Send us a textThere seem to be many views on what should be the goal of exercise! Should you aim, above all, at flexibility, or should it be cardiovascular ability? Or should you shoot for a balance of strength, flexibility, and cardiovascular (aerobic) fitness! Well, obviously it seems to me, that a balanced approach is better- after all, all of these three components are crucial in their own ways. But together, they are the key to ultimate fitness, right? Well- kind of…It used to be axiomatic that running, particularly long distance running, conferred the most health advantages! A strong, enduring cardiovascular system would keep you from getting a heart attack, and that is the ultimate goal…However, it turns out that endless distance running also consumes your musculature and strength, while simultaneously rendering you more and more inflexible and lowering your immune response to many diseases, and cancer itself! It also, over long distances and years, destroys your knee and hip joints. And the cardio benefits seem to be very temporary: once you stop running (from your self-inflicted destruction), those benefits disappear.Flexibility as a sole benefit is very slight. The ability to bend your body and limbs over a wide range of motion might seem impressive and desirable, (especially after you have destroyed most of your flexibility by long-distance running alone), by itself to become a kind of ‘yogi' like this is more a type of parlor trick, other than the sum of being fit. It just doesn't make you capable of much at all!No, ironically, the number one goal of overall fitness is to build strength and muscle! This is the last component that has been considered to be important in the last few decades. But, as you age, it becomes apparent that strength training is by far the most important thing you can do. To be self-sufficient and vital, you need strength above all. Muscle tissue is what will burn calories, even when you are not exercising, thus keeping you from becoming obese. Of course, strength is also what keeps you mobile and walking, able to lift heavy items and move things as well as yourself. The main goal of the elderly, and those of us who will all eventually become elderly, is actually to build strength and muscle tissue. Strength training is what keeps us out of the nursing home, and in our own homes! Everything else: sports of all types - running, basketball, racket sports, gymnastics, horseshoes, basketball and other “ball” sports- they might be fun, and improve us in some subtle ways; but they do not give us true, measurable, and long-lasting benefits.Only strength training does that, and it can be done for our entire lives! In one study, researchers compared muscle building ability in women in their 90's to those in their 20's, and found that the elders built muscle and strength as fast as those much younger! This shows us how much muscle is valued and needed by the body, providing we induce the stimulus by strength training to show that the muscle is needed. Muscle that can keep us from falling, helping us to keep our balance, and also building our bone strength along with our musculatures. Strength training is indeed crucial!Support the show
Send us a textOne piece of misinformation that has been around for a long time is the idea that strength training workouts need to be…LONG! And I mean HOURS long…I fell for this myself in my younger days. I mean, if 1 hour of intense workout exercises is good, well, 2 hours is even better, right? And the big one: if 3 workouts per week is enough for Steve Reeves and his ilk, well why not be like Arnold and Zane, and workout 6 days per week, sometimes twice per day! This is all sad, and ridiculous, really. Especially for average people, who don't want to win bodybuilding contests, but just want to be strong and healthy for a lifetime! I remember reading about Jean Claude von Damme, and how he worked out 6 hours per DAY!! What a joke, really…I'm here to give you a liberating philosophy of strength training: You can reach your ultimate potential, and train for your whole life long, by training for 20 to 30 minutes, 2 to three times per week! Really. I now train my lower body one day for about that long, and my upper body for the same time frame. I train, skip a day, and then train again. My weights and gymnastic rings are all set up in my basement, and I just walk downstairs, and start working…Very convenient, quickly done, and very productive! Today, for instance, I took off two days between workouts, since leg training sometimes is more draining than upper body. No matter; I just try to feel how I am recovering, and judge accordingly. It really is surprising to learn that, when you workout really intensely, a short duration is really all you need, and really all your body can stand! An intense stimulation of the targeted musculature must necessarily be brief, and is all that you really need or want.Just as you don't need a ton of food to grow and recover, you don't need a TON of exercise to stimulate gains! Just make sure that the food you do eat is mainly protein, meat, eggs, cheese and seafood, and you will be very strong and healthy…Supplements are good too, so take vitamin D, magnesium and potassium, vitamin C and you will have all you need to grow, thrive, and be super healthy and strong!!That is really all there is to it! It's really not that complicated, my friends. My only qualification is that I also work out every morning, first thing, for about an hour…But that is my joy and pleasure- working out in front of the television, mainly with stretching and virtual resistance exercises, that feel amazing and make you like a cat, twisting and stretching to make you supple, and feel like you are a free creature of the jungle! You learn to use the muscles you build strength training like a feline, feeling alive in your body, injury free and vital! To me, that is the ultimate, lifelong goal of physical culture.Support the show
Send us a textI have worked out with weights, and then with calisthenics for many, many years. Starting in my teens, and continuing now, as I prepare to turn 73 in April. My results have been phenomenal, and as I continue to work out daily, I have turned more and more away from weights and equipment, and more and more rely on calisthenics and virtual resistance. I have acquired some injuries over time, and the most nagging is the shoulder. Everyone who does heavy pressing movements, particularly the bench press, has problems with the rotator cuff of their shoulders. Me included, even though I stopped bench pressing long ago, in favor of gymnastic ring pushups and dips. These movements are far superior to bench presses, and are highly recommended to all! Far more natural in movement; the joints are also brought through a full range of motion. However, shoulder injuries will haunt you if your exercise in the standard manner when young, or from sports or other injuries. What then? Should you use bands and/or dumbbells to do lighter, therapeutic types of rotator cuff exercises? Well, you can… but I have found a better method. Far safer, and no equipment is needed.Virtual resistance is applying force through the limb itself. For the shoulders, just stand relaxed, legs shoulder width apart. Move your arms backwards, from down by your hips, applying force simply by flexing as you move. You can make it as hard, or easy, as you like, simply by applying internal force. Move forward in an arc, as if you are doing a fly, followed by a row. Do one rep, slowly with internal resistance, forward and then back. Move your arms up a bit, and repeat. Then, move up some more (higher) and repeat. Then, repeat downwards, for five sets, up and then down. Do maybe five cycles, upwards to the sides of your body. Do this daily, or at least a few times per week. Trust me; this will cure your rotator cuff shoulder problems completely! Gently, yet inevitably, without risk of further injury. You will probably realize that this form of exercise can be done throughout your body, not only on your shoulders. Try doing a curl, without weights, but only with internally generated resistance. You can make it as hard, or as easy, as you'd like! Try it with flies, and military presses- generate a lot of resistance. It is just as effective as weights or pulley machines! You can also replicate squats, and deadlifts- generate the resistance within your own body. You can also do bent rows, shrugs, and even pressing outwards, imitating the bench press- but without risk of injury, since the ‘weight', or resistance, can be nullified in an instant by you, yourself, internally! And there you have it! Not just a shoulder rehab although that is a perfect place to start, and to show yourself just how well it works. Virtual Resistance! Now, I don't stop there: I also do gymnastic ring exercises, dips, presses, and pull-ups, among others. But the fact remains that Virtual Resistance, by itself, can replicate any other exercises, and can do so with perfect safety, and is the ideal way to recover from injuries.Learn it, and incorporate it into your fitness strategy!Support the show
Send us a textOur country has been failing, for quite some time. The democrats have become a new party, completely: from the “party of the working man”, which was never really true at all, they have fallen to the level of a totally leftist, socialist/communist totalitarian state, ready to rule over us all!Donald Trump has changed all that. Not that he's a perfect person, no one says that. But, he is a real, honest-to-God person that represents us all, in particular real, honest-to-God workers: those of us who actually do a real day's work, and are proud of it!NO DEI bullshit, or affirmative action, or anything FAKE. We are back on the track of MERIT to accomplish things, we shall return to honesty and reality. We were dangerously going down the path of the French Revolution, where all of history, and Western civilization itself, was being questioned and reinvented! An awful nightmare, where the basic tenets of civilization, like the days of the week, were being questioned and reinvented.Just as our own nightmare democrat leftists, were questioning basic gender rules, and leading us into a nightmare scenario of no men, and no women, but instead into a hellish dreamscape of no rules or reality, but instead a land of lunacy where the state decides what is reality. It started with Obama, who was awful from the start, and it has continued until now…I'll bet you probably wonder why on this fitness and health oriented podcast I am bringing up such things…. Well, I will say that we were literally on the brink of civilization failing, and now we are saved, for the moment! That is how extreme our situation was, and only now are we starting to see the glimmer of light ahead…Even in the choice of Robert Kennedy Jr. we are being shown a path to health! He is a path to sanity and life, and thank GOD! The Democrats were leading us into the land of endless medication, and processed food- now we have a chance to escape this nightmare scenario.Rfk jr. plans to lead us into an uncontaminated world, a world where glyphosate is not pumped into our grains and environment without restriction, poisoning us all. A world where proven carcinogens like various food dyes are banned as well, and a harmful chemical like fluoride, (which does NOT protect dental health!), is banned from our water supplies, as it should be. And this is all at Trump's behest, as he hires the very best and brightest to run our governmental agencies! Biden and his traitorous administration is even now selling the fencing we need to protect our borders for pennies on the dollar- just to harm Trump's administration and keep them from efficiently building the immigration fencing that the American people want and need. This is blatant criminality! Our future, my fellow Americans, is firmly in our past- we should expect and relish the chance to reenter the American 1950's, that halcyon time when women stayed home and raised families, and men supported those families on one salary that was not over-taxed so that both spouses needed to work, and a time when patriotism was a given, because our country was a golden beacon to the rest of the world! We WERE a shining beacon to the rest of the world, a bright light in the pantheon of Western Civilization- and now, under Trump's leadership- we can and will be again!!Support the show
Send us a textI think this is a sane recommendation for any person: work out sensibly for one hour, every day of your life! Not too extreme, and not wimpy- you need this hour for strength and flexibility training, not mindless cardio, where you run like a brainless chicken. Such “training” only drains you, diminishes your muscle, not build it, and ignores strength building (the essence of truly working out!).A true workout is very mindful. You need to ‘think into' your muscles, flexing them slowly, and intentionally, throughout each exercise. This can be using weights, barbells and dumbbells, or bands, calisthenics, or a myriad of machines. What you use is not really that important at all- sales people will tell you otherwise, but trust me: it's the intensity that matters. Time under tension, if you will.I use a combination, gymnastic rings hung up high are actually a near genius exercise device! Instantly scalable, from very easy, to superhuman level. All in a rather cheap, portable package that never wears out, and can target every part of your body. Pushups, pull ups, rows, one-legged squats, dips- you have it all in the rings! Plus, it's silent, and actually kind of fun, in a way…You can also add in other things, like heavy deadlifts (on occasion!), along with Jefferson curls, also called stiff legged deadlifts for the lower back- very effective, and very SAFE! As I have aged, I have stopped doing a full routine, and instead do upper body one workout, and the next workout do lower body. Full body, at least at age 72, is too much; better to split the workout for recovery. To workout for one hour per day should not seem onerous- it is well worth it to spend one hour out of 24, when by doing so you make the other 23 hours far more enjoyable and productive! You will make yourself immune from awful joint replacement operations, and bypass endless diseases of disuse that clog our medical clinics! Each day, what works for me, and has for many years, is to get up, and stretch and do what I call ‘virtual resistance' in front of the television. This is simply flexing your limbs, for repetitions, as if you were lifting weights. You supply the resistance from within as you move. Try it with curls: just curl you arms, as if you hold weights. You can make it as hard as you like, simply by flexing! Do it with curls, military presses, shoulder raises- every exercise there is. Cover the whole body, and you will be drenched in sweat if you did it intensely enough, and on top of it you will feel energized, rather than drained as if you had used actual weights.Do this for about 1/2 hour, while you enjoy your TV program. Then, later that day, go to your rings and weights. Mine are in the basement, yours could be outside, or anywhere really. Rings at least!I also add in, besides ring pushups and pull-ups, etc. : Superslow pull-ups, dips, and military presses! I watch my big clock on the wall, and do military presses with a dowel, slowly, as I resist my super slow movement up, and then down, for one minute, to a minute and a half. You need a power rack for this, but you could do the super slow pull-up slowly on the rings, bending your legs on both the upward, and the lowering portion. Just make it as hard as you can, for both up and down! Then, the super slow dip needs a dip station: I made mine out of plumbing pipe years ago. Just go slowly up, and down, for at least a minute. The beauty is, that there is NO danger of injury, and you are strengthening not only your musculature- but your tendons and ligaments as well! This whole routine should only be anotheSupport the show
As we age, standard medical practice expects us to give up all common sense, and self-determination. They want to “take over” everything, and we are supposed to just acquiesce…I am here to tell you to vehemently protest, and to take charge of your own health and future, just as you hopefully have for your entire life. Modern Medicine is NOT your friend! My uncle Bob Manthey, my mother's older brother, just turned 102 last week. He never saw a medical doctor during his life, except when he enlisted before World War 2. He got mandatory vaccines then, probably for smallpox, tetanus, and cholera. That was the last time he received medical treatment…Uncle Bob became an eye doctor himself after the war, where he served as a Navy Pilot. He was (and is still!) a very intelligent man, and very concerned with natural health! He went on to have 12 children, and a wonderful, healthy, rural life. He started in South Dakota, where he was born, and eventually moved to Kansas City to expand his medical practice.Of course, natural genetics has a lot to do with lifespan. But the way you live, a life in nature on the land, eating a natural ancestral diet while avoiding toxins such as cigarettes, excessive sweets, and participating in natural exercise protocols also has a lot to do with anyone's health!Uncle Bob used to come visit us at my parent's house, and he never failed to give lectures and demonstrations about natural health and its importance! He always posed for pictures with ours and his family, seated cross-legged on the ground, throughout his 90's! He never ceased to amaze me, and still does. Now, he lives with his daughter, and still enjoys dancing and playing music on a number of instruments. He is a role model for us all!Compare this to people today, who go constantly to the doctor and clinic. Whether they have an ailment or not! Colonoscopies, Cat scans, extensive examinations; the list goes on and on…. Trust me, the list is endless, and once they get you in their clutches, they will test and scan endlessly, until all of your money is gone. Even with good insurance, they will take all of your money- even if nothing, ultimately, is really wrong. This is the modern scam. I am here to suggest that you just be like my Uncle Bob! AVOID the doctor. If you break a gone, or are gun-shot- go in. They are Great at such emergency care! But as for granting you health, for making you a vital, healthy, long-lived person? In this, they are without a clue.I am 72 now. My wife of the same age and I have both gotten cataract surgery, and that is a true wonder of modern medicine, just like emergency life saving medicine. In fact, going to an eye doctor is probably the best care you can get- non-invasive, no harm involved, and they can tell by observing your eye health the entire cardiovascular health of your whole body! Just by seeing the condition or the vascular makeup of your eyes. But if you go to a standard medical internal medicine doctor, they just go by charts and generalities. “You are over 50? Take a statin! And blood pressure medications! And see me twice per year, and I'll give you endless meds, forever and ever. You're welcome…”They told my own father that he had high blood pressure his whole life. They said he still did when he died at 98. I call bullshit. No doctor will tell you that high blood pressure happens for a reason. Your body needs blood somewhere, and ups the pressure to get it therSupport the show
We all want to live a good life. We NEED to live a good, successful, in harmony with nature and our neighbors type of life! But, what sort of life should this be? Should we live in accordance with modern tradition, by moving to a major metropolitan area, and get a high paying job, and raise our family either in the city itself, or in the nearby suburbs?NO! What you really want and need, to be healthy and well adjusted, is to live a PALEO LIFE. By this, I mean a life that is in accordance with our evolutionary past. A life that, just like the paleo diet itself, is in the way that we evolved, and and the type of life that we are meant to live. A life that will make us ourselves, our families, and our nearby community all in sync with nature, and will allow us to be the best, most in harmony with our evolution that we can be!What sort of life would this be? We are going back go Ancient Greek, and early Christian ideals here. I believe # 1 would mean a rural, either country or small town type of life. A place where we know our neighbors well, where everyone is as self-sufficient as they can be! A place where all have a voice, and big government is as minimal as it can be. A place in the woods, or in the countryside, far from the inevitable corruption that accompanies metro-types of areas, where there are huge concentrations of people in a smallish area.Look at our big cities of today, everywhere: they have become awful places, in every sense of the word. Out of control crime, de-policing, no punishment for horrible acts, along with horrible schools that teach nothing, and could care less. Big cities are now cesspools of crime, where the most evil and incompetent are put in charge!I see our modern cities in the U.S. where I live now, as akin to old cities of antiquity, that are abandoned and left in the jungles. The builders have left, or been destroyed, and replaced by degenerates, and even subhumans who have wandered into these cities, and pretended, or ‘aped' the former residents, with no knowledge or ability of how to actually maintain or step into the roles of these forebears. They only want the power, the ‘prestige' of the former geniuses, with no responsibilities or anything else. So, where to go? These cities are utterly lost. Rural America is still unspoiled! Go there, and build a life. It is still available, as long as big government, meaning nowadays big Democratic top-down authoritative government if kept at bay!!Smaller cities, particularly in the Midwest and the West are still unsullied, and open to honest settlers. They are basically unchanged, and while ‘liberal' socialist types are everywhere, even here, they are not given free rein! Reason still rules, although liberal/socialistic/communistic nonsense is constantly attacking…Florida is an antidote to the retarded hellhole of what California has become, and so that is certainly an option. You will need to do your homework, but the thing is: at least in the U.S. there are many places where you can still go to live a successful paleo type of life! A life unencumbered by Big Government, and a purposeful breakdown of Western Civilization itself.Go to where small towns, small businesses, and small schools still hold sway! Homeschooling is wonderful, and small towns is very similar to what it was in “Little House on the Prairie”, where local families hired a teacher to teach their children directly, and determined the curriculum. No Teacher's Union was asked for, or wanted! Remember: This is for your own good as well. Each person and family is such communities will need skills to survive! Job skills, for sure. BSupport the Show.
