In Part 2 of this sleep anxiety series, Amanda gets practical. She breaks down exactly what to do when you can't fall asleep, what to do when you wake up in the middle of the night, and offers a full toolkit of cognitive, environmental, and somatic practices that shift the conditions for sleep over time. If Part 1 was the understanding, this is the application.Click here to preorder at $50 off (or learn more about) the Ohm Breathing Lamp.ps. this is *not* an affiliate link, I just genuinely love this product3 Takeaways:You can't force sleep, but you can build better conditions for it. The middle-of-the-night wake-up needs a different response than lying there fighting it. Sit up, name the state, meet the sensation, reach for breathwork over your phone, and get up if you're still activated after 20-30 minutes. Every regulated response starts to undo the old pattern.Your daytime is the preparation for your nighttime. Morning sunlight, consistent wake time, movement, processing stress before it accumulates — none of this feels like sleep hygiene but all of it is.CLICK HERE for the full show notes, resources, and 3 tangible takeaways!—Looking for more personalized support? 1:1 Coaching (RESTORE): Learn more or book a free discovery call (HSA/FSA eligible & includes comprehensive bloodwork) Regulated Living Membership: A mental health membership and nervous system healing space (sliding scale pricing available). Check out the full episode: https://greatness.lnk.to/1930DM Dr. Michael Breus makes a wild point early: one sentence from a doctor could make 10mg of Ambien completely useless. That's how much your brain runs the show. Most sleep problems aren't about your mattress or your schedule. They're fear-based. Low-grade anxiety that keeps your heart rate up and your nervous system stuck in fight-or-flight. And when you wake up at 3am? Your brain immediately goes negative. It's wired that way. Breus says your heart rate needs to drop to around 60 bpm before your body will even allow sleep. Flip on the news at night and you're fighting that the whole way down. You need runway to land the plane. Sleep anxiety is one of the most common experiences for people living with chronic stress, anxiety, and dysregulation. In Part 1 of this three-part series, Amanda breaks down why the nervous system is at the center of sleep disruption, the difference between not being able to fall asleep and middle-of-the-night wake-ups, and the primary drivers behind nighttime anxiety. This is the understanding episode — Part 2 brings the tools, and Part 3 is a guided wind-down practice.3 Takeaways:Sleep requires safety, not effort. Your nervous system won't let you go offline until it believes the coast is clear. Sleep disruption during chronic stress isn't a flaw — it's your system doing its job. The path forward is building safety, not trying harder. There are two distinct flavors of sleep anxiety and they feed each other. Not being able to fall asleep and waking in the night share the same root — a nervous system that hasn't received the signal that it's safe to rest.If the middle-of-the-night wake-up is consistent, it's not random. Four primary drivers are worth understanding: dysregulated cortisol, unprocessed stress, conditioned arousal, and blood sugar instability. Knowing which applies to you is where the work starts.CLICK HERE for the full show notes, resources, and 3 tangible takeaways!—Looking for more personalized support? 1:1 Coaching (RESTORE): Learn more or book a free discovery call (HSA/FSA eligible & includes comprehensive bloodwork) Regulated Living Membership: A mental health membership and nervous system healing space (sliding scale pricing available). You already know sleep matters. What you don't know is why you keep waking up at 2 AM, why your tracker is probably lying to you, and why the rules you've been following may not be meant for you. Dr. Michael Breus is one of the world's leading sleep doctors - not just a sleep expert, but a clinical psychologist who actually treats patients and pressure-tests every theory in real life. The difference matters. The rule saying you need a pitch-black, 65-degree room with no TV and no partner? He sleeps with two French bulldogs and a big screen on. His point isn't that sleep hygiene doesn't matter. It's that it has to work for your actual life. One thing that might reshape how you think about your body: every human on earth wakes up between 1 and 3 AM. It's biology. Your core body temperature drops to prevent hypothermia, and your body briefly surfaces. Most people roll over and go back to sleep. If you don't, the fix isn't pills - it's understanding what's happening and using tools like 4-7-8 breathing to lower your heart rate below 60 and let sleep return naturally. Your chronotype - lion, bear, wolf, or dolphin - is genetic. It shifts across your lifetime. Forcing a wolf to be a lion doesn't make them a better performer; it makes them worse. The biggest unlock, according to Dr. Breus, isn't more sleep. It's doing the right things at the right time for your specific biology. Dr. Breus has a five-step daily framework he gives every patient. It's specific, it's sequenced, and most people are violating at least three of the steps without knowing it. Dr. Breus's books: Sleep Drink Breathe: Simple Daily Habits for Profound Long-Term Health Energize!: Go from Dragging Ass to Kicking It in 30 Days The Power of When: Discover Your Chronotype and the Best Time to Eat Lunch, Ask for a Raise, Have Sex, Write a Novel, Take Your Meds, and More The Sleep Doctor's Diet Plan: Lose Weight Through Better Sleep Beauty Sleep: Look Younger, Lose Weight, and Feel Great Through Better Sleep Take The Chronotype Quiz! Staring at the dark and can't sleep because of anxiety? Put the phone down and just listen. You aren't failing at sleep—your mind is simply stuck in a loop. This 10-minute guided meditation for racing thoughts is specifically designed to break that cycle and lead you into a state of natural, restorative rest.Hosted by Martin, a clinical hypnotherapist and former paramedic, this session uses clinical techniques to help you quiet your mind and find calm in the middle of a midnight crisis.
