What's up Theology Nerds! Today I'm thrilled to share my conversation with the brilliant Philip Clayton on his new book Science and the Sacred: Beyond the Gods in Our Own Image. This isn't your typical science vs. religion debate - it's something way more interesting! Philip co-authored this book with Claudia Pierce, an atheist religion journalist, creating a beautiful dialogue between theistic and non-theistic perspectives that finds surprising common ground. We explore how their five-year collaboration revealed shared values even as they maintained different views on God. Phil walks us through how modern scientific understanding can coexist with spiritual meaning, challenging both religious fundamentalism and reductive scientism. We dive into questions from both conservative Christians and skeptical atheists who read the book in advance, creating a lively three-way conversation about doubt, faith, and what it means to approach mystery with openness rather than certainty. If you're tired of culture war takes on science and religion and hungry for nuanced dialogue across differences, this episode is your jam! And guess what? Phil's coming to Theology Beer Camp this year, so grab your tickets before May 15th when prices go up! You can WATCH the conversation on YouTube As a scholar, Philip Clayton (Ingraham Professor, Claremont School of Theology) works at the intersection of science, philosophy, and theology. As an activist (president of EcoCiv.org, President of IPDC), he works to convene, facilitate, and catalyze multi-sectoral initiatives toward ecological civilization. As a disciple of Jesus, he finds himself energized by the Spirit in the Quaker community. I am thrilled about this episode in the ongoing Process This series on Artificial Intelligence. In this episode, my series co-host and author of God-Like: A 500-Year History of Artificial Intelligence in Myths, Machines, Monsters, Kester Brewin, is joined by philosopher John Caputo. The conversation occurred at the intersection of artificial intelligence, technology, and theology. They explore the mystical and philosophical implications of AI, reflecting on humanity's relationship with technology and the future of AI in reshaping our understanding of existence. They also touch on key figures such as Heidegger and Derrida, addressing both the potential and peril of technological advancements. Whether you're a theology nerd or a curious mind, this interdisciplinary dialogue promises an enlightening exploration into AI and the human future. John David Caputo (born October 26, 1940) is an American philosopher who is the Thomas J. Watson Professor of Religion Emeritus at Syracuse University and the David R. Cook Professor of Philosophy Emeritus at Villanova University. Caputo is a major figure associated with postmodern Christianity and continental philosophy of religion, as well as the founder of the theological movement known as weak theology. Much of Caputo's work focuses on hermeneutics, phenomenology, deconstruction and theology. Watch the conversation on YouTube here. Previous Episodes with Jack What to Believe? Philip Clayton was my PhD advisor and remains a mentor and friend. We scheduled a live stream session where we planned to explore contemporary options for the doctrine of God by developing a typology of live options, but when we learned of Moltmann's passing, it seemed fitting to pivot our plan and reflect on the life, thought, and impact of Moltmann for Christian Theology You can hear Jurgen Moltmann's visit to the podcast here. John Caputo is back on the podcast! If you are new to Homebrewed Christianity, you may not be familiar with Jack. Still, he is a longtime friend of the pod, a top-tier postmodern philosopher who radically returned to his theological roots. In his new book What to Believe? , he gives a beautiful introduction to his articulation of radical theology inspired by a Tillichian departure. If you no longer “believe in God,” the Supreme Being of classical theology, or you never did in the first place, is there anything you still ought to believe, anything you should cherish unconditionally, no matter what? In this lively and accessible book, addressed to believers, “recovering” believers, disbelievers, nonbelievers, and “nones” alike―to anyone in search of what they really do believe―the acclaimed philosopher and theologian John D. Caputo seeks out what there is to believe, with or without religion. John David Caputo (born October 26, 1940) is an American philosopher who is the Thomas J. Bill Mallonee has been lauded as one of the 100 greatest living songwriters by Paste Magazine and honored by Rolling Stone, The New York Times, Billboard, and more. Before “Americana” was even known as a musical genre, his Athens GA band