We talk here about what to do to optimize our health and wellness. And rightly so! Eat right, a strongly protein-centric diet. Plenty of micronutrients, from a paleo type of diet. Good sleep, every night, in a dark room, devoid of blue light distractions and screens…Of course, all of these are essential to a healthy life for us and our family! Along with proper strength training, and adequate flexibility. But all of this counts for naught- if we lose our country of Western civilization and all that that has given the world at large!Right now, the Democrat party in the US has proven that they are determined to undermine, and then terminate our country as it has stood since its inception. By erasing our borders through non-enforcement, and allowing unlimited illegal immigration of the uncivilized and unlawful into our country, they have literally turned traitor. Every advantage built into our country by our forefathers is open now to be trashed! Crime is being redefined, and legitimized throughout our nation, particularly in the large cities. Traffic laws are being ignored and punishments are no longer enforced.Hiring is now meant to be done by quotas of race and sex, not by merit. Excellence is suffering; soon to be ruined by such quotas and mandates. We are allowing the 3rd world primitives to enter our developed, civilized space of refinement and privilege. No requirements are being asked, no basic levels of literacy, or knowledge of civics and western civilization are being asked for…Why is this being perpetrated on the American people??Because the Democrats want the votes of what they see as a permanent underclass. A huge group of basically illegal people that are, and will be, eternally beholden to their ‘Masters'; the politicians in the Democrat party that will give them everything they need and want. Forever! This is the bottom line. Sad but very, very true. It is also sad that here, in a basically health and fitness podcast, these political matters should of necessity be brought up. But the truth is that, without our free, clean, and very much Western nation and way of life, all else we desire to achieve and enjoy in our lives is gone- impossible! It would be as if the Persians, long ago, had conquered Greece, and destroyed the freedom and Western way of life they were even then developing for us. It would all just- disappear! The Democrats of today are as the traitors of the past- those who would offer the Persian invaders a secret way into their homelands, for a bribe of golden coins. They were foiled back then: and they need to be stopped now!And this invasion is only part of the horror. The Democrats plan not only to swamp us with invaders, but they also plan to deny us the ability to innovate, and enhance our energy resources so as to deal with transportation and heating and cooling. They raise Climate Change as a false god to which we should sacrifice our technology, which is the undeniable fruit of Western civilization and capitalism. In other words: discard the armor that we have developed that protects us from the undeveloped and primitive of the rest of the world.Even things like allowing biological men to compete with women in women's sports- the Democrats are overwhelmingly in FAVOR of this, and virtually no one else.I could go on. But my point if made: if you want you, and your family, to live a free, healthy life, lived as you have determined is the best for you and yours- Then now is the time. Get rid of Democrats, and strive to live in a Red,Support the Show.
Ever since the paleo diet hit the news and the internet, different iterations and ‘spins' on that format have appeared endlessly. Even at the supermarket, I see magazines in the checkout lane, screaming KETO in large print! “Eat FAT FAT FAT!” is all around, along with Carbs are death! On the next magazine, Ozempic the diet drug is touted. “ Get skinny fast!” Really? They neglect to mention that not only do you need to take the drug for LIFE, but also that you lose muscle as well as fat! (What a wonder drug is THAT??!!Actually, nothing has really changed. The Paleo Diet is still the ancestral human diet, and drugs and ketone inducers should be ignored. The Carnivore diet of all animal products, primarily beef, can be great temporarily, as a kind of reset. But really, an ancestral human diet, a paleo diet, is our long-term sweet spot; a place that humans can live forever. In fact a place where humans have lived forever, and where we can maintain healthy, happy bodies of vigor and resilience for our whole life! All we have to do is eat real, nutritious foods of natural meats and seafood, with a mix of vegetables and some fruits and nuts. Have full fat dairy in the form of cheeses, yogurt, and kefir, and add in exercise of strength training, small amounts of running, and walking, preferably barefoot on the grass. Sleep a good eight hours per night in a blackened room, without checking the clock during sleeping hours! (Really, don't look at the clock at night. That only puts you into a ‘doom loop' where you constantly are checking with mental gymnastics as to ‘how many hours are left til I have to wake up'…. This alone ruins your rest and sleep. Set an alarm if you want or need to- but don't check that clock every time you awaken for a minute! Changing this one habit alone completely rescued my nightly sleep…Stretch daily! Morning stretches done daily in front of the TV, along with a dedicated strength session in your yard, deck, garage or basement are completely mandatory for every human. Without such daily attention to your very humanity, and you will start to break down, slowly but surely. Let your muscles atrophy and so too does your brain, bit by bit. The human body is an intricate balancing act of the proper nutrients, consumed by a body that is stimulated by the proper activity to require those nutrients to fuel and rebuild a sophisticated animal machine. It's kind of like the ‘Dance of Life'!As for drugs, as in ‘diet drugs'? They don't belong in your human body! In fact- NO DRUGS BELONG IN THE HUMAN BODY! That is the ideal, now and forever. If you are taking drugs, either recreational or prescription- get off of them! God made your body as is; he never required man-made drugs for you to thrive. TAKE NO DRUGS!The same goes for surgeries. Most surgeries are optional, and are a way for clinics and hospitals to MAKE MONEY. For instance, you can reverse the need for knee surgery replacement with exercises shown by Ben Patrick on the kneesovertoesguy.com website. Many drugs and surgeries deal with conditions that can be rectified using natural methods that aren't so invasive, expensive, and destructive of the body as those from the clinics! But all of that aside: just lead a natural, ancestral life! Be outside in nature, as much as possible. Garden, play and relax in your yard. Get lots of sunshine, and keep chemicals OFF of your lawn and garden. Be a keen observer of nature- birds, deer, and all the wildlife in your area. Relish it, it is TRUE beauty!Support the Show.
As you go through life, some things are constant. Working out is one constant: your body needs to work out, consume healthy foods, and get ample sleep every day of your life. These things remain the same!I have found that working out for strength and flexibility actually become more important as you progress into your 50's, 60's and beyond. But the amount of stimulation your muscles need for strength decreases, while the stretching required actually increases somewhat. Actually doing a strength session can be very intense, and productive, in less than a half hour! It is the intensity that matters most. Also, recovery from an intense session of strength training needs to be longer than when you are younger. I have also found that really draining movements, like heavy squats and deadlifts need to be far less frequent. In your senior years, you probably have all of the sheer bulk you would want, anyway! To be strong and yet defined is far more desirable as you get older.I have pretty much eliminated, at age 72, the barbell back squat, the deadlift, and the bench press. Pushups on the gymnastic rings, along with flies and other movements are preferable to bench presses, and can be done at many angles. Single leg or ‘sissy' squats using the rings for balance are also much better for your knees, and take the emphasis off of your glutes and put it on to the front thigh. Substitute the squats for these..I also do kettlebell swings instead of deadlifts now, for high reps. Quite exhausting, and targets the lower back without overstraining the nervous system to the point where recovery suffers!Dips, pull-ups and rows are always good, and are improved by doing them on the rings as well. As we age, it is great to avoid spinal compression by loading the body excessively by means of barbells.Walk backwards, resisting with a heavy band anchored against your movement, and then walk forward. I do this as my warmup before my strength sessions, for about 10 minutes- this will forestall knee problems very effectively. Credit to the Knees over toes guy Ben Patrick for this! Truly wonderful inspiration from him.I used to work out for hours at a time. I was young, and I was kind of stupid, well, uninformed at least. Now I know better:Workouts can be short, but yet intense. Results do NOT suffer; in fact they can be BETTER! But, be sure to prioritize stretching. Each morning I stretch, and do Virtual Resistance, first thing. In front of the television= a win-win. Wake up your body productively, and stretch it out for the day to come, and you are setting yourself up for a wonderful day. Then, follow through with your diet: Eat protein, and make that your priority. If you want some carbs, go with sour dough bread, but minimally. Have a paleo smoothie (PLEASE) like I do daily- but now I consume a small one, of veggies, kefir, some berries and citrus, and sour cherrie juice that is spiked with iodine, vitamin D, and cod liver oil. This is your “insurance” nutritionally speaking, and should be adhered to religiously! These are the basics. After these are fulfilled, just live a good, balanced life, as our founding fathers decreed. Religion, conservative politics, and observing the golden rule along with your neighbors….Life can be quite simple, and wonderful. Just adhere to the basics of Western Civilization!! All else is dross.Support the Show.
Most Americans nowadays are severely overmedicated, malnourished, and sick! This sounds like an extreme statement, but is nevertheless true. Most adults are on a number of drugs, from anti-depressants, statins, high blood pressure drugs; drugs to help you sleep, and drugs to wake you up. The average number of drugs the average American is on at any one time, are 7. At a cost of $1200 dollars per year, per person. Of course, this is excluding the cost of going to see the medical doctor, and whatever procedure he decides you should have… Oftentimes, procedures and tests are given that result in huge bills for the patient, and those expensive tests are totally unnecessary. Also, you can be prescribed drugs for which the doctor receives a ‘kickback' of commission for prescribing them. All of this is ethically highly dubious, but it goes on regardless. Is it any wonder that medical bills are the number one reason for bankruptcy? Perhaps this is why anti-depressants are one of the biggest drugs to be prescribed! How many drugs should a person be on? NONE! But this does not seem to be the goal of the doctor at all anymore. They just keep on prescribing, and never get around to weaning you OFF the drugs, which ALL have side effects, which you get another drug prescribed to to treat THOSE effects. This is a pernicious system, that feeds endlessly on itself, making us sicker, and more dysfunctional as time goes on.Drugs are just treating our messed up lifestyles! A calorie restricted, low fat diet of processed and fast foods. A lack of good exercise, sunshine, and good sleep. Fulfilling relationships and conversation with the TV OFF are the best “prescriptions” you could ever have in your life. Getting out in nature with your bare feet in the grass and strolling down a woodland path will do more for your health than any stupid cholesterol drug can ever do! Be a stoic! 1Moderation in All Things: Adopt a balanced lifestyle, incorporating healthy eating, moderate exercise, and ample rest.Mindful Awareness: Practice mindfulness and self-awareness to understand and control impulses related to diet and exercise.Acceptance of the Uncontrollable: Recognize that certain health factors are beyond our control. Embrace acceptance and focus on how you respond to these circumstances.Mind-Body Symbiosis: Understand the profound link between mental and physical health. Nourish both aspects through positive thoughts and self-care practices.Rely on yourself, in other words. Be your OWN doctor! Drugs are usually NOT the answer. The only real breakthrough of Western medicine was the discovery of penicillin and the whole class of antibiotics. Alexander Fleming discovered that this type of fungus had an antibacterial property. This led to discovery of the drugs that could treat deadly diseases such as pneumonia and tuberculosis and many others that wiped out these heretofore untreatable diseases! This gave western medicine and your medical doctor a halo effect; such that now doctors are regarded as near god-like in their wisdom. No, they just gained access to a form of drug that is amazingly effective! And what was the treatment of choice for Tuberculosis in the old days? Doctors could only advise their patients to rest, eat well, and exercise outdoors. This is still the very best advice you can give to people today. It's the very best we can do, overall!Support the show

I know, you've heard it from standard medical advice your whole life:‘You don't need supplements! Everything your body and mind needs is in the food you eat!'Well, this might have been true, even a couple of hundred years ago, to some extent. But nowadays, when the majority of the ‘fake, engineered foods' most people ingest; things like seed oils instead of real animal fat, and soda pop and fruit juices instead of actual water, and fast food fake meat and white buns instead of real pastured meat- well, most of us don't really eat real food anymore!A good first step for most of us at this point is to make a real commitment to health and wellness- commit to eating a carnivore diet! This means that you forget all the junk you've been eating, and just eat meat, salt, seafood, and eggs for awhile. Nothing else!I know, I've preached a good paleo type of diet for a long time now: meat, eggs, seafood, along with full fat dairy, fermented yogurt and kefir, and even a bit of sour dough bread from time to time, along with veggies and fruits, mainly berries and citrus… And I still stand by that, long term. But this is a ‘reboot' if you are a SAD standard American Diet person. You need to ‘reawaken' your whole body and mind to reality. So, you go carnivore for two weeks, say. Suddenly, your body will reawaken to what it really needs; not pizza, and tacos with Mc Donald's crappy hamburgers and seed oil-drenched fries. Just meat, and salt! And eggs and seafood, that's all pilgrim. Two weeks, that's all, and you'll be a new man/woman. (Not trans!! That doesn't really exist anyway…)I guarantee you will feel great- but you will also be happy that now you can embrace a true diet for the rest of your life- the Paleo Diet! The diet of your ancestors, ALL of them. Not vegan (NO ONE ever followed that diet in the past), not vegetarian (ditto), and definitely NOT the SAD modern American fast food crap and fake food diet of misery!NOW you can include not only meat, eggs and seafood, but you can include full fat dairy like butter, yogurt and kefir, vegetables in your smoothies along with raw eggs, apple cider vinegar and cod liver oil and fruits. Occasional sour dough bread and nut butter- you are now living large!Just keep out all the modern crap. And supplement (I use liquid vitamin D and liquid iodine (lugal's solution) in my smoothie), but you can go with tablets if you'd like. For, in our modern depleted soils, especially here in the goiter belt of the upper midwest, iodine and vitamin D are musts!!Iodine is an utter must, and in addition to fluoride being dumped into our municipal water supplies, that poison makes iodine even more unavailable to us. Iodine is an utterly necessary supplement! As is Vitamin D- get your vitamin D checked; I guarantee you are deficient. You need to supplement; you need to go outside without sunscreen when you can, and you need to not wear chemical sunscreen! You also need to eat lots more butter, and animal fats, fatty fish like sardines and salmon, and things like cod liver oil to replenish your dietary vitamin D, since that vitamin/hormone is stored in FAT.And so, there you go, my prescription for you: go carnivore, and wake up! Then, commit to paleo for all time, and supplement to regain your natural, God-given health. And, as you enjoy your newfound health and vitality, avoid any government mandates, such as covering your face with cloth, getting horrid injections over and over, and hiding out and avoiding people. Ignore the government edicts, and avoid the medical establishment whenever possible. Both are largely drug pushers, and deniers of healthy nutrition and gooSupport the show
