Football v Homophobia
Rainbow Laces 'real talk' in women's football, with Caz Simone and Valentine Pursey

Football v Homophobia

It's a huge weekend in the Women's Super League and Championship, with bumper crowds expected on a round of fixtures all being played at the clubs' main stadiums - from Goodison Park to the Amex, from St James' Park to The Valley, a lot of eyes will be on women's football. And they'll be seeing a lot of rainbows, as it's a Rainbow Laces activation too. So how important is the LGBTQ+ inclusion in sports campaign in the women's game? Joining us to explore this is Billericay Town forward Valentine Pursey, who recently went public about a report she made regarding homophobic abuse on the pitch; and Huddersfield Town midfielder and TikToker Caz Simone, who won the LGBTQ Award at the Football Black List earlier this year. They chat with host Jon Holmes of FvH and Sports Media LGBT+ about their experiences within football and on social media; what it's like to be a player with short hair, which is somewhat rare in the women's game and also the subject of an awareness campaign created by an Under-12 girls team; and what they believe the underlying message should be for Rainbow Laces 2024. It's the end of the season for many but for our first guest it's just the beginning. Not with us, we've followed his journey for years, A new project begins this week as Gary McCann takes on the role of manager of Billericay Town. Calm and collected as ever, the excitement though is clear as he opens up about the challenge ahead. For our next guest, this weekend is the end of a very successful season whatever the result. We spoke with him earlier this season on an historic FA Cup run and now they are one win away from promotion to Step 4 and the first time back into the Northern Premier League since the 1960s. In the much talked about inter league Step 4 / Step 5 play offs they have possibly the longest journey, but that distance on the road is nothing compared to the journey the club has been on. Ashington Chairman Brian Shotton is keen that that journey has many more legs to come.  Rounding up the week's news promotions and relations it's Jon Couch of the Non League Paper who thinks this is his favourite time of year.

In today's show, we welcome John Peel (Director at Lewes FC) and Nick Hutt (co-owner of Billericay Town) to talk about gambling in football. We were keen to draw upon John and Nick's experiences in non-league football and how the betting industry impacts clubs - directly and indirectly - lower down the pyramid. We hope that this discussion can play a small part in football reverting to type and being as beautiful as it once was, free of betting logos emblazoned on everything. First guest of the evening is Salford City boss Graham Alexander making his debut on the show and highlighting why the owners of the club thought he was the right man to guide them into their next chapter and explaining why that might not immediately be outside the non league world. A little over two months ago Jimmy Ginnelly had a nice safe, successful job as manager at Barwell FC then he joined the new look Nuneaton Borough to take charge of on the field activities. With the departure of the short-lived Chairman Nick Hawkins this week he now finds himself as Manager, Acting Chairman and the man charged with raising the finance to save the troubled club, but he's still positive it can be done. Hayes & Yeading United remain the only club in the top 8 tiers of English football - Premier League to Step 4 of the non league pyramid - to retain their 100% winning league record. They are also top scorers across the same 18 divisions with 98 goals in 25 league games. Manager Paul Hughes returns to the show to discuss what the magic formula has been this season and why on Valentine's evening he is sat late in a radio studio, having already taking his side for training. Editor at The Non League Paper, Alex Narey is back to discuss the big talking points of the week including the FA Trophy replay results and Solihull Moors going top of the National League. Plus the vagaries of football management with Lee Sinnott sacked at Gainsborough Trinity despite his side being 6th in the Northern Premier and Dean Brennan quickly back involved after leaving Billericay Town, with a new role in charge at Kingstonian.

Tim Fuell delves into the FA Trophy First Round Proper as the competition reaches the last 64. First up owner of Southport FC, Phil Hodgkinson ahead of his side's massive cup week. Hosting fellow FA Cup replay remainers Solihill Moors in this weekend's FA Trophy the club face a tough challenge, but perhaps not as tough as Monday's home FA Cup replay against Tranmere Rovers. With the prize of a televised FA Cup Third Round tie against Tottenham Hotspur awaiting the winners, it's interesting times for the Sandgrounders. Made more interesting because their FA Trophy rivals Solihull Moors have their own FA Cup replay on Tuesday at Blackpool with another TV screened FA Cup Third Round tie, this time at home to Arsenal, the carrot awaiting. Hartlepool United are new to the FA Trophy but new manager Richard Money believes it is the sort of competition they should be looking to do well in. He admits their trip to Leamington on Saturday is a tough one but he knows the rewards success in the competition can bring having won with Cambridge United. Paul Hughes is manager at Hayes & Yeading United of the Isthmian South Central Division in Step 4. Having knocked three step 3 sides already out of this season's FA Trophy, his side face a very tough trip to current holders Brackley Town. The odds might be against them but the West London side are in form, in goals and in the mood to take cup scalps. Rounding it all off Matt Badcock returns with the Non League Paper round up including Billericay Town, managers looking to get back into a hotseat and the cup competitions ahead.

There's Cup fever in the air as Dave Anderson and Caroline Barker join Tim Fuell for this week's non league bonanza. First up Lymington Town boss John Pyatt on FA Cup history that will see them face Torquay United in the next round on a pitch they share with the local cricket club, but first they need to prepare for an FA Vase trip to Eversley and California. Fergus Moore knows a thing or too about non league football with over 1200 games as a player for over 20 clubs and now still enjoying the game as player manager at Edgware Town. Tim Fuell, Dave Anderson and Swampy take a look at the biggest stories at grassroots as the season draws to a close. Perhaps the biggest subject in non league this season has been Billericay Town. With owner Glenn Tamplin having stepped aside from team involvement, Harry Wheeler has driven the Essex side to the title in the Isthmian Premier and promotion much spoken about but still needed to be achieved. Harry talks to the team about the difficulties over the past season, and why he is proud of his players and where he thinks the club is heading under his managerial guidance. The season may be ending for many this weekend, but there are still many permutations for promotion, relegation and play-offs. Yet, even the rules and their application aren't completely clear as the team discuss. The other most talked about non league side this season has probably been Salford City. Having secured their own title, Anthony 'Jonno' Johnson returns to the show to explain what it all means and what he thinks it will take to move on with the team again next term.