Vigilantes of Love was helping to define it. Later, with albums produced by Peter Buck of R.E.M., Mark Heard, Jim Scott, and Buddy Miller, it seemed all but inevitable that Bill and his band of outlaws would break through to the big time (whatever that means.) Instead, over thirty years into his career, Mallonee is duking it out, still taking things into his own hands – keeping it all painfully and beautifully real. On this episode of the True Tunes Podcast, we are joined by one of the true “lifers” of the modern roots music scene. With over 70 albums under his belt – and no indication that he intends to slow down any time soon, Mallonee has become a sort of digital troubadour: an online busker. In this expansive conversation, we learn about his musical roots, his circuitous path through the music industry, and his lingering belief in the power of authentic songs. The Vigilantes of Love really started to "click" with the release of their 1994 Capricorn Records album "Welcome To Struggleville." In anticipation of a forthcoming full conversation with that band's founder, Bill Mallonee, we offer this special look at the album that is currently seeking funding via Kickstarter for a special vinyl re-issue. If you're already familiar, then you know exactly how important this album is. If not, take ten minutes to hear from an artist Paste Magazine ranked as one of the 100 greatest living songwriters as he reflects on an album that should have been his band's breakthrough. Bill Mallonee is an Americana Rock music legend. As a founding member of the Vigilantes of Love in the early 90s, and a solo artist since the end of that great band, Bill has written songs that are earthy, beautiful and evocative. As a gifted storyteller and troubadour, Bill remains vital to the patchwork or writers who remind us that there is joy in the winding journey, both nationally and personally. With well over 80 albums to his credit, Bill has had a a great deal of lived experience, much of which is shared in our conversation. Five days after resigning as lead pastor of Mars Hill Church, Mark Driscoll was once again in front of a crowd—this time, a packed conference of pastors who offered him a standing ovation in support. It only took 474 days for him to announce he was planting a new church in Scottsdale, Arizona. But while Driscoll wielded his own force of personality to get as much distance from Mars Hill as possible, life in Seattle was a different story. A confused and hurting church was displaced, hundreds of people were out of their jobs, and the fiercest critics of the church practically threw a party. In our series finale, we follow a few of those threads, which led some people to new ministries, others to new careers, and still others out of the church altogether. We'll revisit the legacy of Driscoll's teaching on gender, and we'll ask whether or not he really preached good news and freedom. We'll also look for the presence of Christ, working in surprising and unseen ways to bring beauty out of the ashes of what was once Mars Hill Church. As we end 2021, we'd love to invite you to join us as we continue to try to tell stories like this. Patrick Ferguson is one of the most highly-praised drummers in the Athens, GA area (and quite possibly the southeastern United States) playing with the likes of Five Eight, R.E.M.'s Mike Mills, The Psychedelic Furs, Bill Mallonee of Vigilantes of Love, Vic Chesnutt and at least 100 bands more. Beyond music, he's created a community out of his musician-friendly podcast with a strong emphasis on mental health known as Crash & Ride. I won the Self-Made Indie Podcaster Award for Best Female Host and Best Music Podcast! Thank you so much!!! I was super busy this week what with applying to grad school and learning how to be a social animal again! This week has some awesome music, so let’s get into it! Album of the Week: Semler -- Preacher’s Kid I don’t have Grace Baldridge’s experience of growing up queer and Evangelical, but you don’t need to be Christian to have shame around being queer. Before I get into the album, I do want to point out that Baldridge pulled a Lil Nas X and listed this album under Christian music -- after all, it is about their experience with the religion. And it’s music. And it has since shot up to #1 of the Apple Music Christian charts. Maybe it’s Baldridge’s gravelly voice; maybe it’s the way they expertly intertwine their experiences of pain, humor, awkwardness, and empowerment. Whatever your background, this is an album that gently reminds you of the queer shame you felt going up, that maybe you still haven’t abandoned, and celebrates with righteous joy that we made it through. Vivian Leva & Riley Calcagno -- “Biding All My Time” (Vivian Leva & Riley Calcagno) Ontarians -- “No