New Year New YouNow I don't mean that each year you should try to become a brand new person! Not at all. What I expect of each of us is to gradually learn about ourselves and our environment, and by self-observation and gradual study, to improve ourselves steadily, both physically and mentally.I'm not kidding; I know this sounds pretty crazy in a way, but I really do mean it. While we do age and deteriorate in some ways, we should also learn going forward, and progress in any way we can. I mean, it's not like we forever get stronger and faster- no, we do not! We should just change our focus…I used to do heavy single lifts to my max- now, I don't. In my 70's, I don't want huge mass, either on my body in the form of muscle, or on the barbell itself. I can achieve what I want nowadays better with repetitions, and usually better on gymnastic rings than with the bar. I've also discovered that shorter, although quite intense workouts, work better than long, marathon types of training. I've found that shorter, and less frequent workouts are actually more effective, and less draining as well as less prone to injury! Now, my twice or three times per week heavy basement workouts are 30-40 minutes MAX. My meal planning has also become far simpler. My daily paleo smoothie has nutrients galore, including kefir, vitamin D and iodine liquid, along with ginger and turmeric, coconut milk and cruciferous veggies and lower sugar fruits like berries and citrus. But now, I no longer feel the need to slam down 8 oz or so at a time- 1/2 that is plenty, along with real food like meats and eggs, yogurt and a few well-chosen vitamin supplements like B1 and C. Mostly, I consume good meat, cheese and dairy. Also, I do like to hike! In the winter, I hike in boots through the snow, and assist myself with ski poles through my woods. Again, this is so intense that not a lot of time needs to be spent- 15-20 minutes is plenty! I see people walking for an hour and more, and while that's fine for entertainment, that's how it should be regarded. Playing games like racket sports, touch football, softball, basketball, and ballroom dancing, for instance, might be fun for you, and that's fine. But, it's NOT exercise! It's similar to watching spectator sports- football, basketball etc. It's fun for many folks (not me), and more power to them! But, it doesn't improve your body, not even a little bit, sorry.Visiting your local library, and choosing really good books to read will definitely improve your mind. This includes fiction books as well as non-fiction: fiction books can transport you into other worlds and times, and from different perspectives. This is probably the most educational and transformative type of activity you can pursue! Also, watching good YouTube videos can improve many skills that you would find difficult to learn elsewhere, and for free! And hobbies should be pursued avidly- nothing is so satisfying and rewarding as improving your musical skills, or archery or shooting sports. Things like gardening and landscaping, along with animal husbandry and artistic pursuits of all kinds develop both you, and your property as well. Also, don't forget your spiritual side! A good church with a like-minded congregation and pastor can enrich your like like nothing else. It's sad and mistaken that this is so often ignored and overlooked: EVERY culture throughout history had a strong religious side. Every One. Just as they were also all meat eating! It is a part of being a healthy human. When religion is lost in a culture, or a civilization, that group will Support the show
Your daily workouts are crucial for your body, and mind! Not only in the gym, or your living room, but outside and in the woods, roads, and park. They don't need to be written down or chronicled, or obsessed over. Not at all! But they do need to be something that you fit into your daily life, as an important part, forever. When I was young, 20 or so, I started seriously working out with strength training. As a skinny distance runner in high school running cross country, which was only 2 and 1/2 miles, I was not at all pleased with my progress! I wanted to be like a superhero- strong, fit, and above all powerful. So I started lifting weights, as so many do, 3 times per week. Simple routines, of bench press, dips, military press, squats, bent over rows, chins, military press, and deadlifts.Let me tell you; if you are young and implement such a strategy, you will very soon no longer be skinny! It will really build you up, both inside and out. Next, you will get into nutrition, and healthy eating. If you learn all about healthy, high protein eating, within a year or so you will appear to be a different, improved person. This is a wonderful way for young people to begin their adult lives!Men or women, both will reap huge benefits from such a lifestyle. At first I included much running, but I learned to keep the distances at about 2-3 miles maximum. Anything else destroys your musculature, rather than enhancing it. Walking with ski poles as resistance in the woods, or heavy hand walking are vastly superior exercises, as is simply walking barefoot in the woods. So, for many years I lifted weights, quite heavily, sometimes too heavily, and learned that less can really be more- higher reps, less weight can be wonderful overall. Your body can be sculpted as powerful and aesthetic together. Now, in my 70's, I am just as committed as ever. But now, in the early mornings I stretch in the living room, and do ‘virtual resistance' exercises, along with isometrics and calisthenics in the AM. I do it in front of the television, and let me tell you it is the high point of my day! I pretty much only watch TV while exercising, and so that early morning 1 hour is entertaining, in that I awaken both my body and my mind together! I start the day both refreshed and happy, and my body is tuned and ready. I highly recommend this ‘coupling' of workouts with the reward of television. I used to do an afternoon workout later, around 3 or 4 PM, of pure strength training in my dungeon of a basement with weights, a power rack, and benches. I would do that workout as a split- usually lower body one day, and upper the next. At first I alternated day by day. As I aged, I realized that was too much, and would work my upper body one day, take a day off (but always keep the morning workout), and then do the lower body. Take another day off, and repeat. Worked wonderfully, as did replacing bench presses largely with gymnastic rings pushups, and squats with pistol squats on the rings, and ring rows. Added isometric/aerobic presses and chins and dips in the power rack, for time. (Timed static contractions, where you press constantly against the immovable rack bar for a minute or more).I also often go for a stroll in my woods, with heavy hand dumbbells or ski poles. Just for 15 minutes or so, which is refreshing! Being retired, I now have the gift of time, and I try to take full advantage of this luxury.I have largely stopped sprinting in my yard barefoot. I seems to be overly draining now. As do my daily workouts, sometimes…Now, I only want to maintain. I will increa
You don't have enough magnesium! Probably, because almost no one does. The levels have been dropping in food sources for decades, and the diseases and illnesses caused by this lack are growing by leaps and bounds: high blood pressure, inability to sleep and relax, migraines and headaches, arthritis, diabetes (studies show magnesium is necessary to properly convert carbs and sugars), and the list goes on.To even metabolize vitamin D you need adequate magnesium, and many mental phobias such as anxiety are linked to inadequate levels, and it also appears to be a shield of sorts against Parkinson's and Alzheimers.Magnesium even is crucial to enable bone mineral density in post-menopausal women, along with relief from constipation (by relieving the smooth muscle in the gut) and also of gut problems and indigestion.Magnesium oil seems to me to be the best vehicle to bolster your levels! If a food source has to be consumed and pass through your gut, only a fraction will be absorbed. I injured my shoulder, and started spraying magnesium oil onto my left arm to relieve the constant ache. It worked amazingly well!It absorbs quickly, and seems similar to the coconut oil that I usually put on my skin after a shower. It moisturizes, and then the magnesium absorbs directly through the skin into the body, bypassing the digestive system entirely. So, a few sprays on your skin, and your magnesium levels are upped immediately- it relieves my shoulder and arm pain in a matter of minutes!Of course, the added total body benefits are also spread throughout your entire body, without interference. To start using this natural supplement in this form seems to me to be a no-brainer!I am not a big supplement proponent, being instead one that recommends you get all you need from real food instead. But for me, magnesium oil and liquid vitamin D3 are exceptions in this modern world we live in. Oh, and I also supplement with a small amount of liquid iodine in my smoothies, which also contain the liquid D3. Sunlight (and its accompanying vitamin D), and iodine (which is also very depleted in modern diets) are crucial, and easily supplemented. But Magnesium is best absorbed through the ‘many mouths' of the skin, and so are completely put to work in the entire body, without either being partially destroyed in the gut, or in causing indigestion as well. The best part of protecting your health with magnesium oil, liquid vitamin D, and Iodine? Very cheap, very simple, and with incredible benefits with no side effects! Find a Doctor's prescription like that. This is a short podcast, but I think the bottom line is priceless. I had to get it out to you! Whenever I find something that is incredibly beneficial, with no downsides; that can literally help millions of people- I can't help shouting it from the rooftops, or from your iPhone!Get yourself some Magnesium oil, and spray yourself to health. Anywhere on your skin is OK, but by the lymph glands (under your arms) is the fastest. And strangely, on your feet is recommended by many…Experiment! There is NO wrong way, and the upside is HUGE!
Perhaps you've heard that our ancient Cro-Magnon ancestors in Europe of perhaps 35,000 years ago and more tend to have near-perfect dentition, despite not having toothbrushes, floss, or dentists…Why do you suppose this is? And it's not because they lived such short lives that they didn't have time to develop cavities and the like. Some did die young; indeed, such active lives in the outdoors, hunting with primitive tools and fighting large animals took their toll. But, as always when comparing mortality in ancient times, we often forget that mortality figures are skewed by infant mortality in those times before hospitals and birthing assistance. Many infants (and young mothers) dying in childbirth just make overall death rates far more likely, and much younger.Indeed, many Cro-magnon men and women, once they reached adulthood, went on to live quite long lives. After all- they all exercised intensively, perforce, and ate a wonderful, Paleolithic diet of mostly meat, with some fruits and vegetables, when available. No sedentary couch potatoes were possible in those times! Most skulls of these early humans display wonderful tooth health, lifelong, unless a tooth was literally knocked out by a bad fall, or in a brutal fight. Today, strangely, virtually all of us, with very few exceptions, have many major tooth and gums interventions over our lives, at great pain and expense. Why?Back to the Future:Certain things we are encouraged to do today should be gotten rid of! Others should be supplemented by other practices, ones that are more rooted in the biology of our Paleolithic ancestors. For instance, I believe that dentist ‘interventions' should be kept at the minimum. Sterilizing your oral cavity by, say going inside your mouth and completely carpet bombing the microbiome of your mouth and teeth, will destroy the bad bacteria, but also killing all of the good bacteria. Here is what recent research, and myself recommend:Do NOT floss! Almost all dentists will deny it, but flossing pushes the bacteria from between the teeth deep into the gums. Not good!Use a water pick appliance instead. Water gently flushes the teeth and gums, and does so comparatively gently. Don't brush 3X per day, and don't use a fluoridated toothpaste. Once at night before bed is plenty. An electric toothbrush is the best, followed by the Water Pick. Use a natural toothpaste like Earth Paste. If you can, avoid fluoridated water- fluoride is actually a toxic chemical, that causes weaker, more brittle teeth that also become mottled and brownish-yellow.Do buy Xylitol sweetened gums and candies!Xylitol, which is a natural sweetener made from plants, is indigestible to the bad bacteria in your mouth. BUT, they don't know it, and eat that xylitol to their fill- and then starve! Then, the good bacteria can multiply therein…The last, and most transformative to your dental health, is to start oil pulling daily! If you're not familiar with this ancient Ayurvedic practice, here is how to do it:Keep a little dish or bowl of coconut oil in your bathroom. Sprinkle it liberally with Xylitol. (It's inexpensive, and can be used in baked goods as well in lieu of sugar). Each day, as you prepare to shower, cut a small piece of the hardened oil (in winter), and spoon out a bit into your mouth in summer. Start in to “swishing' it about in your mouth as you shower, pushing it all around, through your teeth, whatever, as you go.At the end of your bathroom routine (mine is each morning after my workout), spit the oil out into the toilet,
Let's say you are young, 18-22 or so, and just starting out in life. You are hopefully well educated, and undoubtedly have some ideas of what you want to do, and how to support yourself, hopefully along with a family before too long. Along with basic questions of career, and just how to get started, you really should consider as vitally important just where you should live! City and metropolitan area, suburbs of a large city, or small town and country?Well, since the largest cities, like Chicago, Los Angeles, New York, Philadelphia and Detroit are now all crumbling, crime-infested snake pits- well, I would avoid them at all costs. Especially if considering a family! The school systems in such places are horrible beyond words, as are all public works they control; things like water supplies are largely contaminated, crime is both unpunished and out-of-control, and the very air you breathe there is filthy. Suburbs around cities tend to be much nicer, but the cost of housing in such places is prohibitive. It depends on the job you can get, but any normal income is almost impossible in such places to be enough, even with husband and wife both working, which is not ideal at all.In my opinion, I would do exactly in your position as I did, many years ago. Get educated, either in college of in a vocational tech school, and then save all you can for a few years. Don't live at home and be a freeloader; this is actually immoral, and a coward's way out. Live cheaply, and work hard. Find a potential spouse who will do the same! This will serve to separate the ‘wheat from the chaff', and the two of you will build your characters and work ethic along with your bank account!During this period in your life, work also on your health! After work hours (or before), make sure to work out daily, building your body and your ‘terrain', by eating as healthily as you can, and fortifying your body and mind with animal protein and some vegetables. Also, teach yourself to cook such healthy foods, which will be both more economical and good for you than eating out. Avoid fast foods, and processed foods completely! And do not fail to also build your spiritual life! Find a good church (smaller is better), and attend regularly. Pray, and attend to the development of your soul! This may be the most important direction of all, so be attentive to what your deepest self truly desires. All throughout this period of life, research and think about where you would like to live. Do you love where you already are, and is it a small town or city with rural surroundings? That is just fine, so start to look for a homestead for your family, a place where you can live peacefully forever. If you don't live in such a place, then look for what would be your ideal. This could vary, but would be quite rural if you value western civilization a community of shared values. Multicultural places tend to be fractious, unsafe, and eventually anti-civilization!Exotic locales might sound good, but actually are only good for vacations! People of European descent, such as myself and probably you, are evolved in a cold, harsh climate. We need struggle and hardship, things to solve and conquer. Without real accomplishments, Western man is unfulfilled, and never really happy! Hence our endless upward climb…Only when other racial groups come to join us, do we begin to unravel. Stay in a homogenous area, above all!And so, you've found a rural area with natural beauty, clean air and water, and folk that are very like yourself. You also need to be able to find a good job there, one in which you are abl
Hopefully you've heard by now of the Carnivore Diet!It is very easy to understand; this is part of its charm. You can't go wrong- you only eat meat. For some, like Jordan Peterson and his daugter, you only eat beef, and salt. (If they don't, they suffer debilitating autoimmune conditions, and massive depression). And so, they follow this diet of necessity. It is kind of, in my mind, an extreme paleo diet. Kind of an ice age diet, as if you were living during the last ice age, and only animals were available to eat and so survive. NO plants, or mushrooms… NOTHING.And so, why should you, a fully modern human, with grocery stores and endless foodstuffs available, follow such a restrictive diet??Well, if you have just about any health condition,, like diabetes, or psoriasis, or obesity- you are SURE to improve! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0tAZ238_g4Q Link to Dr. David Unwin on low carb versus diabetesAnd, just to point out- a Carnivore Diet is a NO CARB diet, by definition!! Not just low, but NO.And so, my little paleo friends: Go Carnivore! (Or at least ‘Carnivor-ish), like me! I also include cheese, kefir, cream, butter and full fat yogurt, along with copious amounts of eggs and some cruciferous veggies and low carb fruits. But that is the end result. For now, paleo pilgrim: if you are fat, sick and diabetic to any extent? Go Full Carnivore! It's not even difficult, not really. You will never, ever be hungry, and you will feel satisfied and energized, eating only beef. The only thing hard to deal with is social pressure, but what is that when set against you very health and survival, long term??I guarantee that all your conditions and the state of your health will improve. Vastly in pretty much every case!Stick with it, until you are feeling and looking amazing! (I'm not kidding, results are that immediate, and inavoidable). Now, you can, one at a time, add in things: try chicken and fish. Still fine? Try eggs, then dairy. Still doing great? Try a bit of fruit or vegetable…All of that is just optional. The true freedom is just knowing that, in the final analysis: You really don't need anything by animal products! You might ENJOY other foods…but you don't NEED THEM to have a ‘so called' BALANCED diet. Not at all. It's just gilding the lily, really. So, go carnivore young man! (Or woman). Stick with it as long as you'd like, and as long as you enjoy ever-improving health and wellness! It is a RESET!!Just like restarting your computer brings it back to its virginal state, so too does ‘resetting' your primordial self back to the pre-carb, pristine human state! Then, with your new health and knowledge, you can venture back out into the dangerous modern world, full of its perilous food-like substances, and hyper-processed garbage- but now, you know that true health lies in animal protein foods; not in medications and plant concoctions of oxalates and nightshades galore!
