:Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/_stephaniemara/Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/stephaniemarafoxWebsite: https://www.stephaniemara.com/https://www.somaticeating.com/Linkedin: https://www.linkedin.com/in/stephmara/TikTok: https://www.tiktok.com/@stephaniemarafoxContact: support@stephaniemara.comSupport the show:Become a supporter: https://www.buzzsprout.com/809987/supportMy favorite water filter: https://www.pureeffectfilters.com/#a_aid=somaticeatingReceive 15% off my fave protein powder with code STEPHANIEMARA at checkout here: https://www.equipfoods.com/discount/STEPHANIEMARA?rfsn=7433250.c99684Use my Amazon Affiliate link when shopping on Amazon: https://amzn.to/448IyPl Special thanks to Bendsound for the music in this episode. www.bensound.co...
Thank you for joining us for our 2nd Cabral HouseCall of the weekend! I'm looking forward to sharing with you some of our community's questions that have come in over the past few weeks… Michelle: Hi Dr Cabral :). I was listening to episode 529 the "Food Poisoning Fix". Would you be able to update what Equilife products you would use for an adult? I think they may have new names/ updated formulas since the podcast. Thank you for all you do! Lynette: I've really been trying to eliminate plastic from my kitchen (and life) after hearing you speak about the dangers of plastic on several podcast episodes earlier this year. It's just so hard to find safe replacements for everything. What are your thoughts on melamine and silicone? Are these "safe" plastics? Is using a silicone lid on my ceramic commuter coffee cup safe? What about silicone backware? What about melamine for outdoor picnics? Thanks for you insight into navigating the world of "safe" plastics! Tana: Hi Stephen, I cannot drink tap water without completely losing my mind. I get crazy emotional and unstable. I drink extremely filtered water (not RO). But if I shower with a filter, I lose all my color and muscle and can't even function and feel completely devoid of all nutrition no matter what I do. I have SIBO and I am waiting on a metals and minerals test to come back. Alicia: Hi Dr Cabral My question is I am reading your Rain Barrel book and I came across the chapter where you talk about medications and quote me if I am wrong but I read that they are only needed in life saving events. I have struggled with my mental health since a teenager. I am 45years old mom with kids that I care for. I have tried to get off of psychiatric medications several times and replace it with natural supplements with little success. It's been very hard and I have responsibilities to maintain. It bothers me to have to take the medications. Do you consider this to be a life saving illness? Any help is most appreciative and I am following your protocols for optimal health! Elaine: Hi Dr. Cabral, 20+ years ago, when I was in my 50s, I had colon cancer and had 10" of my lower large intestine removed. I've had digestive troubles ever since, although one doctor said the cause of my troubles might be because I don't have a gall bladder. It was removed a few years before I had colon cancer. Now I am in my 70s and am having trouble with neuropathy. My doctor said my vitamin B12 levels were low, so prescribed a high dosage thinking that would help. But the B12 seems to be making my digestive troubles worse. I'm wondering if not having part of my large intestine could be preventing me from absorbing vitamins and causing digestive issues? What would you recommend for figuring out the root cause of my stomach issues and my neuropathy? Thanks! What keeps the CEOs of beverage conglomerates like The Coca-Cola Company, Pepsico, and Anheuser-Busch up at night worrying? I'd guess you initially considered the normal propaganda that “sugar is bad” or “alcohol is terrible,” but there might be a bubblier culprit that ends up creating the most discomfort. Today, around two-thirds of adults experience regular digestive symptoms like gas, bloating, and abdominal pain. Specifically, the most noticeable rise is in patients experiencing irritable bowel syndrome and GERD. And what does every list on the internet suggest (lifestyle change wise) if you want to help control digestive symptoms? That would be the avoidance of carbonation in soft drinks and beer! So, how long before the newest “trend” in packaged beverages will be calling out carbonation levels on packaging (and marketing)? In today's episode of the Balancing Chaos Podcast, Chad and Kelley sit down with Dr. Christian Gonzalez to discuss the importance of the mind body connection in healing chronic disease. Dr. Christian Gonzalez, aka Dr. G, began his career as a naturopathic doctor in 2014, but it wasn't until his mother passed of cancer that he decided to shift his focus to oncology. Through his work Dr. G has made it his mission for people to understand that the relationships we have with our homes, the environment, and the people in our lives all play a role in the development of chronic disease. As he studied this concept more, Dr. G has become extremely passionate about environmental medicine as well as the mind, body, spirit connection.Throughout the episode today, Kelley, Chad and Dr. G explore the concept of separating oneself from their ego to find inner peace and balance within the physical body. Dr. G shares insights on the mind-body connection and the importance of creating space within the physical body to alleviate stress and thereby help to prevent the onset of chronic disease from hormonal imbalances to cancer. The conversation details everything from what types of symptoms and conditions arise (from cancer to cortisol imbalances and everything in between) when we're not deeply connected to our physical bodies and when we're repressing emotions, how to begin to feel tension within your body and how to process it rather than store it, how to help our children navigate their emotions rather than getting them caught in a generational trauma cycle, the TRUTH about the impact of alcohol on your physical health and what to prioritize if you want to heal a chronic condition. Get ready for an insightful episode that will empower you to explore your emotional and mental health in order to heal your physical body.