Regrets” (The Greatest Short Story Never Told) Rosie Cima & What She Dreamed -- “Stuck” (Realm of the Warring Gods) Dirty Bird -- “Thunder Don’t Run” (For the Time Being) Mac Leaphart -- “That Train” (Music City Joke) Semler -- “Jesus From Texas” (Preacher’s Kid) The Octobers -- “Rip Van Winkle” (Single) Fee Doyle -- “My Previous Life” (Trail Markers) Lainey Wilson -- “Neon Diamonds” (Sayin’ What I’m Thinkin’) Oh Susannah -- “Pretty Blue Eyes” (Soon the Birds) Bill Mallonee -- “Everybody Does (A Clamoring of Ghosts) Adeem the Artist -- “I Never Came Out” (Cast Iron Pansexual) Clark Naito -- “Pen Ken Pan” (Single) Podcast intro by Alma Contra, music from Two Cow Garage’s “Stars & Gutters” Send me music via SubmitHub! Better late than never!!! Hey! Vote for me in the Self Made Indie Podcast Awards for Best Music Podcast, Best Female Host, and Best Patreon here! Voting ends on 2/28! Album of the Week: Ben Trickey -- We Are Not Lucky We Are Blessed Ben Trickey’s newest album, We Are Not Lucky We Are Blessed, is his finest effort to date. It’s making me do things I haven’t for a long time: feel things, for example. But, most importantly, it made me feel sad when it ended because I wanted more. Trickey sings and writes with a prophetic voice reminiscent of Bill Mallonee of the Vigilantes of Love. While I feature some of the quieter songs on the podcast, Trickey can fill a stadium with his artful soundscapes, the soundtrack to despair, dread, and, in spite of it all, hope. Bill Mallonee is an extraordinarily gifted singer/songwriter, originally from Athens, now living outside Taos, New Mexico. Bill and I have known each other for almost 30 years and have collaborated a few times, shared many stages, and gone through many of life's tribulations as friends and comrades. I've always admired Bill's extraordinary talent and his commitment to being a man of faith, even while most of us in his circle of friends were staunchly agnostic. Bill's lyrics are fantastic, his commitment to telling the human story unwavering, and his work ethic is legendary. Check out his Bandcamp page. What is that, eighty albums? Astonishing. Instead of doing a mixed Spotify playlist of songs by different artists, this week is going to be a list of Bandcamp tracks that he selected from his own discography. Keep an eye out for that! Here's Bill's Bandcamp page: https://billmalloneemusic.bandcamp.com/

Bill Mallonee talks about three decades of singing/sonwriting, the music business, Neil Young's "More Barn" mixing, living in the Rockies and how his faith has influenced his life and work. I have known Bill longer than any of my other guest to date, and can say he is one of the most under-appreciated artists of his time, and more talented than he knows. And his heart is as big as the New Mexico sky that fills the nights over his house.

Please join John with his very special guest, Bill Mallonee. Paste Music Magazine, in a poll conducted by both writers and artists, listed Bill Mallonee as 65 in their "100 Greatest Living Songwriters Poll." "At the end of the day, it's about the story living under your own skin. In my work, I've just tried to chase that story down and put something of a frame around it for a spell." Mallonee, (pronounced MAL-O-KNEE) the lyrical and musical source behind the late Vigilantes of Love, started playing music in Athens in the late 80's. Mallonee learned guitar quickly and the post-punk-pop of the La's, XTC, Joy Division, the Clash and Echo and the Bunnymen. Great college scene bands that passed through Athens, Georgia during that time were Athen's own R.E.M., the dbs (with the great Chris Stamey and Peter Hosapple), Mitch Easter's 'Let's Active. These were also big influences. Each of those bands proudly wove indebtedness to the first "British Invasion" into their musical flags. www.billmallonee.net

Here's a little Easter egg for all the Homebrewed Christianity Deacons to pop open! It's a little 3-d experience...a bootlegged version of the Homebrewed Christianity 3-D event at Soularize. Since we couldn't get access to the sound board we couldn't get a better recording but thanks be to Bo who has edited the event down an hour and EQ-ed the speakers so you can make out what they are saying. If you want more 3-D excitement just get ready for Jack Caputo's 'what is radical theology?' 3-D experience & Philip Clayton's 'Predicament of Belief' show. Both of those WE ran the sound system and they sound like gold! This podcast begins with Jack Caputo & Philip Clayton wrestling with religion and Christainity. Then Peter Rollins starts to insurrect things and Jay Bakker helps us get our preaching legs underneath us. The podcast ends with the music we used to begin the live event...Jesus and my favorite song writer....BILL MALLONEE.