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1a6nfG69c9gI read and hear all the time about how we all should do certain things when we reach a certain age. If not, we are being irresponsible…It starts really young: get your baby vaccinations- a LOT of vaccinations, all at once! (NOT a good idea. much better to space them out over years, and even better to pick and choose amongst the many pushed.). For instance: flu vaccine and coronavirus for babies?? Terrible idea!As for the dozen or so usually pushed for infants, I would explore which ones are really necessary! (Recommendations change, but the number of vaccinesalways goes- UP!). If you or yours has a new baby, research this. All vaccines are definitely NOT your baby's friend. Now, I am not at the infant care level anymore, although I am soon to become a grandfather yet again. (Hurray!) My daughter knows all about appropriate, and non-appropriate vaccines… But let me say here- if you give your infant the flu vaccine and the coronavirus vaccine , among others at that early age- you are doing the wrong thing! Don't.I am 71 now, and mainly concerned with my own health and fitness. Aside from my overall very healthy, paleo and largely meat and dairy based diet, ample sleep, and daily workout schedule, am sure to NOT take any prescription drugs. I also have a daily smoothie, prepared in my Vitamix, of kefir, tart black cherry juice, citrus, including an organic unpeeled lemon, cruciferous veggies, apple cider vinegar, nutritional yeast of B vitamins, cod liver oil, ginger, turmeric, and current garden veggies I am harvesting in season. My goals have not changed since in my early twenties. I strive to get stronger (not just maintain), and in some ways I still am! Having muscular endurance is crucial as well, but it is the truth that you don't get continually stronger over the decades, no matter what you do!But is you look into Ben Patrick's kneesovertoesguy.comOn YouTube. Endless helpful videos and demonstrations of how top cure your knees, along with feet, back, and most of the rest of your physical body! Trust me: you can restore injured and even badly deteriorated joints with determined exercise and stretching, always doing such well within your limits and gradually progressing! Here is how my own journey plays into all of this. I took a bad fall onto concrete pavers a few weeks ago. I broke my fall with my left hand, and my left shoulder was injured pretty badly, along with the tendon on my left knee. Ouch! So, I have been doing daily therapy over my whole body, using virtual resistance by flexing the muscles and tendons just to the point where it does not hurt badly. A little pain, but more therapeutic than anything. The worst thing I could have done? Go to the clinic, take pain pills, and do nothing, except schedule surgeries and more prescriptions. I didn't do that, and now I am definitely on the mend. The pain is manageable, after I do my morning exercises. About an hour's worth, just as I always do, but now gentler, and more focussed on the problem areas…So, the point is this- just keep on striving, to get stronger and more flexible and vital. The rules never change- they just sometimes need alterations given circumstances. Just never give up, and do it all yourself, researching and getting advice where you can. Like from Ben Patrick, who athletes love and medical doctors hate!
I just fell down, hard!I went out to the garage, in the rain, and slipped on the mud around our new sidewalk landscaping project. It's been dry here for so long that I think I forgot how to walk on mud, and my legs shot up in the air and I crashed down on my back. I was fine, and so just got what I came out for, and went back in the house. But it got me thinking: I'm 71 years old now. Such a fall might have laid up many folks, and severely shaken many others, so that their back, knees, or other body parts would need medical attention. And that is my point- I am perfectly fine, although a bit dirty. In fact, upon reflection, I realize that physically, I can do anything I could do when I was 35, or 25. In fact, I am actually quite a bit stronger and more flexible than I was at those younger ages, and a m quite resilient overall. Mentally and physically, I can do anything I want to, and never even consider my age in choosing activities to participate in. I say this not to brag, but to point out that any of us- all of us- should be in this condition for our entire lives! Not that I expect my mother, who is 97, to still be so capable as when she was younger; or her brother, Uncle Bob, at age 101 definitely can't do everything he'd like…. But, both of them (and my Aunt Janie, at 99) can all still get around and are largely independent in their homes.I plan to follow in their footsteps, even if I do occasionally fall down, and I suggest that you do likewise. What is it that they do daily, and that I also do, that keeps us all going along with such resilience, both mentally and physically? 1. Eat a diet of real foods: avoid fast foods and processed foods, relying instead on meats, cheeses, small amounts of vegetables and fruits, and nuts. Wild game and seafood, rather than grains, jellies, and cakes. Cook your food yourself, whether on the stove or the grill. Use a good sea salt for flavor, like Redmond's Real Salt from the dead seas of Utah. ( I have no affiliation with that company).2. Work out every day. Stretch, flex virtually, do calisthenics, get on the floor and stretch some more. Massage your feet, and exercise them, along with self-resisted neck exercises as well. Do it first thing daily. Do it in front of the TV- Every Day! Also, do serious strength training 2 to 3X per week, in the afternoons. Gymnastic rings are a wonderful mainstay for this, as is a Power Rack!3. Eat a large breakfast. It doesn't need to be right when you get up, after your stretching workout is better. 3 or 4 eggs is ideal! Coffee with cream is a wonderful addition; you can even have some as you work out in front of the television set.4. Do your own manual labor. Don't hire it out, just because you can- provide for yourself as much as you can! Keep your own house, tend your own garden, yard, and woods. Make your home as meticulously as you make yourself, body and mind and soul.5. Read daily. Walk and meditate every day, walk in the woods and in nature. Walk backwards. Live as rurally as you can, and relish it. This is the birthright of the European race, and we abandon it at our peril.6. Go to church, and attend to your immortal soul as you do to your mortal self. They both add up to YOU! Don't emulate someone as shallow as Arnold Schwarzenegger, who says an afterlife is a fantasy. He should know better- and so should you…And there you have it. How to fall down and not get hurt! With some digressions…
Hello, and welcome to the Smoothie Cafe! We are here traditionally discussing health and fitness from a Paleo Diet point of view. A smoothie, made preferably in a Vitamix, is key to maximizing your nutritional density intake, and that is still my belief. But as in anything looked at honestly for a while, say 10 years or more as it is here, new facts come in, and opinions alter…As it is in life! When you are young, say in your teens and twenties, you are rightly concerned with getting started in life. You want to be strong and healthy, but much of it is to attract and establish a life with a like-minded mate. This is right and natural.Much of your youth is fixated on finding the proper path (job), and the right place to live, and raise a family. Traditionally, this was just on finding a place to live near your job, that was safe and with good schools, etc. But, with the advance of Democratic socialism/liberalism, this has been perverted. Now, you need to find a place that is not contaminated by ‘wokeism' and liberalism, which can transform a city or area into a place where:1. Crime is not punished, and criminals run free. (This includes nowadays all blue, democrat-run liberal cities, which are virtually ALL big cities!)2. Schools are teaching nonsense and anti-civilization like ‘Whites are evil', ‘White Privilege', and other aspects of Critical Race Theory, which is total poison and a total lie.3. ‘Trans' and other Woke garbage. LGBTQ and all the rest of anti-civilization garbage. It's hard to believe to me, who grew up in the 1950's, that we are even talking about such disgusting craziness, and that young people have to deal with and process this crap. But it is there today, sadly!I am now officially old- 71. I have grandchildren! While I still am very concerned with health and wellness, and am very much still a ‘physical culturist' (NOT a bodybuilder), I realize at this stage that the health of our country, state, and nation is just as important to the future. And, even though myself, wife and family are all fit and healthy, side-stepping most ‘big medicine' misdirections, such as in covid vaccines and statin prescriptions, much of our population and so-called leaders are still very misinformed and are ‘loose cannons' of bad information and direction! Here are my conclusions: If you are older, like me- work out daily! Do stretching and ‘virtual resistance' training, in front of the TV, every morning first thing. 30 minutes to an hour; you will enjoy it! Also, work out with resistance training like pushups, especially on gymnastic rings, and work your whole body. Do rows and pullups, situps and squats and deadlifts. At least two times per week, forever. Don't ever stop. And this, for every age: Work out- same prescription! From 12- 112. Walk in your daily life, best is barefoot in the woods, on the grass. Sleep at least 8 hours per night, in total darkness- banish TV's and other screens from your bedroom. Blackout curtains and white noise can help, if you haven't taken my other advice, and gotten the HELL out of big cities and suburbs with blue light and noise coming from everywhere! If you are younger, with a young family or planning on one- Get out of big cities! Get our of big suburbs, in metropolitan areas (They are all liberal/blue/socialist/communistic). Get Out Now! It may not be possible in future!Make sure you are in a red state, or at least purple one. And go rural; small towns are better than larger, small cities are much better than large, and so it goes. The furth
I am at an odd place right now. It's now even that crazy, but it does confuse me- I have gotten a new computer! I know, that actually sounds good, not bad… but trust me: I was so used to my old computer that, even though it was slow, and sometimes frustrating- at least I always knew where things were, and how things worked in general. Nowadays, however, although my computer is really, really fast- my prep work on things is really slow. I can't find where my podcasts are, my apps are all updated and different, and so it goes, on and on. And I think that life, in general, is often like this. We work really hard on something, say to change our diet. We switch from the SAD American diet to paleo, and then we replace most carbs with protein from meat and dairy. We become much, much healthier, and hey- what could be wrong with that?Well, our friends might treat us differently. They might denigrate us, saying that our diet is not healthy at all, since it is high in fat, and we don't do enough ‘cardio'. We become confused, since old friends treat us differently, and although everything we've done has been really positive for our health, things are just, somehow- different from what we are used to!Just like my new computer: when things are better, even way better- they still are different. Different is inherently uncomfortable! It just is…This is when we need to realize that different may be uncomfortable at first; but if it is better, then we need to just roll with the punches and embrace it. Forge ahead with a big smile! If you can't find your old files, don't worry about it for now. (You can always find them later, they're still there). What is important is to make new files- or go ahead and make more progress on your carnivor-ish kind of a diet, and savor the positive changes to your health! Do your daily workout, and push hard when you know it's right, and taper off if you know you are under too much stress from other things in your life. Each day is actually new, and completely different, if we only realize it.Here is another example: it's Spring here in Wisconsin, and normally that is cause for undiminished rejoicing, after a particularly long and trying Winter. BUT- we had a few days in the high 80's (not normal, not at all), and then had a snowfall of over 1 and 1/2 FEET! The tree branches in our woods and yard broke under the weight, by the hundreds! They are lying, even now, in the yard, which is now wet and semi-flooded. The tractor can't help much, since it would make ruts anywhere it travels, and so instead of avidly planning our garden, and cultivating our plants and yard- we are trapped in a strange different sort of Spring. It's really hard mentally..But actually, it's no big deal, not really. It's time to reflect, to lay back and wait. Even though I'm dying to get going on all things Spring- I need to change my focus. I can read, and write more. Focus on my gymnastic rings training, trying new angles and exercise ideas. Grill more in bulk, to stock up on meats in the fridge, and smoothies in canning jars ready to drink. And slowly build my trap-bar deadlifts to a new peak! The garden can wait. Tomorrow, even though it will be a high of 40, I can use my newly sharpened chain saw and cut down some broken branches that are hanging over the roadway. I can drag these branches, and others, down the road, even though I can't drag them into the yard itself. I'll just push them off the road, and wait for when I can drag them to where I can either cut them for firewood, of burn them. Nothing is really changed,
It's really not that hard to accomplish. The information is all there, unfortunately, much of it is obscured by people ‘selling things', such as offering an easy way. That is indeed the problem: no matter how hard you look, online, on TV or on YouTube commercials- there really is no easy way. But there is a simple and effective way! Eat an ancestral, or paleo type of diet. High animal protein, meat, and dairy. Some vegetables, with cruciferous veggies like broccoli and cauliflower, and small amounts of lettuce with olive oil and avocado and coconut oil types of dressing. Seafood and eggs are wonderful as well; but the bedrock of your diet should be pastured meats and dairy, in particular ruminant meat, such as beef. Like our ancestors ate long ago, and evolved alongside throughout the long ice age- mammoths, aurochs, and cows. Same types exactly, that turned vegetation, however sparse, into protein-dense meat! And now we get to lifestyle, and the huge bugaboo of exercise. For be assured that diet is considered the most contentious component of a healthy and fit lifestyle, it is really very simple. Just do as outlined above. Veganism and vegetarianism are bad jokes- just avoid them, as did our ancestors. (Those who survived that is).And now: exercise. Exercise, real, productive exercise is one thing: Strength Training! I'm not saying you can't run, breaking a sweat as you jog along a forest path, preferably barefoot… of course you can! Or walk or hike long distances, in the sunshine, or swim or paddle board or play tennis or paddle/pickleball with your friends- all of these are great! Great adjuncts, like playing Wordle, or doing crossword puzzles, or any number of sports like hockey, or baseball, basketball or football or soccer. All are fine and wonderful games, along with many others.But- they are not EXERCISE. Exercise is a practice that you need to do for your entire life. It means to do certain necessary things:Strengthen your musculature, from head to toe. Progressively and on a near-daily basis, for your entire life. Slowly, and deliberately, on your own. Without competition. This practice, done regularly, will also strengthen your tendons and ligaments, while also stretching and maintaining your ranges of motion. You just need to figure out the protocol, and then to Do It!First, start with Virtual Resistance. This is flexing as you move your body throughout various positions. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DI65LRENdKo&t=27sThis will give you the idea. Go thou and do likewise! Then, add in straight-legged situps for high reps, and stretch out on a mat in front of the TV. (Do this every morning). Add in pushups, on a perfect pushup device if you can, with your feet elevated on a couch or chair. Do them s-l-o-w-l-y for maximum benefit…Add in Asian squats, where to squat to the floor, with your feet flat on the ground, and hold… this is a very important exercise!A ‘rebounder' is an important adjunct here: bounce on it as you do your virtual resistance exercises, and finish by bouncing on your butt, which is an amazing ab exercise!Let's say you do this listed above for about 1/2 hour in the morning, in front of the television. It's a great way to start the day! Reward yourself with 3 or 4 scrambled eggs- your body will thank you. You will no
