pWotD Episode 2937: Crystal Palace F.C. Welcome to Popular Wiki of the Day, spotlighting Wikipedia's most visited pages, giving you a peek into what the world is curious about today. With 232,959 views on Saturday, 17 May 2025 our article of the day is Crystal Palace F.C..Crystal Palace Football Club, commonly referred to as Crystal Palace or simply Palace, is a professional football club based in Selhurst, South London, England, which competes in the Premier League, the top-tier of English football. The club was formally created as a professional outfit in 1905 at the Crystal Palace exhibition building, but its origins can be traced back to 1861. The club used the FA Cup final stadium inside the exhibition grounds for their home games between 1905 and 1915, when they were forced to leave due to the outbreak of the First World War. In 1924, they moved to their current home at Selhurst Park.Crystal Palace spent their early years as a professional club playing in the Southern League. They were elected to the Football League in 1920, and have mainly competed in the top two tiers of English football during their league history. Since 1964, Palace have only dropped below the second tier once, for three seasons between 1974 and 1977. They reached the 1990 FA Cup final and challenged Arsenal and Liverpool for the English league title in 1990–91, finishing in third place, the club's highest league finish to date, and only missed out on UEFA Cup qualification due to a ban on English clubs. The club were founder members of the inaugural Premier League in 1992–93, though they were relegated that season, as well as facing immediate relegations in 1994–95, 1997–98, and 2004–05. They were promoted to the Premier League once again in 2013 and have remained there ever since, achieving a record-extending thirteenth consecutive top-flight season as of 2025–26, as well as reaching two more FA Cup finals in 2016 and 2025, with victory in the latter final resulting in the club's first major trophy in its history. The club's kit colours were claret and blue until 1973, when they changed to the red and blue vertical stripes worn today. Palace have a long-standing and fierce rivalry with Brighton & Hove Albion that emerged in the 1970s, as well as sharing strong rivalries with local clubs Millwall and Charlton Athletic. This recording reflects the Wikipedia text as of 03:25 UTC on Sunday, 18 May 2025.For the full current version of the article, see Crystal Palace F.C. on Wikipedia. This podcast uses content from Wikipedia under the Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike License.Visit our archives at wikioftheday.com and subscribe to stay updated on new episodes.Follow us on Mastodon at @wikioftheday@masto.ai.Also check out Curmudgeon's Corner, a current events podcast.Until next time, I'm neural Niamh.

fWotD Episode 2694: 1894–95 New Brompton F.C. season Welcome to Featured Wiki of the Day, your daily dose of knowledge from Wikipedia’s finest articles. The featured article for Thursday, 19 September 2024 is 1894–95 New Brompton F.C. season.During the 1894–95 English football season, New Brompton F. C. (since 1912 called Gillingham F. C.) competed in the Southern Football League Division Two. It was the first season in which the team took part in a league competition. The club had been formed a year earlier but in its inaugural season played only friendly matches and games in the qualifying rounds of the FA Cup and FA Amateur Cup. In 1894, New Brompton turned professional and joined the newly-formed Southern League. The team dominated Division Two of the new league, winning all but one of their matches, and gained promotion to Division One by winning an end-of-season "test match" against Swindon Town, who had finished bottom of the higher division. New Brompton also entered the FA Cup, reaching the third qualifying round. The team played 15 competitive matches, winning 13, drawing none, and losing two. Arthur Rule was the team's top goalscorer; he scored 18 goals in the regular league season and 4 in the test match. Harry Buckland and Alf Meager made the most appearances, playing in every match. The highest attendance recorded at the club's home, the Athletic Ground, was approximately 8,000 for the visit of near-neighbours Chatham in the FA Cup.This recording reflects the Wikipedia text as of 00:34 UTC on Thursday, 19 September 2024.For the full current version of the article, see 1894–95 New Brompton F.C. season on Wikipedia. This podcast uses content from Wikipedia under the Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike License.Visit our archives at wikioftheday.com and subscribe to stay updated on new episodes.Follow us on Mastodon at @wikioftheday@masto.ai.Also check out Curmudgeon's Corner, a current events podcast.Until next time, I'm neural Aria.

Once more it's Brett Ballantini's favorite week of the month, when he gets to again call on president and GM of the first-place Birmingham Barons, Jonathan Nelson. Somehow again talking during a tough series pitting the two best teams in the Southern League against one another (Birmingham and Pensacola), the two catch up on all the good coming out of Double-A: Stats review: Just how dominant have the Barons been? As of June 1, Domingo Robles leads the Southern League with a 2.32 ERA. The Dominican Republic native is in his first season with the Atlanta Braves organization, and the 24-year-old talks to Chris Harris about the addition of a new pitch, and why he's finding success this season.
The Los Angeles Angels can't seem to get out of their own way once again, as they drop game 3 to the Orioles, 3-1. Griffin Canning had a decent start on the mound, although errors and issues behind him caused Canning to have to throw more pitches than necessary, leading to the O's taking a 3-1 lead. That was all it took with Baltimore's lockdown bullpen, and despite a Mike Trout home run, the Angels couldn't muster enough offense to climb back in it. Speaking of Trout's home run, it was good to see him make the adjustment as we spoke about yesterday. We'll give you all the details in segment 1.Then, Phil Nevin and the Angels' front office are NOT happy about the new baseballs being used in the Southern League, particularly because that's where the Halos' AA affiliate, the Rocket City Trash Pandas, play baseball. The new ball that MLB is trying out is affecting players both on the mound and at the plate, and it makes it difficult for the Angels to get a good read on their best prospects in AA. Why is MLB doing this, and will it last? We'll talk about it in segment 2!Plus, we owe Matt Thaiss an apology. The Angels' catcher has had quite a turnaround since the beginning of the season, hitting well and playing a much better catcher than the first few weeks. What changed? We'll dive into what has caused this turnaround for Thaiss in segment 3!GET IN OUR VOICEMAIL! It's a reassignment back to the minors again this week, as baseball writer Dale Tafoya ("One Season in Rocket City") joins the 'cast for a look back at the unforgettable inaugural 1985 season of the Southern League's Huntsville Stars - the Oakland As' talent-laden, then-Double-A affiliate that took both the city and the sport by storm. Named after Huntsville's celebrated space industry, the Stars became one of the biggest attractions in all of Minor League Baseball that season - boasting a dugout full of top Oakland prospects who would ultimately fuel the Athletics' big-league success later in the decade, including a 1989 World Series title sweep of the San Francisco Giants. Led by hot prospects/future MLB notables like Tim Belcher, Stan Javier, Luis Polonia, Terry Steinbach, and José Canseco, the Stars also featured a solid cast of gutsy minor-league role players who, despite never getting called up to "The Show," proved crucial to the team's championship that magical first season. Though merely an opening chapter in Huntsville's baseball history now (the Stars moved to Biloxi, MS in 2015 to become the Shuckers; the Southern League's Rocket City Trash Pandas brought minor league ball back to the nearby suburb of Madison in 2020), the team and their story is one worth remembering.