In this episode, I talk about why so many people struggle with sleep anxiety even when they're doing everything "right." You might be following all the sleep hygiene rules, no screens, consistent bedtime, calming routines, and still lying awake, wondering what's wrong. The truth is, for anxious brains, trying too hard to sleep can actually make it harder. Sleep is one of the few biological processes that resists effort, and the more pressure you put on it, the more alert your body becomes.
In Episode 19, we look at sleep anxiety and the question of how to fall asleep when you feel anxious. Many people with anxiety disorders become preoccupied with sleep, trying to optimise it, worrying about not getting enough, or fearing that poor sleep will make anxiety worse. In this episode, I explore how this fixation can become part of the problem. We look at the role of attention, the urge to force sleep, and how these patterns can turn into subtle compulsions. I also touch on the shift required in the body's state for sleep to occur, and why trying to control this often backfires.Drawing on both professional insight and personal experience, this episode aims to change your relationship with sleep rather than give another set of rules to follow. Keywords:sleep anxiety, insomnia anxiety, how to fall asleep, anxiety at night, panic attacks at night, overthinking at night, anxiety disorder, threat response, intrusive thoughts, OCD recovery, Pure O, anxiety therapist, anxiety podcast, sleep and anxiety, forcing sleep, night anxiety

Anxiety and insomnia aren't always a mindset problem—they can be chemistry and nervous-system overload. In Healthy Mind, Healthy Life, hosted by Avik, nutritionist Beverly Meyer unpacks GABA and the body's “calm” circuitry. This episode is for anyone who feels wired at night, overwhelmed by thoughts, or tired of chasing quick fixes. You'll hear about sensory overload, the habit of catastrophizing, and practical ways to think about support through food, rest, and daily habits. About the Guest: Beverly Meyer is a clinical nutritionist and health educator (in practice since the 1980s) and the host of Primal Diet, Modern Health. Episode Chapter: 00:02:56 — Stress and poor sleep as signals, not “normal life” 00:05:35 — Beverly's burnout chapter and the moment she had to stop 00:07:26 — Discovering GABA and why it changed everything 00:08:57 — The big misconception: anxiety isn't only psychological 00:12:39 — Catastrophizing and how to return to the rational mind 00:14:51 — Fight/flight/freeze: what chronic stress does over time 00:20:23 — “PharmaGABA,” the blood-brain barrier, and bedtime calm tools Key Takeaways: Anxiety can be a body signal, not a personal failure. Notice catastrophizing early and return to the next rational step. Ongoing stress keeps fight/flight/freeze switched on; recovery needs real downtime. Avoid miracle “hacks”; build calm with consistent nutrition, sleep, and habits. For many of us, this coming weekend marks the start of Daylight Saving Time, when we “spring forward” and move our clocks ahead by an hour. While the extra evening daylight can be one of the joys of the summer months, the time change has been known to disrupt our sleep. Last year we sat down with neurobiologist Jamie Zeitzer, a leading expert on sleep, to talk about practical strategies for getting a better night's rest. As we approach this transition, it's the perfect time to revisit that conversation. We hope you'll add this episode to your podcast queue and give it another listen this weekend. In this week's episode, I sit down with Kate Blyth, a New Zealand based sleep specialist and founder of Intuitive Sleep, to explore why sleep has become one of the most misunderstood and difficult parts of modern life.We know more about sleep science than ever before, yet rates of insomnia, anxiety, burnout and non-restorative sleep continue to rise. Many people feel exhausted despite sleeping, stuck in cycles of racing thoughts, broken sleep and nightly frustration. Kate shares her personal journey with sleep difficulties and explains how fear, pressure and misinformation about sleep quietly keep people awake. We unpack why sleep is not something you can force, hack or optimise your way into. Kate explains how anxiety fuels insomnia, why sleep quality matters more than sleep quantity, and how parts of the wellness industry have unintentionally increased sleep stress through trackers, supplements and rigid bedtime routines. We also break down common myths around melatonin, blue light exposure, sleep hygiene and nighttime routines and why trying harder to sleep often backfires. This conversation goes deeper into the biology of sleep, including circadian rhythms, sleep drive and the role of light, movement, stress