ABOUT EVERYTHING!I know, that sounds a tad extreme… but it is true, nevertheless. I started out today thinking about this while listening to a podcast by Shawn Baker, a carnivore doctor who has a podcast, and youtube videos about the subject. He was interviewing a former vegan, as he often does. This was a man who almost died of his long-term veganism, and saved himself and his wife by becoming carnivorous. The numbers of such misguided people seem legion, and they stick to this vegan notion of health well past the point where you would think that anyone would wake up! They become walking stick insects, with (ironically) bloated bellies, incredibly weak, and with brains that are confused and very unhappy overall. The almost universal result with such vegans is that, once they try eating meat, sometimes after many years of not doing so, it is as if ‘The lights come on', and they finally feel alive! Why does this realization take so long for these folks?I think it is the same shuttered state of mind that affects the liberal elites in many other areas- they are so stubbornly sure that they know everything, and the many ignoramuses all about them- the middle-class non-elites, so inferior that they don't know everything the leftist elites tell them are true! These non-elite, conservative people, who prize meat above all in their diets, and in those of their children, recommend strength training as opposed to leftist cardio adherence, notice that there definitely are differences between the different races of men, (just as there are in breeds of dogs, for instance), and worst of all noticed that Trump did a really, really good job overall are just stupid! The genius leftist liberal vegans also know that the Covid lockdown was great, despite having no better results than countries such as Sweden that had no lockdown, and despite that children are retarded in their schooling by those lockdown measures and are irretrievably damaged in their learning, these Big Government top-down supporters refuse to change their minds! They must be right! After all, Faucii is a genius just as they are, and would be incapable of spewing misinformation for years on end. Except that he did! These vegan leftists also are so glad they took the vaccines, and then the multiple boosters, along with the flu shot (that doesn't work either), and they will never ever never admit that they are wrong about anything EVER! No matter how often they are proven, over and over, to be wrong about every single thing they believe, in their little democrat, liberal, Big Medicine, Big Pharma cult. Here is the truth, vegan liberal leftist democrats: The vaccine you mandated not only didn't prevent contracting covid (which turns out to be far milder than you warned us), it seemed to make people more prone to contracting the disease over and over, because the untested MRNA vaccines seem to damage the body's own immune system, rendering it more vulnerable. To ALL diseases! In addition, it appears that the fake vaccine that doesn't work also makes those who took it far more vulnerable to cardiac forms of death, even at very young ages.I guess my ultimate point of all this is that the LEFT has brought us down a very damaging, and negative path, where our health is declining swiftly. Crime and homelessness have taken over our cities, and criminals are not punished, and police are vilified. Jobs are now given out as a form of ‘equity', without regard to merit, as are university places and scholarships. White heterosexual males, the type that built our very civilization and virtually all of the achievements of the modern world of western civilization are now vi
Was it really for almost 3 long years that we had to wear useless masks, had our churches and schools largely closed, and we were forced to inject into our bodies toxic MRNA fake vaccines that didn't even work to protect us? And that now are proving to have done irreparable harm to our bodies, making us prone to myocardial diseases of the heart, often fatal?Yes, that is exactly what we've lived through- the biggest scam and hoax in history. We are still not supposed to talk about it, as we continue to pretend that Dr. Slouchi is a veritable god, instead of a madman. But, I am here to tell you now, that it is OVER. Don't ever allow something like this, a toxic Democrat autocratic Big Lie to happen, ever again. It's time for all of this to turn around. For big medicine, big pharmaceuticals, big government, and big top-down control are all evil, and actually what the United States was founded to eliminate! We need to get back to basics: self-autonomy, where each of US decides what is best for our own health, and that of our families. If the government tells us to eat lots of carbs in the form of grains, we should self-educate, and tell them no. No, it's not healthy. Neither is eating bugs to stop ‘climate change'. Ruminant animals are the healthiest things we can eat, despite what we are constantly told. Green vegetables like spinach, kale, and beet greens are loaded with oxalates, plant self-defense chemicals that inflame our bodies, joints, gut lining, and other areas leading to kidney stones, inability to sleep, connective tissue disorders, and on and on…Our great-grandparents knew far more about health and proper living than any MD or government agency does today. They would tell us to get outside in the sunshine, sleep 8 hours per night, eat a good meat-based diet, and get good exercise on a daily basis, outside in nature. They would tell us to avoid doctors as much as possible, unless absolutely necessary for a traumatic event like a bullet or a broken bone. That is what doctors are good at, and that is ALL that they are good at.The one good thing that came out of the past three years is that we now know that Big Government is the enemy. Their goal has been revealed for all to see- to disarm us (like Hitler), to take all power unto themselves, the evil fake ‘leaders', to stop free speech entirely, and to totally control us as slaves to their horrible system, by taxing us into that state and redistributing wealth to the least deserving from the hardest working. What can we do? First, recognize the problem! Then, vote with your feet- move out of big ‘blue' metropolitan areas- you are easily controlled there. Move to red states, or at least rural areas where traditional American values still hold sway. Raise your families with those values, and attend a small conservative church. Home school if your own school system is hopelessly ‘woke' and worthless. Get involved to change the local political structure if it is Democratic and woke.Send your kids to Technical schools rather than colleges or universities that only seek to indoctrinate them. Those have lost all credibility nowadays! Employers have figured out that most degrees are now worthless…Realize that your health is up to you. Most medical procedures, drugs and surgeries, are far more harmful than good! Avoid them. You are responsible for your own health and wellness. No one else can do it for you- they just pretend that they can, for the huge payoff they get from your health insurance. Most people will disagree with me, but many are starting to wake up. Medic
It doesn't matter where you are now. Not at all. This is, as they say, the first day of the rest of your life! So let's get started. It all starts with diet and exercise. Everything in your future life of fitness and wellness. So, this January 1st of 2023 (or whenever you are reading this, I'm writing on January 1st) clean out your cupboards and refrigerator. Get rid of anything toxic. First and most importantly, get rid of any toxic seed or vegetable oils! Corn oil, soy, canola, peanut and the rest- they are the most damaging fake foods you can consume. They are fake fats, that your body uses to replace natural good fats that your cells and brain is made of. From now on, you only use beef tallow, lard, olive and coconut oil. Not only will you be immeasurably healthier, but your food will taste much better as well. Throw your old oils out. Don't even donate them to a food bank- all those oils are good for is machinery lubrication. That is ALL. Very toxic, trust me on this. And don't forget- this includes fake fats in solid forms, such as Crisco, margarine, and Cool Whip as well. True poisons all.Start to exercise if you don't already. Walking doesn't count, running either! We are talking strength training. Resistance training, whether using bodyweight, weights, bands, machines, or self-resistance; they all do the same thing: trigger your body to increase its strength, both in muscle, tendons, ligaments, and bones. Also, this forces improvements in the cardiovascular system and oxygen utilization. The very best, and by far the most convenient and sustainable method of this is not in a gym. It's at home, in your living room in front of the TV! Just get a good mat that you can unroll, and each morning place it in front of the television set. To start, you can just lie on the mat, and stretch. And sit, and stretch, and stand and stretch! Experiment with your stretching, perhaps using a book such as my own Perfectly Paleo Exercise. There are so many ways to combine stretching movements with strength ones, and they are so natural and feel so good. Lots of my podcasts and blog posts at www.paleojay.com describe how to do them. And remember, you will be kind of ‘at play', like a cat as it rebuilds its body by self-resisting on a daily basis. There are no ‘wrong moves', just do movements that feel right- like squatting down to the floor barefoot, and just holding it while you are watching your TV show. This is the Hindu, or Asian squat, and it is incredibly beneficial as a stretch for Westerners. Straight-legged situps, and of course pushups are wonderful adjuncts to your routine. Self massage of your feet is great, and also good for your hand strength, and is something I do daily. Planks are good; I usually ‘pulse' them up and down rather than just hold, and key for me it what I call ‘Virtual Resistance', which simply means flexing throughout a range of motion. I have a brief video explaining this, but it just means you flex throughout a muscle groups full range of motion (like doing a double biceps pose as a bodybuilder would, but slowly, flexing constantly throughout, for reps. Just imagine you are using resistance, and flex from within, isometrically as you move. You create your own resistance, and it is every bit as taxing as using real weights, or bands, or a machine. And it is VERY safe, while being just as effective. That's about as far as I want to go for now. Just get started-1st thing every morning, work out by the TV. Every morning!Eat like a caveman. Eggs, fermented dairy like yogurt and kefir, and che
OK- my last podcast was about walking backward, and so bulletproofing and building your lower body. Remember, this is achieved by:Walking backward, usually against the resistance of an elastic band ideally,And then doing various ‘Knees over toes guys' exercises, including deadlifts and stiff-legged deadlifts on a platform, aka Jefferson Curls. Doing pistol squats while balancing on gymnastic rings is great, and deep lunges with total control to strengthen the entire leg. Once again, the videos at ‘kneesovertoesguy.com can illustrate all of this superbly. But now, I have promised you all the bulletproof ways to build and maintain your upper body as well… so here we go!First- walk backward against the resistance of a heavy elastic band, slowly and deliberately, back and forth, to completely work every muscle within your lower body! Really, this is important enough to do each time you workout, which would include two days of the lower body, and two days of the upper body per week. Four days per week- Monday, Wednesday, Friday and Sunday for instance. Ideally take a day off between each day, for a rest day between each workout day. Here is your upper body day: I press a bar into a power rack at arms length, and then slowly lower myself from my legs, doing a military press, up and down, resisting with my arms as my legs lift me slowly up and down. But the resistance is all in my arms and shoulders. Continue for one minute- you will be wiped out!Alternate this with pull-ups on the gymnastic rings which you have suspended above you in the rafters of your basement or garage. If 8 or more pushups for multiple sets is too hard, leave your feet on the ground, and just lean way back, to the point you can do at least eight reps. Then, do pull-ups with your feet on the ground, resisting just enough to allow you to do a full minute of slow pull-ups , and then follow with feet on the ground pull-ups at an angle on the rings. Then go to your dip station, and instead of doing regular dips, which are quite hard long term on your shoulders- stand on a box within the dip bars, and lower yourself slowly up and down, using your feet to allow you to push as hard as you can as you slowly move up and down in the dip motion. Keep it up for at least a minute. This is called ‘aerobic isometrics', and it is really effective! Follow once again with feet on the ground pull-ups on the rings for an 8-10 count. Finally, lower your gymnastic rings to a low level, and start doing pushups. Walk forward holding the rings, until you can do a pretty easy pushup, almost standing nearly straight. Do 20 or more reps, and then do 20 or more flies in the same position. Next, hold your hands out straight before you, suspending your torso at a straight angle, and move your arms in a circular motion while suspending your body at that angle. Go to near exhaustion. Then, walk backward, and repeat, at a near horizontal angle, pushups and all. And finish even further back, where your body is held horizontally, or even with heels raised on a box, doing the same motions. This will exhaust your upper body, very safely and productively, without any injury-provoking movements like the bench press, barbell rows or such standard movements. These will all ultimately injure you, by forcing your body into unnatural planes of motion. The gymnastic rings, alternatively, will build the strength of both your tendons, ligaments, and muscles, which will serve to protect the very joints that barbell movements will compromise and grind on. It's all about the longevity of fitness and strength, not ‘proving yourself' for a few years, and then collapsing into a
I hope you are aware of the benefits of backward walking! I first heard about this from Ben Patrick, the ‘knees over toes guy', and he is really onto something big here.I am now 70 years of age, and I'll tell you, this is around the age when many of my contemporaries are getting knee (and hip) replacement surgeries. Trust me: this is something you would much prefer to avoid if possible; and I'm here to tell you that these knee surgeries are completely preventable! In fact, most joint replacement surgery is preventable, simply through properly targeted exercises. Despite what your MD might tell you!The top exercise you can do to preserve and enhance the strength and well-being of your entire leg and its accompanying joints is walking backward. Simply by doing this, you are building the strength and conditioning of the parts of your legs that support and protect the joints. When you walk or run forwards, you are building one set of muscles- those that propel you to the front. These allow you to jump, sprint, and leap. This is fine, it is why we also squat, and deadlift to build these muscles. But remember: there are muscles that work the opposite direction, and these muscles are usually ignored. And these muscles (and tendons) allow us to decelerate. Safely and under control. Walking backwards is the number one way to work these vital muscles and tendons. The main way to do this is by pulling a weighted sled backward. Or by simply walking backwards… There are other great exercises, like doing reverse squats by attaching weights to your foot, and lifting upwards for reps, and other exercises best learned by watching Ben Patrick's wonderful videos on YouTube.Kneesovertoesguy.comBut, I still think the one exercise that everyone should be doing, and this includes your aged parents and siblings, is backward walking. And I believe now that walking backward pulling an elastic band about your hips is not only the most effective way, but by far the most convenient method.By pulling against the anchored elastic band as you walk backward, you overload the movement (as with a weighted sled), but you can do it indoors, deliberately and safely, rapidly building up the musculature that controls deceleration and protects your joints. I do have a sled I rigged up, and use it in my woods on occasion in good weather. But, living in Wisconsin, good weather is often illusive, so I start every workout in my basement dungeon, pulling backward against the band I have looped about my power rack!I usually go for time- 8 minutes seems to be the perfect amount, and is also the perfect warmup. Use a heavy band (legs are strong, even the deconditioned backward part), and watch your knees strengthen as pains and stiffness disappear. This really is almost magical in its effectiveness! That takes care of your entire lower body- you will have not only explosive power built into your legs, but they will be protected from the ravages of degeneration that are ravishing our older people today. Simply by walking backward.Next time, I will address the many problems that occur in the upper body, which are also completely preventable with simple exercises! Simple, natural exercises are a panacea, and weirdly enough, almost no one knows about them. Why? Sadly, because I believe that such natural methods cannot be sold (like drugs and surgeries), and so make no money for the providers. I will go into this more next time, on PaleoJay's Smoothie Cafe.www.paleojay.com
Conventional wisdom these days is to eat more vegetables and grains, and above all cut fat, saturated fat being regarded as particularly evil. Butter and any form of animal fat is the devil incarnate- eat vegetable oils instead! The real truth is petty much the opposite. The foundation of your diet should be animal products. And of those, ironically: butter, eggs, beef tallow, and beef are the very best! And again, contrary to modern fake ‘wisdom': chicken and pork are the worst meat products. They are low in fat generally, true; but the fat in chickens and pigs is generally from what they have eaten, which is usually corn. This corn breaks down into linoleic acid, which is basically a vegetable oil that you get from these meats. Grass-fed pork and pastured chickens are fine but much rarer and far more expensive than beef. And beef, in addition, is far more nutrient dense! So, conventional wisdom is very wrong in general. Think of the old food pyramid in the U.S., which had grains as the base of the pyramid, the bulk of the ideal diet, and then vegetables and things like potatoes and seeds, and then fruits, and then low fat dairy and vegetable oils, and at the top, in the smallest amounts, you would finally find butter, high-fat dairy, and meat, beef being the highest in fat and so the worst…In your diet of today, it should be mostly animal products, primarily beef and beef organs and bone broth, wild-caught seafood is also good, along with eggs, butter or ghee, kefir and yogurt, cheeses (raw is best), cream, and raw milk. After that, you can have fruits (citrus and berries are the best), and vegetables in moderation. Don't lose sight of the fact that many vegetables are loaded with oxalates and other anti-nutrients that are the plant's defense chemicals, and are meant to hurt those who consume them.At the top of the pyramid of today, you will find things like grains and sugar. These are the ‘candy options' that should be kept at a bare minimum! If you do include some bread, real sourdough is your best option (much of the gluten and other anti-nutrients are broken down by the sourdough yeast). And so, there you have it: my Beef with pork and chicken! I don't mean to never include these meats, but they are a ‘second-best' option to that of ruminants, which are what we mainly evolved eating. So go ahead: don't be ‘chicken' to eat beef!