and daily habits in regulating healthy sleep patterns. We also discuss sleep apnea, why it is often missed or misunderstood, and the key red flags that are worth paying attention to.At its core, this episode is about removing pressure and rebuilding trust in the body's natural ability to rest. Because sleep is not a performance or a productivity tool - it is a biological process that works best when we stop fighting it.If you are struggling with sleep, tired of chasing perfect routines or simply want to understand how sleep actually works and how to sleep better in a noisy world, this conversation will help you turn the noise down and reconnect with rest.Inside this podcast:- Why sleep anxiety keeps people awake- The difference between sleep quality and sleep quantity- How fear and pressure disrupt natural sleep- Why supplements and trackers often backfire- How to reconnect with your body's natural sleep rhythmConnect with Kate:Instagram → https://bit.ly/4t3veIe Website → https://www.intuitivesleep.co.nz/ Connect with Steve:Instagram → https://bit.ly/3KARQhR LinkedIn → https://bit.ly/48sw8Vj Episode Highlights00:00:00 - Episode Starts Here00:03:30 - The noise of modern life and nervous system overload00:07:00 - Why sleep is an active biological process00:10:00 - Fear, anxiety and the psychology of insomnia00:13:30 - Why sleep quality matters more than hours00:16:00 - The problem with sleep optimisation culture00:19:00 - Sleep Apnea myths and missed diagnoses00:23:00 - Night awakenings and adrenaline responses00:27:00 - Why trying harder to sleep makes it worse00:30:00 - The limits of supplements and trackers00:34:00 - Why mornings matter more than nights00:38:00 - Light exposure and circadian rhythm00:42:00 - Exercise, sleep drive and recovery00:46:00 - Teenagers, aging and changing sleep needs00:50:00 - Consistency over perfection00:54:00 - Returning to fundamentals of rest00:56:30 - Red flags worth investigating00:59:00 - Final reflections on trust and restABOUT THE PODCAST SHOWThe Noise of Life is a podcast that shares real stories, raw truths, and remarkable growth. If you've ever laid awake at 3AM, counting sheep, overanalyzing your life, and stressing that you'll be a zombie tomorrow, this episode, part 2 of our series on sleep, is one you don't want to miss.Today, Susan and Kate sit down with the Dr. Christopher Winter, neurologist, sleep medicine specialist, and author of The Sleep Solution and The Rested Child. He's the go-to expert for pro athletes, firefighters, and anyone who's ever wondered, “What's wrong with my sleep?”But here's the twist: according to Dr. Winter, your sleep might not be “broken” at all. In fact, the way we think about sleep, our fears, expectations, and obsession with perfection, might be the real problem. This isn't another conversation about blue light and blackout curtains. Dr. Winter flips the script on everything you think you know about insomnia, sleep hygiene, and the infamous “8-hour rule.” You'll laugh, you'll learn, and you might just stop fearing those restless nights once and for all.Because maybe, just maybe… your body knows exactly what it's doing. In this episode:Insomnia isn't a disease, it's a perception. Most people who say they “can't sleep” are actually sleeping more than they realize. The problem isn't sleep, it's the anxiety about sleep. The real secret? Be happy awake or asleep. When you stop fearing wakefulness, insomnia loses its power. This conversation will make you rethink everything you thought you knew about sleep, and maybe even help you stop fighting with your pillow.P.S. This is part 2 of our sleep series! Check out last week's episode with Dr. Kirk Parsley for another perspective on sleep!Learn more about our guest Dr. Christopher WinterDr. Christopher Winter has practiced sleep medicine and neurology in Charlottesville, Virginia since 2004, but has been involved with sleep medicine and sleep research since 1993. What if the monsters that haunt us at night aren't supernatural at all, but reflections of our own minds? In this episode of The Aging Well Podcast, Dr. Jeff Armstrong sits down with clinical psychologist Dr. Brian A. Sharpless to explore the fascinating intersection of sleep, anxiety, and fear. With decades of clinical experience, Dr. Sharpless has studied both common and rare sleep disorders—from insomnia and night terrors to the little-known “exploding head syndrome.” Drawing from his book Monsters on the Couch and years of research, he shares how anxiety, trauma, and unresolved inner conflict often shape what keeps us awake at night.Together, they unpack how sleep disturbances affect not just our nights but also our long-term health and aging. You'll also hear why understanding fear and the unconscious mind can help us move toward better sleep, stronger mental health, and ultimately, aging well.Learn more about Dr. Sharpless at https://briansharpless.com/BUY Monsters on the Couch and other books by Dr. Brian A. In this episode, I explore what I consider the single most powerful tool for overcoming insomnia — your response. When it comes to long-term recovery, it's not about finding a magic sleep trick or trying harder to force sleep. It's about how you respond to the experience of insomnia itself. We'll look at what happens when the brain's hyperarousal system misinterprets sleeplessness as danger and how to shift that conditioned response back toward safety. You'll learn how cultivating awareness, compassion, and curiosity rewires the brain through self-directed neuroplasticity — and why it's not about doing more, but about doing less and trusting your body's innate wisdom. If you've ever felt trapped in the cycle of trying to sleep harder, this episode offers a refreshing and hopeful perspective that can help you step off the hamster wheel and truly recover.Takeaways:Your response is your most powerful recovery tool.Safety, not effort, is what restores natural sleep.Compassion and awareness are the antidotes to hyperarousal. You can teach your brain that it's safe to sleep.Related Episode Links & Resources:Episode #1: Redefining Insomnia: My 3 Core PhilosophiesEpisode #16: How to Use Indifference to Overcome Sleep AnxietyBook Recommendation: Man's Search for Meaning by Victor FranklConnect with Beth:
What if the secret to deep, restorative sleep begins at sunrise, not bedtime? In this grounding episode, I sit down with sleep educator and former insomniac Mollie Eastman to explore why rest is a skill, and how light, food, temperature, and mindset shape the way we sleep. Together, we uncover why so many of us feel tired but wired, how morning sunlight and meal timing set the stage for deep rest, and what to do when you wake up at 3 a.m. Mollie shares compassionate, science-backed insights on alcohol, blue light, circadian rhythms, and the nervous system, showing us that sleep isn't about perfection, but about remembering how to work with our bodies instead of against them. If you're ready to restore your nights and reclaim your energy, this episode is for you. Neurobiologist Jamie Zeitzer is an expert on sleep – or, more accurately, an expert on why so many can't sleep. He notes that, ironically, it's often anxiety about sleep that prevents good sleep. In short, we lose sleep over lost sleep. Wearables and other tools can help but only to a point, and medications do not induce natural sleep. Instead, he counsels consistent routines, less stimulation at bedtime, and cognitive behavioral therapy to reduce worry about insomnia. Unfortunately, you can't work harder to get better sleep – you have to learn to relax, Zeitzer tells host Russ Altman on this episode of Stanford Engineering's The Future of Everything podcast.Have a question for Russ? Send it our way in writing or via voice memo, and it might be featured on an upcoming episode. Please introduce yourself, let us know where you're listening from, and share your question. A few bad nights during a stressful period triggered Tim's struggle with insomnia. The more he tried to fix his sleep, the more difficult it became, the more power and influence it had over his life, and the more anxiety he experienced. Tim's transformation began when he realized that trying to control sleep was keeping him stuck and that his response to the fear of not sleeping was a bigger problem than being awake at night. As Tim relinquished control over sleep and was less resistant to experiencing insomnia and all the thoughts and feelings that come with it, insomnia began to lose the stranglehold it once had over his life — and sleep started to show up all by itself. Then, when you are super relaxed, I read a message, from you to your subconscious mind asking for it to regulate it's threat alerts to you. Includes a subliminal countdown into sleep too. Please note: Muscle tensing should be minimal.Warning: Before starting Progressive Muscle Relaxation (PMR), it is recommended to consult with your General Practitioner (GP), especially if you have any pre-existing health conditions, such as heart problems, high blood pressure, respiratory issues, or back problems. PMR involves deliberate muscle tension, release, and a short, minor back stretch, which could potentially affect your circulation, heart rate, or spinal health. Your doctor can advise whether this relaxation technique is suitable for you and suggest modifications if needed. Always prioritize safety and seek professional guidance to ensure PMR is performed safely.GO AD-FREE! JOIN OUR APPLE PREMIUM SUBSCRIPTION!