I can just hear so many people on this: “HOW to retire?? What a joke- I already know how to do NOTHING! I'll sleep late, watch TV, and lay around eating whatever I want! Perfect retirement.”Sounds good, but I'm afraid- quite naive and self destructive. Do you really want your retirement to be the same as the life of a welfare person? Someone who has never done a thing productive, and lives an unhealthy life of laziness and squalor? For be assured, a life of ‘doing whatever I want' and self indulgence is exactly that, and leads to a hell on this earth! For to be plain: a life lived in unthoughtful ease and comfort, (with no discipline involved), will result in hell. Not only for you, yourself, but for all who surround you: in your family, and in your community. We are all created to be responsible, to serve a purpose, a role in society. Focus only on yourself, and you will surely devolve into a total piece of shit, and it will be quick and final. Your own self hatred will be the worst punishment of all, and one you should avoid at all costs!So- How to Retire? These are the iron-clad rules of retirement:If you are in a city, especially a big one- get out! Take your equity, and use it to buy a rural, or small town property. In a Red state is best, but in most states rural areas are all Red. Just go where all your neighbors are self-sufficient, and don't rely on Big Government for their livelihood. This is KEY.If you are in a suburb of a big city, this is a bit trickier- you may be OK, but you will be in a very pricey area, and your property taxes will be VERY high. This is because people live in this suburb because they need access to the nearby city, and are willing to pay for being close to, but not within that city, for the safety of their families, and especially the safety of their children in the local schools! Big city schools are, by definition, horrible nightmares where no learning takes place at all, and what does is simply indoctrination and lies. Everyone knows this, but it cannot be mentioned. I am mentioning it, and telling you to stay away- unless you are willing to sacrifice and destroy your own children. ESPECIALLY if they are white, or Asian. So, let's say you are in a rural, small town area, perhaps around a small city that has kept its values largely intact from 60 years ago. Good job! You probably have good libraries, pretty good schools (almost all public schools nowadays are very ‘woke', and so suspect on multiple levels), but if your kids are grown, you should be OK there. After all, you are retired! Right off the bat, your taxes will be far lower. And hopefully you have an acreage that you can work, with a nice garden to tend, a big lawn to mow with your tractor, and ideally a woodlot, with trails to walk through on a daily basis- your own private park! If you are still in a city or big city suburb when you retire, this is probably the time to relocate. Country living is preferable in every single way to city living, especially as you age…OK- you live on a rural acreage, outside of a small city. Everyone you used to know thinks you are crazy, depriving yourself of all the cultural enrichment and diversity of living amongst people totally unlike yourself, and things like opera and symphonies that you can't live without- (although you never went before, and never will now. And the fact that they are all available online at any time!).Your small town police department, or sheriff, will be quite dependable, unlike big city, worthless, woke agencies that see you, the white-privileged victim,
Modern life is seen to be practical and a cut-to-the-essentials type of living. Science will lead us now- no more superstition! And let's be practical, above all! No more Victorian frills and nonsense- from now on, we will ‘cut to the chase' and ‘concentrate on the essentials above all'!Such a viewpoint is very shortsighted, and misses the forest for the trees. Literally. Case in point- Forest bathing, the practice of immersing oneself in nature for as much time as you can muster has been proven to be immensely beneficial. Just by going into a forest, and wandering about (preferably barefoot), rejuvenative effects are huge. This is a national movement in Japan, and has spread worldwide. I suspect, given the industrial, crowded nature of modern Japan, that that is why they discovered how cut off they were from the essentials of nature, and why they felt the urgent need to recapture the benefits of nature itself. In the US, and in Europe, nature used to be known as rejuvenative, and necessary for mental, physical, and spiritual health. I think in places like Switzerland, this is still known and appreciated. But in vast swathes of metropolitan areas, such ideas seem silly and out of date. Why waste time and energy saving inefficient green spaces when it is such a waste of resources, and could be better used as factory or office or parking lot space?Such ideas are stupid, and have led us into a nightmare landscape of high rises and concrete, ghettos and graffiti. In other words, and hell-scape of man's own making. Not that of God!Nature is God's work. Beauty and symmetry. The mercilessness of evolution, but also the exactness of its outcome. What works evolves and improves, endlessly- what does not, becomes extinct. The beautiful ultimately eclipses the ugly, and inefficient. This is Nature at work! And Nature is part of God. There has never been a culture, much less a civilization, that has not recognized the overarching importance of religion. Primitive tribes and cultures have debased, horrible ‘religions' of pain and sacrifice, this is true. The Aztecs of South America spring to mind: they thought the pain of children and their tears, coupled with the tearing of the hearts out of the living breasts of their enemies, was the desire of their gods. They took the debased ideas of their twisted civilization to be the will of God and Nature, when it was really the expression of their own awful desires- they had divorced themselves from Nature and God, and descended into savagery. They had forgotten the true ideals of Nature itself, and attempted to replace it with their own ideas of efficiency, and what they thought ‘really mattered in life'. To them, it was all about control- Controlling Nature, by influencing the gods. (By sacrifice)! To them, religion had devolved into what it has become for modern atheists- a type of State control, in modern times it would be seen as a form of Marxism. Top down, authoritarian control. Efficient and modern, to each as he needs, and from each as to his abilities. Which actually means: to those in charge, everything, and to everyone else, whatever they choose to dole out. Those who produce deserve: nothing extra. The bottom line here is that Nature is beauty incarnate. It is our evolutionary birthright- anything that seeks to take it away from us is pure evil. As is religion. It is an innate part of our being! It is embodied by Nature itself, which has formed our evolution. We are Nature, and Nature is us, and leads us to our religion, which is part of our very selves. We
I know that I have written and spoken about this before. BUT, it's been awhile, and it needs repeating since it is usually ignored: MOST of what you get from the standard medical clinics and doctors is untrue. MOST!The information they give you is self-serving, and mostly misleading. For instance, I was having a conversation today about kidney stones. ‘What causes them,' I was asked. ‘Oxalates from things like kale, spinach, and beet greens” I answered, since I KNOW. Especially when concentrated in things such as green smoothies. So then, I decided to look it up, as if I was someone who did not know. Someone with confidence in the standard medical paradigm of clinic and MD. I read that animal protein and salt create kidney stones. (WRONG)Vitamin C causes kidney stones. (WRONG)Then, I saw online that “global warming causes kidney stones”. Climate Change and the KidneyDo I even need to say that this is wrong, and stupid, and actually retarded??This is the politically correct nonsense that our standard medical practice has devolved to. Here is what you need to know about kidney stones:They are made up of oxalates, which are a plants defense mechanism against being consumed by mammals. Chemical warfare, really: ‘eat me, human, and suffer pain!' Conclusion? Don't eat lots of dark green vegetables; they don't want to be eaten, and are fighting back! Occasional spinach or kale, your body can probably defend against adequately. Green smoothies of such, especially beet greens ( in my case) and you will get kidney stones. And it has nothing to do with animal protein (which is benign), or global warming (which is a political scam) at all. It's simple biology. As is all of medical science. REAL medical science! Most of clinical medicine today is 1970's science, pure and simple. Outdated ideas, reiterated over and over for many decades. Wrong then, wrong now.But gospel regardless- because there is a huge financial incentive to keep the charade up and running.‘Cholesterol is very important to track and medicate'. (An outdated lie)‘Blood pressure, whatever the age, should be 120 over 80 or else heavy medication is necessary to prevent death'. (Another extreme lie to sell blood pressure medications, that don't extend life for one single day).‘Kidney stones are caused by global warming'. (Do I even need to comment again??)This is what has become of Western medicine. They are still good at civil war type of triage medicine, which is keeping you alive after a gunshot or an automobile accident with major trauma. (This is what modern medicine evolved from during the civil war, and which they are still very good at).But as for keeping you well, and disease free? They are now just profit-based witch doctors, overall. You need to be your own doctor! You really do. Most modern doctors will sabotage your health, because profit is the reason for being of their clinic, not health or anything that you desire! This is the sad truth, and it is a real TRUTH! It's all about the money. This is what has happened to our country while we were not paying attention. Covid was all about money. (Not the real disease- it was political, and manipulated via media to manipulate all of US.)And so are most standard diseases as well!
I know, working out twice per day sure doesn't sound like a way to save time…But bear with me. This scheme has been working wonderfully well for me for months now.Months ago, I started incorporating Ben Patrick's ‘Knees Over Toes' exercises into my routine. If you haven't started doing his revolutionary exercises of strengthening throughout the entire range of motion to restore and enhance function, it's time to start!I have worked out religiously since about age 20 for my entire life. I have no back or joint issues, despite working out heavily and having turned 70 recently. Then, I watched some of Ben's amazing videos on YouTube, about how he almost destroyed his body playing basketball in his youth. He could barely hobble around, and after various surgeries he was told he would never play basketball competitively again- not good news for someone in his early 20's!But Ben persisted, and with the guidance of mentor Charles Polaquin the strength coach, rebuilt himself from the ground up. It is inspiring, to say the least to watch what he can do in terms of jumping and flexibility after having rebuilt himself.https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1a6nfG69c9gI have already made significant progress in lower body flexibility and functional strength. For me, as I suspect it is for most, it's not about increasing jumping ability and sprint speeds so much, as it is about dramatically strengthening my knees, ankles and other joints, along with greatly enhanced flexibility. And in this I am being very successful.Using tibialis raises, which I actually discovered long ago, I cured my plantar fascitis completely. I have always stretched, but now, by stretching under load I am greatly strengthening my weak points- I work my hamstrings with ‘reverse squats', attaching dumbbells to my feet and lifting upwards for high reps, one leg at a time. Sled drags, done backwards, are his preeminent overall lower body exercise, as they work the feet and toes, along with the entire lower body and joints, very protectively. If you do nothing else of his, do backwards walking! Sled or not, this is the number one way to avoid knee surgery.Lately, the idea of walking backwards against the resistance of a band was recommended- this works amazingly well! Just loop a long resistance band around your power rack support, or a post or other strong point of resistance. Step inside it, and walk backwards with it about your hips, feeling each step and its resistance. Walk forward, and repeat for a few minutes- you are done! Make it your daily workout warmup, and your joints and the many tendons of your lower body will thank you for your entire life.I slowly worked the ATG (ass to grass) split squat- for now with only body weight, but gradually adding resistance. This is a very protective and productive movement; one which I needed to progress with assistance within a power rack to fully achieve at first, even though I had squatted my whole life! This ability is probably the single most protective and powerful thing you can do to transform your entire lower body!Jefferson curls, done from a platform and slowly lowering a weighted bar as low as you can below your toes, coupled with nordic curls; where you curl your upper body up backwards with your legs held down, work your hamstrings and lower back better than anything. I suggest you watch the ‘Knees over toes guy' videos repeatedly- subscribe on YouTube, as he is always refining what he does. Ben Patrick is an excellent coach. In fact, you can hire him to coach you for a monthly fee.
Drop Acid is the clever title of a new book by David Perlmutter, neurologist. This is a ground-breaking book, with new knowledge of the importance of uric acid in your life. And believe me: even if you've never heard of uric acid, or more commonly only see its importance in the relationship it has to gout- after reading this science heavy book, you will realize that uric acid is of utmost importance in relation to your overall health! If you keep track of your uric acid levels, which is a waste product of your own body, and also a breakdown of purines in various foods, such as liver, and especially beer. Uric acid does cause the painful disease of gout, and until recently that is the only causative damaging effect it was thought to have. If you ask your doctor your uric acid level, and do not have gout, he will ask you why you want to know. That is the only pertinent fact he knows about uric acid.Unfortunately, uric acid predicts overall mortality hugely! If your uric acid level is above a certain level, it can predict that you will get high blood pressure, heart disease, and alzheimer's and dementia. Metabolic syndrome is directly caused by high uric acid, and this leads to most of the modern diseases such as obesity, and eventually diabetes. Uric acid is a crucial measurement; an insidious poison if you will. Liver is, of course, a crucial source of important nutrients! But, in excess it can be problematic, and it breaks down into uric acid. I would say to keep liver to once a week or so, and it should be no problem, and actually a plus. Beer is a different story, a story that here I will tell:I have always been a beer drinker, as it is something that I really enjoy, and felt was largely harmless in moderation. My blood pressure has always been somewhat high, which also never concerned me much; my father had high blood pressure, and lived to 97 without problem. I thought that it was a largely bogus measurement introduced by the medical conglomerates to sell blood pressure pills. For instance, did you know that although blood pressure medications do lower blood pressure artificially- they do not extend longevity at all?? And so, what is the point of them?Perlmutter is a convincing writer and speaker who I have followed for years. I decided to follow his prescriptions. I stopped drinking beer at all! The rest of his prescriptions I have followed for decades: ensuring good sleep, exercise daily, spend time in nature, a good paleo sort of diet with good fats (no vegetable oils) and low carbs and very low sugar…And each week, I would check my blood pressure. It just dropped steadily, week by week. The only real change I made was to substitute wine for beer. Nothing else.It continues to drop. I had a few beers for my 70th birthday celebration, and decidedd to stop checking for a few days. (I'm sure it went up a bit).I will let you know my end result. But, I will say this: drinking wine (I use the boxed wines that are readily available and cheap)- I just feel better, overall! It's as if I can literally feel I am in a more relaxed state, as my overall blood pressure lowers itself. Oh, I also drink hard apple cider, which is made with wine yeast, and is in actuality more of a fruit wine than a beer.Other things that help to drop uric acid are to drink tart cherry juice (I use it as one of the bases of my daily smoothie now, along with kefir, cruciferous veggies, berries and citrus. Vitamin C, Quercitin, Luteolin, and Magnesium are also said to be helpful in cutting the uric acid.I will keep checking my blood pressure, and will keep you apprised as to my
Ok- the paleo diet was ground breaking in every way! It was actually started by a man named Walter Voegtlin, who was a gastroenterologist. He called it the ‘Stone Age Diet', a diet that eliminated most all foods that came after the agricultural revolution approximately 10,000 years ago. After him, Loren Cordain is the one who revived it around 2005. This is when I discovered it, and even wrote to Cordain about a health problem of my wife, and he graciously responded. We adopted his diet, and her health problem resolved completely, and quickly! That is when PaleoJay was born…Other Paleo gurus emerged, all of which had a lot to offer in different ways. As in most other things, the approach evolved as more was discovered. Trial and error, along with lots of research, caused the theory to evolve. The one thing that remained constant was the ever-present knowledge, revealed by archeological records, that health and overall wellness had been far better for ancient humans when they consumed an evolutionarily correct diet: only sourdough and otherwise processed grains allowed, if consumed at all, in minimal amounts. The same with sweeteners like sugar, which were largely unknown to our ancestors. My health, and that of my family, improved dramatically from around 2005 to today. My body fat dropped quickly, which revealed my long-exercising body that was buried beneath it. My migraine headaches went away quickly and completely, and I largely stopped cardio or ‘aerobic' types of training for long periods, going only for sprints or ‘heavy hands' walking while swinging dumbbells energetically. I worked way more on flexibility, and began running and walking barefoot- voila- my feet problems also disappeared!Robb Wolf, Loren Cordain's student, emerged as a guru, and led lots of folks on the evolving path of paleo. Chris Kresser was a voice of reason throughout, as were Beverly Meyer and Mark Sisson. I took ideas from each one, tested them in my own life, and either kept or discarded them as I learned and experienced more. Jimmy Moore was a voice of cheerful reason, and his many, many guests kept me informed and enlightened over the years, primarily about proper nutrition. But my ideas about exercise also continually kept evolving, with the lifting of really heavy weights being revealed as problematic, and unnecessary, just as had aerobics and cardio earlier on. The importance of sleep kept rearing its head, as did ancillary practices like forest bathing and the importance of sunlight and then true darkness to maintain our circadian rhythm.A couple of years ago or so, the term Paleo itself kind of disappeared! Now, magazines at the supermarket checkout and the new bestseller books were all about KETO. It was very similar to paleo, but instead of being about a totality of lifestyle being reached through diet and other practices- now it was just consume lots and lots of fat! This, coupled with zero carbs, resulted in fast fat loss; and it appears that, overall: this is basically all the majority of people care about.Keto is, therefore, very one dimensional; focussing on fat loss almost entirely. It is really more, to me, of a therapeutic, short term view of how to live. If you force your body to live off of ketones, of basically FAT, you become, as Mark Sisson puts it: a fat burner. So, your body is running off of the cleanest fuel it can. This way, it can avoid seizures in epileptics, for instance, which has been known about for a very long time.CARNIVORE is the latest form of evolutionary nutritional diets. Shawn Baker, Paul Saladino, and a host of others now to
So you are anticipating retirement? Great- I did too for a long time, and I have good news for you: it can be wonderful! Fulfilling, satisfying, and a long sight better than working a 9-5 job endlessly. I have been retired now for 6 years, and am 69 years old and happier (and healthier) than I have ever been. But then, I also know a number of people who are very UNhappy in retirement, sadly. They are like rudderless ships; with all day and all night at their disposal to do with as they will- they just drift. The default is always television, and unfortunately before they retired, they set the stage for their retirement life by coming home at night and - watching TV!This has been exacerbated by the Covid lockdown, which has been a total disaster from the start, and basically accomplished nothing positive, in my opinion. People have become addicted to streaming services, particularly leftist politically correct shows like those of Netflix. Again, nothing positive accomplished…What you need to do, wherever you are in your working life, is to start planning your total life, from start to finish. Nothing dramatic, just determine those activities that you would like to continue forever, not just now while you are working, but also afterwards, when you are not chained to a job for survival itself! One thing that is the same for everyone is that your main goal, lifelong, but especially starting on the day that you retire it health and fitness! So, whether you are 20 now or 60- research, equip yourself for, and begin working on a fitness regimen, both of exercise and nutrition! In my case, this meant adopting the paleo diet years ago, and setting up a complete basement gym complete with gymnastic rings, barbells and dumbbells, and loads of plates. Enough for a lifetime! A power rack is a wonderful investment, and will last you forever. You can pick and choose what works best for you over time- the bottom line is that you should work out at home. A yoga mat in your living room and perfect pushup devices along with an ab wheel can work wonders- especially since, as long as you are working out, watching TV is a wonderful distraction to do only in tandem with active workouts! And if you've been with me for any length of time (I've been doing my blog and podcast for well over 11 years now), you will know of all of my recommendations of how and where to work out (at home along with in the woods and on your grass in the yard or park), using heavy hands types of dumbbells and ski poles. And gymnastic rings are probably the best kept secret of fitness there is, whether hung from the rafters in your basement like me, or strung up outside from a tree or other type of structure, like a basketball hoop support. They are like a gym you can carry in your hands. So, let's say you have a regular workout schedule set up, on a daily or almost daily basis. Good for you- you are half way to a happy and healthy retirement! Stay healthy and fit, and you avoid the #1 cause of bad retirements: constant medical visits and treatments. You can take that time and go out to lunch with your spouse: trust me, after a working life of rushed lunches and dinners, the simple pleasure of going out for lunch after a satisfying workout, and then running a few errands is heavenly! And be sure to pick up something at the grocery for your supper later, which you will have ample time to prepare and enjoy…But again, since you should NOT watch television in the evenings, you need to have things scheduled for those hours, and other times in the afternoon and morning when you are unoccupied. The computer is great, as long as you mostly avoid social media and other nonsen
When I suggest that you find your own homeland, I mean that you should not live in the same area in which you were born and grew up- unless that area is a rural, or small town conservative kind of place. Also, if you live in a solid blue, authoritarian state like Illinois, California, or New York, you should leave! We are in strange times, and the very constitution of the United States is under attack by the new Jacobins.By this I mean the current ‘Democrats', who no longer have any similarity to the former party of that name, and are now simply Jacobins, or in more modern parlance: Marxists. If you know of, or remember the French Revolution, you probably know that, although it started because of an extreme inequality between the middle class and the ruling elite, it ended up in an extreme overreaction, and a slaughter of many, many people by the guillotine. Also, the Jacobins, as these revolutionaries were called, decided to completely revamp French society itself, and were in every way like the modern cancel culture democrats are today! They began by killing all of the royal rulers, innocent or guilty, and then they turned on one another. They decided to rename the names of the months, change history, and even questioned established knowledge (like math) that had been the bedrock of Western civilization. They divided people into different groups, endlessly, and turned on one another, always with the specter of the guillotine lurking in the background.Sound familiar? If not, it should: the Democrats of today are, as I said, the new Jacobins, or French Revolutionaries! They would up destroying everything worthwhile in their own homeland, accusing one another endlessly for everything wrong in their own lives, and killing anyone who contested their truth. Their supreme leader, Robespierre, was extremely bloodthirsty, and ordered the execution of many. He wanted the disarmament of the public, and wanted only those of the “new fraternity” to have arms. When the murderous regime was ended with his execution, at last the killing stopped. To get a good feeling of the times of this leftish revolution, I recommend the Dickens book ‘Tale of Two Cities'. But let's get back to today: today's Jacobins are busy dividing us into different races and classes, and not only banning books (like ‘Huckleberry Finn'), but introducing noxious, destructive policies like ‘defund the police' and supporting district attorneys that let criminals out with a signature bond the same day they are arrested! Absolute madness, and only designed to destroy our conservative, well-working, democratic republic from within. And so, let's get back to my main premise- get out of such Jacobin/liberal/Democrat cities and states! If you are a paleo, tribal sort of person, you need to get into areas that will leave you alone. Places that will let you raise your family without awful interference from these authoritarian know-it-alls that actually know less than a baby. Low IQ leaders are anathema to society, and civilization itself! Just look at current South Africa, where there are daily riots over bread, where before it was a well-run modern outpost of Western civilization. Now, just as in ALL of our major American, blue, leftist cities: they are all virtual HELLS! Rampant crime and killings, no lasting arrests, and everything just gets worse and worse. It is undeniable. So, do it. Move your family, and urge your friends as I am doing right now, to get the hell out! I think things will ultimately turn around, just as they did in France long ago, but only after a lot of chaos, nonsense, and violence- all for nothing. As is always the case with the Left, destru
If you are one of those people who run to the clinic to see a doctor for any little ailment, or just to get endless check ups to make sure you are all right; well, you are doing it all wrong my friend! No offense, but medical interventions are usually the cause of more harm than good.Iatrogenesis is the term that defines this: it means death by doctor. This means that the treatment or examination you undergo causes harm. Hippocrates, the founder of Western medicine from 2500 years ago in Greece, had as his fundamental tenet to early healers to first, do no harm! In modern times, this prime directive has been discarded…Death by doctor is now the third leading cause of death! Now, does this make you want to visit your doctor more often? I certainly hope not: I would advise you to live as people used to live until around the 1970's in the US at least. Back in the 50's and 60's, when I grew up, we only went to the doctor if we were gravely injured or on our deathbed from a real sickness. Doctors could do things like set broken bones, or remove a ruptured appendix, or take a bullet out of your body. They were like human bodywork mechanics, similar to their car repair similar types of workers. Nothing fancy, they just tried to get the job done. Now though? Doctors and hospitals, which throughout time were places to avoid as much as possible, are now depicted as places to go to become and remain healthy. We are all urged endlessly to go in, get examined (even if we feel great), and to search for ways to be ‘improved' by medical interventions: drugs and surgeries; endless drugs and surgeries! It is never mentioned that drugs, and surgeries- all have side effects. Endless side effects, that are often far worse than the imagined ‘conditions' we are told we have! It has reached the point where, if you go in to get ‘checked out', based upon only your age, say: they will prescribe all kinds of drugs to you! (With all kinds of side effects that treat your supposed ‘conditions' that the doctor has found within you.You have to ask yourself this- do humans need drugs and surgeries to survive? If this were true, we would have died out long ago- our grandparents never had this stuff done to them, and they lived long and happy lives, generally. Childbirth was very dangerous in the old days, for both mother and child, and that has been largely solved. Mainly by early discoveries of sanitation like washing hands between autopsies and deliveries, things like that…But overall, our health since the 1970's or so has steadily worsened. The medical recommendations of low fat, high carb and sugar along with limited red meat has resulted in epidemics of heart disease and cancer, along with a skyrocketing of diabetes! This is largely because we now have a health care system that is government regulated, and financed as well via employer insurance along with Medicare and Medicaid. Because we the public perceive that now we no longer have to pay for it- why, we will go to the doctor all the time! It's free, after all. So, the health care costs go up and up and up, far beyond what a normal person could really pay- but we don't care. It's “free”! We agree to any shot or procedure, and surgery or bodily mutilation and especially to free drugs. Drugs that mess with our minds and bodies beyond what anyone could have ever imagined just a few decades ago…All of this has even become political- the Leftist Democrat party of Big Government running everything has destroyed our collective health in a huge way, and now recommend massive injecti
I am 69 years old. I mention this because it explains where I am at, and I want to discuss how priorities change over the years. Not completely, but what is most important to you at age 20 or so is not the same as what you value most at age 40, 50, 60, or even (gulp) 70!Some things do stay the same, at least if you have chosen your priorities wisely. Health and fitness were always important to me, although organized sports never were. I was into cross country and track in high school, and music was also important. I was a skinny kid, and so weight lifting, and then body building became important in my college days. Good nutrition became paramount then, since you can't build up from bad food. I loved how good I felt!I was never motivated by money, for good or ill. I don't say it's good or bad, but for me money just wasn't ‘it'. Not my raison detre, or reason for being. I loved reading and literature, philosophy, music and only desired to earn money by honest physical labor. Most of my peers back in the 1970's were into business, and earning as much as possible, and how was far more important than why!Fast forward to now; I hope you're not bored. I'm going to make a point, rest assured pilgrim…I still train pretty much daily. But now, my goal is not so much to be bigger and stronger (through the 50's that was kind of a constant), but to be healthy. VERY healthy- bulletproof really! Not just me, but my tribe and family- healthy and fit, mentally and physically- thriving in every way. Spiritually, mentally, physically: (just like in the Wizard of Oz), when the munchkins are determining whether or not the witch is truly dead!At 69, I want myself, and all about me, to be immune. Safe from all disease, all frailties of aging, and above all free from captivity to the medical clinic paradigm of disease treatment! I want to remain free of disease, aches and pains, and mainly free from the medications, operations, and many other plagues of modern medicine! And I am increasingly convinced that medical treatments themselves are some of the most horrific aspects of modern life and aging! My mother's brother, Uncle Bob, just celebrated his 99th birthday last week. He celebrated by playing in his band, and dancing with his daughter and grand daughters. He only went to the doctor once in his life, when he enlisted in the army during WW2. No vaccines ever, and he can do anything that I can do today- he posed for his latest family photo (he has 12 children), sitting cross-legged in front of them all! This is my role model. (My mom is 95, and independent at home), while Aunt Janie is 98 in a few weeks, and takes no prescription drugs at all. I believe Uncle Bob should be the role model for us all.So Uncle Bob and his siblings are winners in life. Bulletproof! And that is where I am heading as well, and I hope you too will follow along. My workouts now are brief, yet intense. I workout in the early mornings in front of the TV (as I often say), and that keeps me completely faithful. Who would miss a workout when that is the only time I allow myself to watch movies and news? At least one half of my morning workout is stretching, since as you age that becomes ever more important. But it also includes sit ups, virtual resistance flexing, rebounding, self-resisted exercises and isometrics, and pushups.I have a rural property, (by design), and my mornings are usually taken up with yard work, snow plowing, mowing, gardening, cutting wood, and all the other satisfying yet demanding physical work of country liv
Ben Patrick, the Knees Over Toes Guy http://kneesovertoesguy.com is a force to be reckoned with! I have found, lo over these many years of seeking and discovering fitness and health, that certain pivotal figures tend to pop up as you go. Frank Zane, body builder of the 60's and 70's along with Arnold Swarzzenegger inspired me early on. Loren Cordain of early paleo, then Robb Wolf helped to guide me after that, along with others, into a focus on true health and nutrition. Chris Kresser is always a guiding light of health, and Mark Sisson has some points of light he has pointed out over the years. And John Peterson was a revelation in terms of exercise, although he is now retired from the scene somewhere…But young Ben Patrick comes along, and appears to have done everything wrong in his youth, trying to play basketball only to ruin his knees and athletic aspirations young, by following conventional medical advice advocating always keeping your knees over your toes when exercising! This, as has been said for decades upon decades, is the only way to protect your knees, shins, hips, and feet from damage.Au contraire mon frère! Sounds like Bart Simpson, doesn't it? As young Ben followed this prescription, he progressively destroyed his knees, and got surgery after surgery for his pains. Finally, since he is the type of young guy who does not give up, he started experimenting on his own body, consciously and deliberately figuring out on his own (with the help of strength coach Charles Polinquin who I remember reading back in the day) how to strengthen all the muscles around the knee, and down through the hips to the feet! It worked!Following his own methods, Ben added over 2 feet to his vertical jump (his passion is basketball), but more importantly totally bulletproofed his knees, hips, shins and feet to absorb all the shocks of athletics and the stress of aging as well.He rebuilt his 66 year old mother's legs as well, and he documents her on videos too! And the best part of all is that, watching him on youtube, he reveals all of his exercises and progressions online, showing how you too can duplicate his results.Given all of his information, I have been inspired to add in his exercises within my own daily workouts. I have no knee pain, or indeed any pains at all, but I want to make sure that I never do- besides which, his exercises cover areas of the body in ways that are sure to avoid injury as opposed to big compound exercises like squats and deadlifts that, while strengthening overall, do not specialize safely on some muscle groups that are crucial. You can go to failure on things like weighted leg raises (he uses a monkey foot device that holds a dumbbell to your foot) and curls, and won't be injured as you would doing exercise to failure on squats or deadlifts. Completely safe! Also, his split squat progressions and his very crucial tibialis exercise can totally protect, strengthen, and bullet proof you from foot to hip. And so, I have revamped my weekly workouts to include them all, in one form or another. In my early morning, I make coffee (pour over in a simple Miata coffee maker), and then go barefoot in shorts into my living room. I stretch, and do virtual resistance exercises, manually resisted ones, and isometrics. I spend about an hour, as I watch a movie or news on television, and wind up pleasantly exhausted and all stretched out! I often finish then with high volume pushups and straight legged situps. I have thus stimulated my entire body from feet to neck. But, usually 3 times per week, sometimes only 2, I go down to my basement dungeon and do gymnastic
I kind of hate to rain on anyone's parade, particularly those who believe in the benefits of exercise! But the thing it this: exercise is something that improves one's body, something that makes you better physically. Makes you stronger, more flexible, and/or more enduring. That is the whole point of it!But we have been misled about this most important point- nowadays, any slightly demanding activity is put down as exercise. Slowly jogging, or walking. (Not exercise, not really- too undemanding and short of stimulating a physical improvement of any sort.) And of course, things like: TennisBowling FootballSoccerDancingSwimmingBicyclingOlympic weight liftingDarts….I hope you get it by now. Sports are recreation, not exercise per se. Although some activities (I.e. Sports) are physically demanding, some more than others, they do not qualify as true exercise. Exercise is a means of attaining greater physical health and ability. Lifting weights, or using body weight resistance to improve muscular strength and function, and doing it in a manner that improves heart and lung cardio function at the same time- this is true exercise!Playing any sport at all- this is recreation. The point is to have fun, not to improve your health and fitness. Doing real exercise (Perfectly Paleo Exercise), will make you stronger and more flexible and enduring, and this will definitely help your sports performance! But merely to play in your sport, while it will make you better in the skills necessary to that sport- it will probably not make you stronger, or more flexible, or more cardio vascularly fit. It will probably only make you prone to injuries…Pro football players, for instance: they train in the weight room, primarily, in the off-season to “get in shape” for the playing season. Then, as they ‘play', they get injured, or not, but they get less fit as the season wears on, they become de-condishened while they are playing their little hearts out. Less fit, as they do their sport!Again: sports are not exercise. Exercise is exercise, and it is for one purpose only: to improve bodily function and performance. It is not meant to be fun! Exercise is a task, to achieve an end; to make you stronger, faster, and more flexible and resilient. Like brushing your teeth is meant to improve your dental hygiene. Not fun, but very useful!Long distance running will not make you ‘healthy' or fit. It will wear you out, destroy your joints, and make you markedly less healthy and fit. Playing tennis will not make you more healthy, strong and fit- it will injure you eventually, and while it may be fun, it is not about health and fitness, not at all!The same is true of any other sport. The sport itself, whether water polo, ballroom dancing, power lifting, synchronized swimming, or handball…They might be fun, and demanding- but they do not qualify as true exercise, meaning something that makes you more fit. They are just too pleasant, and too easy.True exercise is hard, uncomfortable, safe, and brief! In contrast, most sports are relatively easy (hence enjoyable), comfortable, often unsafe, and long in duration. This makes sense: sports are for fun. True exercise is work. Work for improvement! Totally different goals…To improve your body- have a schedule exercises to accomplish. Concentrate on them, and do them to near failure- they should be
So very many people (most probably) look at their periodic vacations as being the most valued part of their life. The ONE thing that they focus on, and that is the most valuable part of their lives! They travel overseas, they go to white sand beaches and stay in fancy hotels and dine in amazing restaurants. They may even do a little ‘Zumba' or other hotel-sanctioned quasi-fitness activities to give the illusion of becoming healthy…Here is what I believe we should do instead:Strive to build a life that is sustainable, and something that you can do happily for the rest of your life. “Simplify, simplify…” as Henry Thoreau said. True contentment and happiness does not mean transitory situations that will impress your vapid friends on Facebook and cost lots of money and time. Really think it through, and figure out what will really make you content and happy, without being concerned about the opinions of others.Long term, if we are looking back at our lives, what would pretty much ALL of us want to see as accomplishments? A satisfying work life, that includes winding up with a happy spouse and children, and resulting in similar grandchildren. And hopefully, all would be living nearby, in an area that we all loved, and felt a part of. A kind of an ethnic homeland, in which we all were valued and were a vital part of.A modest, yet comfortable home, with surrounding acreage and woodlands, to both sustain and nourish us in work and in play. A small community, of which we are a vital part, and which we contribute to both in local government and the schools. A community that relies on local government, not state or federal to sustain it- one in which the ordinary citizen is in control! We would all want to have interests; hobbies if you will, that are consuming passions. Writing, music, art, woodworking or gardening- it really doesn't matter, just so long as you find it absorbing and interesting! I think most people, after working for long years, have discarded their true interests and just gone with what is practical for making money…This is why they focus on the Vacation Illusion! It's kind of as if you are wandering through an oppressive desert, and you are constantly scanning the horizon for something better- anything really-And then, a mirage appears: a vision of the Wonderful Vacation; something that is almost too good to be true: you in a paradise of travel agent utopia, lying on a beach, somehow totally fit and healthy, and fulfilled in every way!But trust me, this mirage vacation is too good to be true. Even if your 2 week or so paradise is fun, it is all too fleeting. What we all truly desire is a permanent paradise- and it is not that hard to achieve!A simple job, one that sustains you and your family in a rural, red area of America. A small town oriented type of place, where the local people control the schools and government. A place where federal and state governmental mandates are hopefully small and inconsequential. A small enough place for your voice to be heard!A place where taxes are not oppressive, and your children can grow and be educated without horrors like busing, quotas, or multi-cultural racist nonsense. The west and the midwest are the best bets for Americans nowadays. Far from big blue cities and their Democrat rulers.A smaller kind of place where medical clinics and hospitals are confined to simple things, like broken bones, infectious diseases, and the like. Not politically based hoaxes and scams, and scaremongering. Just real health things.
http://www.paleojay.comThe truth is definitely in: the whole fiasco of Ken Cooper's Aerobics mania is dead. Along with the high fat diet is the worst, and the even earlier notion of ‘better living through chemistry' which promoted the noxious idea that drugs could not only prolong our lives, but improve them.Despite Elvis and all the other following celebrities who were convinced that those ‘god-like' prescription drugs could only make their lives better- after all, hadn't science invented all of technology like cars and airplanes and tv- shouldn't our biology also be improved upon by science and technology?Well, no. As the whole Paleo Diet and lifestyle revolution showed us, basically we are unchanged since our paleolithic past, biologically. Evolution is very, very slow, just as it is unforgiving of bad missteps. (We are currently devolving intellectually in the Western world, sadly, because of bad ideas about immigration and multiculturalism, that are lowering our average IQ and diluting the obvious strengths of our culture. But that is for another podcast.)And so, by switching to a high-grain and vegetable, low fat and less animal based diet, we severely impacted our health and vigor to the negative! Just as we did when we succumbed (as most do today) to the idea that more drugs and medication are better. (They most definitely are not better.)The NORM should be that a human being should be taking no drugs whatsoever, whatever the age. Drugs, whether prescription or illegal, can only make our overall health worse, not better! Our bodies are amazing things, and will inevitably thrive if we do certain evolutionary, and common sense time-honored things:Live in harmony with the natural world. Get out in the woods and fields, barefoot, and move in nature. Breathe pollen and fresh air, drink pure water from springs and wells. (Not chlorinated/fluoridated pool water as most cities provide). Stretch and move your joints through a full range of motion daily. And do strength types of training on a regular basis, not cardio/aerobics!Since the Aerobics boom in the 70's and beyond, we expected to see a fit, vibrant group of practitioners flourish all about us, inspiring us to emulate their wonderful health achievements! Yet, despite them training for and running marathons, half-marathons, and many other iterations of long distance running, the results we see no are just destroyed hips, knees, feet, and backs from meaningless pounding and jarring. Also, the endless low intensity work just encouraged the body to shed vital muscle tissue, and even impacted the organs as the body interpreted the conditions of evolution to be such that getting rid of tissue at any cost was a necessity, now that the body was being pushed to carry itself for endless miles, day after day, without letup! Also, calorie consuming was vital, since it took energy to endlessly run, so eating bad processed carbs and grains seemed to make sense to this aerobically abused body. And so, people were encouraged to push their bodies like this, at a long, tortuous low-level exertion, day after day, forever. I believe that this forced the body, over time, to succumb to cancer, since the immune system cannot function while being so endlessly insulted and taxed! And when these folks stopped running, because of endless injuries and immune diseases that also proliferated in their bodies because of this constant depletion of resources, without necessary rest and recuperation- why, they just got fat!Depleted of muscle because of endless aerobic demands, these aerobicize
I try to keep you all updated as to what I learn along this paleo journey. Sometimes, as in anything increased experience and research results in slight changes on the path. This doesn’t mean the path itself is invalid; it simply means that constant attention reveals small changes may be desirable. For instance, now in the grocery checkout aisles (where at LAST I am no longer required to wear a stupid, ineffective mask!) I see the dumb women’s magazines touting ‘KETO DIET’! instead of Paleo, or Atkins, or Low Fat, or Vegan Run Wild diets. I think Paleo was rejected as a term, since most women think of themselves as Progressives. But whatever: the term makes the most descriptive sense for the proper diet of HUMANS!A ketogenic diet is fine, with NO carbs and LOTS of fat, and ample protein. But it is so extreme, it is clinical, really. If I was diabetic, or had epilepsy, I would certainly go that route! But for most of us? Nope. Paleo, or a total Carnivore diet fills the bill the best. Including organ meats, which almost no one eats now, although our paleolithic ancestors not only included those meats, but positively prized them. They ate nose-to-tail, and so should we!If you do eat grains, you should seek out real sour dough breads and nut-based crackers- and keep them in small amounts only. Your carbs should be kept quite low, which should be obvious since the deplorable state of modern health is defined by obesity- caused by HUGE consumption (by historical standards) of carbs and sugars! But, enough of that- this is meant to address exercise. For many years, my exercise life has consisted of long sorts of workouts, and then long rests. 1 and 1/2 hour workouts, two or three times per week, very intense. Of course, I also had a very active, physical job and life outside of the gym. Now, though, I have begun a different approach. One that is not only less exhausting and actually kind of something to dread- but is actually quite pleasant, and more effective! Hard to believe, but sometimes easier is better.Every single day, unless it is unavoidable, I get up and do a stretching workout. I do it in front of the television, and that is the only time I watch TV throughout the day. So, I really look forward to it! I watch news, and then switch to a movie via Amazon Prime or some such. (I have dropped Netflix- it has become the standard of progressive politics brain washing and political correctness.) I suggest you drop it too!I’ve talked of this before, but doing Virtual Resistance types of exercise, putting your musculature through a full range of motion with each limb. Here is a demonstration: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DI65LRENdKo&t=27sThis type of workout, if you do it faithfully, is more than enough to keep you fit for your whole life! Really. I always start with that. Then, I go to the floor, and stretch. In every way that I can- yoga like, not like yoga, and simply pushing my body and spine to stay supple and flexible! It’s really not complicated. Experiment!Sometimes I end up with straight legged situps and pushups in high numbers, and often with isometrics holds with either a strap or my Exergenie from the 1960’s! (They still sell the Exergenie, but it is expensive now. A nylon straps works almost as well…)Then, having watched about an hour’s worth of a movie and business news, I head to the shower. I’m not tired- just invigorated and informed and entertained! My day begins then with breakfast (a pale
Now, you know I am using a bit of hyperbole here, right? You won’t necessarily die- but you will definitely regret not doing so, and I mean really, really, really regret it!Remember prices in the 1950’s or 60’s, when gasoline was 19 cents or so, and candy bars were a nickel? And prices of everything else were similarly minuscule compared to today? If you don’t actually remember it, like I do, you can certainly look it up, or talk to someone who does. Or even remember prices from 10 or 20 years ago. That is inflation, and it is both insidious, and ruinous. We have all been forced to invest aggressively our whole adult lives, at least those of us who are paying attention, and have an IQ above 85 or so. Ironically, most of us in Western civilization are not really all that interested in investing, in studying the stock market constantly and spending our lives in such a manner. In fact, very few are- most of us have families, and interests apart from growing and maintaining wealth, and wish that we didn’t have to spend so much time monitoring our investments, simply to maintain the purchasing power of whatever little we have!We shouldn’t have to. If the money we earned and saved simply stayed the same in purchasing power, if our IRA money would still cover the cost of gasoline at .19 a gallon, and other prices likewise stayed the same- why, there would be no problem. Our investments would not need to increase endlessly, year after year after year, since inflation would not happen! The Romans had a fiat currency, just as we do. Because of big government (think Roman Empire rather than the early Republic), the emperors, the Bidens and other Democrats of that day (the elites) pushed inflation by continually spending more and more money. Money they did not have, just as today. They spent this money on Welfare (the dole then), and Circuses and gladiatorial events (the Netflix of today), and of course mainly on enriching themselves, (the elite). Back then, money could not simply be printed like today, with no gold backing it, since money was actual coins. So, they put less and less precious gold into the coins, until they were at last less than 1% gold!Of course, the people were not so stupid as to fall for this, and they would ‘bite’ the coins to ascertain the percentage of gold, and eventually the coins of Rome were almost worthless. This is precisely where we are today! The stock market is roaring, since the Democrats under Biden, (the new patrician class as opposed to the working middle class or small landholders, just as in Roman times) have been sending endless checks to everyone to not work. To be bribed into becoming serfs, people supported by the government on the Dole of our times, who take no responsibility for themselves, their families, or their own communities.“Take this money (little as it is), and you don’t have to work! Good Democrat in the making!”Soon, after all of this (worthless) printing of endless, really almost totally fake money, extreme inflation will assert itself, as it always does, and always has done! And your money will become ever more worthless, day by day, and then hour by hour! Investments can no longer save you! Bitcoin can save you, pilgrim! GBTC is a mutual fund that can hold bitcoin for you, if you don’t want to deal with the real thing. Get it for your IRA. You can also just go to Coinbase.com, and buy crypto currencies (not JUST Bitcoin- I like Bitcoin
It’s kind of sad to reach the autumn of your years, only to realize that the civilization you were reared in- Western Civilization- the most vital and successful civilization of all time, is foundering! Now, I don’t mean that it is failing, but it is in crisis. Just as ancient Greece, and then ancient Rome, which picked up the mantle only to founder in its turn; the incredible vitality and liberating truth of this ultimate of all civilizations is in trouble. And, just like those earlier incarnations, upon which our own civilization is built today, it is being destroyed not from without, not at all. It is being destroyed from within, by self-deluded traitors who actually see themselves as wonderful liberators of white supremacy, rather than as the manipulated, entitled losers that are being used to destroy everything their ancestors have laboriously built that they truly are! Now, only entitled losers could be so misled as to believe that to give away, to erase their own culture is a good thing! It’s not. What is going on now, in the western world, is a voluntary erasure of all that our ancestors have built- the knowledge, the technology, mathematics, the very refined culture and science that have created modern life- all of this is now evil. It’s as if witch doctors have taken over the universities, the halls of congress, and corporate America! This shows how low we can sink, when fashion supplants reason, reality, and argument. For, if you base your ideas on what is fashionable: Hollywood and celebrities, emotion rather than reason and logic- this is the end of civilization. In such a situation, Biden seems like a great president! A senescent puppet seems vital and desirable as a leader! So must have said the Romans when they welcomed Caligula as emperor…We are now in real crisis. With a sock puppet emperor in charge, we know we are really being ruled by the worst of the worst- Leftists who desire power for its own sake, because they love to tell others what to do. Marxists who want control, while hiding under a fake shield of “equity”. Equality of outcome, which really means the State (them) controls everything! And once they control everything- forget rights of any kind! Look at communist China- that is what they want- total control! And then: No “fashionable” rights at all. Once they have ultimate control, it is all naked power. You won’t even have illusions anymore, no more BLM, no “rainbow nation”, no Antifa, no free streets at all:Just total martial law, from sea to shining sea! No gangbangers- they will be locked up and executed- no gay rights- reeducation! No freedom of speech: total lockdown. Religion? NO! None at all, only worship of the STATE!This is what we are looking at. Without free and western civilization, the future world will be an awful, restrictive place, where individuals have no rights, none at all, and those left-wingers who see themselves as ‘free and independent’ will be squashed by the same militia of correctness that they saw as their champions! The ‘Fashionable’ elite…My message in all of this? Get out of the cities, the big, blue, Democrat controlled corrupt cities- get out! Ironically, all of you who desire safety, non- discrimination, and a life free of crime and oppression?RURAL, MAGA COUNTRY RED STATES ARE THE ONLY PLACE YOU WILL FIND IT! This is not even debatable. Small town America is the last bastion of freedom and safety. Oppression is a Blue, Democrat, Big City, Oppressive State
